Early last year, Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt visited Mount Gambier, hosting a public forum at the Main Corner and fielding questions from the floor regarding health services in the region. Limestone Coast Prostate Cancer Support Group coordinator Richard Harry was in the audience that day and flagged an ongoing concern from his group – a lack of prostate nurses in the region, providing similar support to the highly valued breast care nurses for breast cancer patients. “The vast difference in numbers of prostate nurses and breast care nurses even though the number of people diagnosed are very similar,” Mr Harry said. His query did not fall on deaf years and the Australian Government’s Prostate Cancer Nurses Program is set to expand with the Limestone Coast set to be the beneficiary of a funding injection to the program with a .5 (FTE) prostate nurse. “It is wonderful to get that appointment – it is a good start,” Mr Harry said. “It is a similar style role to a breast care nurse. It is about that

When a guy goes to his urologist and gets the cancer diagnosis he gets a heap of options available as a patient and you come back the next week and tell him what treatment you are going to do. You basically have to make your decision from a book. Having access to a prostate nurse means they can go through those different types of treatments and get a full run down of the expected outcomes. The other side of it, is when you get the diagnosis of the Big C, to have someone to talk to, to provide you with support and put you in touch with where you can get help, is absolutely magic. ” Mr Hunt said the government was investing $23 million in the program through the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia over the next three years to support existing prostate cancer nurses and place specialist nurses in more than 40 new locations, with Mount Gambier

Hospital successfully applying for a prostate nurse to service the Limestone Coast region. “Prostate cancer is estimated to be the second most common cause of cancer deaths in Australian men in 2020, with an estimated 3,152 deaths,” Minister Hunt said. “Sadly, more than 16,700 Australian men are expected to be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year. Since 2013, this program has funded the recruitment, training and placement of prostate cancer nurse in 29 locations across the country.” Prior to the latest funding announcement South Australia only had two prostate nurses for the entire State. “This is definitely a step in the right direction, there sill now be another nurse coming online in Adelaide and the .5 in the Limestone Coast and .5 position in Port Lincoln,” Mr Harry said. “I am concerned over the workload for the nurse being the only one in the region but we welcome the appointment.” Member for Barker Tony Pasin also welcomed the news with one of the newly funded positions set for his electorate. “So many Australian men and their families have had their lives turned upside down by prostate cancer, so I’m very pleased they will have the support of these specialised nurses now and into the future,” Mr Pasin said. “This funding sends a message to men with prostate cancer that they do not have to face this terrible disease alone.” Local prostate cancer patients can also find support through the Limestone Coast Prostate Cancer Support Group, which held its first

The District Council of Grant has delivered its 2020/21 budget, ensuring financial support for residents while also delivering essential services, infrastructure repairs and important major projects to improve infrastructure. The budget was approved at last week’s council meeting. Just call me Robbie Brokovich... I’ll be honest, I thought I was finished with talking about Tim Tams after last week’s article. For those who didn’t read, I have noticed that regular Tim Tams come in packs of eleven, but fancy Tim Tam varieties (Caramel, Mint, White chocolate, Bacon and Eggs etc) come in packs of only nine, generally for the same price. As if that’s not bad enough, the boutique Tim Tam varieties are actually half a gram smaller than the regular, garden variety Tim Tams. I’ll do the Maths for you: with fancy Tim Tams, you’re down two 17.8 gram Tim Tams, plus eleven Tim Tams being 0.5 grams smaller which comes to a grand total of 46.1 grams of Tim Tam. Some more generous (I mean gullible) of those reading may be thinking, “They’re not trying to rip us

Because they cost more, they put less in the packet to compensate.” I was actually prepared to give the Tim Tam bandits the benefit of the doubt myself. Then my partner Donna said something that changed the game completely. “But are the packages the same size?” When she first said it, I treated her like an idiot. “It doesn’t matter if the packages are the same size or not,” I scoffed. “The point is you’re getting two less Tim Tams!” Sometimes women just don’t get it. “Well if the packages are the same size, then they’re deliberately trying to mislead you into thinking you’re getting the same amount of Tim Tam,” she calmly replied. “Surely if there are less Tim Tams, if they’re not trying to scam you, they’ll put them in a smaller package.” Touché. She was completely right. If they’re not up to anything, the packaging for nine Tim Tams should be smaller than for eleven Tim Tams. Presumably the original Tim Tams were separated at an optimal distance

in the packaging to allow people to easily get their fingers between the biscuits in the packet and get one out. Regardless of the flavour with the new varieties, the distance between them should be the same, so the packaging should be only nine elevenths of original Tim Tams in total. We’ll ignore that 0.5 less Tim Tam which would make it slightly smaller again for the sake of keeping the Maths a little easier. This was the point where I went into full Erin Brockovich mode. Erin Brockovich is a movie which is worth a look, mainly because Julia Roberts looks pretty good in it. For anyone working in local supermarkets this week, I was the guy picking up different Tim Tams and comparing them to other packets of Tim Tams. I did a thorough investigation of the issue. And wouldn’t you believe it, Donna was right. The packages are exactly the same size, despite the fact there are a full two biscuits less! They are deliberately trying to mislead us. Troy Bell. Tony Pasin. Drop everything. The Premier and the Prime Minister need to be made aware of what’s going on

here. This is the sort of issue where you demand a royal commission. How can there be another explanation for this? It would have been easier to use the same eleven biscuit original packaging, but for whatever reason they made a decision about only putting nine biscuits per pack into the gourmet Tim Tams. We’ll give them the benefit of the doubt. But surely if they were going to have to build a nine biscuit package, they’d use the same dimensions for how much space between each biscuit and naturally end up with a smaller package. They actively made a decision to change the biscuit separation dimensions, spacing them out further, to create a pack

that looks the same size despite the massive difference in the volume of Tim Tam. As one final nail in the Tim Tam coffin, let’s think of the environmental damage of their decision to scam us like this. Unnecessarily big fancy Tim Tam package, means unnecessary use of plastic. Not only are they scamming us, but they are filling the world with plastic that will end up choking dolphins. I won’t rest until we’ve solved this catastrophic issue. By solve it I mean Arnotts emailing me at robbietansel@ gmail.com to organise sending me one of those packets of Tim Tams that never run out, so that I mysteriously forget about this issue.

2020 GRANT RECIPIENTS Padthaway Primary School/Preschool With a grant of $6000 this project will support the Padthaway community with crucial fire-fighting equipment, including an emergency water tank, fire hose and reel, building community capacity for future fire seasons.

Youth Opportunities Association (SA) Inc. $15,000 was granted to part fund the delivery of four personal leadership programs to 72 students who may be experiencing disadvantage or disengagement from Millicent High School, Allendale East Area School, Grant High School and Mount Gambier High School. This project not only builds capacity in the 72 young people who participate, but positively impacts the wider community as these young people develop the skills to create a future where challenges do not limit their success.

Foodbank South Australia Incorporated (Limestone Coast Branch) $3000 was granted to help Foodbank Limestone Coast with their pilot ‘Home Hamper Delivery Program’. With Covid-19 increasing the need for access to food relief across the region, Foodbank is adapting its distribution model to meet the changing face of hunger. This project will help Foodbank build capacity in its own distribution model and see food hampers distributed free of charge to the most vulnerable in the community.

Operation Flinders $16,500 was granted to the Operation Flinders 2020 Exercise Program, which transforms young people’s lives through their participation in a world leading, evidence-based outback intervention program. The grant will enable 10 young people from the Limestone Coast who are identified as being “at risk” to participate. This project not only builds capacity in the students who participate but has significant positive outcomes for the student’s wider communities.

The South East Junction, Mental Health Activity and Resource Centre $9500 was granted to provide a resilience training program encouraging people to grow and thrive in the face of challenges, so they can bounce back from adversity, bounce forward when there is opportunity and build purpose and strength. This timely project will help build community capacity through improved resilience whilst facing the Covid-19 pandemic.

Federal funding boosts airport upgrade

The Mount Gambier Regional Airport is one of sixty regional airports to receive a share of $41.2 million through the Federal Governments Regional Aviation Fund. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the Regional Airports Program would assist the owners of regional airports to undertake essential works, promoting aviation safety and access for regional Australians. Council will use the $85,000 in funding towards completion of security fencing around the perimeter of the airfield, in particular the newly extended runway end of the facility.

The Stand Like Stone Foundation, in partnership with OneFortyOne is delighted to announce the recipients of the 2020 OneFortyOne Community Capacity Building Grants. As a result of this year’s $50,000 funding round, more than $200,000 has now been provided to vital community projects in the Limestone Coast over the past six years. OneFortyOne Australia Executive General Manager Cameron MacDonald said OneFortyOne continued to value their longstanding partnership with Stand Like Stone that enabled them to support the Limestone Coast communities which they are a part of. “We are proud to be able to support projects that provide real and lasting impacts across the region,” Mr McDonald said. “To OneFortyOne it’s all about strengthening community spirit, supporting volunteers and fostering our vibrant region.” The OneFortyOne Community Capacity Building grant round is made possible thanks to the continued kindness and generosity of OneFortyOne who has provided $230,000 to the Limestone Coast through these grants since 2014. Stand Like Stone CEO Anne Kerr said these grants epitomise the generosity of spirit that is well and truly alive in this region.

Dedicated student picks up council scholarship Mount Gambier High School student Nicola Bowditch (pictured above) is the 2020 District Council of Grant Scholarship recipient at Mount Gambier High School. Since 2010 the District Council of Grant has been offering a $500 Academic Scholarship to all year 10 to 12 students who live within the District Council of Grant. High Schools within the Council area are sent the criteria and are responsible for the selection of the Scholarship recipient. The successful recipient demonstrates academic achievement, commitment and attitude and will have an exemplary attendance record. They adhere to the schools code of conduct and the schools vision and values; with a commitment to school activities including extra-curricular activities. The recipient also aspires to completing the South Australian Certificate of Education, and further education. Nicola is the last of the four students to be presentd with her scholarship, following on from the recipients at Grant High School, Tenison Woods College and St Martins Lutheran College.

ENTREPRENEURIAL SPECIALIST SCHOOL Mount Gambier High School is one of five Entrepreneurial Specialist Schools (ESS) in South Australia, delivering learning programs that will promote and encourage entrepreneurial mindsets in students. Opportunities are created for students to take up specific entrepreneurial experiences with programs and resources developed to help students pilot social and business ventures and form mentoring relationships with successful entrepreneurs and businesses, locally, nationally and globally. Through this status, Mount Gambier High School is positioned to offer ‘seed funding’ to new student businesses and ventures. Under the State Government’s funding for the Entrepreneurial Specialist Schools program, $25,000 will be made available to support students in taking the next steps as young entrepreneurs. The focus will be on transforming creative ideas to innovative business to enrich the regional economic ecosystem. Another fantastic initiative recently established, in a national first, Flinders University eNVIsion is now co-located on site, servicing business and industry entrepreneurs from the shared Collaborative Learning Centre. Existing Mount Gambier High School students have been involved in several different programs and opportunities designed to support the development of entrepreneurial skills and mindsets. Students in year 8 are currently working collaboratively across their HASS, Mathematics and English classes to create small pitches, detailing how they would take their own first steps as business owners through the $20 Boss program. Students are each given $20 to design a small business. Through this program students will increase their financial acumen, learn how to spot problems and opportunities, embrace challenges, uncertainty and failure as a part of the learning cycle, and persuasive communication, amongst many other skills. The program will culminate in an expo on Thursday 2 July, showcasing their learning and created businesses, with judges from across the community giving students authentic feedback on their ideas.

Mount Gambier High School is also using the development of entrepreneurial mindsets to increase student connection with the school and help build improved wellbeing. Students have been given the opportunity to take control of their learning. They have looked critically at the school, identified problems, and then designed ways to solve them. Through working and thinking entrepreneurially, students have continued to develop capabilities that will support them in lifelong learning. Mount Gambier High School continues to connect their staff and

students with the community, looking for ways to authenticate the learning in classrooms and preparing students for the real world. The Entrepreneurial Specialist Program have been exploring several exciting opportunities connecting the school with organisations and industry, locally, nationally and internationally. Large scale tree planting program underway

More than 23 million tree seedlings are being planted across the Green Triangle this winter aided by a global work effort. A hardworking team of about 150 tree planters, including a large percentage of foreign backpackers, are painstakingly planting both hardwood (blue gum) and softwood (pinus radiata) seedlings on second and third rotation holdings across the South East of South Australia and South West Victoria. Their work has been supported by dedicated nursery staff who have been tending to the seedlings, managing them over the past nine months in

readiness for planting. Through the leadership and research efforts of Tree Breeding Australia, the industry has generated superior DNA in the seedlings with chosen desired traits aimed at producing higher quality grade outturn and pulp yield. An average of 1300 of these seedlings will be planted on every hectare of land, approximately 20,000 hectares, over the coming weeks which is being aided by timely winter rainfall. Green Triangle Forest Industries Hub executive general manager Liz McKinnon said this year’s planting had involved more extensive planning than normal due to the impacts of COVID-19.

“Closed state borders and the need for planters to undertake a fortnight of isolation in South Australia have proved challenging for many planting teams this season,” she said. “Backpackers take up a considerable percentage of this workforce who return to the region year after year for the work task. Whilst some have been able to enter back into the region, many have waited patiently in anticipation of the pending work task. This workforce brings significant benefit to many of the region’s smaller communities. For example, a team have taken up residence in the Heywood Caravan Park to complete work in the local area. These 15 workers will be eating in local cafes, the hotel and supporting the local supermarket, whilst visiting key tourism spots in their off-time which generates important economic benefit for the township and broader region.” Contractor Cari Merrett, from Stephen Merrett Contracting, said their business had attracted personnel from the across the globe, including Canada, Thailand, France and Italy. Mount Gambier High School celebrated Pride Day ith the school splashed in rainbow colours erlier this month to mark Pride Month. Students and staff were encouraged to dress in rainbow and bright colours to raise awareness and show support for the LGBTQI+ community, with members of the Student Representative Council (SRC) collecting gold coin donations and selling rainbow decorated cupcakes to raise more than $200 for the locally based The Equality Project, whose primary activity is to advance the health and social welfare of LGBTIQ+ Australians. The SRC initiative wanted to support students from the LGBTQI+ community and promote the importance of creating a safe and inclusive environment. Reading program hits major milestone

A new name but it’s business as usual

COUNCIL LOOKS TO SET UP BUSINESSS NETWORK

United Way Glenelg is set to celebrate the impressive milestone of sending its 30,000th book, through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, to preschool-aged children living in the Glenelg Shire. The program, which is a shirebased initiative, started locally in 2013 and puts a new, age-appropriate book in the hands of children every month, free of charge to families. Since its inception, the program has grown exponentially due to the support of United Way Glenelg and its major partner, Portland Aluminium, Maternal and Child Health Services and local agencies working with vulnerable families assist, and encourage parents of newborns and children to enrol their children. The milestone will be celebrated virtually due to the current pandemic. Australian children’s author and illustrator Renee Treml stars with local stakeholders, including donors, partners and families in a video highlighting the achievement. The video, produced by Powerhouse Productions, provides an insight into the impact the Imagination Library has had. You can view the video at the United Way Glenelg facebook page. United Way Glenelg executive officer Nicole Carr was proud of the community’s support for early childhood literacy. “We recognise the importance of early childhood literacy and believe that investing in these skills early will help improve the future of the next generation,” Ms Carr said.

Wattle Range Council is calling for business owners and operators to register their details for a Councilwide database to support and encourage greater consultation and communication opportunities. “Whilst council officers have managed to remain in contact with many small business owners throughout the COVID-19 pandemic either directly or through the regions business associations, it has become clear that a large number of businesses are not members of local or regional organisations,” Wattle Range Council Mayor Des Noll said. “These businesses, therefore, do not necessarily have the opportunity to receive timely information and be involved in matters that affect their business,” he said. As a result, council is in the process of developing a database of business and industry within the Wattle Range region and are calling for all business owners/operators, of any size and working from any location (including homebased), to register their details at www.wattlerange.sa.gov.au/planningand-business/business-directory. “The database will remain confidential but will allow council to communicate more effectively when opportunities for assistance, training, networking events, consultation, and regional investment or development arise,” Mayor Noll said. “Council’s business update survey, developed to gather information from local business as COVID-19 restrictions are eased, will now also be extended until July 6, 2020, to encourage further participation. Whilst there has been an excellent response to the survey so far, Council is looking for more information from a wider range of businesses, to ensure projects and initiatives established in response to the situation are in the best interest of the entire business community,” he said. Method Heat the oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Add the onion and cook, stirring, for 2 minutes or until softened. Transfer to a plate. Season chicken. Cook the chicken, in 2 batches, for 1-2 minutes each side, until browned. Return onion and chicken to pan. Stir in curry paste. Add coconut cream. Bring to the boil. Simmer, uncovered, for 10 minutes, until chicken is cooked through. Stir in lime juice and coriander, if using. Serve the butter chicken with coconut flakes, broccolini, rice and extra lime slices.

Council looks to inject cash into community

The Glenelg Shire Council is committed to enhancing community wellbeing, and encourages and supports a broad range of arts and cultural events, community, sporting, adult learning, social support clubs and organisations through targeted funding programs and that’s where the Community Grants Program comes in.

The aim of the Community Grants Program is to assist community organisations and groups to undertake activities and provide facilities for the benefit of the citizens and residents of the shire region. The Glenelg Shire Council provides approximately $162,000 each year for community grants. There are two

rounds of funding each financial year, and applications are usually invited in July and February. Governor checks in on Blue Lake City The Governor of South Australia recently met with City of Mount Gambier representatives via online platform Zoom to learn about the council’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. With the Vice Regal program adjusted due to the public health situation, His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC took the opportunity to meet with Mayor Lynette Martin OAM and general manager community wellbeing Barbara Cernovskis virtually to continue keeping in touch with the South Australian community. “It was a pleasure to chat with His Excellency and share with him the work City of Mount Gambier has been undertaking to keep our community safe but also to prepare for a strong recovery as restrictions are easing,” Mayor Martin said. “He was most interested in the steps taken under the Our City, Our Response plan including rate relief, corporate volunteering to assist community organisations including Meals on Wheels, Spare Ya Change for Kids and Foodbank, establishment of the Community Development Fund, local business consultation, online program delivery and the many other initiatives Council has put in place during this challenging time.” His Excellency requested the Mayor pass on his best wishes to the residents

Keeping busy in the garden in winter Flowers to plant, pruning to be done and winter vegetables to grow - there is plenty on the to-do list in your garden, so get cracking.

So, what should you be doing and what are the best ways to get those winter jobs done. WINTER PLANT PRUNING • Rose pruning is top of the list and you have to be brave when you get those secateurs out. Leave only an open framework of three or four main stems and then spray these and the surrounding soil with lime sulfur to clean up pests and diseases. • Other plants to prune when bare

include hydrangeas, wisteria and grapes. • Early August is the best time to give gardenias their main pruning. • Cuttings of frangipanis will make instant new trees; leave them to dry for a few weeks, then pot or plant into a sandy mix, adding stakes for support. • Cut ornamental grasses almost to ground level to rejuvenate and spray lawns for bindii as soon as their ferny leaves appear.

WINTER FLOWERING PLANTS • Spring bulbs, winter-flowering natives and flowering hedges are still growing actively during winter so you need to keep these watered and fertilised for peak performance. WINTER GARDENING JOBS • Feed citrus in late July, using an all-purpose citrus fertiliser. • Keep sowing carrots, spring onions, leeks, broad beans, radishes, English spinach and peas. • If you haven’t planted asparagus and rhubarb crowns yet, don’t delay. • Strawberries can also go in now. • Start seeds of tomatoes, eggplant and capsicum on a warm windowsill, ready for planting when the soil warms. VEGETABLES TO GROW • Carrots: Grown all year round, carrots can withstand a large variety of temperatures. However, these veggies go great in those winter broths and soups. To ensure you get the best out of your carrots make sure that your soil doesn’t dry out, water regularly and keep the soil moist for the first two weeks of germination. • Broccoli: Broccoli loves to grow in a nice sunny spot, so make sure you position your growing produce where they will receive some rays of sunshine. Remember to give your veggies a good drink of water and keep the soil most. • Garlic: A great tip for growing garlic is to not water your soil until your cloves have germinated, which will occur approximately two weeks after planting. Following this, ensure you water the soil often enough so that it remains moist but not wet. • Spinach: Don’t forget to water your growing spinach regularly and feed once seedlings begin to emerge with a plant food and soil improver that feeds your crops above and below the ground by creating a balanced and sustainable growing environment for bigger, healthier crops. Depending on the type of spinach variety you’re growing, it should be ready to enjoy in six to eight weeks. HERBS TO GROW • Thyme - A groundcover that likes to

creep over the earth or spill out of a pot, thyme needs a sunny, sheltered position. Available in many varieties, including lemon, woolly, caraway and common, this herb is great to walk on. A delicious flavouring for chicken, thyme also has antiseptic and antifungal properties, and is said to counter the effects of ageing. • Rosemary - An evergreen shrub, rosemary likes hot weather and lasts a number of years, even if the soil remains dry. It makes a good hedge and will grow happily in a container — trim it into shape at the end of summer. Rosemary is the perfect complement to lamb, and its woody stems make great skewers. It can be grown from cuttings. • Parsley - One of the best herbs to begin with is parsley. You can buy it in punnets or small pots, but it’s also extremely easy and cheap to grow from seed. If you have a reasonable soil that holds moisture, just make a shallow furrow in damp soil, and sprinkle in some seeds. Alternatively, fill a punnet with potting mix and sow a few parsley seeds, then transplant when the seedlings are large enough to handle. Parsley shoots in three to four weeks, so you won’t need to wait long to see results. Hand-weed and watch out for hungry slugs or snails. Also, keep the soil moist by watering gently with a watering can with a large rose, or use a gentle setting on the hose nozzle so as not to disturb the new seedlings. Although parsley is a herb, it can also be used decoratively in the garden. It makes an attractive border plant, perfect for edging a sunny part of the ornamental garden or even the vegie patch. Parsley and basil eventually flower, seed and die down, but mint is there for the long haul. Common mint spreads through the garden via underground stems, and for this reason it is usually recommended to grow it in a pot. Mint prefers a moist patch of soil, so its spread is usually curtailed when the plant runs out of moisture. Mint also does quite well in light shade and tends to shrivel in full sun. Once you’ve conquered ordinary mint, branch out into some of the more interesting scented mints such as lemon, ginger and apple mint. Mint is fairly foolproof, but it does attract tiny caterpillars that chew the leaves, often leaving nothing more than bare stalks. Check mint regularly for these pests, particularly when you see chewed leaves and droppings. You can try to control them by squashing them or could also apply a biological control. Pinch off any damaged growth and give chewed plants a good drink of water. A dose of liquid plant food encourages new growth.

LOCAL SPORT Ten clubs looking to be part of interim football league Ten interested clubs have until this Friday to decide what form they would like an interim Limestone Coast Football League to take, in the wake of all three South East leagues Western Border, Mid South East and Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara â€“ cancelling their official 2020 competitions. The Limestone Coast Football Council met at the weekend to map out a stop gap measure, with an independently run one-off league, to still allow players the opportunity to take to the field in match conditions during 2020. â€œWe are still not quite sure what that will look like,â€? Smart said. â€œBut we are pretty confident there will be some form of competition.â€? Council chair Trevor Smart said clubs that had filed an expression of interest would receive correspondence this week outlining two options for consideration. Option one would see A Grade; B Grade (Reserves). Senior Colts (Under 17) and Junior Colts (Under 14) would be played as per a normal match day, with the second option being a stand alone A Grade competition. â€œWe realise not everyone does it (grades) the same but the basis of seniors, reserves and a couple of junior age groups is what we are looking at,â€? Smart said. The A Grade only option would also look at running multiple games at a couple of locations, in the same vein as the Limestone Coast Womenâ€™s Football League competition to add atmosphere to the games. Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara Football league clubs Bordertown, Kybybolite and Mundulla; Mid South East clubs Kalangadoo and Mt Burr and the five South Australian based clubs Millicent, West Gambier, East Gambier, South Gambier and North Gambier are believed to be the clubs most interested in being part of the region wide competition. All three football league presidents have been supportive of the opportunity being given to clubs and players who still want to play football in 2020. â€œOnce we have their responses we can make a

â€œ...we are still not quite sure what that will look like...but we are pretty confident there will be some form of competition...â€? decision, work on a program and work on the who, where and what,â€? Smart said. â€œWe will then work out some of the rules, umpires and the normal details you have to do to run a season.â€? Informal discussions have been held with the South East Football Umpires League but no details have been thrown around and what umpiring requirements will be needed will be shaped by the blueprint for the league. â€œHow many umpires we will need, using club volunteers along with the umpires and those sort of things will all have to be worked through,â€? Smart said. A tentative start date of July 18 is on the table with the normal home and away fixture of the four grade option being a nine round competition if all 10 teams take part, with a yet to be determined finals format. The July 18 start would see the final home and away match played on September 12 with the finals series to follow. The involvement of netball looks set to be determined more at club level, with serious discussions yet to have taken place at that level or with the State governing body, with the Limestone Coast Football Council hopeful netball will be a part of whatever competition football settles on. â€œWe would love to see netball involved â€“ it would really add to the atmosphere of the day,â€? Smart said.

LOCAL SPORT Mid South East football in mothballs for 2020 “I was very keen to get it going. I could see light at the end of the tunnel that something could be achieved.” That was the sentiments of Mid South East Football League president Peter Mitchell as his board reluctantly calling time on a 2020 season. The long serving administrator said he understood the majority decision taken by the nine member clubs with a number of factors influencing each club’s decision about moving forward this year. “There were so many outside influences and road blocks that kept making it more difficult for clubs,” Mitchell said. “The board would also like to acknowledge the time and effort clubs have invested into endeavouring to achieve a return to play for 2020.” The decision to officially abandon any form of 2020 competition was made last Wednesday night in a clear majority decision and, in the same vein as the neighbouring leagues – Western Border and Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara

– modified junior competitions are now being investigated as a matter of priority, while the Limestone Coast Football Council’s potential interim league is still being worked through in terms of viability for a truncated senior competition, with clubs from all three leagues having forwarded expressions on interest in the concept. “Our clubs are all really keen on playing juniors so the work they will have to do for protocols and being compliant remains,” Mitchell said. “We don’t want kids not playing their chosen sport for a year.” The meeting to come up with a blueprint for a 2020 junior competition was held on Monday and dialogue was also set to recommence with netball

association officials to perhaps incorporate junior netballers in the concept. As with other league presidents in the region, Mitchell was also supportive of the potentially independent league being set up as an interim option. “It would be good to still have some senior football played,” Mitchell said. “You might see players from clubs that aren’t going to be involved in anything that gets up look to move just for this year so they can play footy so that will eb interesting.” As with all regional leagues, Mitchell and his board had worked closely with their member clubs and SANFL Community Football, to do everything possible to get a 2020 season up and running.

“Netball pulling the pin four weeks ago didn’t help, and then we have the fishing towns, where they start fishing mid-September and of course all the other aspects of COVID-19,” Mitchell said. Fielding reserves was certainly going to be problematic for most clubs and that also factored into the final decision. Mitchell said his number one concern now is ensuring his nine member clubs survive into 2021 and he has advised clubs on just what it will take to ensure they do not permanently lose club personnel. “I went through with the clubs the need to make sure they continue to engage with their players, engage with their volunteers, engage with their sponsors, engage with their supporters, engage with their members and make sure they have got that connection,” Mitchell said. “You don’t want people to not stay in touch with their clubs and to say, ‘I didn’t really miss it’ and then drop off. I think reserves football is going to be a big concern for clubs going forward.” Mitchell admitted when the original late March shut down was enforced he had started making plans for a revamped 2020 season and he planned for a July 25 as the latest possible start date for a season with high hopes July 11 might see competition return but time beat out any of those plans. “When you look at what’s happening around the State, it is mainly the leagues close to Adelaide that are still going ahead and at this stage it is about fifty-fifty across South Australia in terms of who is going ahead and who has cancelled,” Mitchell said. He was also strongly encouraging clubs to make the most of continually relaxing restrictions to hold club social functions, Thursday night teas and those kind of social fabric events that are such a key part of any sporting club. “It is certainly interesting times ahead for all sporting clubs not just football and netball but all other sports.”

LOCAL SPORT Season over for Western Border competition The Western Border Football League and Western Border Netball Association have reluctantly taken the decision to cancel the 2020 season. Preparing for the 2020 season has been plagued with difficulties courtesy of border closures, differing State regulations, and the understandable hygiene and social distancing protocols that have been implemented to ensure a safe environment. The WBFL and WBNA have worked closely together throughout this difficult period, not only with each other but with the member clubs, in a bid to do everything possible to get a 2020 season up and running. WBFL president Michael Summers said, while they had given a deadline of July 1 for a call on the season, the time had come to make a call and that call was made at the delegates meeting held last Monday. “The clubs just needed to know,” Summers said. “The restrictions were continuing to have an impact and without the ability of all six clubs to compete on a level playing field any time soon, the board had to make a call and while we would have love to run a competition in 2020, it just wasn’t possible.” WBNA president Jo Gibbs was relieved a decision had been made while still being disappointed a netball competition would not get underway. “We had tried to stay positive and hopeful but in the end the right call was made,” Gibbs said. “We have worked closely with our clubs and the football league but the obstacles made it impossible to put together a season.” One of the priorities remains junior development and keeping those players engaged with their chosen sport and options regarding possible programs are being discussed at club, league and association level as we look to provide some form of junior program. “The junior football league is working on what that will look like this week,” Summers said. “We will be working with our clubs over the next week to see what a junior competition

might look like,” Gibbs said. “Many of our clubs have already committed to training or some form of junior development program regardless of what happens going forward but we will work through the options and follow the lead of our clubs as to what 2020 for our juniors might look like.” The decision to abandon the 2020 season revolved around the long term viability of the clubs and the competition, as well as maintaining the integrity of the competition, which the shortened season threatened to devalue. The WBFL and WBNA were also mindful of respecting the start of summer sports and not encroaching on their seasons. “We had worked with the likes of cricket all the way along but drifting into October was also problematic for other reasons and in the end we basically ran out of time no matter now unfortunate the cancellation of a season is,” Summers said. “Many of our best junior netballers are basketballers and their representative season starts in earnest in October and we have plenty of players who play tennis as well so it was

always going to be difficult to coordinate the seasons,” Gibbs said. The Limestone Coast Football Council and SANFL Community Football are investigating a potential interim league with the clubs still keen to pursue some form of competition in 2020. Once the details of that proposed competition, which could involve football and netball clubs from all three Limestone Coast leagues and associations – Western Border, Mid South East and Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara – are detailed, any football or netball for 2020 will be unveiled. The WBFL and WBNA would like to thank their players, officials, volunteers, sponsors and supporters for their time and patience over the

past few months. Planning has already begun for 2021 when the Western Border competition looks to emerge as strong as ever. A new look Mount Gambier Netball Association season kicks off this Friday night with a Junior 10s competition, with the remaining divisions set to play out on Saturdays. While all clubs will not compete in the COVID-19 affected 2020 season, the association was still committed to providing some form of competition for players who still

wished to be involved. President Yvette Holmes said teams had been training for the past few weeks and were looking forward to a competition resuming. “We were pleased to be able to offer a ‘stand-alone’ competition for 2020,” she said. “While not all clubs are involved it will look a lot different. Grades will be replaced with divisions, with only one division being played

The Lower South East Hockey Association (LSEHA) is yet to plot a return to play date but teams will be ready with players having been allowed back at training for a month. The association executive worked overtime to set training up and running and are continuing to devise a 2020 season. “Behind the scenes, the executive team worked really hard on a Return to Training plan that was based on the AIS Guidelines as well as the advice and direction we received from Hockey SA,” president Lochie Nisbet said. “The executive submitted a set of guidelines and FAQs to Hockey SA for endorsement and were approved for the association and the clubs can move forward

with a safe and well-managed return to training program.” The next challenge is a 2020 revised competition which the association is hoping to be able to put together and release sooner rather than later. “The work done behind the scenes over the past couple of months or so for an adjusted 2020 competition will mean the LSEHA can quickly get the games up and running when restrictions ease and competition is viable,” Nisbet said. “It’s really a case of all the clubs revisiting how their members feel about playing in 2020 and what the teams might look like. We will work with that information in the knowledge that 2020 will be very different from our usual structure. Ultimately we all just want to see new and returning players to dust off their sticks and come back out to the BLSP where they will be most welcome and encouraged to join in and enjoy the game of hockey.” The LSEHA was hoping the 2020 competition to return some time next month.

Hot on the heels of the Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara Football League calling time on a 2020 season, the Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara Netball Association has followed suit, with both now focussing on a potential junior competition. KNTNA president Georgia Cadzow said the majority of the netball clubs supported the football decision and clubs reluctantly made the call to abandon the 2020 competition. “We had held on for as long as we could but there were just so many obstacles,” Cadzow said. “We will certainly look at options for juniors and work with the clubs if that is what they want to do but in line with the football decision, it just wasn’t viable or practical to run a 2020 season.” Some KNT clubs may choose to align with their football clubs if they choose to take part in the touted interim Limestone Coast League being investigated across all three Limestone Coast based leagues and associations – Western Border, Mid South East and Kowree Naracoorte Tataira – but details are yet to be nutted out or confirmed.
