It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

As the holiday season wraps Aiken in twinkling lights and hometown cheer, our December issue offers stories that celebrate tradition, transformation and the simple joy of gathering close.

We begin with a backstage pass to one of Aiken’s most beloved traditions—The Nutcracker. Now in its fifteenth year, the Aiken Civic Ballet’s annual production continues to dazzle audiences of all ages. Whether you're watching for the first time or have seen Clara grow up on stage, this performance captures the heart of the holidays through dance, dedication and community spirit.

From the stage to the smoker, we turn next to Kurt Mueller, a former financial planner who left the world of spreadsheets to follow his lifelong love of barbecue. What began as weekend cookouts with his dad became Ironhead BBQ—a new restaurant in Augusta that’s serving up ribs, brisket and a whole lot of heart. His story is a reminder that it’s never too late to take a leap and turn passion into purpose.

If you're looking to take that spirit on the road, we spotlight two destinations perfect for a holiday getaway. Along the Hammock Coast, stroll through candlelit gardens and charming waterfronts. In Charleston, Hotel Bennett offers a grand and cozy holiday experience complete with tea parties, twinkling trees and gingerbread galore. Both are just a short drive from Aiken and filled with reasons to start a new seasonal tradition.

Back home, there’s another way to make this season brighter. The Aiken Chamber’s Red Ticket Campaign returns with cash prizes for shopping local— because supporting small businesses is a gift that gives back. With over $7 million in tracked spending since it began, this cheerful initiative continues to boost the local economy while adding a little extra excitement to your holiday errands.

From community stages to backyard smokers, candlelit streets to small-town storefronts, this issue is packed with stories that reflect the warmth and wonder of the season—right here and just down the road.

See you in the new year!

SARA’S FARM ADVENTURE IS LIGHTING UP THE HOLIDAY SEASON

With a front-row view of both the farm’s growth and its festive traditions, Karisa shared how the event has become a magical holiday experience for families across the community.

Shop Local, Win Big

The Aiken Chamber of Commerce is spreading cheer with its annual Red Ticket Campaign, now in its fifth year. From November 1 to December 15, shoppers earn one red ticket for every $25 spent at participating local businesses. Each ticket becomes a chance to win cash prizes totaling $4,500. Drawings will be held live on the Chamber’s Facebook page on November 24 and December 1, 8 and 15.

A TIMELESS TRADITION

THE MAGIC OF THE NUTCRACKER IN AIKEN

Every December as the air in Aiken turns crisp and downtown streets twinkle with Christmas lights, families gather in eager anticipation for one of the city’s most cherished holiday traditions, the Aiken Civic Ballet’s annual production of The Nutcracker. For fifteen years, this enchanting performance has captured hearts, kindled nostalgia and brought the magic of the season to life on stage.

It all began with the vision of Diane Miller whose dream was to give Aiken a professional-quality ballet production that could become a community cornerstone. Her vision blossomed into an enduring holiday favorite that continues to unite generations. Even as the production has evolved with new choreography, costumes and stage enhancements, the company has remained

faithful to Miller’s original artistic vision. That balance of tradition and renewal is part of what makes The Nutcracker so special.

From the moment the curtain rises, the magic begins. Children gasp in awe as the Christmas party performance begins with toy soldiers coming to life and the graceful Sugar Plum Fairy gliding across the stage. The music of Tchaikovsky swells through the theater, sweeping audiences into Clara’s dreamlike world of snowflakes and sweets. It’s a story that never grows old no matter how many times it’s told.

For many Aiken families, The Nutcracker has become a personal holiday ritual, a memory-making experience passed down year after year. Some audience members have watched the same dancers grow up on stage, transforming from tiny angels to elegant lead performers. This continuity gives the production a uniquely heartfelt quality, reminding everyone that the spirit of Christmas is as much about growth and grace as it is about wonder and joy.

Even during intermission, the excitement doesn’t fade. Families mingle in the lobby, children clutching their newly purchased nutcrackers, some adding to a collection that marks each passing year. The smiles, laughter and chatter are as much a part of the experience as the ballet itself.

The Aiken Civic Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker is more than just a performance, it’s a celebration of artistry, tradition and community. It’s where dreams twirl to life under the stage lights, where music stirs memories and where young and old alike are reminded that magic still exists in the most timeless of places.

This Christmas, don’t miss your chance to experience the wonder. Let the familiarity of The Nutcracker carry you into the heart of the holidays where the magic of Aiken truly shines.

A FAMILY’S FAITH AND HARD WORK TURN STILL CREEK TREE FARM INTO AIKEN’S HOLIDAY HAVEN

Evergreen

Christmas Magic

When our team at Aiken City Lifestyle reached out to Charles Shoup, owner of Still Creek Tree Farm, about hosting a Christmas photoshoot on his property, his response reflected the very heart of southern hospitality, kindness, graciousness and warmth. It was clear upon arrival that Still Creek was more than just a tree farm; it was a living, breathing portrait of holiday spirit nestled right here in Aiken.

Spread across 15 beautiful acres, Still Creek Tree Farm is home to nearly 5,000 trees. The scent of evergreens fills the air and mingles with laughter

and the soft rustle of the wind through the rows of trees. It’s easy to see why this family-owned business has blossomed into one of the most beloved Christmas destinations in the area.

The Shoup family’s journey to creating this winter wonderland began back in February 2010 when Shoup and his wife purchased the property. With no prior farming experience and a background in the military, Shoup found himself at a crossroads, unsure exactly what the land was meant to become. But through prayer, reflection and heartfelt feedback from family and friends, the vision became clear–a Christmas tree farm that could bring joy and tradition to the community.

In 2014 their dream took root, quite literally, as they officially opened Still Creek Tree Farm. That first year they sold just 28 trees, a modest beginning that many might have seen as discouraging. But the Shoups never wavered. They remained steadfast in their faith, trusting that with patience, hard work and love, their vision would flourish. Their perseverance has paid off as the farm now sells hundreds of trees each holiday season and welcomes families from near and far to make memories beneath the boughs.

Beyond the trees themselves, Still Creek offers all the trimmings of holiday magic. Visitors can enjoy hayrides, sip on hot chocolate and even meet a few of the farm’s adorable resident animals who are always eager for attention and affection. Each detail feels carefully crafted to rekindle the childlike joy of Christmas, a place where traditions are born, families laugh together and holiday cheer feels tangible.

For the magazine’s Christmas feature, Still Creek Tree Farm proved to be the perfect setting for a festive photoshoot. Morgan Batton, owner of The Hitch and Tow, embodied the elegance of the season, modeling in exquisite Christmas finery. She was joined by Panda, a breathtaking Gypsy Vanner horse provided by

local trainer Nicola Bolt, adding a touch of equestrian grace to the scene.

As the sun dipped low over the rows of evergreens, golden light washed across the landscape illuminating Batton and Panda in a way that can only be described as magical. The resulting images captured more than just beauty; they encapsulated a feeling. Still Creek Tree Farm, with its charm and faithfilled roots, reminded everyone present of what makes Aiken so special: its people, its spirit and its enduring sense of community.

At Still Creek, Christmas doesn’t just grow on trees; it grows in the hearts of all who visit.

Thank you Beyond Bijoux Aiken for providing the accessories for the photoshoot.

FINANCE TO FIRE

TRADING SPREADSHEETS FOR SMOKE, TURNING PASSION INTO DELICIOUS BARBECUE

For most people, barbecue is a summertime pastime, a chance to gather around the grill with family and friends. For Kurt Mueller, it’s a lifelong passion that started when he was just a kid. Growing up, weekend cookouts were a family affair. His dad was the pitmaster, and Mueller, barely eight or nine years old, was his apprentice. Together they learned the art of smoke, patience and flavor. The lessons weren’t just about food; they were about family, perseverance and taking pride in doing something well.

As Mueller grew older, life took him in a different direction. He built a successful career as a financial planner, guiding others toward stability and success. But even while wearing a suit and tie, the smoke from those childhood cookouts never left him. Barbecue remained in his blood. In 2021 he decided to test his skills on the competition circuit not just as a hobbyist, but as a student of the craft. He refined his techniques, studied every detail and poured his heart into perfecting the balance of smoke, seasoning and tenderness that great barbecue demands.

Then in July 2022 Mueller’s hard work caught national attention when he appeared on the Food Network show BBQ USA , hosted by celebrity chef Michael Symon. The experience was both humbling and exhilarating. Competing alongside some of the country’s best pitmasters confirmed something he had known deep down for years–barbecue wasn’t just a passion; it was his calling.

By January 2023 Mueller found himself at a crossroads. He describes that moment as a “deep conversation with the man in the mirror.” The reflection staring back at him was a man who had achieved professional success but who wasn’t fulfilled. That conversation changed everything. “I realized that financial planning wasn’t what I was passionate about,” Mueller said. “Barbecue was what made me feel alive.”

By September 2023, he made the leap, leaving behind his financial career to pursue his dream full-time. With determination and faith, he invested in his first food trailer, officially launching Ironhead BBQ. The name itself reflects strength and grit, two qualities that have guided him from the beginning. It didn’t take long for the community to take notice. Word spread quickly about the smoky aroma drifting from his trailer and the mouthwatering flavors that followed. Lines grew longer, events booked faster and before long, Ironhead BBQ had

“He refined his techniques, studied every detail and poured his heart into perfecting the balance of smoke, seasoning and tenderness that great barbecue demands.”

become a local sensation. Each plate served was a labor of love: ribs slow-smoked to perfection, brisket so tender it nearly melts and sides that taste like home.

Fueled by that growing demand, Mueller took the next bold step. In August 2025, he opened the doors to his first brickand-mortar restaurant in North Augusta. The space is everything he dreamed it would be: warm, welcoming and filled with the unmistakable scent of smoke. It’s not just a restaurant; it’s the culmination of years of hard work, sacrifice and faith. It’s a place where family recipes meet competition-level craftsmanship, and where every customer feels like part of the Ironhead family.

As the holiday season approaches, Mueller is excited to continue sharing his passion with others. Ironhead now offers catering for corporate gatherings, family celebrations and private events, bringing the flavor of his signature barbecue straight to your table.

Reflecting on his journey, Mueller shared a quote that perfectly captures his story: “Doing this is the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but also the most fulfilling. When you love something, you work harder at it.” Those words embody his spirit, a reminder that the best things in life are earned through passion and persistence.

What began as a boy learning barbecue beside his father has become something much bigger- a thriving business built on heart, smoke and the courage to follow a dream. In a world where comfort often wins over courage, Mueller stands as proof that it’s never too late to chase what truly sets your soul on fire.

“Doing this is the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but also the most fulfilling. When you love something, you work harder at it.”

The celebrations continue with Georgetown’s Christmas Parade along Front Street and the Marsh Walk Santa Crawl in Murrells Inlet—a lively evening of music, laughter and holiday fun. With its blend of artistry, history and coastal charm, the Hammock Coast offers a relaxing and joy-filled holiday escape.
