There’s something about the dog days of summer that stirs up sweet nostalgia—sticky popsicles on porches, bare feet on warm pavement and fireworks lighting up the July sky. The Fourth of July has a way of anchoring our memories with the scent of barbecue, the sound of laughter and the glow of sparklers held high. In this issue, we celebrate the season with stories that capture the spirit of summer, from festive backyard gatherings to spontaneous road trips and the people in our community who make this time of year sparkle.
We’re chasing summer adventures just beyond Aiken—from lazy river floats to sunset skies filled with purple martins. If you're craving a quick getaway packed with fun, flavor and fresh discoveries, we've got you covered.
Step into a picture-perfect Fourth of July celebration hosted by Rick and Lisa Pelfrey where friends, fireworks and finger-licking barbecue came together for a night to remember. With Dukes Bar-B-Que at the heart of the gathering, the food did more than fill plates—it brought people together in true Southern style. It’s a story of tradition, flavor and the kind of summer memories that linger long after the sparklers fade.
You’ll also meet the husband-and-wife team behind Juniper Equiland, a new Aiken-based business transforming pasture care with science, heart and horsefirst thinking. Born from their own horse’s recovery journey, Chris and Nicole Johnson are helping local owners create safer, healthier environments from the ground up. Their story is proof that every pasture has a story—and with the proper care, it can have a better ending.
And finally, meet Lee Graybeal, the hands-on builder behind some of the most thoughtfully crafted custom homes and renovations in the CSRA. With decades of experience and a deep commitment to personal service, Graybeal Construction & Design is known for quality that lasts and relationships that matter—step inside the story of a builder who treats every project like home.
As I write this, I’m getting ready to celebrate one of those milestone birthdays— the kind with a zero at the end. My husband is in the kitchen making my favorite treat, chocolate-covered cream puffs, while I try to decide just how many I really have to share with the kids. Wishing you a July full of sweet moments, summer fun and maybe a little something just for you. See you next month!

EXPLORE THE BEAUTY OF THE CAROLINAS ON HORSEBACK WITH THE TRAIL RIDING COMPANY
LaDonna Heise, owner of The Trail Riding Company in Aiken, SC, has always had a deep-rooted passion for horses. From her earliest memories, she was drawn to the quiet strength of nature and the loyal companionship of horses. She grew up helping her grandfather plow fields with his mules, learning early on the value of hard work and the unbreakable bond between humans and horses. At just six years old, she was gifted her first pony, a gentle soul named Cherokee. He lived for 35 years and was the beginning of her lifelong love affair with horses.
Heise always knew she wanted to start her own business, and in 2010 that dream became reality with The Trail Riding Company. Through it, she created a unique way to share her passion for horses, agriculture, horticulture and conservation. This premier horseback adventure allows riders of all skill levels to enjoy
the region's beauty and diverse terrain. Whether riding trails in Aiken or exploring sandy beaches and mountain paths nearby, Heise provides an immersive experience that goes far beyond a simple horseback ride. Her extensive knowledge of the local floral and fauna allow her to make the rides not just enjoyable but also educational. Each guided journey is enriched by thoughtful commentary on local plants, wildlife and historical significance.
One of the most beloved qualities of The Trail Riding Company is the exceptional nature of the horses themselves. The herd is hand selected for temperament, which has opened the door for guests of all ages and backgrounds to feel confident in the saddle and be able to enjoy the experience.
Heise’s gentle leadership and never-ending love for her hometown shines through in every trail ride. She loves advocating for
the city, especially to the many tourists who find their way to her trails. “Every path leads to a new discovery,” she often says, whether that path winds beside a stream, chases mountain views or follows the rhythm of the ocean’s tide.
The trust she’s built with her horses allows her to create personalized experiences for every rider. One of her most touching memories is when a young man flew his 80-year-old mother to Aiken to fulfill her lifelong dream of riding a horse. Heise made that moment possible, and she continues to create experiences that linger long after the last hoof-print fades.
To book your own trail adventure and discover the magic of Aiken on horseback, call 803-507-5487 or visit The Trail Riding Company on Facebook. For Heise, each day is a gift, and she looks forward to leading you on a journey that will stir your soul and connect you with the land in a meaningful way.

Cemented in Generations of Real Estate, Graybeal Construction & Design Brings Custom Homebuilding and Transformative Remodels to Life.
When it comes to custom homes and high-quality renovations in Aiken and the greater CSRA region, Graybeal Construction & Design stands out—not just for premiere craftsmanship — but for the hands-on commitment of its founder, Lee Graybeal. With over 38 years of experience in real estate and construction, Graybeal has built a business on quality, integrity and an intimate approach to homebuilding.
“What I offer is personal attention, from start to finish,” said Graybeal. “My clients know what I look like. I’m on the job site. I handle every estimate and all day-to-day operations myself.”
Graybeal Construction & Design specializes in high-quality custom homes and renovations, serving clients throughout Aiken, North Augusta, Greenwood and beyond. Licensed in both South Carolina and Georgia as a real estate broker and residential and commercial builder, Graybeal has deep connections in the region and in the business itself. “I grew up around it,” he shares. “My stepfather, Jim Beard, started building homes in 1985. I first helped him frame a house at just 14 years old. At one point, we were doing 100 homes a year — it was full throttle.”
After starting out in real estate at 18 years old and then earning his MBA, Graybeal gravitated toward the custom side of home construction. “We evolved into fewer homes with higher quality,” he explains. “It’s just a better business model for me — less volume, more attention to detail. I love to see homes we’ve built that will last forever and that families are proud to call home.”
A detail-oriented mindset is something he’s carried with him since childhood. “I built model cars and planes as a kid. I’d paint the numbers on the dials and make the seats look like real leather. I’ve always

been drawn to the little things that make something great — the finishes, the fit and the feeling it gives.”
Graybeal’s business thrives on long-term relationships — not just with clients, but with subcontractors and staff. “I’ve worked with the same trim carpenter for over 25 years and most other subcontractors and suppliers for over 15 years. I don’t shop for the cheapest labor. I stick with the best guy for the best price,” he remarks. “It’s a delicate dance and every job is different. I’ve done this long enough to keep things moving and do it well.”
Behind the scenes, Graybeal credits a powerhouse team of designers who coordinate with suppliers, help clients select finishes and fixtures and ensure the experience is seamless from the ground up. “I’d be nowhere without them,” he adds with a smile.
Graybeal believes in keeping low overhead costs, eliminating layers of management and offering what he calls a personal building experience. There are no middlemen — clients work directly with Lee. That level of involvement is rare in today’s industry, and it’s one reason Graybeal Construction & Design has earned a loyal following and strong reputation.
“My goal is simple — to build something lasting that reflects the client’s vision and to make sure the client enjoys the process. It’s not just about framing walls and installing trim. It’s about creating a space that can be part of someone’s life, their story and their future.”
As a dad of two teenage boys and a North Augusta native, Lee Graybeal is invested in the community. With every home he builds, he continues a family legacy of excellence.

Transforming Pasture Management in Aiken, SC with Horse First Strategies, Scientific Precision and Deeply Personal Experience
In Aiken, South Carolina, where horse culture runs deep, a new business is raising the bar for pasture management. Juniper Equiland isn’t just another service provider; it’s a mission-driven, forage-focused enterprise born from personal experience, scientific partnerships and a deep understanding of horse-first land care. Chris and Nicole Johnson moved to Aiken from Florida with a dream: more land, more peace and more space to give their horse the life he deserved. But the story behind Juniper Equiland starts well before they crossed state lines; it begins in Florida with a horse named Archie.
While still living in Florida, Archie suffered a full founder episode, a devastating case of laminitis that could have ended his life. Instead, it changed theirs. Over the course of a grueling year, they worked side by side with the University of Florida’s equine hospital, top farriers, nutritionists and movement specialists. Archie’s recovery wasn’t just a win; it was a wake-up call. The Johnsons saw firsthand how interconnected every aspect of equine care really is. That journey taught them that metabolic horse care is a puzzle. Every piece, pasture management, nutrition, farriery and exercise must work together. And the pasture? That’s where safety begins.
This understanding became the foundation for Juniper Equiland. The Johnsons don’t claim to be scientists, but they do something just as valuable; they collaborate with them. Juniper Equiland partners with soil experts and agronomy professionals to bring cutting-edge, researchbacked solutions to local horse properties. They translate complex science into smart, practical strategies that work for real horse owners right here in Aiken County.
Their approach to pasture care starts from the ground up…literally. Every plan begins with the soil, using research-informed practices to build fertility, restore balance and encourage resilient forage growth over time. It’s not about quick fixes or one-size-fits-all programs. Instead, they develop long-term strategies tailored to Aiken’s unique climate, creating conditions where healthy, sustainable grasses can thrive. Weed control is never cosmetic; it’s used strategically to reduce stress on forage plants, a major contributor to sugar accumulation and a hidden risk for sensitive horses. Juniper Equiland stays closely attuned to emerging soil research and product innovation, always looking for ways to improve outcomes without compromising safety.
“EVERY PASTURE TELLS A STORY. JUNIPER EQUILAND IS HERE TO HELP CHANGE THE ENDING, ONE PASTURE AT A TIME.”
Shortly after moving to Aiken, they began working with their first local client, Maxine EmerichJaquish, owner of Engineered Equine Performance LLC. Much like Juniper Equiland, her business is cutting edge, focused on enhanced preventative and rehabilitative care through innovative practices in equine sports medicine. She understood the importance of a land management approach that matched her high standards for horse care. The Johnsons spent time listening, walking her property and talking about her vision for how her land should support the well-being of the horses in her program. Together, they developed a customized plan that blended Emerich-Jaquish’s wants and needs with a treatment strategy that made sense for the soil, the forage and her horses. That partnership set the tone for what Juniper Equiland represents: thoughtful, horse-focused precision care for every pasture.
Aiken is home to many different soil types, and each one demands a tailored approach. Juniper Equiland begins every client relationship with soil analysis to understand nutrient levels, pH and deficiencies. Then they evaluate the land on-site by mapping conditions, plant health and drainage patterns. Only once that data is collected do they develop a customized pasture plan that aligns with the specific needs of the property and the horses who live there.
Archie, once crippled by laminitis, is now back in the show ring– sound, strong and winning. His comeback is more than a personal victory. It’s a reminder that with intentional land management and a connected care plan, managed recovery is possible and so is a return to a full, active life.
The name “Juniper Equiland” itself is rooted in the land they call home. When the Johnsons first stepped onto their Aiken property, they were immediately drawn to a towering juniper tree. It stood alone, strong and enduring, a symbol of resilience and rootedness. That tree became their logo and their emblem. It represents not just the property, but the spirit of the work they do: grounded, deliberate and built to last.
Juniper Equiland wasn’t built to follow tradition; it was built to re-think it. Instead of relying on how things have always been done, they bring fresh eyes, clear strategy and a deeper understanding of how horses and forage work together. In a place like Aiken, where land is part of daily life, that shift matters. Because sustainable pasture care isn’t just about better grass, it’s about smarter decisions, healthier systems and long-term results. Every pasture tells a story. Juniper Equiland is here to help change the ending, one pasture at a time.

There’s something about the Fourth of July that brings out the best in summer: warm evenings, glowing sparklers, laughter echoing off the water and the unmistakable smell of barbecue in the air. This year Rick and Lisa Pelfrey hosted a celebration that captured the very heart of Independence Day, welcoming friends to their home in Aiken for a relaxed, joy-filled evening centered around their pool and cozy pool house. But the real star of the party, aside from the fireworks, was the food. Thanks to Dukes Bar-B-Que, the Pelfreys didn’t have to lift a finger in the kitchen. They simply opened their doors, turned on the music and let the flavors of tradition take over.
For anyone familiar with Aiken, Dukes Bar-B-Que is more than just a place to grab a plate; it’s a well-loved Southern institution. For decades this family-run business has served up time-honored recipes prepared with the kind of care and consistency that can only come from generations of experience. When you eat Dukes, you’re not just eating pulled pork or hash and rice, you’re tasting a legacy of love, community and heritage that feels like coming home. And for a gathering as nostalgic and all-American as the Fourth of July, there couldn’t have been a better selection.
“WHEN WE CATER AN EVENT, WE WANT families TO ENJOY THEMSELVES. THAT’S WHAT THIS food IS ABOUT, BRINGING people together.”
Christian and Rebecca Judy, the owners who help lead the restaurant and catering side of Dukes, take pride in making every event feel special. They know how stressful planning a party can be, especially when it comes to feeding a crowd. That’s why they’ve made it their mission to bring the comfort and flavor of Dukes straight to your doorstep. “We love helping people make memories,” says Christian. “When we cater an event, we want families to just enjoy themselves. That’s what this food is about, bringing people together.” Whether it’s a wedding, a corporate event or a backyard celebration, Dukes makes the entire experience seamless, flavorful and authentically Southern.
For the Pelfreys, this catering option meant they could actually enjoy the holiday alongside their guests, instead of running around with serving spoons and timers. As people arrived, the scent of slow-cooked barbecue wafted through the air and set the tone immediately. Plates were piled high with hash and rice, coleslaw and baked beans that practically melted in your mouth. Kids darted between the pool and the buffet table, their faces streaked with sauce and toothy smiles, while adults sipped cold drinks and shared stories in the shade of the pool house.
Laughter bubbled up around games of corn hole, homemade ice cream churned slowly on the deck and sparklers lit up little hands as the sun dipped below the horizon. All of it unfolded with the kind of ease that only happens when the hard work is already taken care of. The food didn’t just feed the party, it set the stage for it. Every bite tasted like summer and tradition, like porch swings and picnic tables, like something your grandma would have made if she’d had an industrial smoker out back.
One of the guests remarked that they hadn’t tasted barbecue like this since they were a kid growing up in the Carolinas. Another said the hash reminded them of their grandfather’s
“WE
Sunday suppers. It was clear that Dukes doesn’t just deliver delicious food, they deliver a feeling. A feeling of belonging, of Southern roots, of pride in simple, honest cooking done right. And on a day that celebrates freedom and family, what could be more fitting?
As the night wore on and the stars came out, guests wrapped themselves in beach towels and blankets and gathered on the grass underneath the stars. The air was filled with the scent of citronella and the lingering sweetness of barbecue sauce. Kids were still licking their fingers and asking for seconds while grown-ups went back for just one more helping of banana pudding.
It wasn’t a party marked by extravagance but rather by warmth, by the clink of ice in glasses, the hum of familiar voices and the magic of being present. That’s the beauty of a Dukescatered event. It lets the hosts focus on what matters most: each other. And it turns a gathering into something unforgettable.
For the Pelfreys and their guests, the night was everything a Fourth of July should be. Full of good food, better company and memories that’ll be talked about for summers to come. And at the heart of it all was Dukes Bar-B-Que, a Southern tradition that doesn’t just taste like home. It is home.
Because in Aiken, it’s just not the Fourth of July without Dukes.

“Lake Murray in South Carolina becomes a spectacular natural stage for one of North America’s most awe-inspiring events: the migration of the purple martins.”
Each summer Bomb Island on Lake Murray in South Carolina becomes a spectacular natural stage for one of North America’s most awe-inspiring events: the migration of the purple martins. Nearly a million sleek, iridescent birds gather from late June through August to rest for their journey back to South America. At sunset they congregate at Bomb Island, creating swirling black clouds in the sky before settling in for the night. It’s the largest roosting site in North America and a must-see phenomenon for bird lovers and nature enthusiasts alike.
The best way to experience this migration is by boat. Several local tour companies offer evening cruises timed perfectly to witness the martins’ breathtaking aerial ballet. For a more personal adventure, rent a pontoon or kayak and anchor near the island around dusk. Bring binoculars, a camera and a sense of wonder—because once you see it, you’ll never forget.
