pennfields bowling and social club may 2026
Situated on Coalway Road in South West Wolverhampton, you can find the Pennfields Bowling and Social Club. Accessible via a single-track road between two houses directly opposite Wynn Road, there are two County class Crown Bowling Greens. All you will see from the road is a fluttering Union flag. Surrounded by a variety of homes, the rest is only visible from above.
Originally formed in 1912, the club was simply a large open space owned by a local family. The family constructed a crown bowling green and a tennis court for locals to use. This is pretty much how it stayed for 60 years. In 1970, a local business man funded the construction of a wooden clubhouse which is still in use today.
The Pennfields Bowling and Social Club has changed a little bit over the years; the tennis court has gone and there are now 2 County class bowling greens. The clubhouse is still there and there are various outbuildings in place providing kitchen facilities and shelter when required. The clubhouse itself is a large wooden building with lovely old-style seating and a well-stocked bar selling a range of drinks including local draft ales. The club was the CAMRA club of the year runner up in 2024. Our licensee, Karen Hall, has been running the bar for many years, and knows how to look after cask and keg ales and all our other drinks properly.
We have 2 County class snooker tables that are often used for Midland competitions. It is amazing how particular top snooker players are about their tables. Who knew how important the temperature of the playing surface is!!! We also have a dart board, and a range of table top games such as dominoes and cribbage.
Back to the bowling.... there are 3 main types of bowling that use a biased bowling ball, known as a wood. These are Indoor, Flat and Crown (nothing like 10 pin bowling, that is very different). Both Indoor and Flat use a flat playing surface whereas Crown has a hump in the centre of the green. Crown green is very popular in the northern half of the country, less so in the South. Crown bowling greens have grass surfaces and have natural bumps and dips all over them although the green keepers work hard to keep the surface as tidy as possible. The Pennfields
greens are cut, spiked, watered, fertilised, top dressed and manicured caringly throughout the year. During the bowling season, April to September, the greens are mowed at least 3 times every week to give the best possible playing surface.
Pennfields Bowling Club is recognised as one of the foremost Crown Green venues in the Midlands and regularly hosts local and area championship matches including national events. The All-Britain Mens Senior Individual Merits finals in 2007 and 2024 were held here and the 2026 All Britain Ladies Senior Individuals Merits finals will be here on the 11th of July this year. The club currently has 23 bowling teams that play in local leagues and has been quite successful over the years.
Our club also offers a varied entertainment schedule, Open Mic - where we raise monies for charities, Midlands Air Ambulance for the last year, a Jazz Evening and we look to support local bands and artists through monthly Saturday live band nights, which provide excellent entertainment and see the club rocking. Being a family orientated club, with a very well-priced bar, we offer a great evening that won’t break the bank. We also have a monthly quiz night with a cash prize. We encourage members to suggest new events that they would like. Recently we have hosted a modern Board Games evening. The club is a private, members only establishment and currently has around 400 members but is always happy to accept new ones. Most of our members are local to the club but we also have members from Penkridge, Wombourne, Shifnal, Albrighton and other places. We are looking to make some improvements in the near future including solar panels on the roof, a bar refurbishment and an increased range of drinks. small school, big stage
Newbridge pupils shone at the Arena Theatre in a spectacular original production that celebrated confidence, creativity and the power of the performing arts.
One of the real highlights of this term has undoubtedly been our spectacular Upper School production of Treasure and Trouble, performed at the wonderful Arena Theatre by every child in Years 3–6.
What made the production even more special was that the play was written by our very own Drama Teacher, Helen Woodman. To see a piece created within the Newbridge community brought so vividly to life on a professional stage was incredibly inspiring and a true celebration of the creativity and talent that exists within our school.
The performances themselves were exceptional. The confidence, expression, comic timing, singing, movement and stage presence shown by the children were genuinely remarkable. INGREDIENTS: CHICKEN
8 chicken thighs or whole legs skin on
2 tbsp olive oil
Zest of one lemon
2 garlic cloves
1 tsp of smoked paprika
Maldon sea salt and cracked black pepper
HERB POTATO SALAD
1k baby new potatoes
3 tbsp of creme fraiche
2 tbsp of mayo
1 tsp of dijon mustard
Fresh chives
Curly parsley
A few sprigs of basil
1 shallot finely diced
Juice of one lemon
CHARRED COURGETTE
3 courgette
Olive oil
Sea salt Mint
SALSA VERDE
Small bunch of parsley
Small handful of mint leaves
50g Capers
1 Tbsp Dijon mustard
1 Tbsp of olive oil
1 Tbsp of red wine vinegar
EQUIPMENT:
Cast iron griddle
Mixing bowls
Fine grater
Roasting tray
Large serving platter
Chopping board and chefs knife
METHOD: CHICKEN

Marinate the chicken with oil, garlic, paprika, lemon zest, crushed garlic cloves, salt and pepper. Do this the day before if possible. Roast at 190°C for around 35–40 minutes until golden and cooked through.
Allow to cool slightly before serving.
POTATOES
Boil until tender, then allow to steam dry.
Fold through crème fraîche, mayo, Dijon, herbs, shallot and lemon juice while still slightly warm.
COURGETTES
Wash, top and tail and slice lengthways then char hard in a hot pan or griddle until coloured.
Finish with olive oil, sea salt and torn mint.
SALSA VERDE
Finely chop herbs, capers and garlic, then loosen with olive oil and vinegar.
TO SERVE
Liberally place the potatoes, courgette and chicken pieces on a large platter and finish with the salsa verde and any left over herbs.

INGREDIENTS: JELLY
500g hulled strawberries
80g caster sugar
Juice of half lemon
150ml of water
4 gelatine leaves
12 sponge fingers
STRAWBERRY POSSET
600ml of double cream
150g caster sugar
Juice of 2 lemons
150g of strawberry puree
CREAM CHEESE
250g of mascarpone
150ml of double cream
40g of icing sugar
1 tsp of vanilla extract
BERRY TOP
150g of raspberries
150g of strawberries
1 tbsp of caster sugar
1 tbsp of freeze dried strawberries
1 pre made or bought meringue
EQUIPMENT:
6 glass jars
Scales
Measuring jug
Small pans
Mixing bowls
Piping bag
Jugs / Funnel
STRAWBERRY JELLY
Simmer the strawberries with the sugar, lemon juice and the water for 10 minutes. Soak the gelatine in water then squeeze and dissolve in the strawberry liquid. Break up the sponge fingers and place in the bottom of the jars. Pour the jelly mix over the sponge and chill until set.
POSSET
Heat the cream until boiling then reduce heat, add the sugar and simmer for 4 minutes. Remove from the heat and whisk in the lemon juice and strawberry puree. Pour over the set jelly mix and set for 2 hours minimum.
CREAM CHEESE
Whisk the cream cheese, double cream, sugar and vanilla together until pipe-able. Pipe the cream cheese on top of the posset layer
FINISH
Mix a tbsp of caster sugar in with 150g of raspberries and 150g of hulled strawberries and stir a little bashing up to release some juice then spoon on top of the trifles.
TO SERVE
Allow to chill in the fridge for an hour for everything to set well then serve with crushed meringue on top.

The social calendar continued with Ampika’s Hen Weekend in Brighton, where friends gathered for a lively celebration ahead of her wedding.
Nick and Royston joined fellow Housewives cast members for a weekend packed with entertainment and laughter. Festivities began with Nick & Royston in drag on Brighton’s famous promenade before moving on to a series of celebrations that included a zip-wire adventure, vibrant nightlife and plenty of unforgettable moments.
With cameras capturing every detail, viewers can look forward to seeing the celebrations unfold in an upcoming series.
SUPPORTING THE PINK RIBBON CAUSE
Alongside the glamour and social engagements, Nick and Royston remain committed supporters of local charities. One cause particularly close to their hearts is breast cancer awareness and support. Through their work and relationships with clients, they have witnessed first-hand the challenges faced by those affected by the disease, making their involvement in Pink Ribbon fundraising events especially meaningful.
Joining Housewife Seema at A Manchester Pink Ribbon Event at Manchester Hall for Catwalk for a Cause - this is more than just a fashion show, as everything featured in the show is auctioned off, with the funds going directly to the Pink Ribbon Foundation. The show featured both celebrities and models, both male and female, who have recovered from the illness.

48 hours in the charming city of cambridge

Famous for its university and colleges, chapels, cobbled courts, bridges and beautiful gardens, Cambridge attracts millions of visitors from all over the world. For those of us with a thirst for architecture and heritage Cambridge provides the finest examples.
On arrival, I checked into the University Arms, a luxurious hotel, which was established in 1834 and is located on Regent Street. As I entered, I was warmly welcomed and my luggage was swiftly whisked away. I was escorted to a spacious terrace suite with a balcony overlooking Parker’s Piece, a verdant park, which is a popular spot for picnics, cricket and football. The air-conditioned suite with underfloor heating measures 27 sqm, and features contemporary and comfortable seating and a bright, airy bathroom with a free-standing tub. I took advantage of the generous selection of toiletries and climbed into the enormous bed, swathed in cool linens, and I soon succumbed to a deep slumber.
Up with the larks and I headed for the hotel’s in-house restaurant, Parker’s Tavern, which was abuzz with guests. I ordered the first class eggs Florentine and a piping hot espresso, which were served with style.
With a spring in my step I made my way outside and my explorations began in Cambridge University Library, which is a copyright library with a vast collection of more than seven million books and periodicals and over a million maps. One of the current main attractions (ends 22/02/’25) ‘Endless Stories: Manuscripts, knowledge and translation in the 17th century’ is absolutely riveting. A collection of unique items reflect a four hundred year old quest for knowledge through languages including Persian, Arabic, Hebrew and Malay. Divided into two parts, beginning in the Milstein Exhibition Centre and concluding along the North and South Galleries on the first floor, it is not to be missed.
I then made my way to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, known as the ‘round church’, which is right in the centre of the city and it is architecturally stunning. One of only four round churches in England, this Norman masterpiece was built in 1130 and is based on the church of the resurrection consecrated in Jerusalem in 335, over the site where Jesus Christ rose from the dead. It is spectacular.
The Fitz William Museum, on Trumpington Street, is a real treat for those of us seeking true art. Highlights in the permanent collection include masterpieces from the fourteenth century to the present day, pottery and glass, oriental art, manuscripts, sculpture and Egyptian antiquities. There is a vast array of exhibits to feast the eyes upon and limited time meant that I had to be selective as to which rooms to visit but a stroll around the ‘People’ collection includes the fabulous painting ‘The Betrayal of Christ’ by Bartolomeo Fabri of Cento, which is dated 1621. The masterpiece captures the moment after Judas betrayed Christ with a kiss. I was absolutely mesmerised and moved at the same time. Another treasure is the red granite coffin lid of Ramesses III, which weighs seven tons and was transported by the Italian adventurer Giovanni in the nineteenth century.
Pressed for time, I reluctantly tore myself away and once outside my appetite surfaced and I spotted the Little Rose, a gastro-pub opposite the Fitzwilliam Museum. The property dates back five hundred years and has retained many of its original features including exposed beams. I sat opposite the open fire-place and ordered the pan-fried sea bass fillet accompanied by a glass of chilled house white followed by the delicious and diet-busting double chocolate and marmalade steamed pudding with a white chocolate custard. It was absolutely scrumptious!
Following a long-lie in and a rejuvenating shower I embarked on another packed itinerary and began with the highly popular Cambridge River Tour. The embarkation point is at the Quayside by Magdalene Bridge. Floating
sedately by the most magnificent buildings, including the King’s College Chapel, the Bridge of Sighs and the Wren Library at Trinity College, is the most wonderful way to spend an hour or two in the afternoon. I opted for the ‘chauffeur driven punting experience’ and it was splendid. My ‘chauffeur’ was very entertaining, providing his enthralled passengers with his insight on local history and even a few snippets of gossip.
It was still early in the day and I strolled along to Trinity Street for a spot of retail therapy. Heffers Bookshop, the largest in the city, has been trading since 1876 and it’s a treasure trove of reading material, stationery and games galore. Of course I was mesmerised by the travel section and spent quite some time leafing through a enormous array of subjects and parted with a substantial part of my budget.
Weighed down with my purchases I decided to visit the Eagle public house located on Bene’t Street, a short walk away. The property dates back to 1667 and boasts some very famous regulars including Cambridge scientists James Watson and Francis Crick who discovered the structure of DNA in 1953. They announced their discovery in this very place, which has a warm atmosphere and is clearly very popular. I ordered the delicious hand-battered Atlantic cod with triple-cooked chips accompanied by a chilled glass of Chardonnay and it was just the ticket.
Back at the hotel I made my way to the bar and ordered an Irish coffee, my favourite night-time tipple. Reflecting on my time in Cambridge and my admiration for the 121 members of the University of Cambridge who have been recipients of the Nobel Prize since 1904 and I held up my glass in honour of those remarkable people and to this wonderful city.

When we met this beautiful couple, quiet it was very clear from their initial consultation that their styling ideas were eye-catching and were going to create a WOW factor.
The couple chose the luxurious Davenport House, Worfield (near Bridgnorth) to showcase their wedding day. Period features and full of history, this amazing venue sits beautifully in the landscape on the heritage estate.
The brief was whites and pearls. Their favourite florals in their wish list were large-headed open roses, white hydrangeas, phalaenopsis orchids and gypsophila.
Davenport House was decorated for Christmas which added the perfect backdrop. Floating candles and fairy lights made each room so much more magical and added more opulence.
Masses of crisp white florals adorned the hall and the gypsophila clouds created a perfect aisle to welcome the bride and her bridal party.
The bridal bouquet was a cascading handtie which is a combination of a posie and a teardrop bouquet. The cascading detail was created with the most elegant Phalaenopsis orchids nestled in a posie of large-headed white roses and gypsophila. It really was a “Show Stopper”. We really enjoyed styling this amazing wedding.
Our chair sashes finished the chairs with elegance and fresh rose petals edged the chairs with white gypsophila clouds down the aisle.
The civil ceremony room was absolutely breathtaking and the fragrance from all the fresh florals created a sensory overload. The doorway and niches were designed to make a statement and yes, we definitely achieved that goal.
The split arch made of fresh florals framed this exquisite doorway perfectly. A statement piece that really made a difference to the room.
To complement the doorway display, we created oversized displays within the niches on Davenport House’s urns. The perfect combination in design, choices and wedding goals.

However, one of the biggest mistakes I see in the salon is clients waiting until the last minute to prepare their hair for summer. Healthy summer hair isn’t created in a single appointment. It starts with a plan.
If you’re considering going lighter for summer, now is the perfect time to start the conversation with your stylist. One of the biggest causes of damage I see is hair being pushed too light, too quickly. Achieving beautiful blonde tones or brighter dimensions is often best done gradually over a series of appointments, allowing the hair to maintain its strength, condition and shine throughout the process.
Working with your stylist to create a tailored summer hair plan can help you achieve your desired result safely. Whether that’s introducing subtle highlights, brightening existing blonde tones or improving overall hair health before colour services, a structured approach will almost always deliver better long-term results than rushing the process.

they say life is a marathon, but in the end it’s a sprint
It is a phrase I have found myself thinking about more often in recent years, particularly when speaking to people approaching retirement who have spent decades doing all the right things. They have worked hard, built successful businesses or careers, accumulated wealth sensibly and responsibly, and spent much of their adult lives preparing for a future they hoped would eventually reward all the sacrifice and discipline that came before it.
For most people, life begins very much like a marathon. The early decades are dominated by effort, endurance and accumulation. We spend years trying to establish ourselves professionally whilst simultaneously managing mortgages, raising families, building pensions and navigating the endless financial and emotional responsibilities that come with adulthood. There is always another target to reach, another obligation to fulfil and another reason to delay enjoyment until some future point when life finally becomes less demanding.
The problem is that many people become so focused on building a future that they unintentionally postpone living in the present. We tell ourselves that there will be more time later. More time to travel. More time to slow down. More time to pursue interests, strengthen friendships, focus on health or simply enjoy the freedom we imagine retirement will eventually provide.
Retirement itself becomes the destination point for everything.
Yet what fascinates me is how often people underestimate how short that chapter of life may actually end up being.
If someone retires between the ages of 60 and 65, which remains fairly typical for many successful professionals and business owners, they may realistically only have ten or fifteen truly active years in which they possess the combination of health, mobility, energy and financial freedom required to enjoy life fully. Modern medicine may extend lifespan, but longevity and vitality are not always the same thing. The years where we can physically and mentally enjoy complete freedom are often far fewer than we would like to believe.
That is why, in many ways, the ending of life feels less like a marathon and far more like a sprint.
There is an irony in this that is difficult to ignore. We spend forty years preparing financially for a phase of life that may only last a fraction of the time we spent preparing for it. During those working decades we become highly skilled at accumulating wealth, protecting wealth and growing wealth, yet very few people ever learn how to transition successfully into enjoying it.
I have met many individuals over the years who have become exceptionally good at building financial security whilst quietly neglecting the life they intended that security to support. They know how to optimise tax efficiently, structure investments intelligently and create long term financial stability, but somewhere along the journey they have unintentionally convinced themselves that life will begin properly at a later date.
The difficulty with “later” is that it arrives faster than expected.
At first, postponement feels sensible and responsible. There is always a reason why now is not quite the right time. Children are young. The business needs attention. Markets feel uncertain. Work remains demanding. Life becomes an endless cycle of practical justifications for delay.
Then one day something changes. Friends begin retiring. Parents become older and more dependent. Health concerns emerge in people around you. The years suddenly start moving faster and the future no longer feels infinite.
That moment often creates a profound shift in perspective because people begin to realise that the greatest risk in life is not always financial failure. Quite often, it is postponing the very experiences and moments that make life meaningful until the opportunity to enjoy them properly begins to narrow.
What makes this even more interesting is that most people are not secretly dreaming of extravagant lifestyles or impossible ambitions. Despite what many of us think, very few individuals carry around fantasies of private jets, yachts or world cruises.

One of the most important lessons financial planning has taught me over time is that money itself is rarely the true objective. Money is simply a tool. Its real purpose is to create options, freedom and experiences. A good financial plan should never focus solely on how much wealth someone can accumulate. It should also address what kind of life that wealth allows them to live.
That is a very different conversation.
Because there is little value in arriving at retirement financially secure but physically exhausted, emotionally disconnected or full of regret about all the moments that were endlessly postponed in pursuit of one more year of accumulation.
Society celebrates productivity and achievement relentlessly, but it rarely teaches people how to enjoy the freedom they worked so hard to create. Many individuals reach retirement still operating with the same mindset that made them successful in the first place. They continue preserving, delaying and waiting, even when they no longer need to.
Of course, caution and responsibility matter. Financial independence does not come from recklessness. However, there is a point where continually postponing life becomes its own form of danger.
After all, none of us truly know how long the sprint lasts. That thought is not intended to create fear. If anything, it should create clarity. It should encourage us to stop treating meaningful experiences as rewards that must only exist in some distant future. Life is happening whilst we are busy preparing for later.
Perhaps the real goal is not simply reaching retirement with enough money. Perhaps the goal is to arrive there with health, energy, relationships and memories already intact because we chose to live well throughout the journey rather than endlessly deferring joy until the very end.
Work hard by all means. Build wisely. Plan carefully. Create financial security and independence. Those things matter enormously.
But whilst you are building your future, do not forget to build your life at the same time.
Take the trip. Spend the time. Protect your health. Prioritise the people who matter most. Say yes to more experiences whilst you still can.
Because one day you suddenly realise something profound. The marathon went far quicker than expected. And the sprint has already begun.

At first glance, the Mazda CX-30 stylish design commands attention with its sleek and modern exterior design. The signature Mazda grille is prominent, flanked by sharp LED headlights, giving this crossover a bold face, it’s a design that stands out in a crowded marketplace.
Step inside, and the CX-30 continues to impress. The interior is a delightful mix of high-quality materials and an intuitive layout. The dashboard is elegantly designed and is driver friendly, especially the heads-up speed display on the windscreen, everything was easily accessible. Soft-touch materials abound, contributing to a premium feel that rivals some luxury brands, there was ample space for both front and rear passengers, comfort is a key highlight.
The boot capacity was more than sufficient for 4 occupants.
The infotainment system, is a large 8.8-inch display, it was straightforward to navigate, through the rotary dial on the transmission tunnel, I preferred it to the distraction of the touch screen systems favoured by most manufacturers. Smartphone integration through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is seamless, ensuring you stay connected on those longer journeys.
Where the Mazda CX-30 truly shines is in its driving dynamics, the CX-30 proves that you can have fun behind the wheel of a crossover. The handling is impressive, with sharp steering that responds eagerly to inputs. The ride quality strikes a balanced note between comfort and sportiness, managing well over rough roads without feeling floaty.
The lively 2.5-litre petrol engine delivers 140 P.S and allows for a 0-62 in 9.7 seconds, and has an alleged top speed of 121mph. It was a surprise to find the vehicle was equipped with a good old school, manual gear box with 6 speeds. The gear box and clutch action were smooth and positive. Fuel efficiency is commendable, with the manufacturer quoting 47.1 mpg on the combined cycle test, I achieved 52 mpg during my 250 miles on various roads.
Mazda has equipped the CX-30 with an array of safety technologies, including advanced driver-assistance systems. Features such as adaptive cruise control, lanekeeping assist, and automatic emergency braking add peace of mind for both drivers and passengers.

At first glance, the Seat Ibiza 1.0 TSi captures attention with its bold and dynamic lines. There is enough space for passengers in the front and rear seats, making the Ibiza a suitable option for small families.

The test car was equipped with a 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine that produces around 115 bhp, it offers lively performance that makes city driving effortless especially when allied to the lovely automatic gear box, The turbocharger ensures that power is readily available when needed, while also maintaining fuel efficiency, with an average consumption of approximately 48 miles per gallon. Seat claim a top speed of 124 mph could be achievable and a 0-62 could be done in 9.9 seconds.
On the road, the Ibiza had agile handling and a surprisingly composed ride. The steering is responsive, providing good feedback that instils confidence while
navigating twists and turns. The suspension strikes a commendable balance between comfort and sportiness, adeptly absorbing potholes and uneven surfaces without compromising on driving pleasure.

It comes equipped with certain advanced driver-assistance systems that aid in accident prevention and improve overall driving confidence. It is gratifying to note that turning off the annoying lane departure mode is simplicity itself, sadly it defaults back to on when you switch off and back on again.
