A New Year's Wish For You The new year always brings with it a freshness of new beginnings. It offers a chance to evaluate what is working for us and to look for ways to continue to grow. To help, we’ve curated this issue – dedicated to health and wellbeing in all its forms – to be a care kit of sorts. We share ways to detox your home, nourish your body, feed your soul, and rejuvenate your mind, body and spirit. We introduce you to Monica Dohrman who is revamping how we care for our sick kids, and talk to Michelle Hettinger from F45 Training Ahwatukee about how small steps can lead to big changes. Recently I heard Jason Mraz’s song “Have It All” playing, and was struck by his lyrics: May the best of your todays be the worst of your tomorrows. It really resonated with me. That’s my wish for my family, my friends and all of you. Here’s to 2023 being the best year yet; a year full of hope, happiness and health.

A H E A LT H I E R HOME

Start the New Year right by swapping out old cleaning products for clean alternatives

Out with the old, in with the new – and non-toxic. Aly Kirkpatrick shares simple DIYs to create three clean products to freshen up your home, from an all-purpose cleaner, to a handcrafted laundry detergent and a refreshing room spray. Aly says she easily finds the ingredients for each product on Amazon or at Target.

Instructions: 1/

All-Purpose Cleaner: Great for kitchens and bathrooms, this cleaner doesn’t contain the ingredients found in traditional cleaners that have been shown harmful to respiratory and endocrine systems. Simply combine 16 ounces of water and 1 ounce of Castile soap (Aly’s favorite is the lavender scent) in a 24-ounce glass spray bottle and shake to mix.

2/

Laundry Detergent: This recipe lasts Aly’s family of four anywhere from five to six months, using it for multiple loads per week.

12

H OW TO | HEA LTH + WEL LNE S S

In a large container, stir together 1½ cups washing soda, 1½ cups baking soda, ½ cup Epsom salt and 10 drops of essential oil. Use 1 to 2 tablespoons per load, depending on soil level.

3/

Room Spray: Customize this alternative to traditional room spray with your favorite scents. In a 4-ounce glass spray bottle, fill ¼ of the way with witch hazel. Add 10 to 20 drops of essential oils – Aly likes a combination of lemon, lavender and orange. Fill the rest of the bottle with water and shake to mix.

Aly Kirkpatrick is an East Valley photographer, wife and mother of two. She’s passionate about helping people make affordable and safer product switches. Learn more on Aly’s Instagram @aly_kirk and @alykirkphoto.

FRONT PORCH PEDIATRICS OFFERS QUALITY MOBILE MEDICAL CARE FOR THE LITTLEST LOCAL PATIENTS

EXP E RT H E LP | HEALTH + W E LLNE S S

With three children under eight years old, Ahwatukee native Monica Dohrman, PNP, knows first-hand the hoops parents and caregivers often jump through to get medical care for their children. That’s why, as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner with more than 10 years of experience in primary care pediatric medicine, she started Front Porch Pediatrics. “My practice, Front Porch Pediatrics, is very different from your typical primary care pediatric office,” says Dohrman. “Front Porch Pediatrics allows patients to be scheduled by a text message or phone call that is directly answered by me. There are no hold times or elevator music that can drive you crazy. My patients are seen in the convenient setting of my front porch, their own home, or frequently in their own vehicles. I offer free follow up care for the same illness, which allows for close monitoring throughout the course of their illness.” The idea of Front Porch Pediatrics began in June 2020 while Dohrman was home with her three little ones—the youngest just three months

old at the time. The pandemic in full force, Dohrman originally planned to put a pause on pediatrics and be a stay-at-home mom. “In June 2020, it seemed like everyone, including myself, was afraid to bring their children out in the world, especially to a doctor’s office,” she recalls. “At that time, many pediatric offices were not even seeing sick patients in the office or were only doing telemedicine visits. Most offices would only allow parents to bring in one child at a time, and parents were left with few options for medical care. After consulting with friends, family, and other nurse practitioners, I decided to open my own practice—one where parents can have their children seen in a convenient, stress-free environment. There’s no germ-filled waiting rooms and families don’t have to book childcare for their other children. The pandemic really changed the way medical care was offered. It opened our eyes and allowed us to think out of the box.” Dohrman explains that Front Porch Pediatrics treats children for common health concerns, including ear infections, asthma, allergies, strep throat, rashes and eczema, colds and coughs, and more. She also offers a telemedicine option as well for questions or to determine if the little patient needs to be seen in-person. While the practice is private pay (they do not take insurance), Dohrman says the fees are up-front and reasonable—often less than an urgent care copay. Originally based in North Phoenix, when Dohrman moved back to her hometown of Ahwatukee in 2021, Front Porch Pediatrics came with her. “As a mom of three, I know first-hand what parents have to go through to get good medical care for their little ones,” Dohrman says.

Olivia and Hudson

Monica and Piper

Monica with her children Olivia (8), Piper (2) and Hudson (5).

“I dealt with the scheduling issues, babysitter problems, and waiting rooms. I know how difficult and frustrating it can all be. That’s why I decided to help change the system—to help parents get the care their kids need when they need it. I hope my services can take a load off of their often-hectic lives.” Of course, while there is the emphasis on convenience for the parents and caregivers, Dohrman says the mobile pediatric model benefits the ones who matter most—her patients. “For children, especially those who have a fear of going to the doctor’s office, my practice is a lot less intimidating,” she says. “When I go to their homes, children get to sit on their own couch with familiar surroundings, or if they come to me, they are in a relaxed outdoor setting or sometimes they prefer to even stay in their own vehicles.” “Ahwatukee is a very supportive community of families,” Dohrman continues. “I grew up in Ahwatukee and know what a wonderful place it is to raise a family. We are a small town in a big city, and I think a quality pediatric service such as Front Porch Pediatrics is something that Ahwatukee values.” FrontPorchPediatricsAZ.com | 623-252-9044 | @frontporchpediatrics

F45 Training Brings Functional Fitness to Ahwatukee

The New Year brings the motivation to start good habits, helps us renew commitment to habits that are already a part of our lives, and even brings the hope of starting over when we’ve gotten behind in our health journeys. Michelle Hettinger, Regional Manager for F45 Training Ahwatukee, has spent her career helping people find that motivation in improving not just their physical fitness, but their overall mind and body wellness. Hettinger has worked in the fitness industry for 37 years. She says F45 Training Ahwatukee is unique in its approach to health. The F stands for functional training and the 45 is the minutes it takes to get a good, heart-pumping workout. Functional training is a workout style that prepares the body for the ordinary activities of daily life. F45 Training Ahwatukee helps its members focus on total mind and body wellness and gives them tools to implement a healthy lifestyle. The community-based, local facility helps people feel welcomed and connected both to the health trainers and their fellow members in an intimate, personable way. They call it Team Training. People are able to reach their health goals when they feel motivated by professional trainers and other members. The fitness studio also offers an app

that assists members in tracking their nutritional goals, even including recipes to make those goals attainable. It can be hard, though, to know where to start, especially if you’ve never embarked on a focused health journey before. F45 Training Ahwatukee wants to help. Hettinger spoke with us about twelve steps you can implement all year along in 2023 to improve your health and reach your goals. Step one, Hettinger says, is to start where you are. Maybe you’re relatively fit and want to maintain that, or maybe you’re just now taking your health seriously and you’re not sure where to begin. “Starting where you are means setting realistic goals and beginning with baby steps,” Hettinger explains. She elaborates that trying to change everything about yourself all at once, all in the month of January, will only lead to discouragement and burnout. “Pick one thing to work on and start with that,” she advises. She points out that an F45 trainer at the Ahwatukee studio can sit down with you, look at your unique situation, and recommend steps towards accomplishing your goals. “Don’t try to conquer the mountain,” Hettinger says. “Start with little hills and build on the mini successes.” F45Training.com/Ahwatukee

What better time than now to restore and renew the mind, body, and soul for the year ahead? Both at its 44,000-square-foot Well & Being Spa and across the AAA Five Diamond resort itself, the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess is a mecca for pampering and wellness at the grandest of levels. The property boasts six sparkling pools, each catering to a different set of needs. Sonoran Landing, which is solely for guests 21 and over and features oversized daybeds as well two 25-meter lanes for lap swimmers and personal servers, is of note as is Sunset Beach and its 9,000 square feet of soft white sand, which feels like a beach escape the heart of the desert. The signature Princess Pool, remodeled in recent years, is similarly sublime, thanks in great part to its massive hot tub, outdoor café, and sweeping views of the famed TPC Scottsdale golf courses. Speaking of the TPC Scottsdale, though best known as the home to the WM Phoenix Open, the picturesque, challenging courses are also a must for those looking to move their bodies and strengthen their minds in the most epic of settings. The Fairmont Scottsdale Princess has a golf concierge to help book tee times, organize private lessons, create personalized clinics, and even help players decide on the best course – Champions or Stadium – for their skill level.

“ T H E FA I R M O N T S C O T T S DA L E P R I N C E S S IS A MECCA FOR PA M P E R I N G A N D W E L L N E S S AT THE GR ANDEST O F L E V E L S .”

And then there is the spa. Make that spas. Plural. The Well & Being Spa features a full-scale traditional day spa complete with locker room, showers, sauna, steam room, relaxation rooms, acupuncture, single-sex indoor cold plunge and whirlpool areas, co-ed grotto, salon with nail services, and more than a dozen treatment rooms. Within it, however, there is a wholly second experience called Sisley-Paris. Opened in 2021, the international luxury beauty brand is the benchmark in phyto-cosmetology, sourcing the best natural plant extracts to obtain the most effective skincare results. Sisley features six of its own treatment rooms as well as a private salon, and all guests at Sisley have full access to Well & Being amenities. Both spas provide full access to the state-of-the-art fitness center, which boasts personal health assessments, training, aerial hammock yoga, wall-pulley training, Surfset, bungee fitness, spinning, and Tai Chi. For those looking for something even more outside of the box, there is a 60-minute Hypervolt Assisted Stretch program that uses a vibrating massage device designed to increase flexibility, improve blood circulation, and reduce muscular soreness. The Well & Being Rooftop Pool is also open to spa guests but secluded from other hotel guests to ensure it remains a tranquil oasis in the sky. And whether at the pool or spas, do not miss the exclusive Well & Being cuisine, which was developed in partnership with a registered dietitian and the resort’s executive chef to ensure it tickles the tastebuds while nourishing the body. There’s no better time than the present to incorporate fresh, colorful produce into your diet – it’s something we can all use more of. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, just one in 10 adults consumes the recommended amount of vegetables daily, which is two to three cups (one to three cups for children, depending on their age).

CHOOSING COLOR FOR GOOD HEALTHTH The benefits of eating fresh produce are undeniable and it’s well-known that eating foods in a rainbow of bright hues is important anytime. However, it is even more important in winter, when they help to keep our immune systems primed and ready to fight colds, flus and other viruses. They are bursting with flavor and are rich in vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. Phytonutrients are natually occuring chemicals that help plants stay healthy; when we eat them, our health also prospers.

Making sure your plate is piled with a colorful array of vegetables doesn’t just make your plate look more appetizing, each color provides specific health benefits, experts say. For example, red vegetables like beets and radishes contain lycopene, which can improve heart health and may lower your risk for certain cancers. Orange and yellow vegetables, such as winter squash and sweet potatoes, contain carotenoids which can help strengthen the immune system and improve vision. To help improve brain health and lower blood pressure, choose antioxidant-rich purple vegetables like eggplant and purple cabbage.

FRESH FINDS Eating in season is key to getting the best bang for your flavorful vegetable buck. Swing by the Ahwatukee Farmer’s Market on any given Sunday and you’ll find fresh produce ready for a farm-to-table experience in your CONTINUED >

own kitchen. Community supported agriculture (CSA) boxes are another way to add vegetables to your meals. They give you a chance to try seasonal, locally grown produce you may not otherwise select. Both are great opportunities to try a new recipe based on a new-to-you vegetable.

MAKE VEGETABLES EVEN MORE DELICIOUS If you’re looking for ways to make eating vegetables more appealing – or to get your picky eaters to try something new – why not • Make the switch to veggie noodles or riced cauliflower; • Add vegetables to foods you already eat, like mixing in peas or green beans to pasta dishes; • Drink your vegetables blended in smoothies or pressed as juice; • Wrap your burgers and sandwiches in lettuce; • Start your day off right by including vegetables at breakfast; or • Make a vegetable soup and freeze leftovers for a quick meal on busy nights.

LEGGINGS 3 WAY S ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS

Our suggestions for styling faux leather leggings As we move through the season of spandex when most of us feel we’d rather not leave our stretchy pants, we wanted to feature three distinct looks using the same pair of Foil Snake Print Faux Leather leggings from Spanx. Whether you’re brunching with the babes or getting ready for date night, these versatile leggings can carry you through from casual to chic. While there are endless ways to wear them, we’re going to show you three ways to start styling them today.

BRUNCH AFTER BARRE Who doesn’t love a good brunch with the girls after your workout complete with mimosas to celebrate? Assuming you are sweaty from leg lifts and flutter kicks, our suggestion is to layer your sweaty tank with loose layers and a light jacket to swiftly transition you from the barre to breakfast. A hat is always a good option to have on hand in case you worked too hard and that hair is showing it. We opted for easy-to-slip-on sockless sneakers that breathe. Since feet are one of the ways the body regulates temperature, you want to go airy with your footwear after a workout. Lastly, don’t forget a cute tote or bag. Consider throwing in a clean tank and any makeup or face wipes you may need for freshening up on your way.

MOTO MAMA What we love about Spanx is their inherent ability to elevate your look, regardless of the occasion. Stretchy pants in a faux leather snake design? Say no more. Pair them with edgy booties or colorful pumps for a more elegant aesthetic. Playing with different textures is a good way to add interest and intrigue. Consider a chunky sweater with some unexpected details like the bare shoulder shown here, a thick boucle or intricate detailing. We love a good leather jacket with hardware details draped over the shoulder(s) for chilly evenings as you traverse the town. Pair this look with a gorgeous sparkly clutch and chunky bracelet.

SATUR DAY Whether you’re headed to a child’s sports game or a bar to watch the big game with your friends, leggings offer the structure and flexibility you’ll want as you find your spot among the fans in the bleachers or indulge in some lovely libations. Layers are life for this look. We tied a button-down around the waist which is so nice through the colder winter months as both an outfit accessory and a layering piece. Fur-lined high tops provide practical footwear for this look — because who doesn’t love some killer sneaks? A shacket and crossover bag complete the look.

Whether you want a bit of a boost, a hint of a lift, or just a little tuck, you won’t go wrong with this versatile shapewear. And with these styling tips, you’re ready to throw them on for any occasion!

Snag some of the key details of the outfits here! 32
