LIFESTYLE LETTER
Happy Valentine’s Day, Aiken! Art comes in many different forms, and it gives us a glimpse of someone’s heart—a part of them we don’t see on the surface. We are all drawn to various expressions of art in different ways, and we tend to appreciate artistic expression that makes us feel something and that resonates with us. I have always admired the vast creativity that artisans of all kinds pour into their craftsmanship. Our February issue is dedicated to sharing about local products, makers and artists in our area. As you read about a few local artisans in our community and their stories of passion and self-expression, we hope you are inspired to pursue what you love. After all, February is the month of love. With the hectic schedules we often keep, it is easy to let our hobbies, talents and special interests fall by the wayside. We just have to be deliberate about allowing ourselves time to pour into interests that we love and that fill us up. So, while you fill your home with chocolates, flowers and valentines (and perhaps college basketball) this month, remember to give yourself some time to do what you love. Find what makes you feel alive, and don’t forget to share it with us. And while you are at it, don’t forget to shop local and support our local makers and artists right here in our community.

Katherine Slayton has an eye for design. With the right tools, she can create anything from beautiful bouquets to statues of animals made of flowers. Her love for florals comes from her father, who owned a flower shop in North Carolina. “Dad opened a flower shop as a retirement project after working for FTD for twentyseven years and called me to help him one weekend. I told him that I didn’t know what to do but I would come help him. I ended up having the time of my life,” says Katherine. “I got to know my dad in a way I’d never known him before. He was always going to the office when I was a kid growing up, so I didn’t know that he was a talented floral designer.” After Katherine’s father passed away, she bought the business from her mother. Twelve years later, Katherine sold the business and began a career in the assisted living industry. “I didn’t realize I would still be working nights and weekends like I had been doing in the floral business,” says Katherine. After fifteen years, Katherine decided to retire out of assisted living. “I quickly learned that I was not the kind of person to just sit at home and do nothing. So, I decided to open up my flower shop, Katherine By Design,” she shares.
“When I do my work, I try to incorporate things that my dad trained and taught me. I took myself to several design schools just to make sure that I was well rounded in my skills and abilities.” One of Katherine’s favorite things about what she does is seeing the element of surprise on people’s faces when she delivers her florals. “There are a lot of intrinsic rewards that make you feel good inside about what you do. Even if it’s a funeral piece, you’re doing something that’s going to have long lasting meaning for somebody,” says Katherine. ‘When I opened Katherine By Design, my goal was to bring some new things to the community using an artistic approach to florals. I’ve really been having a good time with it,” says Katherine. Katherine can help you with all your floral needs. She provides florals for weddings, parties, funerals, private home decorating, bouquets, and more! Call her today at 803-335-9089 or email her at katherinebydesign@outlook.com. Visit Katherine at her country home setting to shop spring and summer plants such as hanging baskets and rose bushes at 1178 Wire Rd, Aiken, SC 29805.

RHETT WALKER, NATIVE TO AIKEN, IS A CHRISTIAN SINGER AND SONGWRITER
ERIC BROWN PHOTOGRAPHY, STILLMAN PHOTOGRAPHY Rhett Walker, a Christian singer and songwriter, is a native of the CSRA. Both he and his wife April grew up in the Aiken area. “We just moved back to the CSRA from Nashville three years ago. All of our family lives out here,” says Rhett. He and his wife have four kids, Rileigh, Jett, Autumn, and Cash. They homeschool their children and love to travel. “I have wanted to do music since I was young. I would stand in front of the mirror playing guitar and pretend that I was on stage,” says Rhett. He would also lead worship at churches on Sundays and Wednesdays trying to make ends meet by doing music. “One day my mom said,

‘If you wanted to be a surfer, you’d move to the ocean. Maybe you should move to Nashville.’ So my wife, both of our kids, and I packed up and moved to Nashville,” says Rhett. After two years, Rhett had signed a deal and put out his first single, When Mercy Found Me, which was nominated for a Grammy. “The reason I do what I do is that I’ve seen redemption in mine and April’s story,” says Rhett. “We were teenagers having babies and this coming July will be our 18th anniversary. It’s a reminder that nothing is impossible. We get in the way of ourselves all the time or we try to slow down what God’s plans may be for us.” “My last single is Gospel Song, where I sing about hearts being set free and that happiness, joy, and peace - the only kind that will sustain you - comes from Jesus. The world is looking for that, but we know where it really comes from. I’ve always wanted to be the blue-collar artist and remind people that there’s joy out there to be found,” says Rhett. Rhett’s newest single, All Joy No Stress, is now available on the Gospel Song - EP. He says that All Joy No Stress is a reminder for him and his wife. In 2020, everything was canceled, “All my shows and tours were canceled. It felt like everything was taken from us,” shares Rhett. “We felt like we really needed to put things in gear and I was bringing up the old saying ‘all gas, no brake’. The more we thought about it, we decided that that’s no way to live either. We wanted to look at the silver lining, we were back home and with our family. So instead of all gas, no brake, we want to try to live all joy, no stress.” CONTINUED > FEB R UARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E. C O M / A I KE N

Sweet Treat Table Surprise your children with a sweet treat table. Keep it simple with a few favorite snacks and candies, or for a more extravagant display, use fresh flowers and create a handmade centerpiece. To achieve this look, start by placing the largest greenery on the bottom layer in a circle around the table. Next layer varying types of greenery on top of the first layer in shorter widths to achieve the final look. Next add Valentine’s Day mini cupcakes, chocolate dipped Oreos, and Valentine’s Day cookies for an inviting sweet treat table. Valentine Tree To create this easy and eye-catching centerpiece, collect fallen branches and paint them white. We used a thrifted, repurposed white ceramic jar to assemble the branches in for the base. Use a floral foam to stabilize the branches, and place moss at the top of the jar. You can use this homemade tree for any occasion as it’s sturdy, and just about anything can be hung on it. Valentine’s Day Ornaments Create heart ornaments to hang on your Valentine Tree Centerpiece. cards for a kids Valentine’s Day scavenger hunt. Instruct children to find their picture on the tree and hunt for the hidden treasure in the house. We used recycled shipping boxes to create the heart base and painted them red. We then used a hole punch to create a lace-like edge to complete the look.

creative planning for your future ARTICLE BY ALLISON SWAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES
Creative Planning believes there’s a richer way to wealth. Their team of CFP professionals, CPAs and attorneys work together to create clear customized plans to maximize your wealth, all in one place. Their award-winning in-house services span a variety of financial disciplines, including comprehensive wealth and investment management, insurance, tax prep, trusts, estate, financial and retirement planning. Founded in Overland Park, they have since branched out across the globe, gaining a national reputation that has earned them numerous prestigious awards, including #1 wealth management firm in America by Barron’s, CNBC and Forbes. President and CEO Peter Mallouk shares his wealth of knowledge with approachable financial advice. “I was born and raised in Kansas City,” says Mallouk. “When we started Creative Planning in 2004, I never thought we would get the instantaneous reception that we did. It took off on day one and never stopped. Being based in Kansas City was quite by accident, but staying has been very
intentional. We have so many wonderful, educated people in the region and we are centrally located, allowing us to serve clients coast to coast. This has worked out well for us given some of our largest client bases are in California, New York, Florida, Texas and Illinois. We now have about 1,000 employees with offices in dozens of states serving tens of thousands of clients across the country. We couldn’t be better situated to serve our clients.” Two issues coming together at once inspired the creation of Mallouk’s business. “My dad was a physician frustrated with his financial advisor who sold him products and didn’t really explain things well, and I was an estate attorney that saw a full view of the advisory world and thought there was a better way to deliver the all around experience. Ultimately, that led to Creative Planning offering investments and planning as well as legal and tax advice in a very approachable, consultative way.” CONTINUED >

Mallouk has written several books, including 5 Mistakes Every Investor Makes and How to Avoid Them, and has cowritten Unshakeable: Your Financial Freedom Playbook and The Path: Accelerating Your Journey to Financial Freedom with Tony Robbins. “People are generally fearful of investment and feel the market is too low or too high at any given time. When there is a correction (a drop of 10% or more), people generally stay on the sidelines or sell their stocks, fearing the market may collapse and stay lower—there have been over 100 corrections, usually about one per year, and they have all ended with a full recovery. Some of these corrections turn into bear markets, a drop of 20% or more, and all have ended with a full recovery. On the other end of the spectrum, many are worried about investing when the market is at an all time high. This is actually completely normal and happens about once every nineteen days—in other words, all the time! We aren’t surprised when a Hershey’s bar, box of cereal or ticket to Disney World costs more, but somehow are shocked when the market hits an all time high. It’s normal, and inflation has a lot to do with it.” For those with a 401(k), Mallouk says to do everything you can to contribute. “Some 401(k) plans have an employer match, meaning for every dollar you put into the 401(k), the company will match—it usually applies to the first 3 %. I t’s a g uaranteed 1 00% r ate o f r eturn, and there is just nothing else you can do that is going to be as good as that. If you have the ability to contribute the max do that as well, but for sure take advantage of the match.” When faced with the choice to either invest or pay off debts first, Ma llouk says to st art with focusing on the interest rate. “All debts aren’t created equal—if you have credit card debt where you are paying 10% or more in interest, then paying off the debt before doing anything else other than a 401(k) match is the way to go. If your only debt is a home mortgage at 2-4% or so, then investing over a long period of time is very likely to yield you a far better outcome than making extra debt payments.” Life insurance and its role with investing has been a hot topic of financial p lanning. W hile Mallouk believes it’s a terrible investment, he believes it’s a necessity.

“We are planning led, meaning we get to know our clients very well prior to giving them advice. All our portfolios are customized to help clients accomplish their goals, rather than being constructed based on age or risk tolerance.”
“The best purpose for life insurance is the reason it was originally created: to provide money to loved ones if you die. Buy a simple, inexpensive life insurance policy which lasts for a term, say 10 or 20 years. Find out what your family needs to live a quality life if you are gone, and insure for that amount. This best fits families that don’t have enough in investments set aside to maintain a lifestyle in the event of the loss of a breadwinner, which is most people under age 60. Life insurance can also make sense when it comes to estate planning for the wealthy. Life insurance as an investment though is a terrible idea and not a good way to invest for future retirement goals.” When planning an estate, it’s crucial to have a healthcare and financial power of attorney and a will or trust. “A healthcare power of attorney names someone to make healthcare decisions for you in the event you can’t make them for yourself. A financial power of attorney names someone to make financial decisions for you if you can’t for yourself. Lastly a will or a trust both name who will handle things for you in the event of your death, and who will oversee and inherit your assets. Trusts tend to make more sense for wealthier individuals as it can bypass the probate court system, which keeps things private, allows for a faster transfer of assets after death, and because it skips the court system, settling the estate is much less expensive.” When looking for a financial advisor, find the right one by asking the right questions. “Most don’t realize that the vast majority of financial advisors don’t have to act in the client’s best interests. A minority of financial advisors are fiduciaries and operate under laws that share similarities with doctors and lawyers, meaning they do have to act in their client’s best interests. First, ask your advisor if they are registered as a broker or are dually registered. If they say yes to either, that means that part or all of the time, they don’t have to act in your best interests. There are thousands of advisors CONTINUED > FEB R UARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E. C O M / A I KE N

“It’s an exciting time—we can do more for our clients today than at any point in our history. In many ways, it feels like we are just at the starting line.”
that will act in your best interest, so take the time to find one. Second, ask your advisor if their parent company, or the ownership of their parent company, own investment vehicles. If the answer is yes, don’t be surprised if some of those investment vehicles find their way into your portfolio. Essentially you may find yourself paying an advisor to then put you in a fund where the company collects another fee. There is no need to accept this conflict. Find a fiduciary that is not dually registered and that does not own their own investment products. At that point, you at least have someone that is incented to act on your behalf all the time. From there, look for education, credentials and experience with people like you.” Creative Planning’s approach to private wealth management sets them apart from the rest. “Our clients have been our greatest allies and have really helped us grow our practice. I attribute that to the quality of our people, that we don’t own any investment products so clients know we are never trying to sell them an investment. We are always on their side of the table. I also think our clients really appreciate how far we will go to solve their problems, especially because we have the specialists to handle most issues in-house.” Managing approximately $100 billion in assets, this leading independent firm attributes its success to putting pieces together that people were desperately looking for. “First, people want a fiduciary, a strong team and are looking for experience. Second, we are planning led, meaning we get to know

our clients very well prior to giving them advice. Third, all our portfolios are customized to help clients accomplish their goals, rather than being constructed based on age or risk tolerance. We have seen a lot of investment success with our clients, and that goes a long way. Fourth, we were the industry pioneer and still the industry leader in delivering the family office to clients, giving them advice and implementation across all their key financial needs, from investments to planning and from legal to tax. Finally and most importantly, we have been very successful at attracting and retaining the best in the business. This is a people business and having the best people is key to delivering the best advice.” As for the future, it’s never looked brighter at Creative Planning. “It’s an exciting time—we can do more for our clients today than at any point in our history. CON FEDERATE MEMORIAL PAR K See history come alive with cannons, cavalry horses and living history experts. For three days, reenactors eat, sleep, live and fight in a painfully recreated version of the world in 1865. This War Between the States event has grown from a few hundred men with muskets to a full-blown Civil War festival. In addition to battle reenactments, there are authentic 19th-century military encampments, living history presentations, reproductions of medical facilities, an engineer and signal service, and civilian portrayals.
