THE CENTER FOR HEALING B Y L I F E PAT H S Y S T E M S
On May 6th, 2023, the North Texas community was struck by an incredible tragedy at Allen Premium Outlets when nine people, including the perpetrator, were killed during a shooting — the youngest of whom was a three-year-old boy — and seven others were injured. This event gripped the nation as graphic images were distributed freely on social media and in news reports, leaving many feeling hopeless, helpless, and disturbed. Out of this tragedy emerged The Center for Healing, a resiliency center looking to make a difference and help the community come together and heal. Studies show that exposure to tragedies like the one in Allen can cause communal trauma that continues to impact communities, sometimes unknowingly, even years after the event. The Center for Healing was founded by LifePath Systems, the behavioral health authority of Collin County, to provide support and resources to those affected by the shooting. LifePath Systems recognized that there was a great need for a place where people could gather to heal and find strength in each other. The goal is to create a safe and welcoming space where people can share their stories, connect with others who have experienced similar trauma, learn coping skills to help them move forward, or simply spend time doing activities in a place that they know they'll be understood. The Center offers a variety of programs and services to meet the needs of the community including individual and group counseling, art therapy and support groups for survivors and their families. The team also has the ability to provide community based groups and workshops anywhere in Collin County,
offering educational workshops on the impact on trauma and community resiliency. The Center's Director, Debbie Clark, is insistent on educating the Collin County community that this is a resiliency center, not a mental health clinic. "As trained therapists and counselors, we are prepared to offer mental health services," Debbie assures, "but more than that, we want The Center to be a place where people can simply come and enjoy a safe space with their family." The Center also hosts workshops and events where members of the community can spend time doing crafts, enjoying refreshments, and participating in activities, such as playing with therapy dogs or taking pictures with Santa Claus. Since The Center for Healing was founded through a grant from the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA), any person aware of the shooting, no matter where they are located, can make use of the center at absolutely no cost to them. Over the last several months, the resiliency center has provided a muchneeded resource for those affected by the shooting and has helped to promote healing and hope, demonstrating the power of community support and the importance of prioritizing mental health in the wake of trauma. The Center for Healing is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of community. It was founded in response to a tragedy, but it has become so much more – a beacon of hope and a source of strength for those in need. The Center serves as a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is always a way forward and that together, our community can come through great tragedy.

Reflecting on his Fairview tenure, he warmly described the close-knit relationships and camaraderie, underscoring the positive environment that enriches the overall experience. The interview took a poignant turn as Miller shared a glimpse into his personal life. His 5-year-old daughter, Finley, battles DIPG, a terminal brain stem cancer. HERBED BUTTER STEAK WITH GARLIC MASHED P O TAT O E S A N D R O A S T E D A S P A R A G U S Ingredients: • • • • • • • • • •
2 ribeye steaks (or your preferred cut) 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened 2 teaspoons fresh thyme, chopped 2 teaspoons fresh rosemary, chopped 4 large potatoes, peeled and quartered 4 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 cup milk or cream 1 bunch asparagus, ends trimmed Olive oil for drizzling Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 400°F. 2. In a small bowl, mix the softened butter, thyme, rosemary, salt, and pepper until well combined. Set aside. 3. Place the quartered potatoes in a large pot of salted water. Bring to a boil and cook until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork, about 15-20 minutes. Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. 4. While the potatoes are cooking, season the steaks generously with salt and pepper on both sides. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add a drizzle of olive oil. Sear the steaks for about 3-4 minutes on each side for medium-rare, or cook to your desired doneness. Remove the steaks from the skillet and set aside. For thicker cuts, you can finish cooking in the oven. 5. In the same skillet, add the asparagus, drizzle with olive oil, and season with salt and pepper. Toss to coat evenly. Transfer the skillet to the preheated oven and roast for about 10-12 minutes, or until the asparagus is tender-crisp. 6. While the asparagus is roasting, add the minced garlic, milk or cream, salt, and pepper to the cooked potatoes. Mash until smooth and creamy. 7. Serve the steaks with a dollop of the herbed butter on top, alongside a scoop of garlic mashed potatoes and roasted asparagus.

Traveling can be as stressful as it is sublime. Exhausting as it is inspiring. Traveling as a couple requires additional planning and communication with a healthy dose of patience. Much like marriage! But, waking up in a faraway place, exploring unknown terrain together and leaving your routine and all its trappings behind can be therapeutic. You both can take on new roles and release tired habits.

Share planning and talk about your goals for the trip. Do you want to completely unplug or will one of you need excellent wifi to call into a few meetings?

If you’re parents, consider setting boundaries for texting and phone calls so you can put the phone away and immerse in one another. Let the kids know you will be checking your phone at a certain time each day (and stick to that). Let the grandparents or caregivers handle the day to day drama.

Take turns charting a course for the day. On day one, you check museum opening times, get the timed tickets and find a nearby spot for a healthy lunch. On day two, you sit back and let your partner call the Uber and source out the perfect shopping district, walking distance to a park. Enjoy the ride, either way.
