They say “it’s all in the details,” and nowhere is that more true than on your wedding day. In this issue, we highlight several weddings that beautifully capture this sentiment. Often, these are the tiny touches that might be missed by a guest, or even by a bride in the whirlwind of her big day, but we recognize the immense thought and heart poured into every single choice.
On my own wedding day, the details were just as important to me: custom wine bottles with labels that had quotes meaningful to my husband and me, and Edelweiss flowers at the tables to honor my Swiss heritage. It’s small choices like these that made the day feel unmistakably ours.
I am so excited to showcase four weddings in this issue that lean into that same level of intentionality. But our focus on the "little things" extends well beyond the ceremony itself. We explore the journey before and after the "I do's", from the intricate art of designing a custom wedding ring to the charm of incorporating vintage heirloom furniture into your new home decor. Whether you are looking for tips on a seamless 'mini-moon' or seeking a wellness routine that nourishes your body and mind amid the planning, I hope this issue inspires you to find beauty, and balance, in the small things.

We often talk about the “bridal glow” as though it’s something found in a bottle of highlighter or a silk gown, but any wedding veteran knows that true radiance starts from within. In the whirlwind of managing budgets, coordinating seating charts, and dress shopping, it’s easy for your well-being to slip to the bottom of the to-do list. But the most important preparation you can do for your wedding day isn’t found on a Pinterest board, it’s how you nourish your body and mind.
To help you navigate the planning jitters and keep your energy high, we sat down with local fitness expert Callie Pierce, founder of CallieFIT. Having coached plenty of brides through their own journeys, Callie understands the unique pressure of the wedding spotlight. Together, we’re shifting the conversation from bridal prep to bridal wellness, focusing on movement that empowers you and mindset shifts that keep the stress at bay.

Many brides come to Callie with high expectations and a looming deadline, often feeling the crunch of time. “A crash diet with low calories and a lot of running is often the first thing people think of,” Callie notes. “In reality, you want to do the exact opposite. Small habits lead to big results that you carry with you long after the wedding is over.” To avoid the late-stage panic, Callie suggests a tiered approach.
6 Months Out: Building the Foundation Early on, the goal is consistency without the chaos. Focus on establishing a low-stress routine. Callie recommends strength training as a primary tool; not only does it shape the physique, but it releases the heavy-hitting endorphins needed to tackle a growing guest list.
3 Months Out: The “Mini-Cut” Phase This is where the strategy shifts slightly. “At the three-month mark, we incorporate a 'mini-cut,' adjusting calories to support fat loss while adding a few cardio days to the mix,” Callie explains. The variety, mixing lifting with cardio, keeps the body responding and the mind engaged.
1 Month Out: The Nervous System Reset As the date nears, cortisol levels (the stress hormone) naturally spike. This is the time to prioritize sleep, hydration, and “movement snacks.” Shift your focus to flexibility and mobility, like Yoga or Pilates, to combat the physical tension of hours spent at a desk finishing DIY projects or seating charts.
Small habits lead to big results that you carry with you long after the wedding is over.

In order to establish a movement routine as a stress management tool, Callie says, “This is your time! Turn everything else off. No phones, no notifications. Use this time to focus on you, release endorphins, and have some fun. You don’t have to spend hours in a gym. Get outside, take a group class, do something you enjoy!” In other words, don’t think of it as just another item on a high-pressure checklist.
While exercise is an obvious piece of the health puzzle, Callie is firm on one fact: “Exercise will only get you so far; nutrition is what drives results and changes your body.” And, for Callie, nutrition isn't about restriction; it’s about developing a balancing act.
One of the most unique aspects of the CallieFIT program is her “rebound prevention” strategy. While Callie’s program will teach you about tracking your food, if a bride becomes too fixated or fearful of food, Callie will take them off tracking for weeks at a time. Her goal is to prevent the “crash-and-rebound” cycle that often happens after a honeymoon or big event. The goal is to meet goals sustainably; otherwise, what’s the point?
Her rule of thumb: Keep it simple—with real, whole foods over processed protein bars. To make it easy for the busy bride, she recommends the “Hand Portion” method:
Protein:
A portion the size of your palm (4-5 oz).
Fiber/Grains/Fruits:
A portion the size of your fist (approx. 1 cup).
Healthy Fats:
A portion the size of your thumb (1 tablespoon of oils or butters).
The Golden Rule:
Aim for protein at every meal and at least 4-5 different colors on your plate throughout the day.
Callie’s advice doesn't stop at the gym door; it extends to the wedding morning itself. Recalling her own experience training for a half-marathon while wedding planning, she emphasizes the importance of a “Day-Of” routine.
“I didn't sleep at all the night before my wedding,” Callie admits, “but because I had a solid nutrition routine, I knew what to eat to feel my best and fuel my body without a second thought.” She remembers having a high-protein breakfast and keeping caffeine in check.
Her final piece of wisdom for any bride feeling the weight of perfectionism? “The day goes by so fast. You won’t even see half of the things you planned. Pick your top five priorities— maybe the DJ, the open bar, and the photography—and let everything else roll off your back.” The show will go on, whether the napkins are the right shade of ivory or not.
No time for the gym? Callie suggests this quick sequence to release the planning tension held in your neck and shoulders:
Deep Breathing: 2 minutes (inhale for 4 counts, exhale for 7).
Shoulder & Neck Rolls: 10 reps each way.
Scapular Pull Backs: 10 reps (hold for 3 seconds).
Doorway Stretch: 30 seconds per side to open the chest.
Neck Retractions: 10 reps to reset posture.

For those preparing to walk down the aisle, the “wedding glow” is often a top priority. But for Dr. Carlos Paz, founder of Paz Dermatology, skincare is not a moment – it is a lifelong commitment to health, confidence, and excellence.
As Paz Dermatology celebrates its ten-year anniversary in Visalia, the practice is marking this milestone by opening a stunning new office, conveniently located off the Akers exit on Highway 198. This expansion brings gold-standard dermatological care directly to the South Valley.
Dr. Paz and his wife, Vivian Paz, are both truly homegrown. Dr. Paz, the youngest of seven children, was raised in Parlier, where his parents worked in agriculture. Vivian grew up in nearby Laton and frequently visited Tulare County to see family.
Both were academically gifted, and with the guidance of teachers, mentors, and programs such as the Ivy League Project, they applied to—and were accepted by— some of the top universities in the country.
Dr. Paz’s journey led him to the nation’s most prestigious institutions, including Yale University and Harvard Medical School, where he earned a PhD and medical degree. He then joined the National Institutes of Health to study a skin disease called Leishmaniasis in Mali, Africa. Dr. Paz continued his training and specializations at the University of California, San Francisco, the University of Chicago, and Skin and Cancer Associates in South Florida.
In 2013, Dr. Paz and Vivian founded Paz Dermatology in Fresno, returning home to serve their community and bringing a level of expertise rarely found outside major metropolitan centers. A few years later they established a second office in Visalia.
With degrees from Brown University and Berkeley School of Law, and a background in litigation, Vivian shifted her professional focus to help build Paz Dermatology while raising their two daughters. She also uses her expertise to support community organizations such as the Central Valley Community Foundation and Arte Américas. She was also recently selected to join The James Irvine Foundation’s board of directors.
As a board-certified dermatologist and fellowship-trained dermatologic surgeon specializing in Mohs Micrographic Surgery for skin cancer, Dr. Paz is one of the only providers in the region with this dual distinction. His practice bridges medical necessity and aesthetic enhancements, ensuring patients receive personalized, integrated care plans.
Paz Dermatology offers a full spectrum of services, ensuring patients are supported from preventative screenings to aesthetic treatments. Dr. Paz works closely with an exceptional team of providers to ensure the highest standard of care. As a family-run practice, patients are treated as an extension of the Paz family.

Curating your ideal wedding decor can feel like a daunting task. How do you select pieces that feel timeless? How can you make your wedding unique to you? With an endless sea of rental options, Pinterest boards and Instagram carousels, how do you home in on the pieces that will set your special day apart? Answer: Antiques.
Antiques and vintage pieces infuse a home with instant character. They bring a richness to everyday life, and their stories can be handed down for generations to come. Why not start writing those stories on your wedding day?
Including antiques in your wedding day design not only adds a layer of individuality, it allows you to use these pieces in your own home and incorporate wedding day memories in your everyday life. Here, we’re sharing ideas to make it easy for antiques to do double duty in your event and your space. Get ready to hit your favorite shops in search of the perfect pieces.

If your big day has a rustic feel, a vintage farm table makes a character-rich backdrop for a grazing table during cocktail hour. For a more formal affair, an antique dining table would be ideal as a welcome table with seating cards or even a champagne station. When the big day is done, just add chairs and you’ll have the perfect piece to entertain with at home.
Urns, vases, planters and bowls—from the ceremony’s backdrop to tabletop decor, antique or vintage vessels are an easy way to incorporate a unique look. Team up with your florist to create a cohesive vision, and let the hunt for character-rich containers begin. You’ll be left with a collection to use for future tablescapes and everyday bouquets.
There’s no such thing as too many photo ops at your wedding. Create a beautiful scene and a spot for guests to kick back with a pair of vintage arm chairs and maybe even a rug or two. Your guests will love lounging and posing, and you’ll have multiple pieces to take home to your living space.

Vintage cut glass and crystal is fun to collect, readily available, and always in style. Gather glasses in the months leading up to the wedding for serving your signature drink, and you’ll be stocked and ready for holidays and cocktail parties for years to come.
If you’re considering a sweetheart’s table for your reception, try finding an antique table and chairs for the occasion. Small tables and pairs of chairs are in high supply at most antique and vintage stores, and you’ll be able to find one that suits your style. At home, you can easily transition the same set-up in a breakfast nook or small dining space.
Once you have an aesthetic vision for your wedding, scour your favorite local spots for pieces that fit the bill. Antique stores, vintage malls, thrift shops, and estate sales are all full of finds you’ll enjoy for years to come, along with websites like Etsy, Chairish and 1stdibs. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you’re out shopping—antique and vintage vendors love to share their unique finds. Happy hunting! 1 2 3 4 5 3 4 4

There is a certain magic that happens when a couple’s personality meets a designer’s vision. It’s found in the small gestures and the grand reveals. In this edition of the Wedding Lookbook, we’re following four couples down the aisle to discover how they turned their “I do” into a work of art. Travel with us through four different worlds of design, where every photo tells a story and every detail is a love letter to the big day.

Our wedding day was a celebration of love, family, and friendship, filled with moments we will treasure forever. We are deeply grateful to our parents, whose guidance and support made every step of our journey leading up to the big day meaningful. Our family and friends brought laughter, joy, and unwavering love, making the entire experience unforgettable.
We were fortunate to work with incredibly talented vendors who brought our vision to life with care and creativity. A special thank you to Kim at Kimberly Joy Events, whose care and support guided us through every step and made the journey to our wedding day truly memorable.
Every detail, every smile, and every moment felt magical. Surrounded by the people who mean the most to us, we felt a love and connection that will stay with us forever. We are endlessly thankful to everyone who helped make our day so special.

There is something deeply special about designing a wedding on a family estate, especially one rooted in the Central Valley. For Mikayla Marini and Mac Dalena, this wasn’t simply a place to host a celebration. It was home. From the very beginning, our goal was to honor that sense of legacy while thoughtfully elevating the space into something timeless and refined. Estate weddings come with their own set of rules, and spring weather always keeps you on your toes. Tenting, floor plans, flow, and contingency plans were considered early on, allowing us to design with both beauty and flexibility in mind. When the weather required us to pivot, the plan was already in place, so the day unfolded seamlessly without guests ever feeling the shift. The design leaned into layered neutrals, soft draping that moved with the space, warm candlelight, and chandeliers that brought intimacy and glow as the evening set in. Each element was chosen with intention, allowing texture, light, and proportion to lead the experience. What made the day truly memorable was the way it felt. Family was at the center of every moment, and the celebration carried a sense of ease, warmth, and intention that can only come from thoughtful planning and deep roots. It was a beautiful reminder that elegance doesn’t have to be loud. It can be grounded, personal, and quietly unforgettable.

Spencer and Samantha Christensen were introduced through mutual friends after Spencer returned from his Army deployment in the Middle East. Bonding over their love for the outdoors and an adventurous lifestyle, the two quickly became inseparable. Spencer proposed on his family’s vineyard in Madera, the same place as their first date. Their wedding at The Manor Estate, planned by Rochelle at The Social Spree, took place after a rainy day cleared just in time for the ceremony. The couple shared, “Our wedding was a dream come true, and we couldn’t have done it without Rochelle and her team, who stayed calm and collected through unpredictable weather and made the entire day feel effortless, down to the smallest details.”

The Ewings approached their wedding day with a sense of ease that carried through every part of the celebration. Spending the day here, I quickly became aware of how naturally The Richland supported a calm, documentary approach with an environment that felt inviting without excess. Haley and Ethyn moved through it without interruptions, letting the day unfold naturally around them. Just minutes from downtown Orange, the venue kept them connected to the city while remaining focused on the people within it.

For some of us, date night isn’t complete without indulging in a sweet treat. We’ve rounded up a few of the most decadent spots where you and your partner can indulge in everything from handmade Italian cakes to gourmet ice cream.
More than just a meal, stepping through the doors of Vintage Press is like entering a time capsule back into an old Hollywood film. You can’t help but notice the leaded windows, ornate lights, a dazzling bar, and feel the undeniable old-world elegance of the restaurant.

Enjoy a classically romantic date night, while melodies from a live pianist drift throughout the room, and take a peek at their decadent dessert list.

• Pumpkin Bread Pudding with Vanilla Ice Cream
• Vintage Press Cheesecake with Berry Coulis
• Warm Apple Crepe with Caramel Sauce and Vanilla Ice Cream
• Chocolate Pistachio Cake with Espresso Ice Cream

Elderwood is arguably the best seat in Visalia when it comes to dining views. Located on the rooftop of The Darling Hotel, enjoy panoramic views of the Sierra Nevadas during the day. Or book an evening reservation to watch the city lights twinkle below.
• Chocolate Cheesecake
• Basque Cake
• Creme Brulee

There's nothing more classic than sharing a milkshake at the end of your date night. Take a scenic drive to the foothills, explore local nature, and check out the gem that is Reimer’s Candies and Gifts. You’ll know you’ve made it when you smell the buttery scent of freshly baked waffle cones. Between their homemade chocolates, vintage candies, and unique ice cream, there’s something for every kind of sweet tooth.
Once you pick your treat, head out the backdoor of the gift shop for a seat that overlooks the river and enjoy the sounds of windchimes and bird song. Can’t pick an ice cream flavor? Here’s a few local favorites.
• Three Rivers Wild Blackberry
• Honey Lavender
• Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough
• Ooey-Gooey (Fudge-Caramel Cake Batter)
• Pistachio Almond

The“Just Married” glow shouldn’t have to wait for a 12-hour flight to Tuscany. Especially when world-class luxury is tucked away just past the orange groves and foothills. Whether you’re looking to wake up to the sound of the Pacific or the rustle of giant sequoias, these three destinations offer honeymoon vibes within a three-hour drive of Main Street.

The Drive: ~3 hours.
The Vibe: Ethereal, secluded, and architectural.
The Stay: For the couple that wants to disappear. Perched 1,200 feet above the Pacific, this is widely considered one of the most romantic hotels in the world. With no televisions or alarm clocks, the focus remains entirely on the views and each other.
The “Mini-Moon” Moment: A sunset soak in the cliffside infinity jade pools followed by a multi-course dinner at Sierra Mar.
The Drive: ~2.5 hours.
The Vibe: Historic grandeur and breathtaking “wow” factor.
The Stay: If you want your mini-moon to feel like a royal affair, head into our own backyard. The Ahwahnee’s soaring ceilings and stone fireplaces offer a sense of timelessness. Ask for a suite with a view of Half Dome to watch the “Alpenglow” transform the granite at dusk.
The “Mini-Moon” Moment: Sharing a bottle of local wine on the lawn while the valley walls turn gold, followed by a private guided tour of the park’s hidden falls.
The Drive: ~3 hours.
The Vibe: Spanish Revival meets modern Moroccan chic.
The Stay: If you’re craving a “destination” feel without the passport, the Funk Zone in Santa Barbara is your answer. This hotel is a masterclass in design—think custom tiles, plush velvet, and rooftop views of the Santa Ynez mountains.
The “Mini-Moon” Moment: A couples’ treatment at the Moroccan-inspired Majorelle Spa, followed by a tasting tour of the nearby boutique wineries along the Urban Wine Trail.
While we love a grand European tour, there is something deeply romantic about starting your new life together by exploring the beauty of the state you call home.

Words by Major Rogers
The time had come to propose to my girlfriend Casandra. As per the playbook, my next step was to get the ring. I called my good friend Steve Foster, a second-generation owner of the Fresno Coin Gallery and Visalia Jewelry and Loan. With years of experience in jewelry and engagement rings, he supplied helpful insights into the process. Here is what I learned while moving from concept to creation.
First, Steve inquired: “Do you want to ask her about the ring design or not?” Does a person want the ring to be given, sight unseen to the recipient, which either puts the ring in danger of being rejected, or in luck of being accepted, based on the giver’s tastes? After some thought, I sent Casandra five or six examples of different designs, to get an idea. That turned out to be helpful, while still leaving some suspense in the final product.
I was once, like many other men, confused about the allure of diamonds to women. I’ve since realized they’re a symbol of something both undeniably traditional and rare. But every stone doesn’t need to be precious to be prized.

Some men know the kind of ring they want to offer, but may not have the budget for it now. One option is to build the setting from a chosen metal (platinum, white gold, silver, or gold) with cubic zirconia stones, which can be replaced over time with natural diamonds when it works financially. Ultimately, the end product will be your dream design. I know someone who proposed with a costume ring from Walmart. The $30 ring’s elegant design, but cheap materials were replaced and re-created with precious elements after the proposal. Another friend, in a moment of spontaneous passion in Paris, used a simple band bought from a tourist hut to propose on top of the Eiffel Tower. The near-worthless ring became priceless, until the permanent traditional one was purchased. Others may wish to represent the moment with a simple symbol affordable at the time of the proposal, possibly upgrading the design in the future. Some may simply exchange bands. The important thing to remember is that the gesture is just between you two—nothing else matters.

sky.

Diamonds are the modern traditional stone in engagement and wedding rings. The stone grew considerably in popularity due to a prominent De Beers campaign in 1947: “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend.” These stones are graded on a chart, with clarity, cut, color, and carat all factoring into brilliance and price. That’s how the market has always been, until recently, with the advancement of brilliant lab-created diamonds. These are not the cubic zirconias of the past. These diamonds sparkle, and are undetectable to the trained eye, even under a jeweler’s loupe, making them truly beautiful to see. The choice of a lab-created design can come from different wants. Some simply like the look, sparkle, and clarity of the produced diamond at a relatively lower cost than the naturally created ones. For those who want an naturally grown diamond, great news: The market for both lab-created and natural diamonds has never been better for the consumer. With added stone options, natural diamond producers have dropped prices to stay competitive. And once pricier lab-created diamonds have been reduced in price with new companies joining the created diamond market.
Ultimately, I decided to go with a custom ring design. Steve connected me to one of his master jewelers at the gallery, and soon after, we went to work. I wanted to create something that represented how Casandra was everything to me. I considered Casandra’s personality, too, and what started out as a few of my crude sketches, were soon refined into the jeweler’s computer images. It was an amazing way to confidently construct the piece as it went into casting. The ring design is based on how she became my whole world: The center band is split in half, with one side as the sky and constellations, and the other the rough waters of the planet. The center stone represents the moon, haloed by the Earth behind. Each band is half-circled in turquoise to represent the soil, and her ties to it. On the backside, small family birthstones will always be with her.
I remember the anticipation of opening the box to see the ring, and the satisfaction of knowing it was perfect. These feelings were topped only by hearing the word “Yes,” when I presented the ring.
Purchasing an engagement ring is a symbol of love in a proposal of marriage, an act far older than diamond rings. When the time comes, have fun with it, and be creative when you put forever on a finger.

Nothing says “I love you” quite like a warm, molten center. If you’re looking for a Valentine’s Day project that delivers maximum “wow” factor with minimum stress, this Dark Chocolate Lava Cake is it. In under 30 minutes, you can transform pantry staples into a decadent, restaurant-quality dessert. The deep cocoa and bright raspberry sauce don’t just taste incredible together, the red-and-chocolate palette is practically made for your Valentine’s Day table.
The Cakes:
4 oz bittersweet baking chocolate, chopped
1/2 cup unsalted butter, plus more for prepping ramekins
2 large eggs + 2 egg yolks
1 cup powdered sugar
Salt
6 tablespoons all-purpose flour
Cocoa powder
Powdered sugar, for dusting
The Sauce:
6 oz raspberries (fresh or frozen)
2 tablespoon granulated sugar
1 teaspoon lemon juice

1. Prep: Preheat oven to 425°F. Butter four 6 oz ramekins and dust with cocoa powder.
2. The Sauce: Simmer raspberries, sugar, and lemon juice for 5-7 minutes. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve to remove seeds; set aside.
3. The Batter: Melt chocolate and butter together until smooth. In a separate bowl, whisk eggs, yolks, sugar, and salt until pale. Whisk the chocolate mixture into the eggs, then gently fold in the flour.
4. Bake: Divide batter into ramekins. Bake for 12–14 minutes until sides are firm but the center is still jiggly.
5. The “Heart” Plate: Let cakes cool for 1 minute, then invert onto plates. Drop three dots of sauce in a row; drag a toothpick through the centers to create a chain of hearts. Dust with powdered sugar and serve warm.

In the heart of downtown Visalia, a fitness revolution is taking place. One that bridges the gap between the mindful precision of Pilates and the raw power of functional strength training. Burn Pilates and Strength Training isn’t just another boutique studio; it is a community-driven powerhouse born from a vision to help people move better, feel stronger, and thrive in their daily lives.

OUR MISSION IS TO HELP CREATE A COMMUNITY OF LIKE-MINDED PEOPLE WHO LOVE BEING HEALTHY
The journey of Burn Pilates began in 2023 in nearby Hanford. Founded by Dianna Cochrane—a certified Pilates instructor, biomechanics specialist, and personal trainer—the studio was built on a simple yet profound philosophy: “Self-love through discipline.”
Dianna, the wife of a Naval Aviator stationed at NAS Lemoore, brought a unique blend of athletic performance and rehabilitative expertise to the Central Valley. Dianna set out to create a space where the traditional Pilates method could be enhanced by modern biomechanics and strength training. The goal was never just about aesthetics; it was about teaching individuals how to support their bodies through proper alignment and functional training.
Community response was immediate and overwhelming. What started as a small dream in Hanford quickly expanded, leading to the opening of their Visalia location at 216 West Main Street. Today, Burn Pilates is recognized as a destination for those seeking high-energy, full-body workouts that challenge both the mind and the muscles.
At its core, Burn Pilates focuses on “functional movement.” Every 50-minute session is designed to awaken the deep stabilizing muscles, the ones you never even knew existed, while improving mobility, coordination, and posture. By utilizing the iconic Pilates Reformer and other Pilates apparatus, the studio offers a low-impact yet high-intensity environment suitable for everyone, from professional athletes to those recovering from injury or navigating pregnancy. Ultimately, they’re guided by this statement:
“Our mission is to help create a community of like-minded people who love being healthy, strong, and more in touch with their bodies. Keeping you healthy and making daily movement easy is our goal.”

In addition to the benefits of Pilates, Burn is also passionate about strength training. The success of the Hanford and Visalia pilates studio led to the exciting launch of the Burn Strength Studio, located right next door to the Visalia studio space at 214 West Main Street.
The Burn Strength Studio is a dedicated environment designed to complement your Pilates practice. It moves beyond pilates equipment and into the world of:
• Free Weights & Resistance: Building lean muscle mass and bone density.
• Cardio Conditioning: Utilizing rowers and fan bikes to boost metabolic health.
• Functional Movement: Exercises that translate directly to real-world strength, like lifting groceries or playing with your kids.
For members, this means a “one-stop shop” for total body wellness. You can find your center and core stability on the reformer or tower one day, and push your cardiovascular and muscular endurance in a Strength class the next.
Whether you are a seasoned “Pilates pro” or a complete beginner, Burn Pilates offers an inclusive, welcoming atmosphere. For those new to the method, the studio offers a specialized Intro Offer, three classes for just $30, allowing you to experience the “Burn” for yourself before committing to a membership.
At Burn, every detail is curated to help you succeed. It’s time to stop just “working out” and start training for the life you want to live.

Inancient mythology, Cupid represents the god of desire and love. According to the legend, the young boy’s sole purpose for existence is to aim his bow and shoot arrows into human hearts. Ironically, instead of hurting the victims, this apparent act of violence creates an uncontrollable desire within them to fall in love, and often get married. The story of Cupid has inspired many. For me, the gifted singer-songwriter Sam Cooke captured the legend of Cupid best through the lines of his 1961 romantic hit song: “Cupid, draw back your bow and let your arrow go, straight to my lover’s heart for me.”
According to legend, Cupid’s romantic handiwork is found throughout the world, and that includes Visalia. When the first group of settlers came to this area in the fall of 1852, they built a log fortress for protection. They lived inside and invited others passing through the area to join them. Sometime in 1853, the Glenn family arrived from the Los Angeles area and were offered space inside the fort. It was a large family that included three “beautiful” sisters—Louisa, Rebecca, and Margaret—all of “marriageable” age.
The young ladies were popular, as men outnumbered women in the early years. The first recorded romance involved early pioneer William J. Campbell who on December 20, 1853, married Louisa Glenn. Their union became the first marriage in the new county of Tulare. Less than a month later, on January 12, 1954, Margaret Glenn married Richard Chatten, a cattle rancher, and in September 1854, Rebecca Glenn and John A. Patterson, another cattleman, became a couple.
But in 1894, Cupid faced a serious challenge. Lee Danner of Grangeville in Kings County and Laura Slinkard of White River in Tulare County, had an intimate relationship. That all ended when Danner refused to marry Laura. His refusal was not just a decision on his part, it was a California crime called “seduction,” a felony, as Laura was of previous chaste character. Laura wanted him prosecuted, so Danner was arrested, put on trial and a jury found him guilty. He was released pending sentencing proceedings.
While awaiting sentencing Danner met with Slinkard and asked her to marry him. She agreed, and on December 28, 1894, a simple wedding ceremony took place at the Visalia House. He hoped that the marriage would give the judge a reason to drop the charge. When the now married Danner appeared in court for sentencing, the judge was not impressed or swayed. He sentenced Danner to 1,025 days in jail or a $2,050 fine. Danner did not have the money, but a relative did, so on January 11, 1895, Danner was free.

The Visalia Daily Morning Delta commented after the release, “Danner has secured his liberty and is now a useful member of society. He married the woman he wronged…and is now welcomed back to society with open arms. Outraged womanhood has been punished and the peace and dignity of the State of California has been assuaged.”
One of the most elegant weddings in Visalia history was the marriage of Edna Butz and Dr. L.E. Carter. Edna was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George A. Butz, co-owners of Williams and Butz clothing store and she had a privileged upbringing. Dr. Carter was a newcomer to Visalia arriving from Oakland in 1908 as a dentist. Shortly thereafter, he inherited a “considerable fortune” and left dentistry to go into real estate.

In May 1909, their wedding announcement appeared in the Visalia Delta newspaper promising a ceremony that would be the “most elaborate function of the kind ever seen in Visalia,” and they were not exaggerating. The wedding day was June 2, 1909, at 11:00am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Visalia. Flowers of all varieties decorated the entire inside and the fragrance filled the church.
In the choir loft, a 4-piece orchestra played the wedding march as the procession entered the church. Matie Butz, the bride’s sister and Maid of Honor, led the party.
As Edna entered, the orchestra played the Wedding March. She was beautiful. A Delta reporter described the bride: “Her gown was a handsome empire entrain, of white duchess satin, trimmed in pearls, hand embroidery and lace. Her long flowing tulle veil was held in place by a rosette of pearls and Lilies of the Valley, and on her arm she carried a shower bouquet of white orchids.” After the ceremony, the newlyweds were off on a two-month honeymoon.
There is one more cupid intervention story worth telling. Visalia native Carl Switzer was born in 1930 to a family whose Visalia roots run deep. While a college student at San Francisco State, he considered joining the U.S. Navy officer program during the Korean conflict, but his color blindness prevented his entry into the navy. Instead he joined the U.S. Army for a two-year hitch, and served for 10 months in Korea. After military service, he almost immediately received a job offer in the radio/television business in San Francisco. For nearly eight years, the man with the golden voice worked in the Bay Area, but returned to Visalia when a job transfer threatened to take him to the east coast.

He continued in the media industry locally, and while doing so, noticed Louise Haverstock, an attractive young teacher a few years his junior. About the same time, she noticed Carl as well.
She recalls that she would see the handsome, well-dressed man regularly riding around town in a Model “A” car. Cupid’s magic worked and the two were married on August 19, 1961, at Visalia’s First Baptist Church.
Louise and Carl have two children, Dana and Alison, and many life-long friends. These two, who remain active in the community will be celebrating 65 years of marriage this year, and Carl will be turning 96 years old, as well.

Asthe thrill of the new year starts to wind down, students across Visalia settle into the last months of the school year. And so begins the countdown to spring break, and finally, the long-awaited summer vacation. Until then, classrooms chatter about new lessons and exciting projects, and students buzz with anticipation for spring events. Behind the scenes, teachers are already tallying up the costs of the upcoming school year, balancing the need for updated curriculum against the constraints of a tightening budget.

And, if you found yourself in the hallways of a local high school, you would hear conversations shift from Friday night football to college letters, vocational dreams, and the bittersweet reality of “what comes next.”
But for many local families, that excitement is tempered by a sobering question: How will we pay for it?

This concern is one of the driving forces behind The Visalia Education Foundation (VEF). Founded in 1983, VEF has served as a vital resource for families facing these financial decisions. The Foundation’s impact is measurable and growing; in 2024, the Foundation awarded $46,000 to local high school seniors. Recognizing that a student’s potential should never be limited by their economic circumstances, VEF provides a critical bridge between our community and a more impactful education.
The Visalia Education Foundation operates on the core principle that supporting a student today is a direct investment in the city’s future. And so, their mission begins long before a student walks across the graduation stage.
Through its grant program, VEF empowers local educators to bring innovative ideas to life. These grants provide the necessary funding for “extras” that traditional school budgets may not cover, such as: advanced science equipment, specialized art supplies, or modern classroom technology. In just 2025, the Foundation awarded about $30,000 between their Mini and Major Grants. When a staff member identifies a unique way to engage their students, VEF provides the resources to turn that vision into a reality, enhancing the daily learning experience for children across the district.
One of the most visible examples of community support is the annual Band Showcase. This high-energy event allows Visalia’s high school band, cheer, and dance programs to demonstrate their halftime shows to a live audience. Beyond entertainment, the Showcase serves a greater purpose: all proceeds from the event go directly back into the performing arts programs. These funds are essential for maintaining instruments, purchasing uniforms, and ensuring that these programs remain a vibrant part of the Visalia school experience.
This March, VEF will also host The Scholars and Spurs Round Up, a country-themed fundraiser event! The night will include: a silent auction, a live DJ, dancing, dinner, and a cash bar. Sponsorship opportunities are available with more information on their website.
As a non-profit organization, VEF relies entirely on the generosity of the community. Their mission is clear: “to secure and distribute contributions from individuals, corporations, and foundations for the benefit of students of the Visalia Unified School District.” These resources are shared across four pillars:
• Student scholarships for graduating seniors
• Teacher grants designed to fund classroom projects.
• Increased student access to curriculum, modern technology, and tools.
• Educational enhancements that fall outside the traditional school district budget.
For employees of the school district, VEF has launched a new donation program that makes it easier than ever to support the program. Small Change-Big Impact allows VUSD staff to make smaller donations (of $5 or $10) automatically with each pay check. It’s a simple way to make a massive impact.
To learn more about the Foundation or to contribute to student success, please visit VisaliaEdFoundation.org. VEF is also active on Facebook and Instagram. By working together, the community can ensure that every Visalia student approaches “what’s next” in their life with confidence.
Board Member Myron Sheklian shared the story of the Foundation’s beginnings with us:
The history of the Visalia Education Foundation can be traced back to May 12, 1983,when seven forward-thinking Visalians gathered at the Depot Restaurant for an organizational meeting. This group saw the need to form an educational foundation following the passage of Proposition 13 in 1978, which lowered California property taxes and shut off the major source of school revenues. This left school districts with a choice to curtail educational services or find alternative funding.
Benefiting from a $500 check from Jostens American Yearbook, the group established an account at Visalia Community Bank. At the request of: the Foundation, the local Board of Education, PTA boards, and community members, specific areas of need were identified. Some of which included: vocational education, SCICON, a community pool, cooling systems, scholarships, and music programs. All have since improved the quality of education available to the students of Visalia Unified.
In order to gather community support for the Foundation, 10,000 copies of an informational brochure were printed and donated by Jostens. From this humble beginning, the Visalia Education Foundation continues to serve over 40 years later.
