Grateful for Growth ADVANCED DENTAL HEALTH EXPANDS THEIR TEAM TO BETTER SERVE LOCAL PATIENTS
ARTICLE BY MICHELLE TALSMA EVERSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHANNON LIEBROCK
Advanced Dental Health, located in the heart of Ahwatukee, has stood the test of time. The well-known practice has provided quality dental care for local families for over 30 years. Recently, Advanced Dental Health has grown and Shelly Hasch, the practice’s office manager, says they are thankful to have the opportunity to continue to serve generations of patients. “We love the Ahwatukee community,” Hasch says. “In 2020, we moved into a new office that is right in the heart of Ahwatukee and we feel so fortunate that patients keep finding us and allow us to serve them.” Advanced Dental Health offers its patients everything from preventative general dentistry to cosmetic dentistry, same-day crowns, root canals, and everything in between. “We love the Ahwatukee community,” Hasch says. “In 2020, we moved into a new office that is right in the heart of Ahwatukee and we feel so fortunate that patients keep finding us and allow us to serve them.” — Shelly Hasch
registered dental hygienist at Advanced Dental Health, says that their practice’s team works hard to make quality dental care convenient for their patients. “We have lasted so long because of the quality of care we provide and our focus on the latest cutting-edge technology,” Peyer explains. “We offer as many services as we can in-house so patients can have all of their needs taken care of in one place.” As we enter a season of gratitude, both Peyer and Hasch emphasize that Advanced Dental Health’s team is thankful to be growing. They’ve recently added an additional dentist, dental hygienist, and dental assistant. These new roles allow the practice to expand the types of services they can offer their local patient base. “Before, we sometimes had to refer patients out for certain procedures and surgeries,” Hasch says. “But now, with a new doctor, we can offer surgeries we weren’t able to before.” The new doctor is Dr. Richard Sinn, D.M.D., who just started at the practice in September. “I’m excited to join the team at Advanced Dental Health,” Dr. Sinn says.

“I am passionate about dental surgery and restoring smiles through healthy teeth and gums.” Having been a part of the local community for decades, Peyer and Hasch share that Advanced Dental Health is all about supporting other local businesses and organizations in Ahwatukee. She notes that, while much of the practice has grown from word-of-mouth, they have also been discovered by new patients on social media, such as Facebook’s popular Ahwatukee 411 group. “Local patients should know that we offer a variety of services, and now, before the end of the year, is a great time to visit so they can take advantage of any remaining dental health insurance benefits,” Hasch says. With a mission to, “Come to work every day to create beautiful smiles and share our vision of dentistry,” the team at Advanced Dental Health is grateful for past success and thankful for the expanded services they’re now able to offer their beloved Ahwatukee community. adhaz.com

Something to Smile About
ADVANCED DENTAL HEALTH WELCOMES DR. RICHARD SINN, D.M.D. ARTICLE BY MICHELLE TALSMA EVERSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHANNON LIEBROCK
In September, Advanced Dental Health welcomed Dr. Richard Sinn, D.M.D., to help bolster their practice’s dental surgery offerings. “I believe in a beneficial relationship with patients where we complement one another,” Dr. Sinn explains. “I know many patients are nervous about dental surgery— but surgery is actually my passion, so I do my best to make sure they are comfortable and as stress- and anxiety-free as possible.” A graduate of nearby Midwestern University, among other educational accolades, Dr. Sinn specializes in dental surgery, with extensive research done in implants. He says that his goal is to create a low pressure, low stress environment for patients. “And if at all possible, I want to make them laugh,” he says. He adds that his motivation is treating each patient like he would a family member. “It sounds simple, but often coming to the dentist—especially for surgery—can be anxiety-inducing, so I strive to treat patients how I would want myself or my parents to be treated,” he says. “Essentially, the ‘golden rule’ always applies.” Dr. Sinn’s dental passions are working with students (he teaches!) and restorative dental surgery. Outside of work, he enjoys traveling, staying active, sports, and frequenting local dog parks with his furry companion, Chunk.

Anybody can make the rice krispies with very little effort and adults love them the most.” INGREDIENTS • 2 oz salted or unsalted butter • 8 cups of Rice Krispies cereal • 16 oz marshmallows • 1 teaspoon of heavy cream • Salt to taste DIRECTIONS • Add butter to a pot. Turn on low to medium flame. After a couple of minutes butter will begin to brown and foam. • Add marshmallows and heavy cream. You can also add a pinch of salt. • Melt marshmallows with the butter add the Rice Krispies and place into a greased pan. • You can sprinkle more salt on top. I like to add gold flakes, sprinkles, crushed Butterfingers or mini chocolate chips.

In an effort to bring a fresh spin on the holiday classics, I infused this dish into a perfect holiday delicacy. The aromatic combination of lobster, herbs, and lemon make this a mouthwatering dish to serve on Thanksgiving.” INGREDIENTS • 2 cups Chardonnay • 8oz lobster tails • 1/4 pound of prosciutto - chopped small • Sage - bunch sliced • 1/4 cup vegetable stock • 1 tablespoon cornstarch + 1 tablespoon of chilled water • Fresh rosemary - 2-3 branches

1 baguette sliced 5 tablespoons of Creme fraiche 1 lemon + zest 3 tablespoons butter 1 teaspoon Hickory Smoked Sea Salt • 1 teaspoon Kampot peppercorns
DIRECTIONS • In a large pan, cook prosciutto over medium heat until crispy and remove. • Fill pan with olive oil, add rosemary. Heat over low heat for 5 minutes. Remove rosemary. Turn heat to medium, add sliced baguette. Cook until golden. Remove from oil, dry on paper towels. Spread creme fraiche over one side of baguette. • In a pot, bring wine to a boil then reduce medium. Add lobster to wine, steam 5 -7 minutes. Remove and reserve meat. Slice lobster into thin pieces. In a small saucepan melt butter, add sage branches with stems and leaves. Cook for 2-3 minutes. • Add lemon juice (1 tablespoon), vegetable stock, 2 tablespoons of Creme fraiche. Bring to a boil, reduce heat. Add cornstarch slurry. Stir sauce for 1 minute. Flowers by
Design How to make holiday gatherings gorgeous with fall florals, featuring expert tips from local florist Suzie Martinez
Floral arrangements bring a sense of comfort and sophistication to holiday décor. The right centerpiece at the Thanksgiving table or a bouquet in your living room can make guests feel cozy and welcomed. Not only that, it’s a great way to add something new to what you traditionally decorate with every year. Nostalgia combined with celebrating the uniqueness of the current year is an important part of our holiday traditions. Holidays also give us an opportunity to decide, for instance, whether we feel connected to traditional colors and schemes, or whether we need an exciting change. Suzie Martinez of Flowers and Gifts by Suzie (@Suzies_Flowers_And_Gifts) shares how to put together autumn florals for any celebration. Here’s what she suggests:

Tip 1: De c ide on you r color pa let te . Think about your home, style, celebration, and what colors best fit that vibe. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box. Oranges, reds, and yellows make for a beautiful and traditional fall color scheme, but note the jewel tones in Martinez’s arrangements. Whatever color matches your home and sense of style can be a perfect autumn bouquet.
Tip 2: Choose a n i n spi rat iona l f lower. One way to choose this flower is to think about the mood you want to invoke in your décor. Do you want to highlight the bounty of the harvest season, or the sense of nostalgia and reflection that comes with these family-centered holidays? Choose a flower that represents that emotion for you.
Tip 3: Add tex t u re a nd dept h to h ig h l ig ht you r i n spi rat iona l f lower. Choose plants that help draw your eye to this flower. Contrast light and dark colors in order to spotlight the star of the arrangement. And don’t cut your plants all at one height. Tall plants paired with shorter plants create interest in the piece and bring attention to each element of the arrangement.
Tip 4: C on sider t rend s , but don’t be a f ra id to do somet h i ng d i f ferent a nd u n ique! Martinez says that “boho” is very trendy right now, with its earthy tones and feathery textures, as is the color gold. Bring those elements into your floral arrangements if you love them, but also don’t be afraid to try something new. Fresh florals are ephemeral, Martinez points out, so you don’t have to commit to them as a permanent part of your décor.

Ahwatukee Eats brings community together while paying it forward to those in need

G IV IN G B AC K | FOOD + BE VE RAGE
Ahwatukee Eats volunteers Kaitlyn White, Carrie Newcomb and founder Dani Martinez
During the 2007 holiday party, Bell Bank president and chief executive officer Michael Solberg announced a new initiative: Pay It Forward. Through it, employees would be given funds outside of their regular paychecks to support those in need. Today, Pay It Forward grants full-time employee $1,000 and part-time employees $500 to use annually, recently topping $22 million in total giving to date. “In 2014, my friend and colleague Falon Kerby and I decided to pool our funds to create something special for the community,” says Dani Martinez, Bell Bank mortgage marketing regional manager. “My husband is a chef, and we’d been to several foodie events, so Falon and I were inspired to do something with food trucks.” Martinez and Kerby began the process to get an event permit and contacted food trucks statewide to see who might be open to participating. Permits and partners in hand, they approached their Bell branch for help with the locale. “Bell got us permission to use the common area outside of our Ahwatukee branch for our first event, which took place in April 2014 over lunch,” says Martinez. “We would have been happy if four people showed, but when hundreds came, we knew we were on to something.” One event turned to two, and two to the nearly monthly event it is today. (They take off summers when too hot.) “We now host Ahwatukee Eats in the massive parking lot of our neighbor, Desert Dentistry, and it takes place the third Friday of each month – save for in November and December when it is the second Friday to avoid proximity to holidays. We also do it a 5 p.m. now,” says Martinez.
“Guests can expect a complimentary petting zoo courtesy of Bell Bank, balloons, youth craft tables, raffles, giveaways, live music from School of Rock Ahwatukee, and more.” While most of the event is free, the food trucks do charge for their dishes as do some artisan vendors, but a portion of proceeds are donated back to Ahwatukee Eats to enhance the complimentary activities for the next month – funding the recent Trunk or Treat during the October Ahwatukee Eats, for example – as well as to help support one local organization in need. “A portion of funds are used to support them, but we also do a drive during the event for a chosen organization as well,” says Martinez. “For example, we have partnered with the Kyrene School District, asking guests to bring non-perishable food items to stock their community pantry.” Ahwatukee Eats has supported more than two dozen organizations over the years. In addition to the Kyrene School District, the event has benefitted Love Society, which creates opportunities for others to give back; Maggie’s Place, which offers a support system to women experiencing homelessness during pregnancy and baby's first year; and Diaper Bank of Central Arizona, which supplies hundreds of thousands of diapers to nonprofits countywide. “We just keep getting bigger and bigger, which allows us to do more and more good,” says Martinez, adding that thanks to a promotion Kerby has had to step back a bit, but fellow Bell colleague Mari Bersch has picked up the baton to help continue growing Ahwatukee Eats for years to come.

Your Autumn Dinner Party Is Served Catering experts Chef Kyle and Hannah Williams, owners of Savor & Swirl culinary company, create an outdoor dinner party with chef-driven perennial dishes served in beautiful seasonal settings.
For this alfresco Autumn Dinner Party, Chef Kyle draws on favorite fall recipes updated for a modern palate and paired with wine selections to complement the bountiful feast. Hannah creates an iconic autumn ambiance using artisanal table settings and mixed flannels for each guest to blanket any chill on a brisk evening. Whether for Friendsgiving, Thanksgiving or a new November tradition, it’s time to get outdoors again surrounded in sweater-weather coziness while sharing bites and clinks with family and friends.

Insider Tips for Hosting:
• Build a menu around the season. “In November, people crave turkey, sage stuffing and cranberry sauce,” Chef Kyle says. “Autumn dinners mean bigger-course meals with varied proteins, like turkey, duck and sirloin, hearty starches, and good fall produce, especially root vegetables such as butternut squash and pumpkin.” • Always greet guests with a beverage and appetizers. “Offer champagne for wine-lovers or a sparkling drink or signature cocktail. It’s all about serving guests to the highest caliber,” Kyle says. • Draw inspiration from the season’s changing colors, cooler temps and lower humidity to move back outdoors. “Think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.” • “You can’t go wrong with fresh flowers,” Hannah says, “but keep bouquets low to not interfere with conversation flowing. For fall, I like richer, jewel-toned florals to mix and match and keep whimsical. I vary glass vases with burnished brass for warm fall vibes.” • An easy but thoughtful detail is to put a simple menu at each place setting, so guests know what to expect. “Add a pen, so guests can jot tasting notes, especially for wine pairings or multiple courses,” Hannah says. “Guests can share comments, then take the menu home as a sweet reminder of the event.” • Follow the French principle of mise en place or everything in place before your event. “This is actually our company’s name,” Kyle says. “It’s that important to us. Make sure the wines are all open, cocktails are pre-made, place settings are out, candles are lit and music is playing. When guests arrive, it gives that wow-factor and shows you intentionally made them feel special.” • To build confidence as a host, start small and practice. “Keep the menu and guest list small,” Kyle says. “Choose recipes you already have confidence in. If you make a great Beef Stroganoff, then go with that. People will love it!” • As fun as it is to dine outside, always have an indoors back-up plan. “We’ve had to bring it indoors before,” Hannah says. “It’s still fun.” CONTINUED > NOVEMB ER 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . • If Brussels sprouts are large, cut in quarters. • Rendering bacon means extracting the bacon fat which adds a lot of flavor to the dish.
Wine Pairing
According to Savor & Swirl, wine pairing doesn’t need to be overly complicated for a casual outdoor dinner party. Have a lighter and fuller body style of white and red available with some sparkling thrown in. “Lighter to medium-bodied wines from Rhône Valley, Italy or California would be a good place to start,” they state. “Viognier is one of our favorite wines that goes great with fall-inspired cuisines. Pinot Noir wine goes great with just about any food. Lean towards California or Willamette Valley for a new-world style and go with France for a more earthy, old-world style. A big bold Napa Cab would fall in perfectly for the grilled ribeye steak! Cheers!”

HEALTHY HOLIDAYS AHEAD Five tips to help you stay healthy and happy during the holidays ARTICLE BY GRETCHEN PAHIA Holidays are a time for celebrating, and one can often find themselves surrounded by delicious treats, making it hard to keep on the healthy track. John Winters, owner & Director of Training at Lifestyle Performance Training Health Club (LifestylePerformanceTraining.com), offers some quick and useful tips to keep fit and healthy this holiday season.
1. EXERCISE CONSISTENTLY Don’t let go of your exercise regimen just because it is the holidays. There is enough time to enjoy and relax as well as continue healthy habits.
2. FOCUS ON STRENGTH TRAINING VS. CARDIO Strength training over cardio will help you have a higher metabolic impact during recovery time as well as help assure you maintain muscle mass.
3. IT IS OKAY TO SPLURGE Holiday parties can be filled with tons of sweet treats. Just budget for one tasty treat then you won’t feel so guilty about enjoying one.
4. EAT A HEALTHY SNACK BEFORE ATTENDING A HOLIDAY PARTY Do not go into the event hungry from a day of fasting. This can often lead to overindulgences on sugary treats. Eat a lower calorie snack ahead of time and drink plenty of water.
5. EVERYTHING IN MODERATION Complete deprivation of things can lead to bigger issues. Have the things you like, just in smaller quantities.
