My kids reminded me that when they were young, I’d walk them to the bus stop and wave, not saying goodbye. Instead, I’d say, “Go do something nice for someone today!” It’s been a mantra of sorts, and I hope the message haunts them as they navigate the workplace, relationships and community. It’s not that hard to be nice, so don’t let your default be negative and critical. Cynicism is not sexy, sarcasm is not sophisticated. Especially when there’s a human on the receiving end. Ok, that’s my lecture for the month. Now, go do something nice for someone today! And, enjoy this issue full of stories of generosity, good manners and thoughtfulness. “Alpharetta is such a beautiful city with continued growth. We are constantly looking for ways to become more involved in the community.” Small business owner Andrea Zare is committed to Alpharetta and she and her partner (in business and life) Sean decided to continue to invest by renovating their showroom at Classic Blinds & Shutters Design Center. They have been in their location on Main Street for ten years and are excited about the new renovation, which gives them an opportunity to bring new trends and industry updates to their business, with a beautiful and inviting new space. Andrea and Sean founded the company 27 years ago. Their son Zackary Zare has been learning the business for the last five years. He will soon graduate from the University of Alabama’s Business School and join his parents in growing the business. We sat down with A ndrea to ask about the company’s growth.

CONGRATULATIONS ON THE RENOVATION. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE NEW DISPLAY? It is so hard to pick just one favorite because they are all new. We just had the new Hunter Douglas Gallery installed, featuring new and innovative automated products. We also have new Graber and drapery displays to showcase.

AND, FOR THE WINTER MONTHS, WHAT PRODUCTS ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT? We are very excited about all of the new products, especially the new automated innovations and the duolite shades which offer you two shades on one headrail. This allows you to have the shades completely up and out of the way or have a sheer shade down that offers light filtering or you can drop the back shade to give you room-darkening features. This is a product that you have to see in person. We would love for you to stop by the showroom so that we can demonstrate it in person.

No other comic is more identifiable with Atlanta than Jeff Foxworthy. A respected mainstay in the comedy world, Jeff launched his career by winning the Great Southeastern Laugh-off at Atlanta’s Punchline Comedy Club in 1984. Since then, he has authored more than 26 books, hosted several successful game shows, and led the hugely successful Blue Collar Comedy Tour. Jeff’s brand of humor has made our lives brighter, and while he’s recognized across the country for his laughs, fewer people may realize that he also has a big heart for service. This month, Jeff will serve as emcee for the CURE Childhood Cancer 10th annual Believe Ball. Jeff and his wife Gregg are longtime supporters of CURE. “We have been blessed in our life, not only financially, but blessed with our children’s and grandchildren’s health,” says Jeff. “We are called to love our neighbor, and Gregg and I take that seriously.” Beyond CURE, Jeff and his wife support the Atlanta Mission, Plywood People, No Longer Bound, Hope Heals and the Westside rebuilding efforts. “Supporting CURE -- their amazing contribution to research, and the care for the families during their cancer journey -- makes a difference. Most people don’t realize how little funding childhood cancer research receives. Gregg and I have been supporters and advocates since the early ‘90s when we worked with Duke Children’s Hospital and Camp Sunshine. We have met some great people along the way who are having an impact and making a difference.”

BELIEVE BALL MARKS 10 YEARS OF GIVING ON NOVEMBER 11 The brainchild of longtime CURE supporters Sylvia and Pat Tylka, the black-tie Believe Ball began in 2014. The 2023 event marks a decade of generosity and will exceed the incredible milestone of raising more than $10 million since its inception. A highlight of the Believe Ball will be CURE’s presentation of the Ragab Spirit of Hope Award to Lendmark Financial Services and its CEO Bobby Aiken. Named for Dr. Abdel Ragab - Emory University’s first pediatric

oncologist and CURE’s founder – the award is presented to individuals who exemplify the dedication, compassion and commitment to children with cancer that Dr. Ragab embodied. “Bobby Aiken is the epitome of a servant leader,” says Kristin Connor, CEO of CURE. “He is so inspiring that the entire company has embraced his vision and made it their own.” The Lendmark annual Climb to CURE campaign has grown from a one-day event to the company’s cornerstone philanthropic initiative. Through the Climb to CURE, Bobby and the Lendmark associates have raised more than $6.73 million through employee, partner and community fundraising efforts – including a $2 million donation raised in 2023 alone.

CURE SUPPORTS ROSWELL FAMILY Roswell’s Matt and Kelly Gilley experienced the childhood cancer journey with their son Jason, a college athlete, who was diagnosed with stage 3 testicular cancer at age 19. After his orchiectomy, he started chemo. While the treatments were tough on Jason physically and mentally, the family commends the incredible care team at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and CURE. “CURE met us within the first hour of our first day and gave us thorough packets of information and boxed lunches,” said Matt Gilley. “We saw throughout Jason’s nine weeks of chemo how amazing CURE was, especially for families from out of town and others that needed resources.” The Gilleys vowed to give back and get involved with CURE when Jason finished treatment. The family, including siblings Tyler and Anna and his dog Beignet, are all thrilled that Jason is in remission and back at school playing ball again.

A SIMPLER LIFE – FOXWORTHY ON THE FARM Today Jeff and his wife Gregg have moved to a farm in Georgia to create more memories for their family. “The farm is beautiful. It’s my place to unplug from the world. The only thing that makes me happier than sitting on a tractor is doing so with my grandson in my lap. Being on the farm has taught me a lot about being still.” CONTINUED >

Jeff attributes his ability to balance his successful career to staying grounded in God, his family, and his long-time friends. “I was a little boy from Hapeville who got very lucky.” “Not only is Jeff a comedy genius and a constant advocate for children with cancer, but most people don’t know how much Jeff does for the community,” says Connor. “He gives of himself without fanfare. So while we love his comedy, we also love his character." New Prospect Elementary School got the thrill of a lifetime with a visit from Broadway singer and author Idina Menzel and her sister, co-author and writer, Cara Mentzel. They stopped by the school to do a live read of their new children's book Proud Mouse. Students sang their school song for the sisters and got to ask questions and dialogue with the authors. Each student received a copy of the book signed by both sisters. "The word that comes to mind when describing this experience is 'perfect,'" says New Prospect Elementary School

“We don’t realize how blessed we are until we fully begin to look outside ourselves,” words from Alpharetta Housewives’ founder Branda Peterson. Branda has been a magnet to community outreach and has made it a priority to work with and curate teams to create impactful, powerful, and influential events. This fall, Branda joined forces with the EV Hotel Give Back Foundation and EV Hotels chairman and founder Ken Patel to present Alpharetta’s 2023 Gatsby Gala event. Fascinators, sequins, bow-ties, fedoras, and feathers dazzled the ballroom at Hotel Avalon where attendees stepped into a space that catapulted them back to the 1920s. Performances were provided by Angel the Star and Gabe Lustman, with special guest appearances by Bella Blaq and music, TV, and entertainment producer Ian Burke. An added touch of elegance was on display as the crowd witnessed a live painting demonstration by contemporary artist Armando Chacon.

Guests donated, danced, and listened to an open dialogue about sex trafficking and how we, as a community, can make a difference. The conversation was led by Amelia Quinn, founder of BeLoved Atlanta, and executive development director Chesin Kuriakose. Amelia and Chesin delivered an informative presentation that outlined the importance of their cause, BeLoved Atlanta, a nonprofit addressing the problem of sex trafficking in Atlanta by offering support and providing safe homes. Award-winning sex trafficking survivor Dr. Nissi Hamilton brought the event to a close as the keynote speaker. Dr. Hamilton is the recipient of the Foundation of Improvement in Justice award. Cooking a Thanksgiving feast in a vacation rental kitchen might make your skin crawl, but with a bit of planning and the help of a property management booking company like Vacasa, your destination holiday meal can be perfectly delicious and the spark for a new family tradition. Before booking, read the fine print about the kitchen. Comb through reviews for mention of sharp knives, plentiful Calphalon, or an impressive pantry. The property we found in Seattle had a small but mighty restaurant-quality kitchen with moody views of Lake Washington and Mt. Rainer from the wrap-around deck and plentiful windows. The open floor plan was conducive to conversations while cooking and recruiting sous chefs from the living room where a full-on Lord of The

Rings marathon was underway on the big screen TV. Keeping the troops happy was easy with day trips into the city (a 15-minute drive) to shop, hit museums, poke around Pike Place Market where we could shop for fresh vegetables for Thanksgiving sides. Seattle lies on a narrow strip of land between the salt waters of Puget Sound and the fresh waters of Lake Washington. It is a city built on hills and around water, in a mild marine climate that encourages prolific vegetation and abundant natural resources. The city is built on Indigenous land, the traditional territory of Coast Salish peoples, specifically the Suquamish and Duwamish Tribes. They lived in the region for thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans or white settlers and developed extensive trade and social networks, along with a deep knowledge of the land and sea, and continue to live there today. We felt their presence as we hiked Seward Park, 300 acres of beautiful forest land, home to eagles’ nests, a 2.4 mile bike and walking path, an amphitheater, a native plant garden, an art studio, miles of hiking trails, shoreline and beaches. We were humbled by the density and grandeur of the old-growth forest, ancient hardwoods dwarfing us as we passed through. Shop Pike/Pine Streets corridor, starting at around 7th Ave, working your way down to the waterfront to Pike Place Market, Seattle Aquarium, Pier 57 and the Seattle Great Wheel, a giant Ferris wheel, and seafood joints. Shop Uniqlo, KÜHL, Arc’teryx and all your favorite athleisure brands. A Thanksgiving in a new place can provide a different lens through which to view ourselves and our family. You’ll find yourself thankful for space and room to breathe. And, for excellent knives, a garlic press and a legit hand mixer for the smoothest mashed potatoes ever. Pet Business ALPHARETTA WELCOMES ANIMAL ADVOCATES For the past 24 years, the Animal Protection And Wellness (APAW) Expo has successfully united a cross-section of animal law professionals and animal welfare advocates to teach the importance of their roles in protecting animals as well as humans. Last month, APAW partnered with Georgia Veterinarian Medical Association’s (G.V.M.A.) VetSouth and the Georgia Animal Control Association (G.A.C.A.) and met at The Hotel at Avalon. There was a host of amazing speakers and courses including Lt. Governor Burt Jones, Senator Kay Kirkpatrick and Tyler Harper at a round table on companion animals and Victoria Stilwell’s expert advice on “The Overwhelmed Dog - Helping Dogs Cope with a Confusing World.” Alpharetta played host for networking with lawmakers, prosecutors, judges, lawyers, animal welfare organizations, veterinarians, and vet techs. Animal shelter and rescue/foster professionals, violence interceptors, domestic

violence, and child advocates met during the conference at Avalon. Dialogue among dog trainers, animal behaviorists, emergency management and regulatory agency inspectors was highlighted. Also, in September, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners unanimously passed an animal ordinance that prohibits the sale of dogs, cats, and domestic rabbits in transient, outdoor locations (such as parking lots and roadsides) in unincorporated Fulton and encouraged municipalities within the county to pass the same ordinance. This is a step in the right direction for all our four-legged friends. Alpharetta area shelters are all full to the brim. The summer after my freshman year of college, my new bestie and I found waitress jobs at a fancy old-school restaurant in a summer community on Lake Michigan where we could sail, tan, and be teens when we weren’t waiting tables. (I use that term loosely.) What we knew about being a good waitress could fit on one sheet of the tiny notepads the owner handed us before the dining room opened on day one. We were to take drink orders (again, I didn’t know a martini from a Manhattan), neatly write down the food order, drop the slip in the kitchen and get the diners another round of drinks. The minimum wage was $3.10 an hour and we pooled the tips at the end of the night. The dining room manager (the owner’s son, a whiney former frat boy) would put all the cash in a coffee can, tuck it under his blue blazer, and disappear upstairs to the office. We really had no idea what was going on, but were glad to have a fistful of cash at the end of the night for last call at Bar Harbor. Tipping has evolved, and as someone who eats out often, I tend to tip liberally. My kids who have worked in the food service industry claim this is not the norm. Are people really still tipping 15 percent? I decided to dig around. According to a report on Grub Street -- New York Magazine’s food and restaurant blog -- at restaurants, the previous range of socially acceptable and ethically expected tips was 15 to 20 percent. Now, it’s 20 to 25. Tips are often pooled, so don’t punish the entire staff because your fish didn’t come out in a timely fashion. The higher your disposable income, the more you should tip, but anything under 20 percent is rude.

At coffee shops - at least 20 percent. If your order is only coffee, you may tip $1. For food delivery, tip a minimum of $5 or 20 percent, whichever is greater. In cash, when possible. If you’re ordering takeout, tip at least 10 percent. At the bar, tip $1 for a beer and 20 percent for a cocktail. For your hairstylist, nail tech, or house cleaner, it’s 20% minimum. Experts from Wimberly, Lawson, Steckel, Schneider, & Stine P.C. chimed in at a Georgia Restaurant Association’s webinar earlier this year. They explained that the federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour and the tip credit minimum wage is $2.13 per hour. Tips received must bring employees’ hourly rate to at least $7.25 per hour. If not, employers are required to provide supplemental pay. Tip pools are a popular way to distribute gratuity among staff. A round-up in September’s Forbes Advisor reported most people tip when it’s expected - 95 percent of respondents said they tip at least sometimes, with 76 percent saying they tip always or often. The majority of respondents say they tip an average of 11 percent to 20 percent. Most people tip more when they leave a digital tip. Nearly 65 percent of people tip at least 11 percent more when they tip digitally versus with cash. One in three people feel pressured to tip, while 18 percent feel uncomfortable about tipping. During this season of giving, consider being more than comfortable tipping generously. Show your appreciation with eye contact, a flood of please and thank yous, and yes, a hefty tip.

The bottom line is to remember to respect the waitstaff who serves you meals. Tip at least 20 percent always and for goodness sake, use your manners! “May I please have...” rather than, “Ya, gimme a...”

Shopping for Good ARTICLE BY ALPHARETTA CITY LIFESTYLE STAFF Next up, Halcyon will host its Stuff a Truck toy drive with the Forsyth County Fire Department on December 2 and the Ugly Christmas Sweater Bar Crawl on December 14, benefitting the Place of Forsyth, which assists the people of Forsyth and Dawson County areas with essential needs to be self-sustaining. The Place was founded in 1975 by four Dominican Nuns. The sisters offered assistance with financial needs, clothing, shelter, food, and even tutoring. The Place has been the catalyst for several agencies now serving the community. In 2015, a workforce development initiative was launched to help individuals who are unemployed or under-employed prepare for and secure jobs. In 2021, they merged with Dawson County’s RIC-Rack thrift store and food pantry. Now, programs and services include financial assistance, workforce development and more. Today, The Place serves our communities with emergency financial assistance, clothing, food, educational opportunities, plus numerous support services. Halcyon retailers make giving a priority Halcyon, the Big Creek Greenway-connected mixed-use village in Forsyth County, has put a heavy emphasis on giving back to the community since its opening in 2019. Halcyon hosts hundreds of events per year, with a majority incorporating a charitable component, such as Ladies’ Night Out, Halloween, International Doodle Dog Day and several others.
