Embrace your Style!

September 2025 PUBLISHER

Rich Ringrose | rich.ringrose@citylifestyle.com E D I TO R

Richard Lakin | richard.lakin@citylifestyle.com

Style is such an extraordinary part of life—it’s far more than the clothes we wear or the accessories we choose. Style is woven into every detail of our existence, from the way we decorate our homes to the art and music we enjoy, the books we read, and even how we interact with the world around us. It’s the unique thread that creates the tapestry of who we are. What makes style so captivating is its deeply personal nature. It evolves alongside us as we explore new interests, embrace our quirks, and express what we value most. It’s a language without words, a powerful tool for connection that can bridge differences and spark shared understanding. Here in Albuquerque, we’re fortunate to have endless opportunities to celebrate and explore style. Whether it’s through visiting local boutiques, supporting creative entrepreneurs, or simply drawing inspiration from our city’s vibrant culture, there’s so much to ignite your creativity and lift your spirit. This month, I encourage you to think of style as an authentic expression of yourself. The most beautiful style is one that reflects who you truly are—your passions, your story, your individuality. And the incredible thing is that no one else in the world can replicate that. As always, thank you so much for reading.

EXPLORING OUR STATE CAPITAL

Every month, we take a look at day trips that Albuquerque residents might find interesting. With Santa Fe’s recent win as Travel and Leisure magazine’s number one travel destination, we thought it was time to feature our state capital. We asked Santa Fe Mayor Alan Webber why he thinks Travel and Leisure’s readers voted the city as their favorite destination. He told us, “We have so much to offer with so much heart and spirit, and it’s so welcoming on the part of everybody in the city. This is really an award for the entire city. You walk down the street here in Santa Fe, and you see somebody on the street corner looking at their cell phone, looking puzzled. One of our residents is going to walk up to them and say, ‘Can I help you?’ That kind of welcoming attitude is what Santa Fe offers... and it’s the hotels, restaurants, shops, museums, music, galleries, and the cultural events.” CONTINUED >

Holidays on Canyon Road

Mayor Webber continues, “In addition to being voted number one travel destination in the US, Santa Fe was also ranked in the top 25 cities to visit worldwide. No other US city was on that list. After 400 years, we think Santa Fe’s moment has finally arrived.” Founded in 1610, Santa Fe is the oldest and highest-altitude state capital in the US. Blending indigenous, Spanish, and American influences, Santa Fe is considered the cultural capital of the Southwestern United States and is widely regarded as one of the country's great art cities due to its vibrant art scene. Onetenth of all employment is related to artistic and cultural industries, with writers and authors comprising the highest proportion of the labor force of any US city. Mayor Webber said, “Creative people come here because they can be themselves and not be subjected to paparazzi. We have our fair share of people who are famous for one reason or another, whether it's their incredible storytelling skills as writers, poets, or filmmakers.” Landmarks and cultural attractions that are a must-see include: the Santa Fe Plaza, where there are regular concerts and art fairs, the Palace of the Governors that features a market for Indigenous craftspeople to display and sell their work, the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, featuring the artist’s legacy, and Meow Wolf, an immersive and surreal art exhibit. The music scene in Santa Fe is extraordinary. The Lensic Performing Arts Center is a world-class theatre that offers a diverse repertoire of music and dance, and the Santa Fe Opera is rated by some critics as second only to The Metropolitan Opera of New York. The Rail Yards also has craft displays and free live music, and can be accessed by the Rail Runner train from ABQ.

Another feature of Santa Fe is the sheer number of festivals. According to Randy Randall, Santa Fe’s Tourism Director, there are over one hundred annual cultural events in the city. He tells us, “We have the Spanish Market, the Canyon Road Walk, the International Film Festival, the Indian Market (the largest Native American crafts market in the country), the Burning of the Zozobra, the Santa Fe Jazz Festival...the list goes on and on. Really, just about any weekend there’s something going on.” He says another draw to the city is the ambience of the architecture. “How the city looks and feels with the Adobe structures... there's just no place like it. In the historic district, there's very tight controls on any exterior renovation or new construction. Santa Fe was actually one of the first cities in the United States to put in protective codes to ensure that the architecture and the ambiance didn't change.” Of course, Santa Fe is internationally recognized as a destination for foodies. Randy tells us, “Santa Fe attracts a lot of big-time chefs. We’ve got at least two James Beard Best Chefs of the Southwest who are in Santa Fe full-time. We've got numerous chefs who have been nominated for honors in the James Beard organization. The city is known for its northern New Mexican fine dining, but there’s just about every kind of ethnic cuisine here.” It's only an hour’s drive to the number one travel destination in the country. Festival details can be found at numerous places online, as well as the Rail Runner train schedule.

CLASSIC Cars and LOWRIDERS Restored classic cars, tricked-out customized vehicles, and lowriders are a part of New Mexico culture. Española, in northern New Mexico, is considered the lowrider capital of the world. A blend of Latino and old school American car culture influences, many of these cars are meticulously maintained works of art and a source of community pride. There is some contention as to whether this started in Los Angeles or here in New Mexico. The state assembly recently passed a bill that would make lowriders the official car of New Mexico. In a statement, they said that “Lowriders are as iconic to New Mexico as the Zia symbol and red and green chili.” Contrary to negative movie depictions of car culture, they are a regular presence at many local fundraising and cultural events. Gabe Trujillo of the Albuquerque car club “The Drifters” told us, “We do a lot of parades for people who are ill, and for graduations, retirements, and birthdays. During COVID, when people couldn’t gather in large groups, we staged car shows and parades. A ‘parade’ is when we roll down the street in a procession to cheer someone up or celebrate an event in people’s lives.” Gabe said, “Ten of us formed the Drifters eleven years ago. Now we have 30 members. Cars must be pre-1960 to be in the club. We are more of a classic car club than a lowrider group. Only one honorary member has a lowrider.” Lowriders have hydraulics that famously make the vehicle jump up and down. You don’t have to look hard to find classic cars and lowriders in Albuquerque. They are a ubiquitous sight in the community. To find out where the Drifters are doing a car show, check out their Facebook page. CONTINUED >

LISA BARKER’S UNIQUE FURNISHINGS TELL A BEAUTIFUL STORY

THE COLLECTIVE SANTA FE 30

M UST SE E | HO ME + DESIGN

“THE PROVENANCE IS A VERY IMPORTANT PART OF THE PIECE.” Walking into Lisa Barker’s Collective is quite an experience for the senses. She advertises elevated home furnishings which are there in abundance, but the showroom offers all kinds of highly unique, one of a kind, rather exotic items. I noticed an albino peacock, many large fossils, and a mannequin covered in wine corks and feathers. Eight feet tall ceramic wine vessels from 1700’s Spain flank the front entrance of the showroom. As Lisa admits, The Collective isn’t for everyone. There’s so much to absorb. Even our regular repeat customers spend a lot of time browsing, hunting and gathering ideas. It’s a great place to visit when you’re having a tough day and need to reboot. While leaning back in her chair and smiling, Lisa says “I think the thing that brings me the most joy is that a good many of our visitors and customers say that it is probably the most beautiful and exotic retail store that they’ve ever visited.” Lisa spends a good portion of her time traveling to procure items from all over the world. Recent adventures as she calls them, include Morocco and Spain. “I came back with antiques that I feel are worthy of being here in The Collective Showroom.” When buying Lisa speaks directly to the person that she’s buying from. Sometimes she is in an old warehouse or even out in a field and strives to obtain extensive provenance. “I hope that the back story makes the piece more interesting and I’m always glad when something that I’ve found in my travels, finds a good home and that the story behind it lives on.” One of Lisa’s bigger passions in procuring is area rugs. “It’s an untamed addiction” she states. “Our large selection comes from around the globe. I hand select each and every piece with a discerning eye and with great delight.”

“NEW THINGS COME INTO THE SHOWROOM, SOMETIMES DAILY, BUT ALWAYS AT LEAST ON A WEEKLY BASIS.”

The 15,000 Sq ft Showroom contains a large area of fabric samples so that clients can create custom upholstery pieces from a large variety of mid to very high-end manufacturers. Interior design services are offered to buyers who want a different and professionally trained eye on what they are creating in their homes. The Collective seems to have home furnishings for every taste and style, from floor to ceiling, encompassing southwestern to contemporary and everything in between. The Showroom holds these interwoven styles in a fascinating and intriguing harmony. “Many of us crave immediate gratification so we meet that need as well” Lisa states. It is a low key and embracing environment with exceptional service. White glove delivery is available to Albuquerque and up to the Northern Taos areas. Part of The Collective intrigue is the old Butler building. Located in the historic Santa Fe Railyards, the building served as the Santa Fe Railroad’s almacen. Lisa explains that almacen means gathering place. With narrow gage railroad tracks on both sides of the building, everything from pinto beans to whiskey, were on and off loaded from the building. Gross & Kelly erected the Butler building in 1934 and Lisa and her husband David Barker are honored to be its stewards.

“I CREATED THE COLLECTIVE TO BE A FAMILY. WE STRIVE FOR GOOD COMMUNICATION THAT BEGINS AT HOME AND SPREADS ACROSS THE GLOBE.” When asked what Lisa enjoys most, she gets a glint in her eye and talks with great pride about her associates. “I created The Collective to be a family. We strive for good communication that begins at home and spreads across the globe. The Collective offers free parking for their clientele, and their phone number is 505-230-7000.

LAS VENTANAS

Scott Ashcroft designs and builds New Mexico style ARTICLE BY RICHARD LAKIN PHOTOGRAPHY BY FOTOVAN

H OM E U P DAT E | HO M E + D E SIGN

“THE CLIENT IS ABSOLUTELY THE FIRST AND FOREMOST FOCUS WHEN WE MOVE

SOMEBODY INTO A HOUSE.”

Las Ventanas Homes is an Albuquerque custom home builder that designs innovative and eco-friendly houses. The company chose the name Las Ventanas, Spanish for windows, because, as owner Scott Ashcroft told us, “We live in New Mexico where we have over 300 days a year of sunshine and blue skies. You should have a home with amazing big windows, letting all that natural light in.” Scott is a fourth-generation New Mexico designer/ builder whose great-grandfather came to the area in the 1930s. Scott started Las Ventanas Homes in 2009. Scott said, “I was building some homes mostly in Los Alamos prior to that, but during the economic downturn at that time, I decided to concentrate on the Albuquerque market... really to get rid of the inventory that we accumulated during the lean times. Now we build a lot of homes in Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Los Ranchos, and Corrales. We focus more on higher end luxury custom homes. We have developed a niche in the Albuquerque area.” Las Ventanas takes the lifestyle of the customer into consideration during the design process. Scott explains, “We design the home with the client, so these do not come from stock plans. We meet with the client, and we discuss how they're going to live in the home. What do they want to do with the home? What is their family like? How do they entertain?” Scott has recently started a second part of his company that designs and builds casita guest houses. He explains, “The city of Albuquerque passed a zoning ordinance CONTINUED >

that allows for an accessory dwelling on your property, so we started Casitas by Los Santos to provide for that new market.” Las Ventanas designs and builds homes with well-thought-out out eco-friendly features. Scott says, “We only use materials in the homes that are low VOC, meaning low volatile organic compounds. We then get great indoor air quality in our homes because we're not using materials that give off gas or bad chemicals. We use very high-efficiency heating and cooling systems. We typically use a tankless water heater in the home and then also incorporate water-saving features.” Scott elaborates on design that is effective in the desert environment, “Every home we build, we use an ERV system. ERV stands for energy recovery ventilation, and what that means is we use a system that is changing the air inside the house to guarantee high-quality indoor air. It vents the dirty air out and brings fresh air in. It means your home is less dusty. People who have seasonal allergies find that their home becomes their nice little safe place because the air is so clean inside the house that it really helps minimize seasonal allergies.” All Las Ventanas builds are New Mexico Green Build Certified Homes. This means that an independent third party has inspected and certified this rating. The certification takes into account energy efficiency, healthy indoor air, reduced water usage, preservation of natural

resources, and improved durability with reduced maintenance. This rating assures lower utility bills and gives the homeowner a clear and quantitative measure of the home’s green features. Scott sums up his design/build philosophy, “It’s all about the client experience for us. We’ve built multiple homes for several clients. I think that's something that is rare for a custom home builder to be able to say, and I think the reason that that's true for us is because for us, the client is absolutely the first and foremost focus when we move somebody into a house. We are confident that they are happy with their home and happy with the process that got them into that new home.” Las Ventanas Homes is at 8330-A Washington Pl. NE. Their phone number is 505.362.6824 and their website is https://lasventanasnm.com/.

OLD WALL ,

NEW TRICKS HANG UP THE OLD WAY AND TRY A GALLERY WALL HANGING SYSTEM IN YOUR HOME.

One of my happy places is sitting in front of a museum wall gallery. I can admire art for hours, and if I’m with a friend, there’s no telling how long we’ll sit, reflect, and share our individual perspectives. If you’ve admired gallery wall displays in magazines, catalogs, or on social media and would like to create one in your home, it’s much easier than you might think.

WHY CHOOSE A GALLERY WALL HANGING SYSTEM? The beauty of a gallery wall hanging system lies in its flexibility and ease of use. Traditional picture hanging methods can leave walls full of holes, making it cumbersome to adjust placements or update the display. A hanging system, however, allows for easy adjustments without additional damage to your walls. This feature is particularly advantageous for renters or anyone who likes to refresh their decor frequently.

DESIGNING YOUR GALLERY WALL The first step in creating a gallery wall is planning. Start by selecting a theme or color scheme that complements your space. Themes can be as varied as black-and-white photographs, abstract paintings, or a mix of personal and artistic prints.

MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED: • A gallery wall hanging system, which typically includes mounting rails, cables or rods, and hooks. You can find them pretty much anywhere, online or at your local home improvement store. • A collection of frames and artwork. • A level, measuring tape, and perhaps a laser pointer for precision.

CREATIVE ARRANGEMENTS • The arrangement of your gallery wall can follow several patterns, depending on your taste: • Linear: Artworks are hung in a straight line at eye level, creating a clean and orderly appearance. • Grid: Perfect for a collection of similarly sized frames, this layout emphasizes structure and uniformity. • Salon Style: This more traditional arrangement involves layering pieces closely together, often extending across the wall. It’s ideal for creating a rich, filled look. Enjoy curating a space that is uniquely yours, evolving with your tastes and lifestyle. CONTINUED > S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . INSTALL ATION TIPS: 01 MEASURE YOUR SPACE:

Carefully measure the wall space where you want to install the gallery. Consider the height and width available, keeping in mind furniture and other room features.

02 LAY IT OUT:

Arrange your artwork on the floor to finalize your layout. This “dry run” is crucial to get a feel for how the pieces will interact with one another. I like to use painter’s tape to create a visual of what my display will look like on the walls.

03 INSTALL THE RAILS

AND HANG YOUR ART:

Following the manufacturer’s instructions, mount the rails at the top of your wall. Ensure they are level and securely attached. Attach cables or rods to the rails, then use hooks to hang your frames. The beauty of the system is that you can adjust the height and position of each piece easily.

04 BALANCE

AND SYMMETRY: Step back to view your layout from different angles. Adjust the spacing and alignment as needed to achieve visual balance.

LIVING STYLE THE INTERSECTION OF FASHION AND HOME

this unexpected love affair, fashion and interiors are more than just a simple pairing—they are rooted in culture, creativity, and the human desire for self-expression. As conscious consumers of the 21st century, participating in a retail landscape that is oversaturated and struggling to adapt to the ever-changing demands of the modern customer, our purchasing power should not only respond to a feeling of want but also prioritize items that reflect who we

are and who we aspire to be. This is clearly visible through the representation of fashion and interiors. Although we tend to consider cost-per-wear primarily when it comes to clothing, this same principle applies to furniture and the function it brings to the home. Aesthetics and functionality both play a role in this pairing, painting a picture for the rest of the world of who the wearer is and how they live in their space. makes her feel powerful in her everyday life—or the black dress that gives her a necessary boost of confidence—may naturally gravitate toward sleek, modern furniture that feels equally strong and elevates the space where the modern woman thrives. In the same way, someone who prefers an effortless ensemble—like their favorite white T-shirt and comfortable denim jeans—may also look for home pieces that are functional and make their guests feel at ease. Even a handmade rug, one that sparks conversation about where it was found and adds a focal point to a room, mirrors how we search our closets for a sweater tied to a cherished memory. Just as we carefully choose outfits to express ourselves, it’s equally important to ensure that our living spaces are designed with the same intention. More than ever, modern buyers are making purchasing decisions based on personal morals and values, forming a new wave of consumers who seek products that are both high-quality and environmentally or socially conscious, whether for themselves or their homes. The following imagery affirms that living a timeless lifestyle across all aspects of life is possible through the thoughtful styling of sustainable clothing and vintage furniture. As the modern retail landscape continues to evolve, it’s become increasingly vital to make conscious consumer choices—ones that allow us to express our truest selves through both our wardrobes and the places we call home. STEPS:

66

H OW TO | ARTS + C ULTURE

Make sure to have all of your materials gathered before starting the project for easy assembly. Take your half-circle stamping blanks, large gold bars and medium gold bars and arrange them in the order you want your earrings to flow. You can see how we arranged ours, but consider switching up the placement of each item for varying earring styles. Mark where each of the holes line up on the individual pieces. These spots are where you’ll be creating holes with the metal punch to connect each item with jump rings. Once you have your spots marked, carefully and precisely punch holes in your individual pieces. Once all of your holes are punched, connect each piece with the desired size of jump ring. For an added touch, punch extra holes in the bottom piece and finish off with knotted embroidery thread for a bohemian tassel effect.

PIECE BY PIECE

Use both your bent nose forceps and needle nose pliers to secure each end of the jump ring. Gently twist the jump ring to open the gap, and place the jump ring through the holes in the pieces you are connecting. When securely through both pieces, gently twist the jump ring in the opposite direction to close the gap and secure the pieces.
