I don’t know about you, but this time of year I am always torn. I find myself torn between resisting the commercialization of another greeting card holiday and indulging in all the sweet excuses to enjoy the season. To do a Valentine’s Day date out or enjoy a cozy night at home? To buy a card or just say a kind word? I usually land somewhere a little in between. We’ll each arrive at different answers based on our preferences and personalities, but what we all have in common is an opportunity to make sure those around us know we love them. And regardless of how you choose to mark the occasion, we hope the pages of this month’s issue will help you do just that as we celebrate and highlight all of the loveable aspects of our local community. “Love Local” is about showing love to your local businesses and those in your community, but it also means loving those who are near. Those under your own roof included. So grab a latte at Armor Coffee and head home for a game night around the fire with the family. Or snag a bottle of wine from Crú and some cheese from Market Street and enjoy an indulgent movie night at home. I love strolling through Watters Creek and finding the hidden gems within our city. I love meeting new people and listening to their stories. I love a good happy hour on a patio with friends. I love spending time with my family at the Allen Event Center or Celebration Park. I love being a part of this community. The February issue highlights some of the treasures we love most about Allen. Unique boutiques, incredible event spaces, engaging entertainment, and the people and organizations who are the heart of our community. Our hope is that we inspire you to love Allen just a bit more than you did before. Happy February!

I have lived my life by this motto since COVID struck us in early 2020. In January of 2021, I decided to return to school. I earned an undergraduate degree in Psychology from the University of Arizona Global Campus where I graduated top of my class. The family hadn’t seen each other in so long because everyone was spread apart,” Accasia said. “I cried that day during the event because it was exactly why I opened this place. I told them: 'Y'all are making my purpose come true.'" One of the highlights of Accasia’s Event Venue is its versatility. The venue can be easily transformed to fit any theme or style, whether you want a sleek and modern look for work or a more traditional and romantic atmosphere for a wedding. Accasia has a background in corporate planning, and she sharpened her skills in one of the most prominent locations for weddings. “When I was in HR, I hosted holiday parties and appreciation dinners. Then I landed a job in the Dominican Republic with Occidental Hotels. My office was in the city hotel of Santo Domingo, El Embajador,” Accasia stated. “That is the mecca for weddings. I learned tons there with the banquet team because, of course, I loved the event planning. I would do my job and then head to the hotel side and help. They were always very welcoming and accepting of help. That intensified my passion.”

ARTICLE BY ANGI BURNS PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED Shahmeen Khan’s passion is in public service. Active in her community, Shahmeen takes the time to give back to her city. Over the years, Shahmeen has served as the chair of the City of Allen Library Board, been a Board member of the Allen Library’s Endowment Fund, and served on the Board of Trustees for the Allen Parks Foundation. Shahmeen is a current Board member of the Community Development Corporation and is also an active member of Allen Kiwanis Club. She believes in treating everyone with compassion, regardless of their views and opinions. In 2017, she co-founded Collin County Diversity Council, a nonprofit that aims to increase awareness and understanding in our community. The nonprofit believes that learning about cultural differences can bring people closer together. Shahmeen is also currently part of the Diversity Equity and Inclusion Task Force for the Allen Fairview Chamber of Commerce. During her 18 year career in the financial services industry, she learned the value of genuine dedication to people and the importance of earning their trust. Shahmeen is a Financial Paraplanner at Meridian Wealth Management. She graduated from the State University of New York at Albany with a degree in economics and business administration. Shahmeen and her husband, Sheelpi, a CPA for Yum China Holdings, have been residents of Allen since 2013. When she’s not working or playing with her ten-year-old son Arman and three-year-old daughter Ilan, she loves to practice yoga.

Allen Contemporary Theatre is a Hidden Treasure Trove of Talent

Allen Contemporary Theatre has undergone several changes since its inception, including moving to a 102seat house theater and increasing the number of shows it puts on each year. “Back in 2010, our first president arrived in Allen, Texas, and much to her chagrin, found that there was no community theater,” said Joe Barr, President of Allen Contemporary Theatre. “But with a little bit of hope and a little bit of prayer and a little bit of donations, our first president, Gena Graham, actually initiated Allen Contemporary Theatre with her husband, Lamar Graham.” This year’s lineup includes "The Gods of Comedy," directed by Robyn Mead, which will run from January 27 to February 12. “Allen Theatre is top quality that matches anything in the metroplex," Director Robyn Mead said. “My current show by Ken Ludwig is about an academic who travels to Greece and is given an amulet. Upon her return, she has a surprise encounter with the ancient gods.” Mead is most excited about tackling the challenge of transitioning between multiple locations on stage without a true curtain to close between acts.

"We had to come up with some inventive way to change scenes,” Mead said. “The scenes change from Greece to a college campus to the office in the classics department to outside at the campus.” "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time," directed by Chris Berthelot, opens on March 17 and runs through April 2. “The play is based on the best-selling book by Mark Haddon that explores themes of family, bravery, and standing out,” said Berthelot. “It tells the story of a 15-year-old autistic boy attempting to solve the murder of his neighbor's dog, which leads him on a journey of self-discovery. To fully immerse the audience in the lead character's experience, the director plans to use dynamic lighting and projection, as well as intense sound design. "My goal is to have the audience in some way relate to the lead character's panic attacks and experience what he's experiencing," Berthelot said. Not only does Allen Contemporary Theatre have a fantastic 2023 lineup, but it will also continue expanding its education program to include acting classes for adults, teens, and children.

Did you make a New Year's resolution to live more generously? Wonderful! Did you donate to your local charity to help neighbors in need? Amazing! Now, close your eyes and picture the person who will be benefitting from your benevolence. Guess what? It’s probably not who you have in mind. “It could be a single parent struggling to make ends meet, a family where one or both wage earners lost a job, or a senior citizen on fixed income supporting a family and fighting rising inflation,” says All Community Outreach CEO, Marjorie Vaneskahian Burr. “We see every face, every color, every type of car.” All Community Outreach (ACO), formerly known as Allen Community Outreach, was founded by a group of caring community members in 1985. As the community grew, ACO changed its name to reflect its growing mission: to help neighbors stave off hunger and homelessness while they work toward financial stability. In 2022, ACO provided 1,539,000 meals to Collin County residents as well as over $200,000 in rent and mortgage assistance. That’s a pretty big impact. “What I’m most proud of is our work through ACO Cares,” says Burr. “We’re committed to helping people reinvent themselves. They come in for food and walk out ready for a life change.” ACO Cares’ employment center provides education and employment services including GED classes, college assistance, financial literacy, and career counseling. ACO has a Gold Seal of Transparency as well as a four-star designation from Charity Navigator as a charity that meets and exceeds best practices and industry standards. “ACO does an excellent job of shepherding funds to the place where it can have the most impact. It’s one of the many reasons why I work here,” says former volunteer turned Marketing Director, Scott Hildebrand. Do you need support but are hesitant to ask? First Responder of the Month ALLEN CITIZENS POLICE ACADEMY STRENGTHENS COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIPS Allen Citizens Police Academy is a free 10-week course offered to residents of Allen twice a year. The course, led by the Allen Police Relations Unit, is designed to foster strong relationships between the Allen Police Department and the community. When Crystella McIvor first signed up, she expected to spend her evenings sitting in a classroom listening to lectures, but was pleasantly surprised to discover that the course is hands-on, interactive, and engaging. Throughout the course, Crystella and her classmates learned more about their rights as citizens, law enforcement, and the intense and extensive training required of the officers who serve our community. As Crystella puts it, “Everything our law enforcement officers do is in accordance with and predicated on local, state, and national laws. They uphold our laws with honor and dignity!”

Saad Hamid, another recent graduate, said of the course, "It is a great example of the department's commitment to transparency, accountability, and community engagement, and it is a testament to their dedication to serving and protecting the citizens of Allen." Participants learn about Allen’s SWAT Team, K-9 Unit, CPR, and more. They also have the opportunity to ride along with on-duty officers responding to 911 calls. Crystella notes, “There was so much that I and the other attendees didn’t know. They work hard to provide a warm environment for their staff and patients. “We are a family, and I think people get that when they visit. We have been doing business long enough that we have things well-oiled and working smoothly,” said Dr. Brad Wyatt.

"We pray in the morning before we break from huddle. We've got a board where we write prayer requests from patients, and they know that we're thinking about them and praying for them." Dr. Brad started in the dental field after joining the Air Force and was trained as a dental lab tech. He later attended dental school at Oregon Health Science University in Portland and owned a practice in Phoenix for eight years before moving to Allen and joining the practice started by Dr. Boone in 1967. Dr. Boone was the first dentist in Allen and ran the practice for several decades before passing it on to Dr. Jeff Williams in the nineties. Dr. Williams previously worked as an architect before attending dental school at Baylor University. He ran the practice with his brother Steve Williams until Dr. Brad joined in 2011. Steve's son, Josh Williams, joined the practice about three and a half years ago, and his classmate, Max Cook, joined not long after. With Dr. Brad, Dr. Josh, and Dr. Max at the helm, Allen Dental Center is set to expand its facility by adding more square footage and additional rooms. The new treatment rooms will be used by the doctors and will free up existing rooms to accommodate more hygiene as the practice grows. The expansion will allow the practice to serve more patients and incorporate new technology to improve patient care. One recent addition to the practice is an iTero scanner, which allows for 3D mapping of patients' teeth and gums without the need for traditional impressions. This technology can be used for various purposes, such as creating Invisalign aligners, night guards, crowns, and orthodontic appliances. “Patients generally appreciate the scanner because it eliminates the need for impressions, which can be uncomfortable for those with a strong gag reflex or sensitivity to the materials used,” Dr. Brad said. In addition to the iTero scanner, the practice also has a 3D cone beam X-ray machine, and plans to upgrade to a higher-detail version in the new building.

This machine allows for detailed 3D imaging of a patient's head, allowing dentists to get a more comprehensive view of the patient's teeth, gums, and other structures. The 3D cone beam X-ray can be particularly helpful in identifying the cause of pain or swelling and planning treatment. Overall, the expansion and incorporation of new technology at the dental practice aims to improve patient care and make the experience more comfortable for patients. By adding additional rooms and incorporating state-of-the-art technology, the practice can serve more patients and offer a broader range of services. At Allen Dental Center, staying up-to-date with the latest technological advancements and working together as a team is a priority. Dr. Brad, Dr. Josh, and Dr. Max collaborate to provide patients with multiple options for dental care and allow them to choose the provider they feel most comfortable with. This approach helps create a positive experience for patients, particularly during emergencies when patients need urgent treatment. Additionally, Allen Dental Center is committed to standing behind their word. If they provide treatment that doesn't work as planned, they'll work diligently to find a solution that does, and often credit the cost of the original treatment towards the new solution. WHAT IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST HIGHLIGHTS OF THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION? “Our grant program! Our very first year we funded seven grants for $7,000. This year we funded 126 grants for a total of $249,255! Think of all the teachers and students who are benefitting from these grants!”

WHAT IS A FAVORITE GRANT STORY? “I love the grants that allow us to bring unique experiences to students such as the time we went to the Dallas Opera – most students had never seen anything like it and their reactions were priceless. Or when we brought a fabulous storyteller to an elementary school; she had everyone laughing so hard we cried! I also like the grants that provide resources to help struggling students. We had a math grant at a middle school that provided an online tool to help students understand algebra concepts in new ways. Student success went through the roof!”

WHAT IS A FAVORITE SCHOLARSHIP STORY? “We had a student whose family struggled with homelessness and faced many challenges. This young man helped take care of his younger siblings while going to school; eventually, they got

into the Samaritan Inn and got back on their feet. He continued to work to help the family while successfully completing high school. On top of all that, he volunteered at the Samaritan Inn, helping other students who had struggled as he had. It was a remarkable story, and we were happy to award him a scholarship.”

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE INITIATIVES THE FOUNDATION WILL BE WORKING ON IN 2023? “We are excited to continue to support the Allen ISD Mentor Teacher program. For years, our experienced teachers have been assigned a new teacher to support through their first year. They are an amazing resource for these new educators, but previously received no compensation for the additional time and work. Now they receive a stipend funded by the foundation. I can’t believe how fortunate I am to work here every day!”

Zoe Grall – Willow Springs Middle School STUDENT OF THE MONTH ARTICLE BY ALISA HAUSER PHOTOGRAPHY BY CATINA HALL Zoe Payton Grall’s name means “Life Warrior” and never was there a name more fitting for a child. Zoe was born with spina bifida and will be in a wheelchair her entire life, but that doesn’t hold her back. For a time, Zoe participated in horseback physical therapy. For five years, the family famously hosted a wildly successful lemonade stand to raise funds for her tuition. With the support of a generous community, the family was able to fund Zoe’s tuition and sponsor two other students as well. Then COVID hit. The horse therapy program closed, and the lemonade stand has been put on hold, but one thing hasn’t changed: Zoe knows how to “Squeeze the Day.” For some, hardships have a way of filling them with hope instead of despair. The Grall family is one of the fortunate few. Their home is filled with optimism and laughter. And Zoe, with her smiles and her stories, simply lights up the room. She’s in 7th grade at Willow Springs Middle School, and these days she loves hanging out with her therapy dog, Zelda. Her dad says, “She’s all of our therapy dog. She levels our family out and has a keen awareness of ‘this is who needs me right now.’ She’s a Ferrari of a dog and I still can’t believe they gave us the keys.” In addition to hanging out with Zelda, Zoe is active in choir and theater. This past fall she played an Oompa Loompa in her school’s production of Willy Wonka, Jr. Her eyes light up when she describes how she had to rescue Octavius by the shorts from the chocolate river. She also participates in her school’s Pokemon club. At the mention of Pokemon, she and her little brother, Lincoln, dart to their rooms to grab their cards. They excitedly talk over and around each other as they share their favorites. (Zoe’s is Jigglypuff.)
