money sense
Health & Aging: Is Your Family Ready to Cover the Costs? Use these four questions as a guide to help you plan ahead for future medical and caregiving needs. Most people don’t want to think about the health-related what-ifs that come with aging, let alone talk about them — especially with family. Nonetheless, that conversation is critical to have. Having a plan in place that you’ve put together as a family can free everyone up to focus on each other, instead of worrying about where the money will come from should you, or an aging parent or spouse, fall ill. “The best time to talk about these matters is before you need to,” notes Cynthia Hutchins, director of financial gerontology at Bank of America. Below are four questions to help you start having these important family talks with your spouse, your children, your parents and your siblings. Use them to share your expectations with your family. Consult your financial advisor about ways to prepare financially for the healthcare costs that may occur. And keep talking as years go by and circumstances change. While no one can know the future, being prepared for what might come next can make the road ahead easier. Here are four questions that can help you start having these important family conversations. 1. Where will the money come from? Talk about potential expenses associated with a long-term illness, such as home healthcare or modifications to the family home to accommodate a future disability. Should your parents purchase disability or a long term insurance, consider choices
such as hybrid forms of life insurance and health savings accounts, or simply save and invest more? Review your choices with your financial advisor, who can help you ensure that your retirement and any other goals aren’t put in jeopardy. 2. Will our parents have the care they need as they grow older? Many people struggle with aging parents’ unwillingness to face their limitations. That’s why it can be wise to bring up these issues early. Ask specific questions like: At what point would it make sense for you to stop driving, or to have a caretaker come in to help with the meals? Kate Wilber, professor of gerontology at the University of Southern California-Leonard Davis School of Gerontology, says. “Often, at first, you’ll be rebuffed. This will likely take more than one conversation.” 3. Who will provide the caregiving, if it is needed? Cynthia Hutchins, director of financial gerontology at Bank of America recommends that siblings should talk among themselves about how they’ll share the caregiving role. “You want to be sure that both your parents and your own needs are considered. Sometimes it makes sense to cobble together a combination of inhome and outside care,” she says, where siblings can at least share costs, if not the hands-on responsibilities.
4. What about end-of-life issues? Among the things to consider: Which medical treatments do you and your parents want to be used or avoided at the end of your lives? Who do you want to be your healthcare proxy if you are unable to communicate your wishes? You can use a healthcare power of attorney and a living will to document your choices. And begin thinking about how you want to pass on your legacy — financial and otherwise.

BEAUTY EXPERT AMY GALLOWAY GIVES HER BEST TIPS ON MAXIMIZING ON YOUR HOLIDAY GLAM PLAN ARTICLE BY AMY GALLOWAY 12

OLIDAY PARTIES ARE HERE, AND WE INVITED OUR FRIEND
AND MAKEUP EXPERT AMY GALLOWAY TO GIVE HER BEST TIPS FOR ACHIEVING A FLAWLESS AND FABULOUS LOOK. Amy has worked with countless models and stars in Los Angeles. You can follow Amy on Instagram for more tips and looks. @Glammedbydex. From Amy: Facials - They make a huge difference in the way your foundation sits on the skin. Without proper exfoliation and hydration, it can leave your skin and makeup looking dry and dull. Don't forget to exfoliate your lips for a perfectly smooth lip look too.
“Treat yourself to mani+ pedi - it is good for the soul to pamper yourself with some self-care love!” Lashes - Bold lashes make your eyes look bigger and brighter, drawing a contrast between the eye itself. Lash extensions are a great investment and make a big impact. If you don't want extensions, magnetic lashes by KISS are a must-have. Local lash expert Mikal at Zia Spa & Beauty suggests a lash lift for those who just want to create a dramatic swoop with their natural lashes. Schedule both lashes and a facial with Mikal to maximize your glam plan..ziaspaandbeauty.com Essential Face Products - You need to have a great foundation, concealer, and of course, a great lipstick. I use a dewy foundation for a flawless finish. Using warm blush tones on any skin complexion is a big advantage providing a fresh sun-kissed glow. The Eyes - I am obsessed with cream shadows, which are goof-proof when using your finger or a brush. This is definitely another essential product to add more glam and makes it is easy to change your look from day to night. Grab a brown eyeliner and smudge it in your crease and the inner rim of the eye to change your look in minutes. Treat yourself to mani+ pedi - it is good for the soul to pamper yourself with some self-care love! A local favorite is Gene Mariez Salon that is offering a nice little holiday package. Judges, including Daniel Warren from Albuquerque Whiskey Society, had to grade each contestant on their presence and technique as a bartender and the visual appeal, taste, creativity, and cocktail name. The cocktails were more than appealing...they made the crowd downright thirsty! The bartenders themselves were supportive of one another and had nothing but compliments for each other’s creations. The judges had a difficult time amidst so many delicious flavors. As results were tallied, everyone waited with anticipation. Not even the judges had a solid feeling as to which bartenders would come out on top! It was an intense competition that did not disappoint. In the end, Arcy Law from M’tucci’s Italian took the event with his October Star, Gunpowder Revolution and Uvam Ex Dante. Taking second was Megan Lees from Bourbon & Boots with her Gentleman’s Delight, The Last 9 Words, and Tequi-Lime Pie Sour. Noemi Leon from Hotel Albuquerque took third with A Flower From a Gentleman, The Ford 2-1-2, and A Sleepy Time in Mexico. It was an intense competition, and the other participants did not disappoint. A lifestyle is to be crafted. Get out and find these phenomenal mixologists at M’tuccis Italian, Bourbon & Boots, Hotel Albuquerque, Dirty Bourbon, Canvas, Artichoke Cafe, Vernon’s Steakhouse, Seasons, Salt Yard West, and many many more. Arcy Law Service & Beverage Manager, M’tucci’s
I am originally from… I was born and raised in Albuquerque. When I’m not working... My fiancé and I love to travel places, often chasing food and beverage regions. Also, an avid golfer and motorcyclist who enjoys cooking, making beer, and drinking whiskey. When the pandemic hit… I was very fortunate to be working with M’tucci’s. My role with the company kept me working through the pandemic, primarily with our food delivery and curbside service. However, COVID greatly impacted our overall service offering, costing us many great team members and a severe drought in revenue. Thankfully, we were able to survive when so many great restaurants were not.

I enjoy creating craft cocktails because… There is joy in making craft cocktails because it brings enjoyment to others. In addition, crafting opens opportunities to educate our community and get to know many folks on a personal level. I firmly believe we reach our guests through our craft, and that’s a great feeling. My favorite cocktail to drink is… Folks will laugh, but I love a simple Daiquiri, but you can’t go wrong with a Guinness and a shot of rye! The Culture Shakers Cocktail Competition was… The experience was thrilling, the competition was well run, and the judging panel was great. I couldn’t have asked for a better competition to participate in.

Bart Manager / Director of Marketing at Bourbon & Boots I am originally from… a super small town called Wellsburg, WV. After undergrad, I decided to join my mom here for new opportunities and diversity. I picked up my first bartending job in Albuquerque to help pay my way through graduate school and ended up falling absolutely in love with it! When I’m not working... I love spending time with my friends, walking my dog, going to the gym, and cooking for family and friends. I love traveling and attending different music festivals. When the pandemic hit… Bourbon & Boots had just opened when state-mandated closures hit. Like many others, I experienced a great deal of loss, and my mental wellness was at an all-time low. In the fall, I found a job with Hollow Spirits Distillery, which gave me hope, drive, and a re-imagined love of craft cocktails. Finally, after what seemed like a lifetime, Bourbon & Boots could reopen, and I couldn’t have been happier to get back behind MY bar! I enjoy creating craft cocktails because… much like I enjoy cre-

My favorite cocktail to drink is…. a Nikle Vodka Martini, but a traditional or flavored whiskey sour is a close second. The Culture Shakers Cocktail Competition was… amazing. It was only my third competition - and my peers have always been and were so welcoming and helpful once again. The atmosphere was exciting and fun, and I’d love to be back for the next event!

Food & Beverage Manager at Hotel Albuquerque I am originally from… Templeton, CA. I moved out here over 11 years ago and received a degree in Evolutionary Anthropology. UNM brought me here, but the people and vibes have kept me here. When I’m not working... I love binge-watching Asian dramas, sampling new spirits, trying new restaurants with my partner, and singing “I will survive!” from Gloria Gaynor when I clean. When the pandemic hit… I felt lost, anxious, and also weirdly free. I could sleep whenever, read, take online classes, do a movie with drink+food pairings. It was surreal! I returned to work, and after several internal moves and additional shutdowns, I took the Food & Beverage Director role. Now I share my knowledge and passion with the bartenders at my venues. I enjoy creating craft cocktails because… I loved creating flavors and mixing colors and smells from memories. It’s my way to paint a picture of my life through craft cocktailing. My favorite cocktail to drink… I tend to be a very seasonal drinker, but my heart will always get pulled to an Oaxacan Old Fashioned.

LOCAL LIMELIGHT EDUCATING ONE POUR AT A TIME
IT ’S W HISKEY BUSINESS! WHISKY CONNOISSEUR DANIEL WARREN AND HIS WIFE, LIZ SANCHEZ, STARTED THE ALBUQUERQUE WHISKEY SOCIETY (AWS) IN SEPTEMBER 2018. Daniel, originally from Tennessee, has always been intrigued by "the complexity and deliciousness of the water of life, aka whiskey." His love for whiskey and Liz's love for entertaining inspired them to curate unique informative gatherings. Daniel would review different whisky profiles as the group shared great food. The meetings were a hit, so Daniel, an IT fanatic, immediately created a website. He and Liz then set

GIVING BACK
Gratefully
ARTICLE ALLISON GIBESON PHOTOGRAPHY JANIE JONES
GIVING AWAY AFTER A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN LAST YEAR, LIFESTYLE PUBLICATIONS IS GIVING $300,000 TO RECIPIENTS IN NEED THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON AND BEYOND... AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!
ABOUT SIX YEARS AGO ANNA SAROL, THE DAUGHTER OF A SINGLE MOTHER, WAS PARALYZED IN A GYMNASTICS ACCIDENT WHEN SHE WAS A FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL, BUT UNTIL LAST YEAR SHE DID NOT HAVE A STAIRLIFT IN HER HOME. The stairlift was made possible when Lifestyle Publications gave her family $10,000. “I watched my community come together to help me get this equipment to my house, and words can’t explain how appreciative my

family and I are,” Anna says. The money for Anna’s stairlift was part of a giveaway campaign from the company during the 2020 Christmas season that benefited more than 80 recipients across the country with a final distribution of $250,000 throughout the year. When the company opened nominations, they were flooded with submissions. Community leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you nominated people that were in need of assistance. As the eyes and ears of the community, these readers were able to help identify people who might have

otherwise gone unnoticed or unrecognized. One such nominee was Kathy*, an aunt who is raising her three young relatives. The children came from an abusive situation, and Kathy, a single guardian, works tirelessly to provide for them. Nevertheless, the family was already living in poverty despite her working seven days a week when Kathy lost her job during the pandemic. She resorted to selling tamales to help pay the rent. When a case manager with a Big Brothers Big Sisters foster youth mentoring program heard about Lifestyle’s campaign and call for nominations, she quickly thought of Kathy. “When I shared the news that Kathy was selected and would be receiving $3,000, she cried, screamed, and was in disbelief,” the case manager said. “She immediately wanted to give back to me and the donor by providing endless tamales. This funding allowed the children to have a small Christmas tree for the first time ever. Kathy was able to pay her rent and utilities for three months, and the children were able to experience a holiday season in peace without financial stressors.” In yet another case, Emily* who worked as a janitor at a school, was a recipient and was struggling to afford simply buying groceries for her children. Before the ongoing difficulties of the pandemic even started, a tornado destroyed the school she worked at just a couple weeks before the initial shutdown in March 2020 which resulted in a loss of income for her. Emily was incredibly surprised and grateful to receive assistance from the giveaway. *Names changed for privacy
