As the golden leaves start to fall and the air takes on a crisp, familiar chill, many of us feel a natural urge to retreat indoors. the quiet season: how to help hibernating wildlife As autumn deepens and temperatures drop, much of our native wildlife begins a quiet retreat entering the remarkable survival state we call hibernation. Hedgehogs nest under sheds, bats settle in lofts and caves, and frogs bury themselves in pond mud. For many species, this season is one of stillness and resilience.

A hedgehog house placed in a sheltered corner can provide a safe retreat. In early autumn, leave out water and specialist hedgehog food to help them build reserves. Skip the slug pellets and pesticides — these can poison the animals relying on natural food sources before their long rest.

But these natural rhythms are becoming harder to follow. Milder winters and unpredictable weather can confuse the signals animals rely on. Hedgehogs may delay hibernation and get caught by frost. Others wake too soon, before food is available. For smaller species with limited fat reserves, this can be fatal.

Though much of nature seems still in winter, there’s a quiet determination beneath the surface. Hibernation is one of the animal kingdom’s most extraordinary survival tools, and with a little care, we can help ensure our native species emerge strong in spring. Whether it’s leaving a log pile untouched or simply allowing a corner of the garden to stay wild, your outdoor space can become a safe haven. Even small, thoughtful choices make a real difference. Autumn may be a time of slowing down, but it’s also a chance to quietly stand up for the wildlife that depends on us.

Even a small garden or shared green space can offer vital support. Leaf piles, log stacks and compost heaps make excellent shelters for hedgehogs, amphibians, and insects. Avoid disturbing these areas in winter, and always check before digging, strimming, or lighting bonfires as you may be about to uncover a sleeping guest.

Chocolate: Theobromine contained in chocolate is a stimulant that dogs cannot metabolise effectively. Ingesting theobromine can lead to vomiting, diarrhoea, increased heart rate, tremors, and seizures. The darker the chocolate, the more dangerous it is as the more cocoa it contains. Raisins, grapes and sultanas: These are extremely toxic to dogs and found in many foods including cakes and cereal bars. Ingestion can result in acute kidney failure which may be fatal if not treated. Alarmingly the toxic dose varies and some dogs may react severely to just a

Xylitol: Even very small amounts will cause a rapid insulin release leading to dangerously low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) within minutes. Ingesting larger quantities may result in liver failure. Cats are particularly curious and may chew on leaves or more commonly walk through pollen, then groom it off their fur. SQUASH RISOTTO 450g of arboria risotto rice 2 banana shallots 2 peeled celery stick 6 garlic cloves 900ml of hot chicken stock 150ml of white wine 100g of butter 30ml of olive oil 100g of grated parmesan cheese 1 small butternut squash 1 tbsp of olive oil 8 fresh sage leaves Salt and black pepper 30ml of cream if you have some SALSA VERDE Small bunch of flat parsley and mint 1 tbsp of capers 3 salted anchovy fillets 1 garlic clove Zest and juice of one small lemon 1 tsp of dijon mustard 100ml of olive oil 1 tsp of sherry or malt vinegar Cracked black pepper pinch EQUIPMENT Skillet, sauce pan and roasting tray Stirring Spoon, heat proof spatula Meat probe thermometer if you have one Chopping board Jug for stock and wine Cooks knife Measuring spoons / ladle Mixing bowls Scales Measuring jug Food processor Grater Potato peeler

INTRO Tender, full of flavour and perfectly suited to the colder months, this dish brings together the richness of roasted lamb chump with the comforting creaminess of a butternut squash risotto. Finished with grated Parmesan and crisped sage leaves, this is an autumnal main that feels refined but rooted — ideal for dinner parties, wedding food, or an elevated Sunday lunch. You can still have roast potatoes and all the good stuff with it if you love all the trimmings, just make less risotto. METHOD: 1. PREHEAT YOUR OVEN Set your oven to 180°C.Take the lamb out of the fridge and allow to come to room temperature. Pat dry and season well with salt and pepper all over. 2. ROAST THE SQUASH Peel and halve the squash, removing the seeds and stringy bits form the middle. Dice into chunks and toss in oil. Place in a roasting tray and cover with foil. Roast for about 30 minutes or until soft and starting to caramelise. Puree this in a food processor and keep warm. 3. MAKE THE RISOTTO Start number 4 at the same time. Heat a little olive oil and butter in a large pan, then gently cook finely chopped shallot and peeled diced celery until soft. Stir in arborio rice and toast for a minute, then deglaze with white wine. Gradually add hot stock, stirring regularly until the rice is just tender. Stir in your warm butternut squash purée, chopped sage, a knob of butter, and grated Parmesan. Season with salt, pepper, and a squeeze of lemon to brighten. The risotto should be loose and creamy—finish with extra Parmesan and crispy fried sage if desired. 4. SEAL AND ROAST THE LAMB Heat a little oil in a heavy cast iron pan if you have one over medium heat. Place the lamb fat side down first to render off the fat and crispen the skin. Takes about 4 minutes. Once the skin looks brown and crispy, sear each side for a few minutes to brown. Reduce the heat to low and add in bashed garlic cloves, rosemary and butter. As the butter foams, baste the lamb with it for a few minutes. Transfer the lamb to the oven at 180oC for 5 minutes for medium rare or probe to 52oC it will carry on to 56oC when resting or kept warm. Allow to rest with a sheet of foil on top for 6 minutes. 5. PREPARE THE SALSA VERDE Place all of the ingredients into your food processor and pulse to get a rough chunky texture. If you don’t have a processor just chop up the dry ingredients, whisk the oil into the mustard, add the lemon and vinegar then stir in the chopped ingredients. 6. SERVE Once rested, slice the lamb chumps into about 4 thick slices. Spoon the risotto into a wide pasta bowl, lay the lamb slices neatly on top or to the side and spoon over the salsa verde.

pear frangipane with chocolate, hazelnuts and vanilla mascarpone INGREDIENTS: SWEET PASTRY 200g of plain flour 100g of cold unsalted butter, diced 80g of icing sugar 1 egg yolk 1 tbsp of cold water POACHED PEARS 4 ripe pears 500ml of water 200g of caster sugar 2 star anise HAZELNUT FRANGIPANE 100g of soft unsalted butter 100g caster sugar 2 eggs 80g of ground hazelnuts 20g of plain flour 1 tsp of vanilla extract 75g of dark chocolate chips VANILLA MASCARPONE 300g of mascarpone 50g of icing sugar 1 tsp of vanilla extract EQUIPMENT 9 inch loose bottom tart tin Rolling pin Baking parchment Baking beans or dry rice Cooling rack Pastry brush Saucepan Slotted spoon 3 Mixing bowls Whisk or stand mixer Spatula Fine grater Scales Measuring spoons Sieve Fine grater or microplane Knife Chopping board

INTRO Delicately poached pears, rich hazelnut frangipane, and pockets of dark chocolate come together in this elegant autumn tart. Encased in crisp sweet pastry and finished with a glossy glaze, it’s a dessert that balances warmth and refinement — soft, nutty, and indulgent without being heavy. Whether served with a spoonful of crème fraîche or a scoop of vanilla ice cream, it’s the perfect finale to a hearty seasonal menu. METHOD: 1. PREHEAT YOUR OVEN Set your oven to 180°C 2. POACH THE PEARS Peel and halve the pears, removing the core carefully with a small knife or spoon from the middle. Cut into thick slices. Mix the sugar and water together in a small pan add the star anise and bring to the boil, turn down once boiling and add the pears. Cook until soft but still holds its shape. Allow to cool. You can add some fresh ginger to the liquid and continue to reduce to a syrup to gloss the top of the frangipane once out of the oven. 3. MAKE THE PASTRY Rub the cold butter cubes into the flour and sugar until sandy. Mix in the egg yolk and cold water to form the dough. Add a little more water if you feel its a little dry. Wrap and chill for 30 minutes then roll to 3mm thick and line the tart tin. Chill the pastry again. Once out of the fridge, scrunch up parchment paper and push into the pastry evenly. Fill with dry rice and bake for 15 minutes at 180oC. Remove the parchment and dry rice then check for holes, fill any holes with whisked egg yolk. Bake for a further 10 minutes until golden. Allow to cool. 4. MAKE THE FRANGIPANE FILLING Cream the soft butter with the caster sugar until light, then beat in the eggs one at a time. Next, fold in the ground hazelnuts, flour and vanilla. 5. BAKE Spread the frangiapne into the cooled tart case. Dot with the chocolate chips, place the pear pieces all over or slice and arrange in a fan for a more formal presentation. Bake for 30 minutes at 170oC in. Fan oven 6. VANILLA MASCARPONE Sieve the icing sugar and add the vanilla extract into the mascarpone and fold in well with the spatula. 7. SERVE Brush the top of the frangipane with the poaching syrup. Serve hot or cold with a quenelle of mascarpone and a fine grating of hazelnut.

tettenhall running club Tettenhall Running Club hosted its Summer Party on Friday 8th August at Atelier Del Cibo in Tettenhall. A fantastic night was had by all, celebrating the 1 Year anniversary of the club with a theme of “Dress to impress in Club colours of white and Blue”. The occasion was made even more special with Atelier Del Cibo celebrating their 2nd anniversary on the same weekend. Tettenhall Running Club was founded in April 2024 by two friends; Joe Marples and Tom Rowley. The idea was to create a free, friendly, accessible, community based running club that allowed people to meet, socialise and of course enjoy their running, whatever their ability. We meet every Wednesday evening at the Dog and Gun Pub in Tettenhall for a 7PM start. We usually offer two different routes, a 5KM and an 8KM (all route information is posted on our socials and shared within the community whatsapp group to allow people to familiarise themselves with the routes before turning up) Since our inaugural run, where we had a handful of our friends join us, we’ve grown significantly with a weekly average of around 50 runners turning up each week to run with the club. Last week was our biggest Wednesday night turnout to date with over 80 runners joining us. Every week we finish the run with a drink in the Dog and Gun pub, allowing people to connect, make new friends and help build a community. We’re fortunate enough to have a lot of help from friends in terms of managing and organising, all of which is done on a purely voluntary basis. The temperate climate, long stretches of beautiful golden sandy beaches and an extensive selection of golf courses ensure that those statistics will continue to increase. The Quita do Lago, which has hosted the Portuguese Open, features 2000 acres of breathtaking scenery with American standard greens, bunkers and tees is only 28 kilometres from Albufeira, one of the most popular coastal resorts.

The Algarve

Sesmarias, and only 45 kilometres from Faro Airport and a 12 minute walk to Balbina Beach, which is set in a secluded spot and accessible through the meandering trails that cut through the cliffs. The hotel’s check-in procedures are swift and efficient, my luggage was whisked away and I was escorted to the Extreme WOW Penthouse measuring 485sqm and featuring panoramic views, two spacious bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen with a stovetop and oven, a refrigerator, a dish washer and a wide array of kitchenware. Sumptuous furnishings in calming blue hues and soft carpeting ensured that I immediately relaxed. Cocooned on a comfy chair on the terrace, I took in the fabulous view of the setting sun over the briny whilst sipping on a chilled fruit juice and planned my itinerary for the following day before exploring the hotel’s amenities, which include a spa with a sauna and steam room, a wet lounge and a fitness centre, which I must confess, persuaded me to head for bed ‘tout suite’. Following a deep and comfortable slumber, a few leisurely laps in the outdoor pool and a hearty breakfast I ventured outside and hailed a taxi for the short ride to the centre of town.

Albufeira, named Balturn by the Romans and renamed Al Buhera by the Moors, was, Úand remains, a thriving fishing community where citizens prospered as a result of trade with North Africa. In the 12th century the Christian conquest began and in 1249, during the reign of King Alfonso III, when the Moors were ousted, the city became part of the Portuguese Algarve. King Manuel I awarded Albufeira a royal charter in 1504 and from then on it was governed and protected according to Portuguese law.

I wandered around the meandering cobble stoned streets and the central square, shaded by a canopy of towering palm trees, and I continued with a leisurely stroll whilst browsing the colourful street stalls and charming shops, bursting at the seams with leather and suede goods, handmade lace, pottery in dazzling colours, intricately woven baskets, products made of cork and of course gold Filigree jewellery. I was easily persuaded to part with a few Euros and feeling like a breather I joined the locals at one of the bustling cafes.

In the 60’s Albufeira emerged as a tourism destination and today it is a well established popular resort. I was keen to learn more and experience the lively nightlife in the New Town and the more sedate lifestyle, which the Old Town offers. On arrival, I checked in at the luxurious W Hotel, located atop southern Portugal’s cliffs on Estrada da Gale,

I sampled the pastel de nata, a delicious custard tart, lightly dusted with cinnamon and accompanied by a glass of sweet Jeropiga, which is made with brandy and wine. Ready to continue with my explorations, I headed for the soft golden sands of Praia dos Pescadores (Fisherman’s beach), located in front of the Old Town, it’s the ideal spot for an afternoon snooze. Praia do Túnel, which is accessed through a tunnel between the imposing cliffs is another popular beach. I then made my way to Praia dos Olhos d’Agua; a traditional fishing village, where I spotted the multicoloured fishing boats hauling their nets with the ‘catch of the day’. As the salty sea air wafted across my nostrils my appetite increased and I spotted the Pizzeria Frattelli, located within a stone’s throw from the beach, on Edificio Varandas do Mar. It’s a rather trendy restaurant and features an open kitchen with handsome waiters

Zoomarine also features an aquatic fun area with water slides, a wave pool, swimming pools and a large expanse of white sand. For those seeking more action, jumping on a raft and hurtling along the rapid river should suffice. There are a number of restaurants on site and picnic areas are provided for guests preferring self catering. Back at the hotel and after an afternoon siesta I decided to head to Johnny Hooper’s Saxophone Bistro on Rua Almeida Garrett in the New Town. The menu features a wide selection of culinary delights including the house speciality; slow braised pork belly with Madeira and five spice jus, and with a glass or two of Cardeal Reserva, Dao, 2009, the delicious flavours are unforgettable. Diners are encouraged to sing along to the tunes and when the tambourines are passed around there’s no shortage of those keen to show off their talents or lack of. In the words of Herb Alpert ‘Johnny Hooper plays with a lot of soul and great tone’.

buzzing around serving tasty homemade Italian dishes. I dined ‘al fresco’ and ordered the spaghetti gamberi with a generous array of succulent shrimps and clams and accompanied by a glass of chilled white wine it was just the ticket. This is the ideal place to take part in the sport of people watching and the perfect place to view the water babes taking a dip in the ocean and others enjoying para-gliding, water skiing and snorkelling.

The allure of Albufeira, one of Portugal’s treasures, continues and it’s a real crowd puller.

For those of us who are keen to take the opportunity to get up close and personal with marine life, Zoomarine, located at Estrada Nacional 125-Km 65, Guia is not to be missed (a fleet of courtesy buses pick up from most of the larger local hotels). The philosophy of this delightful and entertaining park is conservation and environmental education. There are a number of presentations featuring tropical birds, birds of prey, seals and sea lions and the very popular dolphin shows. For an unforgettable experience I made my way to the Dolphin Emotions booth. Diving into the sparkling turquoise waters of the lagoon and interacting with dolphins for thirty minutes is simply sublime. Under the supervision of a professional trainer I swam alongside two delightful dolphins and I was well and truly smitten.

During a recent visit to London, it gave the guys an ideal opportunity to catch up with Juliet for lunch at Cecconi’s, Mayfair. After exchanging stories from their respective shows and the latest gossip, the afternoon was brimming with laughter and camaraderie.

tropical meets halloween at foxtail barns We love everything about Foxtail Barns and were excited to be part of this amazing wedding. From the moment you arrive you are welcomed by a long spectacular driveway adorned with mature shrubs and beautiful landscaped gardens. You are then treated to a pretty lake and this all sets the style of what to expect. The venue streams masses of natural daylight through the large windows which brought all the colours to life in the designs of this vibrant and colourful wedding. The brief was tropical flowers with interesting foliages, full colour explosion with pumpkins and gourds. We included personal items of a moss agate crystal wand, potion bottles as favours and the bride’s favourite fragrant candles. It all came together perfectly.

elevate the venue The couple’s favourite florals were Gloriosa, Harlequin roses, Orchids, Strelitzia and airplants. Other tropical items were added that complemented their favourite selection within the venue styling to bring it all to life.

“And it really did come to life!” She walked down the aisle with a mass of Gloriosa embedded onto a “Moss Agate” crystal wand. Eyecatching and so unique.

smart styling The aisle was styled with pumpkin arrangements filled with their favourite florals. Little groups of pumpkins and gourds sat pretty at the base with fresh moss (smelt amazing and lush) and mixed autumnal leaves scattered along the aisle. Everything looked so natural, even the civil ceremony table had little pumpkins and foliage displayed. The great decision made by this couple was to use our FULL services allowing us to empty the civil ceremony room and reset all the displays in the main wedding room. They had double usage of the displays and added greater impact for the rest of the day.

So much detail and it reflected the couple’s personalities. If you are overwhelmed by the decisions of what to include when planning your day, don’t worry. We are here to guide you, offer suggestions and more importantly... with our experience, if something just won’t look right, we are honest enough to say.

No detail was spared on the guest tables. We used the stands of our living trees and adapted them with a large tropical explosion of flowers and foliage. Chinese lanterns, fresh moss and twinkles went up the stem of the tree. It looked alive. The tables were draped with our dark green runners and small mini pumpkins and floral clusters. Fragrant candles and potion bottles were at each guest setting and even each place setting was finished with the bride’s favourite flower, a “Gloriosa”. The images really do not give justice to the amount of detail here. The base of the head table was filled with the aisle arrangements from the civil room and then more pumpkins were added. Foliage and moss connected them all together and made it look as though nature had just happened to arrive indoors and grown there. The top of the table was equally as impressive. Long runners dressed with low level vases and florals, candles, lights and mini gourds was all linked together with fresh foliage. So natural, fresh and alive. It truly was the colours of the season.

The new enhanced Polo has improved technology, interior, exterior, and equipment. The latest engines are all part of the improvements. Polo now has a choice of engines from 80ps up to 115ps, the particular derivative I was privileged to test, was the 115ps equipped with the brilliant DSG 7-speed gearbox. Although somewhat diminutive 1-litre 3-cylinder engine when you add in the turbo-charge factor, it really is a pokey little vehicle. It had a top speed of 125mph and a 0-62 in 9.8 seconds and a reasonably low CO2 emissions of 129g/km. Fuel consumption suggested by Volkswagen, was 52mpg on the combined cycle, after 250 plus miles the computer suggested I had achieved 53.4 mpg.

It is not really which engine configuration you choose; the Polo is a pleasant companion. The suspension is on the soft side, which I like, because it means that it absorbs all the lumps and bumps in our awfully maintained roads. Out on the B roads or A roads or twisty roads the vehicle performed quite adequately, the stability was very good, sport suspension is available if you would like it as an option but I don’t believe it is really necessary and sometimes manufacturers tune the suspension for handling and they rattle the fillings within your teeth.
