COVER Too many great locations to choose a favourite “It would be an understatement to say that I consider myself one of the lucky ones in life to have stumbled across a career that I love and has brought me so many wonderful experiences and lifelong memories. Fifteen years later I am still passionate about travel and am fortunate to have experienced many corners of the globe and the respective cultures of each country visited. I have been lucky enough to travel in economy, premium economy and business class (first class is still on my wishlist); experience first class accommodations versus shanty style accommodation, with beds that had covers that did not even cover my knees. I have cruised and cycled countries (yes, on a pushbike), toured via bus, experienced iconic trains like the Rocky Mountaineer amongst so many other local forms of transport. It is therefore hard for me to speak about one destination as I always see a benefit to each country visited so I thought I’d briefly highlight some points I think are worth sharing about my recent experiences within the past 12 months. The USA is widely misunderstood and actually has a lot of great people and an extreme variety of destinational experiences. Vegas is surreal and for those wanting to experience old style Vegas, a trip to Freemont Street is worthwhile. Hawaii is a temperate all year round and has some great shopping and, yes, tipping is expected, and should be factored into your overall budget for any trip to the US. Canada, both east and west, is beautiful but even the worst photographer can take a postcard perfect picture of the amazing Rockies, Lake Louise and the incredible scenery that is everywhere you look.

You will be sure to run into an Aussie if you go to Banff, and Vancouver is a city worthwhile visiting. It has a great balance of old world and new. Morocco and its traditional riad accommodation, the amazing medinas, where there is a hive of activity, which is completely disguised until you enter and the beautiful people makes this country an incredible cultural experience. Last, but not least, I have to mention the best hidden treasure though in the South Pacific - Samoa. If you want to experience a beautiful destination, both visually and culturally, which is still unspoilt and not commercialised then I highly recommend this to all. It has so many natural and amazing experiences to offer and feeding the sea turtles by hand will be a memory I know my seven year old son

will treasure forever. Don’t expect anything to happen in a hurry though as it all happens

COVER Africa needs to go on everybody’s bucket list Back in my hey day (we won’t go into exactly how long ago) I loaded my backpack and headed to London where I lived and worked. What an amazing life changing experience that saw me living with eight people in a two bedroom flat with only one bath. The benefit of living in the London is that you have the whole of the UK and Europe right on your doorstep making my decision as to where to travel to next extremely difficult. Australians are viewed as very hard working and work wasn’t difficult to find if you were prepared to give anything a go. My roles included nannying (my claim to fame is that I was a nanny for Jade Jagger and, yes, I spoke to Mick Jagger on the phone one day), bar work and administration. Sadly my working holiday visa expired but I wasn’t about to

take a direct flight back to Australia instead I extended my adventure and spent three months travelling overland from Nairobi to Capetown. An unforgettable journey which included iconic game parks, where I was literally metres away from a pride of lions or a herd of elephants, who were so relaxed in their own environment that they barely blinked at the Mazungoos (white people) clicking madly to get that postcard perfect photo. Zanzibar Island is as close to paradise that I’ve ever experienced - the talcum powder sand beaches on the East Coast and the narrow alleyways of Stonetown offering an array of small shops selling local art, aromatic coffee, homemade island delicacies and of course local spices which the island is famous for. Any trip to Africa is not complete without a visit to Victoria

Falls, locally known as the Smoke that Thunders, bordering Zimbabwe and Zambia, Vic Falls is absolutely breathtaking. There are

various viewing points from the top of the falls but I recommend to take a game viewing cruise from the base of the Zambezi River where you’re almost guaranteed to see hippos popping up intermittently for breath, elephants grazing on the riverbanks and giraffe feeding on Acacia leaves. For those looking for adventure, Victoria Falls is the capital of high adrenaline activities ranging from white water rafting, bungy jumping and micro flights over the falls to name a few. I can’t talk about Africa without mentioning the local people, particularly the children who are so gorgeous and although it’s true to say they have very little in the way of materialistic items they overflow with happiness, enthusiasm, gratuity and demonstrate the importance of family and the simplicity of traditional values that is woven into their culture. So do I want to return to Africa - absolutely but this time it will be shared with my family and perhaps lodge style accommodation rather than camping. Carla Anderson

COVER Explore the world with your family Working in the travel industry for as long as I have, it goes without saying that my husband and I both love to travel and any opportunity that arose, we have always jumped on it. So when starting my family eight years ago, I wasn’t going to let this change and since having my daughter in 2006 and my son in 2013, we have still continued to travel, only now as a family. Family travel can be challenging and in some ways restrictive but it’s all about approaching it in a different way and it can be so amazing to see the world through your children’s eyes. We have done three overseas holidays with my children (so far) and many within Australia. All of the holidays were completely different, but all as wonderful as each other. When my daughter was four, we went to Fiji – what an amazing destination for kids and such a great intro to travelling for my daughter. It is only a short flight away and the people just love the kids. They cater very well for us ‘Aussies’ with many Australian foods available. We spent some time in both Denarau and on Castaway Island - it was just the most relaxing trip. Lots of swimming and eating with the highlight being a speedboat Dolphin Safari. Seeing the dolphins in their natural habitat is something that my daughter still talks about. When my daughter was six and I was six months pregnant, we went to the States, focussing mostly on Disneyland and Las Vegas. Disneyland, it would go without saying, was amazing and my daughter was blown away – everyday was more excitement and discoveries. Las Vegas, you may say an odd choice for a family holiday? Not at all, Vegas has so much to offer everyone. Everything is on a big and over-the-top scale that just walking on the strip can be fun in itself. The shopping in Vegas is just wonderful - so so many shops and so many bargains, any fellow shopoholics would be in

heaven, as I was. But as for the kids, well there’s the Grand Canyon just a short half day helicopter trip away as well as M&M World (my daughter’s fav – we had several visits), Coke World, Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay, Siegfried & Roy’s Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat at the Mirage Hotel and Casino, not to mention the Bellagio Fountains and visits to Rick’s Restorations and The Gold and Silver Pawn Shop from TV fame - the list could go on and on. The only problem you will have is trying to fit it all in. This year with a seven year old and a 14 month baby, we headed off for Phuket in Thailand. Direct flights from Melbourne made the trip a breeze and to say that Phuket is family friendly is an understatement – they love children and were quite fascinated with my blue eye, blonde haired baby (so much so that we got through lines quicker nearly everywhere that we went – bonus). Our resort

catered to all of our needs and getting around was as easy as it was fun – the pram fitted in the tuk tuk’s making it all a breeze. The highlight of the trip was our speedboat day trip to James Bond Island, where we took in the fabulous views, went canoeing and

feed fish in crystal clear warm water. We didn’t want to come home!! So if you are thinking about travelling with kids – don’t hesitate, the world is out there for you all to explore together. Melissa Stafford

COVER Dubai - a shopper’s paradise steeped in intriguing culture Dubai simply is not a case of ‘what you see, is what you get’ or should I say, ‘what you hear/read/watch should not be taken for gospel.’ Despite what you may have been led to believe, Dubai is an eye opening innovation of the travel world that has transformed very quickly over the past 50 years. considering a stopover in Dubai to spend a minimum of three nights which will be very quickly filled with: visiting gold and spice souks, the Dubai Museum and Sheikh Mohamed Center of Cultural Understanding, 4WD Dune Safari and dinner at a traditional Bedouin camp complete with Henna Tattoos, belly dancing and camel rides, A trip to the top of the famous Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, or perhaps world renowned high tea or underwater dinner at the Burj Al Arab, a visit to Kidzania and Wild Wadi water park for the kids, Dubai Fountain show, some R & R at the beach………..mmm, I think I need more time. Squashing the myths of Dubai - let’s just say, whilst you still need to be mindful and respectful of local customs and religion, yes, you can drink alcohol in Dubai at licensed premises,

yes, you can have your shoulders exposed, no, you won’t be thrown in jail for holding your partners hand, just relax and soak in the culture and satisfy your

every whim, whatever it may be. (Just a word of warning guys: you may lose your wife in Dubai Mall to the wonderful world of shops, or in my case, your fiancé may come home having bought her own wedding ring at the gold souk). My extended trip to Dubai is just one destination of many that has been very memorable, having been lucky enough to experience and be immersed in many amazing, eye-opening cultures. India being top of the that list, as well as Nepal, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Bali, Malaysia, Singapore and more recently the closer to home New Zealand. But my next couple of trips are taking me in a different direction, to more westernised destinations. In just a few weeks I’ll be taking in the North Island of New Zealand and then the ever popular United States. You could say I am blessed to have found my dream job. Ashlee Cutting

P & L Livestock & Real Estate has grown immensely since this time, expanding both its livestock and real estate sales teams. The real estate arm was boosted by the addition of Peter’s brother Al Lamond in 2007 and Owen’s daughter Brooke, firstly in administration in 2007, and later joining the sales team. The livestock arm welcomed livestock agents Kevin Norman and Garth Manser in 2009 and Garth’s father, Chris Manser in 2013. More recently, Aidan Auld has joined the livestock team to train as a livestock agent. Phil Wood & Tony McGrath can also be seen acting as commission agents for the company. LOCAL Beachport breakwater project nearing completion

Works on the Breakwater at the Beachport Boat Ramp are progressing steadily and nearing completion. The contractor, Teagle Contracting Pty Ltd, has completed the low section of the wall parallel to the shore, which is about 100 metres long. Along with this a navigation aid has been constructed at the end of this section and a nib wall has been constructed from the shore opposite the end of the low breakwater wall. Works are now underway to rebuild the existing breakwater that is parallel to the

boat ramp. The next stage will be to construct a vertical concrete wall on the boat ramp side to accommodate a new pontoon. The final stage will involve the removal of sand from the boat ramp basin prior to installing the pontoons in readiness for opening the boat ramp. The opening date is planned for November 1. Council has also made an application to the South Australian Boating Facilities Fund for a grant for the construction and sealing of the boat ramp car and trailer parking area. If the grant application is successful the work on the car park will be carried out in March next year. In the meantime, council has made application to the Coastal Protection Board for funding to repair the damage left when heavy seas buffeted the Beachport foreshore. Bad weather in June of this year saw the erosion of the beaches north of the Jetty, undermining the “Chambers Way” footpath. The Coastal Protection Board has advised that it will provide funding of $58,000 towards the cost of the repairs. Council’s contribution will include repairs to the footpath and fencing. Works are planned to be carried out this month.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY How to do a fun run (part three)...Things fall apart by Robbie Tansel Over the last two weeks I’ve been reliving my experiences in last year’s Blue Lake “Fun” Run. For those of you who are most observant you will notice that I’m putting quotation marks around the word “Fun” to indicate my feelings that running is not really fun. When I left you last week, I was about two kilometres into my 6.8 kilometre run and things were going pretty well, despite the fact I had done absolutely no training in preparation for the event. Anyway… During this third kilometre of the run I was still getting over the hilly part of the course. It was during this period that I started noticing the first of the ten kilometre runners scooting past. They’d started about fifteen minutes before me and were showing how much fitter they were than me by racing past me on their second lap of the lake. What a bunch of showoffs. I’d thought about taking some music to listen to while I ran but concluded that it would annoy me having it bouncing around in a pocket. I was also of the opinion that I’d like to be alone

with my thoughts. I probably would have reconsidered that decision if I’d known my thoughts were going to be so abusive. “What were you thinking? This is for fit people? You’re a lazy slob?” I would’ve belted someone else if they talked to me like that, but I already had enough problems without harming myself. During the fourth kilometre I lost all feeling in my legs. I was seeing that as a huge positive though because they were hurting like buggery! I’m pretty sure my heart stopped on a couple of occasions but I still couldn’t hear much over the screaming arguments in my head. Thinking about it afterwards, I realised that I didn’t look once at the Blue Lake. In the fourth and fifth kilometres there was no doubt not a bad view but apparently I had other things on my mind. There were other interesting things to look at though. The flying turtles wouldn’t leave me alone. Snappy little clowns kept nipping at my ears. As if I didn’t have enough problems? If only I had a flying unicorn like Ray Martin who rode

past me. Or was it Ricky Martin? Maybe I could have asked that giant who climbed down the beanstalk near the Leg of Mutton Lake. He did look busy though. Also on the negative side, I decided I really needed a drink of water. The problem came when I tried to throw the cup into a bin situated nearby and missed. What’s the protocol in this situation? Do I turn around, pick it up and put it in the bin? I’m not a litterbug after all. But that’s an extra five to ten metres I’m going to have to travel. That could be the difference between completing the event or not. Eventually I did the right thing, picked it up and put it in the bin. KESAB award coming my way As I headed towards the last couple of kilometre the pain had returned to my legs and feet. My lungs were also suffering and my jogging bursts were shortening as my chest started tightening up. In my head I’m pretty sure it’s not a heart attack. Prior to the event I was thinking this downhill section of the course back down Bay Road would be a lot easier but by this stage it’s making absolutely no difference. I was setting myself goals like I was on the way up the hill like, “When I get to that tree I’ll start running again,” but consistently failing to achieve them. My main aim at this stage was to cross the line jogging and having jogged as much as possible down the last stretch. I’d decided prior to the run that it was poor form to sprint to the finish line unless you were actually racing someone for a top ten place or if a workmate, family member or mortal enemy was nearby. I think you seem silly sprinting to the finish to come

146th instead of 147th. The good news was I did reach the finish after about forty seven minutes which was as good as I could have really hoped for. To be honest there was a very genuine sense of satisfaction to even complete it. I’d definitely recommend hanging around after you have finished running. There’s something very satisfying about seeing all the people who look like they should be fitter than you but you beat. Losers. That’s just a joke by the way. As far as I’m concerned everyone who finished their run regardless of the distance is a champion. Without blowing it out of proportion too much, it takes a fair bit of will power to push yourself to the finish. I suffered for my participation for about a week after the run. Not surprisingly my legs were incredibly sore. I was walking like a sixty year old man (not like one of the many very fit sixty year old men who beat me in the fun run obviously. I’m sure they were all fine the next day.) For another week after that I was convinced I had some sort of stress fracture in my foot which was incredibly painful. Obviously my feet are not built to have ninety plus kilos slamming down on top of them for nearly seven kilometres. Gradually the pain left my body leaving me thinking things like, “I should maybe start going for some regular jogs. That’d help my general fitness and have me a little better prepared for next year’s run.” Yes I intend having another go this year. A year on from the run I haven’t yet gone for a single run. It’s easy to come up with excuses. Portland’s chemotherapy unit will be officially opened this week amid growing demand for the service. Fifty two treatments have been delivered since July 1 at an average of five per session. Portland District Health had set a target of 90 treatments for the financial year. The service may be extended to two days per week to cope with the higher than expected demand. Member for Wannon Dan Tehan will officially open the unit at 10.30am on Thursday October 9. Consultant medical oncologist Dr Ian Collins from South West Oncology will also speak at the opening. PDH CEO Chris Giles said the Portland community was appreciating the local service. “Chemotherapy was recognised as being desperately needed in the Portland area and the demand has certainly proved that to be correct,” Ms Giles said. PDH is in talks with South West Oncology about adding a second day of treatment in Portland each week. Ms Giles said the new service had been carefully planned and smoothly rolled out. “The feedback about having a local service has been very positive,” Ms Giles added. “People are appreciating that they don’t have to spend so much time travelling to Warrnambool or beyond for chemotherapy.” The new service fits with the Victorian Cancer Action Plan which aims to deliver care to patients as close to home as possible. The unit has been facilitated by the Barwon South Western Regional Integrated Cancer Service, in collaboration with South West Oncology, South West Healthcare, Barwon Health Cancer Services and Portland District Health. PDH nursing staff have undergone extensive training to support the delivery of chemotherapy. The day stay chemotherapy day unit is sharing facilities with PDH’s recently remodelled dialysis service in south ward.

LOCAL Keeping their precious little loved ones close The Limestone Coast Babywearing group is celebrating Babywearing Week this week. The aim of the week is to celebrate babywearing by coming together as a community to share what babywearing is all about. The group is also looking to a raise money for the Stand Like Stone Foundation by running a raffle. The Limestone Coast Babywearing group is a group of people who are passionate about babywearing and want to share their passion with the community. As a group they meet once a month to share their experiences, passion, slings and other baby carriers, while also teaching and supporting each other in learning new carrying techniques. The group also has a closed facebook group where the babywearing discussion continues between meets. Babywearing is the practice of wearing or carrying a baby in a sling or in another form of carrier and has been practiced around the world for centuries. In Australia babywearing has been gaining popularity with the advent of facebook support groups and youtube demonstration videos as well as being advocated by attachment parenting gurus. “My 15 month only boy has been going through separation anxiety recently and at times hasn’t gone to anyone else or let me put him down,” group member Anna Young said. “Babywearing has allowed me to give him the cuddles he needs right now while also enabling me to get things like washing and cooking done.” Local babywearing consultant and leader of the group Naomi O’Flaherty has pointed out many of the benefits to babywearing for both the parent and the baby, “Parents can be hands free to get on with the tasks of the day while keeping their little one close and, generally, carried babies cry less and are more settled,” she said. Four events have been planned to celebrate keeping precious ones close. When Portland Rotary Club member Belinda White was approached to introduce healthy options to the club menu at this week’s meeting, she couldn’t contain her excitement. For The Tea Tree Gallery owner, and Portland mother, it was a clear indication that the community had not only heard the healthy message but was also ready to implement some real changes. Ms White attributes the change in attitude to the whole of community approach being pushed by SEA Change Portland - Sustainable Eating and Activity Change Portland. Ms White’s “healthy” story has already featured on the SEA Change Portland Facebook page and she was a very popular guest on the one hour SEA Change Portland radio program, held every Monday from 1pm. Being able to explain the reasons for my healthy menu (via Facebook and radio) has given me increased trust and credibility.. I was approached (by Portland Rotary Club) to make the changes necessary in line with the SEA Change Portland healthier options concepts,” she said. Ms White conducted a healthy menu instructional session as part of the

Portland Rotary club’s regular Great South West Walk maintenance working bee, which includes a physical exercise aspect to it as well. “The Great South West Walk working bees includes things like mowing and trimming as part of the walking track maintenance,” Ms White said. “Tonight I introduced healthy options, including choice of chicken fillets, three healthy salads and wholegrain bread. “No butter or tomato sauce was put out. “It was very well received by all… we gave the option of sausages but these were left over and the chicken portions were all eaten.” Ms White said she had attended the Get Active Glenelg2Grampians healthy catering workshops, held earlier this year to introduce healthy BBQ options to local clubs and organisations, and incorporated some of the ideas into her own workshop this week. “Our current president also attended the SEA Change Portland workshops and it has led to a changed way of thinking for the club,” she said. Portland Rotary Club will continue to introduce healthy options as part of their catering.

LOCAL Show secrets of a successful country cook Judith Wood knows a thing or two about baking, and she learned it from one of the best in the game – her own mum, Beryl Hill, who was a 50 year veteran of competition cooking in agricultural shows. “Mum could turn out anything and she did it with a wood stove,” Judith said. “Ginger fluffs were her forte, along with cream puffs and jam rolls, and her secret was to really sift the flour, follow the recipe closely and use her own fresh eggs.” Beryl was the first female president of Mount Gambier’s A&H Show Society, and after she died in April 2013, the Murray and Beryl Hill Memorial Trophy for Most Successful Exhibitor was launched in her and her husband’s memory. There were few surprised in local cooking circles when Judith was named the trophy’s inaugural recipient. “I’m pretty chuffed about that – pretty proud,” she said. Judith has taken her beloved mum’s rolling pin baton and run with it. Earlier this month, she finished second in the 2014 Laucke/CWA Scone Competition at the Royal Adelaide Show, gaining eligibility following a first place at the 2013 Mil Lel Show, and the group final for the South East region. “Scones are very, very hard to do; you’re not allowed to have a seam in them in this particular class and have to use a certain cutter, and you’ve got to have six the same, so I have always got lots of leftovers and plenty of takers,” she said. Her winning roll is expected to continue at this month’s Mount Gambier A&H Society Spring Show, as the list of classes that she has entered is extensive: six queen cakes with currants on top, six rock buns, six yo yos, carrot cake, banana cake, jubilee cake, light fruit cake, boiled fruit cake, sultana cake, rich sultana cake, genoa cake, chocolate cake, plain sponge, ginger fluff, plate of shortbread, plum pudding, pavlovas, and sweet and savoury muffins. (Not to

mention the nominations for 23 different classes of jams and preserves.) And you can forget about fancy kitchens with all the mod cons; Judith is a Housing Trust tenant, which gives her limited choice with appliances. Her current home has a gas oven, which is new baking ground. “I had never used one before, but I’m getting the hang of it - any old oven will do; you just need to follow the recipe,” she said. “If it’s not perfect, I don’t sweat – I won’t do something 10 or 11 times; it’s not my style – I can get through on a lot of seconds.” The Kenwood Chef mixer Judith inherited from her mum may just be her secret weapon. “I always say it’s the power of the Kenwood; the power that it puts out doesn’t match the ones that you get today; this one was made to last,” she said. “And I also believe in being patient – beat your eggs and sift your flours well.” Judith classifies her son, Geoffrey, 23, as one of her biggest competition threats. “He’s going to be the next grandma – he’s into cream puffs and ginger fluffs,” she says. Daughter Laura, 19, is also a dab hand in the kitchen, while her youngest, Ben, aged 11, is proving “hard to get started”. “He’s more into the rides at this stage, but we’ll get him there.”

Sons & Mothers premiered in a sold-out season at the 2012 Adelaide Fringe Festival to 5-star reviews and several coveted Fringe Awards including Best Theatre Production and Best in Fringe. Adelaide Production Company No Strings Attached creates original theatre through the unique perspectives of its disabled performers. The play Sons and Mothers was written and directed by No Strings artistic associate Alirio Zavarce in collaboration with the performers. No Strings Attached Producer PJ Rose said Sons & Mothers puts the humanity of disability centre stage providing professional work for disabled artists whilst presenting new stories. “The show is conceived for general audiences of all ages, but it will also appeal to

disabled audience members who seldom see their own experiences on the public stage,” she said. It will also appeal to the broader community who will gain unique insight into what it means to have a disability. Adelaide production company POP Pictures filmed the entire creative development of Sons & Mothers. Their feature film (also titled Sons & Mothers) premiered in October 2013 as part of the Adelaide Film Festival. (View trailer at www.sonsandmothers.com). The film is an intimate look into the triumphs and stumbles of unconditional love. Both the play and the film will touch everyone who ever had a mother. This project is supported by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body. SA Government support for No Strings Attached Theatre of Disability is provided via Arts SA and the Department for Communities & Social Inclusion. A documentary of the making of the play Sons and Mothers will be shown at the Portland Arts Centre on Monday at 1pm and again on Thursday at 7.30pm. Open to all. Admission free. The cast of Sons and Mothers will also hold a workshop for disability clients of Kyeema and TAFE on Friday prior to the performance.

Motor LOCAL A program that is helping hundreds of disengaged young people in the Limestone Coast is calling on the local community for further funding and resources to develop a youth health service model. The Innovative Community Action Network (ICAN) program run across the state and in the Limestone Coast is a DECD initiative to reengage young people in learning who have either completely disengaged from school or are at serious risk of doing so. Chairperson, Viv Maher, said the Limestone Coast ICAN Management Committee would commit an initial $110,000 to establish a pilot youth health service model for the region to support a future application for headspace, and was gauging both interest and potential support from the broader community. “We want to support the establishment of a service that delivers healthcare, as well as physical, emotional and social support for young people living in the region,” Viv Maher said. “It would also offer group programs and workshops and community education. “By offering all these services under one roof, we are hoping to help get young people more involved with their community, which can help lead to better educational outcomes.” The local ICAN Committee is currently supporting 466 Flexible Learning Option (FLO) students who are supported by qualified case managers, and utilise flexible learning arrangements. The idea of a much needed youth health service will contribute to breaking the cycle of school disengagement by supporting health needs and developing confidence and life skills.
