COVER Raising Last year the South East Crohn’s Group decided the best way to instigate some serious fundraising was to hold a music festival and the Break The Silence Be The Change Music Festival was a huge hit, raising more than $2000 on a day when most of their attractions were rained out by the inclement weather. This year, the group has its fingers crossed for better weather on March 22 as it has put together a program of 16 bands for the festival which will be held at Centrals Soccer Club on Bishop Road. Aversions Crown, a band from Queensland that has just returned from a European tour is one of the headline acts, while crowd favourite from 2013 - two time award winning Adelaide band Kineman Karma - is returning and will be a seven piece not

There is also plenty of local talent on the bill with Jason & Christy Wallace, Melanie Weistra, Kane Stuckey, The Jacks, Wilson & Flint and Streamlyne. Nancy Bates is another big name on the program, having just toured with acclaimed indigenous artist Archie Roach. The day runs from 12pm-11.30pm and tickets are $15 a head and

demonstrations, Mayfair Singers, Synergy dancers, Penny Bonney, fire twirlers and plenty of fun for the kids, including face painting and a jumping castle. Tickets can be pre-purchased and the pre-purchased ticket holders go into the draw for a $150 voucher from SA Tattoo & Body Piercing. Money raised goes to both the major and smaller projects on the SE Crohn’s Group’s agenda. They are raising money to fund an IBD nurse and a gastrologist, while on a smaller scale, the money helps fund the information packs the group puts together for newly diagnosed sufferers. The promotion of last years’ event attracted new members to the group and already the 2014 festival has done the same. “There are so many people in this area suffering from Crohn’s disease,” festival founder and director Sonya Watson said. “It’s a tough condition to deal with and treatment means travelling long distances so we really want to be able to raise awareness of the disease as well as money and of course have a really great day.” The after party for over 18s is at Shadows Nightclub with free entry when you produce your festival ticket. dogs set to headline SE Field Days

The South East Field Days at Lucindale has been selected to host the 2014 Pedigree/Elders Australian Yard Dog Championships.

It is the first time since 2008 that this prestigious event has been held in South Australia. “Kelpie Korner” in the north western corner is the site to

enjoy the skill and action. Top dogs and stockmen from all Australian States will converge on the venue to compete

for lucrative prize money, trophies and the honour of being crowned the best yard dog in Australia. It is expected that over two hundred dogs, their handlers and support teams will travel to Lucindale. Two courses will operate with the South East Rural Contracting Encourage, the Naracoorte Hotel/ Motel Maiden, the Jase’s Fencing Novice and the RJC Evans & Co Improver classes being contested in the Norton Gates Yards. The Pedigree SE Field Days Classic for dogs that have won a novice trial since March 2013 and the Lucindale Engineering Open event which is also the qualifying round for the Pedigree-Elders Australian Championship will be conducted on the challenging western course. The trials will commence on Wednesday, March 19, with the SE Field Days Classic and the Maiden class. The Open class and qualifying round for the 2014 Australian Yard Dog Championship & the Novice class will begin on Thursday, March 20. Friday will see the completion of the qualifying round and Novice class followed by the Improver class. On Saturday the 2014 Australian Yard Dog Championship will begin

with the top 25 dogs vying for a place in the final 10. Several previous winners of the AYDA Championship will compete ensuring an exciting and professional event. These include the current champion Gogetta Package with his handler Joe Spicer from Victoria. Other past winning handlers looking to add another championship to their trophy cabinet are Kevin Howell & Michael Johnston from New South Wales & Rex Hocking from South Australia. Ian O’Connell and Rod Cavill, from Victoria, have the daunting task of judging the Open & Championship, with Lyndon Cooper from Kingston judging the Improver, Gary Sharrock from Victoria judging the SEFD Classic, John Latty from Victoria judging the Novice, Peter Darmody from New South Wales Judging the Maiden & Darryn Hannah from Victoria judging the Encourage. Excellent grassed facilities for the viewing public are available at a site regarded as one of the most attractive and challenging trial venues in Australia. The yards are designed to replicate many of the tasks that working dogs undertake everyday. I continue to be firmly of the opinion that there is a reason that red is the colour of danger, red is the colour of stop and it also happens to be the colour most often associated with love and Valentine’s Day. I must say that I’ve never been a fan of Valentine’s Day but it has become even more trying since the arrival of our little bundle of disaster, Shaquille. You might think that the arrival of a new member of your family might fill your home and lives with even more love, making Valentine’s Day an even more special occasion. If you did think that you would obviously be a person who has spent their life living in some sort of dream universe where children don’t exist. Or single. Anyway, I thought I’d give you all a bit of an idea of the difference between preShaquille Valentine’s Day and life ruined since the arrival of Shaquille

Valentine’s Day. Pre Shaquille, Donna and I might have enjoyed a relaxing sleep in before Donna eventually got up to make me breakfast in bed. This year Shaquille jumped up and down on my head for half an hour before I decided that I might as well go and get him his breakfast, despite the fact that it was 5.30am. Before Shaquille, I may have bought Donna some lovely flowers as part of a romantic day devoted to each other. This year we have a child. Donna decided that what would allow her to have a pleasant day was if she locked Shaquille and me in the backyard. My instructions were to weed around the flowers in the garden, make sure Shaquille didn’t hurt himself and “don’t dare think about coming inside and disturbing the peace and quiet”. When we were finally allowed back inside later in the afternoon I was significantly sweaty and dirty. I suggested that we could maybe have a romantic shower. Donna took one look at the creature next to me who had been making mud pies for a large part of the afternoon

and informed me that I would be having a bath with him. Things went from bad to worse when shortly after getting in the water I found a Polly Waffle floating next to me. Speaking of Polly Waffles, do they actually still make them? Despite the mental image associated with what I just described, I’d still love a Polly Waffle now that I’ve mentioned it. My little buddy proceeded to scream up a storm for the next three hours despite the fact he needed to go to sleep and I really needed some tea. The promised special dinner never found its way out of the fridge and into the fry pan, and eventually I was dispatched for the not quite as romantic fish and chips. Mind

you, Donna did say I could have both chicken and plain salt on my chips. That was despite the fact she had told me previously how ridiculous it was and that chicken salt has plain salt in it anyway. We did make it to bed eventually when I suggested…something you’ll just have to use your imagination about. Her response was typically succinct and to the point. “Remember what happened last time. That’s how we got into this trouble. Do you really want two of these parasites in our house?” Who says romance is dead? I’m going to start planning next year’s Valentine’s Day now. Portland has a strong and progressive modified car scene. Through the efforts of the South Coast Raceway their facility has grown to become a multipurpose venue and this was evidenced on 15 February 15 when the facility hosted the VPW Gazzanats Tri-Series. The Tri-Series was established by Gary Myers and Clint Ogilvie, both legends of the Australian burnout scene, and Portland was the final event of the series. The one day event incorporates a show and shine, go-whoa, powerskid, track cruising and burnouts. While the event has individual awards it also recognises consistency across all events and the overall Tri-Series burnout winner, thanks to series sponsors Liqui Moly, VPW, Meguiars, Shannons and Street Machine Magazine, receiving a return trip for 2 to America. Gates opened at 7am for scrutineering with on track action at 10am. The mix of cars entered was vast, from a Suzuki Mighty Boy to an 1800 horsepower supercharged Falcon, and while some cars only came for the show and shine most wanted to hit the track for some fun in a controlled and safe environment. With people coming from all over the country to participate or watch the event it

provides a massive economic boost to the Portland community. One competitor came from Townsville just to do burnouts. The main event was the burnout competition and needing to score well over the three events, with this being the last round, added a unique dimension to the day and some of the biggest names in the burnout scene came to play. South Coast Raceway would never before have hosted this many high quality cars at the same time. Event and Tri-Series presentations were held to a sold out crowd at Portland’s RSL where Matty Power was named Burnout Champion, from Michael Chomenko and Aaron Doutch. CYCLING State Luke Wight (pictured) is in Sydney this week enjoying his first taste of State representation at the National Track Cycling Championships. The 13 year old is part of the South Australian Under 15 team that will compete in two time trial events and two scratch races. The Tenison Woods College Year 8 student has been working on an individual training program since gaining selection on January 31 and spent one weekend earlier this month training in Adelaide before flying to Sydney Monday to train with the team ahead of the official racing which starts on Wednesday. He has been training twice a day as he starts to carve what is still a young career – he has only been in the saddle for three seasons, making 2013/14 is his fourth. His father Mark was a talented cyclist in Victoria – the family hails from Echuca – and when they moved to Mount Gambier Mark wanted to keep riding and so the family all got involved at the local club. Luke also plays for football for North but it is cycling where he is looking to make

POWER LIFTING One Yana Sim is a new kid on the block and after her first couple of power lifting competitions she quickly established herself as a star on the rise. Her recent achievements at a Mildura competition have not just reinforced that opinion but she more closely resembles a shooting star or a meteor. She smashed her own expectations and that of her Canadian coach. After 13 months of lifting and only seven months competing, Yana Sim is on the verge of national team selection, in a sport where she is competing against people who have been plying their power lifting craft for a number of years. The Mildura Open earlier this month proved Yana’s earlier success was no fluke. “I lifted 130kg on my first lift and I felt so comfortable I knew I could really push it,” Yana said. She went on to lift 137.5kg on her second lift and 145 on her third and final lift. Her form was as impressive in the bench press – starting with 62.5kg then lifting a personal best lift of 67.5kg . “I felt really strong ,” Yana said. She then attempted 72.5kg but with some chalk in her eye, her focus waned

and while it didn’t register as a legal lift, a PB and the knowledge she was not far away from topping 70kg made it another promising performance. With lifts of 140, 150 and 157.5kg in the dead lift, it’s no wonder she walked away with the gold medal. Having her coach at the competition certainly helped, with the encouragement and advice he was giving during ad between lifts. “It was really good to have him there because it kept me really focussed,” Yana said. “He definitely kept my head straight.” So straight, Yana won the competition by 47kg – a huge margin at this level of power lifting. It has her currently ranked as number one in Australia – a battle she leads by 22.5kg. And the improvement since competing in October is immense. She lifted a total of 315kg at that competition, improving that by 55kg to record a total of 370kg. The nationals are in May in Melbourne and the Health & Fitness Expo and Yana has her sights firmly on topping the

400kg mark. Her aim is to compete internationally and hopefully gain a place at the World Titles in June in Johannesburg, in South Africa. “I definitely want to be competing internationally by the second half of the year,” she said. “I want to represent Australia.” And that’s one of the reasons she wants to push hard through her Sheiko training regime to consistently lift plus-400kg. “That’s what you need to be lifting to be competitive at the Worlds,” Yana said. “You don’t to go to a competition like that if you’re not going to be right up there.” One of the things Yana is loving about power lifting is how supportive the sport is as a whole. “It’s an individual event but everyone is so supportive and wants

you to do well and really congratulate you when you do a good job,” she said. “I have all my goals but my main objective is to keep doing PBs.” Given she was aiming for a 350kg total and amassed a further 20kg, it’s safe to say the work she is doing is producing those every improving results. And while he is not intending to compete at this stage, Yana’s husband Jarrod has started lifting with her. “Knowing how my training feels has made him even more supportive of what I’m doing,” Yana said. CRICKET Skippers Both the victorious and vanquished skippers in Sunday’s division one T20 final have called for a review of the settling of tied games in future seasons. HAT TRICK FOR YOUNG KARATE CHAMP Connor Prior is a champion in karate and has nmow shown signficant prowess in cricket - claiming a hat trick in a recent under 12 game of Mount Gambier & District Cricket Association action. It was also impressive because no other fieldsman was involved - it was all Connor in all four of the wickets he took on the day. Playing against North Gambier Black team at Malseed Park, Connor was bowling his first over of a his three over spell, claimed a wicket on second ball (caught and bowled), followed by ball 4,5 and 6 (all bowled). He finished with the tidy figures o 4/7 from his three overs, icluding one maiden, Aged 11, Connor is good all-rounder who always trains hard to improve, recently competing in the Mount Gambier Under 13 team in the South West cricket tournament in Portland.

CRICKET South It was a final short on runs but plentiful in highlights as South Gambier claimed the 2013/14 Twenty20 title at Frew Park on Sunday. Some may have queried the decision of North Gambier to win the toss and bowl but tight bowling and regular wicket taking placed the decision in the class of genius by skipper Mitch Lewis. Aside from a less than convincing 15 from skipper Robbie Drenthen, South’s top order was all at sea against the pace, variation and discipline of the Tigers bowlers and by the half way point, the Maroons sat at a dismal 5/35. Damien Kenny was the destroyer early, removing arguably the most dangerous trio in David Somerfield, Kieran Ashby and Nick Cruise. The middle order had no joy either as Matt Walmsley-Pace bamboozled with his spin and with two overs to bowl South had managed only 7/78. It took until the fourth over for South to find the boundary through Drenthen and to the 18th over before Alex Hentschke cleared the fence and in the low scoring contest a boundary to Josh Thompson and sixes to both Dewain Barrett and Jack Capewell were like gold for the South total. He, along with Ashby and Barrett, teamed up for the bowl off, where hitting the stumps is the only thing that matters. Ashby smashed his first delivery into the stumps before missing by a coast of varnish with his second, while Barrett was unable to register a hit before Cruise also collected the woodwork with his opening delivery to set North a target of three hits to win. Silvy, the hero with the bat with his man of the match winning performance of an unbeaten 60, narrowly missed the stumps on both occasions before Alex Bowd notched up one bowled. Mount Gambier Swim Club had its best SA Country Swimming Championship, coming away with a total of 31 medals. Fourteen swimmers represented the club and despite being one of the smallest competing clubs, Mount Gambier Swim Club finished sixth out of the 26 competing clubs. Luke Janssen was one of the stand out performers, coming away with two gold medals from

his first State Country Championships, the young backstroker also picking up two bronze medals. The club’s 16 and under girls medley relay team dominated their event, taking gold by a margin of 25 metres. The team included Jade Opie, Laura Gazzard, Emily Gazzard and Emerson Aberely. The third placing by the 12 and under boys relay team was also a highlight given the

competing swimmers in the Mount Gambier team were aged 9, 10 and 11, significantly younger than most of their competition. The bronze medal winning team included Henry Muller, Jack Kleinig, Archie Muller and Luke Janssen. Superfish competitors Davies and Mia Kleinig both recorded personal best times in their events which was another pleasing aspect of

the championships. Mount Gambier is hosting the 2015 Swim SA Country Championships from January 9-12 at the Mount Gambier Aquatic Centre. It brings in approximately 400 swimmers and 1000 people in total, so is great for the town. CLUB STALWART HONOURED The 5th Annual Bevon Memorial Day was held on Thursday in memory of a stalwart of the Millicent Bowling Club. The day was held in conjunction with the Wattle Range Funerals 2-4-2 and the winning teams were Alan Strother and Peter Varcoe (30+1), Peter Hyland and Bill Burdon (30+1), Ray Doecke and Bruce Pettman (30+3), Malcolm McRobert and Lindsay Warneke (30+11), Ron Trewin and Brian Atkinson (31+5) and, in fourth place were John Drew and Denis Clifford (31+7). Beth Turner presented the consolation winners and the top three teams with their prizes. They were, in third place Jim Earl and Ed Fitter (31+9), in second place Bill Cattanach and Jeff Hollingsworth (32+3) and finishing on top were David Botting and Bill Davis (33+7) with the consolation prize going to Paul Ryan and Wayne Burris. Not satisfied with one prize, Bill Cattanach also won the Chris’s Barber Shop haircut draw. The club is grateful for the continuing support of the event by players and to Beth Turner and her family for the five years of sponsorship of this day. WHAT A DAY OUT CLASS (Community Living and Support Services) is a not-for-profit, charitable organisation that supports people with disabilities to become more involved in their community. Providing services to people living throughout the Adelaide Hills, Fleurieu Peninsula, Southern Metro, Kangaroo Island, Renmark and South East regions, CLASS is a well-known and respected organisation with the head office based in Strathalbyn. On Wednesday, February 19, the Millicent Bowling Club opened the Scott’s Green for a group from the CLASS Day Options Program to turn their hands to the wonderful sport of Lawn Bowls. It is intended that this will be a monthly outing for the group & the Millicent Bowling Club welcomes the opportunity to assist CLASS in this endeavour.
