I am proud to be a member of the founding board for a new nonprofit, Reeling in Recovery. As a fly fisher, I find peace on the river so it's easy (and an honor) to support a group providing recovering addicts with access to the sport that brings joy and healing to so many. Shannon and Burt Wright, owners of hair restoration studio Absolute Image Consulting, understand that living in gratitude is simple after seeing sick children still radiate joy. As experts helping men and women with non-surgical hair loss replacement, the Wrights have also assisted children experiencing illness-related alopecia. They give everyone the same level of service and care, and understand that restoring natural-looking hair means restoring self-confidence, too. Last month, the Wrights and Williams Cancer Foundation held their first Phoenix Benefit, which raised $17,000 to continue cancer research, help people receive treatment and recover emotionally. We talked to the Wrights about their unique business and how they’ve remained grounded and grateful.

Q: THIS IS A SEASON OF GIVING. WHY IS GENEROSITY AND GIVING SO IMPORTANT TO YOU?

Q: YOUR BUSINESS IS TRULY AN EXTENSION OF YOUR GENEROUS SPIRIT. WHAT DRIVES YOU?

Shannon and Burt Wright: We periodically saw children with hair loss for one reason or another, whose parents were dealing with a mountain of expenses from medical bills. It took just one time seeing a single mother’s heart sink when she heard how expensive it would be, for us to realize we could do more to help her and her little girl. So, we offered our service for free and helped with the cost of the products. When we finally attached her hair, that little girl’s eyes got so big and bright, and her mother, aunt and dad were all crying. We realized what this meant.

A: Absolute Image Consulting Inc. is a unique business. We come to work every day to make someone’s life better. We accomplish that all day. We’re an art studio, a therapist center, a life coach studio, an escape, and a place for healing, self-expression, and self-discovery. It’s a dream come true. We aren’t just part of our community, we are our community. You can see our work at the grocery store, the ball game, the board meeting, the neighborhood pool and on network television. We’re everywhere, but you would never know it, and that’s the goal!

A: My husband and I both came from very humble beginnings, and it was a struggle to break through. We both know what it means to want and, more importantly, to need something just out of reach. Providing for someone in that same situation is priceless to us.

Q: HOW CAN READERS GET INVOLVED AND HELP? A: We just held our inaugural benefit event and saw how generous and caring people can be. That was a great start to something we hope to continue for many years. We plan to hold the next event in early spring 2024. We hope people stay connected and inspired to help. And when they see the announcement for the next event, we hope they will join us.

Giving Back Feeds Them Dr. Sandra Vargas Dr. Sandra Vargas is the owner of North Atlanta Family Dentistry and the founder of Together We Smile 501(c)3 nonprofit. As a child growing up in Colombia, South America, Sandra empathized with the struggling communities that were not able to get the support needed for the necessities of life and generation after generation lived in extreme poverty. Sandra founded the Together We Smile Charity (TogetherWeSmile.org) to make an immediate impact on these communities and realize her dream of service to the people of these communities that Sandra carried with her from childhood. The charity delivers medical treatment, supplies and health education.

Mike Kozel Mike Kozel, a retired technology executive, has been leading the Toys for Tots/TurningPoint Holiday Golf Tournament at the Echelon Golf Club in Alpharetta for the past 14 years, raising more than $350,000. Proceeds from the event support TurningPoint Breast Cancer Rehabilitation’s operations, where Mike serves as vice chair of the board. Stephanie Fischer Stephanie is passionate about the Georgia ProStart program, a two year, industry-backed culinary arts and restaurant management program for high school students. The program reaches approximately 145,000 students in nearly 1,800 schools in all 50 states, Washington, DC, and the Territory of Guam. She is vice president of corporate operations of Paradies Lagardère Travel Retail Dining Division. The Dining Division currently operates in 43 airports with 170 locations and 80-plus concepts/brands in their portfolio. Stephanie joined the board of directors of the Georgia Restaurant Association in 2017. In 2019, Stephanie was elected to the executive committee, and in 2022 is the incoming chairman of the board. Stephanie was named as a Woman of Influence in the Food Industry’s 15th Edition by The Griffin Report, March 2020. Stephanie and her husband reside in Roswell.

Alpharetta resident Julie Anne Cooper has launched a new children’s book series, along with co-author Wendy Brant. Bonta Friends features a kind, lovable cast of characters designed to celebrate the many people and customs around the world, perfect for all ages. The Bonta Friends series introduces the first five friends with many more to come: Hanukkah Veronica, Halloween Hannah, Christmas Chloe, Diwali Deepa, and Kwanzaa Keisha. Each Bonta Friend features a book and a beautiful, soft plush doll. The first Bonta Friends book and doll in the series to launch is Hanukkah Veronica: The Mitzvah Fairy, available now. An Attitude of Gratitude

Scott Rigsby lost his legs at age 18, but never stopped running.

Scott Rigsby turned tragedy into triumph. Despite losing his legs, he became a world-class athlete, author, speaker, and philanthropist. Scott was the first double-amputee on prosthetics to complete the Hawaiian Ironman Triathlon, which includes swimming 2.4-miles, biking 112 miles and running 26.2-miles in one day! He also finished the Boston Marathon six times! Scott’s story is inspirational and aspirational, and his zest for life is contagious. In 1986, Scott had a catastrophic truck accident that eventually claimed his lower legs and left him with a traumatic brain injury. He suffered from depression and addiction, but overcame these tremendous obstacles to become a record-breaking endurance athlete. He learned to define his life by what he has and not what he doesn’t have. “My body doesn’t define me,” Scott told Alpharetta City Lifestyle Magazine recently, "Nor do my legs. Whether made of shiny metal or smooth skin, they're a gift to share, not a burden to bear.” Though Scott is now known for his upbeat attitude, he admits that he’s not always positive. He says that there are periods when he struggles with fear, doubt, and uncertainty; and when he yells, screams, and sometimes throws a fit because things aren't going his way. When these times arise, he says, “I remind myself that it’s not my full story and that God is a kind, wise, benevolent, and all-knowing heavenly father with a wonderful plan for my life.” However, he can remember his greater purpose and uses his faith to carry on. This strong faith allowed Scott to remain grateful and willing to give back to others throughout his life. Scott grew up with a special needs brother who taught him to have compassion for those with physical or mental challenges. He believes that his brother Tim defied the odds to live a fulfilling life, making him the real “Ironman” of the family. Tim’s example of resilience inspired Scott to push beyond his limits following his accident and to have empathy

for veterans and others dealing with hardships. He understands the value of love and encouragement from those around him. The Roswell/Alpharetta community has powerfully supported Scott, humbling him with their servant’s heart. “They gave me a safe refuge to build a life devoted to serving others,” Scott insists. “For the community’s investment, I'm eternally thankful. So much of my athletic success and desire to be a better person can be attributed to these special neighbors.” This Thanksgiving, Scott is incredibly grateful to be surrounded by friends and family. Though his parents have passed away, he is thankful for the family they created and the gift of love that continues to grow. “My parents were married for 66 years and had seven children, 14 grandkids, and 20 great-grandchildren. I am so thankful for the upbringing from my parents and the special times we shared over many Thanksgivings. FILLING + 6-8 Granny Smith apples (depending on size) + ½ cup of organic coconut sugar + 2-4 tablespoons of organic unbleached flour + 1 tablespoon of cinnamon + 2 tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice + 2 tablespoons of organic butter finely chopped Peel and cut the apples into thick slices, place in a bowl and toss with lemon juice. Add coconut sugar, organic butter, cinnamon and organic
