WELCOME TO THE LIED CENTER

FOR PERFORMING ARTS! WELCOME TO ANOTHER SPECTACULAR SEASON OF MUSIC, THEATER, DANCE, AND MORE AT THE LIED CENTER! There has never been a better time to enjoy life, escape from the world for a few hours, and experience the greatest artists in the world right here in Nebraska. The 2026–2027 season is one of the most entertaining in Lied Center history, filled with opportunities to laugh, celebrate, be inspired, and have the time of your life with family and friends. Headlining the season is the return of Hamilton, the most popular performing arts event in Lancaster County history. An extraordinary year also includes Yächtley Crëw, The Temptations, Mamma Mia!, SHUCKED, Riverdance, Trombone Shorty, and so much more. This season also gives us the opportunity to celebrate Wynton Marsalis, an iconic artist deeply connected with the Lied Center’s history. We are honored to welcome the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis during his final season as Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center and Music Director of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. His extraordinary influence on jazz, arts education, and American culture has spanned generations. Beyond the entertainment, this season features exceptional performances you might normally expect to travel to New York, Paris, or London to experience. Ballet Hispánico’s Carmen.maquia, Italy’s NoGravity, Japanese ensemble Kodo, and acclaimed pianists Isata Kanneh-Mason and Daniil Trifonov are just a few of the remarkable artists coming to Lincoln. It is also an exciting year for the Lied Center building itself. With the steel structure of the Building the Future project complete, we are looking ahead to the completion of this historic transformation in fall 2027. Please also consider joining the Friends of Lied. Your support helps bring extraordinary artists to Nebraska, creates life-changing opportunities for young people, and keeps the Lied Center strong for generations to come. It’s going to be an amazing year. Life is short. Gather your friends. Buy the tickets. Have the time of your life.

HIXSON-LIED

LEGACY Ernst F. Lied and Christina Hixson have transformed the lives of millions of Americans through the Lied Foundation Trust with philanthropic contributions of more than $300 million to over 125 di!erent organizations in seven states.

Born in 1906, Ernst F. Lied was a 1927 graduate of the University of Nebraska. He achieved business success as the owner of a Buick dealership in Omaha and as a real estate magnate in Las Vegas. Having no living relatives, he established a trust in 1972, and upon his death in 1980, his secretary and business partner Christina Hixson was appointed to administer the foundation.

“

The first gift from the Lied Foundation Trust was a $10 million matching grant to build the Lied Center for Performing Arts in the early 1980s at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in memory of Lied’s parents, Ernst M. and Ida K. Lied. The Lied Foundation Trust went on to support many projects in Nebraska, including Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo Lied Jungle, the Lied Lodge in Nebraska City, and the Lied Transplant Center at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

T HE LIED CENTER’S MOST IMPORTANT ROLE IS TO INTRODUCE INDIVIDUALS FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE AND CULTURAL BACKGROUNDS TO ENRICHING AND DIVERSE PERFORMING ARTS EXPERIENCES. - Christina Hixson Christina Hixson first partnered with Lied in 1944 as his secretary at the Omaha Buick dealership, and she followed him to Las Vegas as a business partner in 1960. After Lied’s death, Hixson became the executrix of his estate and continues to serve as the Lied Foundation’s sole trustee. It was Hixson who made the decision to support the construction of the Lied Center for Performing Arts. In 2000, she also announced a gift of $18 million to support UNL’s Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts. One of the last major gifts of the Lied Foundation Trust was a $2.5 million grant for the construction of the Lied Center’s new multipurpose space, the Lied Commons, which opened in 2012. Together, Lied and Hixson built a multimillion-dollar empire that has positively impacted the lives of millions of people in Nebraska and across the nation.

LOOKING AHEAD TO THE

LIED’S FUTURE T

he value of higher education extends beyond the degrees students receive and the research that changes lives. The University of Nebraska is an economic engine for our state, driving growth and success—and it is also a cultural engine for Nebraska. The arts enrich our quality of life. They create connections and help us think more broadly about the human experience.

Now, we look ahead to an exciting chapter. The Lied’s $35 million renovation and expansion will create more welcoming and versatile spaces for artists, students and audiences. I am grateful to the donors whose generosity has made this transformation possible. Together, we are building a bigger and better tomorrow for the fine and performing arts across Nebraska.

The Lied Center is truly central to this work. Through performances, education and statewide engagement, the Lied brings opportunities to Nebraskans of all ages, wherever they live.

All roads lead to Lincoln – and fortunately for us, those roads are traveled by some of the most talented and impressive performers of our time! Congratulations to the Lied Center for creating a spectacular season that is sure to entertain, thrill, and inspire audiences of all ages. LEIRION GAYLOR BAIRD MAYOR OF LINCOLN

“

Here in Lincoln, it can feel easy to take for granted the many popular musicals, intricate ballets, captivating plays, and other incredible performances we are able to witness each year at the Lied Center for Performing Arts. After all, the Lied has been here for 36 years, serving as a hub for high-quality programming and world-class performances since it opened in 1990. But as my family and I return to the Lied year after year, whether it’s for time-honored holiday traditions like Mannheim Steamroller or exciting, family-friendly Broadway hits like Disney’s Frozen, I’m reminded of how important it is to recognize how fortunate we are to have a place like this right here at home. That’s why Union Bank is proud to support the Lied Center’s mission of educating, inspiring, and entertaining the people of Nebraska through the performing arts. If you are so inclined and have the means, I encourage you to join us in supporting the Lied Center to help ensure our community will be able to enjoy moments like these and create lasting memories for years to come. JASON MUHLEISEN, PRESIDENT AND CEO, UNION BANK AND TRUST

“

The Lied Center plays a special role in Lincoln by bringing people together to share experiences that move us, challenge us, and often remind us of what matters most. For the older adults served in Immanuel’s Lincoln communities, access to music, theater, dance, and other performances can spark memories, encourage connection, and nourish the spirit. Those benefits aren't limited by age. The arts enrich the lives of people across our community, and we're proud to support the Lied Center and all it brings to Lincoln. TERI VOSICKY, REGIONAL RETIREMENT LIVING CONSULTANT, IMMANUEL COMMUNITIES

It’s my honor and pleasure to serve at the President of the Friends of Lied Board of Directors this year. When the Lied Center for Performing Arts opened back in 1990, thoughtful people decided to form Friends of Lied at the same time as a way of raising funds to sustain the longevity of this impressive hub for culture and the arts. Today, the Friends of Lied has more than 1,200 members from across the state, and this year, there are 59 members of the Board of Directors. The Board promotes membership and hosts fundraising events so we can provide funds to the Lied Center. Last spring, we donated $675,000! This is a particularly exciting year for the Lied. In addition to the wonderful lineup of performances, we’ll get to witness beautiful and important updates to the building, thanks to the Building the Future campaign. Even if you are like me and didn’t get introduced to live theatre until later in life, you know how inspiring it can be. Live theatre brings people together, opens minds, and enhances humanity. Become a Friends of Lied member today to help the Lied Center for Performing Arts continue to bring high-caliber live shows to our community and state-wide. CLOVER FREDERICK, PRESIDENT, FRIENDS OF LIED

The Lied Center for Performing Arts is an important partner to the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts, providing our students, faculty and sta! opportunities to experience world-class artists on stage and in the classroom. These experiences allow our students to see what it takes to perform and create at the highest level while inspiring new ways of thinking about their own artistic practice. The Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts is committed to fostering greater collaboration and interdisciplinarity across the arts. The Lied Center plays an important role in that vision, bringing together artists and audiences from diverse disciplines and creating opportunities for our students to encounter new perspectives, ideas and creative approaches. These connections help prepare our students for a world in which the boundaries between music, theatre, dance, visual art, design and emerging media arts continue to evolve. Our deepest gratitude to Miss Christina Hixson and the Lied Foundation Trust for their vision in creating this remarkable facility and for their enduring support of the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts. Enjoy the performances at the Lied Center this season. We also invite you to visit arts.unl.edu to learn more about our student and faculty performances, exhibitions and other creative work. THE TAVLINS BELIEVE THAT ARTS EDUCATION IS A CRITICAL PART OF STUDENT DEVELOPMENT BECAUSE IT HELPS SHAPE WELL-ROUNDED, ADAPTABLE AND THOUGHTFUL INDIVIDUALS EQUIPPED TO THRIVE BOTH IN SCHOOL AND IN LIFE.

MATT & CLOVER FREDERICK

Matt and Clover Frederick are pleased to be Season Lieders supporting the 202627 season of performing arts at the Lied Center! We love Broadway and have been fortunate to take our kids to see shows in Chicago, NYC and London. But we're even more grateful that we can see Broadwaycaliber theatre in our own community. IT IS OUR PLEASURE TO PLAY A ROLE IN BRINGING WORLD-CLASS PERFORMANCES TO LINCOLN.

BILL BUNTAIN

Returning to Lincoln after leaving in 1985 to launch a career in the music business, Bill is excited to support the Lied Center and its 2026-2027 Season. A graduate of Lincoln High and UNL, he spent the past 36 years on the road managing finance and logistics for live concert tours for a range of rock and pop artists. His first tour was with the B-52s Cosmic Tour in 1990, and over the years he’s worked with Ozzy Osbourne, Janet Jackson, CHER, P!NK, and Tina Turner. Growing up in Lincoln, we didn’t have a dedicated performing arts center, so I saw touring Broadway shows at the Stuart Theater and Pershing Auditorium. We often had to travel to Omaha or Kansas City to see the most current productions. My family also produced the summer musicals at Pinewood Bowl in the late 1970s, and I probably caught the entertainment bug during those summers. Since moving back to Lincoln part-time in 2022, Bill has regularly attended performances at the Lied Center and continues to be amazed by both the quality and quantity of the programming. Whether you’re seeing a play for the first time, or revisiting one of your favorites, seeing a show at the Lied is a reminder of how good it feels to experience something live—and together. I am especially excited to be able to support the Adam Pascal & Anthony Rapp performance this season. I first saw RENT on Broadway in June 1996. Being able to see the original cast in the first few months of RENT’s record-breaking run was like watching fireworks go o!. There was so much raw talent on stage. My path crossed with Anthony Rapp in summer 1998 while I was on tour in London when he was one of the four original cast members who were part of the opening RENT cast in the West End. We have stayed in touch over the years and it will be great to have him back in Lincoln.

LARRY & LUCY BUNTAIN COMINE

Larry and Lucy are proud to return as Lied Center Season Lieders for the 2026–2027 season! They have been Lied supporters and leaders for many years, including as Season Lieders for the past several seasons. Lucy serves as the Lied Center’s Senior Development Director Emerita. She has made a major impact in building the Lied Center’s artistic programs, including the Glenn Kor! Broadway Series and the Lied’s Command Performance of American Ballet Theatre with Misty Copeland and the St. Louis Symphony. During her time with the University of Nebraska Foundation, Lucy played a lead role in developing the arts at UNL, including the creation of the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts, Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film, Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center, Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts and much more. She has a passion for Broadway, dance, and a wide variety of art forms. LARRY AND LUCY ENJOY SUPPORTING AND ADVOCATING FOR NEBRASKA’S PERFORMING ARTS CENTER, AND THEIR POSITIVE IMPACT ON THE LIED WILL LAST LONG INTO THE FUTURE.

RYAN GROSS & BETH BARGER

The Lied Center for Performing Arts has always held a special place in Ryan and Beth's hearts and lives. They are honored to be Season Lieders and support the Lied Center for Performing Arts and all the artists, creators and storytellers who perform there. The arts have always been an important part of their lives and a gateway to expanding their understanding of the world and the amazing artists who create in it each day. As a child Ryan would listen to his grandfather play the dulcimer by ear without any formal music training. He would play for those in his community including those in retirement homes, community and cultural events and for his family. He loved bringing people together through music. Beth has been involved in music and the arts her entire life. She was a member of multiple bands in school, and her children have all followed by learning to play musical instruments and all enjoy visual arts and theater. Her eldest daughter is currently enrolled in the Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts. THE LIED CENTER FOR PERFORMING ARTS BRINGS WORLD-CLASS, CULTURALLY DIVERSE ARTS TO OUR COMMUNITY. THEY ARE PROUD TO SUPPORT IT AND HOPE ALL THAT ATTEND THESE SHOWS ARE INSPIRED BY THESE GREAT ARTISTS AND PERFORMERS.

CHUCK & KAREN HARRIS

We are pleased to participate in the Lied as Season Lieders for the 2026-2027 season. Both lifelong Nebraskans, Karen grew up in Lincoln and graduated from UNL and Chuck grew up in York and is a University of Minnesota graduate. We have been honored to participate in various Lied organizations, including as members of the Lied Center's 25th Anniversary Sterling Society. Karen served on the Friends of Lied board and served as its president in 2008-2009 and is currently on the board of the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts. Chuck served on the Statewide Advisory Board and as its president in 2015-2016. We have enjoyed attending and encouraging friends to enjoy the Lied experience. The Lied's commitment to making the performing arts experiences available to all through programs like Arts Across Nebraska and subsidized ticket prices makes the Lied Center the go-to destination for performing arts in Nebraska. WE WANT ALL NEBRASKANS TO HAVE THE AMAZING OPPORTUNITY TO ENJOY ALL THAT THE LIED CENTER MAKES POSSIBLE.

DOUG & VIKKI KOTIL

The Kotils are longtime friends and supporters of the Lied Center. In 1985, Vikki first became involved as a member of the then, newly formed, Statewide Program Advisory Council for the Lied Center for Performing Arts. She later joined the sta! of the Lied Center Project, under the direction of Shelia Gri"n, during the facility's construction and initial program development. Vikki recalls this as such a very exciting time to personally witness the brick and mortar being transformed into the world-class performing arts facility that it is today. She adds that from the onset the mission of the Lied Center was to increase opportunities for all Nebraskans to experience the highest quality performances and its events. Doug added that he and Vikki are happy to continue their support as an advocate and Season Lieder because they feel truly fortunate to benefit from the e!orts of those visionaries who made the Lied Center a reality. Today, the Lied Center is one of the top 100 theaters in the world. As we attend this season’s performances, IT IS A PRIORITY FOR US TO SUPPORT THE PROGRAMS AND EVENTS AS IT REMAINS EVIDENT THAT THE LIED CENTER CONTINUES TO ENHANCE AND ENRICH THE CULTURAL EXPERIENCES OF GENERATIONS OF NEBRASKANS.

ART & CHRIS ZYGIELBAUM

Taking great honor and pleasure in their involvement with the Lied Center, Art and Chris Zygielbaum support programs, take part in special events, and contribute time and energy to the Lied. Art is the past president of the Lied Center Statewide Advisory Board, and Chris is a former Friends of Lied board member. Art and Chris can be found at the Lied Center for more than 20 performances a year and often choose to support programs that have exceptional artistic merit and social justice impact. These include the play 1984 In the 2019-2020 season, the Mosaic Circle’s Everytime I Talk About and the incredible ABT Across America in the 2020-2021 Season. A number of years ago, they supported a youth play from Australia called Hitler’s Daughter that explored issues of Nazi Germany through a fictional plot. This production, in particular, had a significant impact on local youth who were given the opportunity to experience the show. The Zygielbaums also sponsored My Antonia, Trevor Noah, The Capitol Steps and many other memorable and meaningful programs in past seasons. BECAUSE OF THEIR DEEP BELIEF IN THE IMPORTANCE OF THE LIED CENTER TO OUR COMMUNITY AND STATE, THE ZYGIELBAUMS ARE COMMITTED TO HELPING ASSURE ITS CONTINUED SUCCESS.

What do you do with a chance? In the 1980’s Lincoln leaders were discussing the need for a new performance center. An opportunity arose and the leaders moved quickly. Woody Varner, president of the University of Nebraska Foundation and Sheila Gri"n, Lied Project Director, led the statewide fundraising campaign. The Lied Foundation Trust provided the generous lead gift. This launched a successful campaign of public and private donations. The groundbreaking was January 6, 1986, where the center was dedicated as the Lied Center for Performing Arts in memory of Ernst and Ida Lied. In 1989 it was my honor to serve as the first director of the Friends of Lied. Amazing volunteers from across Nebraska worked together to promote and fundraise for the new Lied Center for Performing Arts. Everyone was so excited to receive the 1990 program announcement of the first season and to visit the stunning interior. Over 10,000 attended the open house. Think of the thousands entertained, educated, and inspired in this beautiful hall the past 36 seasons. As in the beginning, it takes all of us… ticket holders, individual donors, corporate sponsors, and our public institutions to keep the dream alive for future generations. I remember learning that ticket sales cover only about 50% of a performance center’s budget. Our Friends of Lied and the Lied sta! work diligently to promote the fundraising e!ort for the added 50%. On behalf of the Advisory Board for the Lied Center for Performing Arts, I thank you for your generosity and dedication for so many years. If you have not had the chance to become a Friend of Lied, please review the opportunities in your program and join us. In the early 1980’s Lincoln leaders had a chance to fulfill a community dream. What do you do with a chance? You take it. It just may lead to something incredible. See you at the Lied! BARBARA BARTLE, PRESIDENT OF THE STATEWIDE ADVISORY BOARD

ABOUT

Yachtley Crew are a seven-piece SoCal band who burst onto the club scene in 2017, selling -out countless local venues before starting a nationwide Yacht Rock craze and being noticed by the legendary Jimmy Buffett, who signed them to his own Mailboat label prior to their deal with Earache/Universal Records. The nautical-suited and captain’s-hat-clad Yachtley Crew (also known as “The Titans of Soft Rock”), include drummer Rob Jones (Sailor Hawkins), bassist Chaz Ruiz (Baba Buoy), guitarist Thomas Gardner Jr. (Tommy Buoy), backing vocalist Curt Clendenin (Stoney Shores), saxophone/flutist Paul Pate (Pauly Shores), keyboardist Matt Grossman (Matthew McDonald) and NEW lead vocalist Ian Ward (Captain Ian). Ward joins The Titans Of Soft Rock with an impressive and wide-ranging resume that spans theatre, television and international performance. He has appeared on Broadway and starred in productions including Rock Of Ages, RENT, American Idiot, Footloose, and the iconic Jesus Christ Superstar at The Hollywood Bowl alongside Cynthia Erivo and Adam Lambert. Ward is bringing lead man vocals and commanding stage presence to venues around the world. He is also a Golden Ticket Winner and contestant on American Idol, and has collaborated and performed with Sir Tim Rice, Idina Menzel, Pat Benatar, and Cyndi Lauper. For the uninitiated, Yacht Rock encapsulates the revival of soft rock and Top 40 hits from the late ’70s to the early ‘80s — and it has become an undisputed nationwide phenomenon, inspiring fans to dress the part and sing along. The band’s first EP Seas The Day was released in 2023 and featured fan favorites such as Boz Scaggs’ “Lido Shuffle,” Ace’s “How Long,” Robbie Dupree’s “Steal Away,” the Bee Gees’ “How Deep Is Your Love,” Christopher Cross’ “Ride Like the Wind” and the band’s first original song “Sex On The Beach,” which was accompanied by a video with a guest appearance by Access Hollywood and iHeart Radio host, Mario Lopez. The video was directed by Myles Erfurth (Dead Sara, Ice Nine Kills, Twiztid).

Yachtley Crew closed 2024 with their first holiday EP Seas and Greetings on Earache Records, which featured the single “It’s Christmastime” that went Top 40 on the Billboard AC charts and Top 30 on the Billboard holiday charts, ending a sold-out year of touring and recording. In 2025 the band released their album, Seas The Night, which featured their single “Pain Of Losing You,” an original song written for the band by the iconic and multi-award-winning songwriter Diane Warren. Warren has penned nine #1 and thirty-three top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 and is tied for having written the most #1 songs as a sole writer in Billboard history. She was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2001 and received the prestigious Johnny Mercer Award from the organization in June 2024. Warren has received 16 Academy Award nominations, is a GRAMMY winner with 15 nominations, an EMMY winner, and is a two-time Golden Globe winner whose songs have been featured in more than 150 films. She is an Honorary Oscar recipient. “Pain Of Losing You” was Top 15 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary Charts and produced by Chris Lord-Alge (Stevie Nicks, Steven Tyler, Keith Urban, Bruce Springsteen, Green Day) and mastered by Ted Jensen (Eagles, Norah Jones, Evanescence, Alice in Chains, James Taylor) at Lord-Alge’s studios in Los Angeles. The videos for both “Pain Of Losing You,” and “Lowdown,” were both accompanied by a video directed by Myles Erfurth (Dead Sara, Ice Nine Kills, Twiztid). Yachtley Crew have appeared on HBO’s Yacht Rock: A Dockumentary, Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live, helped ring in the New Year on KLAS and KTLA’s “Las Vegas Countdown to 2023” (the exclusive, Emmy-winning special syndicated program that reached more than 16.5 million U.S. TV households), performed on countless morning television and radio shows throughout the country, been featured on Fox News nationally, and performed on SiriusXM’s Yacht Rock Radio “Yacht Rock 311” show as the first ever Yacht Rock band to perform live at the satellite radio studio. The band held a four-year residency at The Palms in Las Vegas and performed at a multitude of charity and special events throughout the years including the Mario Lopez Golf Classic Tournament in support of the Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center. The group is managed by longtime industry icon Andy Gould (Rob Zombie, Pantera, Lionel Richie, Guns N’ Roses) and are represented by Jim Lenz at TKO. Yachtley Crew are proud to fly the flag of Yacht Rock for each and every generation that loves good fun and good-time music, and they very much look forward to sharing new and classic Yacht Rock tunes and are set to help one and all navigate the as-yet-uncharted waters of 2026, and beyond.

PROGRAM NOTES Program Notes by Laney Boyd

QUEJAS, O LA MAJA Y EL RUISEÑOR, NO. 4 FROM GOYESCAS, OP. 11 ENRIQUE GRANADOS (1867-1916) Enrique Granados’s six-part piano suite Goyescas draws its title from the great Spanish painter and printmaker Francisco Goya, one of the most influential figures in Western art. Active throughout the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, Goya is often described as the last of the Old Masters and first of the moderns. His paintings frequently depicted majos and majas – idealized, romanticized members of Spain’s lower classes, often portrayed wearing exaggerated versions of traditional dress. The movements of Granados’s Goyescas, which is subtitled Los majos enamorados (“Majos in Love”), do not correspond to specific Goya paintings; instead, they capture the atmosphere and character of Goya’s art through the story of two young lovers. The cycle is considered Granados’s crowning achievement and remains a cornerstone of the Romantic piano repertoire, demanding considerable nuance, expressiveness, and power from its performers. The suite’s fourth piece, Quejas, o la Maja y el Ruiseñor (“Lament, or the Maiden and the Nightingale”) is the best known of the suite’s movements and is frequently performed as a standalone concert piece. Lasting roughly six minutes, it combines a richly expressive melody with elaborate ornamentation and singing inner voices. The piece marks a turning point in the lovers’ story: despair enters the narrative, giving way to the maiden’s lament, which is answered by the trilling song of a nightingale. Some listeners may find the melody familiar – and with good reason: Mexican songwriter Consuelo Velázquez reportedly used it as the basis for her famous 1940 song Bésame Mucho. PIANO SONATA IN B MINOR, S. 178 FRANZ LISZT (1811-1886) “Anyone who has heard it and finds it beautiful is beyond help.” So quipped esteemed Austrian music critic Eduard Hanslick in reference to Franz Liszt’s only sonata, the Piano Sonata in B minor. Though today the work is regarded as the pinnacle of both Liszt’s career and the Romantic piano repertoire, it was deeply polarizing among 19th-century music circles upon its publication in 1854. The sonata’s inherent innovation drew enthusiasm from proponents of the progressive, dramatic “music of the future” such as Richard Wagner, while traditionalists like Hanslick lambasted it for its intense emotionalism and perceived lack of formal restraint. With the benefit of over 150 intervening years, modern listeners largely celebrate Liszt’s boundary-pushing approach to composition.

PIANO SONATA IN B MINOR, S. 178 (CONT.) FRANZ LISZT (1811-1886) The B minor Sonata emerged following a period of change in the composer’s life. For much of his thirties, Liszt had toured extensively as a traveling virtuoso. He was, for lack of a better term, the Romantic era equivalent of a rock star, inspiring a level of fan frenzy so intense it was dubbed “Lisztomania.” By the time he composed his sonata, however, Liszt had largely abandoned the concert stage in favor of composition. He settled in Weimar in 1848 as court conductor to the Grand Duke, and there he devoted himself primarily to writing, giving only sporadic public performances. Lasting approximately thirty minutes, the sonata is intensely demanding both technically and interpretively. Its extraordinary complexity has prompted extensive scholarly study and debate, particularly concerning the possibility of a hidden programmatic meaning. Proposed interpretations have ranged from the Faust legend and autobiographical readings to allegories of the Garden of Eden and other biblical narratives. Whether or not Liszt intended any such program remains uncertain, but the work’s intensely dramatic character continues to invite speculation. The sonata’s formal design is equally elusive. Though presented as a single movement, di!erent analysts have proposed various ways of organizing the music: some identify three broad sections within the larger movement, while others hear four, though where these loosely defined subdivisions begin and end remains ambiguous. Throughout, themes are treated cyclically, appearing, developing, fragmenting, combining, and returning in new guises. Perhaps most striking of all is the work’s unexpected conclusion. Liszt’s manuscripts indicate that he originally intended to end with a final, dazzling display of virtuosic brilliance. Instead, he opted for a quiet, enigmatic close – a remarkable choice for a composer known for pushing the piano to its limits, and one that leaves listeners to ruminate over the sonata’s mysteries. ESTAMPES, L. 100 CLAUDE DEBUSSY (1862-1918) Claude Debussy brought pianistic color to a level previously unexplored, eschewing the rules of traditional harmony and counterpoint entirely in pursuit of vivid new sonorities. His Estampes (“prints” or “engravings”), composed in 1903 and premiered the following year, brilliantly exemplifies his ability to create these shimmering sensory atmospheres through shifting timbres and textures. This three-movement work for solo piano is often described as impressionistic, a term borrowed from the visual arts that emphasizes mood, atmosphere and subtle changes in color rather than clearly defined musical forms, though Debussy himself rejected the label. Each movement of Estampes is a self-contained sonic landscape, transporting listeners to colorful, far-flung locales. The opening “Pagodes” (Pagodas) evokes the many-tiered temples of the Far East, as well as the Javanese gamelan music Debussy first encountered at the 1889 Paris World’s Exposition. Pentatonic melodies, layered textures, and ascending melodic lines suggest the graceful architecture of pagodas, while the performance indication Presque sans nuance (“nearly without nuance”) calls for an atmosphere of serene, almost static tranquility.

ESTAMPES, L. 100 (CONT.) CLAUDE DEBUSSY (1862-1918) “La soirée dans Grenade” (An Evening in Granada) travels westward to Spain, conjuring the sultry sounds and distinctive style of Spanish folk music. Rhythmic patterns and textures imitate the strumming of a guitar before gradually fading into a hazy nighttime landscape. Though Debussy had only spent a handful of hours in Spain at the time of composition, renowned Spanish composer Manuel de Falla praised the movement, claiming, “…the entire composition in its most minute details conveys admirably what Spain is.” The final movement, “Jardins sous la pluie” (Gardens in the Rain), returns to Debussy’s native France, depicting a garden caught in a sudden rainstorm. Rapid sixteenth notes suggest falling raindrops, while shifting textures and harmonies evoke gusts of wind and rolling thunder. Quotes from two French folk melodies – Dodo, l’enfant do (“Sleep, the child will sleep”) and Nous n’irons plus au bois (“We won’t go to the woods again”) – add a childlike character to the scene. The movement concludes with a playful burst of pianism, bringing Estampes to a luminous close. THREE MOVEMENTS FROM PETRUSHKA IGOR STRAVINSKY (1882-1971) Igor Stravinsky became an overnight celebrity at age 27 following the 1910 premiere of his ballet The Firebird. Serge Diaghilev, founder of premiering company the Ballet Russes, seized upon the production’s success and immediately commissioned a second ballet from the young composer. The resulting work was Petrushka, which takes place in St. Petersburg during the preLenten carnival known as the Shrovetide fair and centers on three puppets who are magically brought to life: Petrushka, the pathetic clown archetype drawn from the Italian commedia dell’arte tradition (also known by the names Punch or Pulcinella); the Ballerina, whom Petrushka loves; and the Moor, Petrushka’s rival for her a!ections. Petrushka premiered in Paris on June 13, 1911 to quite as much acclaim as The Firebird, further cementing Stravinsky’s newfound fame. Ten years after the ballet’s premiere, Stravinsky returned to the score to pen Trois Mouvements de Petrouchka (Three Movements from Petrushka) for solo piano. He dedicated the work to his friend, Polish-American pianist Arthur Rubinstein, and was intentional in emphasizing that the movements were not direct transcriptions of the ballet. Rather than imitating the sound of a full orchestra, Stravinsky sought to compose a genuinely pianistic work to allow pianists to access and perform his music while showcasing their virtuosity. Indeed, the work is notorious for its relentless technical demands: all three movements feature large, rapid leaps across multiple octaves, furiously quick scales, and highly complex rhythmic patterns. In the first movement, “Danse russe” (Russian Dance), the three puppets are brought to life and perform a lively, folk-like Russian Dance. The central movement, “Chez Pétrouchka” (Petrushka’s Room), consists of angular melodies and harsh, dissonant chords that portray Petrushka’s frustration over the Ballerina’s rejection and his rivalry with the Moor. Finally, “Le semaine grasse” (The Shrovetide Fair) unfolds as a sprawling sonic tapestry depicting the bustling crowd, competing street noises, drunken revelry, and festive atmosphere of the carnival before culminating in a sudden, jarring halt.

PIANO CIRCLE DR. MARK CLINTON I am honored to carry forward my parents’ legacy of supporting the Piano Circle. Having devoted my life to music and education, I understand the profound impact that early parental support and exposure to the arts can have on personal growth and success. The Lied Center’s commitment to presenting the world’s finest pianists enriches our community, and I am proud to play a role in sustaining this extraordinary tradition. RICHARD COLAROSSI & ELIZABETH HARRIS-COLAROSSI IN MEMORY OF MARYSUE HARRIS Our family is honored to support the Lied Center’s Piano Circle in memory of my mother and my children’s grandmother, MarySue Harris. MarySue was passionate about the arts and dedicated to ensuring access to quality musicians throughout Nebraska. My husband, Richard Colarossi, and I, along with our children, Dean and Ellison, have found great joy in continuing her legacy. Her love for the piano spanned nearly eight decades, and we hope our support helps keep that love alive in the hearts of Nebraskans. ANABETH H. COX* As the only member of the Piano Circle without a history on the piano, I must admit that my love of piano performance comes as a result of my sister, MarySue Harris. Her love of the piano, her 40+ years of teaching piano, and her joy in the performance on the piano, have sealed my commitment to perpetuating that love for the children, and the children at heart, in the beauty of the music written for the piano. I’m grateful to be a part of bringing that beauty to the Lincoln community. I can’t play the piano, but I can love it!

CHARLOTTE HEERMANN The Piano Series initially featured in the 2013–14 season of the Lied Center has enhanced the season program and promises to continue to do so in the 2026–27 season. Our community has had the special opportunity to experience piano performances of the highest quality presented by internationally acclaimed pianists. The response has been enthusiastic and has raised awareness and expectations of even more outstanding performances. As a performing pianist and teacher for many years, I am particularly excited by the opportunity for students to hear some of the best pianists and performances in the world. What an inspiration! I look forward to another outstanding season with exceptional pianists and performances o!ered by the Piano Series. CHRISTOPHER MARKS & JESSICA FREEMAN We have loved the piano and the repertoire written for it since we were each very young. The Piano Circle concerts at the Lied Center have brought stellar artists to Lincoln and have been an exciting addition to the arts landscape here. We are very happy to be able to support the continuation of this series. MRS. LARRY H. LUSK The Piano Circle once again brings world acclaimed artists to the Lied stage. We hear a wonderful variety of piano music played at the highest level of excellence by these musicians. These concerts are enriching and inspiring to all of us. We welcome these artists to our stage. IAN, MAGGIE, & DEREK MCLEAN We love the Lied and all it does. We have gone to many concerts and shows there and they have all been excellent. We especially have enjoyed the classical music concerts. It is a real privilege to listen to world famous artists playing here in Lincoln. We wanted to continue this tradition by contributing to the Lied Piano Circle and all its great work. ROB MCMASTER & MAUREEN OSE Experiencing fine piano artists live at the Lied Center brings us great joy. Joining the Piano Circle in supporting the presence of this talent is a privilege. Music sets the rhythm for both of our lives and we love to see that shared with others. LIANA SANDIN – PEARLE FRANCIS FINIGAN FOUNDATION As President of The Pearle Francis Finigan Foundation, I’m proud to continue supporting music, especially piano performance. Pearle’s mother was a pianist and a graduate of the Lincoln Conservatory, now the UNL School of Music. As a classically trained vocalist, I also deeply value the artistry of pianists and appreciate the opportunity to hear world-class musicians at the Lied Center. These performances are vital for the public and for music students, o!ering access to the highest level of musical excellence.

ABOUT The Temptations, often referred to as American music royalty, are world-renowned superstars of entertainment, revered for their phenomenal catalog of music and prolific career. They are one of the most iconic, bestselling brands in the entertainment world today. While the group has evolved over the years, Dr. Otis Williams has continued to lead the group and carry the torch forward for the next generation of Temptations’ fans. The Temptations are headlining concerts around the country throughout 2025. Their concerts include fan favorites such as “My Girl,” “Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me),” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone,” and more. Ranked #1 in Billboard magazine’s most recent list of the “Greatest R&B/Hip-Hop Artists of All Time,” The Temptations also appear in the magazine’s 125th Anniversary list of the “125 Greatest of All Time Artists.” In addition, Rolling Stone magazine named the group among the “100 Greatest Artists of All Time.” In September of 2020, the editors of Rolling Stone magazine commented that The Temptations are “Indisputably the greatest black vocal group of the Modern Era…,” and listed the group’s Anthology album among the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.” The Anthology album has appeared in all three of Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums’ lists. The Temptations have been the subject of a smash hit Broadway musical, Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations, based on Otis Williams’ personal journey, which opened on Broadway at the Imperial Theatre on March 21st, 2019. The musical received 12 Tony nominations, including Best Musical, and won the Tony Award® for Best Choreography at the 73rd Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on June 10, 2019. Now on tour, the Musical is scheduled to open in theaters in more than 50 cities across the U.S. during the next several years. Ain’t Too Proud opened in the UK, in the West End of London, at the Prince Edward Theatre on April 20, 2023. For details, see the link here: ainttooproudmusical.com/ The Temptations’ heritage, influence, and contributions to, not only American culture and African American communities but also to the global music landscape are monumental. The Temptations’ presence in the world today has never been more vivid, and their popularity is ever-increasing.

MORE THAN A PERFORMANCE:

YO-YO MA RETURNS

TO THE LIED When University of Nebraska–Lincoln freshman cello performance major Cordelia Grey learned she might have an opportunity to meet Yo-Yo Ma during his visit to the Lied Center, she kept her expectations modest. “I was so excited just to get to hear him play,” Grey recalled. What happened instead became an experience she will carry for the rest of her life. Grey and fellow students spent nearly 45 minutes with Ma before his Lied Center performance. Then came a surprise none of them expected: each student was invited to play Ma’s 1733 Montagnana cello, an instrument valued in the millions. “It was absolutely incredible,” Grey said. “We had no idea we were going to get to play it.”

Grey admitted she was nervous about meeting one of her musical heroes. Those nerves disappeared quickly when Ma expressed being just as excited to meet the students as they were to see him. Ma also o!ered advice Grey put to use almost immediately, notating suggestions and tips on the sheet music she was using in an upcoming recital while encouraging her to focus on enjoying the music and expressing what she was feeling. Grey applied his advice at her solo recital and later told audience members who complimented her performance, “Yeah, I got that advice from Yo-Yo Ma.” That spirit of connection continued during intermission. When Ma learned that a group of high school orchestra students were in the audience, he invited them backstage to learn about their musical experiences and connect with them about the program he was performing. For Lied Center audiences and supporters, these moments demonstrate the reach of artist outreach. Bringing the world’s greatest performers to Nebraska creates extraordinary nights in the concert hall, but the impact can extend far beyond the performance itself. Students gain access to artists they have studied and admired, receiving encouragement and inspiration at pivotal moments in their development. Cordelia Grey arrived hoping simply to see Yo-Yo Ma up close. She left with his advice, an unforgettable experience playing his cello and a new perspective on finding joy in making music.

BEYOND THE STAGE: SOWETO GOSPEL CHOIR BUILDS CONNECTIONS ACROSS LINCOLN A full week with the Soweto Gospel Choir brought music, movement and connection to spaces across Lincoln. The internationally celebrated ensemble’s return to the Lied Center included far more than a performance, with residency activities reaching young people, musicians and community members throughout the city. At the Malone Center, choir members introduced children to South African games, movement and dance, filling the room with jumping, clapping and laughter. At First-Plymouth Church, members of the ensemble worked with Abendmusik singers to learn a song together, bringing musicians from di!erent backgrounds into the same space through a shared love of singing. One of the week’s most meaningful encounters took place at the Lancaster County Youth Services Center. The visit created a powerful connection between the young people and choir members. Youth Services Center sta! shared the e!ects of these residencies can continue for days with participants becoming more positive and hopeful after the artists leave. The residency also reached the next generation of Nebraska musicians. Approximately 250 University of Nebraska–Lincoln music students gathered for a special convocation with the choir. Some learned a song directly from the artists and, that evening, joined Soweto Gospel Choir on the Lied Center stage to perform the finale together. Sharing South African heritage was central to the artists’ approach. Soweto Gospel Choir singer and choir administrator Bongani Ncube explained, “Singing is the same all over, but other people do it di!erently and they use their heritage.” He also hoped the experience would inspire young musicians to see where their own love of singing might take them. For Lied Center audiences and supporters, this is the impact artist outreach can create. A world-class performance may fill the Lied Center for one evening, but a residency carries that experience into community organizations, classrooms and the lives of young people who may never otherwise have this kind of access. Through these encounters, visiting artists become more than performers. They become teachers, collaborators and sources of inspiration, and the impact of their time in Nebraska can continue long after the final applause.
