Thank you so much for taking the time to read this third edition of my country footy season review.
As which each season when I’ve published this review the fantastic feedback, I’ve received always gives me the energy to create the next edition for you.
With the growth of coutryfootyscores.com over the past few seasons and the expansion to include integrated scoring for over 30 more country football leagues from all around Australia. This means more match reports, scores and ladders available for every country football league around the country each weekend. Each weeks also sees the Victorian edition of the ‘Weekly Wrap’ which comes our on a Monday or Tuesday each week during the season.
This always means creating even more news and stats to explore for everyone via the updated match centres focussing on each state. This review also includes a section with a summary for each state and a list of each of their Senior football premiers from this season.
While most of the information within can be found on countryfootyscores.com, several parts have been created just for this season overview. Please note, there is a lot of data and information to go through to compile all this. I have tried to ensure the accuracy of it all.
every Premiership
However I am aware there still may end up being some typos, mistakes or miscalculations, so I apologise in advance if this is the case. I am a 1 man production team, so if there are any glaring errors, please let me know so I can rectify them.
Putting this together has been a great way to reflect of the totality of this years season across the state. This season has seen it’s fair share of challenges, controversy, celebrations and joy for many. For all the successes and challenges that country footy and netball clubs and communities face and may face into the future, I’d like to acknowledge all those volunteers who work so hard to keep clubs up and going. Thank you for doing what you do.
As the site has celebrated it’s 26th season this year, I would personally like to thank everyone who visits, feedbacks and enjoys what the site is all about - sharing information for those who love and support country footy and netball from wherever you are in the world. I love that this ‘hobby’ of mine brings so much joy to others.
Finally, I hope you enjoy reading the review as much as I did putting it together. As always I have a couple of new ideas to hopefully bring to fruition in the not too distant future to share as well. But more about them next year.
Here’s to a great season in 2026!
Cheers - Glenn
The current and future make up of the second oldest Victorian country football league, the Bendigo FNL, has been a hot topic all year. The league is down to 8 teams after Maryborough FNC went into recess for this season and the move of Kyneton FNC to the Riddell & District FNL at the end of 2023. Gisborne FNC fulfilled the appropriate requirements to move back to the Ballarat FNL and was good to go until the Bendigo FNL appealed the move and won At this stage Gisborne remains in the league, but is also exploring all avenues to leave Broadford FNC, still in recess for the past two season are due to enter in 2026 but despite a coach, announcement progress news has been quiet while Maiden Gully YCW FNC are hoping to join in 2027. It will be an interesting watch over the summer months.
We could write a book for this topic alone this season. There were multiple clubs who have looked to move from one league to another for season 2026 Drouin FNC, Gisborne FNC, Hay FNC, Macorna FNC, Maiden Gully-YCW, Maryborough FNC, Morwell East FNC, Moulamein FNC, Murrabit FNC, Officer FNC, Pakenham FNC, Ultima FNC, Upwey Tecoma FNC, Wandella FNC and Wandin FNC were all involved in exploring moves. As it stands, all except the forced moves of the Golden Rivers FNL teams (see more below) have been denied and in Morwell East FNC’s case, denied for a third straight time! Depsite Gisborne FNC and Drouin FNC having successful applications made and accepted by their potential new leagues, appeals by their current leagues have blocked the moves. There may be more to play out yet.
The eagerly anticipated Northern Futures Project report was released, with its recommendations for football in the region The Central Rivers Leagues Board, with support from AFL Central Victoria, presented eight key recommendations designed to address declining participation and operational challenges across the Golden Rivers FNL and the Central Murray FNL. Ultimately a recommendations was to conclude and celebrate the Golden Rivers FNL at the end of 2025, encouraging Golden Rivers FNL clubs to pursue sustainable futures through transfers to appropriate leagues or to explore amalgamation opportunities with neighbouring clubs As it stands all clubs, except for the Loddon Valley FNL bound Macorna FNC, will continue on in the Central Murray FNL in 2026
Every club works hard to put themselves in a position to win a grand final and set that up with a double chance. However sometimes that hard work evaporates in a straight sets final exit. So spare a thought for the following sides who all expreicned that terrible feeling this season: Belmont Lions SC, Cohuna FNC, East Point FNC, Frankston YCW FNC, Gordon FNC, Lavington FNC, Longwarry FNC, Lorne FNC, Mulwala FNC, Newtown & Chilwell FNC, Nhill FNC, Pakenham FNC, Pearcedale FNC, Talbot FNC Torquay FNC, South Warrnambool FNC, Woori Yallock FNC. It would be an even more bitter pill to swallow for Cardross FNC, Diggers Rest FNC, Dunnstown FNC and Merrivale FNC who all manage to finish top of their respective ladders before crashing straight out with two consecutive finals defeats.
Some massive losing streaks came to an end this season, with none bigger than for Bunyip FNC who took a winless streak of 37 with them when they moved from the West Gippsland FNC to the Ellinbank and District FNL The streak grew to 46 before ending in round 10 and they backed up with another win two weeks later. Caramut FNC broke through after 42 straight losses while Melton South FNC and Portland FNC ended 40 and 33 game losing runs respectively. Harrow Balmoral FNC experienced defeat for the first time in 43 games while Congupna FNC and Waaia FNC had their successful 33 and 28 winning runs come to an abrupt end in their leagues respective Grand Finals Currently our active leaders are Gormandale FNC with 63 losses in a row and Nar Nar Goon FNC on 27 consecutive wins
“Every football season has its fair share of news, issues, controversies and feel good stories Whilst it would be impossible to list them all, here’s 10 talking points (in no particular order or preference) from the 2025 season.”
The Wimmera FNL A Grade Elimination Final between Ararat FNC and the Southern Mallee Thunder FNC saw scores locked at 47 apiece at the end of regulation time, thus sending the game into overtime. With the subsequent time played, Southern Mallee were able to win 62 to 55 However an investigation via the match video recording showed it was in fact Ararat winners at the end of regulation time, 48-47 Despite an appeal, the Wimmera FNL has decided to let the overtime result stand as the scorecards had been signed by both captains. Appeals didn’t help North Ballarat and Coleraine FNC’s when it was found after both clubs reserves teams recorded comfortable wins in the repective leagues Elimination Finals only to have the results overturned due to playing ineligble players.
A decision made during the week leading up to the final round of matches in the Omeo and District FNL saw a game abandoned just days before it was due to be played The game between the fourth placed Bruthen FNC and ladder leaders Swan Reach FNC was called off due to the potential of a “community issue” in the local area that had the potential to put the safety of spectators and players at risk. As a result each club was awarded 2 points. With the remaining games being played on the Saturday, a win by Buchan FNC against Swifts Creek FNC elevated them into fourth place and ultimately the finals, as the win saw them overtaking Bruthen FNC who ended up finishing in fifth and therefore missing the finals
The Riddell and District FNL welcomed country Victoria’s first new stand alone club since Berwick Springs FNC debuted in the Outer East FNL for the 2020 season. The Gisborne Giants FNC had to wait until a Round 5 victory over Lancefield FNC to sing the club song for the first time. In a tough first season, they Giants would only get to sing the song 1 further time in Round 11. It would be a different first year for the newly merged entity in the North Central FNL, the Calder United Lions FNC that come together via the amalgamation of the Wycheproof-Narraport and Nullawil FNC’s The Lions finished the season in second place on the ladder and won through to the end of year decider, where they would complete the fairy tale of winning a premiership cup in the first year of existence.
This season saw quite a few long standing premiership droughts end for clubs across the state. Trentham FNC in the Mary borough Castlemaine District FNL and North Warrnambool FNC in the Hampden FNL both broke 31 year run of outs Closed behind were two clubs from the North East, who had major upset wins In the Murray FNL, Cobram FNC (27 years) defeated the almost unbackable Congupna FNC, while in the Picola and District FNL it was Katamatite FNC (24 years) denying Waaia FNC a three peat. In the Ovens and King FNL, Bright FNC hoisted the premiership cup for the first time in 21 years, while Warburton Millgrove FNC (19 ) and Mildura FNC (18) also had long overdue flag celebrations.
Every years we see more and more former AFL players making a return to their home clubs in the bush or seeing country leagues as a chance to continue playing and maybe give something back. This year was no exception with players such as Dyson Heppell heading to his home town of Leongatha FNC to not only play in a premiership side, but add two best on ground medals to his haul on the day as well. Brent Harvey helped Trentham FNC to their first flag in 31 years while James Frawley was part of a first ever club flag for Devon Meadows FNC in the MPNFNL Tom Clurey returned from Port Adelaide to help his old side Katamatite FNC win the Picola and District FNL flag while Callum Brown and Lewis Taylor won league Best and Fairests in the the Goulburn Valley and Hampden FNL’s repsectively

Leagues
This season saw the overall weekly average winning margin for the Home and Away season increase marginally from 56 90 in 2025 to 56 91
There were only 6 rounds where leagues had an average winning margin under 10 points down from 9 last year and 34 rounds down from 57 in 2024 where the average winning margin for individual leagues was 100+ points.
Whilst there was little difference in the Home and Away season average winning margins between seasons, most finals average winning margins decreased on last season
The Grand Finals proved to be the closest contests this season, while the biggest decrease from last year was in the Qualifying Finals across the state Overall Grand finals results for this year were almost 4 points closer than in 2024.
