COVER - THE CASTERTON KELPIE MUSTER - CELEBRATING 20 YEARS The 20 year milestone of the Casterton hosted Australian Kelpie Muster certainly is a reason to reflect on what has been achieved. The first thing that comes to mind in just sheer ‘bloody hard work’ followed by passion and determination, but that’s just the ‘Casterton way’ which is interesting as it’s in direct parallel of our namesake, the kelpie. When this journey started back in 1995 we knew we would achieve great things if we all pulled together and worked hard, and we knew we had to work ‘bloody hard’ to set us apart from every other community, and that’s exactly what the Casterton community has done, work ‘bloody hard’. I don’t believe

we will never be able to count the number of individual volunteers and the incredible amount of hours that have combined to make this township the place is it today. But there is one thing we do know, is that because of each and everyone’s sheer ‘bloody hard work’ we have achieved amazing things. I recall the ground swell of change, within the community, after the government centralised many services and then the closure of the local abattoir losing a further 40 base wage earners from the community. Rural decline was gripping Victoria, including Casterton, so the ‘bloody hard work’ commenced. After a couple of public

meetings Casterton Project 2000 was formed with the big question – what sets Casterton apart from any other community that we can promote as being unique to us ? We knew as a community that we would struggle to get a major industry into town to boost the workforce so it had to be something unique. Red gums, Glenelg River, the light on the hill were all tossed around but didn’t grab the committee, as it just didn’t cut the mustard. I certainly recall the moment that one of our local vets, Lynne Nyebaum said she had been doing some research into the Kelpie working dog breed and did we know that it originated from Warrock Homestead. That was it. After much excitement and research, we certainly knew we were ‘onto something very special’ that we could call our own and that nobody could dispute or claim from Casterton. Casterton was undisputedly – the birthplace of the kelpie. Now the amazing journey and ‘bloody hard work’ really began. We did some brainstorming exercises with the community and mapped out a clear program, starting with some small steps and building on those strong foundations. The first was the 150 year celebrations for Casterton in 1996 and securing the world renowned Peter Corlett to do the bronze statue that now proudly stands in front of the Town Hall. A visit to Casterton is not complete for any child, whether a local or a visitor, without jumping on Kelpie’s back

for a ride. You just have to look at her shiny ears and smooth back to tell how loved she is! There was the rival between Casterton and Ardlethan over the ‘birthplace of the Kelpie’ – all further great promote for us as it hit the media and we got heaps of coverage to promote our town! In the end it was agreed by Ardlethan that Casterton was truly and ‘birthplace’ of the Kelpie breed and that they could call themselves the ‘Home of the Kelpie’. The Apex boys came on board with an idea that club member, Ian O’Connell thought would be a goer, so he worked with the club and under the co-ordination of Steve Crossley the first Casterton Working Dog Auction was held at the local saleyards in 1997. Of course none of us will forget page three of The Age newspaper in October 1997 when Casterton was proudly featured with most of the town in the mainstreet – a bull, fire truck and any assortment of interesting things including Penny Annett at 106 years as the oldest resident.

COVER - THE CASTERTON KELPIE MUSTER - CELEBRATING 20 YEARS FROM PAGE 4 I still can’t remember who won the $1000 up for grabs from the cement mixing truck, but of course you had to be in the mainstreet to collect it – it worked we got

them there!! In the meantime projects such as the development of the Kelpie Walking Trail were underway. Planning took time to work out the five separate ‘walking paths’ to include a river walk of various lengths and also a heritage walk – but we did it and it remains popular each morning for locals and of course visitors love discovering this hidden gem. The Kelpie Trail has a number of interesting ‘sculptures’ along your journey, all done in different medians by different Artists. But which one is your favourite – it might be ‘Man’s Best Friend’ at Ess Lagoon or perhaps it the clay tiles of George Haddon’s cartoon at the entry of Island Park. Or maybe the corrugated iron impression of Jack Gleeson down by the river or ‘On the Sheep’s Back’ proudly standing at the western end of the mainstreet ---- it doesn’t really matter they ‘re all beautiful. As things were visually changing in the mainstreet and around town with the cleanup of areas such as the Railway Precinct and Ess Lagoon, volunteers were also working behind the scenes to inject much needed economic growth back into the community. An audit of infrastructure was undertaken, with promotion anywhere and everywhere to try to get some ‘businesses’ back in the town for employment, yes the ‘bloody hard work’ continued. The commencement of Blue Hills Nursery by locals David and Karen Perry was perfectly timed, with them employing around 14 people at anytime, the business still exists today providing seedlings to plantation companies and the like. Of course in all this – the Kelpie Weekend in June was growing at a rapid rate with the introduction of the Kelpie Festival in 2001 to entertain the crowds that were coming to town for the weekend. I could go on and on - but the ultimate prize will be the development of the Australian Kelpie Centre right here in Casterton. This building has been a dream and we know it will become a reality just because of the sheer ‘bloody hard work’ over the last 20 years – council has purchased the land and set aside $1mil so now we just need the State or Federal Government to come in and partner with the community to make it a reality. We will get there, we always have and always will - with sheer ‘bloody hard work’- thank you to each and every one of you!!! On the Saturday, we will have the Kelpie Festival which hosts a range of events with the Kelpie Triathlon attracting a large number of entries from competitors who travel from all over Australia. The Triathlon consists of the Kelpie High Jump, Kelpie Dash and the Kelpie Hill Climb. We are looking at having online entries for competitors and you will still be able to enter on the day. The other popular events is the Kelpie Street Parade, Kelpie Pinball and the novelty events just to name a few. We have street stalls and local produce and merchandise available. It’s a fun family free day - for everyone to enjoy and bringing along their canine companions. On the Sunday we have the Working Dog Auction which demonstrates the unique ability of the Kelpie Working Dog. A farmers true friend and companion. The auction attracts buyers and vendors from all over Australia and has become the premier Working Dog Auction in Australia. LOVETT JOINS GLENELG SHIRE COUNCIL TEAM Heywood Gunditjmara man Troy Lovett is Glenelg Shire Council’s new Aboriginal development officer. Mr Lovett joined council’s community and culture team last month, a part-time role he balances with work commitments as a Koorie youth worker at Heywood’s Winda Mara Co-op. The council role aims to further develop relationships between the shire and the indigenous community. He aims to improve cultural awareness across the council, assisting with the implementation of the Glenelg Shire Council Aboriginal Partnership Agreement and Aboriginal Partnership Plan. Mr Lovett is currently coordinating council’s National Reconciliation Week festivities and will also assist with NAIDOC week celebrations later in the year. The position also coordinates the implementation of council’s indigenous traineeships. Mr Lovett is best recognised as an active community member and volunteer. He is lead dancer of the Winda Mara Traditional Aboriginal Dancers and Fighting Gunditjmara Aboriginal Dance Group, which have performed at some of the state’s biggest community celebrations including the Essendon Football Club chairman’s function, Ballarat Harmony Day, NAIDOC Week activities and the Ricci Marks Youth Awards. The talented sportsman is also a junior football coach, senior footballer and local basketballer. Mr Lovett said he was enjoying the transition into the council role. “I am looking

forward to the opportunities of engaging my community more closely with the council and its plans and vision moving forward,” he said. “It is an exciting time with the Budj Bim Cultural Landscape nearing closer to World Heritage Listing, providing never-before-seen tourism opportunities for our shire. “I look forward to seeing council and the indigenous community working closely to ensure these opportunities are realised to their full potential.”

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - ALL ABOARD THE FRIEND SHIP.. by Robbie Tansel I’ve just read about a study conducted by the University of Tel Aviv about friendship. The conclusion of this extensive study was that only fifty percent of the people we consider friends, think of us as friends. Essentially one out of the two people you identify as a friend, wouldn’t identify you as a friend. I’ve got to say that this finding freaked me out a little. The researchers surveyed people. If two people considered each other as friends this was termed reciprocal friendship. If only one of the two people considered the other as a friend then it was labelled unidirectional friendship. The study also found that 95% of people think their friendships are reciprocal. That’s a lot of people who don’t realise that half of their friends don’t really like them. One of the things this study has done is bring my levels of paranoia to an all time high. I’ve been staring suspiciously at all of my “friends” all week trying to work out if they are actually my friend or if I just think they’re my friend. Do they care about me at all or do they just tolerate me? Do they actually consider me an acquaintance or just a work colleague? I’ve been coming up with extensive ways to test the people I consider as friends

out. I spent a day making out I had a cold and seeing who avoided me. A true friend wouldn’t do that. I made up a dream and told my friends all about it to see if they would listen or if their eyes glazed over. Real friends listen to you talk about your boring dreams. I then asked a heap of my friends if they could loan me some money. Surely you’d only loan money to your friends. The truth of the matter is that I’m not the sort of person who needs lots of friends. In fact I’d say I pretty much stopped making friends about ten years ago. I found it difficult enough maintaining some sort of relationship with the ones I had without increasing the number. I’m a pretty busy person so finding the time to keep in touch with them all was actually causing me quite a bit of stress. But now knowing that I’ve lost half of my friends overnight, I kind of feel like I need to make some new friends. I’m concerned that it might even be less than fifty percent of my friends who consider me friends. The results of the study found that on average fifty percent of people’s friends don’t reciprocate the friendship, but presumably for some people it’s less than fifty percent and for others it could be much more than fifty percent. Maybe only ten percent of my friends consider me friends! I

have got a pretty abrasive personality. The truth of the matter is that I’ve forgotten how to make friends. I don’t know where you would find someone to be friends with. I haven’t been to the pub on a Saturday night for years but from what I’ve seen driving past, the people who are attending there now weren’t even born the last time I was there. I have older pairs of socks. I also don’t know what I’d be looking for in a friend. The last time I was looking for friends, I was looking for people who have low expectations, flexible morals and cope well with disappointment. To be honest I don’t offer much as a friend, and don’t like people to expect too much from me. Probably a person in a coma would be the ideal friend for me. They won’t ever ask me to help them move home. I can talk about myself all the time. There’s really no need to ever buy them a birthday present. Perfect. BREASTSCREEN RETURNS TO KEITH BreastScreen SA’s mobile screening unit is visiting Keith, to provide free screening mammograms (breast X-rays) for more than 650 local women. The screening unit will be located in the casualty car park of the Keith Hospital, Carinya Crescent. Breast screening began this week and depending on demand, will conclude in mid-June. This free government service is recommended for all women aged 50 to 74 years without breast symptoms. Local women who are eligible for screening will receive invitations over the coming weeks and new clients are also welcome to make a booking. Appointments can be made by phoning 13 20 50, and a doctor’s referral is not required. BreastScreen SA’s Promotions and Education Manager, Karen Woodcock, said the two biggest risk factors for breast cancer are being a woman and being aged over 50. “Further, nine out of 10 women who get breast cancer have no family history of this disease,” Ms Woodcock said. While breast cancer cannot be prevented, the best way to detect it early is by having a screening mammogram every two years. Screening

mammograms can detect most breast cancers, including some too small to be felt. “An appointment can take as little as 10 minutes, and our specially trained female radiographers are very sensitive to every woman’s needs,” Ms Woodcock said. “They will ensure the procedure is as quick and comfortable as possible.” Each woman’s X-rays are read by two, independent radiologists and the results are posted within 14 days. Most women who attend for screening are reassured that their mammogram shows no evidence of breast cancer. “One screening mammogram is not enough to last a lifetime,” said Ms Woodcock. “So if you’re a woman aged 50 to 74, have a breast screen every two years on the mobile screening unit while it’s visiting Keith to see what you can’t feel. The Friends of the Kathleen Millikan Centre help with activities such as excursions, reading, cooking, gardening and craft. Centre coordinator Tracey Gould said it was a rewarding role, ideal for people who were retired or enjoy spending time with small children. “Our Friends of the Kathleen Millikan Centre provide an important role at our service, assisting our staff to deliver high level early learning programs. Their assistance in the classroom ensures we have the capacity to go on excursions, providing our children with greater learning experiences outside the centre and engaging within their local community,” she said. “These volunteers don’t need to be connected to the centre in anyway. The only requirements are that you are fit, willing and able.” Ms Gould said local resident Sharon Gill had been a volunteer in various areas throughout the community and had recently joined as a Friend of the Kathleen Millikan Centre. “She has actively been a part of the lives of Casterton children for many years and we look forward to her continuing this with families of Kathleen Millikan Centre,” she said. TEMPT THE TASTEBUDS Pumpkin Bread 500g butternut pumpkin, peeled, chopped 2 cups self-raising flour, sifted 1 teaspoon fennel seeds 2 teaspoons dried oregano 75g butter, melted 1/2 cup reduced-fat milk 2 eggs, lightly beaten 2 teaspoons fresh rosemary sprigs Butter, to serve

Method Preheat oven to 180°C/160°C fanforced. Grease a 9cm-deep, 9cm x 19cm (base) loaf pan. Line base and 2 long ends with baking paper. Cook pumpkin in a saucepan of boiling, salted water for 8 to 10 minutes or until tender. Drain. Transfer to a large bowl. Using a fork, mash until smooth. Cool for 5 minutes. Add flour, fennel seeds, oregano, butter, milk and eggs. Season with salt and pepper. Spoon mixture into prepared pan. Using a spatula, level top. Sprinkle over rosemary. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes or until a skewer inserted in centre comes out clean (cover with foil if over-browning during cooking). Stand in pan for 5 minutes. Lift out onto a wire rack to cool. Serve with butter.

EVERYONE’S FAVOURITE VET As famous for his chiseled jaw as he is his veterinary skills, Dr Chris Brown has become a household name. First and foremost though, TV’s Bondi Vet is all about animals and their health and well being and despite all his sponsorship and media commitments Chris remains true to his love of veterinary science, still practicing as a vet. It all started for Chris when graduated from The University of Sydney with First Class Honours in Veterinary Science in 2001, working at a clinic in Sydney’s North Shore, as well as travelling to remote Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory to treat animals. Three years into his career, Chris was spotted by a talent agent while he was in a Mosman pub telling stories over a few beers. Chris began filming as the new vet on Harry’s Practice and his impact on the television audience was immediate, and he was soon nominated for a Logie award for “Most Popular New Talent” at the 2004 TV Week Logie Awards. He gained further TV experience on Burke’s Backyard, The TODAY Show and Talk to the Animals, as well as releasing his first book, The Family Guide to Pets (Murdoch Books). In 2008 Network Ten commissioned a new factual program Bondi Vet, chronicling the everyday adventures of Chris as he dealt with the characters and crises along Australia’s most famous piece of coastline. Now into its six series, Bondi Vet has seen Chris help countless animals in their time of need. Aside from life-saving moments, there are also those that are classified as more ‘life-experience’. Being man-handled by a man-hating pig in Fiji, lending a hand (and an arm) to an alligator with indigestion, receiving amorous advances from an 800kg bull and being asked to put silicon testicle implants into an emotionally insecure bulldog are just a few. Chris is an ambassador for Optimum, Medibank Pet Insurance and Assistance Dogs Australia, a charity that aims to increase the independence of people with physical disabilities. A forum is Portland on June 1 will help parents to set the right stepping stones for their child make a smooth transition to school. The forum at the Portland Secondary College will assist parents to understand what it means for their child to be school ready and what options are available if they feel their child isn’t yet ready for school. It is being hosted by the Stepping Stones for School project, an initiative of the Glenelg Local Action Group of Beyond the Bell and will feature children’s advocate and early childhood parent consultant Melinda Vander Reest from the Early Life Foundation. The project is funded through the State Trustees Foundation. Glenelg Local Action Group spokeswoman Anne Murphy said Stepping Stones aimed to improve the transition of children between kindergarten and primary school. Transitions worker Bernadette Tapscott is helping families to improve knowledge about their child’s school readiness. She also works with kindergartens and primary schools to improve the transition process and to identify any gaps. Ms Tapscott encouraged all parents of pre-school children to attend the forum. “It’s not often we get to hear directly from someone with as much experience and expertise,” she said. Ms Vander Reest is a passionate children’s advocate with more than 25 years of experience working with young children and their families. She

has Early Childhood and Primary training as well as a Bachelor of Special Education and an Advanced Certificate of Child and Family development. Ms Vander Reest has supported children and families with a wide range of needs and backgrounds from social/learning difficulties, school readiness, anxiety and impulsive behaviour as well as English as and additional Language. She has worked closely with other professionals such as psychologists, speech therapists and occupational therapists to assist all children to access programs and reach, and has worked as an early childhood parent consultant providing advice to parents of babies, toddlers and preschoolers. Ms Murphy said Stepping Stones was leading to informed change to improve transition processes. She encouraged parents to allow information from kindergartens and specialist support to be accessed by primary school. “It is important that this information is available to ensure every child is getting the support they need,” she said. “One of the learnings in Stepping Stones is around how to better get that information and timing protocols around enrolments to ensure children are ready to go to school.” The forum will start at 7.30pm at the Discovery Hospitality Centre at Portland Secondary College.

Calves are helping to shine a light on dairy industry careers through Dairy Australia’s innovative school program, Cows Create Careers – Farm Module. Cows Create Careers - Farm Module is a six-week program that aims to increase the awareness of dairy industry careers in a very hands-on way. Secondary students are educated by rearing two three-week-old calves at school and the school is provided with dairy industry curriculum for years 7 and 8 and years 9 to 11, at no cost. Since 2006 Dairy Australia has worked with thousands of students, teachers, farmers, industry advocates and communities through its investment into Cows Create Careers – Farm Module. Dairy Australia’s Industry Capability Program Manager, Tracy Lloyd, said the program started in 2004 with dairy farmers in the Strzelecki Lions Club in Victoria and nine Gippsland schools. With support from Dairy Australia, Regional Development Programs, dairy farmers and sponsors, the program has now grown to over 216 schools across Australia with 9,949 students completing the program in 2015. “Cows Create Careers – Farm Module is a program that builds awareness of dairy industry careers – from teaching students about educational and vocational pathways, to profiling the diverse

range of professional careers in the dairy industry,” said Ms. Lloyd. “By bringing calves into schools, students have fun learning about the different skills required in the dairy industry.” The program has gained strong support from dairy farmers and advocates across Australia. Last year alone volunteers gave 1,652 hours of their time across 23 Australian dairying regions. The National Centre for Dairy Education (NCDE) also plays an important role by being an educational link for the schools. Locally, the project is funded by Dairy SA & SA Dairy Industry Fund and receives additional support across the state from local companies Devondale Murray Goulburn, Provico, Genetics Australia, Total Result Ag Consulting, La Casa Del Formaggio, Beston Pure Foods and the Grant District Council have continued to support the program in the Mount Gambier region. “Volunteers play a vital role in encouraging and supporting students and their career decision making,” Ms. Lloyd said. “The program has dedicated volunteers who have knowledge of the industry and links to education and employment sectors.” Upon completion of the program, students and teachers will be recognised at a Presentation Finale where prizes are awarded to the winning schools and students. Local Sport NETBALL Keeping it in the family It is a rare feat for players to pass the 200 game mark for one club and in round five when Casterton Sandford took on East Gambier, two of the Cats finest did just that. Trictia Cleary and Madalene Cleary both marked their 250 game milestone for the club – a celebration made all the more special with the duo being mother and daughter .They have played side by side, and mum Trish has coached Madalene, and is still her A Grade coach as we speak. Madalene even turned the tables and coached her mum in 2014 and ’15 when she was the club’s A Reserve coach. Trish and Madalene have also played alongside Jade – their daughter and sister, respectively. Both have been invaluable to the club – not just as players of quality and consistency but as long standing club coaches, umpires and committee members. While it did not bring a premiership, the club’s surprising rise to the 2010 A reserve grand final, saw the mother-daughter combination fall just shy of premiership glory playing in the same team – the one goal loss to raging favourites West Gambier, no doubt a highlight for the duo. Trish’s resume as a player for the Cats is second to none. She started with the club in 1998, after enjoying success at Sandford, and has racked up numerous club and association individual accolades over the journey. She was the Cats’ best & fairest in A Reserve in 2002 and 2008, as well as winning the past five club titles. She won the same accolade at A Grade level three years in a row from 2004 and also again in 2009. The ultra-consistent utility was named the best in the Western Border Association at A Reserve level in 2008

and ’12, finishing runner-up in 2002, ’11 and last season. The accolades are no surprise to any opponent with Trish being a dynamic mid courter, a reliable goaler and one of the smartest and hardest working players in the association. Since joining the Cats, there is barely a week that goes by without Trish being named in her side’s best and the longer her career has gone, the more regularly she seems to have appeared as her side’s best. Since becoming an integral part of the Casterton Sandford Netball Club, Trish has played A or A Reserve, and is still a vital cog in the 2016 A Reserve lineup. She also represented Western Border at Masters level. Off court, she has been a committee member at the Cats for many a season, including the role of assistant secretary, and is the club’s current coaching coordinator. Trish has coached many a side at Casterton Sandford, including junior and senior teams, and is the current coach of the club’s A Grade side. Trish is also a C Grade badged umpire and spent nine years in the role of Western Border records officer for nine years, taking on all these many and varied roles over her 250 gamer journey with the support of her husband peter and children Jade, Madalene and Sean. Madalene is building an impressive resume of her own in her 250 games with the Cats, starting with Casterton Sandford in 2003 in the 13 & Under competition, missing only one season since joining the club. Madalene has been part of many a Casterton Sandford junior final campaign and in 2006 she finished equal best and fairest for the club at 15 & Under level. Madalene is a genuine utility, starting her A Grade career

as a tight checking circle defender and now starring as a strong positioning goaler. Her consistency and work ethic have seen her recently selected in the 2016 Western Border Netball Association B Grade side for the 2016 SA Country Championships, where her versatility will no doubt come in very handy. Like her mother, Madalene has also been as active off the court and she has on and in 2016 she is the C Grade netball coach, a social committee member and the netball representative on the Casterton Sandford Football Netball Club executive. She has been a regular netball committee member and has coached across a number of grades.

DRIVER MENTOR PROGRAM SET TO LAUNCH AT THE CINEMA

A group of South West TAFE students are about to experience their first trip outside Victoria and at the same time will promote our struggling local dairy farmers on an international stage. Eight students from TAFE’s Certificate III in Hospitality course are leaving for China on June 10 to work at the Beijing Top Wine and Cheese Show. The students will be presenting cheese and wine matching seminars with the help of an interpreter over three days at the event and will be highlighting several local cheeses. A group of students attended a similar show last year but it has expanded in 2016 to include cheese and wine matching and for the first time TAFE will have its own stall at the event. “It’s a fantastic opportunity to work at a huge international event like this,”

course coordinator and hospitality teacher Maria Gordon said “None of the students have been outside Victoria so this will change their whole perspective of travelling,” Ms Gordon said. “It could also open opportunities to do 0placements or further food tours in China in the future.” The wines are chosen by Australian wine companies at the event but the TAFE team is keen to promote locally-made cheeses. “We’re just fine-tuning the offerings now and want to promote local cheeses as much as possible. The students will explain to the Chinese people the basics of white and red wines and how to mix them with different cheeses,” Ms Gordon said. The students will also tour the Great Wall of China and enjoy a duck banquet.

The Southern Grampians Shire Council, in partnership with VicRoads, is set to launch an exciting community engagement program called the ‘L2P – Learner Driver Mentor Program’. The L2P program, which sees experienced drivers from the local community act as mentors to help learner drivers build-up the required 120 hours of driving experience, will be launched at the Hamilton District Skills Centre this Thursday, May 26, at 1pm. Research shows learner drivers who have 120 hours of supervised driving experience are a third less likely to crash in their first two years of solo driving. The L2P Learner Driver program targets young people, under the age of 21 who have their learner’s permit, and would have difficulty gaining their 120 hours of compulsory experience because they lack access to a vehicle or supervising driver. The program supports learner drivers with up to 7 professional driving lessons, a program vehicle and a volunteer mentor. Southern Grampians Shire Mayor Cr Peter Dark says the introduction of the L2P program in Shire will address some of the barriers to transport, employment and social disadvantage that young people face in rural and regional areas. “Attaining

a driver’s licence opens many doors for young people and is an integral part of gaining independence and employment opportunities and this is particularly true in regional Victoria”. “Council is pleased to support a program that, with the help of volunteers from the community, can have a life-changing effect on many young people in Southern Grampians” Mayor Dark said. While the L2P program helps young learners build up their driving experience, mentors also benefit from building positive relationships with young people and feel a sense of connection with the local community. Volunteer mentor drivers are provided with the required training and legal checks prior to inclusion into the program. Young people are matched with fully licensed volunteer mentors and have access to a sponsored vehicle, which they can use to get supervised driving experience. L2P is free for eligible young people and is funded by the Transport Accident Commission. Break the dry noodles into quarters. Add the noodles to the soup mixture. Simmer, uncovered, for 1 min. Add the choy sum, chicken and half the spring onion to the soup. Simmer, uncovered, for 2 mins or until the noodles and choy sum are tender. Ladle the soup into serving bowls. Sprinkle with remaining spring onion. Serve with lime wedges.

NEW TAFE COURSES ON OFFER South West TAFE is branching into a new area and is serving up some hot and tasty options with a series of new hobby, leisure and lifestyle short courses. From making ice cream to making curries, TAFE is entering into a flourishing new market with lifestyle-oriented courses designed to give people the skills they need to do the things they love. The new courses are being offered in partnership with local industry experts and while many will focus on indulgence in favorite foods and drinks, they will also offering everything from mastering i-Phones to setting up a B+B. The new courses are expected to attract a different group of students to TAFE and supplement TAFE’s core short course offerings that range from Responsible Serving of Alcohol and business to first aid and OH&S. Short course coordinator Steve Hoy said the new hobby, leisure and lifestyle courses were a great example of collaboration between TAFE and industry and would appeal to people with a passion for the good things in life. “It’s brings industry into TAFE and it brings people to TAFE who might never have been here in the past,” Mr Hoy said. “We’ve got great facilities and great staff and industry experts to deliver the courses so students will learn more about the things they’re passionate about,” he said. The courses have been chosen to meet local demand and to capitalise on the skills of local experts. Mr Hoy said TAFE was developing a “massive list” of short courses starting with ice cream making, knife skills, making macrons, Spanish and Mediterranean cooking, making bread, mastering your iPhone, and bee keeping. “We will continue to develop courses during the year and want to hear from businesses with a particular skill set that customers might like to learn,” he said. Further

course options to be considered include languages and cultural etiquette and a range of programs with a hospitality theme. “We’re still doing all the traditional short courses, such as RSA, licensing, high risk work, motorcycle training and licensing, but believe there is broad scope to offer the community new hobby, leisure and lifestyle options,” Mr Hoy said. The short courses vary from three hours up to a day or longer if required. South West TAFE is making it easy to enrol and pay with a new online system which allows people to book themselves or purchase gift vouchers for friends for either specific courses or as a general voucher so they can select a course. Robbie Tansel has always been a little bit of an idiot. Even as a newborn his parents knew there was something not quite right. As an infant, they dropped him once or twice and to be honest, it seemed to actually improve him. Robbie grew up to be the worst kind of idiot: one who thinks he knows everything and always wanting to express his opinions. In 2009, Lifestyle1 made the mistake of responding to one of his emails offering to be a regular columnist. Since then, they haven’t been able to get rid of him. Every week he sends in a page of waffle and they dutifully paste it into a blank spot where they could be generating advertising money. The International Village Idiot of the Year judging committee have noticed Robbie’s many achievements since then and encouraged Robbie’s

What happens if you are new to driving and your recently acquired vehicle breaks down on a lonely rural road where there is no phone coverage? An essential part of regional and rural living is the ability to maintain and understand your motor vehicle. About 30 young people were lucky enough to attend a free workshop recently organised by the District Council of Grant and delivered by the Barry Maney Group, which included some purchasing and maintenance tips as well as emergency fixes. The workshop, held at Barry Maney Group’s Jubilee Highway West Car Service Centre, explored how to check oil, water and air filters, tyres and pressures, how to jump start a battery, bumper to bumper under vehicle inspections including brakes, and how to change a tyre, irrespective of the make or model of the vehicle. Participants, male and female, were aged between 15 and 24 and included a number of new migrants and some disadvantaged youth who haven’t had hands on access to the information before. Most of the participants had never seen underneath a car or knew how to change a tyre before the workshop. The Barry Maney Group, who provided the staff, expertise and venue for the event, have an ongoing relationship with the District Council of Grant as a major sponsor of the Council’s Geared2Drive program. Geared2Drive is a learner driver program to support young disadvantaged drivers become

For some reason, people have grown to like Robbie (or possibly they just feel sorry for him) which has led to Robbie deciding to publish a book of his articles to tie in with being voted the 2015 Village Idiot of the Year. Robbie will be presented with his Village Idiot of the Year trophy at his book launch at the Mount Gambier Library on Thursday 26th May 2016 at 7:00pm. That is if he actually manages to be there. Traditionally he’s not particularly reliable. His co-author Damian Bradley will definitely be there though. Robbie’s writing style is quirky, topical and humorous, sharing his thoughts and opinions on just about everything” explains Kristi Leamey, Mount Gambier Library Community Engagement Coordinator. “In his latest piece he questions; “why does every kid need a tattoo these days? They can’t figure out what they want to do with the next week of their life, but they know that they are going to love having that barbed wire tat around their bicep or butterfly on their butt for the next 60 years! On the flipside “Are airlines being discriminatory for not allowing staff to have visible tattoos?” Robbie’s book “The Village Idiot of the Year” will be available for sale and signing for $20.
