piece of computing history sells for £350 at staffordshire auction A fascinating reminder of Britain’s early homecomputing boom went under the hammer at Cuttlestones’ Penkridge sale room recently, when a boxed Newbrain microcomputer sold for £350. Produced in the early 1980s by Cambridgeshire-based Grundy Business Systems Ltd, the Newbrain was once considered cutting-edge. Today, with many pioneering tech companies long vanished from the marketplace, surviving examples have become highly collectable. This particular machine – complete with its original box, instruction manual, power cables and related ephemera – drew strong interest before achieving its £350 hammer price.

It is not just about teaching tricks — it is about helping your pet understand the world around them. Simple routines and calm guidance help your pet feel secure, while regular training sessions can become a valuable way to bond and communicate.

Before choosing a pet, it is important to research the breed or species carefully. Consider their typical behaviour, energy levels, health needs, and how well they suit your lifestyle. connaught house vets Dental disease is one of the most common and easily overlooked conditions we see in pets. It can range from mild, subclinical changes to severe gingivitis, tooth root abscesses, and significant pain. Knowing which treatments are appropriate, and when, is not always straightforward for owners. The progression is similar to that in people. A soft, white film of plaque forms on the teeth, and over time bacteria colonise it. This leads to mineral deposits, and once the plaque calcifies it becomes tartar, which appears yellow to brown. Tartar harbours even more bacteria contributing to cavities, and inflammation of the gums (gingivitis). Left unchecked, this process can damage the structures supporting the tooth, eventually causing loose or infected teeth.

Once significant tartar has formed, it must be removed mechanically. Veterinary teams perform this with ultrasonic scaling and polishing under general anaesthetic, as pets simply won’t tolerate having their mouths held open while delicate instruments are used. Anaesthesia also allows for a thorough oral examination and probing around each tooth to detect pockets or hidden disease. Teeth with advanced pathology often need extraction to eliminate ongoing pain. Regular home care and timely professional cleaning greatly reduce the need for extractions and keep pets more comfortable throughout their lives.

Prevention is by far the best treatment. Plaque can be removed with regular brushing, ideally daily, and petspecific toothbrushes and pastes are widely available. Products containing seaweed extracts or chlorhexidine can also help reduce plaque and bacterial load when added to food or water, although they are not a substitute for brushing.

turmeric & honey glazed chicken thigh with pearl barley, shallots & garlic, roasted new potatoes and green salad

INGREDIENTS:

FOR THE CHICKEN 8 large chicken thighs 1 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp runny honey 1½ tsp ground turmeric 1 tsp smoked paprika 1 garlic clove, grated Juice of ½ lemon Salt & pepper PEARL BARLEY 200g pearl barley, rinsed 600ml chicken or veg stock 2 shallots, finely sliced 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 tbsp olive oil Small bunch parsley, chopped Salt & pepper ROASTED NEW POTATOES 600g baby new potatoes, halved 1 tbsp olive oil Salt, pepper FOR THE JUS Chicken resting juices 150ml chicken stock Splash of white wine (optional) Squeeze of lemon Salt & pepper

METHOD: 1. MARINADE & COOK THE CHICKEN • Mix the honey, turmeric, grated garlic, paprika, olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper • Toss the chicken thighs in the marinade, ideally 30 minutes or overnight • Place thighs skin-side up on a roasting tray and bake at 190°C for 25–30 • Minutes until golden, glazed and cooked through • Reserve all roasting juices for the jus 2. PEARL BARLEY WITH SHALLOTS & GARLIC • Heat olive oil in a pan, gently cook the sliced shallots for 5 minutes • Add garlic and cook 1 minute • Add pearl barley and toast for 1 minute • Pour in stock, bring to a simmer, cover and cook 30–35 minutes until tender • Season and stir in chopped parsley 3. ROASTED NEW POTATOES • Toss potatoes with olive oil, salt, pepper and rosemary/thyme if using. • Roast at 200°C for 30–35 minutes until crisp and golden 4. MAKE THE JUS • Pour roasting juices into a small pan • Add stock, wine (optional) and lemon • Reduce gently until glossy and light — not thick like gravy • Adjust seasoning 5. SERVE • Spoon the pearl barley into your bowls with 2 thighs per person and simply drizzle the jus over the top • Mix together a selection of green herbs, rocket, steam broccoli and beans. Season and drizzle with a little olive oil • Serve with a few potatoes each

INGREDIENTS: FOR THE SET YOGHURT 500g Greek yoghurt 4 passion fruits 1–2 tbsp honey or agave (optional — keep it almost sugarfree) 2 gelatine leaves (or 1 sachet powdered gelatine) 1 tsp vanilla extract Zest of ½ lime FOR THE FRUIT 2 ripe peaches, thinly sliced (or tinned peaches in juice if out of season) 6–8 physalis, husks opened back for presentation WHIPPED CREAM 150ml double cream (or coconut cream for lighter version) ½ tsp vanilla Sweeten with ½ tbsp honey only if needed

MAKE THE SET YOGHURT • Soften gelatine in cold water for 5 minutes (if using leaves) • In a small saucepan, warm 100g of the yoghurt with the lime zest and vanilla — don’t boil • Squeeze gelatine leaves and stir into warm yoghurt until fully dissolved • Remove from heat and whisk in: • the rest of the yoghurt • passion fruit pulp or purée • honey/agave (optional) • Pour into ramekins, glasses, or moulds • Chill 3 hours minimum until lightly set 2. PREPARE THE FRUIT • Slice peaches thinly • Keep physalis whole with the husks pulled back for garnish • If peaches are firm, dress lightly with a squeeze of lime to soften 3. WHIP THE CREAM • Whip the cream with vanilla until soft peaks • Add a tiny drizzle of honey only if needed • Keep it light — this dessert is meant to be fresh, not heavy 4. TO SERVE • Add sliced/diced peaches on top • Add one quenelle or small dollop of whipped cream • Finish with a physalis on each portion for colour and height

sparkle and shine at wrekin prep From sports trophies and snakes to fundraising and childhood in the 1950s Shropshire’s oldest prep school has celebrated a vibrant first term under its new name of Wrekin Prep.

in January, said she couldn’t be prouder of the Wrekin Prep community and its endless energy and enthusiasm for learning. “I challenged my staff and the pupils when we officially launched Wrekin Prep to be ambitious for what our school could do but also how it would make a lasting impact for our children and the wider community,” she added.

The school in Wellington has clinched victory in prestigious tournaments, welcomed numerous visitors and speakers, headed out on a wide range of trips and joined together for events celebrating its close-knit community since the official launch of its new name in September.

“They have taken that challenge and added their own, and surpassed my expectations with how much they pack into each day. I am very proud of the daily timetable which includes formal sports lessons four times a week but also the extra initiatives and clubs that give children a chance to not only learn but excel at what they are good at.

During this term, Wrekin Prep has also celebrated the fundraising efforts of pupils who have taken part in inspirational efforts to help others outside school and held its own appeal for Harvest Festival donations, as well as setting up a donation station within school in partnership with a local food bank.

“Confidence in learning comes from not being afraid to give something a go but also opportunities to achieve and stretch the skills that you have and are continuing to develop.

Sport has continued to be an area where the school is flourishing year after year with its football teams building on last year’s county success picking up even more titles and trophies.

“We know a ‘one size fits all’ approach doesn’t work which is why we have specialist teachers in art, science, drama and music together with a dedicated sport and games team of staff. Curating a bespoke education for each child is really important but also ensuring we maximise all the wonderful facilities and outside space we have here to give the very best education possible.”

Sport has proved to be a hugely busy department with dozens of fixtures and every child swimming at least once a week in the 25m pool on its campus shared with Wrekin College, and the annual Year 5 and 6 swimming gala towards the end of term was another momentous sporting occasion.

san francisco – the enthralling city by the bay

Photographer Bogdan Zlatkov offers guests the highest level of comfort and service. Check-in procedures were swift and ultra efficient, my luggage was whisked away and I was escorted to the luxurious Nob Hill Suite, measuring 600sq ft. The soothing décor in muted colours with plush carpeting and drapes creates the ideal sanctuary in which to unwind. After sinking into the marble bathtub, full to the brim with complimentary Asprey bubbles I climbed into the king size bed, swathed with soft, white linens and succumbed to a deep slumber.

By Rebecca Underwood, Travel Journalist For those of us who love city life, San Francisco offers the hustle and bustle of a thriving and exciting metropolis and although it covers only 49 square miles there is much to explore as each of its eleven districts reflects a distinct culture and vibe and I was keen to take advantage of my short visit and explore the most popular areas.

Up with the larks, I headed for Parallel 37, the hotel’s casual restaurant, and indulged in a first class American breakfast. Sipping on my second cup of piping hot coffee I succumbed to the temptation and ordered two delicious waffles with Maple syrup as I planned my activities. After such a treat and with the urgent need to burn off those calories before they reached my waist line, I sprinted along to Union Square and hopped on a cable car bound for the Ferry Building. San Francisco operates the world’s largest manually controlled cable car network and the experience of a ride on one was high on my list. Holding on tight, with the cable car clanging its way along and climbing the steep hills I struck up a conversation with a family and their young children who

I was thrilled by my first encounter with the Golden Gate Bridge when I arrived at Baker Beach and sank down onto the soft sand to take in the spectacular view. Spanning the Golden Gate, the narrow strait connecting the mighty Pacific Ocean to San Francisco Bay, this iconic suspension bridge is recognised around the world and dates back to 1933, when construction began. With a length of 2.74 km, a width of 27.4 metres and soaring to a height of 227.4 metres it is a simply magnificent structure and demands the admiration of all those who get up close and personal.

were giggling with delight as the cable car reverberated and soon enough we were all bouncing up and down on the wooden seats with glee. Disembarking with the Pacific Ocean salty air in my nostrils I headed for Pier 33 to embark on the ferry bound for Alcatraz Island. A short crossing (one mile and a quarter) over the shark infested waters of San Francisco Bay and I arrived at a most desolate spot that was once a maximum security federal penitentiary incarcerating Al ‘Scarface’ Capone, Robert Stroud (Birdman of Alcatraz) and George ‘Machine Gun’ Kelly. The window less cell house with barred cells measuring five feet by nine feet (neighbouring inmates were able to observe fellow convict’s bathroom rituals) consist of cement walls, a steel framed bed with a thin mattress, a sink with a single cold water tap, a toilet without a seat and a small table and chair that folds down from the wall. It is an absolutely fascinating but chilling sight.

Back in the free world I took a leisurely stroll around the Ferry Building, which dates back to 1898 and today houses more than fifty small eateries, restaurants and food merchants. I was drawn to the very busy Hog Island Oyster Company, where I selected a table next to a floor to ceiling window. Whilst I admired the view of San Francisco Bay I devoured the delicious clam chowder and accompanied by a chilled glass of house white, it was a first rate dining experience.

Japanese Tea Garden and the San Francisco Botanical Garden. With 24 million visitors every year I was determined to find out more. The Conservatory of Flowers, which has been a historic landmark since 1879, houses an abundance of rare flowers and plants from around the world. There are five distinct galleries focusing on different ecosystems and I spent a long time wandering around the Aquatic Plants section where I was charmed by a series of pools imitating the flow of a river meandering through the tropics and I was enchanted by the spectacular Giant Water Lily and the Beach Spider Lily, which produces a beautiful fragrance.

Out on the wharf I strolled along to Pier 39 and the viewing platform to see some local residents. The California sea lions amuse the crowds with their playful antics as they bask in the sunshine, squabble over the best lounging spots and complain by making very loud barking sounds, which, at times, reach an almighty crescendo.

The de Young Museum, which is a very short walk away, exhibits a diverse collection of fine arts. I wandered around the Irving Penn exhibition, which runs until July ‘24. One of the 20th century’s most celebrated photographer’s, Penn, Vogue’s longest-standing contributor, transformed fashion photography in the post-war age. I was mesmerised by his photographs reflecting on 1967 and San Francisco’s Summer of Love. Wonderful images of hippies (also known as flower children), members of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club and local rock bands including the Grateful Dead come to life.

honda jazz crosstar hybrid The Honda Jazz brought a unique approach to the car market, its internal space belies its external dimensions and now nearly 24 years plus after the 1st incarnation of the Jazz, the latest derivative has hit the streets, writes Bob Hickman. The Jazz Crosstar has new front and rear bumpers, cladding around the sills, a different grille and roof rails in addition much larger wheels are fitted to mark it out from the regular Honda Jazz and it is also 30mm taller thanks in part to raised suspension. This Crosstar derivative of the Jazz has introduced sporty styling and increased specification levels and an increase in performance with more power available. Externally the changes are simple, the iconic shape of the Jazz hasn’t really changed. It is the interior and the driving dynamics that are the most important aspects. It has been built to comply with all the green issues and the ultra-efficient hybrid power train now has 10kW increase in power for a smoother, more refined driving experience. The hybrid technology and increased power output to 90kW ensures proper responses, improved performance and extra power. Although extra power has been achieved it has not seen an increase in CO2 emissions and this is an important feature.

The driver has all of the features that I yearn for in manufacturers, whilst there is a huge infotainment screen indicating what is possible to do, it is quite pleasant to report that the actual control is done within a row of buttons for the heating and air conditioning system below the screen but on the actual transmission touch tunnel is a circular button which enables you to dial in various functions which then show up on the screen itself. Yes, there are quite a few buttons on the steering wheel but it is just wonderful to be reverted back and away from everything being controlled by the touchscreen. The test vehicle came with a large 2.5-litre petrol engine, this is allied to a 8-speed automatic gearbox which worked well. A vehicle of this size and dimensions is never going to be the most economical of vehicles, the CO emissions however are on the low side. Fuel consumption according to computer was about 44.7mpg and this was over a varied range and with electric power occasionally kicking in.

All in all, the Mazda CX-80 should be on your shopping list if your family warrants a vehicle of this size and even 5 adults with the rear seats folded down you have a huge luggage capacity. The Mazda CX-80 has a 3-year or 60,000 miles warranty and the battery has been guaranteed for 8 years.

The CX-80 has the full 5* Euro NCAP safety rating and this is particularly impressive as this is primarily
