A CABIN IN THE CITY “A cabin in the city.” That’s how Alfredo Sandoval describes his unique property in the Northeast section of Albuquerque. Built from the ground up with his own two hands, Alfredo chopped and milled all the wood to make the rental feel like a cabin throughout. When you open the front door, you first notice the beautiful stained woodwork, some of which is mixed cleverly with a turquoise proxy. In the kitchen, Alfredo leaves a note welcoming you to a complementary bottle of wine. A chalkboard above the glass kitchen table offers guests to contact Alfredo if they want to have a pizza night. back, a game room that any kid or adult would love. The included air hockey table, pool table, dart board and electric marker board are sure to entertain guests for hours to come. The bedroom is elegant and electric! The king size bed is next to a state-of-the art jacuzzi that connects to the Bluetooth system in the home. The high ceilings in the bedroom give the feel of a bigger space. Connecting to the bedroom is the main bathroom with walk in shower. The tile work is masterfully done with soap dispensers fixed to the wall. The best part about the shower is that it wraps around to the guest bathroom which features a washer and dryer. The rental has fantastic outdoor features as well! Alfredo welcomes his guests to take advantage of the pool and luxurious hot tub. Recreational Vehicles are great! Whether you are using it for family trips, retirement shenanigans, or a Spaceballs motion picture type adventure, RVs make road trips more fun. If you are contemplating buying an RV you are probably asking yourself, “Is it worth it?” It’s a valid question, and the answer largely depends on where you are at in your life. HOW A WOMAN FOUND HERSELF IN THE ARMED FORCES

“My military journey began right outside these gates,” says Melissa Gavin, a native New Mexican who has been in the Air Force for the past eighteen and a half years. “My life wasn’t going anywhere good.” Gavin was a bill collector before enlisting. “I was turning into a mean person that wasn’t me [...] I had to make a change for myself.” So to better her life, she joined the service. “I’ve always wanted to get stationed back here in New Mexico,” she says, to be close to her family. Melissa grew up in Glorietta, New Mexico, and moved to Albuquerque in 1998. Melissa began her Air Force career as a fuel operator, driving fuel trucks and refueling vehicles and airplanes. “In fuels, it’s mainly a male career field,” Melissa explains. “If you’re a woman, they’re gonna look at you and say you can’t do it. [...] I’m not just a girl. I’m a person. My dad always told me, ‘anything a boy can do, a girl can do better.’ We can do anything we need to.” Melissa’s gumption and determination proved valuable. She worked in cryogenics and eventually became a chaplain assistant (now called religious affairs), primarily doing program management. “I do a lot of crisis management and triaging for people going through a hard time,” she says, which for her is a more fulfilling path than the one she was on prior to enlisting. Throughout her long military career, Melissa has been on six deployments, including Afghanistan and Iraq, and has been stationed in Japan, Korea, Honduras, and numerous cities across the United States.

“You learn to be comfortable being uncomfortable,” she says. “Change is inevitable when you’re in the military.” Melissa hopes to retire after she reaches her twenty-year military milestone, and become a park ranger so she can give back to her community. One of her fondest memories of being in the military involves just that — giving back and making a positive impact on others. While on a deployment, Melissa recorded service members reading books on camera — so the bedtime stories could be mailed to their children, who missed their parents desperately while they were overseas. “I would go to different installations and take a backpack with me [...] traveling to different locations, visiting with units. I’d set up a time for service members to read to their kids. There was one particular person stationed out of Canon… This Major went and gave me a big hug.” The Major had just gotten a picture of his child watching the video. The peace and calm it brought his son was priceless. “When I think I’m not doing my best,” she says, “I think about those personal relationships [...] that make a big impact on you and others.” And that’s what keeps her going after all these years.

Pitcher Vodka Lemonade Yield: Makes six cocktails Ingredients • 48 ounces homemade lemonade (or store-bought) • 12 ounces vodka • Ice, for serving • 1 lemon, sliced thinly • Fresh mint for garnish Instructions • Make the lemonade or pour store-bought in a pitcher. • Add vodka and lemon slices (can be made the day before). • To serve: pour cocktail over ice and garnish with fresh mint.

Grilled Corn Salad Yield: Serves 4-6

Ingredients • 2 ears corn, grilled and cut from the cob • 1 small shallot, thinly sliced into rings • 1/4 cup fresh feta or goat cheese, crumbled • 3 sprigs basil, leaves removed and torn • 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar • Black pepper to taste • Jalapeño, thinly sliced (optional) Instructions • Place corn kernels into a bowl with the rest of the ingredients and stir to combine. • Taste, and re-season with salt, pepper, and vinegar to taste.

Steak with Chimichurri Sauce Yield: Makes about 1 cup Ingredients • 1 cup (packed) fresh Italian parsley • 1/2 cup olive oil • 1/3 cup red wine vinegar • 1/4 cup (packed) fresh cilantro (optional) • 2 garlic cloves, peeled • 3/4 teaspoon dried crushed red pepper • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin • 1/2 teaspoon salt Steak • 1 ½-2 pounds flank steak, or steak of choice Instructions • Make sauce: Puree all ingredients in processor. Transfer to bowl. (Can be made 2 hours ahead. Cover and let stand at room temperature.) • Preheat grill to medium-high heat. Sear steak for 6-8 minutes on each side until heavily browned on the outside and slightly pink in the middle. • Thinly slice steak across the grain and top with Chimichurri sauce.

The Albuquerque Little Theatre has a Storied Past, a Robust Present, and a Bright Future In 1930, the now iconic Albuquerque Little Theatre (ALT) became the first theatre to host plays in the city. Performances were staged at various locations until the current venue, just south of Old Town Albuquerque, was built in 1936 with funding from one of Franklin Roosevelt’s “New Deal” programs. The building was designed by the renowned southwest architect John Gaw Meem. Henry Avery, ALT’s Executive and Artistic Director, explained, “There was no theatre venue at all in Albuquerque at the time. A group of citizens, led by Irene Fisher who was a local society reporter, got together and formed the company. ALT has continued this community involvement tradition into today with a mostly volunteer cast and crew.” Kathryn Kennedy O’Connor, who had experience with Broadway productions and had moved to Albuquerque for health reasons, was hired as the first theatre director. One of the earliest members of the theatre group was Vivian Vance who played Ethel Mertz on the “I Love Lucy” show. Vance’s EMMY award is displayed in the lobby at ALT. Henry told us, “Vivian Vance was in the very first show in 1930. She both acted and was also involved in production. Her EMMY was the first one ever given for Best Supporting Actress.” Henry said, “ We’re a true community theatre. We feature a revolving exhibit of local artists. We also have workshops for children and seniors. When we did a production of ‘Grease’ we had so many people audition that we were able to have two casts that performed on alternating weekends.” The Albuquerque Little Theatre’s next show is “Kinky Boots,” starting on August 26. Every year, The Albuquerque Little Theatre hands out The Vivian Awards to honor outstanding performances of actors and the efforts of the production crew. The awards are named after the late Vivian Vance who started her acting career at the theatre.
