COVER • FLOATATION THERAPY ARRIVES IN MOUNT GAMBIER Jenna Douglas opened the doors of Little Birdy Medispa almost 18 months ago with her vision to create a wellbeing sanctuary for clients – a place where self-love, relaxation and a little bit of you time is at the core of the experience. Jenna always had a dream to open a float centre and that dream has come to reality. In November last year. HIGHLAND DANCERS CONTINUE TO SHINE ON STATE & NATIONAL STAGE Margaret Cleves School of Dancing students enjoyed a successful weekend of competition earlier this month, dancing at the South Australian Championships and Competition at Scotch College in Adelaide. Adjudicators were Margaret Paterson and Margaret Johnston, both from Queensland, and Elizabeth McLauchlan, from Victoria. Ten year old Lucy Edwards (pictured) was successful in winning the South Australian Championship 7-11yrs, as well as the Premier Celtic Title 7-11yrs. Hailee Pearce was third in both the South Australian Championship 7-11yrs and the Premier Title, and Ellie Mullan was placed fourth in the South Australian Championship 7-11yrs and the Premier Title. In the 12-15yrs section, Ebony McDonald was runner up in the South Australian Title and won the Celtic Premier Title. In the Pre Premier sections, Anna Le Cornu won a gold and a silver medal in the Primary section, Laura Le Cornu won the Beginners State Title 9yrs & Under and also the Trophy Dance, Zena-Lily Jackson was joint winner of the Novice State Title 11yrs & over and won the Trophy Dance, Correa Bachmann placed fourth in the Intermediate State Title 10yrs & Under, Georgia Seidel was runner up in the Intermediate State Title 11yrs & Over, and Joshua Kain placed third in the Intermediate State Title 11yrs & Over. Dancers are now busy preparing for the New South Wales Championships and the Champion of Champions Championships of Australia, which are being held in Newcastle at Easter. REMEMBERING JAYNE Chris O’Callaghan is set for a sleepless night this Saturday as he joins the hundreds of Limestone Coast residents churning out laps of the Blue Lake Sports Park oval as part of the Relay For Life – the Cancer Council’s major fundraiser. It is an event that attracts participants across three categories – survivors, carers and those who have lost a loved one to the insidious disease. Chris falls into the latter category with the third anniversary of wife Jayne’s passing coming up next month. Safe to say it is still raw for Chris and his three children Emma, Daniel and Louise, who was only three months old at the time of her mother’s initial diagnosis, a family that is sharing their story so others know they are not alone. “Everyone deals with this kind of

situation differently and I’m certainly not saying ours is the right or the only way,” Chris said. “Jayne was very involved in planning how life was going to look without her and I just hope that sharing our experiences can help even one person going through a similar battle.” Jayne’s battle was waged for seven years after her June 2008 diagnosis, of what was an aggressive stage four tumour that had made its way into the lymph nodes. “Jayne was such a strong person, her determination and will to live and to keep going was incredible,” Chris said. “I do think it’s important that people understand what an inspirational person she was and, of course, I am keeping her memory going for the kids.” Jayne’s initial diagnosis was

followed by surgery and then 18 months of treatment and came only months after the family had relocated to Mount Gambier, meaning the usual support networks were no longer on their doorstep. “That initial diagnosis did put our world in a spin,” Chris said. “For that first 6-8 weeks we didn’t know how things were going to go and what we were actually up against.” But Jayne, Chris and their young family, with the help of Jayne’s newfound Mount Gambier based friends, fought hard and Jayne recovered nicely, even running a half marathon. Reassessing priorities and plans are not unusual in the face of surviving a serious illness and for Jayne and Chris, it saw them decide to take their young family on the trip of a lifetime – heading around Australia for 12 months. “Jayne was feeling so well and right back into her fitness and even running that half marathon,” Chris said. “We had a great 12 months – that trip is definitely our highlight.” But things were about to take another turn, with Jayne’s health deteriorating in the final six weeks or so of the ultimate family holiday. The upshot of medical checks was the cancer had returned and so was the need for treatment. So after spending 2011 creating precious family memories, 2012 saw Jayne back on the treatment treadmill – again though, Jayne bounced back. That was until Christmas 2013 when she was again very sick – the cancer had spread to her brain. “Even then, we were told she might have six months and we were so fortunate to get another two years with Jayne,” Chris said. That certainly gave the three kids a chance to build up more memories of their brave mother.

“We never hid anything from the kids,” Chris said. “We told them everything, as young as they were, and I think it really made a massive difference for them when it did come the time of Jayne’s passing. We didn’t want to sugar coat anything and tried to explain what was going on in terms they could understand.” Tough discussions were had as Jayne talked about the birthdays she was going to miss and the weddings she would never see. For the kids and Chris, there are 12,500 photos on his hard drive and they are priceless, capturing Jayne and her time as mother and wife of this still grieving family. “You wait a long time trying to find the right person and to then realise they are not going to be around forever is tough,” Chris said. In fact, Chris still often speaks about Jayne in the present tense – she is still very much the centre of the O’Callaghan family. It was a love story that started in 2000 in Alice Springs and was cut too short 15 years later. “But Jayne gave us so much – more than a lot of people give you in 40 or 50 years,” Chris said.

The kids openly talk about not wanting to ever forget and about their concerns about memories of their mum fading. The photos aside, Chris is also putting Jayne’s life story down on paper. It is about preserving the memory of the love of his life and mother of his children but certainly has been a cathartic experience for a man, who had to become mother and father to his children, three years ago. “I could just talk about Jayne all day long and the kids are often the same,” Chris said. Jayne’s story is one thing but so is the story of the family she left behind. “I just want to raise awareness so people can understand what families go through,” Chris said. The constant trips to Adelaide, the endless hours in hospitals, the uncertainty of how effective treatment will be, the balancing act of being together as a family but still allowing the kids to get on with their schooling, sporting commitments and time with friends – it is a juggling act that tests even the strongest people. The girls participated in the Relay For Life a couple of years ago but this weekend is Chris’s first time as part of Jayne’s Possums.

INDOOR RECREATION CENTRE COMMUNITY MEETING The push for an indoor pool has started to gain momentum again, and with the city’s sporting codes looking to join forces, the dream of a state-of-the-art indoor recreation centre is back in focus. A community meeting is set down for this Wednesday, from 7pm, at Mount Gambier’s Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre and organisers are hopeful people from all walks of life and all potential users of such a facility will head along to give their thoughts and to hear just where the project sits at the moment.

Making a splash in the pool and community, Lou’s Swim School students were all smiles on Monday when they handed more than $1400 to the Mount Gambier Hospital’s Paediatric Unit. In a special presentation at the Jubliee Motor Inn swimming pool, young swimmers met with Mount Gambier and Districts Health Advisory Council’s Maureen Klintberg, Dr Daham De Silva, Dr Matthias Wichmann and nurse Joanne Turley to present money raised during a swim-a-thon late last year. The swimmers and their families collectively raised $1450 for the hospital’s paediatric unit and Lou’s Swim School proprietor Louise Waters was impressed by the efforts shown by her students and their parents. “You are never too young to understand what it means to give back

Lemon curd bliss balls 190g (1 1/4 cups) raw cashews 35g (1/2 cup) shredded coconut, plus 35g (1/2 cup), toasted, extra 25g (1/4 cup) rolled oats

60ml (1/4 cup) coconut cream 2 teaspoons maple syrup Pinch of salt 1-2 tablespoons lemon curd

Method Process the cashews, coconut, oats, coconut cream, maple syrup and salt in a food processor until finely chopped. Spread the extra toasted coconut over a plate. Roll 1 tablespoon of cashew mixture into a ball. Make a deep indentation in the ball and insert 1/4-1/2 teaspoon lemon curd. Pinch the cashew mixture around the indentation to enclose the curd and gently roll to seal (don’t worry if a little lemon curd oozes out). Roll the ball in toasted coconut to coat. Repeat to make 15 balls. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one week.

MELANOMA MARCH HITS $5000 MARK Mount Gambierâ€™s second Melanoma March has been a huge success, building nicely on the efforts of the inaugural 2017 march. Seventyeight walkers took to the Blue Lake track earlier this month, with melanoma survivor Toby Rayner, and Australian Melanoma Research Foundation CEO Rachael Sporn leading the way. HIGH PERFORMERS SOUGHT AFTER AT TE MANIA A total clearance of 168 bulls and a top of $32,000 was recorded at Te Mania Angus’ annual bull sale last

week. The exceptionally even line up of bulls attracted a large crowd of 174 bidders registered on property

and on AuctionsPlus. The top priced bull, Lot 49, Te Mania Malin M170, was purchased by Elizabeth Roche of Arden Angus, Adelong, NSW for $32,000. This striking son of Te Mania Jerilderie J10 impressed with good frame, body length, and balance, with growth figures in the top 1% of the breed for 200D (+104), 600D (+139) and IMF% of +3.9. Students collected 1.7 tonnes of rubbish over half a million square metres – covering the college grounds and surrounding areas including the Rail Lands, White Avenue, Shepherdson Road, St Paul’s Church and Malseed Park. COLLECTED STUPIDITY - GOVERNMENTAL... By ROBBIE TANSEL Well thankfully for everyone my stripper articles were completed as a trilogy last week when the good folks

at Lifestyle1 provided suitable stripper pictures. For those who haven’t been following my rubbish the last few

weeks, and I don’t blame you, I’ve been discussing a recent directive from the Chinese government outlawing strippers at funerals. The Lifestyle1 graphic designers thought they’d be funny and provide stripper pictures to accompany my article that I wasn’t impressed with for two weeks. Okay, they were funny. Now that we’ve got it all sorted I was hoping we’d move on to a completely new topic this week. I haven’t changed my feeling that this is a baffling decision by the Chinese government. So imagine my surprise this week when I learnt that the Chinese parliament has elected their current president Xi Jinping as president for life. Let me get this straight; after making the worst decision in the history of government, the parliament have

overwhelmingly voted for the person responsible to remain president for life. Keep in mind I don’t know the results of the State election at this point in time, but I’m wondering if I missed something and a similar thing happened in South Australia. Is it possible the State government voted Jay Weatherill in as premier for life and I missed the news report? That’s got to be the only explanation as to how we’ve been stuck with Labor making atrocious decisions for this long, right? And the total inadequacy and incompetence of the Liberals obviously. I’m sure Mr Jinping is a lovely chap, but he’s shown with this whole funeral thing that occasionally he does get things wrong. Think of those talented business women whose income has suddenly dried up. I’m sure it’s already

putting a dent in the Chinese economy. I’m still totally bewildered as to what he thinks people are going to do at funerals now. What concerns me most about electing a president for life is the permanence of it. Let’s just say Xi Jinping does something else crazy, like forward selling the rights to forests in the South East…of China, there’s nothing you can do about it. To me it’s the same sort of short sightedness of a person getting a tattoo. You are making a commitment that you’re going to still like this thing in thirty years time. There aren’t many things that I can be sure I’m still going to like in thirty years. Hawaiian pizza. Hot chips. Pepsi. Beanie Kids. It’s a short list. …Oh, and Donna as well obviously. I thought I said that. Think of all the tattoo trends and whether those people would still get that tattoo again now, let alone in thirty years. Remember when girls all got a butterfly on their butt? Wouldn’t do that anymore. Remember in the 90s when every guy was getting barbed wire tattooed around their bicep. Bet they wish they hadn’t done that. Chinese characters tattoos. I suspect they all actually said, “Say no to strippers at funerals.” That seems like poor taste now, doesn’t it? The point is, people committed to liking these things for the entirety of their lives, and I bet most of them don’t anymore. I think of some of the dumb things I’ve done in my life that were fashionable at the time but thankfully were only temporary things. I got my ear pierced at one stage. It was fine. But only for six months. Then it was ridiculous. I dyed my hair blonde like Eminem in the 90s. Imagine if I was a forty year old guy with white blonde hair now. Again, it was fine for a short period of time, but you wouldn’t want to have it for life. Apart from that, being blonde made me dumber. I locked my car keys in my car twice in one week following having my hair bleached. I’d never done it before. I’ve never done it since. Seems pretty clear to me. Likewise I wouldn’t want to commit to someone ruling my country for life either. That gives me such a good idea. I wonder if they’ve ever considered having a system of government where the people vote in their leaders and representatives to rule and make decisions. Yeah, you’re right. It’d never work. Chicken & bean quesadillas 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1 zucchini, peeled into ribbons 1 small red onion, finely chopped 3 garlic cloves, crushed 1 teaspoon ground coriander 1 teaspoon ground cumin 400g can red kidney beans 50g grape tomatoes, quartered

1/4 cup fresh coriander leaves 4 flour tortillas 2/3 cup grated reduced-fat cheddar 1/2 x 330g jar whole roasted peppers 1 cup shredded cooked chicken 20g baby spinach 1/3 cup light sour cream 1 lime, cut into wedges

Method Heat 1/2 the oil in a large frying pan over high heat. Cook zucchini, turning, for 2 to 3 minutes or until tender. Transfer to a plate. Heat remaining oil in pan over medium-high heat. Cook onion, stirring, for 3 minutes or until softened. Add garlic, ground coriander, cumin and beans. Cook, stirring, for 5 minutes or until beans are heated through. Remove from heat. Add tomato and fresh coriander. Season with salt and pepper. Stir to combine. Preheat a sandwich press. Place 2 tortillas on workbench. Top each with cheese, bean mixture, capsicum, chicken and spinach. Sandwich with remaining tortillas. Place quesadillas, one at a time, in sandwich press. Cook for 4 to 5 minutes or until well toasted and heated through. Cut into wedges. Serve with sour cream and lime.

AWARD WINNING FILM SET TO SCREEN IN BORDERTOWN Bordertown’s Walkway Gallery has teamed with the Bordertown Cinema to present the latest film from Australian director, writer & cinematographer Warwick Thornton - the man behind another award winning movie, Samson and Delilah. Sweet Country, a movie inspired by real events, will hit the screen this Friday at 7.30pm, with the gallery opening its doors at 5pm. Sweet Country centres on Sam, a middle-aged Aboriginal man, who works for a preacher in the outback of Australia’s Northern Territory. When Harry, a bitter war veteran, moves into a neighbouring outpost, the preacher sends Sam and his family to help Harry renovate his cattle yards. But Sam’s relationship with the cruel and ill-tempered Harry quickly deteriorates, culminating in a violent shootout in which Sam kills Harry in self defence. As a result, Sam becomes a wanted criminal for the murder of a white man, and is forced to flee with his wife across the deadly outback, through glorious but harsh desert country. A hunting party led by the local lawman Sergeant Fletcher is formed to track Sam down. But as the true details of the killing start to surface, the community begins to question whether justice is really being served.

NELSON FESTIVAL RETURNS THIS WEEKEND The third annual Road2River festival will once again return to the Nelson riverbanks this Saturday, offering eventgoers a weekend of diverse entertainment, markets and exhibitions. ACTIVE APRIL RETURNS TO REGION Portland’s Active April campaign will expand this year, giving local residents more opportunities to take part in free exercise activities. The local Premier’s Active April program will showcase a sample of what’s available around town for people to get their 30 minutes of daily activity. There will be a concentrated week of Fitness by the Sea group activities on the foreshore on April 16-20 but organisers hope to highlight other regular free activities that happen every week. Active April is being coordinated by a group of collaborators including Portland District Health (PDH), Glenelg Shire Council, YMCA, Brenda’s Functional Fitness (BFF) and PT@Home. COMMUNITY GRANT PROGRAM DEADLINE LOOMING Organisations have up until March 31 to apply for their share of $50,000 grant funding that is available for charitable projects that build capacity in the Limestone Coast. The grants are made possible through a now five year old funding partnership between the Stand Like Stone Foundation and OneFortyOne Plantations. OneFortyOne Plantations has committed to a funding increase of $50,000 per annum for the next three years. Projects previously funded through the OneFortyOne Community Capacity Building grants have brought extensive sustainable benefits to the region and have directly benefited youth, migrants, unemployed and pre-school groups, with indirect benefits extending broadly across the region. The OneFortyOne Community Capacity Building grants support charitable projects between $5-20K that build capacity in the region. To be eligible, projects must have a charitable benefit and will be assessed on their ability to grow communities and progress them towards selfsustainability. Applications close at 5pm on March 31. As she did last year, Kaylee Whitehead (Gambier) achieved three new individual records, bettering the previous results in Open Girls High Jump, Triple Jump and Hurdles. Not to be outdone, Gui Ros-Smith (Mount) also set three new records. These came in the Under 14 Boys Hurdles, Triple Jump and Long Jump. KAI ALLEN SET TO MAKE HISTORY

In 2016, Kai Allen was a relative newcomer to the Australian karting scene but he captured plenty of attention and KartOz Magazine ranked him as the number one driver, across all senior and junior registered karters, in Australia. With a national championship already under his belt, the youngster opted to move out of his age group and test himself

against older, more experienced drivers and he continues to impress. His 2017 results have seen him ranked third in the 2017 KartOz Magazine rankings for all Australian karters and this season is already seeing Kai stamp his authority on the competition. He is competing in two junior classes in this year’s Australian Kart Championship and is currently placed second in both those national championships. The KartOz Magazine rankings are based on performances at the major karting events. Kai is also set to make a little piece of history when the Australian Formula One Grand Prix revs into action at Melbourne’s Albert Park this weekend. The iconic grid girls are a thing of the past in Formula One and that has seen Kai being given the opportunity to head out onto the Albert Park track and rub shoulders with the world’s best as he gets the honour of holding the umbrella for one of the competing drivers.

LAKERS PUT IN STRONG SHOWING AT SA COUNTRY BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Basketball Mount Gambier has returned from the 2018 SA Country Championships with three titles. The Lakers Under 16 Boys Division 1 (pictured bottom right) and the Under 14 Boys Division 1 and 2 teams all winning their championships deciders. The Under 16 team was coached by Dan Stratford, while Jason Baron (division two) and Robbie Young (division one) were in charge of the two championship winning Under 14 teams. The Under 14 Girls Division 1 team almost made it four State titles, losing their title decider in double over time. There were also two standout individual efforts with Alyssa Duncan (above) being named the Player of the Championship in Under 14 Girls, bringing home the Trisha Flett Memorial Trophy and Mikaela Horrigan (abover right) sharing the Under 16 Girls Player of the Championship award, the Sally Jane Allen Memorial Trophy, with Lana Gregoric, from the Riverland.

Bowls SA most Prestigious Event of the Year for 2018 was held at the Moonta & Ardrossan Bowling Clubs earlier this month. The Prestige Medley, which consists of 12 players playing Fours, Triples and Pairs, is divided into two pools playing a round robin to decide the two top teams who then go on and play off the two top teams in the other pool for first, second & third place. SPORT AT A GLANCE SOUTH EARNS FIRST GRAND FINAL SPOT In Division 1, in front of a very good crowd South Indians fought out a tight tussle with Federal to make their way into next weekend’s Grand Final Series, for the first time in eight seasons. Federal opened the score in the top of the third inning, off Indians starting pitcher, Dean Hamilton. Lead off batter, Shane Howard had a fly ball dropped at second base by Ryan Placucci to find himself at first base, went to second on a wild pitch , then advanced to third on Kane McMillan’s hit to right field. Howard then scored on Gavin Smith’s hit into an error, again by Placuuci, with McMillan also scoring on that error for a two run lead. Morale replaced Hamilton on the mound at the top of the fourth and he kept the Demon batters hitless picking up two strikeouts in the process. South tied the scores in the bottom of the fourth when Bruce Morale arrived at first after a wild throw from shortstop McMillan, stole second, advanced to third on Alex Lewis’ muffed fly to right fielder Alex Pearson. He scored on Travis Lockwood’s hit to third base Gavin Smith, whose throw failed to beat him to the plate. Lewis scored on Ben Nash’s hit to centre field before the inning was shut down. South scored a further run in the next inning when Steve Issacson hit safely to centre field, went to second on a wild throw from pitcher Alex Reppin, advanced to second on Morale’s hit back to the pitcher and scored on the subsequent wild throw from Reppin. A further run was added in the sixth. Ben Nash hit into another error, this time from shortstop McMillan. He scored on Jesse Balshaw’s two-bagger to centre field to give South the lead four runs to two. Federal closed the gap by one in the top of the seventh when Howard doubled to centre field and scored on McMillan’s double to right field. The eighth inning was a watershed moment for the Demons as they had a huge opportunity to go ahead in the game. Smith singled, Reppin was hit by a pitched ball to have two on none out. Wade Chant out on an infield fly and Clay Carpenter sacrifice bunted to advance the runners. Nathan Taylor loaded the bases when he was given an intentional walk without receiving a pitch. Three on two out. Unfortunately Alex Pearson hit a shot straight to first base to close off the late charge. The Indians sealed the game in the top of the eight adding one more to their score. Lewis doubled to left field and scored on Nash’s sacrifice fly, again to centre field. Federal tried to rally in the top of the ninth but again left two runners on base leaving South winners five runs to three. South had seven safehits, left seven on base, picked up nine strikeouts and made three errors to Federal six safehits, left eight runners on, seven strikeouts and made six errors. Millicent knocked out the more fancied Tigers in the Division two Preliminary final to advance to next weekend’s Grand Final against Central. Millicent scored four runs in the first, all unearned. Tigers replied with two runs in their turn at bat. They added a further three runs in the bottom of the third to lead five runs to four. The Bandits went ahead in the top of the fourth scoring two but Tigers tied the game up in their turn at bat. The game went

into overtime with neither team scoring in the fifth and sixth digs. Millicent, however, blew the game apart in the top of the seventh, scoring four runs and unfortunately for Tigers, they did not have the answers at their turn at bat. The difference may have been that Tigers gave up a massive twelve base on balls as their safehits were very similar. After two and a half hours, Millicent had won their way into the Grand Final, winning ten runs to six. Top of the table, Naracoorte, were easily beaten by the less fancied, South Indians, in the Division three Preliminary Final. At the end of the third inning the game was evenly balanced, with South in front by a solitary run. But then the Indians batters went berserk, scoring five runs and then a further four in the next two inning. Naracoorte had no answer, belatedly only picking up a further two runs. South outhit Naracoorte fifteen hits to six, to stamp their authority on the game, winning easily, fifteen runs to seven. South now meet Central in the Grand Final. Tigers advanced to the Under 15 Grand Final when they set up their win against Federal in the first two inning, scoring eleven runs. They added a further five runs over the next three innings but the game was basically over after two. Federal scored one in the first and the third and three in the fifth. Tigers winners sixteen runs to five. They now play Central in the Grand Final. In the Under 13 Gold Preliminary Final, Central returned to the winners circle, defeating South Indians, fifteen runs to four. Central scored five runs in each of three of their four inning game. South managed three in the first and just the solitary run, a home run at that, in the fourth. Central play against semi final winner, Millicent, for the Premiership next Saturday.
