Established in 2003, North East Open Studios has evolved to become a major cultural event, attracting up to 300 individual and group members each year. Come and explore our open studios, make the most of this unique opportunity to visit artists in their creative spaces, chat about their work and find out about their artistic processes.

You will find Open Studios in almost every type of location from custom built studios to private homes, garden sheds, cafes, galleries and more besides, some on high streets and industrial estates and others with staggering views of coast and countryside. Not all our members have accessible studios and will set up in other spaces or get together at group venues. The art and craft is just as varied and interesting, created by artists with a wide variety of experience and inspiration. Part of the fun of North East Open Studios is uncovering artwork you’ll fall in love with in unexpected places. What all will have in common is the wonderful welcome. Our yellow signs are a familiar sight across the North East every September, guiding visitors to our artists’ doors. The North East Open Studios book, App and website shows the opening dates and times for each venue during North East Open Studios and are a great resource to find local artists and makers all year round.

4. Brodie Castle Pond Walk & Photo Trail Enjoy a beautiful walk around the pond and see the ducks. View the wildlife hides and wooden carvings along the way. There are a number of photo points along the way, part of the Brodie Castle Photo Trail. These posts have a groove cut in the top where you can rest your camera or pop your phone in to get the perfect snap. Pick up a map from the Welcome Centre or use a QR code to access it on your phone.

5. The Pictish Trail Venture beyond the castle walls with the unique Pictish Trail, which showcases carvings inspired by Scotland’s early Pictish inhabitants. Created by the Brodie Castle Grounds Team, these artworks line the trail and guide you to the Rodney Stone, an original Pictish carved stone standing proudly on the estate. Trail maps are available from the Welcome Centre.

8. Adventure Playpark Perfect for blowing off steam, the playpark is located beside the Castle Café. The Adventure Playpark is filled with exciting equipment for children to enjoy.

Orienteering Trails Brodie Castle offers two free orienteering trails, developed with the Moravian Orienteering Club: • A beginner-friendly loop around the castle suitable for all ages and abilities. • An advanced trail exploring the wider estate and pond area, perfect for experienced adventurers. No compass skills are required, but for added fun, download a free compass app. Digital and printed maps are available from the Welcome Centre.

seaside town for a fifth time with over

300 vehicles booked in, some from overseas. Wheels of Nairn will take place on Saturday, September 20 and the organisers are gearing up to make the fifth instalment even bigger than before. The event is supported by title sponsor Nairn Car Sales and Nairn BID, the organisers of the event have been delighted to find that this year, they have been approached by other businesses wanting to get involved. Lucy Harding, manager of Nairn BID said: “Now in its fifth year, Wheels of Nairn has definitely found its feet and is a firm feature not only on the Nairn events’ calendar, but it seems to be well respected amongst vehicle enthusiasts too. Every year we get several emails from people asking when they can enter and there’s always a flurry when we open the registration.

She added: “We are absolutely delighted to have Nairn Car Sales supporting us again, but what has been brilliant, has been the approaches from other companies wanting to get more involved. For example, we now have RM Towbars coming on board as our ‘Best in Show’ prize sponsor. They have been a category sponsor in the past but wanted to get more involved this year. T Distance: 5 miles Time: 2-3 hrs Level: Easy, with some elevation Terrain: A mixture of road, grass track, and well-maintained paths Access: As you travel along the B9031 from Macduff, you’ll see a signpost for St John’s Church (AB45 3ES) on the left. Shortly after, you’ll find an old quarry on the right, which is the best place to park. The What3words location for the quarry is: ///townhouse.inhabited.note Please note, there is no direct public transport to the start of this walk. However, you could take the No. 273 bus to Gardenstown and walk to the church from there, although the path may be overgrown in places. 14

his is a beautiful circular coastal walk with stunning views and a fascinating slice of local history. At its heart lies the atmospheric ruin of St John’s Church, better known as the Kirk of Skulls, perched dramatically above Gamrie Bay. Start at the old quarry parking area and carefully cross the road to join the small road signposted for St John’s Church. Follow this road as it winds along past the church’s own small carpark. Although you can park here, the rough condition of the access road makes the quarry a better option. Continue along the track beyond the carpark until you reach the ruined church and graveyard. This is St John’s Church, a historic 11th-century site dedicated to St John the Evangelist. Most of the ruins visible today date from the early 1500s, with later additions in the 17th century.

The nickname “Kirk of Skulls” comes from a dramatic local legend linked to a battle in 1004 AD, the Battle of the Bloody Pits. According to tradition, a Viking fleet sought shelter along the Banff coast during a fierce storm. Short on supplies, around 600 Vikings landed near present-day Gardenstown, hoping to raid the area. Unbeknown to them, the Thane of Buchan had anticipated an attack and assembled a strong local force. A brutal battle followed, ending in the Vikings’ defeat. The heads of three Viking leaders were said to have been displayed within the church until the 19th century, a gruesome detail that inspired the church’s eerie nickname. After exploring the ruins, continue a short way beyond to a bench with a panoramic view of Gardenstown, locally known as Gamrie. Retrace your steps slightly to the map board, then head up the well-maintained footpath. There is a steady climb here as you make your way inland.

At a junction, take the left-hand path. After passing a farm, continue on the right-hand path, which leads past a row of wind turbines. Once you reach the coastline, pause to soak in the spectacular views across the Moray Firth. Turn right here to follow the coast back toward Gardenstown, with views of Crovie appearing along this stretch. Eventually, the path swings back inland. Before you reach the previous junction, take the left turn which leads you back down toward the church. From there, simply follow the road back to the quarry, where your walk ends. This circular route offers a rich mix of history, coastal beauty, and peaceful rural scenery. It’s an ideal walk for a sunny morning or afternoon, just be sure to bring sturdy footwear and a camera for those views.

here is no doubt that shopping has changed over the last few decades. With the arrival of the internet we no longer shop like our parents did and now everything can be purchased with the click of a mouse. The pandemic simply accelerated this process and it was disheartening to see the demise of old favourites – Woolworths, Debenhams, John Lewis – all big names that vanished one by one, decimating the high street.

But all is not lost. Slowly but surely confidence is returning to shopping centres as people realise that, as social animals, we need contact with others. Hats off to Eastgate, whose management have turned a retail shopping centre into a place to meet and spend time with others – in other words, they have a social conscience. Who hasn’t been in a queue for the parking area, waiting for tickets to be issued and barriers to go up, thus permitting access? This used to be the model at Eastgate but they now have smarter parking, a brand new, ticketless ANPR system that offers a more streamlined payment experience, thus making a visit to the centre as effortless as possible. 19

his year we are excited as ever to welcome the community and visitors to Huntly Hairst week of events from 31st August to 7th September with the main event on Saturday 6th September from 8-30am to 4pm. Our annual celebration of rural life gives us the opportunity to showcase our beautiful town and the wonderful produce that is made in Aberdeenshire. The Hairst is a unique annual harvest festival taking place in Huntly. This family event established in 2002, celebrates the food and traditions of Aberdeenshire. It has something for everyone, from an extended farmers market and craft fair to cookery demonstrations and competitions.. The events start off on Sunday 31st with pre-Hairst family fun at Leith Hall and on Monday 1st September come along to Square Deal at 22 The Square, for a special version of Food Chain monthly community cook-along

and learn someone else’s recipe. Everyone is welcome and is suitable for families. The main event on Saturday 6th September has had a wonderful response, and we are able offer over sixty food stalls filling the main square and Number 30 with produce from all round Aberdeenshire, and further afield. We have bread, cheeses, meats, locally made cider, craft beers, street food and much more. New Family Festival

To Launch This Autumn A new family focused event is arriving in the north east this autumn. Skotoberfest promises a celebration of food, family and festival fun at its inaugural showcase on Saturday 11 October. Set against the magnificent backdrop of historic Castle Fraser by Sauchen near Inverurie, Skotoberfest will showcase over 100 artisan stalls offering food, drink and craft, as well as a full day programme of music and entertainment.

There will be lots to keep young visitors entertained, including a land train, inflatable fun, trampolines, face painting, sand art, glass painting, and a surprise fun guest in the family section.

Visitors can indulge in everything from gourmet street food to local delicacies, enjoy live demonstrations, and revel in the festival atmosphere. Performances will take place throughout the day across two stages, including a rock choir, Aberdeenshire Saxophone Orchestra, Monza Express, top Deacon Blue tribute band Dignity, Shona McVey as Annie Lennox, DJ sets, and a ceilidh by BROMA ceilidh band to dance the night away. Event organisers promise a family focused event, where attendees can expect value for money and enjoyment of a wide variety of family friendly activities. 26

f you were able to turn back the clock to the latter half of the nineteenth century and to look down on the countryside of the North East, you would see it peppered with railway lines, serving commuters, agriculture, the whisky distilleries and the coastal fishing villages. The Banff, Macduff and Turriff Railway opened in 1857 connecting Turriff with the grandly named Great North of Scotland Railway’s main line from Aberdeen to Keith.

Fast forward to 1923 and the Great North of Scotland Railway was absorbed into the LNER (London and North Eastern Railway). By this time rail travel was being overlooked in favour of bus and lorry transport and gradually the railways declined, the last passenger service being in 1951 and goods trains finishing in 1961, some years before Dr Beeching’s Report.

stock were abandoned; some were demolished, some transformed into private homes and some were used as storage space - for chickens! But there is one building, dating back to 1872, that has been lovingly restored and transformed into a retail operation that is second to none. On travelling eastwards from Banff, the coastal road takes you through Macduff and unless you are looking up (inadvisable if you are the driver) on the hill, overlooking the sea and on a clear day you can see the mountains of Sutherland in the distance. The building is The Platform – the old railway station. Nothing prepares you for what waits inside. From the outside it is a solid oblong of a

building with very little to indicate what the interior holds. But once you have walked through the entrance door you are in another world, one that has been lovingly thought out and presented with flair. Here the modern day rubs shoulders with the past - one delightful feature is the visual history on the walls, reminding you of the shop’s fascinating previous life. A browser’s paradise. Beautiful clothing for children, men and women; cards and gifts for all occasions; accessories and items for the home. Each department flows seamlessly into the next and you cannot possibly take it all in with just one tour of the shop floor. To my shame I confess that I had not visited The Platform in all the years I have lived in the North East (since 1987, since you ask). I had no idea such a wonderful shop was there, waiting to be discovered. My companion gave me no clues – and I am very glad that she didn’t as I did not expect to find what I found.

Very helpful and knowledgeable sales people are on hand to assist when required and, thankfully, there is no pressure (nothing worse than being hounded by an over-zealous shop assistant) – you are free to wander at leisure. And I did – round and round I went, seeing new things with every pass. All that browsing is thirsty work and a well-earned rest is called for. And what better place to take the weight off your feet than in Annie’s Cakery, a cosy tea room at the front of the building with glorious views out over the sea. Oh my, the cakes! All home made on the premises by Annie, and her fantastic team who whip up light lunches, teas and coffees and serve everything with genuine smiles and enthusiasm. I have a neighbour who thinks that walking past a Victoria sponge is disrespectful, so he is included in my day out and will receive a magnificent piece of cake magic as a special treat. I intend to keep the cheese scones for myself; he will not get a look-in there. Would I go again? You bet. There is no better place to find special presents, not only for yourself but for special friends. It’s all there, just waiting to be discovered.

he Laigh O’Moray Vintage Association was started in 1999 by a group of vintage enthusiasts who came up with the idea to hold a gathering with a view to making it a little fundraiser for charity (and also have a little fun with what they love doing!). Over the last 25 years the many committee members who dedicated their time voluntarily have fundraised over sixty thousand pounds for local charities. These range from Abbey’s Stars and the Archie Foundation, to diabetes, epilepsy, cancer and mental health charities and many other worthy and wonderful causes. These charities vitally need the awareness, support and funds to keep providing their services that are relied upon by our local communities between Aberdeen and Inverness. The charity day had been popularly celebrated in Roseisle for many years, becoming a fixture in the calendar for a variety of vintage enthusiasts to round off the season at the end of September each year. Sadly however, it seemed like the event was to fold following their 2022 show due to it no longer being able to take place on the private land they had been so fortunate to use.

But this was not to be… vintage enthusiast, Martin Davidson from Keith had enjoyed all bar one of all the charity days and thought of a potential lifeline to the club. Having approached the committee with his idea to relocate the show to a new site, he was quickly and surprisingly voted on as the new chairman of the club to take it forward. The 25th anniversary event was successfully launched at the Keith Show Park in September 2024, with a mix of new and old committee members and the help of volunteers from the local community. There was no knowing if the show would be supported considering the distance from the previous location and there were certainly different challenges that needed to be overcome. All we knew was we’d had a pretty good interest from the vintage community wanting to be a part of the gathering and show off their pride and joy as well as hopefully have a bit of fun. Being an outside event, your main concern is always going to be the weather, no matter what time of year that will always affect any show and waking up on that sunny Sunday morning was a blessing.

The accomplishment of our 2024 charity day didn’t come without its teething problems, like any event we’ll strive to overcome them in the years going forward. Having assessed the facilities available to us at the Keith Show Park, we’re delighted to be able to expand our charity day to now being celebrated over the whole weekend! That’s right - Two days, providing double the opportunity to raise more money for charity and hopefully double the fun for all our exhibitors and visitors to come.

Salalah: Oman’s Secret for Winter Sun and Summer Mist

estled between the Arabian Sea and the rugged Dhofar Mountains, Salalah is one of the Middle East’s best-kept secrets. While well known to travellers from Germany, Poland, and Italy, this southern Omani city is almost unheard of in Scotland and the wider UK. But for those seeking winter warmth, authentic Arabian charm, and something a little different from the Mediterranean, Salalah is irresistible. A Winter Escape Worth Discovering When Scotland is gripped by grey skies, chilly winds, and icy roads, Salalah offers a climate that’s just about perfect. From November to March, temperatures average 26°C by day, dropping to a pleasant 18°C at night. The air is fresh and dry, ideal for exploring, swimming, or simply soaking up the sun. Salalah is a traditional city with low-rise, whitewashed buildings, palm-fringed roads, and roadside stalls selling coconuts and bananas. It hasn’t been overtaken by glass towers or mega malls; instead, you’ll find a slower pace, a sense of calm, and warm Omani hospitality. Oman is one of the safest countries in the World, and Salalah is arguably, its most laid-back location.

Beautiful Beaches and Beyond Salalah’s beaches stretch for miles, with soft white sand and the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Some resorts are situated right next to the sea, where you can stroll at sunrise or dine on grilled fish under the stars. Unlike more crowded destinations, the coast here feels very peaceful and calm in the winter. There’s plenty to explore nearby. Wadi Darbat offers green valleys that feel more East African than Arabian. A trip into the Rub al Khali (Empty Quarter) reveals the world’s largest expanse of continuous sand dunes. Where Arabia Still Feels Real Salalah offers a chance to experience the Arabian Peninsula as it once was. Some fishermen still cast their nets by hand, and markets sell frankincense gathered from nearby “forests”. Omanis greet visitors with genuine warmth and curiosity. English is widely spoken, the infrastructure is modern, and although Oman is respectful and traditional, it’s also very welcoming. Alcohol is available in licensed hotels, and travellers get a duty-free allowance. This is a destination well suited to families, couples and solo travellers, especially those interested in nature, photography, and cultural heritage. It’s not just a flop-and-drop spot, it’s a place to explore, engage, and unwind. Summer Mist: The Khareef Though winter is the ideal time for sun-seekers, Salalah transforms in summer thanks to the Khareef, a seasonal monsoon that rolls in from mid-June to early September. Mist shrouds the mountains, hills turn green, and waterfalls burst to life. The air cools to the low 20s and is refreshing and damp, a rare treat in Arabia.

During this time, Omanis and Gulf residents descend on Salalah to picnic in the rain and hike or drive through foggy hills. It’s not a beach holiday, but for those who love cooler weather and dramatic landscapes, it’s truly magical. Easier Than Ever to Reach I’ve just returned from Salalah, where I found kindness, respect, and a refreshingly upbeat atmosphere. And now, with Oman Air joining the Oneworld Alliance (as of 30 June), it’s easier than ever to get to Oman from the north of Scotland, with codeshare flights and luggage checked right through, courtesy of regional flights with British Airways. For those with a bit more time, you can combine Salalah with Muscat, Oman’s beautiful capital? What a privilege, to live in the North of Scotland, treated almost daily to fine food, kind folk, and picturesque villages and coastlines. It’s often too easy to get acclimatised to the wonders on our doorstep, but I’m instantly reminded of this when family come to stay and remark on their experiences exclusive to this part of the world.

owe a humble thank you for your kind words and expressed enjoyment of my first article. I’ve had some lovely feedback and of course, my extended family were delighted to receive a copy in the post. Although a little surreal to see the article in physical print (a proud moment for me in my chef journalism journey), it also shows evidence of success: when you set a goal and work towards it with effort and consistency. Not all good things come immediately but they are usually worth the wait.

LIFESTYLE Our courtyard kitchen garden has been fun to create with the children this year, it’s the first time I’ve made a conscious effort to grow edibles for our family. So far, the harvest has been abundant, and we’ve even made the effort to consider the wee beasties that help pollinate our fruit and vegetables too. The children have also learned about seasonality and the healthy balance in our garden and further afield. 46

The sheer delight in watching strawberry plants produce their delicate little petals and then transform into bright red juicy fruits have been a highlight; I’ve decided that the punchy fragrance and flavours you get after eating something, picked only minutes before, is one of life’s memories to experience and cherish. Not only are we learning to feed ourselves, but also grasping the concept of patience, consistency, time-planning, responsibility and perseverance, amongst many other skills. My son’s nursery has been growing food this year, and I smiled at the wee ones coming out at home time, happily munching on freshly plucked pea pods. This got me thinking, if our children are involved in, or at least aware of, the process of growing their own food from germination to harvest, are they more likely to eat it or at least try it? Food that is freshly harvested by our local farmers and indeed us gardeners, will be so fresh, flavourful and nourishing, it almost guarantees a different eating experience to get excited about.

ADVENTURES Have you ever had the luxury of returning to nature and completely immersing yourself in the big outdoors, resetting your body and mind? I did just that with my new pal Yaz Basan recently when I booked onto her Wilderness Wellbeing Retreat in the Cairngorms National Park. Letting go of life’s responsibilities and looking after me (even for just 3 days) was a welcome breath of fresh air and re-balance that I so badly needed. I wish for everyone to feel the way I did after my time away; think campfires, mindfulness, cold water immersion, cookery, foraging and jewellery making workshops (to name but a few!), and complete chill out time with some truly wonderful people from all walks of life. Sometimes it seems that in simplicity, you find the most potential for happiness.

This recipe uses a heavy cast iron grill pan; this is one of my favourite bits of kit in the kitchen. You get that slightly smoky flavour of the grill and those beautiful, charred bar lines. It’s a great piece to invest in, but if you don’t have one, perhaps you could borrow one from a friend? Failing that, just use a large frying pan.

1 Large handful of parsley leaves(roughly chopped) ½ tsp Sumac (you can substitute for zest of 1 lemon)

Sea salt & pepper (to taste)

Extra virgin olive oil (preferably cold-pressed) MAKE: 1. Prepare and assemble your ingredients and heat your griddle pan/frying pan to hot. 2. Put your aubergine slices into a bowl and drizzle with 2-4 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil. Rub the oil into the aubergine until it is lightly coated all over and lay the slices onto the hot grill pan. It should sizzle when you put them on. Leave the aubergine to cook for 2 minutes and then flip over to cook for another two minutes. Remove and place back into the oily bowl. 3. Lay the sliced halloumi onto the grill and cook for 1 minute each side before putting it into the same bowl as the aubergine. Heat a frying pan to medium hot. 4. Toast your walnuts in the hot, dry frying pan for a minute or two, before adding a drizzle of oil and the crushed garlic, fry this mix for a few seconds to release the aroma and then tip back in the halloumi and aubergine to reheat, shaking the pan to mix things up. 5. Season with salt and pepper then add some sumac. Follow this with a nice big tablespoon of honey – be generous! The pan should be hot enough to make the honey sizzle and bubble gently, but not too vigorously that it burns. 6. Add the orange segments and squeeze in the remaining juice from the orange, stirring gently to make your sauce coat the mixture. ASSEMBLE: Remove from the heat and fold through the parsley and adjust the seasoning once more if necessary. Serve on a sharing platter with the sticky juices from the pan spooned over the top. I love this dish served with houmous, cous cous and a seasonal salad. 48

IS THE TIDY COO H aving recently lost weight myself, my wardrobe was due a good declutter and so this issue’s article is on clothing. Yesterday, I gathered all my clothes together, sorted them into categories (tops, trousers etc) and went through them.

To get started, find one or two of your favourite items of clothing, pick them up and think about when you last wore them. How do you feel when you hold them? These favourites can be anything from a ball dress to a pair tracksuit bottoms, as long as they make you smile and your heart lift. Hang these favourite items up where you can see them and use them as a reference point during the process. Obviously, my wardrobe is sorted and organised already, so I was able to get all of my clothes out at once and it didn’t take long, but if you are starting from scratch, it is worth taking out just one category at a time so that you don’t get overwhelmed. The first thing you must ask for each item is if you really love it and love wearing it. If you do, that’s a winner, so put it in the keep pile. Go for the easy wins first; look for the things that you love, or things that you need in your life. In this very first flurry of activity, don’t get caught up on one particular item; if you can’t make a decision in about 10 seconds, put it to one side and choose another, then come back to it at the end. 52

You can have a wardrobe filled to the brim with clothes that you don’t love and you’ll find that you are only wearing a very small percentage of them. A lot of people say to me, “If I got rid of everything that I don’t like, I won’t have anything to wear!” If you don’t love it, you’re probably not wearing it.

Once you’ve picked off the easy wins, it’s time to delve a little deeper into those that you’re not sure about. As you pick up each individual item ask yourself if it fits, if you feel good in it and when would you wear it. If it was in a shop, would you buy it again? If it were damaged, would you replace it? How many of this type of item do you have and how many do you need? Does this fit into the space you have, and would you prioritise it over something else to fit it in? If, after all these questions, you are still uncertain then, then keep it and do so with confidence. Put it in your wardrobe in an easily accessible place and see if you wear it. Then revisit it in six months time and make the decision then. Whilst you can try on the clothes you own, if you’re having to try on every item, it’s clear that you’ve not been regularly wearing them and you should ask yourself why. If you have clothes that are the wrong size, check them anyway, because I have found that people tend to put clothes that don’t fit into boxes without checking whether they are something they actually love. Unless you are pregnant or had a baby in the last year, I would suggest letting go of clothes that are more than a dress size away. These non-fitting clothes have been top of my mind this time. As I mentioned, I have recently lost weight and, for one reason or another, I have ended up being slimmer than I imagined. I do not expect to stay at this weight for any length of time as it’s mostly been a side effect and, to be honest, I look rather ill. However, when I went through my clothes, I decided to not keep anything that did not fit at my current size 8. I have discovered Vinted and as I have gone down the sizes, I have found it easy to buy good quality clothes from there that do not cost the

earth (both financially and environmentally). The exception to this rule were a few favourites that I know will be very difficult to replace. My favourite red dress (that seems to fit if I’m a size 8 or 18!), a beaded ball gown in a size 12, a hacking jacket that brings me enormous joy as I bought it almost 30 years ago when I was competing my old horse – you get the picture. I realise that letting go of clothes that are too big can be easier than letting go of clothes that are too small. Somehow there can be more of a barrier there and I do understand that too as I have gone up as well as down. I did a wardrobe declutter with one of my lovely clients who had a wardrobe that was full to bursting – in fact, it had burst. There were clothes filling up almost her entire bedroom and she had no idea what was in there. As we went through the process, it became obvious that she had been holding on to clothes that were too small. She didn’t like the fact that she had, for one reason or another, gained weight, and so she was holding on to all the clothes that she had previously fit in to.

After a chat focused on her vision, she decided that she was going to release everything that was over 2 dress sizes away and check the rest. She was amazing – everything that was in the smaller sizes went and even a fair amount from the sizes that she was close to. She realised that even if she got back down to those sizes, there were things in there that she didn’t want to wear. In the end, she released 20 black bin bags of clothes. Some went to the rag bag, some went to charity, some she sold as bundles and some got sold individually. By the time she had finished, she had a great wardrobe with clothes that she loved, that she could see, and the mental load of having clothes piled all around her room was lifted. Remember that there are no right or wrong numbers to this, only the right number for you. We all have things that we have more or less of than the average person. With the number of animals I have in residence, I’m not really in a position to tell you that you have too many pairs of shoes…

What Story Are You Telling Yourself About Public Speaking?

hen it comes to public speaking, most of us are running on autopilot; we’re shaped by an old story we’re telling ourselves. Maybe it’s: “I’m just not a natural speaker.” Or: “People will think I’m not good enough.” Or even: “If I get it wrong, I’ll never recover.” Do not mistake these stories for facts; they’re protective scripts your nervous system wrote a long time ago, often during your school years, your early career, or even from watching other people you respect stumble under pressure. But here’s the catch: those stories are holding you back. First, they keep you stuck in silence. You hold back in meetings, you don’t volunteer to present, you play it safe (and safe rarely gets noticed as anything other than a wallflower). Second, they dilute your presence. Even when you do speak up, you find yourself overthinking, second-guessing, or sharing only what feels safe. That energy weakens your impact. Now imagine what transforms when you rewrite your old story.

1.You show up powerfully and consistently. People start to see you as a leader, not just another team member. 2.You speak from your values, not from fear. You don’t just present well; you connect and build trust. 3.You stop performing and start owning the room. You’re still you, just more clear, confident, and memorable. You don’t need to ‘fake it till you make it’, you need to find your voice, clear the old noise, and speak the truth of who you really are. That version of you? She’s already inside you. She’s just waiting for you to let her new story unfold. How do I know? Because I used to bite my lip, swallow my words and hope for the best, but when I took a kind look at my life, I realised that it was less than half of what I wanted because I had myself on a tight leash. There will never be a magical day when everything you think or say is received with radical acceptance. You cannot please everyone, but if you’re consistently shrinking to stay safe – expect to disappear.

Could you become a Fostering Family? Opening up your home to a child you don’t know sounds like a big ask. A very, very big ask. What will they be like? Will they be ‘rough’, violent, steal things from me, trash my house? More questions than you can think of run through your mind. It’s quite overwhelming and may have put you off becoming a fostering family. How about turning those thoughts around though? There’s a child in your own community who doesn’t have a safe place to live. Doesn’t have a safe place to come home to, a place where they feel they are welcome and where they belong, where there’s food in the fridge and a warm bed to sleep in. This child hasn’t caused the situation. I’ve yet to come across a kid who has. It’s the adults who have broken down, often through difficult circumstances, or failed in some way, or taken their eyes off the ball for whatever reason. The children are the victims, carrying the fallout, and helplessly suffering huge collateral damage from our fractured society. Is that fair? How many questions do they have? And more importantly, who’s going to answer them? I was surprised to learn how many children are in this leaky boat. Children who don’t know from one week to the next where they will be living, where their next meal is coming from, which school they might be sent to, whether they’ll see their friends or siblings. That’s no way for a child to suffer. They don’t deserve such insecurity and uncertainty. No child does. 56

As human beings we are built to be sociable, to forge strong links with others. For support, guidance and mentorship, sometimes for love and friendship. We need to ‘attach’. To belong, to feel ‘owned’ and part of a supportive community. None of us thrive when we’re marginalised or pushed away. So as adults, shouldn’t we welcome our children back into our community again? Shouldn’t we offer them a safe, warm, caring home, where they can attach, belong and feel welcome? As fostering families, we’re not replacements for birth parents, although we do ‘parent’ them in practical terms. We are calm, curious, consistent guides through their rough seas. We hold their heads above the water when they need it, and let them swim ahead strongly when they’re able, while being the lighthouse to guide them. Most of all though, we are home, we are safety, we are where they know they are wanted and loved. Could you be a safe harbour for a child? Could you be the smiling face to welcome them from school? The person they look for in the sea of parents’ faces at sports day? The adult waving proudly at school concerts? Could you be the person they attach to? The person they look to for guidance, for instruction, for boundaries and affection. You don’t need to be perfect. Who is? But if you feel that our children belong in our community and deserve to grow up here among all that is familiar to them, then please consider fostering. There will be rough seas from time to time, but the rewards are immense, both for you and your family, but most of all, for the child whose life you are about to transform, more than you’ll ever know.

n the last issue I wrote about the importance of changing your thoughts about ageing, when they are the kinds of thoughts that really aren’t helpful to anyone, let alone yourself. It might well be the case that your body doesn’t work as well as it used to; that your mind doesn’t always feel as sparkly as it once did; or that you feel tired sooner than when you were younger. But you can still choose to focus on what you have got, rather than what you haven’t. For instance, instead of complaining that you can’t walk as far as you wish, you can focus on the fact you can walk at all!

There are many inspirational people who can guide us in this way of thinking and behaving, and one of them is Mary Berry, who was 90 in March. She is known for her warm demeanour and her ability to find the good in situations, even when working under pressure. 62

This is choosing your thoughts. When you choose the types of thought you think, you are far more in control of how you experience your life.

There are more and more studies showing how a positive attitude can help the process of ageing in all sorts of ways. In May this year, The Independent reported on how a better mindset can help older people recover from injuries faster. https://www.independent.co.uk/ news/health/pensioners-injuries-fall-recovery-advice-b2755892.html In short, when you think more positively, find the good in any situation, and look through rose-tinted glasses at life, you just feel good. Much nicer than when you are complaining, wishing things were different, and harking back to the old days when everything was better. I’m sure you know this for yourself.

Get outside and focus on nature. A change of scene, particularly if you can move your body while doing so, can easily change your thoughts. How often have you been for a walk and come back feeling better for it? Gardening is also very good for this.

Write down what you’re thinking (pen and paper is best, but notes on your phone is okay too). Look at it objectively. For each negative thought, find an opposite one that makes you feel better.

Do the 5 Minute Flip. Go all in on thinking horrible thoughts and feeling awful for just 5 minutes. Set a timer and when it goes off, stop, move to another location (even another part of the same room) and deliberately focus for 5 minutes on what is working well in your life, what you are grateful for. This idea takes a bit of courage but it really works!

Choose a better feeling thought. That is, one that simply makes you feel better. Here’s an example from a client: S. identified these negative thoughts: “I hate getting old, I feel so restricted and helpless”. She changed them to these more positive ones, and after a few seconds, began to feel better. “I’ve got lots of good memories; I have good people looking after me; I’m grateful my eyes still work well”. But how do you actually change the way you think? You make a decision to do so, and commit to doing it as much as you can. Then you notice what you are thinking. That’s because nothing can be changed if you don’t notice the thoughts in the first place. Then you have a choice – to change them or not. If you want to change them, you deliberately choose to do that, and here’s some ways that will help you:

Remember, gratitude is not about ignoring challenges or difficulties, but about actively looking for and finding the joy and appreciation in the midst of them. These qualities are always there, even if sometimes heavily disguised!
