LIFESTYLE LETTER
Here's To A Healthy New Year! One of the interesting things about publishing a magazine is the way it skews the passage of time. A s I write this letter and put the f inishing touches on our Januar y issue, it is Thanksgiving evening and I can hear my family and friends in animated conversation in the next room. In my work life, Christmas is long over and New Year’s resolutions will have been made and broken before I have a chance to put on the holiday pounds I will resolve to lose in the next year. It is a bit surreal at times. So tonight, instead of succumbing to a turkey coma, I am thinking about my hopes and dreams for next year and whether or not I will have the self-discipline to see them through. Taking on this new business venture in 2022 was an excuse for me to neglect exercise and healthy eating, so I am jumping on the health and wellness bandwagon as soon as the clock strikes midnight. To help all of us in that pursuit, we sought tips and inspiration from several top Aiken trainers. We also took a good look at water aerobics as a low-impact fitness alternative with Max Fitness’ Bonnie Maxwell. Cleanse Gourmet founder, Maggie Rasmussen, gave us some insight into her skincare line that is healthy for your skin and for the environment. We also got a sneak peek at her new retail location. To round out this health and wellness issue, Hawthorne Pharmacy offers some tips for taming your prescription medicines. The new year is a good time to reflect on what worked and what needs work in the upcoming year. Honest reflection is healthy. Beating yourself up for broken resolutions is not. So, take a good look back and celebrate the wins, learn from the losses and move forward. As for me, I will be setting some fitness and business goals that are meaningful and doable in 2023! Happy New Year!

MANAGING MEDICATION MAYHEM ARTICLE BY GAYLE BRYAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY REBECCA WILLIAMS
LOCAL PHARMACY OFFERS SERVICES TO SIMPLIFY MEDICATION MANAGEMENT
Over the years, I have added various and sundry prescriptions to my daily collection. It came to a head recently when I had to break down and purchase a travel dispenser that had slots for both morning and evening meds. If that’s not a sign of advancing age, I am not sure what is! Seriously, managing medication can be a bit overwhelming. It is easy to assume that one’s doctor is keeping track of all potential interactions, but if you see specialists, prescriptions may be written by multiple physicians. It is important to have a relationship with a local pharmacist and to make sure all your prescriptions are filled in one place, so that you have a second pair of eyes looking out for you. Clients of local pharmacist Megan Branham of Hawthorne Pharmacy, are invited to make an appointment and bring all their medications with them. This is the perfect opportunity for the pharmacy staff to look for interactions, dispose of expired medications and consult with patients to make sure they are taking all meds at the right time of day.

Hawthorne also offers medication synchronization, a service that organizes your refills so that you can pick up all of your medications on a single day each month or once every 90 days. That means less trips to the pharmacy and less chance that you get off track with a medication because you forgot to pick up your refill. If you’re like me and find keeping up with what to take when a challenge, Hawthorne will sort and package your medications by dose in a Pill Pack. That eliminates juggling multiple pill bottles and lessens the odds of taking a medication at the wrong time. (Am I the only one who has inadvertently taken my night meds in the morning?) Managing an ever-growing list of prescription medicine is a serious business. Utilizing the professional services of a local pharmacy like Hawthorne can simplify your life and ensure that you only take medications that interact well together.

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY REBECCA WILLIAMS
Cleanse Gourmet: Feed Your Skin AIKEN ENTREPRENEUR, MAGGIE RASMUSSEN, TAKES ON HEALTHY BEAUTY! New year, new you, right? Many of us vow to make changes in our lives with the dawning of the new year. While we often target what we put in our bodies, we also need to consider what we put on our bodies and the products we allow our families to use. Enter Cleanse Gourmet, a beauty brand that uses plant-based, food-grade, gourmet ingredients and focuses on fresh infusions that feed your skin. Maggie Rasmussen, the maker and entrepreneur behind the brand, knows the importance of formulating a product that is healthy for your skin and your body. While many of us search for brands with healthier ingredients, some of us are still uninformed or fall victim to greenwashing (when a company’s products don't live up to its "green" marketing). Whether you shop online or locally at Cleanse Gourmet, you know that everything in the shop is safe and ecoluxe. Maggie notes, “We have strict ingredient standards using only essential oil + botanical powders,

clays, organic and wild crafted, cold pressed oils, to achieve the perfect blend and color that we desire. Products are made 100% in-house in small fresh batches. To preserve our fresh batches, we use green coffee, vitamin E, benzyl alcohol, radish root ferment, banana leaf, honey, rosemary leaf and natural acid blends.” Feeling healthy yet? But what about those of us who are also concerned about the environment and excessive waste? Cleanse Gourmet uses only glass containers and eco-friendly packaging. Maggie encourages her customers to repurpose the glass vessels, “As we are always moving forward in a more sustainable, environmentally friendly direction, we also have a refillable station for organic hand and body wash, made with only essential oils to help reduce waste. You can bring in your decorative bottles to fill, or there are glass bottles available to fill and refill.” They also have a TerraCycle drop-off center for caps and pumps to be recycled. Maggie’s reach with her brand is global. Buyers from both the Terrain/Anthropologie and Magnolia (yes, THAT Magnolia) reached out to her for samples. They stock her line and she has created custom and exclusive products for both brands including exclusive Valentine’s Day, autumn and winter collections. Magnolia carries Maggie’s products online, and in their Vie Bien Amiee bath and body shop at The Silos in Waco, Texas. Terrain carries her products online and in their five stores. Cleanse Gourmet is also in over 250 small boutiques and spas, and internationally, in Canada, Italy, and France. Maggie stresses the importance of shopping and collaborating locally, “All the hard work that we’ve done getting into all of these small boutiques and spas over the last couple of years, really exposed us to a lot of people. I know the buyers saw our products in the smaller boutiques and spas.” Lucky for us, we have Cleanse Gourmet in our backyard. You can visit the retail location at 942 Millbrook Avenue, Suite One, or shop online.

Adam Kato
Palmetto Muay Thai & Kickboxing
Adam "Kato" never set out to become a coach, He sees it as one of the benefits of doing something he’s loved for a very long time. Kato grew up in Australia where his uncle had martial arts schools. He, along with his brother and a bunch of cousins, would pile into the minivan and go train and, according to Kato, cause their fair share of chaos. For those contemplating beginning Muay Thai, Kato points out that there are many reasons to become involved with the sport; to improve cardio fitness, self-defense, boost confidence, or to lose weight and tone up. Kato believes a coach should be able to perform, or at least could once perform, everything they ask of their students. There is nothing he asks of his students he hasn’t done many times over. At 48, Kato is still dedicated to his own training. He doesn’t let age stand in his way, but sees it as a motivator. He feels that once bitten by the Muay Thai bug, it can lead to a lifelong passion that only becomes more addictive as you improve. Kato also points out that the longer most people have been involved in martial arts, the humbler they become. He loves watching the character it builds in a student. “I honestly can't imagine life without it and love to see the passion grow in my students,” he says. One of Kato's hobbies is riding horses. Two passions in his life growing up were horses and martial arts. One of his first jobs was training horses. Having experience with training people and horses, he wouldn’t say which was easier, but playfully remarked that one of the two doesn’t tell lies. Kato also practices yoga and began running during the pandemic and stresses both go hand in hand with martial arts. He sees these activities as a crucial part of Muay Thai. Without them, a student will no longer continue becoming a well-rounded 'nak muay' (student of Muay Thai).
“Nothing motivates more than seeing results, and if that’s not happening then everyone’s time and efforts are being wasted.” - Adam Kato, Palmetto Muay Thai & Kickboxing

Jaiyviah’s athletic journey began with gymnastics at the age of five. She advanced all the way up to level 10. Though a knee injury ended her gymnastics career, she still found herself wanting to work out and stay physically fit. About a year ago, Jaiyviah was looking for something she could incorporate into her routine other than weightlifting and stumbled upon Pilates. She embraced Pilates training and was eventually approached to become an instructor. She was already teaching gymnastics, so she felt that adding a Pilates certification to her resume was the next move. Jaiyviah has always wanted to see people be the best they could be, physically, emotionally and spiritually. When asked for a motivation tip for readers, she advised, “Take it one step, one moment, one day at a time! It’s honestly the small things that are going to add up to get the results you want. You don’t have to start going to the gym three days a week, because you aren’t going to stay committed to that. Start with one day, then the next month try to do two days a week. Soon you will be going four days a week!” When not at Club Pilates, Jaiyviah still stays active through lifting and squats. She still enjoys going for an open gym session at CNC gymnastics where you may see her on the swing bars or doing routines on the floor including twisting or flipping!

Hope Menjares Workout Anytime
While in high school, a coach of Hope's took the time to teach her the rights and wrongs of lifting. Not only did he show her the correct method, he taught her the reasons why, rather than expecting her to blindly follow suit. He showed concern for her overall well-being and helped her progress without injuring herself or becoming discouraged. This inspired her to show others that same care and encouragement. She loves to help explain exercises in different ways that make it easier for others to learn, and to help others feel confident in their own skin, physically and mentally. Hope stresses, "You are your biggest critic. No one notices the small things that you may notice. Become your biggest fan and the rest will fall into place! You have to believe in yourself just as much as the people that love you do.” Outside of the gym, Hope loves to hike with her husband and dogs. With the exception of spiders, she enjoys being out on the trails. In addition to being very relaxing, hiking helps her stay active on her weekends away from the gym.
Justin Strickland
South Aiken Physical Therapy
Justin’s inspiration to become a personal trainer grew from a genuine love for helping other people move from where they are to where they want to be. He understands that exercise has a profound effect on many facets of the body, not just the physical, and he loves sharing that with other people. When asked about his training philosophy, Justin stated, "Don’t look for motivation. That’s like ocean tides. It comes, it goes. Look for commitment. Commit to the process. Once you’ve built enough momentum behind your commitment, then you’ve reached discipline and the rest is history!" Outside of his gym routine, Justin enjoys physical labor. He volunteers in his free time to help those in need with physically demanding projects. He also enjoys taking his dog for walks.

Explore the Benefits of Water Aerobics with Bonnie Maxwell
30
G E T ACT IV E | HEA LTH + W E LLNE S S
JUST ADD WATER ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY GAYLE BRYAN
It might be easy to dismiss water aerobics as an activity best suited for senior adults. Visiting one of instructor Bonnie Maxwell’s classes at Max Fitness in Aiken will quickly disavow you of that notion. Her senior adults do thrive in her high-energy/low-impact classes, as do the diverse group of women and men of all ages that are in the pool with them. The benefits of water aerobics are hard to ignore. Because of the wonderful resistance of water, moving an aerobic workout to the pool not only increases cardiovascular fitness and burns calories, but also builds strength, tones muscle and improves balance and stability. According to Bonnie, the resistance of the water is somewhat equivalent to lifting weights. And, all the benefits of water aerobics come without the wear and tear to the joints experienced with traditional land-based aerobic classes. That helps explain the appeal to older adults as well as individuals rehabilitating from
injury and anyone whose joints could live without the pounding they might get on the pavement or in other high-impact activities. Bonnie sees water aerobics as a well-rounded program for overall good health. In addition to the physical benefits, her students see a positive contribution to their mental well-being. Her classes are fun and there is a social aspect to working out in the pool with your friends that continues out of the water. Bonnie’s students do lunch together once a month and plan special holiday and birthday celebrations. The new year might be the perfect time to try a new workout with all the benefits of water aerobics. Max Fitness offers morning and evening classes throughout the week. You might even find yourself in a class with Bonnie Maxwell and her fantastic students. If you are sold on the water, but not sure about the aerobics piece, Max Fitness keeps a swim lane open even during aerobic classes.
