LOCAL Strength in numbers eases the mental health stigma There’s a local bloke called Noel Bull and he’s prepared to share his story. Noel is passionate about helping other people overcome the weight of mental health to achieve their farming dreams for themselves, their families and sometimes their parents.Farming in your Spare Time was born and published in October last year for the first time. Noel’s goal was to raise awareness of mental health confronting farmers and raise ‘some’ funding for beyondblue. “We only needed to sell 144 to cover the cost of printing because everything else was donated, that would raise some awareness locally, but if we could sell 250 we could donate the money to beyondblue,” Noel said. More than 1300 sales later Noel’s project with the help of his immediate family donated $10,582.90 to beyondblueAustralia. The family couldn’t

believe the response and the feedback has been overwhelming. “Never did we imagine the calendars would end up like this, not only have they raised money for a great cause, but probably more importantly are the discussions they have provoked and awareness they have raised, which has spread far wider than the sales,” photographer, desiger & marketing chief Astyn Reid said. “It was amazing to hear close family and friends start opening up about their own experiences, let alone strangers from across the country who started sharing their stories through social media and emails to Noel and myself. We never imagined the calendars would have such a positive impact.” Farming in your Spare time is a beautiful collection of rural photographs, seasonal advice for working on the land while

having a full time job and heart warming stories have made this product a true collectors keepsake for generations to come. This year the 2016 Farming in Your Spare Time calendar will feature new stories from Noel, as well as new contributions from family members; a different perspective to farming in your spare time. A brand new portfolio of photographs from Astyn Reid will feature on every month. Noel is the second son for John and Cecilia Bull. His father died on May 4, 1968, from a heart attack. Their mother leased out 300 of their 460 acres and managed the rest with the help of their neighbours. Upon leaving school, Noel and his brothers, Leo and Anthony, took back the 300 acres and brought 550 Merino Border Leister cross ewe lamb with the help of a local agent. Noel is a bloke true to his word and when he fell seriously ill he started to compile a record of do’s and don’ts, seasonal jobs and his opinion on farming issues to help his two sons run the farm if Noel’s recovery was not successful. Noel did recover and decided to use his notes to help other blokes and their families manage their farms, particularly during times of adversity. Today, Noel and wife Tracy, sons Mathew, David, and their partners; along with brother, Leo, wife Karen and their family manage over 1550 acres and run approximately 400 breeding cows, 250 yearlings and 500 fat lamb producing ewes in their spare time because everyone of working age also has a full time job. beyondblue was Noel’s charity of choice because of the mental health issues facing families on the land, including his own. Tragically

Noel’s father suffered from depression and back in those days help wasn’t easy to find. Cecilia was over 40 with four children under six and tried to deal with this alone. Two people very close to the Bull family have also suffered a mental illness which has sadly resulted in suicide. beyondblue’s work is aimed at achieving an Australian community that understands depression and anxiety, empowering all Australians, at any life stage, to seek help. beyondblue raises awareness, reduces stigma and ensures people have access to the information they need to support recovery, management and resilience. “I’ve had the idea of this calendar for along time but it took the support of my family and friends to get me putting pen to paper,” Noel said. “I would like to think that my small contribution makes a difference within family families. With Astyn Reid on board, Farming in your Spare Time has turned out to be a beautifully photographed and professional publication. I hope

COLLECTED STUPIDITY Does anyone have a Delorean?... by Robbie Tansel I enjoyed the recent reminder about Back to the Future’s greatness. This of course came about on October 21 2015, the day when Marty McFly visited the future in Back to the Future II. One of the things I enjoyed was the fact that their 1985

predictions for the year 2015 were so wrong. We can look back at them and shake our heads at their silliness. I hope we look back at ourselves in the year 2015 in the same way in the not too distant future. Surely we have reached one of the stupidest times in all of history. What makes it even worse is how advanced and clever we think we are.This afternoon I walked into a local shop that is proudly displaying stickers on its windows advertising the fact that free Wi-fi is available in store. We can’t even fathom how unnecessary and stupid that is at the moment, because we’ve all been conditioned to think we need Wi-fi wherever we are. We think it is vital that we are able to update Twitter, look at photos of what our friends are eating, and view a map of the store on our phone at all times. It’s not. We don’t need that. Why do you really need Wi-fi when you’re in a shop? You are in the shop to purchase something, aren’t you? Look around the shop, pick out what you want, buy it then go home to your

family. If you want, play with your Wi-fi when you get home. I would appreciate it if you would not walk around the shop I’m trying to shop in staring at the screen of your phone. People who walk around like this normally walk slowly. You will therefore be in my road. Even worse, you will be in my road with no ability to even realise it. If I happen to be standing looking at something, you might walk into me which puts me at risk of injury. You might walk into a display, toppling it over onto me, again causing the possibility of injury. Are you starting to see the possibility for danger? Imagine if this happens around the glassware section. We’ll have a new saying. “Like a person walking around staring at their phone in a china shop”. Sorry bull. You’re no longer needed. I’m not sure what this shop is really hoping for anyway. Here is how I would be most likely to use Wi-fi in their shop. I would find an item I wanted to buy and then compare the price to other shops online. I would also see how much I could purchase the

same items for on Ebay. Chances are I would be able to find it elsewhere for cheaper and leave the store. Just for the benefit of the marketing guru in Sydney who came up with this wizzbang idea, I don’t know that there’s a great deal of future in selling free Wi-fi at your shops. Remember when you used to go down the street (Monday to Friday, nine to five or, Saturday nine to twelve) and you’d forget one of the items you needed to buy? You couldn’t ring home on a mobile phone to double check. You’d just have to hope for the best. And the world kept spinning. While I’m having a grizzle, why is it that when I turn on the three major television networks, I can watch a show about people renovating a house, people singing or fat people exercising? If I want to watch chubbas exercise, I’ll go to the gym. If I want to watch a singing competition, I’ll go watch some karaoke. If I want to watch someone pick out tiles…someone just shoot me, please! Someone use your imagination and create a new comedy for crying out loud. What are all the actors going to do when we all have our own reality show? Put on 50 kilos, start picking out bathroom tiles, or learn to play the guitar I guess. Maybe there could be a reality show about out of work actors who don’t have a job because of reality shows. Or how about a reality show where people have to compete to come up with a show I’d actually like to watch. Anyway, I know, I’m a dinosaur who needs to get with the times. Method Preheat oven to 180°C. Brush a shallow, square 18.5cm (base measurement) cake pan with melted butter to lightly grease. Line the base

and 2 opposite sides with non-stick baking paper, allowing it to overhang. Heat the oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. This spring we have been busier than ever, and being the largest nursery in the region, and only nursery in Mount Gambier, we have almost completed our expansion of the Limestone Coast Advanced Trees part of the business and the new gift shop area is packed full of ideas for the gardener, non gardener and, of course, Christmas gift giving ideas. All of our shipments of garden giftware, outdoor furniture, birdhouses, wall art and much of the ranges I found on my travels. Our huge pre-Christmas sale starts today with up to 70% off giftware, glazed and terracotta pots, wall art, statues and ornaments and water features. With reclaimed teak birdhouses from India, to wrought iron and cast iron ware from within Australia and statues from Indonesia, the range is overwhelming. Remember, too, that much of our stock is handpicked from small batches made by developing and poor countries, so many items are one offs and we will never have them again. A great gift idea for that someone special, safe in the knowledge that no one else will have them. The Pot Shop

section is still undergoing a transformation with a new container of pots just landed and being added to the new sales area as the days roll on more and more Christmas stock is being put out. You can lay-by now for Christmas and leave picking up until as late as Christmas Eve if you wish. A new shipment of A Grade teak outdoor furniture with special Sunbrella upholstery and special foam, that does not retain the water when you sit on them, so no having to move cushions in and out on your outdoor furniture. Our 2016 range of outdoor tables in travertine and marble, cast aluminium, PVC, German wicker with three year warranty, as well as we have expanded our own range of reclaimed teak furniture with new chairs and benches. Teak is, of course, the premier outdoor furniture timber, with high oil content and has a lifetime warranty. A new shipment of Kubu (real wicker) has just come in too and we have added to this range a two seater bench to add to our already comprehensive range of garden benches, trees surround seats and outdoor swing seats. These blend well with our own imported ranges of furniture to offer the widest selection in the Limestone Coast and Western Districts. If you would like a new setting for Christmas, don’t leave it too late as all of our containers have landed and been unpacked. We are hoping to have most of this on the website as soon as possible for ease of viewing for those unable to come in. We can freight throughout the readership area and right across Australia on most of our giftware and furniture, so don’t stress if you can come in to the store and browse. by AIDS affected orphans in Zimbabwe. TEMPT THE TASTEBUDS Wholemeal, sultana & seed scones 1 1/3 cups wholemeal self-raising flour 2/3 cup white self-raising flour 30g butter 2 tablespoons unground linseeds 65g (1/3 cups) sultanas 1 tablespoon caster sugar 250ml (1 cup) reduced-fat milk Self-raising flour, extra, to dust Extra milk, to brush Low-fat ricotta, to serve Jam, no added sugar, to serve Method Preheat oven to 230°C. Sift the combined flours into a medium bowl. Return husks to the flour mixture. Use your fingertips to rub the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add the linseeds, sultanas and sugar, and stir to combine. Make a well in the centre and pour in the milk. Use a round-bladed knife in

A sunny Saturday morning greeted entrants in this years Monaros Out West event, which for this year was based in Mount Gambier, at the end of last month. Car enthusiasts flocked to the dealership of OGR Holden to view Holden’s most loved muscle car. Participants enjoyed showing their pride and joy and after lunch at the Western Tavern, they enjoyed an afternoon tour to the Tantanoola Cave. Also on the itinerary was a dinner at the Presidential Motel and on Sunday a cruise around Mount Gambier and district, stopping at some of the areas main attractions including Feast’s Car Museum at Port MacDonnell. Boneham Aged Care Services redevelopment COVER Boneham Aged Care Services leading the way in aged care Millicentâ€™s Aged Care Services has undergone a major redevelopment to ensure its residents are receiving the best care possible. The project comprised 40 additional aged care beds, significant refurbishment of the existing 50 beds and upgraded kitchen and laundry. The opportunities for improved efficiencies in operating costs and staffing levels, as well as improving the amenity of the facilities for both new and existing residents were realised.

A new main entrance and central avenue joins the new with the existing rooms, and gives all residents good access to the new Activities Lounge, Hairdresser, Consulting and Therapy Rooms, as well as the existing common facilities including the Activity Hall, and improved access to the popular Courtyard Cafe, which is open to the public. The design considers the Eden Alternative principles, a philosophy which aims to place decision making

as much as possible in the hands of the residents, especially around the level of activities, and interaction with other residents, the staff, families and the wider community. Bedrooms are small clusters and Dining Rooms set up for small groups. Reported benefits include reduction in medication usage, improved resident wellbeing and improved staff retention. In this regard, the design is ahead of its time, with the improved efficiencies and access to a wide variety of community facilities providing the flexibility which is necessary to meet the current government drive towards consumer directed care in residential care. The new building is complementary in scale to the existing buildings to create a unified and cohesive building form across the site, but has contemporary aesthetic. The bedrooms are large and have full height bay windows, which provide additional sitting space, connection with the landscaped gardens and courtyards, and high levels of natural light right through the grey South East winters. There is a secure sensory garden for planned wandering, with arbor, rotunda and raised garden beds. The whole building has its own unique ambience, radiating a quality that will provide residents with a high level of care and families with peace of mind that loved ones are enjoying in the later years. The murals have also been a popular addition to life at Boneham Aged Care Services. Healthy free range eggs right on our doorstep Sustainable farming has long been a focus of Paul and Kylie Serle and while their Tantanoola property is known as a prime lamb operation, it is fast establishing a reputation as free range egg producers. The couple purchased its first Chicken Caravan and 450 chickens in March this year and have just started running a second caravan. The Chicken Caravan won Farm Invention of the Year in 2012 and givens chickens 24 hour access to pasture allowing them to consume a range of seeds, insects and plants resulting in beautiful fresh eggs with the highest nutrition and taste possible. The new project has not just been important for improved soil condition but also adds diversity to the 2000 acre farm, which is key to the ongoing sustainability of any primary production operation. “It does give us business diversity with another enterprise,” Paul said. It was in 2013 that Paul was a Nuffield scholar, affording him the opportunity to travel extensively overseas as he focussed on sustainable, biological

and regenerative farming. “Paul has always been into biological type soil products and not using chemicals if we can get away with it,” Kylie said. “A lot of the biological regenerative farmers we visited overseas were utilising chickens to influence soil health.” The concept is relatively simple - the chickens scratch around looking for insects and weed seeds and, of course, input into soil is important. It has been a steep learning curve for the couple though. “With our lamb we market through stock agents or direct through saleyards and abattoirs,” Paul said. “But all of a sudden we were dealing with cafe owners and shopkeepers.” The Serles are dealing with more than 200 dozen eggs a week and that is only set to increase with the addition of the second caravan. Kylie has taken on the bulk of the Eco Pasture Eggs operation to allow Paul to concentrate on the prime lamb business and she is determined to showcase the benefits of their newest product. Research into the health benefits of the eggs alone are astonishing, including a third less cholesterol; 25 percent less saturated fat; two thirds more vitamins; double the omega 3 fatty acids and triple

the vitamin E. Kylie realises it sounds a little over the top but the chickens are happy. “They are happy out there grazing and they are very, very quiet,” she said. Having locally produced free range eggs also taps into the growing paddock to plate movement. “Again when we were overseas it is becoming more and more popular to actually know your farmer, where your food is coming from,” Paul said. The couple is promoting their eggs, in conjunction with Goode Paddock Eggs, at the Mount Gambier Farmer’s Market and has also received good support from She’s Apples; Lennons on Lake Terrace and Rosaville Deli in Mount Gambier and Fosters Foodland, in Millicent. Cafe Melzar, which has a strong focus on locally produced organic and sustainable produce, Tiger Hotel, in Tantanoola, Mac’s Hotel, Ann’s Place Bed & Breakfast Robe Rosaville and Gambier West Delis are already customers, using the Eco Pasture Eggs in their lunch and dinner menus.

THE CHICKEN CARAVAN STORY Chicken Caravans is actually an Australian invention success story. Chicken Caravan was founded by Daniel O’Brien. Daniel wanted to create sustainable farming systems to produce nutritious and sustainable organic produce. In August 2010, Daniel bought 2000 day old chicks to start a dream of having a free range egg farm. At the time he didn’t have any of his own moveable sheds, so Daniel with the help of a friend worked out a design criteria, and went to the drawing board. During this time he began looking for a partner with adequate organic pastures for a larger operation for their new business ‘Oxhill Organics’. They soon contacted Chris Eggert from Wauchope NSW, and after talking over the possibility to set up a certified organic free range egg farm, a partnership was formed. Since then it has been a journey of innovation and learning as they develop new ways of sustainable farming with a goal of producing a more nutritious and flavoursome organic egg. Daniel went on to build the first Chicken Caravan in December 2010. After building 6 Chicken Caravans for his own farming operation, other farmers began asking if he was going to start selling these ‘Chicken Caravans’. So in November 2011 Daniel, his dad Robert and Ash debuted the Chicken Caravan at a farming expo. 2014 saw the development of the flat packed Chicken Caravans and these were field tested in Western Australia, South Australia and Victoria. In December of 2014 the first Chicken Caravan was exported from Australia to New Zealand and the first USA sales were made.

LOCAL Building the foundation for a career in music For Mount Gambier based band Cornerstone, the road from formation to launching their first album has been a relatively short one but for band founder Nathan Jenner, it has been a long journey to translate his passion for music into a debut album. Nathan is the guitarist and vocalist for the alternative rock group, which also includes drummer Chris Newell and bass player Jesse Berkefeld. Cornerstone’s 10 track album was officially launched this Wednesday and the boys are hopeful this will launch even more – radio airplay and a successful music career. Cornerstone is influenced by 90s rock and shares its style with the likes of

Nirvana and the Foo Fighters. The songs are intensely personal and are the culmination of a gigging career that, for Nathan, started as a 14 year old, as part of a duo with Darin LeGray, doing Nirvana covers. He has been writing songs since those teenage years but it was when he hooked up with Chris and Jesse and started jamming just before Christmas last year that he became convinced of the quality of the songs he was writing. It was as an 11 year old that Nathan started his musical journey in earnest, when a mate was taking guitar lessons and he started learning the basics from his friend. There have been a number of bands since then as Nathan faded in and out of the local music scene. Now 36, Nathan and his Cornerstone band mates are proof that persistence does pay off and it is never too late to realise your dreams. Nathan has always had good feedback on his originals and when he was living on the Gold Coast

in his 20s, he played some originals on an old busker’s guitar one night, outside a 7/11, and attracted a crowd

of around 30 young music lovers and had made the busker $80 in just 25 minutes. In the end, when embarking

on recording the album, the biggest issue was culling the almost 150 originals he has accrued over his two decade musical journey to the 10 tracks for the debut offering. And while the album is a testament to the talent and hard work of Nathan, Chris and Jesse, it also showcases the talents of local producer, Tom Williams, of BadAnimal Productions. The Cornerstone trio is hopeful the album will see their profile significantly raised and they are hoping to tour as part of promoting their music nationwide. Social media has helped in lifting the profile already with You Tube, Facebook and My Space all allowing Cornerstone to get their music out there. The guys went for some time without a band name and in the end, they settled on Cornerstone, which is also the name of one of the tracks. “It just seemed to fit,” Nathan said. “The Cornerstone is the first stone, it is about who you are.” The album cover is Nathan’s father Errol Jenner in 1965. “He had a bike gang back then that haunted the beach area of Glenelg in Adelaide, and called themselves the Bayside Rebels,” Nathan said. “He has been a total Cornerstone throughout my whole life and this pic was too good not to use.” The album is available through a number of online options including iTunes; Google Music Store; 24-7; Tradebit; Shazam; Amazon MP3; GreatIndieMusic and SoundExchange, while locally you can pick up a copy of the CD from Dale Cleves Music, the Whistling Cat Cafe or by contacting the boys via their facebook page for just $20.

Local Sport TRIATHLON Mount Gambier Triathlon Club offers a fun day out When many of us think about a triathlon, it is a bridge too far – a sport we equate with super fit athletes who live and breathe exercise and nothing else. But it doesn’t have to be that way and the Mount Gambier Triathlon Club is looking to change that perception and attract new participants to the sport. Not every triathlon is the tough Coolangatta Gold or gruelling Hawaiian Ironman – there are varying distances; team events and it is just a chance to shake off the cobwebs and exercise. On Sunday, November 22, the local club is offering first timers to dip their toe in the water, literally, with a fun, untimed come ‘n’ try day with interested competitors needing to enter online by November 19. The family fun day offers a short course; challenge course and two kids courses

starting from 3pm, with registration from 1.30-2.30pm with no entries taken on the day. There is free pool entry on the day for competitors and supporters with prizes and giveaways for the fun event. The short course is a 100m swim, 3km bike ride and a 1km run; the challenge course is a 200m swim, 6km bike ride and a 2km run; while the kids 7-9 year old course os a 50m swim, 2km bike ride and a 500m ride and the kids 10-13 year old course os a 100m swim, 3km bike ride and a 1km run. HILL CLIMB Gazzard wins another nailbiting hill climb

Local legend Peter Gazzard has done it again – winning the 10th anniversary Legend of the Lakes Hill Climb in dramatic fashion. Gazzard’s past couple of victories have all been in dramatic circumstances with mechanical issues almost thwarting his past campaigns and this year was no different. This time it was the radiator springing a leak on Gazzard’s final run of the two day competition but fortunately he held on for a .05 second victory over long time rival Kevin Mackrell. “It was a really good competition so I am really happy to have won,” Gazzard said. “There’s always some drama but it was a great battle and it’s great to have won it again.” There were three Limestone Coast based drivers in

the top six with Simon Feil finishing in third behind Gazzard and Mackrell, with Damian Brand in sixth. Kevin Weeks put in another consistent performance for yet another top five finish, finishing fourth. Warren Nietz rounded out the top five. Gazzard’s winning time was 50.96 and was on his penultimate run. The local hero seems to thrive on pressure, producing the title winning run after Mackrell had momentarily snatched the lead. Mahalia Fox and Bo’az Manser have been performing on Limestone Coast stages since they were both quite young but their performance this Sunday at the Old Mount Gambier Gaol is a first for the now married duo. The 4pm concert is their debut album launch – a project that has been on the agenda for a couple of years but has taken some time to complete. It is an album of originals, with the popular duo, performing under the band name Fox Array, working with three drummers – David Hutchesson, James Owen and Beej Barker. Mahalia and Bo’az were overwhelmed by the pre-order support their album project received – the pre-order support proving critical in completing the album and ensuring it could now be released.”It was incredible how many people were prepared to support it even before they heard it,” Bo’az said. Brandon Lee will be the support act at the November 15 album launch, which will also include a barbeque and a chance to chat with Mahalia and Bo’az after their performance. Tickets for the launch are $10 and it is a family friendly event. The album, titled The Oak Tree, is a 12 track offering of all originals, written by either Mahalia, Bo’az or together. The album title is deeply personal and refers to the tree planted in memory of the couple’s first son. “The album has taken new meaning,” Bo’az said. Bo’az produced the album, with help from Mahalia, who has started to learn the behind the scenes side of the music industry, with the album cover artwork by Trent Holbrook. “He was really able to put himself in our shoes and it’s great,” Mahalia said.
