Award winning business celebrates third anniversary When Sharon Tuffnell made the decision to open Bare Necessities Lingerie in November 2012, it was all about filling a void in the local market. The closure of several long standing businesses in the community saw no specialist outlet offering high quality lingerie, sleepwear, hosiery and shapewear with the expertise of experienced fitters. Sharon had the expertise in the industry and the desire to succeed and three years on Bare Necessities Lingerie is celebrating its 3rd Birthday and its now an award winning retail lingerie business catering for ladies of all ages and a variety of lingerie needs. Bare Necessities Lingerie also stocks swimwear and post-surgery and mastectomy products and fittings, working directly with the regional health services to support women post-surgery. After being nominated last year for a NAB Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Small Business Award and in the same category for this year’s Influential Women in Business Awards, Bare Necessities Lingerie broke through at this year’s Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Business Awards in the small business category (pictured below) – an impressive effort on the eve of clocking up its third anniversary. “I was humbled to be nominated and grateful to the person who nominated me,” Sharon said. “I would also

really like to thank the awards sponsors and the chamber.” Providing trusted, quality brands, many which are not available elsewhere in the region, is part of Bare Necessities Lingerie’s point of difference, as is the expert customer service provided by Sharon and Sheryn Wilson. Sharon has combined time honoured business practice, including advertising in print media, to embracing new marketing ploys, like using social media, especially facebook to attract a new clientele and a website isn’t too far away either. But at its heart, Bare Necessities Lingerie is all about what the customer wants and needs. Bare Necessities Lingerie’s product offering has expanded over the 3 years from core, best-seller basics in standard sizes, to include a wide range of fashion and seasonal items, and an expanded range of sizes, and Sharon ensures she is always aware of what is coming up on the community calendar, including debutante balls, school formals, gala and racing events so that she can ensure she was just the right stock in store when it’s needed. Bare Necessities Lingerie currently boasts two staff – Sharon, her experienced retail assistant Sheryn, and her entry level casual Crystal who works Saturdays and over the busy Christmas period with a view to training another staff member for the demands of 2016. Thinking outside the square to support customers is part of that plan. For example, when a customer is not able to attend the store for a fitting, Bare Necessities Lingerie offers an in-home fitting service, which includes regular visits to customers in aged care facilities and the Bare Necessities Lingerie range and customer service sees it with a loyal customer base extending right throughout South Australia and into South West Victoria. Having lived and worked in the local community all her

life, Sharon knows the value of being community minded in all aspects of business. That’s why Bare Necessities is so willing to get involved with local support groups and events such as Wonderland in Pink, The Pink Party, Helping Handbags, Breast Cancer support group, Mount Gambier Cancer support group and Relay for life and Sew Prem. Bare Necessities Lingerie has also recently become involved in the Uplift Project and The Share the Dignity project as a collection point for both groups, recycling old bras and breast prosthesis to those less fortunate than us in Australia and overseas, and collecting sanitary products for women in our region suffering from homelessness

LOCAL Scholarship commemorates 25th year with dual winners

This year marked the 25th time the Trisha Flett & Sally-Jane Allen Sports Scholarship was awarded with 43 young South East athletes having received assistance over that time. That number now sits at 45 with basketballer Brenna McKay and netballer Olivia Dukalskis sharing the honour at the 2015 presentation. Each year the nominations are assessed by a group of the region’s PE teachers and each year it is a tough task to choose a winner or winners. There were 10 nominees for the 2015 scholarship and they certainly did not make the task easy for the 2015 panel of judges. In the end, it was Brenna and Olivia that secured the assistance provided from the scholarship fund and sponsors Squashbrook and Sportscene Mount Gambier. The scholarship fund was set up following a fundraiser, after the girls’ tragic deaths in a 1990 car accident, which saw the community give generously to allow the two families to set up the memorial scholarship. And like the two girls the scholarship commemorates, the 2015 winners are both multitalented when it comes to sport. It has been a huge couple of years for Brenna on the basketball court and the netball court. Last year she captained the SA Country Under 16 team to the gold medal at

the Australian Country Championships and at the Australian Championships Brenna was named in team of the tournament, ranking her in the top ten players in her age group in Australia. This year she was part of South Australian team that won a silver medal at the Under 18 Australian Championships – the State’s best result ever. On the netball court, she was part of the Western Border 17 & Under team that won the SA Country Championships, catching the eye of Australian assistant coach and Thunderbirds coach Michelle den Dekker along the way. Brenna was also named the Under 21 players of the year for Western Border and was selected in the 2015 Team of the Year. From high jump to jump shots, from freestyle to free passes, Olivia has an impressive resume across athletics, swimming, basketball and netball and she shows no signs of slowing down. Netball has been the focus in 2015 with Olivia being part of the bronze medal winning 15 & Under South Australian Secondary Schools State Netball team; also picking up silverware as part of the Western Border Netball Association 15 & Under SA Country Championship winning team; the Tenison Woods College netball team that won the Waverley International Netball Championships and the Under 17 South East Regional Academy netball team that won the recent South Australian Regional Championships. Next on the agenda is the Tenison Woods College US basketball tour and Under 17 State netball trials. LOCAL New mayor for Glenelg Shire Newly elected Glenelg Shire Mayor Max Oberlander intends to use his 30-years of business experience to help drive new investment in the region. Portland-based Cr Oberlander was elected at last week’s Statutory Council Meeting, replacing Cr Halliday after 12 months in the Mayoral robes. Cr Oberlander, who was elected as a councillor in 2012, said it was important council worked as a “unified to team” to help drive the local economy and attract new investment. “It is an honour and privilege to have the opportunity to provide strong representation for the Glenelg Shire,” Cr Oberlander said. “I am supported by a passionate and hardworking team of councillors who together have a developed a clear strategy for the future of this great shire which I want to continue to drive. “I look forward to being a strong voice and advocate for our community to ensure our region can continue to prosper.” Cr Oberlander worked in senior management in the local timber industry until his retirement in 2008. He and his wife Chris are dedicated volunteers with the local Lions Club and have two children and four grandchildren. Cr Oberlander said he would continue to work tirelessly lobbying for council’s priority projects. “Attracting new investment and industry, marketing our great tourism assets and attracting investment in our key shire projects are at the heart of my vision for this

next term,” he said. “It is vital that we continue to lobby for funding to fix our key freight roads to ensure our export industry can continue to prosper and that our smallest communities are supported with the right resources. “The opportunities ahead of us are limitless and I will work hard, as a united team, to ensure this region continues to grow.”

LOCAL Renovation project doubles as educational tool The Doorways to Construction Schinkel Street duplex renovation project in Mount Gambier was officially launched last week. This project is essentially a partnership between the Construction Industry Training Board, the “Building

Trades” Doorways to Construction Program based at Grant High School, TAFESA and Housing SA. Students from Grant High School, Mount Gambier High School and Tenison Woods College will be involved in the renovation with TAFESA (Mt Gambier) providing the trainer and RTO. The project provides students with real world opportunities to get involved, gain experience and develop skills in construction trades. Students will complete tasks including second fix carpentry, timber frame construction, systematic demolition, plasterboard instillation, painting, concreting, tiling and cabinet installations. Plumbing and electrical services will be completed by other contractors. This project has run previously with great success

in Adelaide and was attended by Richard Megaw, Doorways to construction Coordinator/Trainer from Salisbury High School, who is a veteran of over 25-plus Housing SA retro fits. The draftsperson responsible for the initial drawings of the project was former D2C Building Trades student from 2009, Ben McKinnon.

LOCAL Celebrating a decade of Uni SA graduates The region’s university students are in the throes of final assignments and end of year exams and while Uni SA staff are also busy with end of year marking and planning for 2016, they have another project in the works – the Uni SA

Mount Gambier campus 10 year anniversary celebrations. Uni SA is holding a cocktail party on November 27 from 7-9pm at Mount Gambier’s City Hall to celebrate the significant milestone. The event is targeting graduates from the university since it opened its doors in Mount Gambier in 2005, of which there has been more than 200. And the good news is many of those alumni are still in the region, working in the Limestone Cast since completing their tertiary study at the Mount Gambier campus. “When the university first opened there was a lot of mature age students,” School of Psychology and Social Work course coordinator and lecturer Dr Sue Mutton said. “So many people were embedded in the community and couldn’t leave to go to Adelaide or Melbourne so they welcomed the opportunity to have a university right here.” Dr Mutton has been with the Mount Gambier campus since it was established and said it is growing all the time. And as staff and alumni look forward to the anniversary celebrations, they are also looking forward to the imminent opening of a new stateof-the-art building at the Uni SA Mount Gambier campus that will boast the latest in technology and enable students to link electronically to anywhere in the world. In its infancy, Uni SA Mount Gambier offered nursing, social work and business courses and has since added education to its repertoire. The campus currently houses 150 students with the mix of students now around 50 percent mature age and 50 percent school leavers. “It works well,” Dr Mutton said. “The school leavers help the older students with the technology and the older students have great life experience.” The relationship built with the community has also been vital in the ongoing success and development of the local campus as well. Government departments and local business

have provided placement opportunities for Uni SA students, as well as employment opportunities once they graduate, and the campus has also been able to utilise local experts as guest lecturers. “Many of the local Families SA staff are graduates, a lot of the hospital’s nursing staff are graduates and there are plenty of business graduates working in the region as well,” Dr Mutton said. The November 27 soiree is $10 a ticket with all bookings online with no tickets available at the door. LOCAL National success for local karate students Seishikan Karate had four students selected to represent South Australia at the AKF National Championships in Adelaide. Chelsea Frost won silver in the fighting and bronze in the forms while Leigh Redford won a bronze medal in

the fighting. Chelsea, a little pocket dynamite, showed no fear when it comes to fighting. She showed determination fighting, dominating the mat against much taller opponents. Her body kicks worked well in most of her fights but failed her in the finals. “I guess they worked out her strong points and had her worked out for the gold medal bout,” said coach Alba Kraatz. “I need to work on my timing, like when I come in to attack and then out and also I need to use my hands more,” Chelsea said. Kraatz also said Chelsea will need to work on her distancing and combination techniques against taller opponents. Chelsea’s performance in the forms was tremendous, narrowly defeated in the fourth round. She picked herself up and showed her professionalism at such a tender age to win through the repecharge and claim the bronze medal. Chelsea said she had already been made aware that she would need to work on her stances. “I realised that my stances weren’t exactly 45 degrees in Seipai,” Chelsea said. Leigh Redford lost his first fight to the eventual winner and has already worked out why his fight was not as aggressive. “I need to warm up better instead of using the first fight as a warm up,” he said. “I was too defensive and allowed the opponent to dominate the fight.” Redford fought much more aggressively in several of the repecharge fights to win the bronze medal. Not placing in the kata

division Redford understands that he will need to improve his posture and stances. Lauren Frost fought well, scoring with reverse punches and even with a head kick, but found her opponent to powerful and fast. In the kata, Lauren managed to get through to the third round which was fantastic considering she was up against some well-known competitors. Next year she will be going up a division which will put her in the cadet division and therefore will need to learn more katas. “I will need to work harder for next year and learn more katas and improve on my strength and speed,” said Lauren. This was Bradley Frost’s first National Karate Championships. He pulled out of the State team last year in favor of going overseas to experience training with the Japanese masters. Considering this is his first experience he did extremely well coming fourth out of 31 competitors.

He lost to the eventual winner, who is also a current Australian team representative. Bradley performed outstandingly through all the repecharge rounds to run out of high katas for the bronze medal round. He settled with Saifa which is the dan black belt kata to find his opponent a former Australian team member perform an extremely difficult kata from the Shito Ryu style of Karate. This was a great effort, Bradley should hold his head up high. “The students did me proud, they have worked so hard all year, their commitment and perseverance should be commended,” said Kraatz. Seishikan Karate School have always produced successful competitors at all level and can now boast that they have also produced some young coaches. Whilst away overseas on official karate duties and also pleasure, Shihan Alba was able to leave the students in the capable hands of Wade VonStanke, Katelyn Lapatha and Phillip Penafiel to teach under the supervision of Shihan Phil. Training is held at St. Pauls Church Hall, on Penola Road, Mount Gambier.

Line a large oven tray with baking paper. To make buns, combine instant mashed potato, gruyere and flour in a bowl. Whisk mustard, 1 tablespoon oil and 220ml water in a small bowl, add to flour mixture, then stir to form a dough. Meanwhile, to make patties, process half the beef and bacon in a food processor until finely chopped. Transfer to a bowl. Repeat with remaining beef and bacon. Using oiled hands, shape mixture into 20 x 5cm patties. To make coleslaw, combine cabbage, mayonnaise, parsley and finely chopped gherkins in a small bowl. Season with freshly ground black pepper. To cook patties, heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large frying pan over high heat. Cook half the patties for 1 1/2 minutes each side for medium-rare or until cooked to your liking. Drain on paper towel. Repeat with remaining 1 tablespoon oil and patties. Season with salt and pepper. To assemble, top each bun base with a little coleslaw, a pickle slice, a patty and 2 tomato slices. Top with lids and secure with toothpicks to serve.

Library2Go hits the road Glenelg Libraries is on the move, providing a new outreach mobile service to support the shire’s regional communities. The Library2Go vehicle will made its maiden voyage last week, visiting Dartmoor, Merino and Digby, supplying library users with a large selection of books, magazines, DVDs and other library materials.The vehicle, which includes free wifi internet and a coffee machine, will also be open to the public at this weekend’s Upwelling Festival on the Bentinck Street lawns. Cr Max Oberlander said Glenelg Libraries was proud to provide a full range of library services to its regional townships. “Libraries are at the heart of council’s community service and it is important that our regional communities have the same opportunities to access great reading material and resources like our larger centres,” Cr Oberlander said. “We welcome everyone, whether you are a library user or not, to come down and join our staff for a coffee and muffin to see the great services this new outreach library van provides. The van is a one-stop shop for all library services from borrowing books and DVDs to use of free wifi internet.” Cr Oberlander said in addition to regular town visits, the vehicle would be used at various community events throughout the year. LOCAL Win-win result at Janmac by Ian Turner The Hausler family staged a wonderful high quality presentation of 170 Poll Dorset and White Suffolk rams for sale at their 11th annual Janmac ram sale on October 7 and achieved a total clearance at an overall $1107 average, their second best ever sale result. While this made the vendors and their families very happy, it was also a great day for the 43 registered repeat and new buyers. In today’s buoyant lamb industry the top end prices in the flock rams were acceptable but buyers were also able to purchase many in the great value range of $700 to $900 to average out buying accounts; 82 rams selling in this price range. Stud sales are never reliable or predictable, but in the evolution and growth of the Janmac stud, Grant and Bryce Hausler were extremely pleased to see six of their top Poll Dorset rams go to ram breeding, or stud flocks. Top amongst them was lot 5, Janmac 140179, selling for $4100 to Brian Kester, Appleton Park

stud, Apsley. This was the fifth ram Brian has bought from Janmac over the years and he was impressed with this ram’s performance and muscling in combination with its overall correct balance, structure and conformation. DS & SL Hobbs, Clear Lake went to $4000 for lot 3, Janmac 140156, both these top rams being sons of Newbold 120065, the high performance ram used through AI. This ram, and Kurralea 110011, the $28,000 Australian record priced Poll Dorset when purchased by Janmac and Ulandi Park in 2012, have had a big impact on the Janmac flock and proven to be a wise investments, going a long way in attracting stud breeders to the sale. Other rams went at $3000, $3200, $2500 and $2750 to ram breeding flocks. Of the flock ram buyers, six purchased 10 or more rams to put sustained strength in the bidding into the sale. Topping that list was Leigh McGinty, Apsley who purchased 15

Poll Dorsets from $850 to $1200 and averaged $1087, following on from the 14 he purchased last year at a $957 average. PR, ME & KP Donaldson, buying through Rodwells Edenhope was only two behind in volume, their 13 Poll Dorsets being purchased from $900 to $1100 and at a $985 average. Long term Janmac client Danny West, Westwood, Edenhope purchased 12 rams in the high value $700 to $800 range, these being eight Poll Dorsets and four White Suffolks. Purchasing 10 Poll Dorset rams each were Damien Merrett, representing KF, ML & PD Merrett, Glendonald, Apsley and buying through Westech Ag Kyle Livestock Pty Ltd, paying from $1100 to $1600 and averaging $1390; Steve Di Giorgio, S & R DiGiorgio, Lucindale through PPH&S Naracoorte, paying from $900 to $1400 and averaging $1090; and P & L Skinner, Ozenkadnook and also through PPH&S, paying from $850 to $900 and averaging $870. Matt Treglown, Poolaigelo was new to the Janmac buyers’ list, picking up nine rams from $900 to $1400. Seven of these, four Poll Dorsets and three White Suffolks, were purchased account Karinya Farms, while two Poll Dorsets were account JN Treglown. Another new client making a significant buying impact was Bale Farming, Kaniva. Damian Pearson, Westech Ag Kyle Livestock purchased eight rams for this account, four from each breed and paid from $1200 to $1800 and at a $1425 average. These included

the $1800 top priced White Suffolk ram. Other significant buyers included NW & EE Teate, through Landmark Naracoorte, seven Poll Dorsets from $950 to $1300; Rich Farming Trust, Goroke, six Poll Dorsets from $850 to $900; Ellis Brothers, Goroke, three Poll Dorsets at $1000 and three White Suffolks at $950; Damian Walter, Waverley Farming Trust, Goroke, six Poll Dorsets from $850 to $900; AG & LE Brook, Goroke, seven Poll Dorsets all at $850; and JA & GR Hateley, through Westech Ag Kyle Livestock, six White

The 33 White Suffolk rams in the sale sold to $1800 and averaged $962 while the higher profile and dominant Poll Dorset offering saw all 137 sell to $4100 and average $1131. Wrattonbully wines have scooped the pool at the Limestone Coast Wine Show, winning six out of 13 trophies awarded at last week’s 15th annual event. Pepper Tree Wines’ 2013 Pepper Tree Block 21A Single Vineyard Wrattonbully Cabernet Sauvignon won the David Wynn Trophy for Best Red Wine of Show, the HR (Ron) Haselgrove O.B.E. Trophy for Best Cabernet Sauvignon of Show and the Best Individual Vineyard Wine Trophy at last week’s Trophy Presentation Feast held at The Barn, Mount Gambier. The wine went on to claim the Bill Redman Trophy for Best Wine of Show, with Chair of Judges, Jane Faulkner, describing it as “incredibly approachable”. “It has absolutely beautiful fruit and the tannins are really silky and supple with a persistent long finish – it’s just a really exquisite wine,” she said. “Single vineyards have to be distinctive and special in order to really make people notice and the fact that this wine has won Best Wine of Show is a testament to the producer and the viticulturist. It’s a gorgeous wine.” Balnaves of Coonawarra manages Pepper Tree Wines’ Limestone Coast vineyards, and the accolades earned viticulturist Pete Balnaves the highly coveted Arthur Hoffman Trophy for Viticulturist of Best Wine of Show. The Balnaves family’s own winning streak continued with the Balnaves 2013 Chardonnay claiming back-to-back Best Chardonnay trophies. The wine was also awarded the Colin Kidd Trophy for Best White Wine of Show. Meanwhile, the 2014 Pepper Tree Limited Release Wrattonbully Tempranillo impressed guest judge Lim Hwee Peng from Singapore, who gave it the International Judges’ Award. “It was a very pretty wine which doesn’t just have concentration of fruit; there is a real vibrancy with long lengthy flavour that isn’t overpowering, and I think this wine would appeal to the real connoisseur who understands and truly appreciates wine,” he said. “It was Wrattonbully’s year, and credit to Pepper Tree for what they’re doing because their wines are just on song at the moment,” Jane Faulkner said.

The family-owned Wangolina Winery at Mount Benson secured a double trophy haul, with the 2013 Wangolina Tempranillo winning the Best Other Single Red Variety Trophy, while the 2013 Wangolina Spectrum Syrah collected the wine show’s first ever Small Batch Trophy, building on last year’s wine show commendation for the 2012 vintage. The Karl Seppelt Trophy for Best White Wine (excluding Chardonnay) was awarded to Coonawarra’s Raidis Estate for its 2015 Raidis Estate The Kid Riesling. Lindemans 2013 Coonawarra Limestone Shiraz Cabernet won the Best Blended Red trophy, and Jack Estate’s 2013 Jack Estate Shiraz was named the Best Shiraz. The Ewen Fergusson McBain Trophy for Best Museum Wine went to the highly decorated 2006 Casella 1919 Cabernet Sauvignon produced from grapes grown in Wrattonbully and Coonawarra. No trophy was awarded for Best Sparkling or Sweet Wine. The 2015 wine show saw a record medal haul, with a total of 61 gold medals eclipsing the previous record of 43 set in 2014. A further 72 silver and 172 bronze medals were also awarded, with Brands Laira named the Most Successful Exhibitor at the event. “Sixty-five per cent of all wines that were entered won a medal, and there’s a really lovely spread across the regions, which is a really important indicator of the quality of wines that are coming out of the Limestone Coast,” said Jane Faulkner. Pour dressing over chicken mixture. Toss to combine. Place a damp tea towel on a baking tray. Fill a shallow dish with warm water. One by one, dip rice paper rounds in water. Place on a tea towel to absorb excess water. Place 2 mint leaves along 1 edge of each round. Top with 2 tablespoons chicken mixture. Roll up, folding in edges, to enclose filling. Place on damp tea towel on tray. Cover with another damp tea towel. Make Dipping sauce: Combine hoisin, five spice and 2 tablespoons cold water in a bowl. Stir in onion and coriander. Serve rice paper rolls with dipping sauce

LOCAL Bendigo Bank scholarship up for grabs Mount Gambier & District youth will again be able to get a head start on their studies, with Mount Gambier Community Bank® Branch announcing the opening of their tertiary scholarship program for the 2016 year. The scholarship, which opens on December 1, will support one local student with study costs in their first year of higher education. Mount Gambier Community Bank® Branch Chairperson Helen Strickland said helping young people gain access to tertiary education was one way her branch was bigger than a bank. “Our young people are our future and we believe they need the best support possible to achieve their dreams,” Helen said. “The high cost associated with tertiary study can have a significant impact on a young person’s ability to further their education and some may not get the chance to go to university without financial help. “Our Community Bank® Branch is happy to help ease some of that pressure and hopefully one day these students will return and share their new skills with the Mount Gambier community.” Successful Mount Gambier Community Bank® Scholarship applicants will initially receive funding for one year and depending on academic performance, the scholarship may be renewed to assist in the second year of their study. Local Sport FOOTBALL Tim Sullivan’s long road back by Peter Argent A freak accident and initial miss-diagnoses of a knee injury has meant that 18-year-old football talent Tim Sullivan has spent the 2015 season on the sidelines. He was still invited to the SA screening of the 2015 AFL draft combine held on Sunday, October 18 at Netball SA Stadium, but naturally having his ACL reconstructed five and a half months earlier meant he couldn’t attempt another of the athletic or endurance tests. “It was a freak accident in February wresting with a mate that I regret now,” Sullivan said. “I went to Melbourne on an (AFL) academy trip and was still struggling, so they organized to get a scan. “It found that my ACL had come of the bone. “When I went under the knife, they didn’t know if it would be a full or partial ‘reco’. “So I only found out when I woke up that I have a full reconstruction.” Sullivan is seen as an elite teenage footballer, being a part of the AFL academy both at level I and Level II, along with member a member of the 2014 South Australian title winning combination that collected the national under 18 crown, as a bottom aged player. “The ACL has certainly put Tim back 12 months,” Bays Talent Manager Brenton Hole said. “He now needs to ensure this rehabilitation is done correctly and he presenting himself as fit as possible and be ready to play as early as he can in 2016. “Tim is a natural football talent and a skilful player for his size. “Before the accident he showed athleticism and strong marking skills. “There is no doubt he in an exciting talent. “The Glenelg Football Club is hoping that he will be playing significant senior football in 2016.” Sullivan, like his older brothers Tom and Matt, hails from Mid South East Football Legaue club Port MacDonnell. The youngest of the three siblings, Sullivan first played A grade as a 15-year-old in 2012 and shared his commitment between the Demons and the Bays. At Port MacDonnell he had played 29 A grade games up until the end of last year. He also played a pair of SANFL Under 16s games as a 15-yearold in ’12, another five at that level in 2013 and participated in four Under 18s games in 2014. That year he also played in a pair of the State Under 18 fixtures in the title winning SA

team, under Talent Manager Brenton Phillips including the critical final clash against Victorian metro. He also played a game for the AFL academy in New Zealand and to top things off was a member of the academy team in the inaugural AFL Grand Final curtain raiser against an Allies under 18s team at the famous Melbourne Cricket Ground. “I never thought I’d get to a Grand Final, let alone play on the MCG on Grand Final day,” Sullivan mused. “That game, along with the trip to New Zealand earlier last year has been the highlights so far.” Sullivan is also buoyed by the opportunity that he’ll be considered as one of overage options for the 2016 state underage 18s program, by coach Phillips put a rider on that but saying that the 199cm, 90 kg athlete must demonstrate that his knee has full recovered and he presents himself in fit condition for a rigors of football at the start of next season. Sullivan explained among him mentors locally were Peter

Zeitz and Will McDonald, who took him under his wing. A big Brisbane Lions fan who admired Warrnambool lad Jonathan Brown and the way he went about his game, the football world is looking for the knockabout lad from Port Mac, to develop and make the most of his ability and get that dreamed chance at the “big time”.

Motor Bittersweet celebration for 10th anniversary Legend of the Lakes Hill Climb Tributes are flowing for the visionary behind the Trident Tyre Centre Legend of the Lakes Hillclimb in the lead-up to next weekend’s 10th Anniversary event. Lionel Stingers was heavily involved in the running of the unique car race on Mount Gambier’s popular Valley Lakes tourist route until he passed away in May 2014 after a short battle with cancer. Mr Stingers’ son, Sean, says his father had long-believed that the volcanic precinct was the perfect venue for the high-speed event, but it took several years of convincing to get the first race up and running in 2006. “Just how much work had to be done

to get the actual event running was extraordinary; he had to get the Mount Gambier City Council on board first of all, and then the CAMS body on side and also the car club – they actually closed off the road and got local driver Peter Gazzard to run a car up there to see if it was something worthwhile,” he says. Sean says many of the 135 drivers who have nominated for the November 6-8 event have been involved since the beginning. “I think the fact that it has drawn so many people in and gets such a good amount of spectators proves its success, and while Dad was very proud of it, he was also very humble

– he just liked to get the job done, and loved seeing people come back every year saying what a great event it was,” he says. This year, Sean will be working as an official over the three days, guiding the entrants around the winding circuit mapped out by his dad. “It’s an awesome event and I love going there, but it’s one of those moments throughout the year for mum (Wendy Stingers) and I where you do expect dad to be there, because it was one of the major things that he achieved in his life,” Sean says. “It’s a bit tough at some stages, but the fact that it’s still running and the fact that everybody still gets behind it is a testament to Dad as well.” The South Eastern Automobile Club (SEAC) has described Mr Stingers as “a fierce competitor and a strong supporter of our efforts from the very beginning”, while reigning Legend of the Lakes, Peter Gazzard, says Mr Stingers continues to be an inspiration. “The 10th anniversary is very significant due to Lionel’s vision; it was his dream to have this hillclimb, and before he got sick, he said he wanted to get to 10 as race director and then stand down and let someone else run it,” Mr Gazzard explains. “He was so determined to get to 10, but he didn’t quite there, so this is a special event for his family and for the local organisers.” The Trident Tyre

Centre Legend of the Lakes Hillclimb is open to more than 30 different vehicle classes ranging from historic through to improved production, sports cars and four-wheel drive saloons, and the SEAC has released a list of 10 drivers to watch in 2015: 1) Simon Feil – Mount Gambier driver - regular top 10 finisher. Drives a white Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. 2) Jamie Pohlner – Mount Gambier driver, currently 2nd in South Australia Rally Championship. Drives a Subaru WRX. 3) Damien Brand – Penola driver,

competed in SA motorkhanas recently and has performed really well. Drives a Subaru WRX. 4) Peter Gazzard – Mt Gambier driver, one of only 2 winners of the event. Drives a red Mitsubishi Evo IX. 5) Kevin Mackrell – Victorian entrant. The only other driver apart from Peter Gazzard to win the Legend of the Lakes. Drives a self-engineered V8 4wd Datsun 260Z. 6) Kevin Weeks – Adelaide Lamborghini driver, very keen to get on the podium. 7) Jeff Welsh – Blue Cobra driver – Australian Special modelled on a Lotus 7. Powered by a grey Holden engine with a Repco Hipower cross flow head. 8) John French – Black Austin Sprite Healey owner. Car has a great history, having twice won the Allan Jones Trophy. A current record holder at several venues. 9) Rob Black – Black McLaren 650S, has been competing in Adelaide rallies. 10) Robert Sales – Marsel Special 1938, great fun car that he has used for 7 years.
