A Fresh Start for Fall
Can you believe it's already August?
It feels like just yesterday we were making summer plans, and now we're shopping for school supplies, checking class schedules, and figuring out how to get everyone back into a routine. As much as we love the slower pace of summer, there is something refreshing about the start of a new school year.
Back-to-school season gives us a chance to hit the reset button. We start setting bedtimes again, planning meals, organizing calendars, and creating a little more structure in our days. It may take a few weeks to find our rhythm, but those routines often help our families feel more balanced and connected.
If you're a parent, you know the transition can bring a mix of emotions. There is excitement for new teachers, new opportunities, and new friendships. There can also be a little anxiety, whether it's your child's first day of kindergarten or their last first day before graduation. Every stage comes with its own joys and challenges.
And let's not forget about our pets. They get used to having the kids home all summer and often notice when the house suddenly becomes quieter. A little extra playtime, a walk around the neighborhood, or simply sticking to a consistent schedule can help make the adjustment easier for them too.
In this month's Kids & Pets Issue, we're celebrating the families, businesses, and organizations that help make our community such a great place to live. Inside, you'll find resources, stories, and local businesses that support both the two-legged and four-legged members of our households.
One of the things I love most about this time of year is the sense of possibility it brings. A new school year reminds us that every season offers an opportunity to learn something new, build better habits, and grow in ways we may not have expected.
As your family settles into the months ahead, I hope you find moments to slow down and enjoy the little things. The morning hugs, the after-school conversations, the walks with your dog, and the family dinners often become the memories we treasure most.
Wishing you a smooth transition, a successful school year, and plenty of reasons to celebrate this season with the people and pets you love.

Good Human of the Month
In the Connemara Meadow Nature Preserve, something special is happening. A wildlife photographer turned nature advocate is doing her best to support an often misunderstood species: the coyote.
Local resident Karin Saucedo has made it her mission to educate others about these special creatures through her work with her organization, Song Dog Watch. Karin’s journey started in 2017 in the Connemara Meadow. “We saw a coyote with mange, and we wanted to see if there was a way that we could help make it better.”
While many people are afraid of coyotes, worried about their pets and young children being injured by these wild neighbors, Karin was more concerned about how to help the hurt coyote. She spent countless hours learning about the behavior and movement of coyotes and coyote families. Now, she uses her knowledge to help others, and currently serves as the Texas State Coordinator for Project Coyote, as a senior volunteer at In-Sync Exotics, and as a partner photographer for Panthera, which focuses exclusively on conserving the world’s 40 wild cat species.
Despite all of her work with these, and more, organizations, Karin still finds time to educate individuals. According to local resident Diana Hardin, “Karin answers calls, Facebook messages, and more from Allen residents with coyote or other wild animal concerns. Whether it is an injured animal, unwarranted fears, or something else, Karin quickly responds in person to educate others and allay their fears.”
According to Song Dog Watch, “As a keystone carnivore, coyotes play a critical role helping to maintain healthy ecosystems and species diversity. Because coyotes occupy an important space in the ecosystem and are everywhere it’s important to understand their behaviors to safely coexist.” Make sure you are aware of our surroundings, that you manage the safety of pets and children, especially at dawn and dusk, and that you never feed wildlife by keeping pet food and water indoors.

BOWE'S BUDDIES HELPS ANIMALS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS THRIVE IN FOSTER CARE BEFORE FINDING THEIR FOREVER HOMES
ARTICLE BY ELIZABETH FELKER PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF BOWE’S BUDDIES
Bowe’s Buddies was founded on one simple belief: every animal deserves a second chance. And no one embodies that more than Bowe himself. Bowe’s story began in July 2020, when his mother—young, sick, and heavily pregnant—was brought into a local shelter. She gave birth to seven kittens in the safety of the shelter, but like many facilities overwhelmed by intake numbers, there were no foster homes available right away.
By the time a foster spot opened, only two kittens were still waiting: Bowe and his sister Peach. Peach was healthy, happy, and quickly adopted. But Bowe had a different path ahead of him. He was born with radial hypoplasia, a congenital condition that caused underdevelopment of the bones in his front legs. His physical difference meant he needed someone with experience, patience, and the kind of love that sees beyond limitations.
What started as a foster placement turned into a forever home. And Bowe didn’t just find safety and care. He inspired the entire mission of Bowe’s Buddies. Today, Bowe’s Buddies is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting animals just like Bowe: those who need extra care, time, and compassion to thrive. They partner with the Allen Animal Shelter to recruit, train, and support foster volunteers who provide temporary homes for cats and dogs in need.
Their work ensures that animals don’t have to wait in overcrowded shelters or face euthanasia because of space or medical needs. Instead, they get the chance to heal, grow, and prepare for their forever homes—just like Bowe did.
Today, Bowe lives with Bowe’s Buddies founder Elizabeth Felker and continues to inspire everything Bowe’s Buddies does. He plays an active role in welcoming new foster pets into the home—offering comfort, companionship, and calm to animals who are often scared and unsure. Bowe is more than the nonprofit’s namesake. He’s a gentle guide and a daily reminder of what a second chance can truly mean. He’s a daily reminder of why this work matters. He’s living proof that with a little patience and a lot of heart, even the most overlooked animals can become someone’s everything. How can you get involved? Donate and foster!
BOWE’S BUDDIES PROVIDES: TRAINING
In-shelter training is given on a one-on-one basis with a Bowe’s Buddies coordinator at the shelter. Training is specific to the type of animal fostered (i.e., dog or cat) and the foster’s level of experience, and includes:
• Keys to successful fostering
• Guidelines for managing family pets around fosters
• Typical medication/dietary needs
FOSTER SUPPORT
The following is provided to support active fosters:
• A Bowe’s Buddies phone number is provided to foster volunteers in the event that there are questions while they’re fostering.
• All coordination and scheduling (vaccinations, spay/neuter scheduling, foster return) needed with the shelter will be facilitated by Bowe’s Buddies coordinator.
• A Bowe’s Buddies coordinator periodically checks in with the active foster throughout the in-home fostering experience.
• All supplies needed for fostering are provided by the animal shelter.

Nonprofit of the Month-Kids!
Foundation for C.H.O.I.C.E. Fosters Student Success through Mentorship and Connection
Foundation for C.H.O.I.C.E. (Consider How One Individual Changes Everything) is a Dallas-based nonprofit dedicated to helping students discover their path toward college, career, and life success through mentorship, career readiness, and meaningful community connections.
Founded on the belief that one caring adult can change a young person’s future trajectory, the organization serves students across Dallas-area schools through structured, in-school programming designed to remove barriers that often prevent students from accessing guidance and opportunities outside school hours. Through one-to-one mentorship, career exploration, financial literacy, workforce exposure, and post-secondary planning, Foundation for C.H.O.I.C.E. equips students with the confidence and resources to build successful futures.
At the center of the organization’s work is its 27-week mentorship curriculum, which pairs students with dedicated mentors who consistently meet with and support them throughout the school year. The curriculum focuses on life skills, communication, goal setting, college and career readiness, leadership development, financial literacy, and future planning. This structured approach allows students to build genuine relationships with mentors while gaining practical tools that prepare them for life after high school.
Throughout the year, students participate in hands-on activities and conversations that introduce them to industries,
careers, and educational pathways they may have never considered before. Community leaders, business professionals, and volunteers work directly with students to help them strengthen communication skills, prepare for interviews, complete FAFSA applications, explore trade programs and colleges, and build realistic goals for life after graduation.
Foundation for C.H.O.I.C.E. also provides students with access to career exploration fairs, workplace visits, guest speakers, workforce readiness workshops, scholarship guidance, and corporate mentorship experiences that connect classroom learning to real-world opportunities. Through its Business Champion program, companies and professionals partner with students by hosting workplace visits, participating in career conversations, offering internships, supporting scholarships, and creating meaningful exposure to career pathways students may not otherwise experience.
Throughout the summer, Foundation for C.H.O.I.C.E. hosts mentor training, volunteer workshops, and planning sessions to prepare mentors and community partners for the upcoming school year. These trainings help ensure students are paired with mentors who are equipped and engaged, ready to make a lasting impact from day one.
The organization currently partners with multiple schools throughout Dallas ISD and has impacted thousands of students since its founding. What makes Foundation
“Foundation for C.H.O.I.C.E. equips students with the confidence and resources to build successful futures.”
for C.H.O.I.C.E. especially impactful is the consistency of its mentorship model. Students are simply not attending a one-time presentation. They are building meaningful relationships with adults who encourage them, listen to them, and remind them that their future matters. Much like the comfort and unconditional support that pets can provide children during difficult times, mentorship can create stability, confidence, and an emotional connection that can have a long-lasting impact on a young person’s well-being and sense of purpose.
Foundation for C.H.O.I.C.E. believes every student deserves someone in their corner. By connecting students with mentors, businesses, and opportunities, the organization continues to create lasting changes in schools and communities across North Texas.

CHILDREN’S HEALTH EXPANDS YOUTH BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SERVICES TO COLLIN COUNTY, BRINGING FAMILIES GREATER ACCESS TO SPECIALIZED CARE AND AUTISM SUPPORT
BRINGING HOPE CLOSER TO HOME
A vital new medical expansion is gracing Plano. For over a decade, Children’s Health has traditionally housed mental and behavioral services for youth in its Dallas location. As of July 27, several of these services will be available at Children’s Health in Plano through a new dedicated behavioral health suite.
“This is a dream coming to fruition,” explains senior director of behavioral health Elizabeth Widtfelt. “It’s been years in the making, and a lot of work has gone on behind the scenes to make this a reality.”
The Plano expansion brings four specialized behavioral health services to families in Collin County and surrounding communities. New offerings include the Teen Recovery Program, a one-of-a-kind service that treats adolescents facing substance use and co-occurring mental health challenges through intensive outpatient therapy, group counseling, psychiatric care, and family support services. The SPARC Program provides evidence-based intensive outpatient treatment for youth struggling with severe depression through skills-based therapy, medication management, and parent education.
ARTICLE BY JESSICA CRANDALL LAWRENCE
The new suite will also offer Outpatient Psychiatry and Psychology Services, providing medication management, therapy, and ongoing behavioral health support for children and adolescents. In addition, Autism Outpatient Care will provide psychological evaluations, autism assessments, and neurodevelopmental support services designed to help families receive earlier diagnoses and intervention opportunities. Previously available only in Dallas, these programs are now accessible in Plano, expanding access to critical behavioral healthcare closer to home for North Texas families.
Children’s Health and UT Southwestern Medical Center share a longstanding joint pediatric enterprise that brings together nationally recognized expertise in patient care, research, and medical education. Through this partnership, the organizations collaborate to advance pediatric innovation, train future health care leaders, and improve outcomes for children across North Texas and beyond.
“We’re in a pretty serious behavioral health crisis as a country, and especially in Texas,” details Widtfeldt. “Access to care is significant for the children and adolescents that need these services. We know bringing it to where folks live and making it more accessible geographically makes a big difference.”
Statistics from the Centers of Disease Control (CDC) for youth mental health since the rise of the 2020 COVID pandemic indicate an increased need for these services. In 2023, many high school students in the United States reported persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness. And, nearly one in five teens seriously considered attempting suicide that year.
Mental and behavioral health challenges among children and teens continue to mount nationwide, and Widtfelt says families are becoming more receptive to discussing emotional struggles and seeking outside support. Still, modern childhood comes with increasing pressures. From social media, packed schedules, academic stress, and constant digital exposure, many young people are quietly struggling.
“On the outside, they may look like a rock star, but on the inside, they’re crumbling,” Widtfelt explains.
In addition to expanding mental health resources for adolescents, the new Plano suite will also provide specialized autism outpatient services for families seeking evaluations, developmental support, and earlier intervention opportunities. The program is designed to help children receive care while connecting parents with resources to support their child’s development.
“The earlier that you identify something, the earlier you intervene, and the better the prognosis is in the long run for kids,” Widtfelt says. “Early diagnosis really leads to better prognosis and early intervention. All those things are very critical.”
The need for autism services continues to grow nationwide. According to CDC findings, approximately 1 in 31 children in the United States has been identified with autism spectrum disorder, an increase from 1 in 44 children just a few years ago. Researchers say early screenings are helping more children receive diagnoses earlier, allowing families to access critical support services. Studies have shown that early intervention can vastly improve developmental outcomes, making timely evaluations an important first step for many families.
Design rendering, not an actual photo
T he expansion also complements several existing behavioral health programs already serving families at Children’s Health in Plano, including neuropsychology and eating disorder treatment services. While neuropsychology has previously maintained a presence in Plano, the new behavioral services suite allows for more collaboration between providers to help expand care. Eating disorder services, which already offer inpatient, partial hospitalization, and intensive outpatient levels of care, will also benefit from the more robust behavioral health footprint. Widtfeldt says the goal is to create a more entwined experience for families navigating complex needs.
“We support the whole family and ensure they have the tools they need to help their child,” she says. “We’re really trying to not only be a much-needed resource but be the
best at what we do. We want to make sure we’re providing the best care for the patients who receive services with us.”
Prior to the promising new development, many of these specialty programs were only available through Children’s Health in Dallas, often creating taxing commutes and additional barriers for families across Collin County. By expanding these services in Plano, Children’s Health is increasing access to specialized pediatric behavioral healthcare closer to where families live on the northeast side of the metroplex.
The new behavioral health suite officially launched on July 27 at Children’s Health Specialty Center 1 in Plano. Families interested in learning more or scheduling services can call the Children’s Health intake line at 214.456.8899

THE BACK-TO-SCHOOL Reset Every Family Needs
SIMPLE WAYS FAMILIES CAN PREPARE FOR A STRONG SCHOOL YEAR
ARTICLE BY SANDY TUTWILER
PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOSEPH RIVERS: JAY SONATA PHOTOGRAPHY
Back-to-school season brings a mix of emotions for families—excitement, anticipation, stress, and sometimes anxiety. While shopping for backpacks and school supplies is important, a strong school year begins with routines, healthy habits, confidence, and support systems that help students feel prepared both academically and emotionally.
Rebuild Routines Early
Summer schedules often mean later bedtimes, relaxed mornings, and less structure. Transitioning back into school routines gradually can make those first few weeks much smoother. Start adjusting sleep schedules one to two weeks before school begins. Re-establish consistent morning and evening routines, limit late-night screen time, and create a family calendar with important dates and activities.
Children thrive when expectations are predictable, and routines help reduce stress for both students and parents.
Fuel the Brain with Good Nutrition
Nutrition plays a major role in a student’s ability to focus, retain information, and manage energy throughout the school day. When schedules become hectic, it can be easy to rely on convenience foods that leave children feeling sluggish or distracted.
Starting the day with a balanced breakfast that includes protein, healthy fats, and fiber can improve concentration and stamina. Packing nutritious snacks and encouraging hydration throughout the day also helps students maintain focus and mood.
Back-to-school season is a great opportunity to reset family eating habits and establish routines that support both physical health and academic performance.
Focus on Confidence, Not Perfection
One of the biggest predictors of academic success is confidence. Students who believe they are capable are more likely to participate in class, ask questions, and persevere through challenges. CONTINUED >
Parents can help by celebrating effort and progress rather than perfection. Encourage realistic goals, praise hard work, and remind students that growth takes time.
The goal is not to raise perfect students. The goal is to raise resilient learners who are willing to keep trying when things get difficult.
Create a Space for Learning at Home
A dedicated learning environment can make a tremendous difference in focus and productivity. Students do not need elaborate study rooms or expensive setups. A quiet, organized space with school supplies readily available and a consistent homework routine often helps students feel more prepared and less overwhelmed.
Small habits create structure, and structure builds confidence.
Don’t Wait Too Long to Ask for Help
Academic support is no longer just for students who are failing classes. Many families seek tutoring to help students stay ahead, build confidence, strengthen executive functioning skills, or prepare for advanced coursework and standardized testing.
preparation, encouragement, communication, and partnership. When parents, teachers, and support systems work together, students gain more than academic skills—they gain confidence in themselves.
As another school year begins, the greatest gift we can give our children is not perfection, but the reassurance that they are supported, capable, and ready to grow.
Sandy Tutwiler is the owner of Tutor Doctor of Frisco and McKinney, a personalized tutoring company serving students from pre-K through college in all subjects, including test preparation. Tutor Doctor provides one-to-one tutoring both in-home and online, with customized learning plans designed around each student’s unique needs and learning style.
“When parents, teachers, and support systems work together, students gain more than academic skills—they gain confidence in themselves.”
Personalized support can also reduce nightly homework battles and relieve pressure within the home. When students feel understood and supported, they are more likely to enjoy learning and develop long-term confidence in their abilities.
A Strong Year Starts with Support
Successful school years are rarely built on perfect schedules or perfect grades. They are built on

Through Tutor Doctor, she and her team partner closely with families to create supportive learning experiences that help students thrive both academically and personally.
Sandy believes that successful learning starts with understanding each child as an individual and creating a plan that meets them where they are while helping them grow into confident, independent learners.

TREY & KATIE KENNEDY
ON MARRIAGE, KIDS, AND THE COMEDY OF REAL LIFE
Trey Kennedy makes a living finding comedy in regular life. Marriage. Toddlers. Yoga pants. The Thursday-night scramble between school dropoffs, soccer practice, and whatever has to be done by morning. Twelve years in, it shows: millions of followers across every platform, three stand-up specials, a sold-out Relatable Tour, and a style of humor fans send each other captioned, “Are you watching me?” He delivers the kind of comedy that travels because everyone’s living some version of it.
Katie, his wife of six years, is a former biomedical engineer who also built a modeling career. She’s now raising their kids and co-hosting Correct Opinions alongside Trey — the show where the two of them swap takes on marriage, parenting, and whatever came up that week.
Trey has been at this longer than people realize. An Edmond, Oklahoma kid who grew up playing basketball described himself as a “shy kid who never thought he’d be an entertainer.” He started making videos while attending Oklahoma State University. After building millions of followers on Vine before the platform shut down, he gave himself six months on Instagram and Facebook to see whether he could rebuild from zero. He did. Stand-up soon followed. His first special, Are You For Real?, streams on YouTube; the second, Grow Up, on Amazon Prime; the third, built around the Relatable Tour, wrapped earlier this year. “I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now,” he says. A slow climb, made one bit at a time.
ARTICLE BY KALI KASPRZYK PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES
“I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now.”
Most of what Trey writes lately starts in his own kitchen. Thomas is three and a half, and he is, in his father’s words, “a movie.” He narrates his own life from the moment his eyes open and mispronounces words in ways his parents now repeat to each other because no one else would believe them. His younger sister, Eva, is what Katie calls “the calm one.” With a third now in the mix, the Kennedys are officially outnumbered.
After six years of marriage, Trey and Katie have learned that the partnership runs best when it gets its own time on the calendar. So once a week, they leave the kids with a sitter and go out for coffee. “You need a system,” Katie says. “It’s about taking time to look each other in the eye. Not the kids. Not the cameras. Just each other.”
The same instinct shapes the work. Most of Trey’s trial and error happens onstage or on Instagram, but the first read is always Katie’s. “There’s only been one time ever I’ve had to be like, ‘you’re not doing that,’” she says. The rest of the time, she just laughs first.

THE ART OF THE UPSCALE

COMBOS TO Try:
CREATIVE COMBINATIONS THAT HIT DIFFERENT
The Sophisticated Sweet: Nutella, sliced strawberries, and a drizzle of honey on brioche bread
The Panini Perfection: Peanut butter, fresh blueberries, and marshmallow cream pressed between sourdough slices
The Beautiful Mess: Your favorite nut butter topped with sliced fresh peaches, kiwi, or berries, then drizzled with golden honey or sprinkled with toasted coconut on thickcut bread

PRO TIPS FOR LUNCHBOX SUCCESS
Toast your bread lightly for extra texture, even if you’re making it ahead. Create a barrier with your spread to prevent soggy sandwiches—apply nut butter to both sides, then add your sweet elements in the middle. Pack fresh elements separately and assemble just before eating when possible. Cut into fun shapes with cookie cutters, wrap in parchment paper tied with twine, or pack in a bento box with complementary sides like apple slices, fancy crackers, or dark chocolate squares.
THE BOTTOM LINE
An elevated PB&J proves that sometimes the best meals come from taking something familiar and making it special. These upgraded versions will have everyone asking for the recipe—and maybe even offering to trade lunches.

Homemade Dog Food
ARTICLE BY AMY TINNIN PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
My two pugs are more than pets—they’re part of the family. That’s why I started making their food at home, and it’s been one of the most popular posts on my blog. You may be surprised just how easy this recipe is. I add all the ingredients to my slow-cooker to cook, and my dogs love it. If you decide to try this recipe for your pet, please consult your veterinarian. Every dog has different needs based on age, weight, and any health issues. You can even share this recipe with your vet to see if any changes are needed. The ingredients are flexible and can be easily swapped to substitute the turkey for chicken or beef, and even try different dog-safe vegetables. Making dog food at home isn’t hard—it just takes a little planning, and my dogs love it.
