COLLECTED STUPIDITY - ROAD TRIP… By ROBBIE TANSEL Is there any more frustrating a situation to find yourself in as an adult as on a road trip, with your kids in the back of the car…and your other half in the front of the car? This was driven home to me recently whilst driving to and from Melbourne. The crux of the issue is that on a road trip you are confined to a ridiculously small space for a long period of time. Unlike most situations where you may be dealing with people that are irritating you, there is no opportunity to remove yourself from the situation. You can also not banish anyone else

from the car. I’m told it’s frowned upon to leave your children by the side of the road. There are many irritating behaviours that you are therefore subjected to with no way to escape. On our recent trip the problems started as we drove past the Glenburnie racecourse and Lebron asked if we were there yet. Obviously as an adult I realise that we’re not at Melbourne, but as a six year old you have no concept of what a Melbourne is and what it may look like. Mum and Dad can tell you helpful things like it’s a big city with tall buildings but that doesn’t mean much, even if you’ve actually visited Melbourne within the last couple of years. Having established that we’re not

there yet, about five minutes further down the road Lebron will start indicating he’s hungry. He will demand a snack. He will ask when it’s lunch time, despite the fact it’s only 10am and we’ve just finished a special treat of eating breakfast at McDonalds 10 minutes ago. This highlights one of the key issues with children on a road trip. They really don’t have much of an understanding of time. Lebron spent most of the trip querying as to how long it will take to get to Melbourne. There’s really no point in him having this information though. He has no concept of how long four hours is. He will continue to ask how long until we get there, and are we there yet

every five minutes from that point on. Occasionally I’ll try to answer the “are we there yet?” question by explaining, we’re never there. When we get there, it is no longer there. It is now here and here is not there. We will only ever be here. We can never be there. This sort of philosophical discussion really doesn’t achieve anything because they don’t have the cognitive functioning to comprehend how you’re trying to mess with them. Apart from no idea of time, they also have no idea of distance. They have no idea how long that two hundred and fifty kilometres is, or the fact that one hundred kilometres takes about an hour to travel. Even if they did, remember they really have no idea how long an hour is. While this is going on, from the moment we’ve gotten in the car my partner Donna is talking at me. I explained a couple of weeks ago that she doesn’t talk to me. She really doesn’t care if we take it in turns talking. She talks at me. Whether I’m listening or not is not the biggest issue in the moment. A week from now when I can’t remember something she told me, it will suddenly be an issue that I don’t listen to her. In this case I got two and a half hours primarily about the uni course she is undertaking, and all the comings and goings of her fellow students, tutors and lecturers. Generally I’m really trying at the moment to genuinely engage in her conversations, but while I’m driving I need to devote a fair amount of my concentration to following the two key road rules: don’t hit anything smaller than you and don’t get hit by anything bigger than you. As if Donna talking at a million miles an hour, Lebron’s five minutely queries about whether we’re there or whether it’s lunch time, is not distracting enough, Shaquille and Lebron start arguing and annoying each other in the back seat. Someone has poked someone. Someone is touching someone else’s

stuff. I’m now seeking out something bigger than us that I could accidentally hit. I’d really like Donna to get involved in what’s happening back there as I can’t solve the problem at 103 kilometres per hour, but there seems to be some sort of inbuilt function with her head where if there is noise coming out of the mouth, some sort of valve closes in the ears and sounds can’t be heard. She has no awareness that one of them has just pulled a knife and the other one is reaching for his gun. The next interesting thing that happens is that at the two and a half hour mark Donna has used up all of her energy with all the yapping and suddenly she’s asleep. At least all that talking was keeping me awake. Now I’m feeling sleepy. Luckily the two crazies in the back seat are still awake. Every five minute I’ll have to explain that we’re not there yet, and it’s not time for them to eat anything. The next key phrase that starts coming from the back seat is expressions of boredom. How can they be bored? There are DVD screens built into the back of the seats in front of them. There are multiple DVDs that they selected available to view. They have two iPads available for entertainment. There are books. There are a variety of puzzles hanging from activity centres covering the back of the seat as well as notepads and colouring in books. What do they want? A minigolf course in the back seat? STRONG PARTNERSHIP FOR 30 YEARS Boandik Lodge is an award winning aged care provider, with residents, requiring varying levels of care, never wanting for anything at the state-ofthe-art facilities. But Boandik Lodge is also acutely aware of its facilities and the residents still need to be an integral part of the community and getting residents out and about is a priority of the aged care provider. Over the past three decades, providing those outings for residents has been made possible through the generous support of K&S Fuels, with that partnership celebrating that 30 year milestone last week. General manager Peter Sims said K&S Fuels, which distributes Ampol and Caltex fuels, was proud to have built such a strong relationship with the

region’s premier aged care provider. “Thirty years ago the company began supplying fuel to run the first Boandik bus for residents outings,” Mr Sims said. “Then about 15 years on, we agreed to fuel a second Boandik bus.” The long standing relationship aligns with the K &S Fuels mantra of ‘locals supporting locals’. “K&S Fuels not only takes care of the regions fuel needs but also supports the local community and sporting clubs,” Mr Sims said. The two Boandik buses are in action every day, making trips of up to 100km, with around 21,000km racked up each year on getting the residents out into the community, visiting places and attending activities and events to keep them engaged in their local

ATTENTION ALL PET OWNERS Especially if you are hanging out in the Mount Gambier Rail Lands, it is a common sight to see people walking their dogs. With new legislation set to come into force on July 1, giving increased powers to authorised council officers, new signage is being placed in popular public places clarifying the new regulations around dogs on leashes and picking up after your favourite pooch. Changes to the act mean that dog owners can now face fines of $210 for failing to immediately collect, remove and dispose of dog faeces and for not having their dogs on a leash in a public place. The new signs are located around the Blue Lake and at the Railway Lands with additional signs to be installed in other areas in the coming months. “Public reserves and amenities are for the enjoyment and safety of the whole community and dog owners are asked to be mindful of other people and animals when using these facilities,” City of Mount Gambier Team Leader General Inspectorate Derek Ferguson said. “It is the responsibility of everyone in the community to keep these areas clean, safe and tidy for all. Responsible pet ownership comes down to more than just registration and microchipping.” Mount Gambier now has approximately 5800 registered dogs, an increase of around 1000 since July 2018 which general inspectors attribute to the success of the new Dogs and Cats Online (DACO) registration system. “A reminder that owners who are yet to register their pets under the new

community. “This has only been made possible with the busses we run and the fuel sponsorship from K&S Fuels,” Boandik CEO Gillian McGinty said. “This provides a lot of joy and happiness to many, many people. Boandik residents and Boandik community clients join together in group activity programs that support social interaction, health and wellbeing and migrants to our city who use the busses for transport from their homes to the migrant centre for their weekly catch ups, thanks to Boandik’s volunteer drivers.” The K&S Fuels partnership is the longest ongoing relationship Boandik has enjoyed with any of its many community based supporters. “It’s impossible to put a value on the benefits this generosity has made to so many people’s lives,” Mrs McGinty said. “Our residents look forward to their bus outings, and always return beaming with happiness and conversation about what they’ve done and seen on these trips.”

Changes to the Dog and Cat Management Act also mean that every owned dog and cat must be microchipped or owners risk being served a $170 fine or up to $750 for dogs of a prescribed breed. General Inspector Michelle Abramovic said the increase in the number microchipped pets has meant council was able to easily return the animal to its rightful owner, resulting in less impounds and lost dogs. “It is important that pet owners keep their microchip details up-to-date to ensure you can be easily contacted should we locate your pet,” she said. LIVING UP TO HER NAME One of Shakespeare’s most famous soliloquies is Juliet’s What’s in a Name. In the case of 16 year old art student Matisse Schmidt, it appears it could be quite a lot. The Year 11 Tenison Woods College student has a passion for painting and a name synonymous with the art form, with French painter Henri Matisse one of the icons of his generations. Matisse, the Mount Gambier based one, has been drawn to art from a very young age. “I have always really enjoyed drawing,” Matisse said. “Mum said I drew on my nan’s blinds and it was so nice that everyone was complimenting it and my nan didn’t try and clean them.” That was when Matisse was four years old and she has dabbled ever since, while only starting to take any formal kind of training in Year 8, at school. Painting is now her number one passion and she loves working with acrylics. She is also a perfectionist. “I seem to spend a lot more time on my pieces,” Matisse said. “I do just keep working on them until I am really happy with them.” One of her recently awarded paintings was six months in the making and even though she knows most of her classmates normally take two to three months, she is not fazed and continues to abide by her artistic regime. “The funny thing is, I am really only this fussy and this much of a perfectionist with art – nothing else,” she said. “For me, my art just has to be right.” She works both in the classroom

and at home, although she is yet to commandeer her own work space at home. “Sometimes I’m in my bedroom

or the dining room or wherever I can find a space,” Matisse said. Jane van Eeten is Matisses’s art

teacher and she was the one who encouraged the teenager, and some of her other classmates, to try their hand at the South East Art Society’s Open Art Awards, where she took out first prize in the Young Artist Award High School Age award for her work Big Skies after Ruisdael and also the Patron’s Award, which is selected by Diana Wiseman, for her work Greta – the painting that took Matisse six months to perfect. “Winning a prize was quite a surprise,” Matisse said. “Especially the Patron’s Award. I couldn’t believe how many people I didn’t know who came up to congratulate me.” In a bid to expand her art education, Matisse is about to undertake work experience at the Riddoch Art Gallery. “That is a really exciting opportunity for me,” she said.

CAMP GROUNDS FILLING FAST Easter long weekend is prime time for camping in National Parks and Conservation Parks along the Limestone Coast, and Department for Environment and Water Senior Ranger Cath Bell is recommending campers book online now to avoid missing out. “Many of the sites in our parks are already fully booked,” Cath said. “There are however a few spots left at Coorong Ocean Beach, Bool Lagoon and Naracoorte Caves. Even though some campsites are taken, you can still enjoy our parks by taking a day trip to explore. Bool Lagoon in particular is pretty amazing at the moment and is teeming with brolgas, an ideal day out for bird watchers.” Fire bans are currently in place, with gas fires only allowed for cooking. Dogs are not permitted in parks, with the exception of Coorong beaches where they must be on a lead. Rangers will be in parks over the busy period. Campers need to check availability and book online via the National Parks SA website before heading to their chosen site. Every Thursday morning seven year old TeKani is collected from her classroom by Janine Feil and her labradoodle Paddington and they head to the library for 20 minutes of reading. Not only does TeKani love this special one on one time she gets but her classmates love seeing Paddington on his weekly visits to the school. Janine and Paddington are part of the Story Dogs organisation – a worldwide phenomenon looking at supporting literacy in schools, as well as helping with social skills. McDonald Park has two Story Dog teams – Janine and Paddington and Leeanne Martin-Brown and Chester. It is a program that is now in its third year at the school, with each dog and volunteer working with four students each in a 20 minute sessions that involves the child reading, the volunteer reading and just generally spending some time together. It was a few years ago that teacher librarian Suzanne Harding discovered the program and contacted Mount Gambier coordinators Des & Chris Schwarz. “I am always looking for things that connect to reading,” Mrs Harding said. “At the time they did not have any dogs but I left my number in case things changed and at the beginning of 2017 I thought I would give it another go and it has been running in the school ever since.” It is a program aimed at Year 2 and 3 students, who are generally seven or eight years old, that need support with reading and/or confidence building.

“At the start of every year I contact the classroom teachers and see which students they would like to recommend for the program,” Mrs Harding said. As casual and relaxed as the Story Dog sessions are, they are carefully constructed. Not only do only a small percentage of dogs pass the stringent training to become part of the program but the ensuring the students read to the volunteer, as well as listening to the volunteer read is also critical. “It is just as important for children to listen to adults reading so they can learn how words are pronounced, as it is for them to do the reading. It is not the volunteers job to teach the children to read but just to support and encourage them,” Mrs Harding said. Not surprisingly as a teacher librarian, Mrs Harding is passionate about literacy and getting kids to read and this is just one program that supports her mission. “Some students are not exposed to books at home and therefore don’t know about the fabulous opportunities that exist with reading,” she said. “And some students don’t think they like reading but it is often just a matter of finding the genre that is right for them.” With each students the experience is different. “Sometimes they are a bit frightened of the dog when they first start but it is wonderful to see how their confidence grows, as well as the improvement in their reading,” volunteer Janine Feil said. Park School for just over a year now and loves being part of the program. “I wanted to do some volunteer work and I really enjoy this,” she said. “Last year I saw so much improvement in the children. And it is really good for the dog as well.” Janine became aware of the opportunity through the local dog obedience club where she met founders of the Mount Gambier branch Des & Chris Schwarz. Leeanne Martin-Brown has been part of the McDonald Park School Story Dog program since its inception – first

with her beloved German Shepherd Shara, who passed away, and now with her Staffordshire Terrier Chester. “I was friends with Des & Chris and they told me they were going to introduce Story Dogs in Mount Gambier and I was lucky that Shara, who was a beautiful natured dog, was accepted,” Leeanne said. “Story Dogs was a good fit for me because I am a great believer in reading.” Leeanne finds the program so rewarding and her new Story Dog – Chester – loves it. “He knows when it is Story Dog day and even when I try and get the bag ready quietly, he always seems to know and comes bounding up to me ready to leave,” Leeanne said. Aside from the dog, Leeanne also believes it is the nature of the sessions that really helps the kids. “I think they love the one on one time, whether they are there for reading or social skills, and there is no pressure and they feel special,” she said. RECORDS COULD TUMBLE AT PORTLAND TUNA COMPETITION Portland’s Hooked on Tuna competition has started with a bang with a 100kg plus tuna landed on the first weekend of competition, setting a high standard for the month long competition. Keen angler Martin Rombolas set the tone for the competition, securing a 104kg gutted and gilled tuna, claiming the title of heaviest catch of the day and for the competition on the opening weekend. Mr Rombolas, an experienced fisherman in Portland waters, said it was sensational to finally reel in a 100kg tuna. “Portland is a fantastic place to fish and I’m always down here fishing, however this is the first time I have ever caught a 100kg plus tuna and the timing couldn’t have been better with the first week of competition open,” he said. “The catch came from a bit of everything, good conditions and a team effort from the rest of my crew members. It’s a fantastic feeling.” Despite being the competition leader, Mr Rombolas hoped to see heavier fish caught over the remaining weekends. “It’s great to officially be in the running for the grand prize, however it’s a more exciting competition when there are a number of heavier entries closely vying for first place,” he said. “I hope to see a lot more 100kg plus tuna caught between now and the final weekend of the competition. I know I’ll definitely be out every weekend in April to try my luck again for an even bigger catch.” The Hooked on Tuna fishing competition continues through to Sunday, April 28, from the Portland Yacht Club. Hosted by Glenelg Shire Council in partnership with the Portland Sports Game Fishing Club and Portland Lions Club, registration cost is $20 per person per weekend, or a one-off fee of $40 which covers all weekends of fishing. MORE FUNDING FOR MUSEUM Member for Barker Tony Pasin has announced an additional $160,000 in Federal Government Funding to see the SA Volunteer Firefighters Museum, in Naracoorte, completed. The announcement comes after Mr Pasin secured an initial $160,000 in Federal Funding for the project in November 2018. The latest commitment brings the total to $320,000 from the Federal Government. The funding will be used for purpose-built museum buildings. “This second investment will ensure the project can be completed,” Mr Pasin said. “So many volunteers have dedicated so much time and hard

work to see the project come this far. I wanted to be able to ensure the project had the funds needed to be completed before Government goes into caretaker mode. It such an important project for South Australia and the South East in particular: to honour the legacy of our volunteers who often put their lives at risk to protect others. To Research, Record, Conserve and Promote the History and Equipment of the South Australian Volunteer Fire Service is a small way we can honour this legacy. I want to acknowledge the work of all of the volunteers associated with this project but in particular the irrepressible Rex Hall who is the driving force behind this initiative.” Mr Pasin has been successful in securing funding for the project through the Federal Government’s Community Development Grants Program. Easy enchilada bake 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil 1 red onion, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 teaspoon dried oregano 2 teaspoons ground cumin 2 teaspoons ground coriander 810g can crushed tomatoes 225g smokey chipotle cooking sauce 2 x 420g cans red kidney beans

4 cups shredded cooked chicken 6 flour tortillas, halved 3 cups grated tasty cheese 1/3 cup light thickened cooking cream 400ml tub sour cream 5 red radishes 2 green onions, sliced 1 long red chilli, sliced 1 long green chilli, sliced

Method Preheat oven to 200C/180C fan-forced. Grease a 5cm-deep, 24cm x 28cm (2-litre-capacity) roasting pan. Heat oil in a large frying pan over mediumhigh heat. Add red onion. Cook, stirring, for 5 minutes or until softened. Add garlic, oregano, cumin and coriander. Cook for 1 minute or until fragrant. Add crushed tomato and cooking sauce. Bring to a simmer. Reduce heat to medium-low. Simmer for 5 to 6 minutes or until thickened slightly. Stir in beans and chicken. Season with salt and pepper. Spread 3/4 cup chicken mixture over base of prepared dish. Layer with 4 pieces of tortilla, half the remaining chicken mixture and 1 cup cheese. Top with another 4 pieces of tortilla, remaining chicken mixture and remaining tortillas. Combine cream and half the sour cream in bowl. Season with salt and pepper.Spread sour cream mixture over top of bake. Sprinkle with 1 cup cheese. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until cheese is golden. Stand 10 minutes. Top with remaining sour cream. Sprinkle with remaining cheese, radish, green onion and chillies. Serve.

STUDENTS TACKLING ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

Students from across the Limestone Coast, representing 15 schools, met at Naracoorte Caves recently to attend the South East NRM Board’s first Young Environmental Leaders Program (YELP) forum for this year. This year’s program has over 60 students involved and this month’s forum was the first of four events for the year. NRM Education Coordinator Damien Bickley said YELP aims to connect students to the environment, and to fellow leaders from other schools. “For this first forum, sessions with Doug Nicholls and Ken Jones gave students insight into the Indigenous history of the area, including bushfoods, caring for country, and landscape change,” he said. “We also went on a tour to found out more about the underground world of bat caves, including trekking along some of the park’s new Rooftop Loop Walk.”

musicians from the highly-acclaimed Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance Ensemble at UCLA now

Mount Gambier-bound for the May 3-5 spectacular. The group of seven fellows are all studying for a Master of Music in Jazz Performance degree. Much like Mount Gambier’s James Morrison Academy of Music @ UniSA, the students have been selected for the intensive graduate degree through rigorous auditions, and train under internationally-renowned jazz musicians and educators. They also have the opportunity to perform internationally, with the Mount Gambier visit incorporated into a broader Australian tour marking International Jazz Day. “We’re so excited to host the Herbie Hancock Institute here in Mount Gambier; this will be yet another inspiring opportunity for the 5315 students and staff travelling here to perform, listen and learn from some incredible industry peers,” GIJ chief executive officer Belinda Shannon said. “There are many doors that open to talented jazz performers, and GIJ can really show participants the opportunities that are out there after graduating from school.”

The Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance Ensemble will perform at the Friday Welcome Concert on May 3 along with Grammy award-winning vocalist Kurt Elling, acclaimed jazz, blues and gospel singer, Lizz Wright, master organist Joey DeFrancesco, saxophonist Rickey Woodard, and brilliant young New York pianist and drummer, Julius Rodriguez. Tickets are available through Ticketbooth. The major guest artists will also be conducting student workshops throughout the GIJ weekend.

GIJ’s student participants are set fill 390 stage bands and vocal ensembles representing 134 schools from across Australia and New Zealand. Between them, they will perform 975 pieces of music on 12 stages throughout the GIJ precinct, competing in 12 Stage Band divisions and seven Vocal Ensemble Award divisions. The Schools Competition will run from 7am –5pm on Saturday May 4. Public entry is welcome, with Day Passes available through Ticketbooth.

SOCIAL YOUTH WEEK LAUNCH - CHILL ‘N’ CHAT @ METRO Youth Week has been officially launched in Mount Gambier with a casual Chill ‘N’ Chat session at Metro Bakery & Café. Headspace workers and representatives from other youth focus groups were on hand as anyone aged 12-25 was invited to hang out and take part in some activities including social bingo. Thirteen year old Zeek Quartermaine, from Grant High School, said his parents had told him about the Youth Week launch event. “And I thought, what the hell, I’ll come here and hang out and have some fun,” Zeek said. Local cancer support groups have welcomed the news that the Limestone Coast will earn a share of the $63.4million the Federal Government is set to invest in 13 regional locations to expand cancer treatment capacity through new radiation therapy services. The regional funding pool was part of the recently delivered budget and the news this region is set to benefit is a win for locally based cancer patients. “The radiation therapy funding is great news for the community,” Mount Gambier Breast Cancer Awareness Group member Karen Peterson said. “At such an emotional time no longer do patients have the pressure and cost to travel away from family to have treatment.” The new centres will deliver high quality, comprehensive radiation oncology services. “I think it is a big win for everyone in the Limestone Coast and well done to Tony Pasin for his commitment to the cause,” she said. The Member for Barker pushed for the Limestone Coast to be one of the 13 newly funded centres. “Too many Australians – especially people in regional and rural communities – cannot access radiation therapy because they live too far from their nearest radiation therapy centre,” Mr Pasin said. “Having to travel long distances for therapy means time, money and inconvenience for patients at this stressful time in their lives. Through this funding, we can help patients to overcome these issues, so they and their families can focus on what matters – fighting and beating cancer. We know that radiation therapy can open up options for people’s cancer treatment mix. ROAD RECONSTRUCTION ON TRACK

Last week, Naracoorte Lucindale Mayor Erika Vickery OAM was able to celebrate the completion of the reconstruction of Stage 1 of Old Caves Road, the first of three road construction stages to create a strong tourism link between Naracoorte and the Naracoorte Caves World Heritage Area. Old Caves Road is an important regional tourism route, linking Naracoorte to the Naracoorte Caves and ensuring it is suitable for tourism traffic means visitors can be directed through the Naracoorte Town Centre to the Naracoorte Caves. This reconstruction and further stages will deliver on one of the key targets of the Naracoorte Caves Connection project – that the Naracoorte township and the Caves site are well connected. The connection will be further enhanced through the development of the Caves Trail, a cycle and walking trail between the town and the Caves site. This project was undertaken by Naracoorte

Lucindale Council staff with contractor support. Council is also grateful to landowners who provide access to the land to source rubble. The project was also made possible because of State and Federal Government funding of more than $600,000 from the Special Local Roads Program. This supplemented the total $1.27 million project cost for this stage. Council looks forward to completing the next stages of the Old Caves Road reconstruction over the next two years. Stage 2 will involve a complete reconstruction of a 1km section from the Arthur Street intersection to the Sunrise Christian School. Stage 3 construction will commence 300m south of Pistol Club Road and finish 1.6km south of Pistol Club Road. The reconstruction of these sections of Old Caves Road will complement the section reconstructed between Pinkerton Road and Pistol Club Road in 2014. lifestyle1.net | 30

The Pioneers Men continue to build into the 2019 Premier League season with Kentrell Barkley having another standout performance with 29 points and 15 rebounds as the Icehouse fans enjoyed a 17 point home court victory. Little separated the two sides in the opening quarter with an Erik Burdon buzzer beating three tying the scoreline up at the first break. Barkley, too, stamped his authority on the contest with a 10 point opening quarter, including taking only four seconds to score the opening basket. The star US import continued to be influential in the second with a nine point effort, with skipper Tom Daly also starting to find plenty of the ball in good shooting position, ending the quarter with nine points, as well. The Pioneers enjoyed a five point lead at the half but it was still proving difficult to shake off the North Adelaide Rockets, who continued to stay in touch in the third. Tom Daly continued to control the offence for the home side and brought his points tally to 18 by the final change. Eventually the Pioneers were able to break away, extending the 10 point three time lead to a 17 point final buzzer margin after scoring a game high 31 points in the final stanza. Dayjar Dickson had his most productive quarter with 10 points, while Brad Rathjen scored seven of his 11 points, including an impressive three. His 30 minutes of game time and ability to distribute the ball continues to justify his return to the basketball court from the football field. The victory still has the Pioneers sitting in the middle of the pack on the competition standings but with a couple of games in hand, coach Richard Hill would be looking to build towards the team’s next challenge – an April 27 road clash with second placed Forestville. Barkley and Tom Daly continue to be the go to players for the Pioneers, while Dickson, who finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds, continues to find his feet in the Premier League. Again, in the end, it was the Pioneers ability to create fast break opportunities

PIONEERS AVENGE ROUND ONE LOSS In the opening round the Pioneers Women fell just short of upsetting the North Adelaide Rockets and on home pine, and with captain Amanda Frost on fire, the Pioneers easily accounted for the Rockets, with a 25 point victory, improving their record to 4-2 for the season. It is no secret the quality that Frost has brought to the Pioneers line-up and her 34 points, including five from beyond the arc, showed just how damaging she can be. Pachis Roberts also continues to have an impact since arriving at the Icehouse, and her 19 points and seven rebounds showed she will continue to be pivotal. Emily Winter, who continues to be the most damaging of the locals, had a 20 point, nine rebound game and arguably the most damaging stat was the Pioneer winning the points from turnover category 25 points to four. Frost wasn’t the only one with the hot hand from three point territory, with Roberts hitting three from four and Winter sinking five from six. The Rockets only had two players hit double figures on the scoresheet as the Pioneers continued their strong defensive efforts. The upcoming clash with Forestville will be intriguing, with both sides boasting the same season record to date.

For the first time since 2013 Glencoe has claimed the McInnes Memorial Shield with an impressive 56 point victory over 2018 runner-up Mt Burr. After a tight opening quarter, where star forward Brodie Foster snared three of the Murphies’ four majors, Glencoe slowly took control, courtesy of a midfield that has now developed a great chemistry built on a few seasons together as a unit, continually peppering the ball inside fifty. The weight of supply was telling with Glencoe adding 15 goals to eight after quarter time. The Murphies boast three mobile talls in Foster, who nailed four, Alex Hentschke, who kicked a game high six goals, and Adam Gregory, who chipped in with two, and when you add the mercurial Tory Weaver to the mix – he kicked three – and the resting midfielders, who usually chip in as well, and Glencoe certainly looks to have improved scoring power. For coach Zacc Cocks to back up their comprehensive round one win with a drought breaking victory over the competition pace setters of the past decade was a good sign, the Murphies could well be the real deal in 2019. “It was so good to final win the McInnes Memorial Shield,” Cocks said. “We played really well.” Some solid off season recruiting has seen Glencoe now enjoying better depth and that is what Cocks hopes will see them catapult up the ladder. “We have good enough quality now,” he said. “We have 21 A Grade players where before we might have had 10-15. The expectation now is

that we are winning every dame of footy we play and we should be dirty on ourselves if we don’t. I just want us to play with confidence and expect to be a better side. Jack Gregory finished with four for the Mossies, while Sam and Josh Wallis backed up their strong round one performances to be the most consistent of the Mt Burr players. Dylan Ridley was also influential with ball in hand, while Corey Gamble won plenty of the football as well, but in the end the repeat entries earned by Glencoe were telling. “If you get that many repeat entries eventually you are going to score” Cocks said. “It definitely made a difference for us to win so many centre clearances and I do think our midfield has developed a really good understanding having played together for so long now.” Hatherleigh backed up suggestions they will also be a competition improver with a nine goal win over Port MacDonnell, while reigning premiers Robe took care of Kalangadoo with a 43 point win. Kongorong snared their first win of 2019 when they took on the Saints.

After a disappointing 2018, Port MacDonnell has started its 2019 campaign in style with an impressive 20 goal victory over Hatherleigh. It was a new look Demons outfit, although boasted familiar players from seasons gone by, with only Jess Trench and Megan Hein remaining from last year’s team in the same roles. Toni-Lee Gilmore and Sophie Roach have returned to the top side to take on the shooting roles, with Gilmore back from a year in A Reserve and Roach after a season off, while defender Ash Allen (Heald) has also returned from a break from the game and Teagan Merrett back after missing a couple of seasons courtesy of travel. The Demons started strongly and wore the Eagles down, building their lead every quarter to end up with the comfortable 20 goal margin. Hatherleigh tried everything it could to work its way back into the game, bringing Cate Lepley onto the defensive wing at half time, moving Lara McGregor back onto the dangerous Gilmore in the final quarter and coach Melissa McGrath also moving her self into the shooting circle for the final stanza as well but nothing worked. Hein played arguably her best game since becoming a Demon and her combination with Allen created plenty of turnover ball for the Demons to take advantage of, and with the Demons being able to isolate Gilmore in the shooting circle, the scoreboard reflected the Demons’ dominance. Cody Manning earned the start at wing attack and hit the circle hard and fed with precision, while Jess Trench and Merrett shared the centre/wing defence roles and used their pace in transition to find their way through the defence of McGregor and Maddy Redman. Maddy Pulmer’s accuracy certainly kept the Eagles in the contest, with Sarah Faulkner at her consistent back running hard both ways to try and work her team back into striking distance. Hatherleigh did mount a challenge in the final quarter but were too far back and the Demons settled and with Hein dominating in the defensive circle, Port MacDonnell regained control. Sharp shooter Malinda Markiewicz led Glencoe to victory over Mt Burr, Kongorong got the job done over Nangwarry and Kalangadoo got the better of Robe. DEMONS OPEN SEASON WITH A WIN

It was a dramatic final quarter but in the end, South Gambier’s young side stood up when it counted most and held on for a two point victory over 2018 finalist Casterton Sandford. Trailing by 15 points heading into the final quarter, the Demons fought their way back to just a kick, but when the Cats were able to snare a couple of classy goals, the home side looked set for an honourable loss but thanks to Mason Hein’s work in the ruck and the ability of Brett O’Neil and Bronson Saffin to use the ball, kicking long into the forward line and giving the likes of Brayden Kain and Todd Reid every opportunity, the Demons again fought back. A classic crumbing goal from Brent Howard and a major to Brayden Kain saw South hit the front and they were able to hang on. In the end, the pace of the young Demons proved pivotal with the likes of Kyle Jones and Brodie Glynn being able to break the lines and give Kain, who finished with six goals, the chance to compete one on one with their opponents. The move of Todd Reid from defence to centre half forward after the half time break, was also a master stroke from coach Brett Exelby, giving the Demons another strong marking target and Reid rewarded his team mates with two goals. Jake Tentye was outstanding across all four quarters. “He (Tentye) was awesome all game,” Exelby said. “When we needed someone, he really stood up. He would win the hard ball and he also took some strong marks for a smaller type player.” Mason Hein was also a key in the ruck, as was Adam Kuhl who won some critical contests in that frenetic final quarter. “It was a really good game,” Exelby said. “It was a really tough contested game right from the start.” The Cats threatened to pull away in the second quarter before the Demons settled and again, in seasons past, that 15 point three quarter time buffer against a more experience, bigger bodied opponent, might have been enough to ensure defeat, but when the Demons won the ball first their pace was telling. “I wanted us to back ourselves in with attack and run,” Exelby said. “It was never our effort that was a problem during the game, just our concentration. The good thing was we never let the game out of our sights. When we were able to win the ball out of the packs, our leg speed took care of itself.” Josh Searle was the best of the Cats, with four goals and winning plenty of ball, while Nick Georgiadis showed he will be an asset at his new club. Daniel Richardson and Dylan Ayton also looked dangerous with ball in hand, while Will MacDonald still had an influence. East Gambier won an arm wrestle with West Gambier by five points, with Riley Janeway starring for the Bulldogs and Tom Zeitz leading the way for the Roos. Returning North Gambier coach Justin McConnell not only started with a win over reigning premiers Millicent but also kicked eight majors. Walker was outstanding with her work rate, conversion and ability to take the ball strongly, no matter the pressure applied by the Cats defenders, while Hood’s passing into her shooting partner were pinpoint. The accuracy of Walker’s finishing, she converted 35 from 43, no doubt inspired her team mates as defenders Brandi Bouchier and Alyce Mourbey never gave up an easy ball to Tori Perry and Christine Harris and their work over the shot and rebounding also meant there were few second chances for the Cats. Mourbey was also a key transition player with her strong driving through the mid court, while the return of the Alyssa Boylan to the mid court was a key to the Demons’ win, as she worked hard through the centre third and hit the circle frequently to find her young shooters in space. Young star Alyssa Duncan made her debut in the top grade and her battle with Scarlett Jarrad, who was arguably the Cats’ best, was one of the match ups of the day. The two were never far apart and took every ball under pressure and both made significant contributions to their sides – Duncan with her clever passing and Jarrad with her determination to win the ball back for her team. South’s other debutant Riley Buckingham had her hands full with the experienced Haylee Rhook but also grew across the game to become a key part of the defensive unit, while Rhook certainly worked every angle to find the circle’s edge and give her shooters an outlet option as they looked to make better position. The return of Marlee Gartlan to the Cats was certainly cause for optimism and the young defender had some good moments and showed she will be able to create plenty of turnovers for Casterton Sandford, while Sharna Fidler, who entered the fray in the second half got some important touches. Madalene Cleary, again proving her versatility, started in goal defence and wore Walker hard, before moving to the centre where she became the key feeder. On the back of defenders Hayley Dunn and Madi Haggett, Millicent was able to easily account for a rebuilding North Gambier, while West Gambier, also led by defenders Maddy Teakle and Amy Cram, got the better of a new look East Gambier line-up. NEW YORK, NEW YORK Former Cronulla NRL player Valentine Holmes, who turned his back on a $5million contract to try out in the NFL has been given a chance with NFL team the New York Jets as part of an expansion of the International Player Pathway program. Holmes, who has been training as a running back, wide-receiver and punt/kick returner during the past three months, will take a significant pay cut from his NRL days with pathway players on NFL practice squads earning just $181,500 Australian a season. Holmes has represented both Queensland in State of Origin and Australia as a rugby league player.

TEEN TRACK & FIELD SENSATION Aussie teen sensation Celeste Mucci has emerged as a star of the future for Australian athletics after her stunning double at the national championships in Sydney. Mucci claimed a double gold at the track and field championships, becoming the first woman since 1994 to be the Australian champion for the 100m hurdles and the heptathlon. Definitely one to watch heading towards the 2020 Olympics.

SUMMER SERIES RESULTS Race eight of the Mount Gambeir Cylcing Club Summer Series tested the 14 cyclists who took on the blustery conditions to complete the 40km course. The tight finish had a bunch of eight riders crossing the line with the same finish time. The scratch group proved too strong with an average speed that dipped just under the 40km mark. Sean Angus crossed first, by half a wheel, in an exciting sprint finish with Luke Wight, second. YOUNG CRICKETERS MAKE TALENT SQUAD

The Western Waves have announced their squads for the 2019/20 season, following the assessment of Youth Premier League, interassociation matches, country week games, as well as club cricket and Western Waves trials. It sees the Mount Gambier Cricket Association strongly represented with two players in the Under 14 line-up and three in the Under 16 squad. Jared Kuhl and Elwood Geary are part of the Under 14 squad and Sam O’Donnell, Kaidyn Weber and Bodey Hosking, who all have plenty of Western Waves experience under their belts,

The winter months will now be spent training hard and attending a series of trials before the final 13 players are selected to compete in the 2019/20 Youth Premier League season.
