Welcome Welcome to the November issue of Sussex Business Times This month we’re talking connection, both digital and human. Our cover feature focuses on Lightning Fibre and the
broadband revolution transforming homes and businesses
across Sussex. We meet the team powering “Digital Britain” from the ground up, building next-generation infrastructure, championing local talent and showing how true
community impact can sit side-by-side with cutting-edge innovation. It’s a story of bold investment, big ambition and a business rooted firmly in our region’s future.
Beyond the fibre cables, this issue shines a light on the
people and ideas keeping Sussex moving forward, from
creative industries and leadership visibility to finance, law,
technology, and the growing conversation around wellbeing and workplace culture. Inside you’ll find: • Velvet’s 25-year milestone, a family-run fashion store celebrating style, resilience and community.
• Sussex Surveyors’ 23-year success story and new Hove office launch.
• Thomson Snell & Passmore advising Adelphi Group on their latest acquisition.
• Brighton & Hove Living Wage Campaign marking its 1,000th employer with IKEA Brighton.
• Features on devolution, finance planning ahead of the November Budget, cyber insurance, AI, leadership and more.
• Event highlights from The Inner Circle launch at Falmer Court, the Big Business Breakfast Club, and the unforgettable Alchemist Ball 2025.
As we approach the end of the year, this issue is a reminder that progress isn’t just about technology, it’s about connection: between people, businesses, and the ideas that move us all forward.
Thank you for reading and for continuing to share the stories that make Sussex such an extraordinary place to live, work and grow. Sam Thomas,

Hove’s independent destination store,
Velvet, celebrated a remarkable
milestone this October — 25 years
of stylish fashion, accessories, and
homeware. To mark the occasion, the team hosted a party and discount
shopping event, bringing together
loyal customers and friends for a night to remember.
The Velvet story began in 2000 when
Emma Draper opened the very first store in Brighton’s North Laine in partnership with her mother, Iris. The Velvet name moved around the city a few times before settling at its current Hove location in 2009.
Over the years, Velvet has never stood still. The team has adapted, evolved,
and embraced change — always ready to try something new and unafraid to
move on when things weren’t quite right.

Human Connection That AI Can’t Replicate Why empathy, intuition, and human creativity still outperform automation in business and marketing By Alessandro Calzolari, Author of Empathic Marketing Artificial
Monthly News
Intelligence has revolutionised
how we create, communicate,
and consume information. It
can process language, generate
content, and automate workflows with remarkable precision.
But… there remains to be a vast difference between processing
words and understanding people. AI can process language. We shape perception. AI generates content.
We craft emotional resonance. AI speaks.
We connect. The distinction isn’t semantic, it’s human. In the age of algorithms,
the ability to build genuine human connection remains the most
powerful differentiator in business. Where AI Still Falls Short…
Beyond empathy and relationshipbuilding, there are critical
dimensions where AI still fails to
match human capability, especially in high-stakes decision-making, strategy, and leadership:
• True Creative Problem-Solving: AI can remix, but it can’t
reimagine. It lacks intuition, lived experience, and the ability to
draw meaningful insights from
unstructured ideas or ambiguity. •E thical Judgement: Data doesn’t

content, every strategy is tailored to how people actually think, feel, and decide.
Clients often describe working with me as putting their business through a “washing machine for
hyper-creativity.” It untangles ideas, filters out the noise, and delivers a clear, focused strategy that feels both human and powerful.
Beyond Strategy: Towards Transformation
The real outcome isn’t just a marketing plan; it’s transformation. Clients tell me they leave
our sessions feeling energised, confident, and
credible. That’s the empathic difference, it’s not
just about reaching audiences, but elevating the people behind the brand.
Because in a world where technology is
everywhere, the brands that will stand out are the ones that still feel human.

have morals. AI cannot navigate the nuanced grey areas
where values, integrity, and human judgement matter most. • Cultural Sensitivity: Human connection thrives on
context. AI often misses the emotional and cultural
subtleties that define authentic communication across diverse audiences.
• Adaptive Intelligence: Humans respond in real time, flexing tone, strategy, and empathy based on the person in front of them, not just the data behind them. The Empathic Advantage

manufactured and fitted by PVL UK.
PVL are the UK’s leading specialists in vehicle safety markings, specialising
in emergency services, highways, and
airside vehicles where visibility can mean the difference between life and death.
In February 2018, on a dimly lit stretch
of Heathrow’s airside area, two vehicles
crossed paths with fatal consequences.
16 www.sussexbusinessgroup.co.uk
A British Airways Engineering van, a Renault Kangoo in plain white, was
struck side-on by a Toyota Hilux used by Heathrow’s operations team travelling at about 40 miles per hour. The van driver, John Coles aged 44, tragically died
within an hour of the accident as a result of his injuries.
Investigators found no mechanical issue
with either vehicle. Instead, they pointed to something deceptively simple:
visual interference. On an airport apron
cluttered with floodlights, painted lines, and other moving traffic, the outline of
Coles’ van blended into the background. The coroner’s report, issued in 2023,
called for Heathrow to lead a programme of side-profile lighting, stronger reflective markings and clearer identification for
vehicles crossing runways and taxiways. Heathrow responded with a plan to
upgrade visibility standards for its fleet and those of its operators.

Nick and his team are working with
airports across the world to make sure
that tragedies like the one at Heathrow don’t happen again. He has provided

creative and cultural industries is one of paradox: globally
admired organisations,
often sitting in small towns. A lively mix of tech and art, and an army of micro businesses, but also a fragile, patchy

If we think of the De La Warr Pavilion as
‘a 1935 spaceship’, we get at something important: Sussex hosts venues that are internationally ambitious, and
deeply creative, yet rooted in small
communities. That history has been a
huge asset - think Sussex modernism and the coastal cultural trails - but it hasn’t produced a single, joined-up
system. Partners talk and collaborate, but the business of culture remains
hyperlocal and often competitive. The
risk with larger, pan-Sussex ways of
seeing the region is that the granularity
that makes places like Bexhill, Hastings
and Chichester distinctive gets flattened. A mayoral settlement must defend those local voices while making the case for a coherent regional offer.

at its core, an audit is a crucial process
that brings transparency and assurance to financial matters. Whether you are a business owner, investor, or simply
curious about the financial world, having a basic understanding of audits is a
valuable asset. In this article, we break down what an audit is, why it matters, and how it benefits your organisation.
What is an audit and why does it matter? In simple terms, an audit is an
independent examination of a company’s financial records, transactions, and
internal processes to confirm that they
present a true and fair view of its financial
position. Conducted by qualified auditors, it ensures that financial information is accurate, complies with accounting
beyond simply verifying figures.
It strengthens systems, controls and processes, while offering insights that support better
decision-making. By examining financial statements and
underlying data, auditors provide independent assurance that a
company’s financial position is presented fairly and free from material misstatement.
Audits can also highlight
weaknesses in internal controls or operational inefficiencies,

A kinder, clearer path through separation: why Good Divorce Week matters Good Divorce Week (week beginning Monday 10 November 2025) is a timely reminder that, even in the toughest moments, there is a better way to separate. As a member of
Legal
Resolution, which
is a community of over 6,500 family
justice professionals
committed to reducing conflict, I follow a Code of Practice that puts children’s welfare, clear communication and
problem-solving at the heart of everything I do. So, although we promote this way of working once a year; it’s how I practise, day in and day out.
This year, the theme is about
demonstrating our commitment to
that Code and the constructive role we play in helping families. In plain
terms, it means we prioritise calm over confrontation. It means explaining
options clearly and early, looking for agreements wherever possible, and keeping court as a last resort rather than a first step. For many families,
that approach lowers the temperature, shortens the journey, and protects
26 www.sussexbusinessgroup.co.uk
relationships that will continue long after legal processes end, especially where children are involved.
Why does this matter so much right now?
Our approach matters because the family courts are under immense
pressure. A recent parliamentary report highlights that private law
cases (disputes about arrangements for children) took on average 41
weeks to be concluded through the Court system in 2024, up from 26
weeks in 2018. Even where there
have been small improvements this year, timings remain far above pre-
pandemic levels. The delay isn’t just a statistic; for families it means months
of uncertainty, heightened anxiety and
additional cost. Locally in East Sussex, everyone working in and around the
courts is doing their level best, but the system is stretched.
At the same time, demand remains
consistently high. Ministry of Justice
data shows that tens of thousands of
family cases are started each quarter, equating to well over a thousand new
matters on a typical working day across England and Wales. The average length of those cases has increased by 36%
since 2018. Against that backdrop, it’s clear that delays won’t meaningfully
reduce without better resourcing and smarter ways to help couples earlier.
That’s why, alongside fellow Resolution members, I’m supporting the need for there to be greater investment in early legal information and advice. When
people understand their choices at the
outset, they are far more likely to take a constructive route: mediation, solicitor-
led negotiation or arbitration rather than
becoming trapped in lengthy, adversarial proceedings. Early guidance can de-
escalate conflict, narrow the issues and
keep decision-making closer to the family.
L EGA L SP ON SO R
Brigitte Shakespeare
It also protects court time for the cases that truly need judicial determination.
What does a constructive approach look like in practice?
• Listening first. Every family is different. I start by understanding my client’s
priorities, their children’s needs, their
finances and their living arrangements so advice is tailored rather than “one size fits all”.
• Explaining options early. From
mediation to private FDRs (a form of
early neutral evaluation) and negotiated settlements, I map the routes available, the likely costs and timescales, and when court may still be necessary.
• Keeping children central. The Code of Practice asks us to consider the needs of the whole family, especially the best
interests of children. That means helping parents separate well, reducing conflict
around handovers, and building parenting plans that actually work day-to-day.
• Plain language, clear steps. Legal processes can feel overwhelming. I
make sure my clients know what will happen next and why, using plain English and realistic timeframes.
• Problem-solving mindset. I focus on

steadfast commitment to the people and businesses of Sussex.
A Business Built on People, Not Just Paperwork
Since opening in 2017, Claire Nash Solicitors has quietly grown into
one of Crowborough’s most trusted firms, specialising in private client work - from Wills and Probate to
Conveyancing and Family Law. Their
reputation has been built on qualities that many small businesses will
recognise as the real keys to longevity: consistency, personal service, and local trust.
Founder and Principal Solicitor Claire Nash explains that the move is a natural next step.

For other small business owners
across Sussex, the firm’s journey
holds valuable lessons. Claire Nash
Solicitors started as a small operation with just the principal who had a
strong belief in doing things properly.
Rather than chasing rapid expansion, the business has grown organically - focusing on reputation, repeat
business, and community connection. This kind of sustainable growth is a
model familiar to many Sussex-based entrepreneurs. Whether you run a
vineyard, café, or design studio, the
principles are the same: listen to your clients, adapt to their needs, and
invest in your infrastructure only when it enhances the service you provide. Community at the Core While the move is an exciting business development, its significance runs
deeper. Claire Nash Solicitors is one of a small number of Dementia Friendly
law firms in Sussex, offering home and out-of-hours visits to clients who need extra support. Their new premises at Croham Lodge are designed to be
welcoming, comfortable, and inclusive - not intimidating, as legal offices can sometimes feel.
“This town is where we began, and it remains the heart of our firm,” Nash
adds. “We want local people to feel that this is their law firm approachable, reliable, and
right on their doorstep.” The firm’s
approach stands as a reminder
that community-
based businesses can compete and thrive without losing their

From Consultant to Founder
JLN’s founder, Jonathan Lea, has a unique perspective on the consultant model,
30 www.sussexbusinessgroup.co.uk
having spent several years as a consultant
solicitor himself before establishing JLN as a regulated law firm in 2019.
“Working as a consultant solicitor allowed me to build my own team, grow my client base, and increase revenue and profit, all while enjoying flexibility and autonomy,”
Lea explains. “I created JLN to make that experience even better for others — by providing the systems, support, and
culture that help consultants thrive.” A Proven Hybrid Model
When JLN began, Jonathan was

these consultants have remained with JLN over the last few years, much of the firm’s growth since has instead

managing their own clients and workload. JLN handles all regulatory, compliance, and administrative burdens, including
professional indemnity insurance, billing, IT systems, and client onboarding,
leaving consultants free to focus on client work and growth.
The firm also offers a market-leading fee
share of up to 85% for consultants billing
over £150,000 annually (subject to practice area), ensuring that high performers are properly rewarded. The JLN fee share
otherwise starts at 70% for consultants doing work for their own clients. Cutting-Edge Technology
JLN prides itself on combining legal expertise with innovation. The firm
uses the latest, user-friendly systems, including Clio (and Legl) for case
management, client onboarding, billing, and compliance, to make processes as seamless as possible for both clients and consultants.
Over the past year, JLN has also
integrated powerful enterprise-level
generative AI tools into almost every

Digital Britain; the Broadband Revolution The UK is moving from older copper-based broadband towards “full-fibre” (fibre-to-thepremises) networks, which offer much higher speeds and reliability. The regulator Ofcom set out a regulatory framework aimed at both encouraging investment and enabling competition. The full-fibre roll-out is being driven
largely by private investment. In more
rural or hard-to-reach areas where purely commercial investment is less likely,
there is public funding to fill the gap; this mixed model supports private funding plus public support where needed.
The involvement of private funding and regulatory clarity was critical for the scale and pace of the rollout.
“Four years ago, less than a quarter of
UK homes and offices had access, and it
now stands at nearly seven in 10. It means that people and businesses in nearly all
corners of the country will get faster, better broadband, fuelling economic growth
and enabling technologies like artificial intelligence to benefit everyone.” —

Why Full Fibre Matters - Championed by Government & Chambers Decades ago the internet was a place we visited, now its an environment we all inhabit. Lightning Fibre is dedicated to playing a significant role in the broadband revolution in the UK. A rock solid, hyperfast connection is
essential for consumers, communities,
business performance and public sector services functioning effectively.
Josh Babarinde MP is a well known
supporter of Lightning Fibre, recognising their commitment to delivering high
performance full fibre infrastructure.
His endorsement reflects trust in the company’s ability to enable digital
transformation and support innovation and growth across the business landscape.
“I’m committed to being the vocal and visible champion our town needs and
deserves. Decent broadband is essential for our modern demands; at work, school and at home.
I am particularly impressed by Lightning Fibre’s early adoption of a ‘social tariff’, helping people on means-
tested benefits access this brand new technology. It’s commendable that Lightning Fibre is leading the way
locally for affordable Full Fibre access. The company has already achieved huge respect for the amount of
community support it gives, and I am delighted to support them in marking
another local milestone with the launch of Full Fibre for Hampden Park.”

scheduling, quoting, logging work.
And it’s doing it on the go when you’re not behind a desk, but in the car, onsite, or between jobs.
It’s a shift worth paying attention to. What Is Voice AI Really Capable Of? Voice AI today goes far beyond call
you having to log into anything or write anything down.
For small business owners, especially those juggling operations and service delivery, that’s a big deal.
The Use Case: Not Glamorous,

While business adoption of voice
AI focuses on productivity, there’s a parallel world developing in
the background, one that’s more psychological than operational.
AI companion apps like Replika,
Character.ai, and a growing list of customisable chatbots are being
used by millions of people to hold conversations that are emotional,
personal, even therapeutic. These
aren’t assistants that send invoices
or book meetings. These are digital entities designed to keep you
company. Some are chat-based,
others use voice, and many are built to simulate personalities that evolve over time.
It sounds niche, maybe even
unsettling. But it’s worth paying
attention to because it shows where voice and AI are heading: into our habits, routines, and emotions. days ago. Voice AI helps chip away
at that pile-up, without having to “sit down and do admin”.
Working while moving
Not every job happens at a desk. In fact, for many business owners, work starts
once you’re away from the screen. Voice AI allows for hands-free inputs and realtime action, like dictating job notes or setting reminders mid-task. Reducing drop-offs
How many potential customers go cold because you didn’t get back to them
fast enough? AI assistants can follow up, send info, and even book slots, before the lead disappears.
This isn’t about flashy tech. It’s about
trimming the inefficiencies that quietly steal your time.
And Then There’s the Stranger Side: AI Companions
People are forming real relationships
with these systems. Talking to them
every day. Turning to them for advice,
validation, or a sense of presence. The implications are huge, not just for tech
ethics, but for how we think about work, loneliness, and digital support.
Could future business tools carry
emotional intelligence? Know your
preferences? Detect your stress levels and adapt?
Maybe. We’re not there yet but this
fringe world of AI companions is laying the groundwork.
What’s certain is this: the line between tool and presence is starting to blur. A Few Caveats
This isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution.
1. Environment matters. Background noise, poor reception, and accent variation can still trip up even the best models. Test in the real conditions you’ll use it in. 2. Clarity is critical. Voice works best for clear, routine tasks. For complex processes or nuanced decisions, it still needs human context. Don’t expect it to replace strategic judgement. 3. Data governance can’t be ignored. These tools process sensitive information; names, job details, pricing, and more. Ask where that data’s stored, who has access, and how long it’s retained. It’s not just a privacy concern; it’s a reputational one. 4. Integration is make-or-break. If voice AI sits separately from your existing systems, it quickly becomes extra work. Look for tools that play nicely with your calendar, CRM, email or job management stack. What This Means for Business Owners The broader shift here is simple: less screen time, more work done. We’re heading into a phase where talking, not typing, becomes a practical way to manage admin, especially for those running businesses on the move. It won’t replace deeper thinking or real conversation, but it can absolutely replace repetitive typing, missed reminders, and late-night catch-ups. If you’re always chasing the day, voice AI might help you catch up. Not by doing everything, but by taking enough off your plate that you can focus on the decisions that actually need you.
If you’re considering voice AI in your business, a few things are worth thinking about:

Websites That Work for AI (and Humans Too) If you’ve experienced
Tech & AI
Google’s AI overview, you’ll have spotted
how search is shifting. Instead of the usual
smorgasbord of adverts, images, and blue links, Google now serves the highlights
first, scanning, summarising, and shaping the first layer of information people see before they even reach your site.
That means your next visitor might not be human at all.
And if that sounds a bit sci-fi, don’t
worry. You don’t need to rebuild your entire website for robots, but you do
need to help both people and machines understand what your business does, who it helps, and why it’s credible.
44 www.sussexbusinessgroup.co.uk
The good news? We’ve got some tips to make your website more AI-friendly.
1. Be Transparent When You Use AI Google has been refreshingly clear on this one: it doesn’t mind AI-generated content, so long as it’s helpful,
accurate, and honest. Its ranking
systems focus on what you publish, not how you produced it.
We’re actually rolling out small
disclosure boxes on our blog posts.
They explain why AI was used (usually for structure or inspiration), who the
piece was written for, and what benefit it offers. They’re simple, factual, and
honest, and that honesty helps build
trust with both readers and machines.
It also makes you think more
intentionally about your content process. If you can’t explain why AI was used, it probably shouldn’t have been.
Try a simple exercise: before you publish
your next article, add a simple statement that answers these questions: Who is this content for?
What will they get out of it? How was AI used? Why was it used?
2. Create an LLMs.txt File (it’s not as boring as it sounds)
If that looks like alphabet soup, here’s the plain-English version: an LLMs.
txt file is a simple text document that

happened last month. On Wednesday 22nd October, inside the
beautiful surroundings of Falmer Court, a small group of extraordinary people
gathered around a single table. Olympic champions, serial entrepreneurs, MBEs, OBEs, and some of Sussex’s most
inspiring business leaders, all under
one roof. But this wasn’t your typical networking dinner. It wasn’t about
business cards, small talk, or LinkedIn
connections. This was the official launch of The Inner Circle, an evolution of our Top Table Dinners, created in proud partnership with Handelsbanken. And what a night it was. From Top Table to The Inner Circle For over two years, the Top Table
experiences have been quietly growing

into something magical. Each month, a
hand-picked group of business owners, changemakers, and thought leaders
come together to share food, stories, and connection. The idea was never about business transactions; it was
about conversations that matter, stories that remind us who we are beyond the titles and targets.
The Inner Circle takes that concept to the next level. It’s an invite-only community
designed for leaders who are looking for something deeper. A space where the
masks come off, and the stories come
out. A place where success is redefined not by numbers, but by authenticity, balance, presence, fulfilment, and relationships, the Five Pillars of
Success that underpin everything I do.
times when you realise you’re witnessing the beginning of something special. There was laughter, there was
vulnerability, and there was honesty. People spoke openly about their
challenges as well as their triumphs. We laughed. We listened. We leaned into vulnerability, honesty, and humour.
Because that’s what happens when you bring the right people together in the right environment. Magic.
This wasn’t networking. This was
something real. Something human. A Night to Remember
The evening was made even more special thanks to the people and partners who made it possible.

More Than a Dinner
What struck me most as the evening unfolded was how ready people are for spaces like this. Spaces that go
beyond the surface. In a digital world filled with constant noise, filters,
and algorithms, there is a hunger for
authenticity, for conversations that go beneath the highlight reel.
That’s what The Inner Circle is about. It’s
had also been guests on The Different to hear hundreds of stories from
remarkable individuals. And just like on the podcast, what emerged around the table wasn’t competition, it was connection. Because behind every title, CEO,
founder, Olympian, investor, is a human being with hopes, fears, dreams, and lessons to share.
The Beginning of a Movement
The Inner Circle is just the beginning.
My mission has always been to change the narrative around success and to

As The Inner Circle grows, I hope it becomes a beacon for conscious
leadership and meaningful connection. A
place where ideas are born, collaborations flourish, and friendships deepen. A
community where people come not to sell or be seen, but to share, listen, and grow.
Because in the end, business is not about competition, it’s about contribution.

Davy Jones’ Dead Man’s Ball 2025
A Fright Night to Remember The Alchemist

was nothing short of spectacular. Held at the beautifully eerie
British Engineerium, this year’s theme, Davy Jones’ Locker, was brought to
life with spine-tingling precision and creativity. From the moment guests arrived, they were plunged into an undersea nightmare that blended
elegance with terror in equal measure. The entrance set the tone: ghostly sea captains and spooked sailors
lurked in the shadows, while terrifying characters leapt from the darkness to shrieks of delight (and genuine fear).
The transformation of the Engineerium itself was astonishing. Mist rolled
through the arches, eerie blue lighting shimmered across the ironwork, and
the haunting cries of unseen creatures
echoed through the space. Every corner revealed another detail: dripping chains, flickering lanterns and wreckage from
long-forgotten ships. It was immersive, unsettling and utterly brilliant.
Once inside, guests were treated to
a parade of extraordinary costumes. The creativity on display was off the
charts – pirates, admirals, sirens and
shipwrecked souls filled the room, each more elaborate than the last. Standout moments included a giant puffer fish,
a hapless lifeguard being “eaten” by a
shark, and of course, Keith Carr’s jawdropping turn as Davy Jones himself
– complete with tentacles, tattered coat and an uncanny presence that made even the bravest partygoers flinch. The entertainment was equally
impressive. Dancers moved like
possessed spirits through the fog, their
52 www.sussexbusinessgroup.co.uk
chilling choreography both beautiful and unnerving. The screams of the
mermaids as they were plunged into their tanks will stay with guests for
a long time, a moment that perfectly captured the night’s blend of dark fantasy and theatre.
Beyond the scares and spectacle,
there was a real sense of community
and fun. Guests embraced the theme
wholeheartedly, laughing, gasping and dancing the night away beneath the
ghostly glow of the “deep sea.” It was a night that balanced performance,
creativity and pure escapism. In other
words, exactly what The Alchemist Ball has become known for.
By the time the lights came up, one thing was certain: the 2025 Ball raised the bar once again. A huge congratulations to everyone involved in turning the Engineerium into the stuff of nautical nightmares. If you weren’t there, you missed one hell of a voyage. The ball was created by the team at Alchemist Finance Solutions, along with a talented group of creative associates. The preparations for the 2027 ball are already underway! filled with spice —
the smell of garam masala, cinnamon,

But like many immigrant families, our

So Sunday dinners became a blend of

We didn’t know it then, but they were

We’ve kept the heart of the British Sunday roast — the comfort, the community — and added the soul of our heritage.
So when you try our Marathi Nalli Gosht, or our tandoori-style chicken roast,
you’re tasting the story of who we are — two friends, two cultures, one table. We didn’t just change the roast. We made it ours

Genuinely the best lamb shank I’ve eaten. And then there was the tandoori
