LIFESTYLE LETTER

Hello Aiken!

May 2022 PUBLISHER

Jacqueline Bailey Jacqueline.bailey@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR

It is finally May! The flowers have bloomed and we are living in full color again! I don't know about you but there is something so refreshing about the vibrant colors of nature on a warm day. There is so much to do outdoors. Whether it is basking in the sun, talking a walk, having a picnic, or going for an afternoon swim, the possibilities are endless! Wherever you find yourself, enjoy the outdoors while it is here. This month's issue is our "Ladies' Issue." I thought what a great time to celebrate women than to highlight women-run or women-owned businesses. So, as you flip through and marvel at these phenomenal women crushing it in the world of business, be encouraged as you read their inspiring stories. Liz tells us that sometimes you can offer a solution to the problem. Three Star shows us, if you build a loving community in your staff, your business and customers will be marked by that love. Aiken Choral Society reflects that there is beauty in longevity and faithfulness. Karen reminds us that it is never too late to make your dreams, a reality. I hope you enjoy this issue. It is a special one!

Aiken Choral Society

“Sing Out America” ARTICLE BY JASMIN GARRARD | PHOTOGRAPHY BY AIKEN CHORAL SOCIETY

14

B ACK STAGE | A RTS + CULTURE

As The Aiken Choral Society celebrates their 50th year anniversary, we wanted to go back in time and shine a light on how far they have come. Maureen Simpson serves as the creative musical director. Simpson has been a part of the society for 15 years but has always known about it. She is an Aiken local. She has been a performer for most of her life, so there is a sense of safety and understanding that she brings to her singers. Simpson lived in Wisconsin for some time until the music director of her church retired and was in need of someone to come in and fill the space. It turned out to be a pretty steady gig. She eventually took a hiatus to work on her doctorate and take care of her mother. Then her teaching at Georgia Southern began where she taught voice and opera. Then a job opened up at St. Mary’s and finally the Aiken Choral Society director retired and she took it with fervor. Simpson believes that music is music and a gift is a gift, it is meant to be given away. She often asks the question, “How can we make music become a conduit into other cultures and other experiences and other lives?” Her goal is this, to then in turn educate people without forcing it upon them, but by the renewing that happens through experiencing one’s hardship and joy through song and emotion. This concert is titled, “Sing Out America.” It begins with what we knew as the first national anthem, the vice president’s

walk-out song. Then introduces a song about the civil war on through the major movements and moments of America – suffragette songs, 1960’s protest songs, war songs, etc. All of these songs are a part of American history, a part of what makes America, America. This concert serves as a representation of every part of the American experience. Simpson believes this is how we are connected, through our music. Her purpose for the Aiken Choral Society music selection is to get people to relate, but also to expose people the music they otherwise would not have been exposed to or even to write off. She aims to expose those who attend to as many cultures and utter diversity as possible. In this, she is very much about stretching people’s ideas to look outside their “norm” to be able to appreciate music they have never heard, while also finding music that is not quite so delineated. Thus so, the Aiken Choral Society would love to invite you to their spring concert, “Sing Out America” on May 15th at 4pm, at Aiken’s First Baptist Church, 120 Chesterfield St. N. Celebrating their 50th year, the Aiken Choral Society will walk through the history of America, through her songs, accompanied by David Brown and directed by Dr. Maureen Simpson. The concert is free to the public, but donations are welcomed.

It all started with a plot of land that soon turned into the largest growers and shippers of muscadine and scuppernong grapes in South Carolina. Ann Hutchins and her husband bought the farm in 1992 and sold it to their son eleven years ago. Three Star has been in the family for 30 years now and is a family-owned, women-run business – the entire staff is women and it is managed and run by women. The vineyard was wholesale only for about 28 years until their loyal customers encouraged them to open up their building as a tasting room and a place to enjoy their wine with friends. Thus leading Three Star to expand. They converted their original cooler and breezeway into a tasting room large enough for the largest of gatherings. Meanwhile, the vineyard spans over 175 acres of grapes, muscadines, and scuppernongs. Everything is hand-picked, hand-packed, and grown by hand, there is no machinery involved. Three Star Vineyard seeks to encourage and empower local businesses, especially those owned by women. With Three Star not being a winery, they ship off their grapes to local partners in South Carolina to make wine out of Three Star’s berries. Three Star opened a gift shop in August of 2019 that is filled with products created by women-owned businesses. Their approach is to treat their employees and customers like family. They have a wide variety of loyal patrons due to their amazing customer service and quality products. Three Star Vineyard & Orchard is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. They offer wine tastings, hand-crafted in-house wine slushies, wines and beers, non-alcoholic drinks as well as light food options. Three Star entertains baby showers, bridal showers, birthdays, and anniversaries during the day as well as having the option to rent for private parties during the night. The vineyard is open for rental venues for private events. Food Truck Friday Nights happen every last Friday of the month, April through October, with great entertainment from bands scheduled and yummy food trucks. Gates open at 6 pm and the event starts around 6:30 pm. When you go, make sure you try their new Fudgesicle wine slushie. It tastes like a chocolate frosty! Next time you are looking for something to do on a Friday night, Three Star Vineyard and Orchard would love to have your family join them for Food Truck Friday on the last Friday of every month!

“Last year God told me to step away from what I was doing and become the solution to the problem I was seeing. So I left my previous job in September of 2021 and got my LLC and started my business, full-time.”

From Music education major to behavioral therapist for autistic children to beside nursing to launching her own business called, “That’s My Nurse.” Liz Walker can just about do it all. She is a South Carolina native passionate about helping people better understand what is going on with their health. Walker desired to do something about the problem she was seeing in healthcare. “Last year God told me to step away from what I was doing and become the solution to the problem I was seeing. So I left my previous job in September of 2021 and got my LLC and started my business, fulltime.” She started in September of 2021 and got her first client at the beginning of November of 2021. Walker’s services include personalized programs to help her clients better manage their health and the conditions they may have. She has a Concierge Health and Wellness Program, which is a personalized program to the client and their needs. She usually has clients of the 65 year and older age where the level of health literacy is 3% and they are not always able to understand what they are diagnosed with. Walker is a strong believer in, “If you are living with a condition, you should know it as well as the doctor does.” The program knows their health conditions, medications, and ordered diet. As well it just overall helps them better understand their condition. She also serves as an advocate for her clients when they visit their doctor, by going along with them to their appointments, whether is it to help them remember new information or questions they may have had prior to the appointment. Walker serves as a liaison between the doctor and the patient. She also checks vitals to take with them to the doctors office to get a better read for the doctors; in case they stray from their average vital signs because of anxiety or any other factors. They serve as an extension of Primary Care Physicians. She also created a comprehensive care plan with attainable goals to incentivize and celebrate with them to encourage them to do what will help them deal better with their condition. Care Coordination Services are offered as well, this is where they chart their health care alongside scheduling appointments and keeping them on top of them. Lastly she offers nurse consultations. This is to help clients figure out what is going on, ask questions that a nurse can help with, and also advise them if they need to seek other care. Ultimately, Liz Walker is focused on patient-centered healthcare. Her goal is to empower people to take charge of their own health, to know that they have the patient’s bill of rights and to advocate for themselves. If you know anyone who would benefit from knowing and being in touch with Liz, she is available and waiting for you to call.

Megan Mendez HOME CARE FOR SENIORS & SENIOR DAYCARE

Megan Mendez is a trained nurse practitioner who has been in the medical field for 15 years and has worked with seniors for 8 years. She got into home care for seniors around 2020, closely following the pandemic, then purchased the daycare in 2021. She also owns a company called "Housecalls of Augusta" where she offers medical house calls for patients who may be unable to leave their house. Megan has a passion for helping people get the care they need and deserve. She owns a home care business for seniors, as well as a daycare for seniors, and what sets them apart is that they are nurseowned and operated businesses. Megan noticed a strain in financial provision for home care which is what sparked her to begin this daycare. She is very relational and compassionate with her clients, wanting them to trust her and build a safe place for them. Megan and her staff are excited to bring East Cooper Senior Daycare to Aiken County in Summer of 2022! Help us welcome these friendly faces to Aiken County this summer.
