As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, our homes naturally become places of comfort, warmth, and restoration. in memory of... A great day was had by all at The Albert Lawn Tennis Club on Sunday 9th August in memory of a long-standing and greatly valued member of the club, Myk Kaszuba, who sadly passed away suddenly earlier this year. As well as being a good footballer, Myk was a longstanding member of the Albert Lawn Tennis Club and regularly represented the teams for ALTC. Myk was one of those people who brought everyone together without even trying and seeing so many people come together to celebrate his life on Sunday was a truly special and fitting tribute to a very special friend. Meticulous planning, enthusiastic participation, and generous contributions made for a thoroughly enjoyable and successful day. Not only was Myk’s memory honoured by all his friends from The Albert but £3750 was raised in support of The British Heart Foundation through donations for food supplied by Myk’s son, Alex (Clean Cuisine), raffle prizes, homemade cakes, specially brewed ‘ Ksazuba Malbec’, and contributions from everyone who participated in the Kaszuba Cup. As the day came to a close, Mike’s wife, Susan, made a heartfelt speech, thanking everyone for honouring Myk’s memory and for raising money for The British Heart Foundation. Finally, the Club’s chairman, John Nabbs, gave his thanks, on behalf of the members, to the organisers, helpers, and participants who made the day a memorable one… it was certainly a day to honour and remember Myk Kaszuba who is greatly missed by all his friends at The Albert Lawn Tennis Club. He would have loved it!

beef pork and smoked ham ragu parpadelle INGREDIENTS: RAGU 500g pork shoulder, cut into 2cm cubes 500g braising beef (such as chuck or brisket), cut into 2cm cubes 250g smoked ham joint, cut into small cubes 2 tbsp olive oil 2 onions, finely diced 2 carrots, finely diced 2 celery sticks, peeled and finely diced 6 garlic cloves, crushed 2 tbsp tomato purée 250ml full-bodied red wine 2 x 400g tins chopped tomatoes 500ml good quality beef stock 2 bay leaves 2 tsp fresh oregano 1 tsp fresh thyme 1 tsp fennel seeds, lightly crushed (optional but recommended) 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1 tbsp dried wild mushroom powder (optional) Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper PARPADELLE 600g Italian ‘00’ flour, plus extra for dusting 6 large free-range eggs 1 tbsp olive oil (optional)1 tsp EQUIPMENT: Casserole dish Mixing bowls Fine grater Roasting tray Large serving platter Chopping board and chefs knife

METHOD: RAGU Season the pork and beef generously. Heat half the olive oil in a large casserole over a high heat and brown the meat in batches until deeply caramelised. Remove and set aside. Add the remaining oil and cook the smoked ham for 4–5 minutes until it starts to colour then add the onion, carrot and celery, reducing the heat to medium. Cook gently for 10–12 minutes until softened. Stir in the garlic and cook for another minute. Add the tomato purée for 2 minutes before pouring in the red wine and reduce by half. Return the pork and beef to the pan, then add the chopped tomatoes, beef stock, bay leaves, oregano, thyme, fennel seeds and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a gentle simmer for 3 to 3½ hours, stirring occasionally, until the meat is meltingly tender. Using two forks, gently pull some of the larger pieces of pork and beef apart while leaving plenty of chunky pieces for texture. PARPADELLE Tip the flour onto a clean work surface and make a large well in the centre. Crack the eggs into the middle and add the olive oil. Using a fork, gradually draw the flour into the eggs until a dough begins to form. Knead for 10 minutes until smooth. Wrap in cling film and rest for at least 30 minutes. Divide the dough into four pieces and roll through a pasta machine, reducing the thickness one setting at a time until about 1.5mm thick. Roll up the pasta with a dusting of four and slice into thick ribbons. Cook the pappardelle in a large pan of well-salted boiling water for 2–3 minutes. Reserve a little pasta water before draining. Stir the butter and Parmesan into the ragù. Toss the pasta through the sauce and serve with grated Parmesan, parsley and plenty of cracked black pepper.

slated caramel honeycomb cheesecake INGREDIENTS: FOR THE BASE 300g digestive biscuits 100g unsalted butter, melted 1 tbsp soft light brown sugar Pinch of sea salt FOR THE FILLING 600g full-fat cream cheese, room temperature 300ml double cream 100g icing sugar 1 tsp vanilla bean paste 150g salted caramel sauce, plus extra for serving 150g Crunchie or homemade honeycomb, roughly chopped TO DECORATE 100ml salted caramel sauce 100g honeycomb pieces Sea salt flakes EQUIPMENT: 23cm spingform tin Magimix with blade Mixing bowl and spatula OR Kitchen aid food mixer with K beater

MAKE THE BASE Crush the digestive biscuits into fine crumbs. Mix with the melted butter, brown sugar and sea salt. Press firmly into the base of a 23cm springform tin. Chill for 30 minutes. PREPARE THE FILLING Beat the cream cheese until smooth. Add the icing sugar and vanilla. Fold in the salted caramel. In a separate bowl, whip the double cream to soft peaks before folding into the cheesecake mixture. Finally, gently fold through the chopped honeycomb. ASSEMBLE Spoon the filling onto the chilled biscuit base. Level the surface with a palette knife. Cover and chill for at least 6 hours, preferably overnight. FINISH Carefully remove from the tin. Drizzle generously with salted caramel. Scatter over plenty of honeycomb pieces. Finish with a light sprinkle of sea salt flakes. Serve immediately.

summer diary Summer has been in full swing for Nick and Royston, with a calendar filled with celebrations, special occasions and memorable escapes. From milestone birthdays and Royal Ascot to charity fundraising and a luxurious Devon retreat, it has certainly been a season to remember.

JUNE’S 70TH CELEBRATION Friendship is something Nick and Royston treasure, so when their dear friend June celebrated her 70th birthday, it was the perfect excuse to host a very special weekend. June and Tim Buckley were welcomed with a few glasses of champagne before enjoying an afternoon shopping in Knutsford, followed by lunch at Piccolino. After a relaxing afternoon, it was time to dress for the evening’s celebrations at San Carlo in Alderley Edge, where excellent food, great company and plenty of laughter set the tone for a memorable night. Naturally, the celebrations continued with a visit to a few local bars - because landmark birthdays deserve to be celebrated in style.

hair & beauty A ROYAL OCCASION AT ASCOT Royal Ascot remains one of the highlights of the summer social calendar, and this year was no exception. Invited by friends to join them in the prestigious Royal Enclosure, Nick and Royston donned their morning suits and top hats for one of Britain’s most iconic sporting and social occasions. The day offered everything Ascot is renowned for - world-class racing, elegant fashion and the opportunity to catch up with longstanding friends while making a few new ones along the way. With several winning bets adding to the excitement, it proved to be a truly memorable day.

ASGARD CHARITY BALL Over the months, while Asgard Builders transformed Nick and Royston’s home, a valued friendship also developed. They were delighted to accept an invitation to Asgard’s inaugural Charity Ball at South Staffordshire Golf Club, raising funds for Compton Care - a charity that holds a special place in the hearts of Nick, Royston and many across Wolverhampton. Guests were welcomed with champagne before enjoying an excellent three-course dinner. An exciting charity auction generated enthusiastic bidding, followed by an evening of dancing and celebration. Joined by friends, including Claudia Sharples, guests helped raise an impressive £7,000 for Compton Care. Judging by the success of the evening, this promises to become a much-anticipated annual event.

A LUXURIOUS DEVON ESCAPE Following a busy social season, Nick, Royston and their muchloved companion, Tuppence, headed south for a relaxing stay at the beautiful Lympstone Manor. Overlooking the stunning Exe Estuary, the Michelin-starred country house hotel, complete with its own vineyard, provided the perfect setting to unwind. Set within 28 acres of glorious countryside, the hotel combines exceptional hospitality with award-winning dining, while the new Pool House restaurant offered a wonderfully relaxed setting for long summer lunches. Time spent exploring Devon’s picturesque towns and coastline completed a thoroughly enjoyable break, leaving the trio refreshed and already looking forward to their next visit.

a blissful weekend by the briny in broadstairs By Rebecca Underwood, Travel Journalist DICKENS HOUSE MUSEUM - CREDIT TOURISM AT THANET DISTRICT COUNCIL

A leisurely stroll along the promenade in Broadstairs, with a gentle breeze fluttering over the briny, and the seagulls squawking overhead, is a rather special experience and with its connections with Charles Dickens there is much to explore in this lovely Kentish coastal town.

Visitors to Bleak House are welcome to visit the Smuggler’s museum in the cellar, which presents a collection of intriguing exhibits recovered from an eighteenth century wreck that was exposed by the shifting sands of Viking Bay in the 1970’s. The top attraction in the house is, of course, Dickens’ study, where he wrote David Copperfield, and I was simply mesmerised. The room displays a wide variety of fascinating exhibits and includes what was once a richly upholstered, but now rather threadbare chair, which was bought by a Mr Edward Wilson at the sale of Charles Dickens’ furniture immediately after his death. It was later sold to a Mr Scrimgeour who bequeathed it to his daughter and in 1959 it was acquired for Bleak House.

Fort House, an imposing building perched high on a cliff overlooking the sands of Viking Bay was once the holiday home of Charles Dickens. The property, which he called his ‘airy nest’, dates back to 1801 and following his death in 1870 the property was renamed Bleak House.

For those of us with a penchant for a spot of afternoon tea, visitors are welcome to relax beneath the parasols in the fragrant gardens, weather permitting, or sink into a comfortable seat in the Great Expectations dining room. A veritable feast of delicious, dainty sandwiches, tasty cakes and scrumptious scones with clotted cream and jam are served with aplomb along with piping hot pots of English tea.

Dickens describes his life and work at Fort House in a letter to a friend: “This is a little fishing place, intensely quiet, built on a cliff, where on our house stands, the sea rolling and dashing under the windows. Seven miles out are the Goodwin Sands whence floating lights perpetually wink after dark as if they were carrying on intrigues with the servants. Also there is a big lighthouse called the North Foreland on a hill behind a village, a severe parsonic light which reproves the young and giddy floaters and stares grimly upon the sea. Under the cliff are rare good sands where all the children assemble every morning and throw up impossible fortifications, which the sea throws down again at high water. Old gentlemen and ancient ladies flirt after their own manner in two reading rooms and on a great many scattered seats in the open air. Other older gentlemen look all day through telescopes and never see anything. In a bay window sits, from nine o’ clock to one, a gentleman with rather long hair and no neck cloth, who writes and grins as if he thought he were very funny indeed. His name is Boz*.”

After I had succumbed to the temptations I took a brisk walk along to Victoria Parade, the location of the Dickens House Museum, which offers an enthralling insight into the life and times of the master story-teller. Dickens often visited this property, which was then owned by his friend Mary Pearson Strong and he based the character Betsey Trotwood, the aunt of David Copperfield, on her. It is a truly remarkable experience to gaze upon the varied exhibits, which include a rather grand mahogany sideboard and an exquisite writing box that both belonged to Dickens and there is also a selection of his personal letters, hand written and signed. As I emerged out into the sunshine I walked again along the promenade towards the bandstand where a brass band plays jaunty tunes on a Sunday and local bands perform during the week, and now and again there are Punch and

VICTORIA GARDENS, BROADSTAIRS - CREDIT TOURISM AT THANET DISTRICT COUNCIL

Judy shows entertaining adults and children alike. Next to the bandstand is the very popular ‘Bandstand Kiosk Beyond The Sea’, which entices diners to a selection of wellpresented tables and an extensive array of treats including homemade sandwiches, salads, burgers and hot dogs. Seeking a deep slumber and a hearty breakfast I spotted Shepherd Neame’s Royal Albion Hotel on Albion Road, where Dickens took lodgings in 1839, 1840, 1845, 1849 and 1859 and where he wrote parts of Nicholas Nickleby. This quirky, yet spacious property dates back to 1776 and it is just the ticket for those seeking a high level of comfort and service in an excellent location with panoramic views across Viking Bay.

I opted for a superior sea view room which features a private balcony, contemporary furnishings and an extremely comfortable bed swathed in crisp, white linens.

For a scrumptious evening feast I didn’t need to venture far as the dining rooms on the ground floor present an impressive menu of tempting dishes. I ordered the succulent Whitstable Bay battered haddock and chips accompanied by a chilled glass of Pinot Grigio.

Spectators line the promenade to view the colourful parade of all things Dickensian and I have been reliably informed that there are usually more than a few enthusiastic characters entertaining the audience – and the promenade features a colourful display of beautiful flowers and plants. The Victorian Music Hall is also very popular along with the Victorian country fair, musical entertainment with brass bands, a Victorian bathing party, historical walks, a puppet workshop, exhibitions and a glorious grand gala ball.

Alas, my visit was coming to an end but I intend to return for the Dickens Festival, when the residents of Broadstairs honour Charles Dickens and it will take place from the 13th to the 15th of June. Our first meeting with Kate & Michael was very memorable; a lovely, bubbly couple who looked so in love. From the start they knew what they wanted for their special day and what they wanted to achieve with colours and styling. The couple chose the impressive Pendrell Hall, Codsall (nr Wolverhampton) to showcase their wedding day. The elegant Victorian country house is full of history and character which is clear immediately.

Their brief was cottage garden florals in soft pastel shades. Their favourite florals were peonies, pale blue hydrangea, blue thistle, delphinium and daisies. They loved the relaxed look and didn’t want their day to look too staged. Personal touches on occasional tables throughout Pendrell Hall, created a wedding to be welcomed. We love it when couples add photos to the venue, it’s a cute finishing touch.

The bridal bouquet was a natural handtie, visually very dense with garden florals using a carefully selected combination of large headed flowers and smaller delicate blooms to soften the design. The colours were selected to create a pastel blending, however not to be too muted. This bouquet really paints a floral picture of “Garden Summer Flowers”.

The bridesmaids flowers, as they were already wearing pale blue, opted to carry a posie of white gypsophila. The staircase looked fabulous with a front facing display with colours and florals to complement the wedding. We really enjoyed styling this amazing wedding and the couple really took onboard our suggestions. After the ceremony we returned to re-install the florals and moongate from the room and reset them up in the main ballroom. The moongate was placed behind the head table and the cups in the fireplace were added to the guest tables. The guest tables had a combination of china teapots, cups & saucers and vintage books. Very quirky.

the pension plot twist every family should understand Rethinking the order of wealth

For years, pensions occupied a privileged place in financial planning. They were designed to fund retirement, but for many moderately wealthy households they also became the asset to preserve. Families often spent cash, investments and other capital first, leaving pension wealth untouched for children and grandchildren.

Many moderately affluent couples hold wealth across several different structures. These might include pensions, individual savings accounts, investment portfolios, property, company shares, trusts and cash reserves. Until now, preserving pension wealth could appear an obvious strategy because many pension death benefits were generally capable of passing outside the estate for inheritance tax purposes.

That familiar approach now needs to be reconsidered.

From April 2027, that spending order may no longer produce the intended result.

From 6 April 2027, most unused pension funds and pension death benefits will be included within an individual’s estate for inheritance tax purposes. The change does not mean every pension will automatically face inheritance tax. Inheritance tax is normally charged only on the part of an estate exceeding the available exemptions and allowances. The standard rate is currently 40%, although the amount ultimately payable depends on the composition of the estate, the beneficiaries and the allowances available.

This does not mean that pensions should automatically be spent first. Tax is only one consideration. Accessibility, investment risk, income requirements, family circumstances and the financial security of a surviving spouse may be more important. A strategy that reduces inheritance tax but leaves one partner financially vulnerable cannot really be described as successful planning. The purpose should be to create freedom during life as well as efficiency on death.

It does mean, however, that many established family wealth plans deserve a fresh and properly coordinated review.

Gifting requires confidence, not haste

A pension is still a pension. It may be tempting to view the 2027 change as a reason to withdraw substantial amounts from a pension before the new rules take effect. That could prove expensive. Pensions remain primarily intended to provide income and security throughout retirement. Taking larger withdrawals may create an income tax liability, remove money from a tax advantaged environment and place the withdrawn capital within the wider estate. It may also reduce the financial resources available to meet later life expenditure, care costs or an unexpectedly long retirement.

The pension changes may encourage more families to consider lifetime gifting. Gifts can form an important part of an estate plan, but they should not be undertaken simply because a tax deadline is approaching. A gift is normally irreversible. Once money or assets have been transferred, the person making the gift may lose both access and control.

The better question is not simply, “How do we take money out of the pension?”

Before making substantial gifts, a family should understand how much capital might be needed under a range of future circumstances. This includes normal expenditure, major purchases, inflation, market falls, long term care and the possibility of living considerably longer than expected.

It is, “In what order should we use, retain and eventually transfer the different parts of our wealth?” The answer will be different for every family.

Detailed cash flow planning can help identify what might be genuinely surplus. However, projections are based on assumptions and cannot guarantee future

outcomes. Investment returns, inflation, taxation and personal circumstances can all change.

The most valuable action before April 2027 may not be a financial transaction. It may be a coordinated review involving financial planning, pension, investment, legal and tax professionals.

Liquidity is easily overlooked A family may appear wealthy while holding relatively little accessible cash. Property, land, private companies and valuable collections can create a substantial estate without providing the liquidity needed to meet an inheritance tax liability or divide wealth fairly between beneficiaries.

The objective is not to predict every future change in legislation. It is to create a plan capable of adapting when tax rules, markets and family circumstances inevitably evolve. Wealth planning at its best is not about surrendering control merely to save tax. It is about protecting independence, preserving choice and passing on family wealth with clarity and intention.

The inclusion of pension wealth may increase the taxable value of some estates. Personal representatives will be responsible for reporting and paying any inheritance tax due in relation to affected pension funds and death benefits.
