LIFESTYLE LETTER
Giving Thanks!
November 2023 PUBLISHER
Angi Burns | angi.burns@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
Katelyn Reed | katelyn.reed@citylifestyle.com
In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is spending time with those that you love, and it encourages giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition and slaying goals can be healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride and appreciating those around us that have helped us along in our journey, can leave us missing out on what truly matters. We’ll never be content if we look outside ourselves and at our possessions or titles to determine if we are fulfilled. True contentment comes from within and from fulfilling who we were made to be. As always, I want to extend a heartfelt "thank you" to my family for supporting me and my journey. My husband, Gary, and our children, Ash, Averly and Jaxx, are truly the biggest blessings in my life. They are my purpose, passion and proudest achievement. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness and giving back to our community. We are thankful for the residents and businesses in our community who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our city the vibrant community that it is. We are especially thankful for our advertising partners who help bring this magazine to your doorsteps each month. They empower our vision and purpose of bringing inspiring stories and the good news of the community directly to you. This holiday season as we prepare to gather with our loved ones, and in the true spirit of Thanksgiving, let’s set time aside to consider what truly makes life meaningful and stop to reflect on those blessings. Lastly, our November issue debuts our Holiday Gift Guide. This is a new section in the publication designed to assist you with your holiday shopping. Our goal is to create a simple and efficient way for you to find the perfect gifts for your loved ones. With the direct buy option using the built in QR codes, you can secure the product or service right from your phone while reading the publication. We have curated a unique compilation of gifts for you to enjoy! We hope this addition helps lessen the stress of the holidays for our readers. We will include a Holiday Gift Guide in our November, December, May and June issues.

ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES
Whether you’re hosting Thanksgiving or an autumn dinner party, setting a festive table creates the perfect cozy atmosphere. Improvise and use what you have around the house for adding elements to the table. Candlesticks, vases, little pumpkins and gourds, or fall decor you have on hand can make a great centerpiece. Add fresh flowers or dried foliage for that extra layer of texture and color.
The Traditional Table For this classic, traditional look, a plaid throw blanket stands in for a tablecloth to establish a festive base layer. Brass candlesticks with brown taper candles create a simple and elegant centerpiece. Use familiar accents such as amber jars filled with dried grass foliage and brass pheasants to adorn the table. To add a little character to the table, use a recycled wine bottle as a vase. The simple place setting is enhanced with a dried grass accent and brown silk ribbon tied into a bow to add a special touch to your traditional display.
The Fall Garden Party Table Are you planning to dine al fresco this fall? Create an earthy, fall garden party on the porch by using natural, organic elements, greenery and flowers. To make a statement, create a floral chandelier by hanging flowers upside down above the table using fishing wire (if your space allows). The centerpiece that runs down the length of this table consists of fresh eucalyptus with gold candlesticks and a ceramic pumpkin vase filled with flowers placed on top a tree trunk charger. Adding small pumpkins and fresh flowers along the center gives a little extra character. Instead of going with the classic white plate, enjoy a pop of color at your outdoor fall garden party with a blue place setting as a nod to the sky.
The French Country Table Rustic yet elegant, this tablescape combines the love of traditional, vintage and natural elements with an updated twist. The Spode Woodland Collection transferware designs are rooted in proper hunting tradition. The fawn table runner mimicking deer spots brings an earthy, yet elevated foundation as the base for this table setting. Coordinating fawn napkins wrapped with twine and topped with natural feathers creates a whimsical touch. The stunning centerpiece starts with a vintage silver water pitcher that is then filled with fresh, sweet arrowwood Viburnums leaves. To complete the look, pair crystal glasses with vintage crystal stemware. NOVEMB ER 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / A L L E N T X

MARINE COR PS LEAGUE ARTICLE BY ALISA HAUSER
Building Camaraderie and Serving The Community The Marine Corps League, a sanctuary for dedicated Marines and FMF Corpsmen who have proudly worn or currently wear the revered eagle, globe and anchor, is a place where the cherished camaraderie of their service days comes to life once more. Nathan Hanson, a past detachment commandant and paymaster, reflects on the League’s profound impact: “Many members have shared their struggles with mental health, and connecting with fellow veterans who share similar experiences has been a lifeline for them.” In the vast landscape of veteran support, countless heroes are in need but are unsure of how to access resources. As a local veteran organization, the Marine Corps League acts as a vital bridge, connecting veterans with organizations eager to help. Hanson recounts one of their success stories: “We once learned of a Marine and his 3-year-old daughter who were living in a shelter. We were able to intervene, securing them a home, aiding in job placement, fixing their car, and helping them regain their independence.” The Marine Corps League offers a lifeline to veterans when they need it most.

248TH MARINE CORPS BIRTHDAY BALL Traditionally reserved for Marines, their companions, and esteemed guests, the Marine Corps Birthday Ball is a cherished celebration of military heritage and history. For the seventh consecutive year, the Collin County Marine Corps League extends a warm invitation to the community to partake in this unforgettable event. In honoring this time-honored tradition, Marines historically have come together on or around November 10th to share a birthday cake, whether in times of battle or peace. Attendees at this year’s celebration can anticipate a cocktail hour, commemorative mementos, a ceremony conducted by Marines, a sumptuous dinner, music, dancing and an opportunity to support local veterans, scholarships and the Toys for Tots program. Mark your calendar for November 18th, when the League hosts the Marine Corps Birthday Ball. This event welcomes veterans and the public alike, and tickets are available for purchase at CollinMCL.org. COLLI N COU NT Y TOYS FOR TOTS Every holiday season, a heartwarming tradition takes root across the United States, delivering smiles and hope to countless children in need through Toys for Tots. In Collin County, this noble initiative is spearheaded by the LCpl Jacob D. Hayes Detachment of the Marine Corps League. Collin County is renowned for its generosity, particularly when it comes to children. Toys for Tots represents more than just toys: it symbolizes a beacon of hope for families grappling with financial hardships, offering a glimpse of the holiday magic every child deserves. The program collects new, unwrapped toys and ensures they find their way into the hands of children who might otherwise wake up to empty stockings on Christmas morning. To contribute, drop off a toy at a designated donation site or donate online from now until the start of December. For more information, visit CollinCo-TX.ToysForTots.org.

The Unique Friends Foundation Nonprofit of the Month ARTICLE BY ANDREA PATRICK
What started as one mother’s desire to give her daughter opportunities to thrive in society despite her disabilities became the crusade of a woman determined to pull back the curtain on and be the voice for a community of individuals desperate to participate in the workforce. The Unique Friends Foundation (TUFF) was formed in 2016. It's an organization focused on encouraging and empowering individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to compete for their place in society. TUFF does this by connecting and coaching. We first connect and build relationships with our Unique Friends to understand their desires. Next, we

offer soft skills and employment training and coaching to help manage their employment expectations. In addition to working with the intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) community, we also strive to expose local community residents to the challenges of our Unique Friends. Through webinars and meetups, we share ways to become better champions and advocates. Lastly, we educate employers about the untapped potential of our Unique Friends. Our vision is to start a movement to conquer the prejudices that plague the intellectually and developmentally disabled community, and we hope to start conversations that encourage the acceptance and empowerment of these individuals on a global level.
Since 2016, we have championed our clients. We’ve done so through community events and helping local church ministries. We’ve worked closely with local day habilitation programs and provided opportunities for our Unique Friends to showcase their skills with local business owners via our Quality Control Team. We are currently working on an initiative that would serve as a resource for parents and caregivers of children and adults with special needs. If you would like to support our mission and vision, your donations are welcome at www.paypal.me/tuffnonprofit.

Do You Have an Estate Plan? Life can be uncertain. We all need to appoint trusted people to handle our affairs in case we are unable to do so. Also, most of us prefer to choose who will inherit our assets, and how those assets will be managed. If you fail to make an estate plan, the State of Texas makes those choices for you.
WHAT IS AN ESTATE PLAN? An estate plan is a set of documents that provides a plan in case of emergencies and death. It is more than just a will. A complete estate plan could include any of the following important documents, depending on your unique situation:
1. Will. This designates who will receive your assets when you pass, who will manage your estate, and how it will be managed. It may also designate a guardian for minor children and set up a trust to spring into being for the management of assets. 2. Living Trust. This is a legal document that creates a trust to hold and manage your assets both while you are living and beyond. Many people want a trust to avoid probate, but there are simpler and more inexpensive ways to accomplish this. However, if you have property in another state, want anonymity, or have a very large estate, it may be appropriate.

L EGA L C OM PASS | FINANCE + LE GAL S E RVI CE S
3. Financial Power of Attorney. This designates a trusted person to handle your financial affairs when you are alive but unable to handle them for any reason, such as sickness. 4. Medical Power of Attorney and HIPAA Release. This allows a trusted person or persons to make medical decisions for you when you are unable to make them, such as being unconscious. The HIPPA Release allows your agent to obtain medical records and talk to medical professionals on your behalf. 5. Survivorship Agreement or Revocable Transfer on Death Deed (TODD). These are revocable deeds that allow you to designate the surviving spouse and/or beneficiaries of real property. This transfers title to real property without the need to probate the estate. These may be the most overlooked, but very important tools in estate planning. 6. Appointment for Disposition of Remains. This allows you to appoint a person to handle the burial or cremation arrangements after your death. 7. Declaration of Guardian. This allows you to choose a guardian for yourself if you should need one. Otherwise, the court may decide and choose someone other than who you would have chosen. 8. Directive to Physician (“Living Will”). This is used in the hospital and allows you to choose whether you would like life-sustaining treatments or treatments to keep you comfortable if you are diagnosed with a terminal or irreversible condition. 9. Out of Hospital DNR (Do Not Resuscitate). For the very elderly or terminally ill, this document is used outside a hospital (in a home or nursing home) and directs EMS or other medical providers not to resuscitate. 10. Advice on designating beneficiaries or business succession planning to avoid probate. An overlooked but important part of setting up an estate plan is designating beneficiaries on all non-probate assets. An attorney can help by guiding the client
through the process and reviewing the beneficiary designations to make sure primary and alternative beneficiaries are properly designated on life insurance, bank accounts, investment accounts, retirement accounts, and pension funds. Also, an attorney can draft or review company agreements to make sure the company has successors in interest.
SPECIAL ISSUES: 1. Blended Families. Without a will, a TODD, or a Survivorship Agreement filed in the property records, children outside the current marriage receive all of their deceased parent’s share of community property, including the community property residence, and the current spouse receives nothing except the right to live in the residence. Estate planning is a must for blended families. 2. Single Adults. Single adults may not wish to leave their estate half to their parents and half to their siblings, which is what the State of Texas has chosen for them in the absence of a valid will. 3. College Students. Once a child turns 18, parents are no longer able to talk to financial institutions or medical facilities on behalf of their child unless the child so designates in a financial or medical power of attorney. 4. Elderly. Elderly people often need assistance with their financial and medical affairs. This can protect them from exploitation. Having a will saves loved ones from having to untangle a mess of asset transfers. This is especially important to do before the loss of mental capacity when it is too late. 5. Charitable Giving. An estate plan can direct charitable giving.
Most of us prefer to choose who will inherit our assets, and how those assets will be managed. If you fail to make an estate plan, the State of Texas makes those choices for you.

KEEPING UP WITH CHANGING PROFESSIONAL NORMS The Right Résumé is Everything
Upskilling? In today’s world of constantly changing work trends, it’s imperative to stay ahead of the curve. Since COVID-19, highly skilled employees are increasingly demanding flexibility, and employers are listening. If you’re seeking employment within a hybrid or full work from home model, then your job search process will look a little different than another person who is looking within the traditional “9-5” arena. Employers are tuned into these nuances. But first, you must catch their attention. It starts with an appropriate résumé that’s laser targeted to your niche, to your work from home (or not) preferences, and to your skill sets. The résumé is an important part of the process, and yet 75% of résumés aren’t even seen by an employer – whether you’re a college student looking for your first job, or an executive that’s changing course mid-way through your career. Making yourself stand out from the crowd is vital. How? The bottom line is that your story is unique and should be captured — and then reflected to your potential employer. However, this is easier said than done.
DITCH THE STRUGGLE But beyond résumé writing, for many job seekers, the issue is that their approach is simply outdated. This includes branding, strategy, marketing, cover letters, content for LinkedIn and other social media profiles, interview practice, and so on. And the story doesn’t end there. Once you land the job of your dreams, there are other kinds of skills that many of us aren’t taught in college, such as salary negotiation or transitioning/ upleveling into a different department at work. While there is a ton of self-help advice on these topics on the internet, it can be hard to separate the fluff from what’s authentic. Upskilling in real time, in the real world, can be confusing and frustrating. These are the kinds of issues that iRock Résumés often witnesses in job seekers. iRock Résumés was launched in May 2014 and is led by Nickquolette Barrett, who, after spending 20 years in the corporate world, branched out into creating her own virtual business. One thing she recognizes is that you can’t fit a square peg into a round hole, and that having a strategy is crucial to make sure the person fits the opportunity. “Pumping out templated résumés just doesn’t work anymore,” she says. GET THE RIGHT SUPPORT Strategy is often a key differentiator between success and failure. What many people do is cast a wide net, applying anywhere and everywhere, instead of evaluating their strengths and honing in on where they will bloom the best. This requires time, resources and energy — and can often lead to burnout, another contemporary issue that job seekers are grappling with. Aligning the best “in you” with the best opportunity “out there” can sometimes require a little hand holding. Maybe it means tweaking your résumé multiple times or practicing eye to eye contact during an interview. “It’s necessary to service the whole person, and recognize their capacities, not the latest trends,” Nickquolette says. Her passion truly resides in giving people confidence in their career journey. Together with her husband, Reverend Dr. Irvin L. Barrett, you can also find her on the front lines of “The Place of Peace,” the Shalom Community Fellowship Church, right here in Allen, Texas.

Make Memories Together this Christmas at Gaylord Texan PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
46
M UST SE E | TR AVEL
Perry Como may have crooned, “(There’s No Place Like) Home for the Holidays,” but a trip to Gaylord Texan Resort – with its festive decor, seasonal dining, and original holiday experiences — may be even better than staying home. This year, let someone else do the cooking and cleaning. Gather the family, pack your bags, and head out of town for a Christmastime vacation everyone will enjoy.
CLOSE TO HOME, BUT WORLDS APART Standing on the shores of the majestic Lake Grapevine, Gaylord Texan is a perfect choice for families looking for a fun holiday getaway close to home. From November 10 through December 31, 2023, the resort transforms into a wondrous holiday haven with acres of décor, live entertainment, and immersive activities for all ages. And while Gaylord Texan itself can’t be wrapped and placed under the tree – with 152 suites and nearly 2,000 guest rooms it would be a tight fit – event and attraction tickets make great stocking stuffers. The gift of an overnight stay would certainly spread Christmas cheer!
ICE! FEATURING DR. SEUSS’ “HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS!” The coolest attraction of all is ICE! featuring Dr. Seuss’ “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” This holiday spectacle, kept at nine degrees and hand-carved by artisans out of two million pounds of brightly colored ice, is back again this season. In this one-of-a-kind retelling of the beloved children’s book, guests will see familiar characters, including the Grinch, Max, and CindyLou Who, come to life in more than 10 scenes from the movie. See the Grinch as he steals the Who’s gifts, as he sings with the Whos down in Who-ville, as he slices roast beast and more, all carved from ice. And there’s no need to pack coats, though scarves, gloves, and extra apparel are suggested for those who tend to get cold. Even though it’s chilly inside, Gaylord Texan provides parkas to keep guests comfortable as they marvel at larger-than-life displays, take cherished photos, and wander through the one-of-a-kind, arctic attraction.
ENTERTAINMENT FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY Love a Broadway-style spectacle? An original Gaylord Hotels production, Cirque: Spirit of Christmas, features amazing acrobatics and feats of flexibility. Designed for the entire family to enjoy, the story centers around Noel, a child dismayed by the hustle and bustle of the holidays. Trying to recapture her lost love of the season, she is visited by spirits who bring back the true meaning of the season in energetic, dreamlike chapters. A heartwarming story that soars through the air and sparkles with imagination, this 45-minute show will delight and dazzle with a riveting score, world-class contortionists, jugglers, trapeze artists, and more.
FESTIVE FUN FOR ALL With signature events like ICE! and the popular Cirque: Spirit of Christmas show, classic holiday activities including photos with Santa, and thrilling experiences like snow tubing, there’s something for everyone to enjoy during So. Much. Christmas. at Gaylord Texan Resort. For the thrill seekers: • Hop on a tube and race friends down a snow-covered hill. • Put those sleuthing skills to the test in one of three festive escape rooms. • Enjoy a yuletide glide on the indoor ice-skating rink. • Build and toss real snowballs at Snowball Build & Blast. For the chill seekers: • Let your Christmas creativity run wild at the Gingerbread Decorating Corner. • Search high and low at the resort-wide The Grinch’s™ Wonderful Awful Idea Scavenger Hunt. • Take a spin on the Christmas Carousel. • At Elf Training Academy, create a keepsake craft and learn how to become one of Santa’s helpers. Many of these arctic adventures take place inside Gaylord Texan’s Christmas Village. This whimsical winter wonderland features festive attractions including Snow Flow Mountain, Snowball Build & Blast, a classic Christmas carousel, and more. Afterwards, enjoy warm beverages, delicious treats, and holiday shopping at Emporium in the Village.
WINTER WELLNESS AT RELÂCHE SPA For those looking to chill out in a different way, there’s Relâche Spa. Relax and unwind at Grapevine’s premier spa, fitness center, and indoor pool. This holiday season, drift into a state of tranquility while enjoying a massage, facial, pedicure, or another of Relâche Spa’s relaxing and rejuvenating treatments.
SO. MUCH. CHRISTMAS. After a festive day of memory making, unwind with a meal at Old Hickory Steakhouse, Riverwalk Cantina, Texas Station, or Zeppole before seeing the holidays light up the night at the #LIT Light Show. This dynamic, celebratory light show brings the fun of decorating the tree to life through thousands of dancing lights, culminating in a delightful and memorable tree lighting experience. There’s no better way to celebrate the holidays than by gathering at Gaylord Texan Resort. This season, give a gift that can’t be wrapped but will be remembered forever. Unwrap the magic of Christmas at Gaylord Texan.

Student of the Month QUINTON HAMMONDS ARTICLE BY ALISA HAUSER
In the world of sports, resilience sets the exceptional apart from the ordinary. At Allen High School, one such exceptional player is Varsity Football Receiver Quinton Hammonds. His football career has been about navigating change: playing under three new coaches in three years. “It’s been a journey!” he says. “Especially with learning a new playbook every year.” In addition to the changes, he’s overcome a string of injuries. Sophomore year, he fractured his foot mid-season and thought for sure his junior year would be his breakout season. “Then, during the fifth play of the second game of the season, I was headed for a touchdown when I felt a pop in my shin.” That put him out for six games. His first practice back, right before the big game with rival Prosper, he landed on the same area again. “I’ve never beaten Prosper and now that I’m healthy, I hope this is my year.” There are many fans in the stands cheering for Quinton — “There aren’t many people who can say they play in front of 15,000 people in high school!” — but one of his biggest fans is his mom who works with the Jersey Club supporting the team. When asked if he’d like to send her shoutout, he quickly replied with a grin: “Thanks for always making breakfast.” What’s Next for Quinton? “I for sure want to go to college and play football,” he says. “I’m being scouted by colleges and look forward to seeing how it all works out once the season is over and the offers come in.” Though he says there’s pressure to perform well on a team as high profile as the Eagles, he sees the high expectations as an opportunity to grow stronger as a player and as a person. What He’s Watching: “I’m always watching sports. Soccer, basketball, the World Series, and football, of course. My favorite team is the NY Giants.” Who He’s Following: “Larry Fitzgerald and AJ Brown. We’re similar types of players, so I follow them and watch their games.” His favorite celebrity is Drake.
