COVENANT HOUSE SLEEP OUT The Sleep Out is a fundraising and awareness campaign. In November, brave individuals will head outside in cities across North America, carrying sleeping bags and cardboard to serve as their beds. They lay on the sidewalks in 15 cities, looking up at Covenant House shelters where young people are safe and warm inside. RAD KOVACIK had a charmed childhood, though (like most of us) he didn’t realize it until he was looking for a home and community for his young family. He and his wife Sarah wanted to establish roots before their oldest daughter, Avery started kindergarten, with plans to remain planted until their kids graduate high school. t's one thing to imagine the potential your backyard holds. And it's another to see landscaping plans on paper. But what really allows a homeowner to fully realize what a space could transform into is to actually walk through a perfectly manicured space — and think about how good it feels. That's just the goal with the new showcase from Miller Landscaping, a Woodstock-based company specializing in outdoor spaces. Their second location, opened in mid-2016, the Miller Landscaping showcase provides potential clients a place they can explore and see the workmanship on display. Boasting a pool, fire pit, outdoor kitchen and grill and more, it's an impressive space. The new showcase is located in southwest Canton, in a subdivision called The Reserve at BridgeMill near the banks of a finger of Lake Allatoona. It's the latest development of a company more than 30 years old. Bruce Miller started Miller Landscaping back in 1985. Focusing mostly on plants and sod at first, Miller grew his company's knowledge and skill sets over the decades, and now focuses more on outdoor living, incorporating but not limited to: pools, patios, decks, arbors, kitchens, putting greens, water features, walls, fencing, irrigation, lighting and plants. They've turned steep, at-first-glance unusable back yards into multitiered patios prime for entertaining. They've taken formless expanses of grass and dirt and created wonderfully intricate gardens with rows of seasonal plants and sculpted walls. They consult with customers to meet specific needs, like a recent in-ground pool they constructed that was built to be accessible for a homeowner with disabilities. Miller Landscape’s team also creates a computer-designed 3-D rendering of a project rather than just the typical bird's-eye view of sketches, letting homeowners change the point of view to really imagine themselves in the space and how it will really look from any perspective. "I'd say the personal aspect of the company sets us apart," says Britany Heater, the director of marketing and sales for Miller Landscaping. "Bruce is very much involved in the projects. Even though there's an assigned project manager, he likes just to peek in and let people know he's on top of things. ouldn’t it be cool to have our own farmers market or

coffee shop?” Ryan Bowersox would say to his wife Beth. “That would be a great way to serve the community!” Beth would say. For years, this was the couple’s dialogue, but it was no more than an idea. They would frequently look at spaces for lease, but the prices in Atlanta were high. For years, their dream remained a distant one. Until one day, on the way to take family photos in Alpharetta, the family drove past a building for lease on the corner of Hickory Flat Road and Birmingham Highway. “We both looked at each other, and it was serendipitous,” said Beth. “The building was gorgeous, and we knew at that moment, this would be the perfect spot to open our market.” Within 24 hours, Beth and Ryan had drafted a business plan and sent it to the landlord, and six months later, the building was renovated. The couple’s dream for a farmers market only needed a name, and they settled on Wilbur and Rudy’s Farmtable, named after their children, Wilbur, age five, and Rudy, age three. The first few months that the Bowersox had the building, they used it primarily as a farmers market, selling locally-made jams and jellies. The building was huge, and the farmers market only took up half the space. “Throughout this year, we’ve had a better idea about how we fit into the community,” said Ryan. “Customers would come in and offer suggestions; ‘you should serve coffee,’ or ‘why not have wine and appetizers at night…’ and It just molded into a little bit of everything, based on customer wants.” The Bowersox’s original idea was to have a one-stop shop for locals to get gourmet dinners to-go, but it didn’t take off. In December, Wilbur and Rudy’s sold Christmas trees and gave away free cups of coffee, and it was an instant hit. CONTINUED >
