Community fundraiser aiming at million dollar mark Relay For Life is an amazing sight of colour, excitement and passion as hundreds of people take on the challenge of keeping their team’s baton, and symbol of hope, moving around the track for 19 hours. Since 2003, the Limestone Coast community have generously supported this event which continues to help people and families affected by cancer, through Cancer Council SA’s work in the community. Over their 13 years participating in Relay, the Limestone Coast community has raised almost $927,000. This year they are hoping to crack the $1M mark with over $45,000 already raised, which will help support the 25 South Australians diagnosed with cancer every day. Local Teams Coordinator, Maxine Tufnell explains a bit more about the event. “It’s not too late for teams to join as any amount of fundraising will help, and the event is just as much about the camaraderie and coming together as a community.” Relay For Life is a great opportunity for communities to recognise and celebrate those who have overcome cancer or are undergoing treatment, those who care for people with cancer and to celebrate the memory of those who have lost their battles.

“Relay For Life is for a serious cause but it’s not all serious at Relay! Throughout the night there are activities to keep you on your feet, awake and celebrating life to make the 19 hour relay go quickly,” Maxine added. The Limestone Coast Relay For Life will be held on Saturday 5 – Sunday 6 March at the Blue Lake Sports Park. The general public are invited to attend the free community event and are encouraged to walk with the registered teams on Saturday from 1.30pm until midnight, and can return after 6am on Sunday. There will be free music, entertainment, children’s activities, remembrance ceremonies, health forums and food and drink available. New for 2016 will be presentations provided by local health professionals on a range of topics with the focus on prevention and self-care. Some of the region’s best known entertainers will be on hand to entertain, including Ben Hood, Fox Array, Em & Al, Any Other Sunday, and Painless providing a mix of musical styles to enjoy, as well as the Shimmy Jewels belly dancers. The popular ‘Miss Relay’ competition will return this year with guest compare Pam Pudney. A male from each team is invited to frock up, re-name

themselves, and like any beauty queen they’ll have to mingle with the crowd, make a brief address, try to raise funds, and impress the judges. LOCAL Drive to beat driver fatigue in the Limestone Coast A regional road safety message has just been released that looks and reads a little like the iconic car advertisement, the catchy “football, meat pies, kangaroos and Holden cars” from the 1970s. The Beat Driver Fatigue message won’t be appearing on our TV screens but will be printed on pastry bags sourced from a number of bakeries, food and retail outlets in the Limestone Coast from as far and wide as Kingston to Mount Gambier and Port MacDonnell in the south. Using a concept previously employed by tourism, Limestone Coast regional community road safety officer Rob Forgan approached a regional distribution business, J O Berkefeld Pty Ltd to see if they would be interested in collaborating in a road safety project addressing fatigue, the silent killer on our roads. Berkefeld’s immediately saw the potential to deliver a dual message to thousands of local and visiting motorists and their families and together with Mr Forgan began a project with the working title “Pie Drive!”. “Our goal was to encourage people to take a break, take time out from driving and also to stop awhile to enjoy the Limestone Coast in safety,” Mr Forgan said. “Together, we created a new map printed on a pastry bag of the Limestone Coast and Western Victoria, a simple map with key towns and destinations with relevant icons identifying places to experience. We didn’t want to overlook the kids either so we included some of the popular playgrounds like those at Keith on the Dukes Highway and at the Millicent Domain that are real circuit breakers on long and fractious family road trips.The other message was reminding people just what a fabulous destination the Limestone Coast is with its coastline, beaches, fishing, 4 wheel driving,

caving, heritage, sporting facilities and wineries.” The bag’s release is timed to support the Motor Accident Commission’s current “Don’t Let Fatigue Beat You” campaign that has been extensively promoted at strategic locations on our regional road network. “Fatigue is involved with over 86% of serious casualty crashes in South Australian rural areas and we are keen to support MAC with their message to stop, take a break, refresh and arrive at your destination in one piece,” Mr Forgan said. “While the main take away message is to get a good night’s sleep before a long trip, we hope that people respond positively and take it easy on our roads. To take time out to enjoy a snack in any of our regional centres or towns; to explore our region’s diverse attractions, to return home safely and come back another day to holiday or in the case of us locals, to explore our own backyard. We hope that our tips are digested and taken on board, just like the football, meat pies, kangaroos and Holden cars advert did.”

LOCAL Science forum exposes young minds to infinite possibilities

Scientists of the future were exposed to infinite possibilities in the science sector by attending the annual National Youth Science Forum (NYSF). Laura Kelly, 17, from Bayview College was selected by the Rotary Club of Portland Bay for her outstanding commitment to furthering her studies in the science/medical field. Two hundred and twenty two students, all entering year 12, came from all over the world to Canberra to explore opportunities and career pathways in science. Laura said the entire experience was unbelievable, particularly meeting a diverse range of students. “I met so many young people my age from all over Australia, Fuji, South Africa, Zimbabwe and New Zealand” said Laura. “There were seven special interest groups to select from and as medicine was quickly filled I received my

second choice, Earth Environmental Science. “I was able to discover through practical work in the field more about the possibilities of working in this specialist field. “I also had the opportunity to be introduced and speak to leading scientists working for the Murray Darling Basin Authority.” The NYSF encourages more females to enter the male dominated field of science and this was exhibited by a number of lectures held throughout the 12 days focusing on diversity in science. Laura would like to pursue a career in Science and looks forward to completing Year 12 this year. Laura would like to thank Rotary Club of Portland Bay, Bayview College and her family for their support throughout the year.

LOCAL Popular opera set to delight festival goers One of the world’s most wellloved operas will be performed in Penola as a fitting celebration for the 25th year of the Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival. The popular Festival will be held over four days in May from 1922, and will include nearly eighty events in over forty venues. The production of ‘The Mikado’ promises to be one of the Festival’s must-see events, with SA’s Gilbert & Sullivan Society teaming up with Co-Opera to present the production. A satire of British society - in particular government, the monarchy and social class in general – it was written when everything Japanese was in vogue, thus is clothed in the exotic trappings of Japanese culture. It may look like Japan, but it was Britain heavily disguised, and with its modernist touches, strikes a chord with contemporary society. Organiser Peter Muller said ‘The Mikado’ is a well - known and loved Opera the world over. “ We are fortunate to have Co-Opera present ‘The Mikado’ as part of the Festival this year – it’s a popular choice,” he said. “The Co-Opera cast and crew love coming to this district, and it is the one region that they have visited continuously for more than twenty years, which is an excellent reflection on our audiences and community,” said Mr Muller. “It will be a fitting celebration for our 25th Festival year,” he said. The evening marks the Opening Night of the Festival, with the prestigious John Shaw Neilson Acquisitive Art Prize announcement being held at the Penola High School beforehand. Students at Bayview College are creating their very own café culture including its very own “laneway.” Australia’s cafe culture is proving a hit with a growing number of young people and it seemed timely to introduce a space where the students of Bayview College can come together to bring healthy meals from home to eat whilst sharing conversation with friends. Over the school holidays the space was refurbished by Bayview College staff along with Parent and friends to give it a fresh lift. Tables and chairs were purchased and art hung on the walls, courtesy of the fund raising conducted by the P&F. A team of students, on a rotating roster will provide support and access to microwaves, fridges, food warmers and sandwich presses. Kya Duro, 16, is excited by the prospect of the new café space

being opened. “It’s great the school is providing this area for the students. I know my friends and I are looking forward to bringing a range of healthy foods from home to heat up,” concluded Kya. Shelby Bridgeman, 16, is equally excited. “When the weather gets a little colder it will be great to hang out with my friends in a warm space, instead of a normal classroom.” The laneway was opened up on the first day of school and is already proving to be extremely popular. Café will open in the coming weeks.

LOCAL Casterton builds foundation for early reading Laying the essential foundations for learning how to read is the focus of a new early literacy program in Casterton. Three staff members from Casterton’s Kathleen Millikan Centre are participating in PreLit, an early literacy preparation course which provides early childhood teachers with the tools necessary to teach pre-literacy skills and concepts to kindergarten pupils. Staff will also complete the second stage, MiniLit, which focuses on teaching reading skills to children who are at risk of falling behind in their early stages of primary school. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Max Oberlander said the program was instrumental in reducing the risk of “later reading failure”. “Early learning builds the foundations for a higher aptitude for learning in later life,” Cr Oberlander said. “Council is focused on ensuring our youngest residents are provided with the best possible start to their education. “Reading helps build essential communications skills, mastery of language, improved concentration, more logical thinking and ultimately

recognition that reading is fun - a passion that will last a lifetime. “As a parent it is essential that this important work continues at home. Reading to your child daily is one of the most important things you can do to prepare your pre-schooler for academic achievement later in life.” The literacy program focuses on shared story group reading with a focus on teaching phonemic awareness and basic letter sound knowledge. Staff will complete the early literacy training later this month.

LOCAL MOUNT GAMBIER LIBRARY POWERING AHEAD January has been another great month for the solar system on the roof of the Mount Gambier Library. Thanks to the large 57kW solar system the Library has used 40% less electricity than the same time last year. Since the system was switched on in late May 2015 it has produced over 52,670 kWh of electricity. That’s enough to power an average sized South Australian home for over 10 years.“The decision to put solar on the roof of the Library is part of Council’s commitment to reducing its impact on the environment, and promoting local renewable energy” said Environmental Sustainability Officer

LOCAL Calling all skateboarders A call is out to all skateboarders who want to play a part in designing the upgrade of the Market Square Skate Park in Naracoorte. Skate park designers, Convic are running a creative design workshop on Wednesday, February 24, from 4pm to 5.30pm at the Naracoorte Town Hall. The workshop will involve a short skate film, a visual presentation of skate parks around Australia, questionnaires, picture voting and a design workshop giving everyone the opportunity to draw and model the new skate park. Convic would love your input so come along and help create a skate park for your community. “This is a fantastic opportunity to have input into the new design of the skate park. It’s important that people who use the skate park attend this workshop to ensure that the upgrade meets the needs of the community,” Naracoorte Lucindale Mayor Erika Vickery said.The information received at the workshop will be used to finalise the new design of the Market Square skate park and to support funding applications. Construction of the new skate park is expected to

Streets surrounding Market Square have been upgraded. Globe and Fern Streets and Flinders Lane have been sealed and stormwater drainage and kerbing have been implemented. Some of the works have been funded from a $100,000 grant from the Premier’s Local Government Stimulus Program and matched with $100,000 of council’s funds.

Method Preheat the oven to 190°C/170°C fan forced. Grease an 8cm-deep, 19.5cm square cake pan. Line with baking paper, allowing the paper to overhang on 2 sides. LOCAL Local dealership earns another accolade

I haven’t shared my email lately, mainly because I haven’t received anything very interesting. This one got my attention though. “Dear Robbie, I read something in one of your articles recently that I consider to be ageist, showing your prejudice against old people. I can’t remember what it was but I just wanted you to know that I don’t approve of your ageism. Di from Digby.” Ageist? Ageist?! You’re calling me ageist? You silly old, Volvo driving, hat wearing, twenty kilometres an hour less than the speed limit driving, hip breaking, nanna nap taking, adult nappy wearing, gopher driving cow. I’ve been labelled sexist. I’ve been called a racist. Now I can put a big tick next to ageist. I’ve only got psychotherapist and hypnotist left and I’ll have the whole set! In all honesty, to suggest that I’m ageist indicates that you think I pick out old people for special derision and dislike. That’s simply not true. I don’t pick out old people for particular dislike and singling out. I like old people just as much as I like all other people. Admittedly I don’t like any people very much. The point is I don’t single the oldies out for special treatment. I don’t really like anyone. The truth is I’m just not that fussed on humans. It must have been a golden time over the last couple of hundred years as we watched humans achieve remarkable things and get smarter. Scientific discoveries, epic voyages, inspired literature, technological advancement. Inspiring. I’ve found it equally frustrating over the last ten years as humans have gradually gotten less intelligent. We are unevolving as a species. You only have to watch a few minutes of I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here to see the evidence of this process. Let me explain the ways that this show proves we are less smart. Reason one. In this program people stand around and talk about nothing much of use. Occasionally they eat

Sometimes in life timing is everything and it was for Nic Lattin. When he decided it was time for his family to return to his hometown Mount Gambier from Darwin, he happened to bump into his former employer Paul Gazzard and Paul has a job tailor made for the experienced car industry expert. Carlin & Gazzard was planning to take on the Chrysler Jeep Dodge franchise and saw Nic (pictured right) as just the man for the job. It was in September 2014 that Carlin & Gazzard took on the new franchise and in almost 18 months the growth in the sector has see the dealership awarded Regional Dealer of the Year in Category C for Western Central region - the category covering small regional dealerships in South Australia, Northern Territory and Western Australia. Carlin & Gazzard dealer principal Peter Gazzard attended the presentation evening earlier this month and was pleasantly surprised to be called to the podium to accept the Western Central Region Regional Dealer of the Year. “Being our first full year of having the Chrysler Jeep Dodge dealership we were extremely pleased,” Nic said. “The Chrysler Jeep Dodge brand has been steadily growing in the South East and it’s nice to receive

some weird animal or bug, or stand in a bucket of something equally weird. You shouldn’t be allowed to just film any random weird stuff and put it on telly. There is nothing that is actually interesting or entertaining about the programme and let’s remember that the fundamental purpose of television is to entertain. Stupid. Reason two. The program is called, “I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here”. For those who are unsure – like the producers of the show – a celebrity is a person who is well known. There’s only about three of these people we’ve even heard of: Fev because he used to inspire my articles by peeing in public places and Akmal Saleh who is entertaining except when you put him in an African jungle. Oh, and Jo Beth Taylor who hosted a television show that was actually entertaining, Australia’s Funniest Home Video Show. Reason three and four that people are demonstrating dropping intelligence levels are that someone actually continues to allow this program on television and people presumably are watching it. One thing they don’t do which I appreciate is displaying people’s tweets regarding the show on the screen while they are watching. I have no interest in knowing about what other people who are watching a show are thinking while they watch. I also don’t watch television to do some reading. It’s like watching a foreign film. If I want to read something I’ll go and get a book. Quite clearly I’ve overdosed on my grumpy pills. I’m like a grumpy old grandfather. Oops, ageist again. LOCAL AFL legend set to headline charity golf day Former AFL star Robert `Dipper’ DiPierdomenico will exchange a footy for golf clubs when he takes part in a major Portland District Health fund-raiser on March 4. The former Hawthorn champion, Brownlow medallist and colourful media personality will be special guest at the 2016 Portland District Health Charity Golf Day. Funds raised at the event will again be used for the redevelopment of PDH’s Women’s and Children’s Health Precinct in north ward. PDH CEO Chris Giles said the facility will be a dedicated area for the provision of women’s and children’s healthcare. “PDH now has specialist staffing to provide a safe maternity and children’s healthcare service and is seeking to match this with modern contemporary facilities for the Portland and district community,” Ms Giles said. The annual charity golf day has been a great success raising $60,000 over the past three years. Money raised at previous events has been used to purchase vital equipment for the emergency department and the redevelopment of various departments including palliative care and cancer units. Ms Giles said DiPierdomenico would be a popular and entertaining guest. DiPierdomenico will be involved in the 13-hole Ambrose team competition and will be guest speaker at the evening dinner. LOCAL Folk singing legend to headline festival Australian folk singing legend Eric Bogle has been booked to headline the 2016 Camperdown Robert Burns Scottish Festival set for May 20-22. Zucchini & Feta Cake Olive oil, to grease 80ml (1/3 cup) olive oil 1 brown onion, halved, finely chopped 100g pancetta slices, chopped 55g (1/3 cup) pine nuts 2 garlic cloves, crushed 150g (1 cup) selfraising flour 3 medium (about 350g) green zucchini, ends trimmed, coarsely grated 4 eggs, lightly whisked 60ml (1/4 cup) milk 30g (1/3 cup) shredded parmesan 100g feta, crumbled Freshly ground black pepper Mixed salad leaves, to serve

Method Preheat oven to 180°C. Brush a square 22cm (base measurement) cake pan with oil to grease. Line the base with non-stick baking paper. Heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Add the onion, pancetta and pine nuts, and cook,

stirring, for 5 minutes or until onion is soft and pine nuts are toasted. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute or until aromatic. Sift the flour into a large bowl. Add the onion mixture and zucchini, and stir to combine. Make a well in the centre. Use a fork to whisk together the egg, milk, parmesan, feta and remaining oil in a jug. Season with pepper. Add to the flour mixture and stir to combine. Pour mixture into prepared pan. Bake in oven for 30-35 minutes or until top is golden and a skewer inserted into centre comes out clean. Set aside in the pan for 5 minutes to cool slightly before turning onto a wire rack to cool completely. Cut into squares and serve with salad.

LOCAL Fundraiser nets $15,000 Louise Adams took to the stage at the Leukaemia Foundation fundraiser at the South Aussie Hotel earlier this month and that was good news on two fronts. Firstly, it meant the crowd was treated to a set of half a dozen of the talented singer’s songs and also meant the fundraiser had hit its ambitious target of $15,000 – the mark the event had to raise to get the X Factor runnerup to the microphone. The headline act of the fundraiser was Louise’s husband Andrew Burchell, who was shaving his beard to help raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation, and more particularly, the Wilke family, with young Jesse fighting lymphoma. Andrew is the first to admit, the beard shaving was initially a promotional stunt to help Louise

progress through to the X Factor final. “I had said to people that if Louise got to the grand final I would shave my beard,” Andrew said. “I figured it was a good way to get people interested in voting.” When he heard about Jesse’s battle, though, it seemed like actually putting the loss of his trademark beard to better use made sense. “Louise has such a high profile at the moment and it makes sense to use that to do something good which is why we started getting this event together,” Andrew said. The $15,000 target seemed lofty, given the event was put together in about a fortnight but as always the Mount Gambier community was quick to jump on board. “The community is just so generous,” Leukaemia Foundation

community relationships manager Samantha Rothall said. “It is really quite overwhelming the support that people show.” St Bees Catering donated the food, with a number of auction items, which yielded $5000, also donated by Dale Cleves, SMB Civil Social Club, Baxter Hire, EFM Health Club, Morambro Creek & Jip Jip Wines, Baylev Seaside Accommodation. And in the end, Andrew wasn’t the only one that let with some hair missing – Shane Perry jumped on board as well prior to the event, raising money by offering to have his back waxed. Entertainer Ben Hood also ended up on the waxing table after his attempts to drum up more money for Shane’s wax, saw him jokingly suggest that for another $500 he

would get his chest waxed. The crowd of 160 people, at the $50 a head fundraiser, quickly dug deep and it is safe to say ben has a new appreciation for what women go through with some of their beauty routines. Salon 7’s Janene Lightbody and Belinda Scott donated their time to wax Shane and Ben and to shave Andrew’s beard, and, just as it was from time to time during the family’s X Factor journey, it was little Frankie, Andrew and Louise’s daughter, that stole the show. “I was worried she might not recognise me without my beard,” Andrew said. The Leukaemia Foundation also had a hugely successful fundraiser at the weekend with the Rockin’ The Rail karaoke competition organised by Sam with her committee that included Tania Von Stanke, Sarah Barney, Belinda Scott and Shannon Pearson.

International opera stars set to return with some new faces It was a huge coup for Mount Gambier when Christine Judd managed to turn her overseas holiday into a stunning night of entertainment at the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre with two world renowned opera singers. And the friendship she forged with Australian born Michelle Buscemi and Mattia Campetti has also seen a relationship between the talented duo and this region and they are returning again to a one night only performance, school and public workshops and they are also adding tenor Giancarlo Monsalve to the bill, fresh from a 2015 that saw him performing on the major stages of Europe and the United States. Giancarlo will be heading to Mount Gambier after stints on stage in Memphis and New York. Limestone Coast Opera is the small committee behind this growing concept, which Christine is confident will continue to blossom and develop into a major annual

event. The trio, which will be performing arias, duets and other songs, will grace the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre stage on Saturday, March 19 at 7.30pm, and will be accompanied by accomplished pianist Stefano Teani, who is also a composer. And while Michelle and Mattia always committed to a return trip this year, the fact the couple is tying the knot in Australia, certainly meant they would definitely be in the country to be able to again wow Limestone Coast audiences and to also hold a series of vocal workshops for this region’s talent. The couple has also enlisted the services of much sought after vocal coach and tenor Gary Nardella, who is based in London, to assist with the training sessions. There has also been an exciting addition to the concert program with 10 local singers taking to the stage with the world class performers to perform the well known aria Amigos Para Sempre (Friends for Life). “Michelle and Mattia have committed to coming back for the next five years so the future is looking fantastic,” Christine said. “They want to give a helping hand to young people, just like they were given a helping hand.” The duo is running similar programs in Italy. Michelle is originally from Melbourne and has performed on return visits home before, but to get this calibre of soprano, and her talented baritone partner Mattia, is an opportunity rarely presented in a regional centre. Adding Giancarlo to the mix is just icing on the cake. Born in the Chilean city of Valparaíso, where he began his studies of fine arts at the School of “Bellas Artes” in that city, Giancarlo began his musical studies on 2001 at the Conservatory Izidor Handler Viña del Mar with soprano Nora Lopez Von Vriessen and tenor Mario Barrientos. LOCAL Rabbit control in focus Natural Resources South East invites all landholders to a free breakfast and information session covering best practice rabbit control. Information session topics will include rabbit biological control RHDV/calicivirus, best practice guidelines on baiting, ripping and fumigation, baiting options and current regulations. Natural Resources South East Authorised Officer David Robertson said that there had been higher than usual rabbit populations reported this season. “With an increase in numbers and rabbits under seasonal stress, this creates ideal conditions for control measures to be effective,” Mr Robertson said. “Rabbits can affect our land in a number of way, from pasture and crop damage to reduced stocking rates and soil erosion issues. Land owners need to know current best practice information to deal with this problem. “This breakfast and information session is an opportunity to hear in an informal environment what is going on around the region and learn about the rabbit control services available.” The free breakfast and information sessions will be held in Natural Resources South East 279 Smith Street Naracoorte on Wednesday, 17 February at 7:30am, and Fisher Shed at the Lucindale Field Days site on Thursday, February 18, at 7.30am. LOCAL Celebrating pets & raising funds for a much needed upgrade

It’s all about your pets this Sunday when the South East Animal Welfare League holds its annual fundraiser – Paws Around The Blue Lake. Running from 10.30am to 2pm, there is a $5 registration fee to take part in the walk, with a raft of other activities on the archery field lawns opposite the cactus garden, including pet photography, K9 Fashions on the Field and other animal related stalls. There will also be onsite catering, making for a fun, family day out. Paws Around The Blue Lake is so much more than a fundraiser though, with the league seeing it as a vital opportunity to

celebrate the role pets play in our lives. “It’s about celebrating animals, enjoying our animals and socialising with other people who love animals as well,” organiser Anneliese Bates said. Given the recent incidents of animal cruelty at the South East Animal Welfare League, organisers are even more focussed on the need to promote responsible pet ownership as well as raise much needed funds to improve security. “The Paws Walk Around the Blue Lake is the SEAWL’s biggest opportunity to ensure these incidents don’t happen again,” the SEAWL’s Connie Bates said. “By

raising money for the Rebuild the League Campaign, we can create a safe, secure and modern facility that the animals in our care and the South East deserves.” The league relies heavily on fundraising with 70 percent of its finances coming from its own efforts. It is the biggest animal shelter outside of Adelaide, and the 40-year-old facility is falling apart. “The South East deserves a shelter that reflects our commitment and love of animals and it is time for both the Mount Gambier City Council and the District Council of Grant to make the redevelopment of the SEAWL a

priority,” Connie said. And while it is a fundraiser for these much needed facility upgrades, the Paws Around the Blue Lake is a fun event for the whole family and a chance to meet and interact with other animal lovers from across the region. The South East Animal Welfare League is open Monday to Friday 9-11am and 4-5pm and weekends from 9am-12noon. Local Sport SOFTBALL Mount Gambier to host State Junior Championships this weekend The Mount Gambier Softball League, with the support of the City of Mount Gambier, will this weekend host the best junior softballers from around South Australia as they battle to be crowned State Junior Champion for Under 13, Under 15 and Under 17 competitions. Following the success of the even held here in 2014, Softball SA again turned to Mount Gambier when it needed a host for this year’s event. “Our facilities are up there with the best in the State, and all the visiting clubs commented on this and how much they enjoyed coming here to such a well run and well supported event,” said championship director Di Humphries. There will be many State level juniors players coming to the tournament, and Mount Gambier boasts four of its own in the Under 17 team that will play under the guidance of State Under 17 assistant coach Tanya Hood. Fresh from winning Batter of the Tournament and also making Team of the Tournament (SA Under 17s), Georgia Hood will be on the mound for Mount Gambier to continue on with the amazing form she has shown so far this season. Hood has dominated in recent years and will give Mount Gambier a significant edge with her pitching and batting skills. Other players to watch include State representatives Jenna Burston, Imogen Walker and Montana Millard (all of who will be featured as part of our extensive softball coverage in issue 619). All three have represented South Australia at a State level in their respective age groups, and will bring experience at the top level to the team. Spectators are welcomed to come and watch a terrific event at Blue Lake Sports Park - games kick of on Saturday at 8:30am and continue throughout the day, with finals being played on Sunday. SAILING Rivol Bay comes to life with sailing lessons Earlier this month, Rivoli Bay was awash with 27 Year 4 to Year 6 students from Beachport Primary School, Rendelsham Primary School and Kangaroo Inn Area School for Rivoli Bay Sailing Club’s Discover Sailing Day. An initiative of Yachting Australia, Discover Sailing Days is an introductory, fun, safe, accessible-based sailing program. The free sailing day allow participants who may never have sailed before to attend a supervised sailing event with Yachting Australia qualified sailing instructors. The advantage of Discover Sailing Days is the host sailing club provides all the necessary boating equipment for the two-hour sailing experience. Participants just need to bring their enthusiasm and sense of adventure. During the day students experienced both the thrill & excitement of steering small dinghy boats. Students gained basic sailing skills and experience, which they can build on for future training sessions. The aim of Discover Sailing Days is to provide a fun and enjoyable experience for anyone who wants to try the sport of sailing. BOWLS Millicent fundraiser

BOWLS Legacy fundraiser looming The Lower South East Legacy Group is pleased to announce that the 35th Annual Legacy Bowls Day will be held at the Mount Gambier RSL & District Bowling Club on Sunday, February 28. As usual it will be a men’s fours competition commencing at 9.30am and will be opened by Member for Mount Gambier Troy Bell MP. Around 100 bowlers from across the South East and Western Victoria will participate in this year’s Legacy Bowls Day. This is a major Legacy fundraising event for the Lower South East Group and every year many Mount Gambier businesses and residents provide the organising committee with trophies and prizes for the event. The day also features raffles of goods donated by local businesses. Legacy was recently named Australian Charity of the Year and helps the dependants of more than 80,000 veterans. In South Australia Legacy supports more than 7000 widows and wards with more than a quarter of these in the country, including more than 200 widows and wards in the Lower South East. Money raised from the bowls day will be spent on a range of support for Legacy widows and wards in the Lower South East, such as social outings, assistance with utility bills, home maintenance and other special needs. In addition, specific grants are provided to individual widows where government support falls short; this particularly applies to the

large group of Legacy widows who do not receive any benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs despite the fact their late husbands were returned servicemen. Over the previous 34 years of the Legacy Bowls Day more than $200,000 has been donated to Legacy to assist in the support of Veterans Widows and Families in the Lower South East. This year it is expected to donate a further $4500. Invitations are extended to all bowling clubs in the Lower and Upper South East and Western Victoria and any interested bowlers to enter teams for this men’s fours competition. Earlier this month saw the Memorial Hospital Day at the Millicent Bowls Club. A day of remembrance for Bell Werchon and Daphne Chapman as well as raising much need funds for the Millicent Cancer Support Group to distribute toward the betterment of the Millicent and Districts Hospital. President Steve Carnellor welcomed the 28 bowlers and non-bowlers before handing the club over to the sponsors of the event, Brian and Dawn Atkinson. Splitting into four teams of fours and four teams of triples, the format for the competition was two games of eight ends each with lunch in between. This was followed by afternoon tea, raffle draws and the old favourite, the “Chocolate Wheel”. When the scores were tallied Derek Bowering announced the winners with 3rd place going to and Phill Dowdell (skip), Rob Chambers, Alby Cecotti and Gavin Walker (pictured above bottom); second prize to Brian Atkinson (skip), Manny Vanderhorst and Dawn Atkinson (pictured above centre). The team of Terry Barnes (skip), Colin Pye, Margaret Johnson and David Reichelt (pictured above top) took first place.

WEEKEND HIGHLIGHTS • Kongorong spearhead Alex Hentschke took 5/66 in Barber Shield action agaisnt his former club South Gambier. Hentschke’s 10th over was most devastating when he dismissed Jacob Parham and Daniel Loupos in successive balls before finishing the over with the wicket of Robbie Drenthen. • Cox Bros opener Kingsley Clark smashed 134 for North Gambier in an innings that included 14 fours and seven sixes. • Yahl’s Jarrod Sanders had a day out with the bat in Crouch Shield, compiling 170, in an innings that saw him clear the boundary three times and hit 20 fours.
