Home. It’s more than just the house you live in. It is a place filled with memories and history. It can serve as both a base and a launchpad. It’s somewhere to be our authentic selves. It is where we start our days and end our evenings. That four-letter word holds not only our belongings, but also hold such significance. No matter the interior or exterior of our houses, one thing we all have in common is the fact that we call Ahwatukee home. Some have discovered Ahwatukee, fell in love and decided to call it home. Some of us have left to explore other cities, states and even countries, and returned. Some – like me – planted deep roots, growing up here and choosing to stay. While I’ve lived in a few houses over the years, Ahwatukee has been my constant home. Whitney Miller Boldly go where few have gone before. In an interior design world awash with neutrals, fortune favors the brave who incorporate colors, prints and patterns into their homes. Whitney Miller, lead designer at Prim Design Co. and on Instagram @WhitneyMillerStyled, knows exactly how to expertly match bright colors and prints to create inspiring and fun interiors. The interior designer and stylist has done just that in her own home. “Most people who step into my home or see me on Instagram tell me ‘Oh, you’ve mixed so many colors and prints; I didn’t know you could do that,’” says Miller. Miller shares that a lot of the trends in interior design today favor a neutral palate. “Neutrals are safe and that’s what people are seeing, but I encourage my clients to start by choosing one central color.” And what color does she suggest? “The best gateway color is green,” she explains. “It blends well with neutrals and is a good building block.” She also loves to feature animal print. “It’s a signature of mine. Many people think animal print will look tacky or cheap; but when done right, it gives such an elegant and sophisticated look. It can be a defining part of your home.” Another way to use color or pattern is simple – just go for it. “I say, pick something and live with it for a month. If you hate it, change it. Nothing is permanent and almost everything is returnable.” Miller shares four more ways to ease into becoming a color convert.

BEGIN WITH S M A L L S PA C E S Miller knows that interior design can be overwhelming to many and suggests starting small. “Pick a small room or area in your home that will give you a big impact. My favorite small spaces to start with are a powder bathroom, a laundry room or breakfast nook,” Miller shares. “This is a great place to incorporate a fun wallpaper or paint color that you might otherwise not feel comfortable covering your whole home with. Adding wallpaper to a set of bay windows defined a space that otherwise just blended into the kitchen.”
PAT T E R N E D C H A I R S & U N IQU E RUG S “Accent chairs and rugs can add so much fun and depth to your home,” shares Miller. “While you might not be able to commit to a color or pattern on a large purchase such as your main sofa, a colored rug or accent chair brings warmth and just the right amount of color at a much friendlier price point. I always tell my clients their home should be a true reflection of the people who live there. This is a great opportunity to display a favorite color or textile. Personally, I’ve never met an animal print I didn’t love. So, when I saw these leopard print chairs, I knew I needed them!”

Hello, luxury!” Miller says. “I always encourage clients to carry that feeling over into their homes. Start with a white base to your bedding; it’s elegant, fresh and clean looking. To make it your own, you can layer in colored accent pillows and a quilt or duvet. This gives your bedding a fun pop that can easily be switched out seasonally or year to year as your mood or taste changes.”

Adding art to your walls is an easy way to bring in a splash of color. “Just like bedding, you can’t ever go wrong with a good white on your walls,” she says. “White gives you so many options to accent with fun, interesting wall art. You can let your personality shine through your selections. All my friends know that I am a zodiac junky. Renovate Your Gate Local business helps homeowners boost their safety and curb appeal one gate at a time

When someone visits your home, the first thing they see is something we may not often consider—your gate. An updated gate, whether stylish, practical, or both, can be a one-of-a-kind way to make your residence stand out. Luckily, Ahwatukee is home to Renovate Your Gate, a locally owned small business that can take gates of all shapes and sizes from drab to fab. Local resident James Lewis founded Renovate Your Gate in 2000 when he had the opportunity to turn a long-time hobby into a full-time business. “It started when my HOA asked me to clean up my gate, so I put new boards on it, added paint, and fixed it up,” Lewis says. “I really liked it because I enjoy working with my hands and loved transforming my old gate into something new that stood out. When neighbors saw
the gate, they asked me to do their gates, and my business grew from those referrals.” Today, Lewis, his wife Heather, and their teammate Jay Webb renovate gates across Ahwatukee, the East Valley, and beyond. Webb says that there are many benefits to renovating a gate, including safety, security, and adding to your home’s curb appeal. “Whatever the customer’s vision is, we can likely make it come to life,” Webb says. “If you are dinged by your HOA, they oftentimes do not offer gate renovation services or referrals,” Webb continues. “So, we are here to be that local service to help homeowners become compliant with their HOA requirements, but also add some personalization, too.” Some examples of possible gates include ones that are decorative and ornamental, or more practical ones like an RV gate.

They can even knock down block walls to widen spaces for gates and include technology aspects as well, such as electronic touchpads for gate entry. The Renovate Your Gate team has also renovated gates for side yards and dog runs. They can even create gates to help with privacy, especially for townhouses or smaller spaces, and they always make sure that the gates are code compliant. Lewis has been an Ahwatukee resident for over a decade and his wife Heather was born and raised here—just like their 9-year-old daughter Brooklyn. He says the fact his business remains family-owned and operated is by design. “We’re a small business, and demand is high, but we stay small on purpose, so we continue to emphasize quality gates and flawless customer service,” Lewis says. “It’s quality over quantity for us, and while we work with customers across the Valley, we’d love to renovate more gates here in Ahwatukee.” “No job is too small, and we strive for excellence in every job that we do,” he adds. When it comes to what makes Renovate Your Gate stand out, Webb says that their small team doesn’t take themselves too seriously and has a fun sense of humor— making the gate renovation process fun and painless. “We had a wonderful experience with Renovate Your Gate and we love our new gate,” George Sant, a recent local customer, says in a review of the team’s work. “The company was responsive from the initial inquiry to completion. We got to pick our design and our color; they even recommended the keypad lock, which they installed.” Looking toward the future, Lewis says that he hopes to continue to add more unique gates to Ahwatukee one home at a time. “Ahwatukee is such a special place because of all the amazing people here who support their neighbors and friends,” Lewis says. “Many of my neighbors own their own small businesses and we all support each other. A Delicate Balance
Tips and tools for navigating the challenges of life in the Sandwich Generation ARTICLE BY BETH DEL VILLE

Being a family caregiver is a tough job. Caring for children is demanding. Caring for aging parents is trying. Caring for both while also trying to balance work and personal life? It’s a difficult position to be in and a place where, according to a recent Pew Research Center survey, more than 54 percent of the population in their 40s finds themselves – the so-called “sandwich generation.” “It’s one of the hardest times of someone’s adult life – caring for your own children when you’re caring for your aging parent,” says Sarah Stetz, a medical social worker with Dignity Health at Home. “People are trying to manage a full-time job and make sure the kids get to school and extracurricular activities while administering a parent’s medication, taking them to and from doctors’ and specialists’ visits, and handling their safety. They’re tasked with so much.” The Ahwatukee resident has nearly 20 years of experience as a licensed medical social worker and works closely with those trying to traverse this time of life. “I assist families in navigating the medical system, while providing resources and planning for the future. Social workers can help make the aging process more manageable.”
WHERE TO BEGIN While it can feel daunting to know where to start, there are many resources available to caregivers to help them navigate every nuanced facet of caring for aging parents. “I always suggest reaching out to the Area Agency on Aging. They have a program called SAIL – Senior Adult Independent Living – that helps seniors age 60 and older live independently at home,” Stetz says. Additionally, she personally utilizes the Area Agency on Aging’s 24-Hour Senior Help Line for her patients.
“It’s an amazing resource. You can get on a list for housekeeping services, home-delivered meals based on specific diets, and more.” Caregivers can also connect with a social worker at any local hospital to find out about available resources. “Caregivers can call the main hospital line and ask to be connected to the emergency room social worker,” Stetz shares. “If caregivers have medical or planning questions, there’s someone available. It’s a great free resource.” Hospice of the Valley offers a program specifically for caregivers whose patients are diagnosed with dementia. This resource is available at no cost to families, and services include 24-hour phone support; home visits with a dementia educator who can help with things like behavior management strategies; and phone access to a nationally recognized geriatrician and dementia doctor.
RELIEVING CAREGIVER STRESS One of the hardest parts of caregiving is the toll it can take on the caregivers themselves, 71 percent of whom are women. “There are a ton of support groups for caregivers,” says Stetz. “The Arizona Caregiver Coalition can assist in finding the appropriate support group, depending on the diagnosis of the patient.” Stetz says while oftentimes caregivers shy away from support groups, many are now offered virtually, which saves the caregiver time. “Knowing that you are not alone in this stage of life is very comforting. Having others in the same situation to connect with is extremely beneficial.” Locally in Ahwatukee, there is the YMCA’s Outreach Programs for Aging Seniors (Y OPAS), a group of volunteers who provide free support services to seniors and their caregivers. Ahwatukee residents age 65 and older who want to stay

independently living at home can receive assistance with grocery shopping and errands, in-person or phone visits, and transportation to and from appointments. Another way to help alleviate caregiver stress is for other members of the family to help out. Children can make snacks for their grandparents, or even help by making a simple meal. “It is critical that caregivers are able to care for themselves,” Stetz says. “I always recommend that caregivers continue to take time out of their day for themselves, whether it’s 10 minutes, or two hours. I stress that if they do not care for themselves, they will not be able to care for others.”
PLANNING TODAY FOR TOMORROW Stetz says the best thing one can do for their families is to start early, before stressful medical situations arise. “Prepare your paperwork and future now for your kids. Have a living will, durable power of attorney that allows access to bills and bank accounts, as well as medical power of attorney.” If possible, Stetz suggests getting long-term care insurance, which is available to adults aged 60 and above. Above all, Stetz stresses the importance of planning ahead. “It is so important to get your wishes on paper and document someone as your decision-maker,” Stetz says. “Planning ahead is one of the best ways to provide the family with the support they may need in the future.”

WHAT SETS APART DOGTOPIA OF AHWATUKEE FROM OTHER DOGGIE DAYCARES? Dogtopia is a community of like-minded dog parents with a focus on the well-being and happiness of the whole family. Our primary emphasis is being a daycare for dogs. All of the dogs come regularly, a minimum of once per week. They go through an evaluation process to make sure they’re a good fit with our center staff, called coaches, and the other dogs. We do not do drop-in daycare. Our on-staff biologist says that dogs do better when they have a predictable routine, and that includes the dogs and people they see every day at daycare. Our doggie spa and overnight boarding are open to regular daycare clients only. Dogtopia of Ahwatukee has three playrooms catered to different play styles, so your dog can spend time in the one that best fits his or her needs.

WHAT MAKES DOGTOPIA OF AHWATUKEE THE PERFECT PLACE TO TAKE YOUR PET? Beyond the safety and routine that we have in place, it’s just really fun! Our coaches get to know your dog and also your dog’s BFFF (Best Furry Friend Forever). That way, when our clients schedule their dogs, we can let them know when their dog’s BFFF will be there too. Coaches always supervise and interact with the dogs. We implement basic training techniques and we always want to make sure the dogs have fun. We plan bacon bubble parties, themed days, photo days once a month, and over-the-top doggie birthday parties. We also have live webcams to provide full transparency for our clients.

Ever ything you need to know to create a breathtaking in-home bar
Having a home bar is cool. It is, however, not cool if the only thing you can offer guests is a couple of dusty bottles of liquor that have been there for years. What you have in your home bar can make or break your gathering, however informal it may be. A well-rounded bar should include at least one bottle of each of the six base liquors, which are the foundation for the majority of cocktails. Stocking a nice selection of these will ensure you can mix up almost any cocktail on a whim. If you feel like a whiskey cocktail tonight, you’ll be ready. When a guest asks for a brandy, gin, rum or tequila-based libation, you’ll be prepared to grab your shaker and mix up a drink.
VODK A Vodka has a clean, transparent flavor and is used for more cocktails than any other distilled spirit. Stock at least one “fifth” bottle of vodka, but opt for a handle (1.75 liters) if you like to entertain. • A good solid option like Titos is ideal for tall drinks like the screwdriver and bloody mary. • If you enjoy a vodka martini, spend a little extra for a top-shelf bottle as well. • Consider stocking a couple of flavored vodkas. In a traditional bar, citrus and vanilla vodkas are the trusted standbys. suggested glassware:

RUM
A well-stocked bar has at least two bottles of rum. • A light rum will be your workhorse for most cocktails, from the tropical daiquiri to the timeless mojito. • As a secondary rum, take your pick of aged, dark or spiced rum. suggested glassware:

Gin can be quite floral and botanical depending on the brand, since it is made from very botanicalforward juniper berries. • If you aren’t an aficionado, a good bottle of a London dry gin is recommended. This is the most versatile and can work in everything from a gin and tonic to a dry martini. • From there, you can get adventurous - every brand is different and a wide array of flavors is available. suggested glassware:
TEQUIL A Tequila’s quality can vary drastically, so make sure to test them out before purchasing. It’s the key to the ever-loved margarita, though there are other fascinating tequila cocktails to explore as well. Generally, you’ll want to stock at least one nice tequila. • The most versatile style is blanco (or silver) tequila, and it’s the best option for a one-tequila bar. • For a little upgrade, add a slightly aged reposado as well. suggested glassware:

This is where things get complicated. Each whiskey has its own style and characteristics. In general, two bottles are a good start - but you can always add more. • For the most versatility, stock a bourbon and Canadian whisky. The bourbon will give you that robust whiskey flavor and the Canadian blends tend to be very smooth. • Rye whiskey is a great choice for everyday mixed drinks. Though some drinkers find it too spicy, rye is excellent in almost any cocktail that calls for a generic whiskey. If you enjoy classic cocktails, give rye a try for an authentic taste. • A bottle of Irish whiskey and a decent blended scotch are good complements to any bar. Liqueurs are often used as flavoring agents that define a cocktail. On occasion, they are the only distilled spirits in a drink. Liqueurs come in every flavor you could want and a bottle can last quite a long time. Start with the basics and gradually add to your stock as you see fit. Amaretto: The almond-flavored liqueur is used in both fancy and casual cocktails. • Coffee Liqueur: White Russians and countless other cocktails rely on a bottle like Kahlúa. • Dry and Sweet Vermouth: Technically, these are fortified wines, but they’re essential for martinis. • Irish Cream Liqueur: Baileys is a popular brand, though there are others worth checking out. You can also stock another cream liqueur, such as RumChata instead. • Orange Liqueur: Used in countless cocktails, this one’s invaluable. To know me is to know that I love to bake. I enjoy being in the kitchen and whipping up everything from cookies to scratch-made bread. This banana bread recipe is a staple in my house and much-beloved by family and friends.

1. Preheat oven to 325° and butter a 9x5x3-inch loaf pan. 2. Cream butter and sugar in a large bowl until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well. 3. In a small bowl, mash the bananas with a fork. Mix in the milk, cinnamon and vanilla. In another bowl, mix together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and chocolate chips. 4. Add banana mixture to creamed mixture and stir until combined. Add dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. 5. Pour batter into prepared pan; bake for one hour, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow to cool for 15 minutes. Remove bread from pan to cool completely.
