Here we are! It is finally summer and we are seeing the world in its most vibrant color. The sun is beaming and the flowers are beautiful. The Constantine House known for the historic beauty that it is, was built in 1935 by a Greek architect named Augustus Edison Constantine. Constantine had completed design projects in Atlanta before going on to design many more buildings in Charleston. The Constantine House is one of Aiken’s truly fine homes. The house was built with 14 rooms offering beautiful millwork and hardwood floors. The first floor, alone, offers formal sitting and dining rooms, a library, game room, breakfast room, kitchen and several pantries. While the second floor features five bedrooms and a screened loggia with red tile flooring. The home very much still holds these feats but with a restored touch. The back of the house has a 30x60 red tile terrace with wrought iron railing and stone urns, sat on six acres of landscaped land.

The house was home to a few names you might recognize, including Strom Thurmond and his family, and is now owned by Aiken resident, Cody Anderson, who owns and operates Aiken’s historic George Funeral Home. Cody firmly believes in community involvement and serves on several boards and committees. It is his passion and obligation to give back what has been given to him. And he will go on to do exactly that. Anderson mentioned that, growing up in Aiken around the Constantine House, he always saw the house as mysterious. With his favorite superhero being Batman, he saw the historic house as Wayne Manor, this intriguing and mysterious residence that no one knew much about. When he purchased the property, he planned to not disrupt the historical aspects of the house but to honor the work that Constantine brought to Aiken.

Anderson, instead, focused his attention on restoring what needed to be fixed and paying more attention to places that needed a little love. Along with the home being restored, the home is more alive than ever. Anderson often hosts charitable events and entertains for the Aiken community. His long-term plan is to transition the home to USCA, when he passes, to become the Chancellor’s residence. Therefore, enabling the university to recruit talent and give the Chancellor a place to entertain and fundraise for the university. The Constantine House holds so much local history and Anderson has preserved the life of this historic home in all of its splendor. So, next time you're driving down Richland Avenue make sure you glance at this beauty!

Twin brothers Brent and Brad Chavis, owners of Sunshine Pressure Washing, have worked together for over 30 years to restore and refresh spaces to their original look and intent. After sitting down to chat with Brent Chavis, I noticed one of three things. He is a sincere man, full of integrity and humility. These features can be rare finds in successful individuals. After laying the groundwork for doing the right thing for 25-26 years, Brent reminisced about something his dad taught him and his brother growing up. Isaac Kelly from Aiken Staffing was born and raised in Aiken County, went to school in North Augusta, went to college across the river, and has been with Aiken Staffing and sister companies for sixteen years. Before this, he served in the U.S. Army National Guard from 1999 to 2003. Then had a streamline of jobs from hospitality to corporate to an assistant food and beverage manager for different companies before officially joining the Aiken Staffing team. His late mother owned the business before him and he continues to make his businesses a family affair with his twin brother, Robert. Kelly started working with all three sister companiesAiken Staffing, Augusta Staffing, and Job Shop, to mainstream their processes and push for paperless until he was titled vice president of all three companies. Aiken Staffing is a full-service employment agency focused on temporary to hire or direct hire employment opportunities and offering contract work and payrolling services. Being locally owned and operated, they work a lot in the industrial sector and office, clerical, medical, IT, and legal offices. They also work with all municipalities in the area, the county, and the state of South Carolina. Aiken Staffing has been in Aiken for 43 years. It was the first brick-and-mortar staffing agency in Aiken. They rented out an office off of Silver Bluff for a couple of years, then moved over
to a locally-owned building for almost 15 years before settling where they are now on Millbrook Avenue, 10-12 years ago. When asked if there were any resources, tools, or advice Isaac Kelly could offer to those starting a business, he suggested, "Create your support group. You're not going to do it alone." Kelly mentioned that often the most challenging steps to starting a business involve people. He said that finding people to go in the right seats is essential because people who know what they are doing are great. Still, they can also be cancer to your group, which can destroy a business, so be wise and intentional when filling spots. He mentioned that getting support around you is vital for growing your business. After owning the business for some time, one of Kelly's focus points was refreshing the building to its most significant potential. The building got a facelift, which included a new roof, a new HVAC system, new flooring, and fresh paint, amongst other things, but the atmosphere of the building changed as well. One of the most significant shifts was rebuilding a team from the ground up. Like many businesses, the pandemic did its damage, but Aiken Staffing is still standing tall in all its glory, helping the community in any way that it can.
