My brothers are my rocks. My sister is my anchor. Our dad "Spud" passed in 1999 from nasty mesothelioma and at his memorial service in Charlotte, we stood around the piano and sang a medley of his favorite songs. How we got through that without drowning in an ocean of tears is nothing short of a miracle. We looked at one another in the eyes, held on tight and smiled. That much has not changed. He was an enthusiastic and energetic piano player at family reunions, church potlucks, Rotary sing-alongs and parties. One snowy morning years ago, he got a call from a friend whose daughter was getting married and just had the band cancel because of icy roads. Spud grabbed a tie, slipped behind the wheel of our station wagon and made his way to the reception. The bride was a friend of mine and hugged me at a recent high school reunion, thankful for dad's can-do attitude and piano prowess. Now, I see (and hear) my dad in my brothers and it's a joy. They share the same saunter. His laugh lives on in them and I hear his booming baritone when they sing. And, that's often. I feel dad with me when I sail on Lake Michigan, hike the trails behind the cottage where we spent summers and whenever I feel low. "Come on, sis, let's go!" I'm so very blessed to be surrounded by siblings who love unconditionally, celebrate often through song and laughter and hold one another up. Just like dad. Enjoy this issue dedicated to men. Happy Father's Day, friends!

Sharing, Advocating, Healing Many of us will never be touched by ovarian cancer but, for those of us who have been, it is a life changing experience that will forever live in the minds and hearts of the entire family. Dan Lauerman’s wife of 33 years, Kim, was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer Thanksgiving week of 2017. It changed their world forever. “Ovarian cancer is obviously a disease no one wants to be involved with,” says Dan. He and Kim live in Alpharetta. “Kim exuded confidence that we would beat the cancer from day one.”

Ovarian cancer often has no symptoms in the early stages. Because there is no test, most women are diagnosed much later in the progression of the disease. “The disturbing thing about this cancer is that Kim had no symptoms until the day before she was diagnosed.” Women may have no symptoms, but may experience abdomen or pelvic pain, fatigue, gastrointestinal and abdominal issues. Kim and Dan faced ovarian cancer together and, along with their two sons, they were an unstoppable positive force. The couple weathered the continuous tests, procedures, and treatments. “She had a

‘can-do’ attitude from the moment she was diagnosed, which has continued through today,” says Dan. During the second round of chemotherapy Dan and Kim scheduled long weekend get-aways every three weeks and drove everywhere from Gulf Shores to Amelia Island and Destin to Myrtle Beach. Kim first learned of the Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance (GOCA) from her oncologist and in March of 2019 she championed the Shaken, Not Stirred Gala charity auction. Kim is very much looking forward to becoming involved with the organization. “I think advocacy has helped Kim feel like she is making a CONTINUED >

For the third year in a row GOCA has opted for a virtual Shaken, Not Stirred charity fundraising broadcast. This year’s broadcast is being held on June 12th, starting at 6:55 p.m. The one-hour broadcast features educational and informative content about the organization and its mission, highlights members of their community, and ways to support their ongoing Bag of Hope program. The Alpharetta Music Club showcases extraordinarily gifted musical artists in intimate environments. The club focuses on classical music with a sprinkling of musical theatre and other genres. The Alpharetta Music Club meets on the second Sunday of each month in the beautiful Black Box Theatre at the Alpharetta Arts Center. Wine, hors d’oeuvres and exquisite music with neighbors and friends make this an exceptional event.

David is a concert pianist (with eight commercially available CDs), recording pianist, film recording pianist and composer. Together with Mike, he produced and composed the very successful BARK! The Musical, which ran for two years in Los Angeles (the third longest-running show in that city’s history) and has been mounted on three continents and many U.S. cities. His husband Mike was a successful music editor for films such as Pursuit of Happiness, Remember The Titans, Princess Diaries, Armageddon, and others. “We share food and drink in a relaxed atmosphere,” says David of the Music Club salons. “We meet on the third Sunday of each month and have grown to over 150 members. Our past performers include singers from Opera Atlanta and instrumentalists from the Atlanta and Asheville Symphonies.” Each attendee pays $20 and brings either a beverage or finger food. All monies go to the artists or to pay incidental expenses such as chair rental and such. “Our concerts are sold-out events, averaging around 45-55 people depending on the capacity of the host’s home.” Upcoming featured artists include Tiffany Uzoije, soprano; MK Penley & André Ellerby, musical theatre; LeSean Lewis, baritone; Andy Hudson, clarinetist; and Victoria Hill, soprano. “All of these women are quite accomplished,” says David. “Ann Marie is completing her doctorate in voice this spring and has performed extensively. Tiffany appears frequently with Opera Atlanta and is the mother of two young children. MK is an amazing theatrical performer and mother of two children. Victoria will graduate from Juilliard this year and was the first runner up to Miss America in 2019, as well as being Miss Georgia that year. All have a remarkable presence and are extraordinarily compelling in their performance. All are also lovely human beings that I am honored to accompany,” says David. Discover music and join the club. The show is Saturday, June 11 at Mimosa Hall. The July concert features Andy Hudson, clarinet and the August salon features Victoria Hill, soprano.
