Maintaining a healthy head of hair is a lifelong journey. With a few simple tips and tricks, you can keep your hair looking and feeling its best at any age. We spoke with Mateo Wood, the salon owner of Ahwatukee’s renowned Verbena, The Salon and regional trainer for Davines, to get expert advice.
“Trends such as scalp care products and sustainable, eco-friendly packaging are worth adopting as they promote healthier hair and a commitment to environmental responsibility.” THE FOUNDATION OF HAIR HEALTH: A HEALTHY SCALP
A healthy scalp is the foundation for healthy hair. "A good balance of the skin microbiota is fundamental for a healthy scalp," explains Wood. This delicate ecosystem of microorganisms can be maintained through regular salon treatments and a personalized home care routine. Fundamental principles of healthy hair and scalp care, according to Wood, “include regular cleansing, moisturizing, gentle detangling, minimizing heat exposure and protecting hair from environmental damage.”
DIET AND LIFESTYLE: NOURISHING YOUR HAIR FROM WITHIN
Diet plays a significant role in hair health. A balanced diet rich in proteins, vitamins, and minerals can nourish your hair from within. While biotin
supplements are often touted, Wood emphasizes the importance of a balanced diet, including leafy greens and other nutrient-rich foods. “I recommend having a healthy balance of lipids – such as Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish like tuna and salmon – which directly impact the hydration of your scalp via the quality of sebum (hair and skin oil byproduct), antioxidants to scrub free radicals, and any supplement or diet that supports healthy blood such as leafy greens.”
PRODUCT PICKS AND STYLING TIPS
When selecting hair care products, consider your hair type and specific concerns. Opt for products free from harsh sulfates and parabens. To minimize heat damage, use a heat protectant before styling. Deep conditioning treatments and hair masks can help maintain moisture and repair damaged hair. CONTINUED >

For gentle detangling, a wide-tooth comb is ideal, especially for wet hair. To distribute natural oils and add shine, a boar bristle brush is a great choice, says Wood. “Materials like some plastics and wood do make a difference in the tool’s ability to glide through the hair without unnecessary grip,” explains Wood. Wood recommends the DEDE/hair mist from Davines as a favorite salon product for hydration and remineralization. “It’s a delicate leave-in moisturizer for the hair, rich in mineral salts, gentle for daily use and features red celery extract,” he shares. “It is for someone who would like to increase hair hydration, reduce porosity, remineralize the hair, and who want to increase the absorption of other products.” For a drugstore pick, he suggests the Wet Brush brand because they distribute products evenly throughout the hair.
TRENDS TO TAKE NOTE
Keeping up with the latest and greatest can take its toll on your hair and your wallet, so where does Wood suggest investing? “Trends such as scalp care products and sustainable, eco-friendly packaging are worth adopting as they promote healthier hair and a commitment to environmental responsibility,” says Woods. Another trend is silk pillowcases and bonnets, which can be a game-changer for hair health. “They are beneficial as they reduce friction, prevent hair breakage and frizz,” says Wood. “Pure silk offers more benefits than satin, as it is more breathable and less absorbent, helping to retain moisture in the hair,” Wood continues. Overall, Woods is a proponent of shopping local and promoting small businesses within our community. “Shop your local salons,” he encourages. “You will often receive better price points, professional advice and the joy of supporting small businesses.”

AGE-DEFYING HAIR CARE
VerbenaTheSalon.com @VerbenaTheSalon
As we age, our hair evolves. Each decade brings new characteristics and concerns that require specific care. “In their 30s, people should focus on maintaining hair health by using quality hair care products, creating a consistent regimen and promotion the health of their scalp through in-salon treatments,” Woods says. By their 40s, people may start to notice thinning hair, making it essential to use products designed to address this concern. Woods also suggests paying more attention to the seasons and how they affect the hair throughout the year during this decade. As people move into their 50s and 60s, Woods says they should keep up with previous routines but add hydrating hair masks or oils to combat
dryness and brittleness that often increase with age. He also shares that this age group sees the impact of hormonal and/or season hair loss. “Because of this change in density – the fullness at the ends of your hair – it may be time to consider cutting shorter than normal to reduce the appearance of thinning ends.” Gentle cleansing is something to take into consideration. “Gentle, sulfate-free shampoos help maintain moisture and reduce irritation.” By incorporating these tips into your daily routine, you can achieve and maintain healthy, beautiful hair for years to come. REBOUND TO A HEALTHIER, HAPPIER YOU Jess Hammer and Riah Adams of Top Shelf Bounce, a popular online platform that teaches rebounding, the low-impact exercise program performed on a mini-trampoline, say they have yet to meet someone who has tried it and isn't hooked. Hammer and Adams started rebounding six years ago. Adams taught bounce classes at a Pilates studio, blending her hip-hop background with her energy. Hammer shied from the exercise though, calling it too “dancey.” When she finally tried it, Hammer immediately loved the runner’s high it gave her. Within weeks, she noticed her body becoming stronger and more toned. It wasn’t just the physical perks that hooked her, it also boosted her mood and left her sweaty–the reward of a hard workout. Even 10 minutes of rebounding helped Hammer and Adams feel happier, stronger and ready to conquer the day. Popular in the ‘80s, rebounding is enjoying an enthusiastic resurgence. A study published by NASA found it to be 68 percent more effective than jogging. Rebounding is awesome for digestion, “lymphatic drainage, blood circulation, oxygenation, bone building, and assisting with muscle tone,” according to Dr. Dian Griesel, author of TurboCharged: The Silver Disobedience Edition. It’s one of the few
activities that will exercise every cell in your body by utilizing gravity and trigger a thorough lymph cleansing, she adds. At first, Hammer and Adams were just two moms carving out time for early morning workouts before the kids were up. But when Hammer’s daughters expressed their love for rebounding, the friends wondered if others would enjoy participating too. So, they started filming workouts. In less than a year, they’ve gained over 134,00 followers on their Instagram account @TopShelfBounce. They’ve also expanded to YouTube and Facebook. Hammer says the response has been wild, and from the start, people just “vibed” with it. These fitness gurus have a mission to help their followers find joy in fitness through quick, effective and upbeat workouts and challenges. Rebounding isn’t just for moms. Amanda Grimm, a certified personal trainer and We Run
Coach, says it’s a great workout for everyone, including beginners, those recovering from injury, and keen athletes who want to focus on coordination, balance and body awareness. But not everyone is ready to “jump in.” Hammer and Adams often receive comments on social media from skeptical people who think rebounding looks fun but worry about peeing their pants. Good news, though. Rebounding also strengthens the pelvic floor over time. Thanks to the “low-impact, up-and-down motion,” Hammer says, “it activates deep core muscles, including those supporting the pelvic area. This repeated motion helps tone and engage the pelvic floor, improving strength and stability.” Some people also feel nervous trying to keep up with Top Shelf Bounce workouts. The bouncers assure newcomers it’s all about finding their unique rhythm. Adams tells clients to think back to when they were kids, jumping on CONTINUED >

the trampoline for fun—it’s about embracing that silly energy again. Head to Top Shelf Bounce’s YouTube channel to find workouts designed for beginners through experienced rebounders. They also have a 30-day challenge that allows their followers to go at their own pace and build on skills. On their Instagram, you can click on their profile link to find gear
recommendations, including mini-trampolines. Adams also teaches in-person rebounding classes at PowerCore Plus in Mesa three days a week. Hammer and Adams say many people benefit from their programs, including cancer survivors, thanks to the lymph cleansing that drains toxins and protects against infection. “It’s honestly what keeps us going—knowing we’re making a little difference out there, one ‘bounce’ at a time!” Hammer adds. These two East Valley residents and best friends feel fortunate to do what they love while spreading their passion for rebounding to the world. They can’t imagine their life without it.
THE BOUNCERS ASSURE NEWCOMERS IT’S ALL ABOUT FINDING THEIR UNIQUE RHYTHM. ADAMS TELLS CLIENTS TO THINK BACK TO WHEN THEY WERE KIDS, JUMPING ON THE TRAMPOLINE FOR FUN—IT’S ABOUT EMBRACING THAT SILLY ENERGY AGAIN.

HEALTH BENEFITS from the Sun FROM BOOSTING VITAMIN D PRODUCTION TO IMPROVING SLEEP AND MORE, THE LARGEST STAR IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM CAN HELP
Living in a sunny climate, you have probably heard plenty of sound advice about avoiding the sun as much as possible. While the largest star in our solar system can definitely cause its share of serious health issues, current research has shown that very small amounts of sunlight – maybe 5 to 15 minutes a day – can be good for the body. Before we get into the potential health benefits of sunshine, it’s important to note that it is still important to wear sunscreen. Fortunately, most, if not all, of the plusses of sun can still occur when you slather on sunscreen before heading outside. Now, let’s get ready to shine some light (bad pun fully intended) on the sun’s benefits:
Getting out into the bright early morning sunlight may help you fall asleep easier when you go to bed at night. 22
S ELF CA R E | W EL L NES S
Vitamin D Vitamin D is nicknamed “the sunshine vitamin” for good reason. The UV rays of the sun help the body to create vitamin D, a nutrient which is needed for bone and muscle health, boosting the immune system, helping with cardiovascular health and more. In fact, the vitamin D your body creates after being in sunlight will help your system better absorb calcium, the mineral that is linked for having strong bones and may also help keep bone-related health conditions like osteoporosis and osteopenia at bay. As the National Center for Biotechnology Information notes, using sunscreen does not compromise vitamin D synthesis.
Circadian rhythm Sunlight can help maintain your body’s internal clock, or circadian rhythm. Getting out into the bright early morning sunlight may help you fall asleep easier when you go to bed at night.
Improves Your Mood Sunlight encourages your brain to create serotonin, a chemical that can help you feel more focused, in a better mood and on an even keel. The sun’s impact on mood is so powerful, physicians will use natural or artificial light to treat seasonal affective disorder.
Helps with High Blood Pressure Getting outside for some rays may also help with hypertension, or high blood pressure. Researchers believe that UV light can increase the amount of nitric oxide in the body – this molecule has been found to cause blood vessels to widen, thus lowering blood pressure. A study did find that people who were in kidney failure and spent time in the sun had a lowered systolic blood pressure.
Increase in Energy This benefit is a positive side effect of the sun’s impact on sleep and mood. If you sleep better, you will tend to have more energy and if you are feeling happier, you may be inspired to get more done during the day.
Ideas for Getting More Sunlight in Your Life Fortunately, it’s pretty easy to get some extra sunlight during the day. You could eat your lunch outside around noon, park your car further away from the store or office to get some extra rays as you head inside, walk your dog, or spend time in your garden or a nearby park. SWEETS The beginning of the year is packed with inspiration and motivation to get back on track after a sweet-filled holiday season. It can feel extreme, and it also can be depleting to cut oneself off from everything indulgent after weeks of eating favorite sweet and savory recipes. For sugar lovers who believe going cold-turkey feels intimidating or overwhelming, nutrition-packed desserts are a great way to stick to healthy food goals without the guilt.

1. Cut a banana into 8-10 small slices, around 1/2 inch each. 2. Spread 1/2 tablespoon of peanut butter (or your choice of nut butter) on each banana slice. 3. Drizzle a small amount of melted chocolate chips or caramel over each bite. 4. Freeze for 15-20 minutes and enjoy! Pro tip: A dash of sea salt flakes on top of these can be *chef’s kiss.* These are great to keep on hand in the freezer all weeklong. Once they set, add them to a closed container to keep the bananas from browning.
Late night snack cravings are real! When finding yourself rooting through the cabinets for a sweet fix, these protein cookie dough bites are a great way to curb temptation. This recipe yields around 20 small bites, which can be cut into small squares or rolled into dough balls. Each bite is around 105 calories. If you find the dough is a little too dry, add a dash of milk as needed. Ingredients • 1/4 cup milk • 1/2 cup vanilla protein powder • 1/4 cup maple syrup • 1/4 cup peanut butter (or alternate nut or sunflower butter) • 1 cup almond flour • 1 teaspoon vanilla • Chocolate chips as desired Pro tip: Use mini chocolate chips and for a dash of savory add sea salt flakes on top. Once combined, store the bites in the refrigerator in a covered container to keep them moist.
Protein COOKIE DOUGH Bites
Frozen PEANUT BUTTER Bites
Danger ahead: this snack is amazing. It’s the easiest of the bunch and also satisfies a sweet tooth craving. This can be whipped together in just 5 minutes and makes just a small amount. Feel free to take creative liberty here with your amounts, but if you make it to this recipe, they are around 90 calories per bite.
