LOCAL Dancer set to take a leap of faith

It has been a whirlwind few months for Lily Wilson. She has gone from contemplating studying to be an accountant after successfully completing her SACE to being one of the historic first intake at Transit Dance in Melbourne. The new school, run by esteemed teacher and choreographer Paul Malek is set to make waves in the dance industry and 17 year old Lily will be part of the first steps taken by the new school. Lily has always loved dance and always excelled. “I started with calisthenics when I was four but I soon realised that dancing was what I really loved,” she said. Two years ago she made a decision to join MJ Dance Studio and it has been a decision that has literally changed her career path. “The choreographers we have worked with and the teachers and other dancers that you meet has been amazing and my dancing has improved so much,” Lily said. And that is how Lily met Paul Malek and was encouraged to audition for his new school. “We went to Sydney in October for ADF (Australian Dance Festival),” Lily said. “I did one of Paul Malek’s workshops and I loved what he did – his style of dance.” Clearly Paul saw something in Lily as well and after applying and sending an audition DVD, the talented teenage dancer is set to start her career journey, like so many MJ dancers before her. Lily starts at Transit Dance on February 2 in what is a full time, two year course that will see Lily at classes from 8am-4.30pm Monday to Friday, with the usual rehearsals and workshops and the like on weekends. The first year will see Lily complete her Certificate IV in Dance with the second year adding a diploma to her credentials. It is daunting for the 17 year old to relocate to Melbourne but the family‘s dealings with the school and its staff thus far has certainly out them at ease. “They seem like one big family,” Lily’s mother Sarah Wilson said. “They have been so supportive and you can see they are really

going to look after Lily.” The Mount Gambier dancer will be in the same boat as most of her classmates as many will have moved from their homes in other cities or regional centres to take up the amazing opportunity to learn under Paul Malek. Most of the students organise share houses and Lily is in the throes of finalizing that ahead of her move at the end of this month. She will, of course, have to also find part time work so it will be a busy couple of years for the budding dancer. Lily hopes to find a place in a contemporary dance company or some other industry work once she completes the Transit Dance course.

School holidays are always a difficult time for parents when they’ve run out of things to distract their children, which is why the Mount Gambier Library provides activities for parents and children to come and enjoy together. From cooking to movies and popcorn, the library has had a lot to offer children of all ages within the past six weeks. “I think running these activities reminds the community that the library is a welcome place for families to come into,” staff member of the library, Jackie Gosling, said. The theme of the sessions usually change with the season. In summer, the library tends to offer a lot more outdoor activities, whereas in winter a majority of the activities are indoors. This school holidays’ theme was ‘adventure’ which coincidds with the theme of the Summer Reading Club, a competition that the library encourages. Kids can register online and log how many books they read, play games, read blogs and get the chance to win great prizes. At the end of the school holidays, the library has a wind-up party for the Summer Reading Club participants, which is another chance for readers to win great prizes. Prizes include whoever read the most and they can be entered into draws as well. Recycled crafts is another one of the activities that the library provides. These crafts include tin can robots, button canvas art and puzzle piece art. “We’re really keen on recycling here… it gives kids ideas to do at home and not to mention it’s a minimum cost for not only us, but parents at home,” Jackie said. Using the recyclables that library staff have collected over time, the children have come up with impressive designs. “We put the ideas out there and the kids come back with things we’d never even think of,” Jackie said. The reaction from the parents has been really positive as well, “It’s a cheat way for parents to get their kids out of the house for three times a week,” Jackie said. “They love that it’s minimum cost and something different to do on a rainy day.” Jackie said that the activities have been really popular amongst families and will continue in school holidays to come. Method Place the lemon grass, garlic and chilli in a mortar and pound with a pestle until a coarse paste forms. Stir in fish sauce and sugar until combined. Heat a wok over high heat. Spray with oil. Stir-fry half the chicken for 2-3 minutes or until golden. Transfer to a plate. Repeat with oil and the remaining chicken, reheating the wok between batches. Spray wok with oil. Stir-fry onion for 2 minutes or until golden. Add lemon grass mixture and stir-fry for 1 minute or until aromatic. Add the beans and cabbage and stirfry for 2 minutes or until the beans are bright green and tender crisp. Add the lime juice and toss to combine. Add chicken to wok and stir-fry for 1 minute or until heated through. Divide rice among dishes. Top with chicken mixture and Thai basil.

The Portland community can support their local hospital and continue a proud tradition of giving through a new Pavers for Portland District Health fund-raising initiative The Pavers for Portland District Health campaign being launched this week will give local people, families and businesses the chance to have their name engraved on a paver to become part of a permanent public display near the hospital. CEO Chris Giles said the health service was inviting all past and present clients, patients and supporters of PDH along with local businesses, companies and families to put their name down for history. “These engraved pavers will be laid at a prominent position near the new helipad site fronting Bentinck Street,” Ms Giles said. “There are several existing plaque and paver displays in the Ploughed Field area and PDH is keen to continue the flavour of that precinct,” she said. “Local people now have the opportunity to continue that history.” Ms Giles said she hoped for strong community support for the fundraising initiative. “Local people realise Portland District Health respects and nurtures human life by dedicated attention to excellence in healthcare for the whole community, and that we endeavour to deliver these services with compassion, respect and equity,” she said. “Individual supporters, families or companies can have their name or logo engraved on the clay pavers and become part of local history for future generations to see as a supporter of Portland District Health.” The pavers will be permanently located near the new helipad site, facing Bentinck Street on a sloping wall. All donations for pavers are tax deductible. The closing date for the first batch of pavers will be Monday March 2. Ms Giles said it was planned to make the pavers an ongoing community fund-raising initiative. COLLECTED STUPIDITY How I Know The World is Stuffed by Robbie Tansel Do you know how I know that we’ve just about ruined the world? Let me tell you a story. Late last year I was invited to a friend’s daughter’s kindy graduation ceremony. Let me repeat, kindy graduation ceremony. In the year 2014 children graduate from kindergarten. Mercifully they didn’t dress in the academic cap and gown but I know at several kindergartens and child care centres they do dress the poor little graduates in this way. Do we really need to hold a graduation ceremony to congratulate four year olds on making it through a year of kindy? Isn’t a graduation held to mark a significant achievement in someone’s education? When you graduate from university you have put at least four years of effort into achieving something that will hopefully allow you to stop mooching off your parents. Realistically, what have you achieved at the end of a year of kindergarten? You can fingerpaint and dig in the sandpit. Congratulations. Here’s a certificate. We’re so proud of you! If you’re a really high achiever you might have started to work on showing some self-restraint when it comes to sticking your finger in your nose. Isn’t this just about as silly as it comes? We don’t really need to have a graduation ceremony. By all means, tell them we’re proud of them. Kindy teachers, tell them how great a job you think they’re going to do at school. Mums and Dads, feel free to take them down to a fast food restaurant for a special treat or go buy them an ice cream. But we don’t need a big song and dance. We are watering down achievement and dishing out certificates and awards for the most meaningless of achievements. How long will it be until we’re presented with a certificate to recognise our fantastic achievement at the end of a bus ride? Are we getting to the point that the doctor will be waiting with a certificate to present to us as we exit the birth canal? I heard one little fella asked

about what primary school he was going to. He said he was actually hoping to get a trade or work in retail. He said further education wasn’t for him! When asked the same question one of the girls said she was looking to take a gap year. Don’t get me started on gap years! No wonder so many kids aren’t motivated in their education. They graduated at four years old. All they had to do was learn to spell their name. They think they’re ready to go out into the real world and put their newly acquired skills into practice but instead they’re told they actually need more education. That’s got to be a bit confusing when you’re four. Primary school graduations are no better, by the way. Surely a graduation is signifying a person finishing their education and moving into the world. By the end of primary school most of them still think One Direction is cool. Quite obviously they need more

education. I am comfortable with high school graduations as for many people this will be the end of their education. For many people their education actually finished a couple of years before the end of high school. They’ve just been attending not being educated. That falls under the, “If you put a cat in the oven it doesn’t make it a biscuit” rule. I don’t blame the educators by the way, because I think it is much more to do with what parents are wanting. They want to create the next photo opportunity for precious. Let’s start thinking about the damage we’re doing to children’s eyes while we’re talking about it, with the constant flash of a camera in their face from the moment they’re born. Park & Stride is a growing campaign in Mount Gambier which encourages shoppers of small shopping trips, when you can easily carry your bags to your car, to park away from the shops they plan on going to and walking to the stores rather than parking right at the door. The campaign came about when council teamed with the Think Feet First campaign which encourages kids to either walk or ride to school. The project quickly grew - having 220 likes on the Facebook page, thousands of hits on the website and more and more businesses wanting to take on the discount cards. The discount cards are for people who participate in Park & Stride. People can do this by liking their Facebook page and posting ‘I Park & Stride’ to their Facebook wall, have their photo taken holding the ‘I Park & Stride’ speech bubble at the Mount Gambier Civic Centre and a few other ways which people can find on the Park & Stride website: http://haveyoursaymountgambier.com.au/ park-and-stride/ Park & Stride is also aiming to work with schools and reinforce kids with the importance of building exercise into their day. Park & Stride is also benefiting the local community in a few different ways. The obvious one is exercise and most people are already doing Park & Stride without even knowing it. It’s called ‘incidental exercise’ which is the main type of exercise that people do. “Going to the gym and doing sport is easy to give up, but incidental exercise is really easy to do and you don’t even notice it,” Aaron Izzard, Environmental Sustainability Officer and one of the creators of Park & Stride said. Park & Stride will also produce more customers for local businesses as studies have shown that people who will walk to go to a shop will more than likely go into another shop to buy something else that they hadn’t even set out to buy. The discount cards that certain businesses have signed up to be a part of will help local businesses as well. One of the aims of the Park & Stride campaign is to eliminate some of the myths about Mount Gambier, for example the fact that we have barely any parking or that we have terrible weather. “Hopefully we get to change the perspective of the people in the town and how they see it; hopefully we can change the culture within the town a little bit.”

The first of 12 free Tech Savvy Seniors sessions will be held on 23 January at the Portland Library, with the program designed to give seniors handson experience and skills in using new technology, so they can stay connected with family, friends and community. The Victorian Tech Savvy Seniors is a Seniors Card age-friendly program supported by the Telstra Foundation, providing training and resources in technology and computing. Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Robert Halliday said Glenelg Shire Council was fortunate to have been provided funding to deliver the sessions across the Shire between January and June this year.“The sessions will cover topics including internet searching, use of devices and tablets, staying safe online, social media, banking and shopping online. “The training is intended to help those who didn’t grow up in a world with this kind of technology, so that they can learn the basics and feel comfortable and confident with its use. “This technology is everywhere in our community and is intended to make life easier, but can only be helpful if people know how to use it.” The sessions will begin at the Portland Library branch Technology Room on January 23. Method Toss together the lettuce, tomatoes, avocado and parsley, then divide between 4 serving plates. Grill or fry bacon until crispy, then drain on paper towels. Soft-poach eggs in lightly salted water for 3-4 minutes, then drain briefly on paper towels. Divide bacon and eggs between salad plates, drizzle with thinned mayonnaise or aioli and season to taste. Serve immediately.

The up and down weather has been a bit of a challenge for most gardeners but on the other hand it has given us plenty of opportunity to get outside and do some outdoor entertaining. I know I have just contemplated planting some Jacaranda trees on the west side to cut the summer sun on the windows and help cool the rooms on that side. Trees have an amazing ability to be our own air conditioning and studies have shown the cooling effects of lawns and plants in so many ways and trees are amazing at reducing the temperatures. Now is a good time to have a look around and even plant a mature or advanced shade tree. These come in many forms from evergreen, giving all year round shading, to deciduous, where the leaves will drop in winter to give added light. Deciduous again, come in many forms, from mop tops, where the size is governed by the grafting and variety, so good for courtyard shade and smaller spaces right throughout, to lightly foliaged trees, such as silver birch, then to larger, heavily foliaged shade trees such as maples and Planes that can give fantastic shading to large and small areas. We currently grow more than 30 varieties of mop top trees at Limestone Coast Advanced Trees. Most of these are in our Australia day sale. Remember, too, that many of the older varieties of larger trees you may have been used to are now available in (dwarf) smaller or narrower versions, allowing you to have your old favourites in smaller situations. Shade trees, hedges and especially fruit trees have been selling well since Christmas and now is a good time to plant as there is the whole growing season ahead of us. Look out for our 2015 releases of fruit trees and we have an Orchard Starter special on with any four advanced fruit trees for $134.95*. Many of our advanced and semi mature trees have

Ebony Cunningham is the local coordinator of the program and she was thrilled with how the first term of classes went last year. “Whilst we have a strong sporting culture in the region, there was a distinct lack of organised sport programs for children at the pre-school level,” Ebony said. “I loved the ReadySteadyGoKids concept because it not only sparks a child’s interest in exercise and a healthy lifestyle but offers so many indirect benefits, such as assisting prepare a child for school readiness, being part of a team, improving self-confidence and developing a motivation to achieve – all skills children can carry through and benefit from well into their schooling.” The families participating in the first term agree. “It was great to see so many of the kids improve their coordination and social skills – it

was all about having fun and learning at the same time,” Ebony said. The ReadySteadyGoKids program is specifically tailored for children aged 2.5 to six years and aims to develop a lifelong love for physical activity in kids. ReadySteadyGoKids is currently run at more than 150 locations throughout Australia and classes cover the fundamentals of 10 different sports in a welcoming environment while developing age-appropriate motor skills. Soccer, athletics, tennis, basketball, hockey, rugby, Aussie rules footy, golf, cricket and T-ball are all part of the program. The energetic classes are specially designed to develop and enhance children’s gross and fine motor skills in a supportive environment. Each class is aimed at building key social skills such as sportsmanship and teamwork whilst fostering a positive attitude towards exercise. “Children are motivated by the social interaction and the interest of trying a new sport, a new challenge,” she said. Jan Stirling AM will be the special guest at the District Council of Grant’s Australia Day Celebration at the Allendale East Soldiers Memorial Park on Monday 26th January. Ms Stirling, who is considered one of the most successful coaches in Australian Sport, will visit in her role as an Australia Day Ambassador. In 2008 she was honoured in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for her contribution to sport - as an elite coach, player and as a contributor to professional development and the community. She has had a long and illustrious association with Australian basketball as a former national player for the Opals and member of the Australia’s 1975 world championship team, and as a successful coach. She led the Adelaide Lightning to 12 straight Women’s National Basketball League finals appearances, and then progressed to the Australian Opals, which under her leadership, medalled at the World Championships, Commonwealth Games, and Olympics. Ms Stirling was head coach at two Olympic Games (Athens and Beijing) and Director of High Performance of the 2012 Paralympic Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Team in London and she continues to inspire and achieve success as a workshop facilitator and keynote speaker. The community are invited to meet with Jan, and hear her speak at the District Council of Grant’s Australia Day event. The free family focused event will start at 11.30am, with official proceedings starting at approximately 1pm.

LOCAL Nangwarry set to celebrate the past

We’ve all tried to arrange a get together with some of our old work mates, high school friends or family members and that’s exactly how the idea for the Nangwarry reunion came about. Set to happen on March 7 this year at the Nangwarry Community Hall, the reunion is open to anyone who has ever worked in, played sport for, used to live in the town or just anyone that wants to get to know a bit more about Nangwarry. It’s meant to be a very casual and informal event where people can remember together moments they’ve shared in the town. The reunion is set to start at 12.30pm with guest speakers, however people can come early at any time after 11.30am for a barbecue at a minimal cost. Any money raised on the day will go back into the community. It’s encouraged that people can get up and talk - it’s going to be very similar to an ‘open mic’ night. The day is meant to be a fun event for families and it’s encouraged that even people that don’t live in the South East

should come down and explore the town as there will be timber museum tours (gold coin donation) and not to mention that kids will have thousands of acres of pine trees to play in. Tea and coffee will be provided on the day, people just have to provide themselves with drinks and if they wish, they can bring a plate of afternoon tea to share. Not only will people be sharing afternoon tea but they’ll be sharing memories too. It’s a time for old residents of the town to tell stories and for new residents to find out about the history of the town and the families in it. The families in the town each have a big history as most of them are of migrant families that moved to the town in the 1940s when the timber mill was built, which is what makes Nangwarry the multicultural town it is today. The building of the mill brought people from countries like Turkey, Poland, England, Denmark, Lithuania and Amsterdam. However, due to the mill shutting, the town isn’t as cultural as it was in previous years. “I suppose that’s what everyone calls it these days, multicultural, but when I was at school, it was just natural for everyone to have families that weren’t originally from Australia,” Terry Bennier, the organiser of the reunion said. “I think there’ll be a lot of residents, even old ones, that will be surprised to realise that we have such a rich and special history here”. Terry hopes that the event will draw people to the Forestry and Logging Museum and the other tourist attractions of the town. The Wattle Range Council is sponsoring the event but there have been other people helping out with organising it. However a lot of the promoting comes from Facebook and by word of mouth. The February 2014 event has been five months in the making and Jo wants it to be a fun, relaxed and interactive four week program, which will run on February 3, 10, 17 and 24 from 6-8pm at The Oaktree Room, at The Barn. “Local businesses have been so supportive of the Wellness Seminar as well,” Jo said. “Businesses from within the health and well being industry as well as others.” And while photography will always be the primary career for Jo, in 2015 she is undertaking study to become a qualified health and wellness coach so seeing some of these industry experts in action will certainly complement that goal. Clementine’s pottery, ranging from everyday utilitarian pieces to major exhibition works, has been a feature of the gallery for many years. Gallery 54 is presenting a final display of Clementine’s work until the end of January so this is your last chance to purchase her unique pottery. After studying Ceramics at the Mount Gambier TAFE SA and teaching for many years Clementine furthered her studies at the Australian National University in Canberra completing a Diploma in Ceramics. Following a trip to China she expanded her field of knowledge experimenting with porcelain and decorating techniques including carving and brushwork. Her work includes sculptural forms and a range of domestic wares. Clementine lived and worked in the rural town of Glencoe and has travelled extensively. Her work is held in public and private collections. Gallery 54 is open each day during January from 10am to 4pm.

Mount Gambier secures national cricket championships It’s official. The Mount Gambier & District Cricket Association will be the hosts of the 2016 Australian Country Cricket Championships. The championships were due to be hosted South Australia in 2016 and the decision by the South Australian Country Cricket Committee was announced last Monday in Bendigo at the conclusion of the 2015 event. Four former South East based cricketers were part of the 2015 Outbacks team – Adam Somerfield (South Gambier); Nick Clayfield (Penola); Trent Badman (West Gambier) and Ben Parish (Beachport) – and local organisers are hopeful some of this region’s young talent will also earn selection and the chance to represent their State on home turf. It was expected that the Barossa Valley would earn the nod for the 2016 event but the association did not bid for the 2016 championships, leaving it a race in two – Mount Gambier and the Upper North. Just before Christmas, Cricket Australia and South Australian Cricket Association officials inspected the local association’s facilities and in the end, it was a unanimous decision for the Mount Gambier & District Cricket Association to be the home of what is hoped will be an historic Australian Country Cricket Championships, with the inaugural inclusion of a women’s event. “It’s not confirmed,” association

spokesman George Kidman said. “But Cricket Australia is really pushing for there to be at least two or three teams – Shelley Nitschke from SACA will certainly drive that with the women’s game a real key growth area.” It is the first time since 2003 that the championships have been held in the South East but this time round there is no financial burden to be faced by the local association with Cricket Australia having taken over the majority of the bill for this event in recent years to ensure its continued success. Kidman (pictured) said while the association and its member clubs would have plenty of work to do in the lead up and during the January championships, Cricket Australia was in charge of running the event and the City of Mount Gambier should be congratulated for kickstarting the bid to host the prestigious sporting event. “They (City of Mount Gambier) were on it before we were,” Kidman said. “They were integral to us winning the tender and this is the best news the association has had in some time.” Kidman is now hopeful that some of the young talent in this region that have been selected in the soon to be revealed South East team to compete in this year’s South Australian Country Carnival will perform to a high standard and capture the attention of State selectors. “It would be great to get a few locals in the Outbacks team for the 2016 championships,” Kidman said. The likes of North Gambier’s Matt McInerney and Jake Schutz, who both have centuries to their name this season, with McInerney adding a One Day Cup century in the recent final to his Barber Shield ton from earlier in the season, examples of the rising talent Kidman hopes could earn a call up to wear the State tri-colours. Their current North Gambier team mates – Michael Silvy and Michael Johnston – have both represented the Outbacks over the journey. All the association’s turf wickets are set to be used during the 2016 championships, including Penola’s McCorquindale Park. The Mount Gambier grounds are Blue Lake Sports Park, McDonald Park, Marist Park, Malseed Park and Frew Park.

South East basketballers part of gold medal winning team

Three South East basketballers were part of the SA Sharks team that secured a nailbiting one point victory over the Victorian Settlers at the Australian Country Basketball Cup in Albury last week. Lakers’ Tenille Gray and Brenna McKay and Millicent’s Jess Allan were part of the team that took out the Under 18 Girls’ title.

Kyle Maney lives and breathes cricket so when the opportunity arose to attend a coaching clinic with the Adelaide Strikers he jumped at the opportunity. So did younger sister Mckayla (6) who also loves the game. The siblings registered with the Milo T20 Blast and that’s how they found about the two day coaching clinic. The family was already being in Adelaide over the festive season to attend the New Year’s Eve Big Bash clash at Adelaide Oval but were happy to stay for the January 8 & 9 coaching clinic after receiving the email notification. Ten year old Kyle is playing his first season of competition cricket with West Gambier in the Hall Trophy. “It’s fun,” Kyle said. “It’s really, really good to now be playing for real.” The first day of the coaching clinic saw the kids working drills indoors in the Adelaide Oval Indoor Training Centre as rain fell steadily outside. Those sessions were also visited by the Strikers mascot –Smash. On day two, the kids were all out on the hallowed turf of the Adelaide Oval, running skills and drills, playing mock games and meeting their heroes. Top order big hitter and wicketkeeper Tim Ludeman and bowler Ben Laughlin were the players that the Maney children met, with the players signing autographs, playing the mock games and posing for photographs. The parents and kids also got tours of the new Adelaide Oval facilities. The Maneys would encourage all cricket fans to register with the Milo T20 Blast so they, too, can find out about these wonderful opportunities for their cricket loving kids.

Mount Gambier tennis crowns its champions The weather gods tried to thwart the start of the 2015 Mount Gambier & District Tennis Association championships but after the mixed doubles championships survived the Friday night showers to crown a champion, te singles and doubles events went on unabted. Andrew Van Den Hurk won his ??th singles title, while Ashlea Oldfield earned her ?st. The doubles event was taken out by Andrew Van Den Hurk and Tom Madigan and the women’s event by Bailey Young and Sharon Edwards. Mount Gambier tennis crowns its champions

Local swimmers shine at SA Country Championships The Country Championships are over for another year and Blue Lake Y swimmers can hold their heads up high. All their hard work and long hours in the pool have paid off with great results. A co-host of the 2015 championships, Blue Lake Y had 23 swimmers in the Superfish event, the youngest being Charlee Spicer and Louise O’Callaghan - both six years old. All swimmers had a great meet with most doing personal best times, and after getting their first taste of a big championship event are already looking

forward to next year’s event. With a total of 151 individual swims from the team, Blue Lake Y managed to achieve 115 personal best times, while on an individual level the swimmers collected three gold, four silver and six bronze medals. The relay teams faired very well as well, three gold and four silver medals. One highlight was Daniel O’Callaghan, who was the youngest competitor at only 12 years old, in the gruelling 1500m freestyle. He completed the race in a time of 22.25.66 which was a PB of 20 seconds; his previous best time had only been set at the BLY carnival in early December last year. Another highlight was the 14 years and under 4 x 50 meter freestyle relay team who wowed their more highly ranked opponents, including Onkaparinga and Whyalla, to take home the gold. That team included Ruby Hickman, Jaime Spicer, Jelena Carpenter and Charlotte Smith, with a combined time of 2.11.42. The 12 years and under 4 x 50 meter freestyle relay team made up by Hayley Pearson, Emma O’Callaghan, Claire Redding and Nicole Moran matched their older team mates collecting gold for their relay in a time of 2.27.07. With healthy competition amongst the team mates

the boys weren’t to be out done, the 12 and under 4 x 50 meter medley relay team consisting of Luke Janssen, Daniel O’Callaghan, Archie Muller and Harry Snodgrass also collected gold with a combined time of 2.42.59. Rocco Bueti who is a Life Member of BLY Swim Club, received a well deserved Swimming SA Life Memberhsip from Chairman Bob Fox (pictured far left), for his many years of dedicated service to Swimming SA, including 10 years on the board. Simon Geldenhuys, who is 14 years old and represents Whyalla Swim club, is a name to remember as a future Olympian, scooping the awards pool and breaking two SA Country records, including one which had been set in Mount Gambier in 1988. Archie Muller from BLY swam extremely well in the 11 and under male age group, coming in second in the overall standings behind James Kemp, from Onkaparinga. Nicole Moran was the highest point scorer for BLY females, with overall points of 44. Onkaparinga took home the SWIMMING SA COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS SHIELD with a total point score of 2043 with Blue Lake Y finishing eighth in a field of 23 clubs. The 2016 championships will be held in Loxton.

Motor LOCAL In 2014, the South Eastern Automobile Club of South Australia Inc (SEAC) celebrates an important milestone, the 60th anniversary of the formation of the club. The occasion will be formally recognised with a celebration, also the club’s 2014 season presentation dinner, to be held at the Presidential Motor Inn, Jubilee Highway West, Mount Gambier, on Saturday, January 17. SEAC extends an invitation to all associated with the club over its 60 years to attend and re-live some of the memories and the history of the club. On June 4, 1954, 29 car enthusiasts met with the view of forming an automobile club. Those present agreed to do so and on July 2, 1954, SEAC held its first official meeting, with Syd Chapman as innaugural President and T. Rhodes Secretary. By the end of its first year of operation, SEAC membership had expanded to more than 120 persons, including Aub Shelton and Allan Scott and many other notable men and women from over the South East. During the 1990s, the club was to finally find a place to call home, with the purchase of an abanoned limestone quarry on Megaw Road, Compton. Work on SEAC Park, as it was to be called, began in earnest, and now boasts a 2km autocross track, grassed pit areas, club rooms & shelter shed, generator and equipment and machinery all now owned by the club.
