It seems the holiday season gets longer every year. Christmas merchandise has been gracing the shelves of our favorite retailers for weeks and Hallmark Christmas movies started airing before Halloween. Let’s pause for a minute before we go full blown Ho, Ho, Ho, to enjoy everything November has to offer including a time of Thanksgiving. There is much to be grateful for if you live in Aiken and in this issue we get to know some Aikenites who donate their time, talent and treasure to make Aiken a better place to live for everyone. We are fortunate to have so many organizations that exist to help others in Aiken. This month we were inspired by the great work Great Oak Equine Assisted Programs does to enhance the physical, emotional, and psychological health of individuals with special needs through equine-assisted services. As Thanksgiving approaches, I am very thankful for the traditions my husband and I established early in our family that still resonate with our children and bring them home for the holidays. Even in those years when we were struggling to navigate the tumultuous teen years and our kids were at each other’s throats, our family always gathered around the holiday table with great anticipation for THE MEAL. It had to be THE MEAL - baked turkey (not fried or smoked), stuffing, green bean casserole (topped with cheese), rice, gravy, strawberry pretzel salad, and pumpkin, apple and chocolate cream pies. No experimentation or deviation from THE Meal was or is acceptable even now that my kids are adults. Full disclosure, my husband does most of the heavy lifting for THE MEAL and is delighted to do so just as long as the kids keep coming home. I hope Thanksgiving finds you gathered around a table with those you love. Enjoy because as soon as the dishes are done, it’s off to the races! Happy Thanksgiving!

The Fra g rance of Fa l l Tee Gee Goodes brings uniquely curated scent profiles to your home just in time for the holidays.

The leaves are turning, the temperature finally has a slight chill, and the aroma of fall is in the air. What exactly defines the aroma of fall and can it be captured? On a cool Thursday, at the beginning of the season, we visited the studio of Tee Gee Goodes to find out. Tee Gee Goodes is a clean ingredient candle and home scent brand that has taken our community by storm. If you haven’t seen her on Instagram or in a local boutique yet, you will soon. Taylor Gass-Oster is the genius behind Tee Gee Goodes and was more than happy to share the scents and secrets of her fall line of candles, wax melts and room refresher sprays (that are skin safe), just in time to get our homes ready for the holidays. Soufflé is new to Taylor’s fall collection. She selected the name because it sounds very luxurious. She studied recipes and the ultimate result is a pumpkin marshmallow scent that smells like you have a fall soufflé baking in the oven, without the effort or calories! Ember, one of Taylor's favorites, brings to mind a fall bonfire night. Its scent notes are amber, charred wood, vanilla and smoke. This is an awesome scent to burn not only in the house, but outside on your patio on fall evenings. Its sophisticated woodsy element mixed with the vanilla is brilliant. New Salem's bewitching spice scent is an homage to Taylor's memories of the New Salem fair in north Georgia as a child. Last is Wilde Roots. Its scent notes are dew, vetiver, thyme, amber resin, and petitgrain. Taylor's favorite way to enjoy Wilde Roots is to blend one Soufflé melt with two Wilde Roots melts. Taylor explains, “Soufflé + Wilde Roots is your husband taking you to the pumpkin patch and taking the perfect selfie. You’re living your best life!” Taylor, a third generation crafter, calls on her memories of what the holidays and seasons lend to our sense of smell to curate a warm and inviting atmosphere in your home. The Tee Gee Goodes studio is on the lower level of August & House in the historic Edgefield town square, It was beautifully restored by Larry and William Miller. Her studio's neutral colors, along with the faint folk music playing in the background provide a calming environment for Taylor to create. Taylor quit her nine-to-five job as a graphic designer in 2021 to live out her dream of entrepreneurship. She is now crafting blends that we can enjoy and feel safe using around our families. She uses soy and coconut wax with cotton wicks. Her first scents were Haus and Salt, which frankly are what successful peoples’ homes smell like; that "put together" sophistication we all strive to exude. Their distinct formula is elegant and potent at the same time. Next came Hygge (Taylor's go-to) which is literally the Danish word for cozy. There have been many more including Sweet Bread, which she says is inspired by her grandmother's baking, and French Press which smells more like coffee than your favorite coffee shop. FOR T H E HOLI DAYS ASHLEY ELVIS AND CASEY YOUNG CREATE FABULOUS FOOD BOARDS TO SPICE UP ANY HOLIDAY GATHERING The first few weeks of November represent the calm before the storm officially known as the holiday season. Let’s face it, once Thanksgiving hits, it is total chaos until New Year’s Day. In addition to the decorating, the shopping, the baking and the cooking of huge holiday meals, there are the parties. There are many, many parties of all different shapes and sizes including office get-togethers, church potlucks, classroom celebrations, extracurricular activity parties and other festive gatherings of family and friends. We love to celebrate as much as the next guy, but sometimes finding the time to prepare something delectable for each occasion can be a bit overwhelming. Anticipating we would need help, we reached out to our talented friends, Casey Young and Ashley Elvis. As co-owners of Board in Aiken, they make their living crafting beautiful charcuterie and specialty boards that really know how to party! We tasked them with creating unique boards to help carry us through three different holiday gatherings. They were up to the challenge and their creations grace the pages of this spread. If you assumed that boards were limited to charcuterie, the Crudité Board will quickly disabuse you of that notion. It is a colorful combination of fresh veggies, hummus and a spinach artichoke dip that will shine at an office party or as a healthy side for a holiday meal. Christmas morning is best spent enjoying gift giving and precious time with family, not preparing breakfast and making a huge mess that will have to be cleaned up before starting the real cooking for the day. Enter the Breakfast Board. It is a delightful spread of Belgian waffles and pancakes with all the toppings, including chocolate chips, syrup, marshmallows, whipped cream, two jams, and butter, rounded out with candied bacon and mini cinnamon rolls. The last entry is perfect for the kids to take to a party at school or for teenagers to enjoy with a movie upstairs while the adults have a party of their own. The Movie Board has both the sweet and salty covered with regular and caramel popcorn, fresh fruit, brownies, chocolate-covered pretzels and all the candies chocolate and sugary. CONTINUED >

OVERCOMING ADVERSITY We recently visited Great Oak Equine Assisted Programs in search of some inspiration as we enter the season of giving. Located just North of Downtown Laurens Street, Great Oak provides equine assisted activities that promote the physical, emotional, and psychological health of individuals with special needs on a picturesque 44-acre farm. Kaleb came to Great Oak to overcome something we can all relate to: social anxiety and depression. Making the courageous decision to embrace his fears brought him to the beautiful and serene farm where his path crossed with Eva Finnan, the Program Director at Great Oak. Eva is a PATH International Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor and has worked closely with Kaleb since he started riding with Great Oak. Eva exudes warmth and from the moment you meet her the respect she has for her students and her horses is evident. Her teaching and therapeutic philosophy centers on the connection between rider and horse. Riders, like Kaleb, who can find communication with people difficult, sometimes find it easier to connect with a horse as a first step.

This practice gives him the confidence to communicate with others even when he is away from Great Oak. Eva is very passionate when she talks about the empathetic quality of horses, “They are such sentient beings. They pick up on the energy of each rider and adjust themselves accordingly.” Eva has proven to her riders and their families that communication skills and techniques learned while at Great Oak translate well to life outside the barn. Kaleb loves all the horses (and donkeys) at Great Oak, but has a special bond with Arnie, a 17-hand, Irish Sport horse that came to Great Oak from Emily and has a history with the esteemed rider, Phillip Dutton. Like all new students, Kaleb began the program with a horse, assisted by a leader and two side walkers. The eventual goal for all riders is independence. Kaleb is now confident walking and trotting on his own and is working on cantering and some jumping. While at Great Oak, Kaleb has become an accomplished and respected rider. He recently took home a first-place blue ribbon in the South Carolina Special Olympics Equestrian Show. CONTINUED >

Kaleb is proud of the strides he has made in his horsemanship. When we asked him what the greatest benefit of his time spent at Great Oak was, he told us, “Before my time at Great Oak, I struggled interacting with people in any way, shape or form. Since being here, my ability to express myself and be open to people is the best part!” Kaleb’s mom, Ava, is grateful and amazed at the changes she has seen in her son. She stepped away from our interview for a moment, overwhelmed to see her son happily answering questions about the horses and his work at Great Oak. She told us, “Not too long ago, my son would have walked away from a similar interaction without a word.” Great Oak has given Kaleb a platform to excel and grow in his confidence. KAREN OLSON EDWARDS HAS A FAMILY LEGACY OF AIKEN CHARITY WORK .

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, the month of November is a great time to give back to the community. Aiken has a great support system for those in need. Here we highlight locals who are involved in the community with local charities that will encourage our readers to get involved. Calvin Henderson embodies philanthropy. When he sees a need, he doesn’t stop until it’s met. Calvin uses his background in electrical and HVAC, to help our Aiken county youth, not only by instilling his knowledge to them through teaching at the Aiken County Career Center, but also nurturing confidence and self-awareness that will last their entire lives. As he says, “Teaching mama’s babies to be the world’s greatest!” Trade jobs are not only needed, but are rising in popularity as the new generation is opting for less student debt and faster placement in higher-level employment. Calvin also gives back in his hometown of Edgefield,

SC through Feedy Needy, a program that feeds over 200 elderly every Sunday with help from donations and volunteers. “The plated dinner we offer is more than just a home-cooked meal. It allows my team to converse with the lonely, present a smiling face to a stranger, and check on needs that would otherwise go unnoticed,” Calvin notes. He also organizes a special needs prom for the community every year, which is an event that is not to be missed. Calvin is an example of how we can use our skills to enrich the community and help those in need. Karen Olson Edwards has a family history of charity work in Aiken. Her parents Lloyd Olsen (who served on the Aiken City Council) and Crystal Olsen (who helped start the Aiken Country Gardeners Club) were advocates involved in the Salvation Army and Lions Club. Karen likes the aspect of “synergy” that aligns her endeavors. Not only does she work with the Salvation Army (she

is a member of their advisory board), she is also involved with the Homeless Coalition and is the co-president of the Aiken Mid-Day Lions Club. Her garden club, Aiken Country Gardeners and the Garden Council are other ways she brings members together to meet the needs of our citizens. These organizations come together to fight hunger through drives and prepared meals. The Salvation Army will be holding a Thanksgiving meal this year on November 24th, at 322 Gayle Avenue, Aiken from 12-2 pm. If you would like to volunteer or donate call 803-641-4141. The shelter at the Salvation Army now houses 35 residents. In addition to receiving shelter, they are also given hot breakfasts and dinners, as well as job placement. Another way you can give back this holiday season through Salvation Army is through the Angel Tree program which provides Christmas toys and clothing for families in need, as well as volunteering for the bell ringing effort. Karen is proof there definitely are enough hours in the day! Our final spotlight lands on Jim Rhodes, a former engineer, who founded the Equine Rescue of Aiken along with his family in 2005. This 501C3

non-profit organization rehabilitates horses that are abandoned, donated, or confiscated. Jim Rhodes’ philosophy is that we were put on this earth to help others and animals. The grounds of the Rescue are magical, or as Mr. Jim puts it, reminiscent of the Kentucky foothills. Jim thinks of the Rescue as a “destination in Aiken”. The horses that call this place home are lucky, not only for the view, but the elite level of care. Volunteers come every morning to feed, clean, and groom them. The Rescue also runs a children's program, Pony Pals, which works with around

70 children, as well as programs for the hearing impaired and active duty and veterans. The Rescue is open for tours six days a week and by appointment on Sundays. An organization this large relies heavily, not only on their loyal volunteers, but through monetary donations. Follow their Facebook page or visit aikenequinerescue. org to see some of the amazing transformations of their resident horses, ponies or donkeys and for events or donations. We are lucky to have Jim Rhodes in our community to shed light on animal treatment and responsible ownership.
