Kendra’s passion for travel and experience in event planning have come together to create My Haven Travel by Cruise Planners, a local travel agency located in Allen. She helps both newbies and seasoned travelers curate the big dream vacation they’ve always wanted but didn’t know how to plan.

Who is Kendra? Kendra Healy is a long-time Allen resident. She and her husband moved to Allen in 2011, but have been in the Plano and Frisco area since 1998. They have two sons who were very involved in Allen ISD. Their oldest, Parker, recently graduated from Texas State University with a Bachelor’s in marketing, and their youngest, Jaden, is currently on an athletic and academic scholarship at Colorado School of Mines studying business engineering. He’s also the outside linebacker for the school’s NCAA DII nationally ranked football team. Kendra always dreamed of having a business of her own. Combining her passion for travel, her work in hospitality, and her vast experience in event planning, opening My Haven Travel by Cruise Planners seemed like the natural next step to take. When she became an empty nester, she knew the time was right. In June 2022, she launched her business with an eye to help the community plan the vacations of their dreams, customizing and personalizing each adventure. She is an active member of the Allen Chamber of Commerce and several nonprofits. She is most involved in the Big Z Foundation. She serves as chairman of the Big Z Golf Tournament, the silent auction, and the Big Z Bash. Kendra’s favorite place to travel is in Stanley Cay in the Exuma Islands, which is home to the Bahamas’ world famous swimming pigs. “We stayed in Atlantis on the main island, and rented a charter plane to Exuma. From there, we boarded a private yacht for the day. First, it took us to a beautiful sandbar, right in the middle of the stunning blue ocean. We swam with the pigs and then sand sharks, and even snorkeled in one of the caves where a James Bond scene was filmed. After having lunch at a private yacht club, we flew back. It was unbelievable.”

Smiles, hugs, laughter and love filled the room at the 2023 Boots & Bow Ties Country Fair themed auction, held Saturday, February 11 at the Courtyard by Marriott Allen. The auction is the primary fundraiser for the Allen Special Olympics Delegation. It was evident that these Special Angels are more than a team. They are a family. “Most of our athletes love the social aspect of the program, but I love how it also teaches them life skills. It gives them something to do after high school. It shows them that it is okay not to win in competition as long as you get out and try,” explained Lisa Grantham, a veteran volunteer and Director with the Allen Special Olympics Delegation. Grantham’s involvement in the program began over 30 years ago when she was approached to assist with the bowling team, the only event offered to the athletes at the time. As a special education teacher at Story Elementary, being a coach for the Special Olympics team was a perk of the job. Once Grantham came aboard, the program was taken to new heights. In 1999, with the help of the local Kiwanis Club, Grantham and her team held the inaugural auction to support the organization. That year they raised over $50,000! The Allen Special Olympics Delegation has been hosting the event annually ever since. This year’s event consisted of both live and silent auctions, dinner, dancing, and, of course, lots of entertaining moments. Supporters of the organization joined the Special Angels in carnival games, raffle drawings and bidding on a plethora of items donated by local businesses. The bidding options consisted

of date night packages, sports memorabilia, luxury purses, vacation stays, family fun options and much more. There was truly something for everyone and every budget. Each year between $60,000-$75,000 is raised to benefit the athletes. The money enables the team to travel to competitions, covering their hotels, food, awards, banquets and even letter jackets for the athletes. Athlete Rachel Seba has been involved with the Special Olympics for over twenty years. Her favorite sport is swimming. Not only has she found competitive success through the program —her relay team placed first in Orlando during the Summer of 2022 — she's also found love. Her teammate, Scott Wendt, became her boyfriend after they attended the USA games together. They both hope to meet Michael Phelps one day and "continue competing together forever." The Allen Delegation currently supports aquatics, athletics, basketball, bocce, bowling, flag football, golf, powerlifting, soccer, tennis, volleyball and Unified Sports. Athletes may begin training as early as age six and compete in local and state competitions at age eight. The best part is that athletes never age out if they stay active in the program! The mission of the organization is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with special needs. They also aim to provide these athletes with continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, and experience joy while enabling athletes to create new friendships and share their gifts with their family and the community. The mission may be focused on training and sportsmanship, but it is clear that building character and heart takes the prize. The Allen athletes have a stellar reputation at competition. This season they had sixteen athletes who competed in a state event, and the

Regardless of their success, nearly every athlete we spoke with said their favorite aspect of the program was “Making friends who become family.” Allen is truly blessed to have these Special Angels among us.

ARTICLE BY ANGI BURNS At the start of the pandemic in March of 2020, as we all witnessed the challenges that our hospitals were facing, Crystella McIvor wanted to be part of the solution. Her daughter is a nurse and, as Crystella proudly proclaims, "Moms will climb Mt. Everest if it helps our kids, thus Support Our Scrubs was born." Crystella signed up for a continuing education course at Collin College to figure out how to establish and manage a nonprofit organization. The mission of her newly founded nonprofit, Support Our Scrubs, was to bring together the needs of first responders with the generosity of our communities to facilitate acts of kindness. In collaboration with numerous businesses and individuals, Support Our Scrubs has helped provide over 100,000 meals, care baskets, cups of coffee, cupcakes, gift cards, toys, gifts, thank you cards and more to hospitals across the metroplex. Additionally, they provide free yoga and guidance on breathing techniques to help with relaxation and mental health support. Counseling partnerships and an awards program are now in the works. Crystella was born in Mexico City and grew up in Central and South America. She and her family moved from Mexico to Texas in 2000 and settled in Allen in 2001. "Allen has become our home, and it has been an absolute pleasure to watch a small city change so much. I used to drive by cornfields every single day, and that is no longer the case." Crystella currently serves on the City of Allen Convention & Visitor Bureau. The Board works with other city boards and community leaders to find synergy, solutions and ways to collaborate for the good of all residents and visitors.

McKinney Repertory Theatre CELEBRATING THE BEAUTY OF THE ARTS

McKinney Repertory Theatre (MRT) is a special place. They stage five performances a year in the McKinney Performing Arts Center, located in the Historic Collin County Courthouse on the Square in downtown McKinney. The venue is filled with charm and nostalgia. Dale Gutt, MRT Board of Directors President, excitedly points out that the original judge’s bench is still behind the stage. “The venue is historic, but active,” he explains. Community theater is unique because it incorporates all the arts through set and costume design, musical elements, and more. “It provides a unique opportunity to

connote and create,” says Gutt, who’s also an actor in the shows. MRT’s passionate volunteers are gearing up to celebrate 20 seasons of shows and are working on a lineup of exciting plays to commemorate the occasion. “We also want to highlight all of the incredible talent here in the area,” says Davina Gazo Stampfel, Executive Director of MRT. “We’re putting out an RFP for a local artist to design the posters for our 20th anniversary season.” There’s no denying the sheer joy of watching a live show. Viewers escape from the stresses of everyday life and are transported to another world. There are few

Theater is about far more than staging plays. It’s an opportunity for performers of any age, skill, and background to share their talents and create something wonderful. “If you're interested in participating in community theater in any way – from ushering to costuming — we welcome you,” says Marilyn Latham, MRT Board Vice President. Community theater is a reminder of what’s good and beautiful in the community, and a celebration of the creativity, diversity, and wonder of the arts. JENA BENIK, PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO JOIN THE MEDICAL FIELD? After my daughter was born, I decided to go into medicine. It was a long road that took about 10 years. I graduated from PA school in 2016, and planned on going into oncology and hospice, but they all required experience. I found a position in a wellness program that mainly treated STDs. I found my calling, so I moved into HIV and infectious disease. WHAT IS IT LIKE WORKING WITH PATIENTS DIAGNOSED WITH HIV? My patients very often, especially when newly diagnosed, say it’s the worst day of their life. I assure them they'll be okay. HIV is a chronic disease now. I reassure them that they're going to take their meds every day, take good care of themselves, and be able to have everything else in the world that they want. WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB? I love my relationships with my patients, but it’s more than that. I take them from being naive and scared to where they can be successful, healthy, and have a future. You would think that HIV is the biggest part, but they often come with many other troubles: mental illness, trauma, and housing instability. Most don’t have insurance. They live below the poverty line. They have so many other things to overcome, and I understand why they would want to give up, but I help them regain the confidence to tackle the world and make it a better place. Wanderlust is planted deep within my soul. I can’t even begin to describe the burning desire within me to go to ALL the places. The world is so grand, and the list of amazing places to explore is endless! While I’m not quite sure where this desire to travel and explore came from, I do know that once I began to see different parts of the world, I was filled with a longing to explore more and more of what it has to offer. There is just something about seeing beautiful new places, taking in the culture, meeting new friends across the country and world, and experiencing different cuisines that fills me with joy. Whether it’s a weekend getaway with my girlfriends, a beach or lake vacay with the family, a special trip with my daughter, or traveling overseas, I am in! The funny part about my travels is that I rarely plan my own trips. My friends plan them and invite me to come along. I, of course, say yes without question! CONTINUED >

I’m thankful to say that I have passed along my passion for travel to my teenage daughter. I enjoy watching her eyes light up when we visit new places, and I revel in seeing her take it all in. Some of her favorite trips have been New York at Christmas, Exuma, the Bahamas, and Hawaii. She wants to go to Paris or on a cruise next. While I know my daughter’s favorites, I’m not sure I can choose my own. Every destination has something unique to offer and touches my soul differently. I am definitely a lover of the beach. Exuma and Turks and Caicos take the lead for the best beaches I’ve visited so far, but I am always open to suggestions. I really enjoy being by water in general, but there’s something about the sunlight hitting my face, the sound of the waves, and the beautiful views and peace of beaches. Beaches relax and calm me completely. As far as overseas travel goes, I visited Italy and Greece with a good friend last fall. It was her bucket list trip, and I’m so glad she invited me along. Greece was definitely one of my favorite places. I think everyone needs to go. I went on a girls trip to Ireland and had a blast, a mission trip to Africa over 10 years ago, and celebrated my 30th birthday with my best friend in Spain — we were born on the same day! After our Spain adventure, we planned to go on a trip overseas every year for our birthdays. However, the next year we planned a

trip to Tokyo and a typhoon hit right when our trip was scheduled. Then COVID happened and, well, we just need to get back on track for 2023. I am really hoping for Australia and New Zealand this year. I want to visit all 50 states and seven continents before I turn 40. I have 28 states and three continents to go in order to reach my goal in the next five and a half years. In another life – or maybe this life – I would love to be a travel vlogger. Travel teaches us about humanity and gives us an appreciation, understanding and respect for different points of views and ways of life. It enriches our minds and educates us far beyond any textbook or travel guide. It takes us out of our comfort zones and inspires us to see, taste and try new things. It constantly challenges us. It teaches us not only to adapt to and explore new surroundings, but also to engage with different people, to embrace adventures as they come, and to share new and meaningful experiences with friends and loved ones. I encourage you to get out and explore the world. Be spontaneous and seek experiences! Whether it be on a soul searching journey, a celebratory trip for a milestone birthday, a family vacation or whatever reason you have, don’t wait. If you don’t have a reason, make one! Saving with Solar CATHERINE BRENNEMAN DISPELS MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT SOLAR SHINGLES

As concerns about rising energy costs continue to mount, more and more homeowners are turning to roofing and solar companies for solutions. One such company making waves in the community is ProNail Roofing and Solar, led by Catherine Brenneman. ProNail Roofing and Solar is reenergizing a once predominantly male industry by building a company culture with diversity at its core.

“This industry has been very male-dominated since its inception. Yet most people having to stay home and deal with issues at the house are female," Brenneman said. “And there wasn't somebody with their perspective to serve them.” As recently as 2019, installing solar panels was not economical because the cost of electricity was cheaper. “Since then, the cost of utilities has increased by almost 120%, making solar panels a more cost-effective solution for homeowners,” Brenneman said. The state’s population explosion and the addition of businesses have placed a strain on the electricity grid. Combined with the rising cost of utilities, it has created the perfect storm. “Solar allows the customer and homeowner to have a different way to generate the electricity they use in their home,” Brenneman said. “It's like putting a Tesla on top of your roof.” ProNail Roofing and Solar is helping homeowners take control of their electricity bills, and Brenneman is working hard to help dispel misinformation homeowners encounter surrounding solar tax credits. “My first recommendation is to talk to your CPA,” Brenneman said. “Every dollar you spend on solar can be exchanged for a tax credit towards what you owe the IRS —up to 30%. If you have a system you paid $30,000 for, you will receive a $9,000 tax credit.” The company aims to provide professionalism and respect to its customers that they may not have yet experienced with other contractors. “I think one of the biggest issues in the solar industry is the same issue I faced in the roofing industry 15 years ago, and that is there are not a lot of companies that are focused on the consumer,” Brenneman said. “Many companies are focused on how many of these systems they can sell. They want to know your credit score before they will even talk to you. They’re wondering what your buying power is so they can max it out. We just don't believe in that model. Our model is, what is your lifestyle? What do you want to accomplish?”

STUDENT OF THE MONTH ARTICLE BY ALISA HAUSER PHOTOGRAPHY BY ZOE MARTIN Ally Wright isn’t your typical athlete. In fact, she’s not typical at all. Like many seniors at Allen High School, Ally is a stellar athlete heading to college on a sports scholarship. But you won’t find her on the volleyball court or the softball field. She leaves it all on the lanes. The bowling lanes. The Allen High School bowling team has earned their place in district, regional, and state level competitions thanks in part to Ally’s love and dedication to the sport. She first started bowling with her grandparents for family fun during summer vacations. When she had to decide on a sport in high school, she remembered how fun bowling was and chose it. Before joining the AHS bowling team, she averaged around 110 per game. “Coach Cory Barber has been influential in seeing the potential in my game. He said if I was aiming for a college scholarship I would have to work for it. Challenge accepted!” Through dedication and practicing with intention, her game has improved so much she’s received three offers to play in college. A master of time management, when Ally’s not picking up a spare, she’s working at her part-time job, studying to maintain her impressive GPA, or organizing meetings and events for the DOLLS Club (Daughters of Our Living Lord and Savior). How does she do it all? “I don’t watch TV,” she says with a shy grin. Ally has a twin brother and an older sister who is very responsible. “Having that standard as an example was helpful.” Ally has mastered the art of life-balance and has the wisdom to discern what’s most important. “Life is so much bigger than today,” she says. “The lessons I’ve learned from family and through mentors and friends have prepared me to make an impact in college.”
