PROGRAM LAUNCH TO FUND THOUSANDS OF MEALS Almost 15,000 meals – that is what the epic fundraising effort at the weekend’s Spare Ya Change 4 Kids official launch will finance. More than $13,000 was raised, with almost $7000 of that in tips alone thanks to the dedicated celebrities who worked in one hour shifts to clear tables, run meals and drinks, and even whip up the coffee orders, which is where Member for Barker Tony Pasin came into his own, owning the coffee machine for his hour shift. It was his shift, in combination with Di Ind, that yielded the most tips as the
community flooded into Metro Bakery & Café to support the program that feeds local school children – not just at school but with take home meals as well. Spare Ya Change 4 Kids sprouted in 2017 when Don Pratt hosted a Christmas Party in Melaleuca Reserve, having raised money for gifts for the children, and has continued to develop from there, moving from providing breakfast for students to providing the take home meals, hot or cold. The concept, in fact, was really born 30 years ago when one compassionate parent did his bit to ensure kids weren’t going hungry at school. That parent was Don’s dad John Pratt and his quiet work, which son Don only became aware of in more recent years, inspired Don to take that concept and run with it. What started with John dropping off boxes of cereal and tins of milo weekly three decades ago, never telling a soul what he was up to, has brought us to the launch of Spare Ya Change 4 Kids, a program committed to feeding local school children. To this point, the funding model has been providing lockable tubs for hotels and other hospitality outlets in town to get involved, by offering up their recyclable cans and bottles, once a month or whatever frequency they are comfortable with and 3000 meals later the program is looking to hopefully take off and continue to expand. Saturday’s launch has certainly raised awareness and that was the main aim,
along with building a kitty to fund the program, while the Spare Ya Change 4 Kids founders put a board in place, with expressions of interest set to be called in the New Year, work on a strategic plan, as well as working side by side with the Mount Gambier City Council on a streamlined collection service for the bottles and cans, which will give the program ongoing income. The launch also showed there is a ready and willing volunteer base for the program as it looks to continually expand, with individuals and community groups offering their services from cooking to doing dishes. “The launch did the job we wanted it to,” Don said. “We owe a huge debt of gratitude to everyone who made the day possible and ended their skills to ensure it went off without a hitch.” That included the late call up of MC Jason
Scheidl, after the original MC had a family health issue with which to deal. “For the next three days we also walked around with the t-shirts on and people we don’t even know are now coming up and talking to us about it,” Don said. Metro’s business neighbours, Royal Copenhagen and Lima & Co have both also jumped on board with Copenhagen designing a fantasy icecream for the cause and donating the proceeds and Lima & Co running a raffle. HARD WORKING HOLLY TOPS GRANT HIGH SCHOOL “I was really, really nervous and I didn’t sleep well the two nights before the results came out.” Certainly not an uncommon feeling for the raft of students across the Limestone Coast as December 17 – the release date of their Year 12 results – approached. It was certainly how Grant High School student Holly Baldock felt but with an ATAR of 97.85, Holly was able to
breath a well-earned sight of relief. For Holly, Year 12 was a year where she focussed on staying on top of her workload from the first lesson to the last exam. “I did all my assignments as soon as I got them and handed them up early,” she said. Maths Methods, English Literature, Chemistry, Physics and Specialist Maths were Holly’s five subjects and she completed the compulsory research project in Year 11 – a research project that did somewhat reflect where Holly believes her future lies. “I looked at the benefits of vaccinations to see if they outweigh the risks and basically tried to argue each side,” she said. And it is a future in medical research that Holly is chasing, applying for a Bachelor of Science Advanced with a Major in Chemistry and going on to complete Honours. “I really am looking to get into research,” Holly said. “The course has a lot of genetic engineering, stem cell and cancer research and I think I would like
to get into the research area someday.” And while immersing herself in her work was Holly’s way of navigating through Year 12, she did still maintain her part time job, played social sport and allocated Sunday afternoons for a catch up with friends and when she checked her results at 7.20am on December 17 it was all worth it. The school had 10 students top the 90 mark, with principal Fleur Roachock proud of the efforts of all the school’s graduates. “For many of our students, the ATAR is not the main game in their studies,” she said. “We congratulate those who have achieved their SACE and already moved into apprenticeships, traineeships and paid work. We pride ourselves on building future-ready citizens who can be successful in all walks of life – and none of them should ever feel defined by a number. A big thanks to our amazing staff who supported students in these achievements.”

AGAINST ALL ODDS To understand what 19 year old St Martins Lutheran College student Sally Bond has achieved you have to trace her journey back to life as a Year 9 student. The elite equestrian had a serious fall and broke her leg but it was the resulting surgery complications that saw her diagnosed with complex regional pain syndrome that saw the dedicated academic, who already dreamed of a career in law, and her future plans thrown into disarray. “After the fall I missed the rest of Year 9 and all of Year 10,” Sally said. Bed ridden and on high doses of pain relief, Sally was also facing the real prospect of never walking again and also never being able to return to school. “I didn’t walk for 18 months,” Sally said. “But I was so determined to prove everyone wrong. I was always an academic student and had big plans for my future and I wasn’t ready to give up on that.” So when what would have been Year 11 for Sally came around, she stepped back into life with her former classmates but since her return things have been far from simple, including her completion of SACE, which she tackled over two years, finishing up this year. For a student who had consistently made good grades and excelled in the sciences, her 18 month absence from classes meant she had to change her selected subjects. “But I was so determined to prove everyone wrong. I was always an academic student and had big plans for my future and I wasn’t ready to give up on that.”
“Because I didn’t have the grounding I needed I wouldn’t do chemistry or physics or advanced maths, it was just going to be too hard to try and make up that ground,” Sally said.
“I realised it meant I had not done as well in my exams as I hoped but when I saw my ATAR (97.6) I was over the moon.”
On her return to school she attended one lesson a week of English, with her classmates accessing five formal lessons a week, and completed her studies online, which was also her modus operandi for legal studies as well. “As my condition improved I was able to attend school more frequently,” Sally said. But even in Year 12 she could not attend a full load of lessons, attending around three of the five lessons each week for her chosen subjects, which also included general maths, biology and the research project. It was her research project that handed her a merit as she delved into the whys and wherefores of her debilitating condition – complex regional pain syndrome. “It is a very confusing condition and I just wanted to know more about it,” Sally said. “It did give me a bit more self satisfaction to be working on something that was such a part of my life and learning about why it was occurring.” With her goal still firmly set on a career in law, Sally knew she required
an ATAR of 95. “I knew I had to reach for top grades and so I worked consistently hard throughout the year,” Sally said. “I was so used to self directed learning but I was always trying to stay ahead. I knew I had to keep my internal school grades at that A+ level.” But no matter how hard you’ve worked, there is still that anxiety when it comes to logging on and finding out those results. “The first thing that comes up is your individual grades and they had dropped to an A so I was a bit shocked and worried about what was happening,” Sally said. “I realised it meant I had not done as well in my exams as I hoped but when I saw my ATAR (97.6) I was over the moon.” So Sally is now set for a gap year as a receptionist at her parent’s chiropractic business and will then head to Flinders University in 2021 to commence her double degree of a Bachelor of Law and Legal Practices with Honours and a Bachelor of Accounting. “Since I was very young I wanted to be a lawyer,” Sally said. “But I also love numbers and so I am hoping to
work in law with a focus on finance and banking.” Sally’s ATAR of 97.6 saw her top the St Martins Lutheran College standings, which can also boast to have 25% of the Class of 2019 scoring in the top 20% of the state, in what was a pleasing result for the school and its principal Alan Connah. “We are delighted with the results for all of our students,” he said. “They have worked hard and have achieved excellent results in line with their abilities. We congratulate those who achieved excellent scores as well as the significant number of students who successfully undertook vocational qualifications over the course of the year. We are proud of what Sally Bond has been able to achieve today and throughout the course of the year. Her tenacity, hard work and dedication to her schooling makes her very deserving of this score. We congratulate her on an excellent result given what she has overcome in the face of adversity.” Head of Secondary Damian Bradley saw also thrilled to see students
working their way through different pathways, including vocational courses. “Our students all have individual pathways they have been working through and towards over their secondary schooling,” Mr Bradley said. “University is not the endpoint that every student is working towards, nor should it be. We have definitely got some students who will be very excited about their ATAR’s, but equally students who have worked hard through vocational qualifications over their senior schooling years that will serve them well post school. We are proud of the achievements of all of our students. We hope they have received a result that reflects the effort they put into their year, and that will allow them to continue exploring the career pathways that interest them into the future.” ST MARTINS LUTHERAN COLLEGE TOP STUDENTS Sally Bond: 97.6 Cayla Willsmore: 88.85 Jade Delaney: 88.5 Charlotte Smith: 87.7 Below - St Martins Lutheran College principal Alan Connah (far right) with the school’s top students (from left) - Charlotte Smith, Jade Delaney, Cayla Willsmore & Sally Bond.

POPULAR BAKERY PRESENTS EXCITING OPPORTUNITY FOR MOUNT GAMBIER LOCALS Tree changers and budding local business owners are set to jump at the chance to purchase one of the region’s long standing and best known local businesses. After eight successful years, Bakers Delight Mount Gambier – Commercial Street is seeking new owners, presenting a rare opportunity to take over one of the region’s most well-established businesses. With dedicated staff and a loyal customer base, Bakers Delight Mount Gambier presents an exciting opportunity to those craving to break free from the nine to five grind. Mount Gambier offers the perfect blend of thriving city and strong sense of community and with Bakers Delight’s 40th anniversary next year, there has never been a more exciting time to join Australia’s largest bakery franchise. Andrew did eight years ago, and he has never looked back. Andrew started at Bakers Delight in 2002 when he was just 14 years old as an apprentice baker. Nine years later, he took the plunge and purchased his own bakery. For the past eight years, Andrew has been running a successful business where he has enjoyed watching his staff and community grow. All while creating the ideal work/life balance that has allowed him to pursue other passions, such as obtaining his private pilot licence.
Mt Gambier’s
Looking at bakeries to purchase, from South Australia to Queensland, Andrew landed on Bakers Delight Mount Gambier. Not only did Andrew love the bakery site, which is the largest Bakers Delight to be built at 195sqm, but he was welcomed to the Bakers Delight network with open arms and lots of support. “Starting a business on my own meant I needed all the help I could get, and Bakers Delight was always there to answer my questions and guide me in the right direction. I was a baker, not a businessman, so the support I received from Bakers Delight in regards to marketing, social media and business management was paramount to my success,” said Andrew. “Although I already worked for Bakers Delight, I made sure I researched other business opportunities before finally deciding on Bakers Delight. One of the advantages to Bakers Delight was the large network of Franchisees you can talk with to draw on their experience. From the previous Franchisee to the support office staff, there was a small army of talented people wanting me to succeed, helping me every step of the way.” Running a small business in the tight-knit town of Mount Gambier has allowed Andrew to develop strong relationships with locals as well as support many local clubs, schools and charities. “One of my greatest achievements as a Franchisee has been giving back to the community I was born and raised. Not only do I work closely with local community groups but I get to know my staff and watch them grow and develop in their careers, whether it be in the bakery or a completely different field.” “I feel so lucky to have been able to run my own business in my hometown and I will cherish the lifelong friendships I have made with customers and employees. I have thoroughly enjoyed my journey with Bakers Delight and it is bitter sweet to be handing the business over after almost 10 years.” Bakers Delight Mount Gambier is priced to sell with hopes the new owners can put their stamp on the business, making it their own. For more information about this business opportunity, please contact the Bakers Delight Franchise Recruitment team on 1300 309 759 or visit https://www.bakersdelight.com.au/ franchise/

WELCOME TO ‘LALOMA’ This cottage front family home has not only been extensively renovated, but also extended with efficiency and design taken into consideration. You’ll appreciate this home and the space that’s on offer with a 1014m2 allotment and the home now totalling 220m2 of modern living. The original cottage offers the forever popular solid living, high ceilings, entry hallway and boasts 4 bedrooms, you have the flexibility to decide how you use them! Original timber flooring has been restored throughout the cottage while the master bedroom has been carpeted for warmth, offers a comfortable walk in robe, modern ensuite with under floor heating plus a private courtyard to relax and enjoy your coffee while reading the paper on a Sunday morning. Main bathroom is centrally located for convenience and provides the modern elements again including under floor heating, spacious shower, bath and toilet. Well-appointed kitchen with Caesar stone benchtops, 5 burner gas cook-top, an abundance of storage and drawer space, dishwasher, all while being spoilt with the addition of a walk through butler pantry offering additional storage and bench space…. Just in case you need more! Moving through to the large open plan living and dining space which sets the ambience with wood log fire heating plus large windows which have been designed to allow the natural sunlight to heat the polished concrete floor to then hold and release heat when warranted. Another efficient element to appreciate. Large stacker doors allow the large extended living space to open out onto an undercover deck area for entertaining while overlooking the spacious and low maintenance yard. A separate fenced area at the end of the yard has established fruit trees and a vegetable patch – Something you can further develop if you wish, the space is certainly there!

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - IT’S A CAT-ASTROPHE… By ROBBIE TANSE Must have been a slow news day in Adelaide on December 13th. I read with interest in The Advertiser about a metropolitan firefighter who was given poor marks on a test that would have allowed him to progress to the position of station manager. So what sort of a test would you give a firefighter to decide if they were worthy of progressing in their career? Maybe examine the records of how they have performed in their role of fighting fires and dealing with emergencies up until that point? Talk to some of their colleagues to get their views? Put them through a training exercise where they have to fight a particularly challenging fire? Good answers, but you obviously don’t understand what the role of a firefighter involves. Obviously you would give them a scenario where they had to rescue an imaginary cat from a tree. Duh! Now I’m sure the process for progressing to station manager involved more than the cat scenario, but the fact that it’s in the process at all concerns me. According to the paper, the firefighter appealed the decision and particularly highlighted the poor marks he received on the imaginary cat rescue simulation.
My first question would be, is rescuing cats from trees a key part of the job of being a firefighter? I’d like to think that the answer to that question is no. I’d like to think that the key part of a firefighter’s job is fighting fires. Surely rescuing cats from a tree is a firefighter cliché perpetuated by Hollywood movies and TV shows. It’d be like arriving for your interview as a teacher and being asked to yell at some imaginary children. Arriving at your job interview to become a police officer and being asked to demonstrate your donut eating technique. Arriving at your job interview to become a porn star and being asked to do an impression of a pool cleaner. Clichés! There are so many different scenarios in porn these days… so I’ve heard. I’m no expert, but I suspect that if I rang triple zero with an emergency that involved my cat being stuck up a tree they’d hang up on me. I HOPE they’d hang up on me. That is not an emergency that involves the fire department. The only emergency services that should be sent to my house in that instance, is the police, to shoot me for clogging up the 000 line with frivolous problems. So I sympathise with the firefighter in this case. Having said that, I’m not convinced that his handling of the invisible cat scenario was well handled. He did call for a combination aerial pumping appliance. Again, I’m quite ignorant of firefighting trucks, but I’m assuming that’s a truck with a
reasonably long extending ladder that he was then planning to use to reach the cat. Seems like a bit of overkill to me. If he was going to try to solve the scenario, not just tell the people administering the test that they were being ridiculous, better solutions would have included… Cut the tree down. I’m assuming that they would have had axes on the truck (or is that another firefighter cliché?) Problem solved. Cat out of tree, plus the bonus of some firewood for next Winter.
Option two. Hook up fire hose to hydrant. Squirt cat out of tree. Cat out of tree plus the bonus of the tree and nearby garden getting a good watering during this hot summer. Notice how both of my solutions solve the cat issue plus come with a lovely added bonus. Maybe I should consider becoming a firefighter. Another possibility. Very similar to the second one. Find assorted items and throw them at the cat. As we know, cats always land on their feet, plus they have nine lives. Problem solved. Cat

out of tree. No bonus with this one, although you could give a lovely prize like a chocolate frog to the person who knocks the cat out of the tree. Possibly my favourite solution. Send a dog into the tree. Dogs chase cats (or is that another Hollywood cliché?) Dog chases cat out of tree. Problem solved. The only possible issue with this could be if the dog gets stuck in the tree when he realises how high up he is. The obvious solution to this is to send a goat into the tree. Goats eat anything and that would most likely get the dog moving. “But what if the goat then gets stuck in the tree?” you say. I think we would then send a cow into the tree. Kind of a long shot, because cows aren’t overly aggressive, but quite possibly the goat would simply feel uncomfortable with the cow taking up so much of the room in the canopy and climb down. I don’t know why, she swallowed a fly; perhaps she’ll die. Anyway, I hope that all of our firefighters and emergency service workers have a quiet, rest-filled holiday, and that the biggest emergency they do encounter is a cat stuck up a tree. Behave and stay safe folks. I also hope for a relaxing Christmas for all of those who bother to read my rants each week. JUST LIKE WINNING THE LOTTERY
One woman’s look at the lighter side of kids, life and growing up! Dad always said if you wanted something bad enough to stop at nothing and go out and get it. Do you think he was talking about a Miss Piggy doll? There’s a small little incident from my younger years that I may not be 100% proud of, but let’s remember, there was a toy at stake! I confessed my little tryst a couple of years ago to my sister when out at a busy restaurant and in the company of one of my friends. I thought people weren’t meant to yell under those circumstances! I’ll set the scene. I was about 10 years old and had yet to commence full time employment so was living off my $2 a week allowance. I’d seen the Miss Piggy Doll and I wanted it, so I sat down and thought long and hard about how I could raise the much needed cash. Car washing, cleaning, part time job - it all seemed a little too involved. Just when it seemed like piggy was a distant pipedream I had the brainwave to innocently scour the house and look for any abandoned money that was lying around - whether it be in dad’s trouser pocket, mum’s purse, my sister’s Hobitz netball bag or my brother’s money jar. And wouldn’t you know it, I seemed to accumulate quite a stash - $16 in fact (coincidentally, exactly what I needed for piggy).
Eighteen year old Chloe Futcher equates her impressive ATAR of 99.35 as tantamount to winning the lottery. “The night before the results came out I said to mum imagine if I got 99 and I said it just like you would say to someone, imagine if we won the lottery. Not ever thinking you would,” Chloe said. Students at Tenison Woods College, where Chloe has been named the 2019 Dux, received a predicted ATAR during the year and Chloe’s was 95.65 so when she saw two merits and the 99.35, the celebrations were swift and loud. “I checked the results with my mum and we got pretty excited and were carrying on so it didn’t take dad long to some in and see what all the fuss was about. I don’t think anyone ever expects that sort of result. You can expect to do quite well and you can know you have worked hard and your school grades are good but to end up in the top one per cent of the State had never crossed my mind.” Chloe started her research project in Year 11 and also completed her Stage 2 Biology that same year, before tackling English, Maths Methods, Chemistry, Religion and Psychology in 2019. Chloe is looking to secure a place studying medicine but if that does not eventuate in the 2020 offers, she will take a place in a health sciences course with the sole aimof crossing over to medicine eventually. “It was when I got to high school and doing more science subjects which I really started to enjoy that I thought maybe I good at this and maybe it can become a career,” Chloe said. “Through primary school I never really thought about it but in Year 8 I had Mr Gilham as my science teacher and he managed to change my mind. He was really encouraging and the way he reacted to our achievements made us feel valued in his class.” Receiving a merit for biology when she completed it in Year 11 only cemented Chloe’s preferred career path in her mind.
“I would spend extra time on those subjects at home – not because I had to but because I enjoyed them so much,” she said. “I looked at a lot of careers that are centred around biology – human biology and plant biology – and I thought about what I wanted out of a career and that was to help people and make a difference.” Some work experience in the medical field again confirmed Chloe’s ambitions and with her eyes firmly set on the prize there will be no gap year for the region’s top student but rather she will head straight to university. “I have decided with six or seven years of study ahead of me I am going to push on,” she said. While the first round of university offers came out at the end of last week, the medicine course Chloe has targeted does not hand out offers until January next year so another nervous wait ensues. Chloe will have her part time work to help fill her days and nights, a job she maintained during Year 12, knowing that she needed to save plenty of money if she was going to forgo the gap year option. “I knew something would have to give in Year 12 if I was going to get the grades I wanted so it was netball,” Chloe said. “I went from playing social a couple of times a week and training and playing at the weekend to nothing but I didn’t really miss it as much as my friends thought I would. I think that’s because I am a pretty academic person.” An academic person, who, for the most part, worked steadily through the year to stay on top of her workload. “Sometimes there were things I had to do at the last minute but that was basically because you would just be doing content based work for about three weeks and then every class would have an assignment due at the same time.” Chloe was one of 18 Tenison Woods College students to achieved
After my haul I had to explain to mum where it had come from. So I put all the cash in my back pocket, went into the kitchen, and with a look of shock and amazement, said “wow look at what I just found in my back pocket.” Ingenious plan - and it worked, no questions asked.
an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) greater than 90. She also was one of 25 students Statewide honoured with a Governor of South Australia Commendation, which recognises overall excellence in achieving the SACE. In addition to the 18 students receiving an ATAR above 90, a further 19 students gained an ATAR of greater than 80, totaling 37 students with 80 and above for the College. Other outstanding results rounding out the top five ATAR scores for Tenison Woods College students include Joshua Edwards with 98.90, Brock Stevens with 97.70, Keely Jones with 96.85 and Luke Janssen with 96.05. Tenison Woods College principal David Mezinec was extremely proud of the 2019 Year 12 cohort who have achieved solid final grades. “The class of 2019 have worked solidly throughout the year and their results reflect their consistent hard work and application to their goals,” Mr Mezinec said. “I am also delighted that these Year 12 students also played a significant role in building and leading our College community and were wonderfully well-rounded young people who left a significant impression on our school and local community. If students didn’t receive the results they were expecting it is important that
they do not become too disheartened and remember that the tertiary and higher education learning environment enables multiple entry points, articulations and pathways to achieve a final qualification goal. If students are entering the workforce it is important to remember that SACE results are only one predictor of potential success. The significant currencies in the world of work remain attitude, presence and attention to the task, teamwork and loyalty to the organisation; all of which can be attained with a deliberate approach despite the level of academic achievement.” TENISON WOODS COLLEGE RESULTS Four Merit certificates were awarded to three Tenison Woods College students: • Chloe Futcher – Research Project & English • Keely Jones – English • Shayla Jones – English Four Tenison Woods College students attained straight A’s in their subjects: • Chloe Futcher • Keely Jones • Matthew Dell’ Antonio • Lara MacGregor Four Tenison Woods College Year 11 students completed at least one SACE Stage 2 subject with impressive results: • Amelie Beltakis A- in Mathematical Methods & Modern History • Ethan Herpich A- in English Literary Studies • Chloe Mackenzie A in Biology • Sophia Weston A- in Society and Culture TENISON WOODS COLLEGE - TOP ATAR RESULTS (ALL OVER 90) Chloe Futcher; Joshua Edwards; Brock Stevens; Keely Jones; Luke Janssen; Lara MacGregor; Lily Bannister; Laura Cesario; Jocelyn Patzel; Shayla Jones; Matthew Dell’ Antonio; Bailey Musci; James Lucas; Clare Davey; Olivia Patzel; Georgia Duncan; Lara Willoughby & Laura McIntyre Above - Tenison Woods College dux Chloe Futcher.
Now while I see this whole event as a funny little life experience, strangely enough my sister doesn’t quite see the humorous side. I can’t work out if she’s mad because I took her $1.75 or if she secretly yearned for her own Miss Piggy doll. I’m thinking the latter.

Recently one of Lioness Club of Mount Gambier families had the need to stay in Adelaide at the Cancer Council SA’s Flinders Lodge. This is the accommodation facility is used by country patients from all over South Australia when someone in their family is undergoing treatment for cancer. Patients and their families are charged a very small fee and all so grateful for this wonderful facility. It came to the club’s notice that of the 66 units at this facility, there were only 12 units with microwaves. Although there is a wonderfully equipped kitchen, it is difficult for ill patients without carers to access when feeling extremely fatigued or ill. The Lioness Club of Mount Gambier decided to donate $1000 in purchased microwaves to this facility. After getting numerous quotes, Peter Roulstone at Harvey Norman Mt. Gambier gave the club a very generous price and it was able to purchase 10 Sharp 750w microwaves. Peter also arranged free delivery to Flinders Lodge. The members of the Mount Gambier Lioness Club are very grateful to our local Harvey Norman store for this purchase,” Lioness Jan Shelton said. CLAIRE FINDS JUST THE RIGHT BALANCE Mount Gambier High School’s top student Claire Day has her two older sisters, Maddie and Laura, to thank for playing some small part in her impressive ATAR (97.3). Maddie showed her the importance of balance and not just hitting the books every chance you get but still catching up with friends and maintaining some outside activities. Laura showed her the importance of being organised and dedicated to your studies to get the best results. Laura was also Mount Gambier High School dux when she completed Year 12. “I think I fell nicely in the middle and it was good to watch them both go through it and take the best bits of each to come up with the best way for me to get through Year 12,” Claire said. Unlike many of her fellow students, Claire was not too anxious about the unveiling of her ATAR. “I didn’t get too stressed about it although I would have been disappointed if it was low,” Claire said. “I found I sort of worked in spurts. When I was in the zone, I would work really hard, and then sometimes I would just put things off. I found it hard to be consistent but it always got done. I actually found it to be a really
fun year and I always had a lot on but I seemed to find a balance.” Claire was one of those students who opted to keep juggling everything she had been involved in before she entered Year 12. “Work, sport, catching up with friends – I never gave up any of those things,” she said. “I honestly don’t think I would have done as well if I had given things up.” Claire completed Maths, English, Psychology, Child Studies and the Research Project and advises students not to put themselves under pressure by taking on subjects they don’t love or don’t have to for their future path but to keep it as simple as possible. “I would have loved to study business of accounting but that wasn’t an option,” Claire said. But that sector is her future and she is hoping, after her gap year, to study online, or else she might head to Adelaide. Work is on her agenda now and she is more than ready to get back into a routine. “After basically eight weeks of not having to really do anything I am excited about getting back into things.” Claire, who picked up Merit Awards in General Maths and English, was part of the school’s almost 92 per cent
completion rate – an increase from 2018. “This reflects a commitment by staff to support students through the rigours of the year and an ongoing tradition of Mount Gambier High School students to perform at or above state achievement rates,” Mount Gambier High School senior school assistant principal Samantha Brown said MOUNT GAMBIER HIGH SCHOOL’S TOP FIVE STUDENTS Claire Day; Sharni McDonald; Sophie Charlton; Jordan Hutchins & Kaylee Whitehead

PIONEERS SIGNINGS The Castec Rural Supplies Mount Gambier Pioneers Men’s program are excited to announce the addition of two young Adelaide tyro’s to our group. Tom Kubank and Nik DeSantis, formally of West Adelaide and Sturt respectively have committed to move to Mount Gambier for the upcoming NBL1 season. Both are coming off impressive Premier League seasons where they competed against the Pioneers. Tom a tall (6’7) wing averaged 16.5 points and 6.3 rebounds after returning to the Bearcats from US College team Mary where he spent three years. An extremely athletic and aggressive player. Nik a 6’4 guard is coming off a breakout season for the Sturt Sabres where he averaged 12.5 points 2.9 rebounds and 2 assists in just 23 minutes of action. Nik made 36 of his 70 three point attempts, an impressive 51.4%. Head coach Richard Hill said the men’s roster is taking shape with the core of last season’s team returning together with these additions. “We hope to have a couple more key signings to round out our roster prior to Christmas and our first camp for 2020 on Jan 3, 4 and 5.

SAFFIN TAKES CHARGE AT SOUTH It must be baseball season because the sporting gods have recently thrown South Gambier Football Club a curve ball. As pre-season started in earnest, the Demons were dealt a blow with the departure of senior coach Brett Exelby to Adelaide with family commitments and work opportunities seeing his family move to the State capital. That left South Gambier a ship without a captain and club officials, headed by president Wayne Glynn, have been working overtime to find a solution. “Anytime you lose the main leader of an organisation it throws a spanner in the works, Glynn said. “Our priority was to provide some certainty and clear direction going forward. Of course, Exelby’s shoes would not be easy to fill. “We thought Brett had established a very strong base with the juniors that we have played over the past couple of years and we had signed most of the players from 2019 for next season and we believe we have the makings of a strong group for 2020, Glynn said. Some external options were investigated, with the club safe in the knowledge there were strong internal candidates and reigning club best & fairest and assistant coach Bronson Saffin (pictured right) is set to take the reins. “Bronson is experienced and has a lot of knowledge and has had a couple of years under Brett Exelby and is a very good candidate, Glynn said. “I think we had a fantastic season and he knows the group really well. We wanted as seamless as possible transition and at this late stage it would have been a harder process (for an outside candidate) to get to know everyone before next year so we were happy to have such a strong candidate internally – Bronson is an excellent candidate.
SPORT CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS CROWNED
At each monthly sporting clay shoot held at Burrungule Park, the Gambier Shooting Suppliers High Gun winner goes onto compete in the end of Year Champion of Champions shoot off. At the recent Christmas shoot nine shooters lined up to tackle some tough targets set by Ken Atkin and his crew from the South East Branch of the South Australian Field & Game Association. A six stand Compak was set up to test the nine shooters and positions were drawn at random. A good sized crowd turned out for the early start. The experienced Ron Rhook from western Victoria dug deep and kept a cool head under pressure to drop only one target from the 24 on offer to take out the trophy sponsored by Elders Gambier Farm Supplies, hot on his heels, only one target behind was Gavin Dyson. Last year’s winner Jamie Dunn and pre event favourite Jeremy Kent were a little off the pace and dropped out of contention. TWO BIG NIGHTS FOR THE BORDERLINE SPEEDWAY A couple of busy weeks for the Borderline Speedway with the running of the World Series Sprintcars on December 28, followed by the 70th running of the SA Speedcar Title on January 4. Come December 28, organisers expect around 50 sprintcars to hit the track, with a similar number of Formula 500 drivers set to be part of the support program. Local Steph Munn will be part of the Formula 500 action, while the other local connections on the night include long time visitor and WSS icon Brooke Tatnell, who takes the drive in V55, Ray Scott’s car. Tatnell holds the record for the most number of A-Main wins in the 30-plus years of World Series Sprintcars, with 77, and he is a nine time champion of the World Series Sprintcars, most recently in in 2014/15, and he has been on the podium plenty of other times as well in the series’ 32 year history. Having shown promising speed in the six events contested last season, the combination of Tatnell, Ashley Scott and the Scott Motorsport team will be looking to hit the ground running in 2019/20, as Tatnell chases a 10th World Series Sprintcar title to cap off his illustrious career. Reigning WSS champion Steve Lines and contracted WSS driver Glen Sutherland also add a strong local flavour to the meeting. Lines is a dual WSS champion and Sutherland is one of the roadshow’s most popular drivers, taking on the 2019/20 season under the guise of new crew chief Matt Griffiths. Sutherland has already hit the ground running in 2019/20, finishing ninth overall in the hotly contested Chariots of Thunder series in Darwin and he is clearly gunning for an outright Top 10 in World Series Sprintcars – a feat he last achieved in 2017/18. The January 6 meeting is jam packed and also boasts plenty to hold the interest of fans looking to cheer on local connections. While the feature event is the 70th SA Speedcar Title, the Wingless Sprints Summerslam Round 2 will see two locals set to shine with both Mitchell Broome and Kirby Hillyer currently sitting one and two in the Victorian series. “Of course there will be 40 other drivers trying to beat them on their home track,” Borderline Speedway president Cary Jennings said. The time honoured Blue Lake Classic for streetstocks will have a large local field headlined by multi national championship winner Anthony Beare, Jason Duell, Jayden Edwards, Mark Jennings, Steve Gartner, Jeremy Weston and newcomer Hayden Jolly. “Some of these guys are running really well away from home so it will be good to see them on their home track,” Jennings said. “There will be 25 other competitors from Victoria and South Australia to take the money away from us though.” Gates open at 4pm and racing starts at 5pm on both nights..

Mount Gambier wine producer and owner of Caroline Hills Winery Helen Strickland has been appointed the new president of The Limestone Coast Grape and Wine Council Inc. (LCGWC). The current secretary of the Mount Gambier Regional Grapegrower’s Association, Helen said she was looking forward to working with a dynamic group that achieves results in a wide variety of areas across a highly successful industry. “The Limestone Coast has a strong reputation for its premium wine production and it contributes strongly and sustainably to the region’s economy, providing diverse employment opportunities across all skill levels, she said. “I admire the way that the LCGWC thinks regionally across grape growing, winemaking and viticulture, and I like the fact that members work collaboratively in a competitive environment. It was wonderful to be asked if I would be interested in this role, and I look forward to continuing the amazing work achieved by Peter Bissell and his team. Helen Strickland also sits on the board of the Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce, chairs the Mount Gambier & District Community Bank (Bendigo Bank) and is the independent chair of the South Eastern Professional Fishermen’s Association Inc., representing the interests of South Australia’s most valuable commercial fishery. Her appointment has the full support of outgoing LCGWC president Peter Bissell and vice president James Freckleton. “It’s great that Helen agreed to take over at the helm of the LCGWC after the position was vacant for a short time after the November 20 AGM; we will value her broad experience and she is a good fit into the business of the council, James said. “She has been fully endorsed as president by the Committee of Management. Peter Bissell spent five years as president of the LCGWC and has been a member of the management committee for more than 15 years. Significant projects during his tenure include the review into the 2012 Water Allocation Plan, successful lobbying for a Moratorium on Fracking during the Parliamentary Inquiry into Unconventional Gas, and an increase in LCGWC council levies to improve financial stability. The continued success of the LCGWC’s Limestone Coast Wine Show is also part of his legacy; Peter was a founding member of the show in 2001, and served on its committee for 10 years. Peter will continue as public officer to complete the Limestone Coast Mixed Dozen Wine Trails Project, which will be officially launched early in the new year.
