ourism businesses across Moray Speyside voted overwhelmingly in favour of introducing a Tourism Business Improvement District - securing the future of the region’s tourism industry and ensuring that tourism development and destination marketing of the Moray Speyside area will continue into the future. A Tourism Improvement District (Tourism BID) is a proven and effective way of investing in an area’s economic development. Similar schemes elsewhere have significantly boosted visitor numbers. The result in Moray follows nearby Inverness Loch Ness Tourism BID recently being re-elected for a second term, and a brand-new Tourism BID has also been established in the Tweed Valley in recent months.

75% of tourism businesses who voted said yes to a sustainable and financially secure model which will build on the region’s tourism growth of recent years and take the region’s tourism performance to the next level through the delivery of an ambitious 5-year business plan. Last year tourism was worth £130 million to the Moray economy, with the region welcoming almost 800,000 visitors who supported more than 2,800 local jobs.The new Business Improvement District will invest more than £1m in tourism development over the course of its 5-year term, ensuring that our wonderful region is able to compete with other better funded and more famous areas and maintains its place as a world-class visitor destination. The new Tourism BID company; Visit Moray Speyside will begin its work officially on 1st April 2020. 3

BUSINESS REVIVED

hen Joe Brandie, the much-loved and well-respected landlord of The Fiddichside Inn in Craigellachie, died in September 2017, people far and wide realised that this was the end of an era. Since 1919 Joe’s late wife, Dorothy, and her family had run this unpretentious little pub next to the River Fiddich and the bridge that spans it. In all those years very little had changed and it had become a must-visit for locals and visitors alike, who would travel from all points of the compass to spend time in Dorothy and, latterly, Joe’s company. It is unique and the fear was that it would either lie empty and unloved or would be bought and perhaps turned into a family home. In 2019 it was indeed bought but the new owner, Ali Hunter (with her son Guy), had no intention of doing anything but continuing to run it as a pub and meeting place. Over the past few months renovation work has given the tiny pub a new lease of life whilst still retaining

its original features. Plans are afoot for future developments but in the meantime the pub opens its doors three nights a week. These days and times will change as the new owner and staff bed in and find their feet. During the warmer days bring a book and sit outside in the sun trap or lose yourself in your thoughts as you watch the river gurgle by. Or come inside when the local ‘parliament’ sits on a Sunday and engage in lively discussion about the hot topic of the day. You might enter as a stranger but you will definitely leave as a friend. Opening times at present are: Fridays 5pm to 9.30pm: Saturdays 12.30pm to 9.30pm and Sundays 12.30pm to 6.30pm. From the 13th February the pub will also be open on Thursdays from 5pm to 9.30pm. First Minister delivers Immortal Memory in Keith

icola Sturgeon delivered a magnificent Immortal Memory to a 240 capacity audience of SNP members and friends at the Longmore Community Hall in Keith on Sat 1st February. The Moray CA fundraising committee were delighted to be able to secure the attendance of not only the First Minister but also Keith Brown MSP Deputy Leader and Christina McKelvie MSP Minister for older people and equalities who entertained the guests with their Toast to the Lassies and Reply. The speeches had followed a lovely traditional haggis neeps and tatties meal provided by Boogie Woogie, Keith. The Toast to Scotland was by the acclaimed traditional Scottish singer Sheena Wellington, probably best known for performing A Man’s A Man for A’ That at the opening of the Scottish Parliament. Sheena was concerned about following the hilarious speech from Christina McKelvie but she did not disappoint. A very entertaining speech enhanced by Sheena’s beautiful singing voice as she sang various verses of the Bard’s songs.

The MC for the evening was Moray’s own Richard Lochhead MSP.

The Country Quines also from the Keith area provided the rest of the musical entertainment.

The address to the haggis, a flawless Tam O’Shanter and musical entertainment was provided by the very talented Dodie and his sisters Eilidh and Kirsty Simmers from Keith.

An excellent night was had by all who attended and many souvenir photographs were taken with the First Minister who generously gave her time speaking with everyone.

EU Citizens EU citizens who come to live and work in Scotland make an invaluable contribution to our society, culture and economy. Particularly in rural areas like Moray, they work in key rural businesses, they make their lives here, raise their children here and contribute to local life. And we want them to stay, not least to help boost rural populations. Although the UK Government have said that EU citizens are not required to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme until December 2020 - so far over 120,000 applications have been received – it is still less than half of the estimated total number of EU nationals living in Scotland. I would therefore encourage any EU nationals to seek settled status. Anyone who knows an EU citizen in their workplace or

community, please encourage them to apply to stay – there is help available from Citizens Advice Scotland. EU citizens who have been in the UK for five continuous years will be able to apply for “settled status”. EU citizens who have been less, can apply for “pre-settled status”. After five years continuous residency they can then apply for “settled status”. The Citizens’ Rights Project and a new charity Settled have joined forces to help EU citizens with applications to the UK Government’s EU Settlement Scheme. The Settled programme provides advice and support to vulnerable people and those with complex needs. Citizens Advice Scotland operate a free national helpline as part of the Advice and Support Service.

laiming independence for Scotland as a sovereign state, The Declaration of Arbroath is a very important document in Scottish history, created in the Abbey of Arbroath almost six years after the landmark Battle of Bannockburn. In that battle in June 1314 Scottish forces led by King Robert the Bruce defeated a huge army of English, Welsh and Irish troops loyal to Edward II who had marched north to challenge Bruce’s men as they laid siege to the Englishheld Stirling Castle Bruce had demanded loyalty from Scottish supporters of King John Balliol who had been ousted from the throne, on pain of surrendering their lands. Despite there being several claimants to the Scottish throne, Balliol was controversially installed as king in 1292 by supporters of Edward I. However Balliol who had acquired the derisory nickname of “Toom Tabard” (empty coat) acted in such a subservient way to the English king that after four years he was deposed—taken to the Tower of London and replaced by A Council of Twelve Scottish nobles who then

appointed a number of Guardians to govern Scotland during periods of interregnum. Sir William Wallace (c.1270-1305) was one such Guardian from 1297-8 and in his revolt against King Edward I he was supported by Sir Robert the Bruce. Wallace was executed on the orders of Edward in London and is the subject of the stirring but factually inaccurate film Braveheart (1995). Robert the Bruce was appointed a Guardian from 1298-1300. He could trace his blood line back to King David of Scotland (c.1084-1183) but after mortally wounding rival claimant to the throne John Comyn inside a church in Dumfries in February 1306 Bruce was excommunicated by the Pope. However he was crowned King a little over a month later then had to go on the run, conducting an increasingly successful guerrilla campaign with

a series of military victories against English forces for eight years before the crowning success of Bannockburn. Though now on the backfoot, Edward II refused to give up his claim to Scotland for the remainder of the decade. In retaliation the Scottish nobles came to the Abbey of Arbroath in April 1320 and put their seals on the Declaration document which was then dispatched to Pope John XXII at Avignon. The Latin text asserted that King Robert was indeed the rightful heir to the Scottish throne and claimed Scotland to be independent with the right to use military force in its defence. The rescinding of Bruce’s excommunication was also requested. Vitally, it emphasised that the independence was the prerogative of the Scottish nation and they could replace Bruce if he acted unfairly. Four years later the Pope ruled in favour. In 1327 Edward III ousted his father and peace was concluded between Scotland and England via the Treaty of EdinburghNorthampton the following year. Almost two dozen times commencing in 1947townsfolk of Arbroath (nicknamed Red Lichties because of a light some say was lit in the

but a much enjoyed son et lumière experience before a paying audience in the grounds of the Abbey. As a callow youth I took part in the Pageants of 1964 and 1966, which were put on as a tourist attraction at great expense. These very colourful events, directed in my time by local newspaper editor, thespian and historian George Shepherd, were staged within the nave of the ruined abbey—open to the elements— as a loose representation of the “signing” of the Declaration by Robert the Bruce’s supporters. The actual event in 1320 was known to have taken place over several days (possibly even weeks) in a small upper floor room in the Abbey (and in different places around Scotland) but for the purposes of spectacle was played out in the grounds of the Abbey before large crowds seated on specially erected stands along the south side of the nave. I realise now that the production, though evocative was full of anachronisms, not the least of which were the intoning of “Ave Verum Corpus” by Mozart (!) by the monks (members of Arbroath Male Voice Choir) as they processed the

length of the nave and the arrival of King Robert on a Clydesdale horse. Because most of the nobles were illiterate they attached seals to the Declaration, though my recollection is that in our production they were each given a quill to sign at the table, as shown in the photo below. All but one of the white surpliced acolytes and the standard bearers shown in the photo were friends of mine from Arbroath High School: I am in the photo (partly hidden) holding a crozier, on the left of the Abbot. Top left within a sandstone window is the shadowy figure of Councillor Frank Thornton dressed in chainmail, who gave a running commentary and who wrote The Laurel Crown a companion drama about the trial of William Wallace which was played as the second part of the evening. This had fairly primitive production values with all the dialogue prerecorded and the actors miming, as this was long before the era of radio mikes. Still, I look back at the Pageants very fondly. Medieval copy of the original letter dispatched to Pope John XXII in Avignon will be displayed for the first time in 15 years at The National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh from 27th March to 26th April 2020.

ollowing the success of Oor Wullie last year and the Dolphins in Aberdeen in 2014 we now have the Lighthouse Trail.

In Autumn 2020, we will shine a light across the north-east, Moray, Orkney and Shetland with over 30 lighthouses designed and created by some of the area’s most talented artists continuing the region’s cultural revolution. This project is brought to you by CLAN Cancer Support, in partnership with Wild in Art, to raise significant funds for and awareness of the vital support provided by CLAN to people affected by cancer across the north-east, Moray, Orkney and Shetland. Wild in Art is one of the leading producers of spectacular, mass-appeal public art events which connect businesses, artists and communities through the power of creativity and innovation. 2020 is Visit Scotland’s year of Scotland’s Coasts and Waters, which will be celebrated with a programme of activity designed to inspire both visitors and locals to explore and experience our unrivalled shores. This ties in perfectly with our trail plans and is especially pertinent to the north-east of Scotland which has been reliant on marine-based endeavours from fishing to the oil and gas industry. The lighthouse trail will take people on a cultural tour of the north-

east, Moray, Orkney and Shetland, letting them discover and engage with our region like never before. Light the North will become a three-dimensional canvas for creativity. Artists were invited to enter their designs by the end of January. Designs were welcomed in any medium – traditional to new media, fine art to illustrations, graffiti and mosaic. The very first lighthouse designed by the fantastic Katie Guthrie (KMG) was revealed on the 22nd January There are lots of opportunities for you to get involved. May I suggest that this should not be reserved for that one day a year? I am sure for many this is not the case? Never the less the 14th is but upon us, so go on treat that special person. Of course the second date refers to a very important date in the calendar, Motherâ€™s Day. Celebrated on different days in many parts of the world but here in Scotland it is 22nd March. This is the day for us to show our appreciation to our Mothers, Mums Mithers, if we are blessed to have them with us, unfortunately we are not all, but we can still honour their memory on that day.

he setting could not be more perfect. A period mansion house set in spacious gardens and with a river running by – a recipe for relaxed dining. The Haugh restaurant has been tastefully remodelled in keeping with the period features of the hotel. The décor is calm and inviting. Tables are spaced thoughtfully, the service is quiet and attentive and the menus offer dishes that appeal to all tastes. The lunch menu is both varied and inexpensive and one is spoiled for choice. Four of us gather for a working lunch not long after the New Year; we are shown into the comfortable lounge and drinks are brought while we study the menu. Once at our beautifully decorated table, the anticipation rises as we have heard good reports about this restaurant and when the dishes are brought out we are not disappointed. Two of us have ordered baked potatoes, one has chicken goujons and the fourth member of the team has opted for a salad which bears no resemblances to any salad we have come across before. It is a riot of colour – and delicious to boot. All of our dishes get the thumbs up; they are well prepared, very well presented and just enough to satisfy. The subject of dessert is mooted. We are all conscious of festive excesses so there are furtive glances all round. Even though we are well fed, the prospect of the cheesecake of the day is too hard to resist. The solution? One portion and four spoons. To the waitress’s eternal credit, she did not bat an eye and the cheesecake is duly presented. And was it good! Very creamy without being

overpoweringly rich – 10 out of 10 in fact and minimal guilt attached. Coffee and tea follow back in the lounge. We could all sit back and chat until the light fades but other commitments call and sadly we have to leave. But we will be back, of that there is no doubt. estling in just over three acres of private and secluded gardens and wooded areas, Isla Bank House is the perfect choice for overnight stays, longer holidays, celebratory family get-togethers, corporate events, romantic breaks and pre-wedding accommodation for the bridal party. The imposing house, built around 1873 for the Earls of Seafield and with quite a chequered history, is now in the careful hands of Vena Raffle and Nick Kimber. They gave up their busy London life, twenty three floors above street level in a purpose-built, almost-allglass apartment building, to put down roots on terra firma some 590 miles north in Keith. Even though Vena is half Scottish, it is still something of a quantum leap in anyoneâ€™s book. In just over a year they have transformed the house into a quietly understated haven of peace and tranquillity. Every single original feature has been retained and, where necessary, lovingly tweaked. Log fires crackle satisfyingly during the colder days; leather sofas invite you to sink into them, read the papers whilst nursing a single malt from the comprehensive collection in the lounge and to just generally relax and let the magic of the house do its work. All the rooms are in keeping with the age of the house and yet the addition of carefully selected

antiques give the entire house a most modern feel. They have kept to a semiminimalistic style; nothing is cluttered and yet the generous rooms feel cosy and welcoming. There are three bedrooms to choose from, thus ensuring that cosy sense of intimacy. This means that every guest receives the very best of attention and this attention spills over into their breakfasts. In a very short space of time they have received excellent reviews. Richly deserved. But they are not resting on their laurels. The house has a walled garden and also various outbuildings which will be developed in the fullness of time. This couple is here to stay and have grand plans for the future. The north east is now their forever home, they love this house and intend to channel all their energies into making it a centre of warm hospitality and memorable experiences. 23

It was the annual sale at Avorio Bridal, the ideal time to attract future brides to Twisted Willow and show them what floral offerings were available. BUSINESS: NEW PREMISES

freshly painted cream exterior, with grey trim, an understated window display and a large green and white sign beckon you into Sadie Barronâ€™s new shop in Cornhill. For years this building had remained unoccupied and very definitely unloved. It had been on Sadieâ€™s radar for quite a while but the time had not been right for her to take the next step in growing her interiors business.

However, when the time was right, Sadie made her move, acquired the building and set to with a will to transform the building into her modern, spacious new showroom and workshop. It was indeed a labour of love, back-breaking and time consuming but, with thanks to willing hands belonging to friends and family, it is now a reality.

The interior stops you in your tracks. It is carefully thought out and offers everything you could wish for in an interiors showroom. One entire wall is given over to black painted shelving housing all Sadie’s fabric books. The fabric area has colourful sofas and an oversized coffee table where Sadie can display her fabric samples to best advantage, whilst chatting with her customers about their designs over a cup of tea or coffee. Her reception desk (which has to be seen to be believed and would not be out of place in an upmarket London shop) was designed by her and built by her father. This space contains all the electronic wizadry that powers the shop – blinds that are controlled by remote control and lighting that can be programmed at the flick of a switch. Sadie has complemented her fabrics with carefully chosen furniture and accessories, which will constantly change as pieces are bought and replaced. The country inspired corner offers a mix of fragrances and household items, showcased in a white painted Welsh dresser and backed by a vibrant – but not overpowering – floral wallpaper. First visits will elicit a litany of oohs and aahs – you cannot help but be impressed by how Sadie has set out her showroom. The workshop is just that – a fully functioning workspace with a large centre table and storage around the walls. It is, despite the fact that it is a work place, extremely neat and tidy and no-one would be less than impressed about how organised it is. Sadie is fortunate to be able to call upon the skills of three sewing ladies whose work, if the sample curtains and blinds are anything to go by, is exquisite. Perfection personified. Highly

qualified people work with and for Sadie – proof indeed that like recognises like. Mention must be made here of the invaluable assistance given to Sadie by the following tradespeople, without whom the entire project would have taken far longer than it did. Hats off to Gary Dibben (painter and decorator from Turriff); Steven Johnston (electrician from Cornhill); John Barron (plumber from Aberchirder); Brian Hutcheson (joiner from Cornhill); Ricky Scott (signwriter and graphics from Newmill); SLJ Windows and Doors (from Turriff) and, last but by no means least, West Carpets (from Banff). A huge thank you to them all. New members are very welcome, absolutely no auditions, no requirement to read music, just a love of singing. Rehearsals for the Christmas Carol Concert commence in September.

his year marks the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the Buckie Choral Union, which came into being following a BBC 'Songs of Praise', which brought together members of local church choirs. Following the broadcast a number of participants had so enjoyed the experience of singing together that they decided to form a Choral Union. Amongst these were John Fraser, who became the choir's first conductor and Sandy Silbergh who went on to be its Chairman for twenty five years. Two of their earliest performances were Handel's Messiah, which was performed on the 17th of December 1970 in the North Church, followed by Bach's Christmas Oratorio in 1972.

Donald Barr subsequently took over the baton in 1973 and conducted the choir until his retirement in 2005 forming, in the process, a

hugely fruitful relationship with Peter Zanre's Moray Chamber Orchestra which lasted until Donald's retirement. Our third conductor is Anne Corbet who took over from Donald in 2005 and who remains our conductor to this day. Visiting the choir on one of their rehearsal evenings the members reminisced with me about the years with Donald Barr, of whom I have many of my own memories. One member describing Donald, said “Donald was all charisma and would always give it welly, Donald was unique.” “With Donald it was great fun but a bit erratic, I think we sometimes wondered how on earth we managed to pull it off? But we always did.” “Anne is apparently a very different style which I witnessed. Anne is very dedicated in rehearsals. Another member quoted” Once Anne has

finished with us we are so well rehearsed we can go on stage with confidence.” It would seem every conductor has their own idiosyncrasies. As you can imagine, there are many people who are actively involved in the choir and they all serve for many years. There have been a number of rehearsal accompanists, including Margaret Mitchell, Sheila McKay, and Gay Cadenhead who, until very recently, accompanied the choir for 28 years. To help meet the costs of employing professional soloists and an orchestra to accompany them when singing a major choral work, the choir was originally subsidised by the Scottish Arts Council, the National Federation of Music Societies and The Arts Council of Moray. In order to qualify for these grants the choir had to perform at least one choral work each year. To this day, the choir performs two

concerts per year, one secular work and one choral work. These concerts are held in March/ April, to coincide with Easter, and one in November/December to celebrate Christmas. Major works have included Handel's Messiah, Haydn's Creation and The Seasons, Mozart, Faure, Verdi and Rutter's Requiems, Mendelssohn's Elijah, Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man, Bach's St. John Passion, Schubert's Mass in G, Beethoven's Choral Symphony, Stainer's Crucifixion, Elgar's Bavarian Highlands, and Brittens' Ceremony of Carols. In 2018 we performed Howard Goodall’s Eternal Light to mark the centenary of the end of the 1st World War. The choir celebrated its 21st Anniversary in 1991 by performing Handel's Messiah in the Fishermen's Hall. The 25th Anniversary, in 1995, was also celebrated in the Fishermen's Hall with a performance of The Mozart Requiem. To celebrate our up-coming 50th Anniversary, the choir will perform Handel's Messiah on the 18th of April 2020, again in the Fishermen's Hall. 51

sed nearly 6000 times since its launch this August, the new mental health information tool supporting children, young people and families in Moray is off to a strong start. Figures show the most popular areas for information are about Mental Health Therapists and Other Mental Health Support. The ‘Discover Pathways’ website is hosted by local social movement and enterprise Moray Wellbeing Hub CIC, who worked with young people, education workers and Health and Social Care Moray staff to develop the site following the success of their adult version. It features new ‘CHIME Monstars’ characters who give a friendly face to concepts like hope and connection, a core part of wellbeing for all ages. Becky Poyner, Moray Wellbeing Hub CIC Young Champion project lead, is delighted with the progress, “As a young person who experiences my own challenges, having information and tools such as the pathways is an important resource. It creates a focus point and provides children, young people or adults with tools to help them through their mental health journey. I think this resource should be accessible to as many young people as possible. Mental health is a continually changing experience and knowing about this resource can help children and young people to support themselves or others in that.”

As members of the social movement Moray Wellbeing Hub CIC Champions get support such as training and expenses to deliver using their lived experience in communities. They aim to develop more pathways tools as part of their Moray LEADER and Moray Alcohol & Drug Partnership funded project and invite anyone of any age to join them to do so. Their existing adult pathways version launched 9 months ago continues to be used regularly, however Becky encourages this to increase, “With over 8700 uses a year on since it launched, we know more people could be making use of this tool. Together with our colleagues in health we aim to increase awareness and ask that anyone interested gets in touch to arrange an overview for any group or staff team.”As well as outreach to train people on how to support others with the adult tool, courses and workshops for young people using the CHIME ‘Monstars’ are in development for 2020 delivery. Both websites can be found via moraywellbeinghub.org.uk and include a feedback link to share your thoughts for improvement. Hard copies of the tool and posters can be sent to any community, school, or individual on request by email.

mergency heroes will be honoured at the second Moray Blue Light Festival on Saturday 14th March 2020 at Moray College, UHI. The valuable role played by the police, fire, RNLI, RAF, coastguard services and many more will be highlighted during the festival from 12pm – 3pm. ‘Celebrating the services, educating the public’ is the theme of the afternoon. This event is being organised by two Moray College UHI third year event management students, Lorna Leil and Chloe O’Connor, as part of their degree course. “This is a chance to meet your real-life heroes and see what they do on a daily basis.” they said.“We are hoping to raise awareness of the services and also bring the local community together to celebrate them.”

In attendance will be Police Scotland, Fire Scotland, Royal National Lifeboat Institution, HM Coastguard, Police Scotland Youth Volunteers, Moray Inshore Rescue, Safety Camera Scotland, North East Rider Volunteers, Scottish Charity Air Ambulance and 2622 Squadron from RAF Lossiemouth.The Morayvia aeronautical heritage centre team will also be there, along with a range of food vendors and children’s rides. “Last year’s event was very successful, with around

1000 people attending on the day” said Lorna and Chloe.“Sirens were ringing around the carpark as youngsters were allowed experience inside of the emergency vehicles – including being locked in the back of a police van.” The services who appeared in 2019 are eager to return and get involved with the public again. Last year, North East Rider volunteer, Patrick Costello, said “The event has been amazing. I don’t think we expected this amount of interest.” He explained the opportunity for the awareness of the group was invaluable. There will be demonstrations by the Sandpiper Wildcat Trust staff showing children how to perform CPR. Fire Scotland will be bringing their virtual reality headsets, which proved exceptionally popular with adults last year. As well as having interactive demonstrations, there will also be some activities for children to partake. Local businesses will be providing face painting and body art, sand art with an emergency services theme and the Inkwell Community Kitchen will be providing cupcakes to decorate in a blue light theme. Alongside all these fantastic activities, a range of informational stands by our participating services will be located in and around the venue.

The students decided to run the Moray Blue Light Festival again, hopefully making it bigger and better in 2020.
