America’s Top Women Advisors ranking was developed by SHOOK Research and is based on in-person, virtual and telephone due diligence meetings to evaluate each advisor qualitatively, a major component of a ranking algorithm that includes: client impact, industry experience, review of best practices and compliance records, firm nominations; and quantitative criteria, including: assets under management and revenue generated for their firms. Investment performance is not a criterion because client objectives and risk tolerances vary, and advisors rarely have audited performance reports. SHOOK’s research and rankings provide opinions intended to help investors choose the right financial advisor and are not indicative of future performance or representative of any one client’s experience. Love Cuts LOVE HAIR STUDIO FOR MEN'S HAIR TOO
Desiree Montoya has operated Love Hair Studio for three years.
A great hair salon is a place that generates confidence and self-esteem in the client, and brings out the creative and professional passion in the stylists. Love Hair Studio, in the Sawmill Village of northwest Albuquerque, is that place. Lots of attractive wood accents, an eclectic music playlist, and an extensive stock of professional hair care products makes it a comfortable and engaging atmosphere for something as personal as grooming. Owner Desiree Montoya says, “We’re a small boutique salon that prides itself on the fact that our main priority is customer service for both men and women. We’re by appointment only with no walk-ins. That way we can ensure that there is adequate time to give the client the attention that they are looking for.”

“We’re a small boutique salon that prides itself on the fact that our main priority is customer service for both men and women. We’re by appointment only with no walk-ins. That way we can ensure that there is adequate time to give the client the attention that they are looking for.” — Desiree Montoya
Stylist Joshua Garcia says, “Many male customers are at first apprehensive about going into a boutique salon. We spend time discussing what they’re looking for in a cut and put them at ease. We also consider the lifestyle of the customer. A lot of younger guys are going for the ‘skater look’— tousled and textured on top—however a professional who works in an office wants a more classic contour cut—a soft fade with a defined part line. We spend a lot of time keeping up with modern trends in styling. We go to conventions and trade shows to constantly update our knowledge.” Ramiro Cardenas, another stylist at Love Hair Studio, says, “It’s important to establish a relationship with our clientele. There’s a consultation at the onset. Styling hair is an art form so we make sure that we’re on the same page when someone sits in our chair. We give them advice on products that keep the cut looking like it did when they left the salon. Every stylist in the business has had someone

come in who’s nervous because they had a bad haircut somewhere in the past, so we need to make sure we spend the time discussing what they’re looking for. We’ve actually had customers that have just had a session somewhere else —I mean literally just got out of the chair in another salon—and are not happy with it and asked us to fix it!” Some of the current styles in men’s haircuts are: “fades”—the sides and back are tapered as close as possible, then fade up to longer on top, sometimes with a pompadour. The “slick back”—the hair is combed straight back and has pomade applied to make it sleek and shiny. The “induction” or “military style”—varying degrees of a really short haircut, sometimes with a little more hair on top, but not shaved down to the scalp. Love Hair Studio gets a lot of great reviews on Google. They are located at 1751 Bellamah Avenue, NW, suite 2103. Their phone number is 505.554.2300 and are open by appointment.
Ramiro Cardenas and Joshua Garcia (seated) are two of the stylists at the shop.

MEN OF INFLUENCE Seth Rochefort: Associate Broker/Realtor What is the best advice you have received? The only way to grow is to get out of your comfort zone. What advice do you have for someone pursuing your career? Study hard for the exam, take the exam prep course before testing, save as much money as possible, get a mentor or someone who can nurture you. What do you love most about New Mexico? The sunsets, The scenery, The people, the energy. How else do you make an impact out of the state? Or how does what you do make an impact? I want to help as many people as possible. This state has so many amazing qualities and it is a great place for healing. I know New Mexico is about to thrive and I am excited to be a part of it.

Brian McMath: Consumer Protection & Data Privacy Attorney How did you start the road to your success? My success started with my parents, who valued education and always pushed my brothers and I to do our best. I got to grow up in a stable home, went to good schools, and had a lot of things going for me right from the start that a lot of folks may not have. I randomly decided to take an advertising copywriting class at UNM during undergrad which launched me into my first career in radio, where I worked as a DJ, producer, and account executive for nearly a decade. As that industry changed and consolidated, I started looking for a new challenge. My wife suggested law school, so I talked with a few folks, took the LSAT, and applied to UNM a second time. I told one of my professors I wanted to work on “big things” and feel like I was making a difference for the people of New Mexico, so he suggested I clerk at the New Mexico Office of the Attorney General my first summer. I did, I loved it, and when there was an opportunity to join the office in 2017 as a consumer protection attorney, I jumped at the chance. What is the best advice you have received? I’ve had the good fortune of getting a lot of really good advice in my life. One of the best was, the best way to get what you want is to help other people get what they want. It sounds kind of simple, but it has served me really well and has helped me become a good team member. At the end of the day, if you’re in it just for yourself I don’t think you get as far. How do you give back to the community? Or what do you do to give back? I really enjoy sitting on boards of non-profits and helping them navigate various issues. I’m currently on the board of directors of Goodwill Industries of New Mexico, and I love it. Turning unwanted household items into good-paying jobs, support, and innovative programs for some of New Mexico’s most vulnerable is a great way to volunteer. How else do you make an impact out of the state? Or how does what you do make an impact? I’m lucky that I get to say that my job makes an impact here in New Mexico. I lead the State’s opioid litigation team, and so far, our team has recovered hundreds of millions of dollars to fund opioid addiction treatment programs in communities all over the State. Our teams are involved in everything from securing water for our farmers in the Rio Grande valley and combating climate change to making the internet safer for kids and protecting elderly New Mexicans from deceptive sales tactics. It’s not an easy job, but it’s an important one and I’m honored that I get to do it every day for a State I love to call home.

Nick Baron/Dyaus Winters: Albuquerque MC and Actor How did you start the road to your success? Well, I think success is subjective. In my eyes I haven’t achieved any kind of success yet. Someone else may see the things I’ve done and consider me successful, but my idea of success is something I haven’t reached yet. So I’d say my success, is a work in progress and that may be how I feel forever because the more I achieve the higher and higher I strive to climb. What advice do you have for someone pursuing your career? Keep quiet and let the work do the talking. What do you love most about New Mexico? I love EVERYTHING about New Mexico, from the rich culture, to the food, and the communities of great people. But if I had to pick one, I can’t go without some good ol’ New Mexican food! Hahaha Green and Red chili are two things I could never go without for too long. How else do you make an impact out of the state? Or how does what you do make an impact? To be honest I can’t say if I have, or haven’t, or ever will make an impact on the community. But I do know that every interaction you have is an opportunity to make a positive impact on others. So, I always try to lead every interaction I have with positivity in mind, in hopes of impacting everyone I meet positively.

Robert “Buck D” Gipson: Albuquerque Comedian How did you start the road to your success? I honestly have to say it began simply with me entertaining people and cracking jokes on social media. What is the best advice you have received? Never be afraid to try something you never saw yourself doing. What advice do you have for someone pursuing your career? No 2 paths are the same. Just because people do it one way, doesn’t mean your journey has to go down the exact same road. Also, the most specific advice I’ve ever received in comedy was from Def Comedy Jam host Joe Torry. At the time I had been doing comedy for 5 years, he told me has been doing it for 32 years, and that he is a 32-year-old when it comes to stand-up and I was a 5 year old. That resonated so much with me because it let me know I had so much to learn when it comes to the art of stand-up and that I had a long road ahead of me if I wanted to. How do you give back to the community? Or what do you do to give back? As a part of Two Men On on 95.9FM AM610 The Sports Animal, I’ve been a part of initiatives with Locker #505 Students Clothing Bank, and just recently participated in Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central NM Bowl For Kids’ Sake 2022 as a part of Team Cumulus Media. “I love you so much.” It’s one of Austin’s many remarkable and Instagrammable street murals but is also a love letter from locals and visitors alike who adore this “weird” and wonderful city in the South. The capital city of Texas is best known for having a personality of its own, one bursting with foodie and fashion finds, outdoor activities and “Austintatious” art creations, a booming sphere of pro sports experiences (we see you Formula 1 and Austin FC), and seven days a week of live music to boot. Did we mention it’s sunny nearly 300 days a year? It’s time to GET AWAY!
Photography Nathan Fluellen
This month, our City Lifestyle family of travel enthusiasts are thrilled to collaborate with Visit Austin to introduce an exclusively curated guide to this lively destination paired with a GIVEAWAY* opportunity to win a 2-night trip for two, with round trip airfare from American Airlines! Sunny most days of the year, Austin is recognized for a myriad of outdoor experiences which you can experience both in downtown Austin with scenic views of the skyline, as well as the surrounding area, including local treasure, Lady Bird Lake. When it comes to luxury accommodations, one of the most stunning hotels in Austin is the Commodore Perry Estate. This striking and historic property, once a 10,800-square-foot private mansion known to host Jazz era social extravaganzas, has been transformed into a modern and European-influenced spectacular resort now open to the public.
Austin is renowned for pleasing palates, with an exceptional restaurant scene, including barbecue and tacos as its true soul foods. Pair your tacos with queso and the must-have margaritas for an authentic Tex-Mex meal, or indulge in Austin’s quintessential barbecue. Austin’s slowcooked, fall-off-the-bone brisket is a mouth-watering experience not to miss. Beyond barbecue and Tex-Mex is an entire mix of palate pleasers, from upscale Mediterranean and Asian to James Beard award-winning eateries. Geraldine’s inside Hotel Van Zandt is one of Austin’s iconic Rainey Street destinations. Equal parts restaurant, bar, rooftop and live music venue, Geraldine’s overlooks beautiful Lady Bird Lake and offers 4th f loor cabanas, a nightly concert lineup and a chef’s contemporary menu.
