ONE WEEK at a TIME Entering last weekend, it was thought the top eight was just about set for the season and that the intrigue from now until the end of August might be those sides jockeying for the top two, the double chance and home elimination finals. Games such as Friday night’s Geelong-Western Bulldogs clash, which pits third (Cats) against second (Bulldogs), are a case in point. But then came the stunner at the SCG last Friday when 17th-placed Hawthorn upset Sydney by 38 points. At 8-5, the Swans remain in sixth place and the surprise packets of the season are still well entrenched in the eight. But their next four games – Port (away), West Coast (home), Western Bulldogs (away) and GWS (away) – become critical. Of course, whether any of the teams outside the eight are good enough to make their move remains to be seen. Fremantle is a game and 14 per cent outside the eight, with the Giants half a game further back. The Giants should be kicking themselves. They played three

deplorable quarters against North Melbourne in Hobart last Sunday, only to finally come good in the final term to settle for a draw. GWS has Carlton and Hawthorn at home in the next two weeks and must win both to give itself any chance of muscling in on the eight later in the season. Perhaps Essendon, which resumes its season on Sunday against the revitalised Hawks in Launceston, is the team to watch.
NAB AFL Rising Star RILEY THILTHORPE ADELAIDE
A
delaide key forward Riley Thilthorpe was awfully unlucky not to win a NAB AFL Rising Star nomination after kicking five goals on debut against Hawthorn in round six. Problem was that Hawk Jacob Koschitzke did the same at the other end – in a winning team. But he was not going to be denied this time around. The No. 2 selection at last year’s NAB AFL Draft booted three goals for the Crows as they came from the clouds against St Kilda in Cairns last week, kicking the last seven goals of the game to win by six points. The match-winner was a beauty – a kick over his head from the top of a congested goalsquare that just bobbled across the line with one minute remaining. The 18-year-old from West Adelaide has averaged two goals a game and 1.4 contested marks through eight games and is already a fan favourite at the Crows. ASHLEY BROWNE

hen the story of the 2021 season is written, St Kilda’s regression will serve as one of the more surprising aspects of the year that is quickly becoming one of the most open in recent memory. Last Saturday night’s loss to Adelaide in Cairns all but extinguished the Saints’ rapidly diminishing finals hopes after they squandered a 36-point lead in the wet and humid conditions up north. But it wasn’t just the result that would have disappointed Saints fans most. It was the nature of the complete disintegration – particularly in the second half – which would have worried coach Brett Ratten.
150 GAMES “That was hard to go through and especially the way we went through it,” he said post-match. “We’re just not strong enough and hard enough. You can fall away in an area, but you just don’t get beaten by minus 23 (contested possessions in the last quarter). It’s unacceptable. “(The) conditions were not about how beautiful you could kick the ball, it was how high you could roll your sleeves up. We didn’t do that.” St Kilda’s issues are threefold – injuries to key players, the stagnation of several big-name recruits and its next generation not progressing as many would have hoped. Rowan Marshall is set to return in the coming weeks, which will be a significant boost, but the Saints’ unhealthy reliance on him remains an issue. Brad Crouch picks up plenty of the footy but hasn’t damaged opponents as much has he would have liked, while Bradley Hill has performed only in patches throughout the year. There also remains considerable queries over a few of the young stars who haven’t had the seasons they would have liked. As Ratten admitted, St Kilda’s finals hopes are all but over as it

looks to pick up the pieces for the remainder of 2021. It’s hard to quantify just how far the Saints have fallen this year, but it’s perhaps summed up by the gap that’s emerged between them and the Western Bulldogs – a side they beat in an elimination final last year. The fact they have fallen below their opponents last Saturday night – and last year’s wooden spooners – is also concerning. While a Carlton-style full-scale review may not be needed, the Saints should be using the bye to try and understand the scale of what has gone wrong in the first half of their ill-fated season.

he AFLW trade period formally closed last week with 13 trades and two free agency moves completed. It was a busy period for some clubs with Carlton, Melbourne, GWS, Geelong and North Melbourne particularly active. The Blues will be licking their wounds after Tayla Harris, Chloe Dalton, Jess Hosking, Katie Loynes and Alison Downie all departed. Co-captain Loynes and Downie were asked to explore their options by the club. Carlton loses two of its best 10 players in Harris and Dalton, while Hosking’s decision to join her sister at Richmond in the dying stages of the trade period will also be felt. On the other side of those trades, Melbourne and GWS look big winners. The Demons get their hands on Harris on a one-year contract and the key forward could be the final piece of the puzzle to take them to a flag if it all comes together. Melbourne also traded for star Geelong midfielder Olivia Purcell. The 20-year-old is recovering from a torn ACL and is unlikely to make the new December start time, but will prove a valuable asset long-term. The Giants picked up Loynes to bolster their midfield and leadership, as well as Dalton who was one of the breakout midfielders of 2019.

They also brought in Jasmine Grierson from North Melbourne. Following the retirement of Sharni Norder, Collingwood needed to get busy and find a readymade ruck replacement. The Magpies did so by signing Downie from Carlton as a free agent and added depth behind her in Sabrina Frederick from Richmond. The Gold Coast Suns went through the 2021 season winless and were active in trying to improve their list, bringing in midfielder Claudia Whitfort from St Kilda and ruck Vivien Saad from the Kangaroos. The AFL handed priority picks to the Suns, Cats, Eagles, Saints and Tigers ahead of the July 27 draft, but put in the proviso that they could not trade those selections.
