Furry Friends and Cutie Kids Friends, As evident by our adorable cover, this issue is all about our pets and kids. I'll be honest, I'm crazy about all of mine! I have two amazing sons - Jackson is 19 and Keaton is 17. They make my husband, Pat, and me incredibly proud. I can truly say that I've loved nearly every stage of being a boy mom, but this young adult stage is so much more fun than I thought it would be. Not that we're without bumps and problems, but watching them both start to spread their wings and work on the next steps to shape their futures has been a joy to experience. And let me tell you about my other two loves, Thor and Hammy, seen in the photo here. Thor is our English Bulldog that some amazing friends rehomed to us, and Hammy is the sweetheart we rescued nearly two years ago. These two are so fun to watch together and bring so much happiness to our home. This issue brings fun stories about some really cute pups, and helpful information from local expert Katey McPherson about how to best support our kids and their mental health. Did you know that in addition to serving as our best friends and extended members of the family, dogs serve four critical roles in society? First, there are service dogs. These specially trained animals perform specific tasks for and work with people with disabilities. Then, there are working dogs. According to the American Kennel Club, these animals are trained to perform specialized tasks that assist their human companions. An example of a working dog might be a police or military dog. There are also therapy dogs. Often found in hospitals, nursing homes and behavioral health centers, these dogs are trained to provide comfort and affection in a clinical setting. Finally, there are emotional support dogs. These animals provide support that helps ease anxiety through companionship. “We have at least nine dogs who take turns providing emotional support and companionship in our office,” says Amy O. According to Duenas, this includes divorce, adoption, child support in Arizona, child custody and parenting time, legal decision making, post-decree issues, premarital and postmarital agreements, same sex issues, and spousal maintenance.

“This area of law deals with the most personal of matters,” says Duenas. “The work is certainly rewarding, but not without its daily stressors. Enter our furry friends daily!” Duenas’ dog, Lola, is a fiery, 15-year-old Chihuahua who – of all the dogs – is currently on a break from her regular visits thanks to her new passion for peeing indoors. “There is not a day, however, when one or more of our other little buddies isn’t with us,” says Duenas. Her law partner Dori L. Eden has three dogs that make regular appearances. There are two Greyhounds – Rookie and Bo – who are retired racing dogs and then Golden Retriever Nora. And fellow partner Carrie P. Cravatta has a loveable mutt named Murphy. “We also have a Bernese Mountain Dog, Great Pyrenees/Poodle mix, Giant Schnauzer and sweet Pit Bull who make regular visits,” says Duenas, adding that one member of their team volunteers for a Giant Schnauzer rescue so it is common for fosters to visit as well. According to Duenas, having the freedom to invite the dogs to serve as honorary officemates is just one of the many benefits at the firm, which was formed in 2017. “The seeds for Duenas Eden Cravatta were actually sewn far before 2017 when we made it official,” says Duenas, an Arizona native who competed as a swimmer and softball player in her youth before attending the University of Arizona for her bachelor's degree and then the University of Denver for her law degree. While Duenas, who knew she would be a lawyer after reading To Kill a Mockingbird in fourth grade and idolizing Atticus Finch, initially planned to work in Tribal law and water usage rights, a professor at the University of Denver noticed her keen eye for family law and invited her to work in the student law office of a family law clinic. “I initially imagined it would be a good resume builder, but the work changed my life,” says Duenas, who returned to the Valley following the completion of her law degree to take the Arizona Bar Exam.

Upon passing the bar, Duenas began her work in the field, eventually landing at a large practice that happened to office in the same building as Eden’s firm. “By this time Dori was working successfully on her own, but her extensive background included years with Tiffany & Bosco, where she was named a partner, and The Law Offices of Scott David Stewart,” says Duenas, adding Eden is exceptionally skilled at all aspects of the dissolution of marriage and divorce as well as custody issues and negotiated settlements. “She also volunteered – and still does – on the Ahwatukee YMCA board of managers, among a litany of other nonprofit good works.” The two attorneys became fast friends, so much so that when the idea of working together started to make sense, the women agreed to only further discussions if they wrote a document specifying that no business relationship would ever come between their personal friendship. “This document in hand, we formed the business in 2017,” says Duenas. “Then enter Carrie.” Carrie refers to the third partner in the practice, Carrie P. Cravatta.

At first, Duenas and Eden had the idea to entice Cravatta – known Valleywide for her deft skill in all things family law as well as for her volunteer work with Family Lawyer's Assistance Project (FLAP), a program through Community Legal Services that helps educate and assist individuals choosing to represent themselves in court matters – to be an associate member of the team. “Within about 20 minutes, we knew she was our third piece, and she joined as a partner instead,” says Duenas. Today, the team of strong women is dedicated to working with clients for the best possible outcome, pointing to cases wherein they are able to assist in formalizing adoptions as among the most heartwarming and poignant. The women – all mothers – are also dedicated to advocating for work-life balance. “We work hard for so many families across Arizona, and in return, we work hard to be there for all of the big and small moments with our own families, both with our twoand four-legged children,” smiles Duenas. With an estimated 276,000 followers on Instagram, 1.5 million followers on TikTok and 974,000 subscribers on YouTube, busy mom of two Winny Hayes has reached social media influencer status. Her fun and approachable videos and images feature colorful, easy-to-make dinners and lunches that she feeds her family, and they receive hundreds of thousands of regular views. “I have two kids, ages 8 and 9, who were born 11 months apart,” Hayes says. “My son was a great eater until he was about 18 months old and then he became very picky. I was freaking out trying to find solutions, so I’d do different things like take his food to the park and experiment with packing Bento boxes because then the food didn’t touch. So, it started from there.”

As time went on, Hayes packed more creative lunches for her husband and growing children. She focused on imaginative but easy-to-make recipes, including dinners that could be repurposed for delicious lunches the next day. Her specialty is healthy, colorful and vibrant meals that kids actually want to eat. She’s all about being efficient and saving time without sacrificing flavor. “I never realized my passion until I started doing this, but honestly, I love cooking, packing lunches and helping fellow busy parents,” she shares.

ROTISSERIE CHICKEN ORZO SOUP Ingredients: • 1 tablespoon butter • 1/2 cup each, diced celery, carrots and onion • 1/2 cup orzo • 4 cups broth • 2 cups shredded rotisserie chicken • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme • 2 bay leaves • Fresh parsley Seasonings: • 3/4 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon each black pepper, granulated onion, ground ginger, ground turmeric and garlic Directions: • In a pot over medium heat, melt butter and add diced celery, carrots and onion. Add a pinch of salt and stir. Cook for about 5 minutes. • Add the orzo and mix it in with the veggies, let this cook for 2 minutes. • Add the seasonings and stir. After about a minute, add the broth, shredded rotisserie chicken, thyme and bay leaves. Stir and let it come to a boil. Reduce heat to low and cook for 8 minutes. Sprinkle parsley and enjoy.

CHINESE CHICKEN SALAD Ingredients: • 2 cups of greens (a combination of napa cabbage, slaw mix and romaine) • 1/4 cup shredded carrots • 1/4 red bell pepper, sliced • 2 tablespoons green onion, sliced • 1/4 cup wonton strips • 5 oz. shredded rotisserie chicken • 4 oz. mandarin orange Dressing • 1 tablespoon soy sauce • 2 tablespoons vinegar • 1 teaspoon hoisin sauce • 2 teaspoons sesame oil • 1/2 teaspoon sugar • 1 teaspoon freshly grated ginger Directions: • Combine the dressing ingredients in a mason jar and shake. • Combine the salad ingredients, pour desired amount of dressing and toss. • If you are taking this to work in a lunch container, separate the mandarin orange, wonton strips and dressing.

Helping Kids Be At Their Best FIVE WAYS TO NURTURE YOUR CHILD’S MENTAL HEALTH ARTICLE BY BETH DEL VILLE

Back to school is an exciting time for children and parents alike. It's an opportunity for kids to make new friends, explore new activities and learn new skills. It can also be a daunting time where kids feel anxious about the new year and pressure to do well. We spoke with Katey McPherson, a renowned youth mental health advocate and education consultant, and Director of Professional Development for Bark for Schools, about how to support kids as they embark on the new school year. The East Valley resident and mother of four shares her tips for keeping our kids at their best this back-to-school season and throughout the year.

MONITOR DEVICES McPherson says while most parents give their child a phone for safety reasons, she suggests giving a device without internet access. She adds if you’re giving your child a personal device because they are asking for one, “you have to figure out what golden guardrails you want to put around your child. What’s the desired outcome for the device? There’s a lot of pressure in the mom community to just cave because everybody else is doing it. As a mom myself, I have felt that pressure.” McPherson suggests keeping devices out of the bedroom; not allowing access

to devices overnight or in areas that are unsupervised; having a good router that helps filter content and manage Wi-Fi; installing a monitoring app that will alert you to inappropriate material, cyberbullying and other safety issues; know your child’s login credentials; following your child’s social media accounts; and familiarizing yourself with the platforms they are using.

BUILD RESILIENCE Bouncing back from a disappointment or failure can be hard, and even more so for children. “In order to do hard things, you have to do hard things,” says McPherson. Resilience is a skill built over time and through tough experiences. It is easy for parents to step in and intervene in a desire to help save their kids from discomfort, but McPherson suggests taking a step back. “It’s messy out there, and we have to allow them to have some of that mess in order to build that resilience; to be able to advocate for themselves to say ‘don’t call me that name’ or ‘don’t say that.’ Allow your kids to have some pain, because through the pain, they learn how to cope.”

ROLE PLAY To help practice advocating for themselves when those tough situations arise in the real world, McPherson says utilizing role play can help kids practice the CONTINUED > AUGUST 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/A HWAT UKE E

vocabulary needed to stand up for themselves and increase social competence. Another way to help kids build vocabulary is to allow disagreements with siblings. “There are goals in your kids fighting with their siblings; the older kid is typically teaching the younger kid some comebacks that they can use at school.”

UNPLUG TO RECONNECT McPherson suggests ensuring your child gets a good night’s sleep; keeping devices out of the bedroom overnight; having them move their bodies at least 30 minutes a day; and giving kids the ‘8-second hug’ - where you give two 8-second hugs to your child, once in the morning and once at night. She also recommends connecting as a family where no technology is allowed, like getting out in nature or playing board games as a family, and keeping devices away from the dinner table and during car rides to allow time for family conversation.

The Arizona Humane Society is looking for a few good teenagers, especially those who have a special place in their hearts for pets. The Arizona Humane Society’s Humane Teens program is a unique youth leadership program offered for teens ages 14 to 17 who have an interest in the health and wellness of animals. According to Kelsey Dickerson, Arizona Humane Society spokesperson, this program is a great way for students to get involved. “Becoming a Humane Teen is a special commitment to the Arizona Humane

Society that requires 24 hours of service within the fall or spring school semester. This unique program is a great first step into the workforce for teens interested in developing life skills like accountability, appropriate communication and ambition.” Applications will start being accepted in August for the Fall 2022 semester, and the program has a fee of $195. Upon acceptance into the program, teens can apply for available scholarships to help with the cost. Dickerson says the skills learned by the teens during this program are invaluable for today and the student’s future. “Throughout the semester, teens learn hands-on animal handling skills, will help lead youth programs and presentations, as well as assist with the daily care of exotic animals and Arizona Humane Society's homeless pets. This career discovery experience also gives participants invaluable mentorship and leadership opportunities throug collaborative experiences between the Humane Teens, different departments at the Arizona Humane Society, and other animal rescues and sanctuaries.” The Humane Teens program officially launched back in 2016 but has become a more structured program over the past few years. The program takes place at the Humane Society’s Nina Mason Pulliam South Mountain Campus, which is located at 1521 W. Dobbins Road in Phoenix. Teens and parents are encouraged to visit the Arizona Humane Society website at AZHumane.org/HumaneTeens for more information on the program and details on how and when to apply. The Humane Society provides different virtual and in-person youth programs for children of all ages and abilities including youth camps, birthday parties, Reading Fur Fun, volunteering from home and more.
