Happy Independence Day! The first celebrity I rubbed shoulders with was Barbara Harrison. I was in elementary school. Since then, I’ve had the pleasure of shaking hands with John Travolta, Jane Fonda, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Ray Liotta (RIP, just last month), Tony Shaloub and Brooke Adams, Martha Graham, Ted Turner, Ralph Fiennes (on the Beltline) and a gaggle of celebrity chefs. I once applied for a job as George Peppard’s assistant when I lived in England and received a very nice rejection letter signed by him (or the assistant who beat me out for the job). I’m someone who gets starstruck, so I’m sure I smiled wide with an awkward expression on my face during these encounters. Ms. Harrison was adored by everyone she met, gorgeous with perfect freckles splashed across her aquiline nose. She would strut around in her bikini, fans following her from a disrespectful distance. During most daylight hours, she sat on her throne, behind dark sunglasses, a regal expression on her face while she surveyed her kingdom. She was royalty and I loved her deeply. My summers were filled with celebrities of a different kind. They ruled over the swimming pools of my youth. Barbie Harrison was a lifeguard at our swim club. All summer long, she and the other Hollywood lifeguards at Colony Swim Club would reign supreme, sitting on their stands twirling their whistles while looking down upon the swimmers, chicken fighters and annoyed mothers. They were aristocrats. I don’t know if it was the giddiness of summer vacation, their matching Speedo bathing suits (an occasional bikini), all that flesh and heat or just my youthful midwest naivety, but those lifeguards added glam to my life. This summer, I hope you find your magic and take this issue along with you when you head to the pool or shady perch. Enjoy our feature on beautifully designed kitchens and bathrooms. It’s not everyday that you are tasked with writing about a friend who just happens to be your boss. I have known this man for more than a decade and he still carries an air of mystery and reverence. He wears many hats: business owner, event planner, executive producer, chef, florist, enophile, visual storyteller, and travel and lifestyle journalist for this magazine. Born in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Sean O’Keefe spent his early years fishing, farming, and cooking with his grandfather. These hobbies developed into a business when he moved to Toronto and opened “The House Husband.” His “everyone deserves to be a guest in their own home” attitude is as unstoppable today as it was then. California is really where his current career and life started taking shape and it is where Sean began to find his true calling: helping others. One of his favorite California stories was when, after returning from a culinary trip to Europe, he was tasked with the challenge of recreating Europe’s finest dishes for a very formal affair. After the meal, a guest exclaimed that the shrimp dish had taken him "to the moon" and he had not been there in years. As it turned out, Buzz Aldrin really liked the shrimp! Building on his successful culinary and lifestyle businesses in Toronto, Beverly Hills, and Santa Barbara, Sean decided to move to Atlanta in 2008. Over the last 14 years, Sean has been a regular lifestyle and wellness contributor for NBC, CBS, FOX, and The Weather Channel. It was at NBC’s affiliate in Atlanta, where Sean and I became friends, and I produced multiple lifestyle segments for him as I traveled down my career path in local media.

Sean took his culinary and lifestyle experiences to serve the masses with the creation of Sean O’Keefe Events in Atlanta. What started out as an events-based company, has now become a multimedia event production company that works almost exclusively with nonprofit companies and charities throughout the southeast and across the nation. “Life is very funny,” says Sean. "It is almost accidental that I ended up in this business.” One of the first people Sean met after relocating to Atlanta was the executive director of a non-profit organization who asked if he knew how to throw a party. Needless to say Sean said "yes" and as they say, the rest is his story. When the world shut down in 2020, Sean knew a pivot was needed for fundraising, as live events were put on hold. He and his team of producers, donors and sponsors have been working non-stop for the past three years to raise money and awareness for non-profit organizations with virtual fundraising events and broadcast charity fundraising. “The most challenging thing that I face with any client is how to teach donors the absolute importance of giving. Equally important is teaching the clients how to treat their donors,” says Sean. He is a big fan of asking people what they want and packaging and delivering exactly what his clients request with clear intention and gratitude. Sean says, “While I am uncertain what exactly the future holds for me, I can be quite sure that it will involve making the world a better place and remembering that gratitude is the key to success.” It is very easy to see why we call him “the charity guy."

Sean has continued to mentor me with advice, support, and a friendly ear. He helped me become the best I could be and today I am a happy member of Team Sean O’Keefe. Sean is a contributing associate editor and writer for City Lifestyle Publications and, in his free time, is an avid beekeeper, organic gardener and proud papa of two dachshunds. He lives happily with his partner, Marty, in Mableton, Georgia.

To the Beach!

EMERALD WATERS ON CRYSTAL BEACH

Several times a year, I am lucky enough to be able to take a mother-daughter trip with my young adult daughter. For this getaway, we chose relaxation on the powdery white sand of Crystal Beach in Destin, Florida. Thanks to the efficiency of the experts at Newman-Dailey Resort Properties, we were able to put together a hassle-free long weekend stay that fit our needs. We have found that using a professional management company like Newman-Dailey is a benefit, as the property is kept exceptionally clean and safe. We arrived at the lovely Emerald Dunes Condominium and found our keyless check-in to be quick and easy. The well appointed condo was not a surprise, as we have stayed at other Newman-Dailey properties in the past and are always impressed. The two guest bedrooms and main bedroom were decorated beautifully and the large kitchen well equipped for those who want to cook and eat in while staying there. The ocean views from the balcony and main bedroom were spectacular. The weather for our stay was beyond perfect and as a result, we didn’t want to leave the beach, even though one can arrange for bicycles and several other activities. Crystal Beach is an up and coming destination in the Destin area. It’s more secluded and less crowded than downtown Destin. The beach was just steps from

the condo and made it easy to go back and forth during the day and also transport our tropical drinks and other belongings. For dining, there are several walkable spots including Camille’s, the sister restaurant to well known Harbor Docks, known for their mouth watering sushi. We also took a drive one evening to the local spot, Crab Trap, for some delicious grouper and drinks. We discovered that we were not the only ones sharing a mother-daughter getaway. A Bedrock of Alpharetta While we all take a break from school this month, we pause to honor one special place in our community. Schools are the bedrock of communities across the United States. They weave the social tapestry together through education, rising home values, and respect for each other while also preparing young people for future success as citizens, coworkers, and community volunteers. Alpharetta is home to many highly rated K-5 schools where the foundations of education begin. One of the strongest in the area is Lake Windward Elementary (LWE), which U.S. News and World Report named one of the “Best Elementary Schools” in Fulton County and in the state of Georgia. In 2018, the U.S. Department of Education named LWE a Blue Ribbon School, and the Georgia Department of Education awarded the school a platinum award for the Highest Performing School and a silver award for the Greatest Gains in the State. Teachers at LWE have built enduring relationships with students and parents even through the incredible stress of the past two years. Covid-19 forced teachers and students to sever their relationships in the classroom and switch to remote learning when the nation shut down in March of 2020. When students came back into the classroom, teachers and students had to rebuild their relationships through obstacles of social distancing, masks, and teaching classes simultaneously face-to-face and online. Despite these obstacles, teachers at LWE continued to educate their pupils with astonishing quality, as evidenced by recent data. LWE teachers administered the Measure of Academic

Progress (MAP) assessment in October of 2021 to assess second and fourth graders in math and reading. The MAP test is a national assessment designed to measure student growth over a period of time. In math, 52% of LWE second graders and 54% of fourth graders scored in the highest rating category—which is equal to or higher than the 80th percentile across the nation. In reading, 49% of second graders and 55% of fourth grade students scored in the highest category. These scores are an astounding accomplishment that speaks to the investment in technology and to the passion, commitment, and foresight that LWE teachers have for their students. Terri Cox, a third-grade teacher, noted, “LWE had already been using many different online platforms before the pandemic. So when the pandemic hit, we continued learning at the same pace as we did in the classroom.” This standard of quality continues. LWE students took the iReady assessment this winter and it confirms what the MAP assessment suggested. Overall schoolwide iReady data reflects 76% scored above grade level or on grade level in math, and 78% of students scored above grade level or on grade level in reading, both of which are notable achievements. Fifth grade teacher, Daniel Hodge says, “Success of this school is primarily a product of our community.” He notes that he is “grateful that we were able to work together to assure that our students continued to achieve,” and that, “our success is a direct effect of the involvement and support that we had from our parents.”

The mission of The Drake House is to provide a lifeline of supportive housing and enrichment programs for single mothers and their children who are experiencing homelessness in the North Fulton area. Our vision is to be an integral part of our community, to facilitate financial security and ultimately, housing stability. We provide fully furnished private apartments to each family, a food pantry, laundry services, and other basic necessities free of cost while moms work with their family service managers to develop personalized empowerment plans to reduce debt, achieve a living wage, and attain market rate housing. The Drake House provides support for families through wraparound services such as a dedicated career coach, weekly life skills workshops, mentoring support, financial success coaches, and a redesigned youth enrichment program that will provide a two-generation approach to poverty and homelessness.
