WELCOME TO THE LIED CENTER

FOR PERFORMING ARTS! WELCOME TO ANOTHER SPECTACULAR SEASON OF MUSIC, THEATER, DANCE, AND MORE AT THE LIED CENTER! There has never been a better time to enjoy life, escape from the world for a few hours, and experience the greatest artists in the world right here in Nebraska. The 2026–2027 season is one of the most entertaining in Lied Center history, filled with opportunities to laugh, celebrate, be inspired, and have the time of your life with family and friends. Headlining the season is the return of Hamilton, the most popular performing arts event in Lancaster County history. An extraordinary year also includes Yächtley Crëw, The Temptations, Mamma Mia!, SHUCKED, Riverdance, Trombone Shorty, and so much more. This season also gives us the opportunity to celebrate Wynton Marsalis, an iconic artist deeply connected with the Lied Center’s history. We are honored to welcome the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis during his final season as Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center and Music Director of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. His extraordinary influence on jazz, arts education, and American culture has spanned generations. Beyond the entertainment, this season features exceptional performances you might normally expect to travel to New York, Paris, or London to experience. Ballet Hispánico’s Carmen.maquia, Italy’s NoGravity, Japanese ensemble Kodo, and acclaimed pianists Isata Kanneh-Mason and Daniil Trifonov are just a few of the remarkable artists coming to Lincoln. It is also an exciting year for the Lied Center building itself. With the steel structure of the Building the Future project complete, we are looking ahead to the completion of this historic transformation in fall 2027. Please also consider joining the Friends of Lied. Your support helps bring extraordinary artists to Nebraska, creates life-changing opportunities for young people, and keeps the Lied Center strong for generations to come. It’s going to be an amazing year. Life is short. Gather your friends. Buy the tickets. Have the time of your life.

HIXSON-LIED

LEGACY Ernst F. Lied and Christina Hixson have transformed the lives of millions of Americans through the Lied Foundation Trust with philanthropic contributions of more than $300 million to over 125 different organizations in seven states.

Born in 1906, Ernst F. Lied was a 1927 graduate of the University of Nebraska. He achieved business success as the owner of a Buick dealership in Omaha and as a real estate magnate in Las Vegas. Having no living relatives, he established a trust in 1972, and upon his death in 1980, his secretary and business partner Christina Hixson was appointed to administer the foundation.

“

The first gift from the Lied Foundation Trust was a $10 million matching grant to build the Lied Center for Performing Arts in the early 1980s at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in memory of Lied’s parents, Ernst M. and Ida K. Lied. The Lied Foundation Trust went on to support many projects in Nebraska, including Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo Lied Jungle, the Lied Lodge in Nebraska City, and the Lied Transplant Center at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

T HE LIED CENTER’S MOST IMPORTANT ROLE IS TO INTRODUCE INDIVIDUALS FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE AND CULTURAL BACKGROUNDS TO ENRICHING AND DIVERSE PERFORMING ARTS EXPERIENCES. - Christina Hixson Christina Hixson first partnered with Lied in 1944 as his secretary at the Omaha Buick dealership, and she followed him to Las Vegas as a business partner in 1960. After Lied’s death, Hixson became the executrix of his estate and continues to serve as the Lied Foundation’s sole trustee. It was Hixson who made the decision to support the construction of the Lied Center for Performing Arts. In 2000, she also announced a gift of $18 million to support UNL’s Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts. One of the last major gifts of the Lied Foundation Trust was a $2.5 million grant for the construction of the Lied Center’s new multipurpose space, the Lied Commons, which opened in 2012. Together, Lied and Hixson built a multimillion-dollar empire that has positively impacted the lives of millions of people in Nebraska and across the nation.

All roads lead to Lincoln – and fortunately for us, those roads are traveled by some of the most talented and impressive performers of our time! Congratulations to the Lied Center for creating a spectacular season that is sure to entertain, thrill, and inspire audiences of all ages. LEIRION GAYLOR BAIRD MAYOR OF LINCOLN

“

Here in Lincoln, it can feel easy to take for granted the many popular musicals, intricate ballets, captivating plays, and other incredible performances we are able to witness each year at the Lied Center for Performing Arts. After all, the Lied has been here for 36 years, serving as a hub for high-quality programming and world-class performances since it opened in 1990. But as my family and I return to the Lied year after year, whether it’s for time-honored holiday traditions like Mannheim Steamroller or exciting, family-friendly Broadway hits like Disney’s Frozen, I’m reminded of how important it is to recognize how fortunate we are to have a place like this right here at home. That’s why Union Bank is proud to support the Lied Center’s mission of educating, inspiring, and entertaining the people of Nebraska through the performing arts. If you are so inclined and have the means, I encourage you to join us in supporting the Lied Center to help ensure our community will be able to enjoy moments like these and create lasting memories for years to come. JASON MUHLEISEN, PRESIDENT AND CEO, UNION BANK AND TRUST

“

The Lied Center plays a special role in Lincoln by bringing people together to share experiences that move us, challenge us, and often remind us of what matters most. For the older adults served in Immanuel’s Lincoln communities, access to music, theater, dance, and other performances can spark memories, encourage connection, and nourish the spirit. Those benefits aren't limited by age. The arts enrich the lives of people across our community, and we're proud to support the Lied Center and all it brings to Lincoln. TERI VOSICKY, REGIONAL RETIREMENT LIVING CONSULTANT, IMMANUEL COMMUNITIES

“

It’s my honor and pleasure to serve at the President of the Friends of Lied Board of Directors this year. When the Lied Center for Performing Arts opened back in 1990, thoughtful people decided to form Friends of Lied at the same time as a way of raising funds to sustain the longevity of this impressive hub for culture and the arts. Today, the Friends of Lied has more than 1,200 members from across the state, and this year, there are 59 members of the Board of Directors. The Board promotes membership and hosts fundraising events so we can provide funds to the Lied Center. Last spring, we donated $675,000! This is a particularly exciting year for the Lied. In addition to the wonderful lineup of performances, we’ll get to witness beautiful and important updates to the building, thanks to the Building the Future campaign. Even if you are like me and didn’t get introduced to live theatre until later in life, you know how inspiring it can be. Live theatre brings people together, opens minds, and enhances humanity. Become a Friends of Lied member today to help the Lied Center for Performing Arts continue to bring high-caliber live shows to our community and state-wide. CLOVER FREDERICK, PRESIDENT, FRIENDS OF LIED

The Lied Center for Performing Arts is an important partner to the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts, providing our students, faculty and staff opportunities to experience world-class artists on stage and in the classroom. These experiences allow our students to see what it takes to perform and create at the highest level while inspiring new ways of thinking about their own artistic practice. The Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts is committed to fostering greater collaboration and interdisciplinarity across the arts. The Lied Center plays an important role in that vision, bringing together artists and audiences from diverse disciplines and creating opportunities for our students to encounter new perspectives, ideas and creative approaches. These connections help prepare our students for a world in which the boundaries between music, theatre, dance, visual art, design and emerging media arts continue to evolve. Our deepest gratitude to Miss Christina Hixson and the Lied Foundation Trust for their vision in creating this remarkable facility and for their enduring support of the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts. Enjoy the performances at the Lied Center this season. We also invite you to visit arts.unl.edu to learn more about our student and faculty performances, exhibitions and other creative work. Longtime Lincoln residents and community volunteers, Mike is the Managing Director of Pacific Asset Management, LLC, and Marvona is a Past National President of the Delta Zeta Sorority, a Past President of the Delta Zeta Foundation and was an early Friends of Lied board member. THE TAVLINS BELIEVE THAT ARTS EDUCATION IS A CRITICAL PART OF STUDENT DEVELOPMENT BECAUSE IT HELPS SHAPE WELL-ROUNDED, ADAPTABLE AND THOUGHTFUL INDIVIDUALS EQUIPPED TO THRIVE BOTH IN SCHOOL AND IN LIFE.

MATT & CLOVER FREDERICK

Matt and Clover Frederick are pleased to be Season Lieders supporting the 202627 season of performing arts at the Lied Center! We love Broadway and have been fortunate to take our kids to see shows in Chicago, NYC and London. But we're even more grateful that we can see Broadwaycaliber theatre in our own community. IT IS OUR PLEASURE TO PLAY A ROLE IN BRINGING WORLD-CLASS PERFORMANCES TO LINCOLN.

BILL BUNTAIN

Returning to Lincoln after leaving in 1985 to launch a career in the music business, Bill is excited to support the Lied Center and its 2026-2027 Season. A graduate of Lincoln High and UNL, he spent the past 36 years on the road managing finance and logistics for live concert tours for a range of rock and pop artists. His first tour was with the B-52s Cosmic Tour in 1990, and over the years he’s worked with Ozzy Osbourne, Janet Jackson, CHER, P!NK, and Tina Turner. Growing up in Lincoln, we didn’t have a dedicated performing arts center, so I saw touring Broadway shows at the Stuart Theater and Pershing Auditorium. We often had to travel to Omaha or Kansas City to see the most current productions. My family also produced the summer musicals at Pinewood Bowl in the late 1970s, and I probably caught the entertainment bug during those summers. Since moving back to Lincoln part-time in 2022, Bill has regularly attended performances at the Lied Center and continues to be amazed by both the quality and quantity of the programming. Whether you’re seeing a play for the first time, or revisiting one of your favorites, seeing a show at the Lied is a reminder of how good it feels to experience something live—and together. I am especially excited to be able to support the Adam Pascal & Anthony Rapp performance this season. I first saw RENT on Broadway in June 1996. Being able to see the original cast in the first few months of RENT’s record-breaking run was like watching fireworks go off. There was so much raw talent on stage. My path crossed with Anthony Rapp in summer 1998 while I was on tour in London when he was one of the four original cast members who were part of the opening RENT cast in the West End. We have stayed in touch over the years and it will be great to have him back in Lincoln.

LARRY & LUCY BUNTAIN COMINE

Larry and Lucy are proud to return as Lied Center Season Lieders for the 2026–2027 season! They have been Lied supporters and leaders for many years, including as Season Lieders for the past several seasons. Lucy serves as the Lied Center’s Senior Development Director Emerita. She has made a major impact in building the Lied Center’s artistic programs, including the Glenn Korff Broadway Series and the Lied’s Command Performance of American Ballet Theatre with Misty Copeland and the St. Louis Symphony. During her time with the University of Nebraska Foundation, Lucy played a lead role in developing the arts at UNL, including the creation of the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts, Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film, Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center, Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts and much more. She has a passion for Broadway, dance, and a wide variety of art forms. LARRY AND LUCY ENJOY SUPPORTING AND ADVOCATING FOR NEBRASKA’S PERFORMING ARTS CENTER, AND THEIR POSITIVE IMPACT ON THE LIED WILL LAST LONG INTO THE FUTURE.

RYAN GROSS & BETH BARGER

The Lied Center for Performing Arts has always held a special place in Ryan and Beth's hearts and lives. They are honored to be Season Lieders and support the Lied Center for Performing Arts and all the artists, creators and storytellers who perform there. The arts have always been an important part of their lives and a gateway to expanding their understanding of the world and the amazing artists who create in it each day. As a child Ryan would listen to his grandfather play the dulcimer by ear without any formal music training. He would play for those in his community including those in retirement homes, community and cultural events and for his family. He loved bringing people together through music. Beth has been involved in music and the arts her entire life. She was a member of multiple bands in school, and her children have all followed by learning to play musical instruments and all enjoy visual arts and theater. Her eldest daughter is currently enrolled in the Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts. THE LIED CENTER FOR PERFORMING ARTS BRINGS WORLD-CLASS, CULTURALLY DIVERSE ARTS TO OUR COMMUNITY. THEY ARE PROUD TO SUPPORT IT AND HOPE ALL THAT ATTEND THESE SHOWS ARE INSPIRED BY THESE GREAT ARTISTS AND PERFORMERS.

CHUCK & KAREN HARRIS

We are pleased to participate in the Lied as Season Lieders for the 2026-2027 season. Both lifelong Nebraskans, Karen grew up in Lincoln and graduated from UNL and Chuck grew up in York and is a University of Minnesota graduate. We have been honored to participate in various Lied organizations, including as members of the Lied Center's 25th Anniversary Sterling Society. Karen served on the Friends of Lied board and served as its president in 2008-2009 and is currently on the board of the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts. WE WANT ALL NEBRASKANS TO HAVE THE AMAZING OPPORTUNITY TO ENJOY ALL THAT THE LIED CENTER MAKES POSSIBLE.

DOUG & VIKKI KOTIL

The Kotils are longtime friends and supporters of the Lied Center. In 1985, Vikki first became involved as a member of the then, newly formed, Statewide Program Advisory Council for the Lied Center for Performing Arts. She later joined the staff of the Lied Center Project, under the direction of Shelia Griffin, during the facility's construction and initial program development. Vikki recalls this as such a very exciting time to personally witness the brick and mortar being transformed into the world-class performing arts facility that it is today. She adds that from the onset the mission of the Lied Center was to increase opportunities for all Nebraskans to experience the highest quality performances and its events. Doug added that he and Vikki are happy to continue their support as an advocate and Season Lieder because they feel truly fortunate to benefit from the efforts of those visionaries who made the Lied Center a reality. Today, the Lied Center is one of the top 100 theaters in the world. As we attend this season’s performances, IT IS A PRIORITY FOR US TO SUPPORT THE PROGRAMS AND EVENTS AS IT REMAINS EVIDENT THAT THE LIED CENTER CONTINUES TO ENHANCE AND ENRICH THE CULTURAL EXPERIENCES OF GENERATIONS OF NEBRASKANS.

What do you do with a chance? In the 1980’s Lincoln leaders were discussing the need for a new performance center. An opportunity arose and the leaders moved quickly. Woody Varner, president of the University of Nebraska Foundation and Sheila Griffin, Lied Project Director, led the statewide fundraising campaign. The Lied Foundation Trust provided the generous lead gift. This launched a successful campaign of public and private donations. The groundbreaking was January 6, 1986, where the center was dedicated as the Lied Center for Performing Arts in memory of Ernst and Ida Lied. In 1989 it was my honor to serve as the first director of the Friends of Lied. Amazing volunteers from across Nebraska worked together to promote and fundraise for the new Lied Center for Performing Arts. Everyone was so excited to receive the 1990 program announcement of the first season and to visit the stunning interior. Over 10,000 attended the open house. Think of the thousands entertained, educated, and inspired in this beautiful hall the past 36 seasons. As in the beginning, it takes all of us… ticket holders, individual donors, corporate sponsors, and our public institutions to keep the dream alive for future generations. I remember learning that ticket sales cover only about 50% of a performance center’s budget. Our Friends of Lied and the Lied staff work diligently to promote the fundraising effort for the added 50%. On behalf of the Advisory Board for the Lied Center for Performing Arts, I thank you for your generosity and dedication for so many years. If you have not had the chance to become a Friend of Lied, please review the opportunities in your program and join us. In the early 1980’s Lincoln leaders had a chance to fulfill a community dream. What do you do with a chance? You take it. It just may lead to something incredible. See you at the Lied! BARBARA BARTLE, PRESIDENT OF THE STATEWIDE ADVISORY BOARD

Kevin and Diane Klein have been married for 25 years, and RENT was one of the first shows they saw together. They knew immediately it would become one of their favorites. Since then, it has become the production they have seen most often, while the movie adaptation remains one of the most-watched films in their home. “Seeing Adam and Anthony together is an event we would never want to miss, and sponsoring this special moment just made sense to us.” For Kevin and Diane, RENT is more than a favorite—it is part of their story together.

“No day but today.” This iconic message from Rent defined a generation. As a proud Gen Xer, this show left an indelible mark on my youth. Sponsoring STARS of Rent is my way of celebrating that legacy at the Lied Center. Vibrant communities require a thriving arts scene, and the Lied Center brings that essential pulse to Nebraska. I support this stage to ensure the Lincoln community always has a space where groundbreaking art can inspire, challenge and unite us.

FEATURING

MARC MARTEL “In the history of music, few voices have been as great as that of Freddie Mercury. However, the Canadian singer Marc Martel seems to be his very reincarnation.” -Alejandra Orozco, Quarter Rock Press Long before his YouTube videos went viral, spawning an appearance on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and a performance with the surviving members of Queen on “American Idol,” Marc Martel spent 13 years recording and touring the globe with Canadian rockers Downhere. Not only did the rock band visit 49 American States, but also toured throughout Europe and even Northern Africa, collecting worldwide acclaim and four Juno Awards in their native land. All the while, the group was extoled for its sonic diversity while the Nashville transplant was regularly heralded as a world-class vocalist, often earning comparisons to late great Freddie Mercury in tandem with building his own fervent fan base. While the idea of paying tribute to one of the world’s most renowned and influential rock institutions never actually occurred to him when pounding the pavement with his own internationally signed act, in hindsight, it only made sense that Martel would someday be the perfect vehicle to propel One Vision Of Queen onto the road. “When I was in my former band Downhere, I did everything I could not to remind people of Freddie Mercury, but it became almost hilarious how many people compared me to him to the point where it felt like it was working against the band when we tested singles at radio.” After paying their dues for more than a decade in a fifteen passenger van and finally graduating to a full-fledged bus, the group wrote what they believed was the very peak of its artistry and expression, but despite the private support of radio programmers, the public never latched onto to what turned out to be Downhere’s swansong effort. Yet right around the time when that writing popped up on the wall, Martel received an email from an industry pal with a link to a contest spearheaded by the actual members of Queen. At first, the front man almost passed on the opportunity, but with some prodding from his wife and additional friends, he casually cut a version of “Somebody To Love” in 2011, and now 30 million cumulative YouTube and Facebook views later, bolstered by the aforementioned “Ellen” appearance, Martel was declared the victor. Even legendary Queen drummer Roger Taylor remarked to the Daily Record: “That voice. You listen, close your eyes and you think it’s Freddie. It’s really uncanny.”

Martel is the ideal match for One Vision Of Queen, an explosive, attention-commanding tribute where some of the most iconic rock anthems of all time collide with a theatrical performance style and eye-popping production. At its core, the riveting show focuses on the extremely diverse body of the band’s greatest hits, from the grandiose “Bohemian Rhapsody” to the adrenaline-pumping “We Will Rock You,” the euphoric “We Are The Champions,” the funky “Another One Bites The Dust,” the stadium-shaking David Bowie collaboration “Under Pressure,” the soulful “Somebody To Love” and the swinging “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” (to name but a few from the steroid-stacked set list). In addition to the obligatory but nonetheless consistently astounding selections, One Vision Of Queen also incorporates an entirely unique angle that will have die-hards and casual appreciators alike clamoring to hear several other sides of Martel. “Near the end of Freddie’s life, he explored other styles of music beyond rock, including opera, so with that in mind, the show also includes a segment of familiar songs in the flavor of what they might have sounded like had Freddie ever gotten the chance to sing them,” he explains. “For instance, I perform ‘Ave Maria’ by myself on piano and also the great opera aria ‘Nessun Dorma’ in the style of Freddie, so it gives the night some imaginative elements in the spirit of Queen, rather than strictly the letter of Queen. You could call it a greatest hits show with a twist where I get to explore other things that I wish Freddie could have recorded himself and wonder what could have been.” Melodic rock solo artist Jeff Scott Soto, who’s also logged time in Trans-Siberian Orchestra and Journey (the latter of which taught him a thing or two about channeling a superstar vocalist) even admitted “I wouldn’t want to have to try to sing these more obscure songs or one of these novelty songs after somebody like Marc Martel, who does them so well and does them like Freddie.” Rolling Stone went on to call the vocal resemblance “striking,” while Brian Koerber of Mashable proclaimed “regardless of Martel’s obvious comparisons to Mercury, he’s a talented musician and performer, not a gimmick.” “Living in the States, I’m finding that Americans in particular are kind of discovering Queen still, even though they’re the second biggest thing to The Beatles in the rest of the world,” notices Martel. “As a result, America isn’t satiated with Queen cover bands like they are in the UK and Europe, so gigs keep falling into my lap. I try to walk a line between being my own artist and indulging in this Queen thing, but it’s so much fun and people have been knocking down my door that it’s hard to say ‘no’ and it’s a standing ovation every night. It’s really just me answering the call of a huge desire for Queen’s music to be performed with Freddie’s sound.” But even with the overwhelming demand behind Martel’s Queen-themed projects, he’s cultivated an increasingly visible solo career defined by a relentless creativity, unpredictably and practically super human abilities to simultaneously craft his own identity while flawlessly stepping into the shoes of others. He’s made additional waves performing at the direct request of Céline Dion (who avidly follows his videos) on Radio-Canada TV’s “En direct de l’Universe” in 2016, plus a jaw-dropping cover of George Michael and Wham!’s “Last Christmas” for the video game “Just Dance 2017” (with Kenny Loggins’ “Footloose” coming next). Add in performances on People.com, ten nights at the Calgary Stampede, plus various San Francisco Giants, Phoenix Suns, Los Angeles Clippers and Charlotte Hornets games, and there’s truly no limit to Martel’s unreal reach. “I grew up believing a lie that I had to have one sound as a singer, but after I put that false belief aside, I realized I can have as many sides as I want,” sums up Martel. “I’m having the best time of my life as a professional musician right now where I’m involved with so many different things it’s impossible to get bored. Between anything Queen-related, my own recordings and these fun little side projects, I’m more diverse and happier as an artist than I’ve ever been!”

ABOUT MARC MARTEL Marc Martel is an internationally acclaimed vocalist whose remarkable resemblance to Freddie Mercury’s voice has captivated audiences around the world. Long before lending his voice to the Academy Awardwinning film Bohemian Rhapsody, selling out venues across more than 45 countries, and amassing hundreds of millions of online views, Martel spent 13 years recording and touring with the Canadian rock band Downhere. In 2011, a casually recorded cover of Queen’s “Somebody to Love” launched Martel into global recognition. The performance quickly went viral, leading to appearances on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, a performance with Queen on American Idol, and widespread acclaim from fans and critics alike. Queen drummer Roger Taylor famously remarked, “That voice. You listen, close your eyes and you think it’s Freddie. It’s really uncanny.” In 2012, Martel was hand-selected frontman of The Queen Extravaganza, the official Queen tribute production created by Brian May and Roger Taylor. He later became one of the featured vocalists for the 2018 blockbuster film Bohemian Rhapsody, contributing vocals alongside recordings of Freddie Mercury and performances by Rami Malek. Today, Martel headlines ONE VISION OF QUEEN, an electrifying concert experience celebrating the music of one of rock’s greatest bands. Featuring iconic hits such as “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “We Will Rock You,” “We Are the Champions,” “Another One Bites the Dust,” “Under Pressure,” “Somebody to Love,” and “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” the production combines world-class musicianship with stunning visuals and theatrical presentation. Beyond his Queen-related projects, Martel has built a successful solo career marked by extraordinary versatility. His performances have included appearances at the request of Céline Dion, a featured vocal performance for Just Dance 2017, and numerous major sporting events. He has performed for organizations including the Arizona Cardinals, Carolina Panthers, San Francisco 49ers, Las Vegas Golden Knights, San Francisco Giants, Phoenix Suns, Los Angeles Clippers, Charlotte Hornets, and Cleveland Cavaliers. Martel’s videos have generated more than 250 million views across YouTube and Facebook, making him one of the most recognized vocal performers in the world. Whether performing Queen classics or his own music, Marc Martel continues to amaze audiences with a voice that has been described as one of the closest ever heard to Freddie Mercury himself.

MORE THAN A PERFORMANCE:

YO-YO MA RETURNS

TO THE LIED When University of Nebraska–Lincoln freshman cello performance major Cordelia Grey learned she might have an opportunity to meet Yo-Yo Ma during his visit to the Lied Center, she kept her expectations modest. “I was so excited just to get to hear him play,” Grey recalled. What happened instead became an experience she will carry for the rest of her life. Grey and fellow students spent nearly 45 minutes with Ma before his Lied Center performance. Then came a surprise none of them expected: each student was invited to play Ma’s 1733 Montagnana cello, an instrument valued in the millions. “It was absolutely incredible,” Grey said. “We had no idea we were going to get to play it.”

Grey admitted she was nervous about meeting one of her musical heroes. Those nerves disappeared quickly when Ma expressed being just as excited to meet the students as they were to see him. Ma also offered advice Grey put to use almost immediately, notating suggestions and tips on the sheet music she was using in an upcoming recital while encouraging her to focus on enjoying the music and expressing what she was feeling. Grey applied his advice at her solo recital and later told audience members who complimented her performance, “Yeah, I got that advice from Yo-Yo Ma.” That spirit of connection continued during intermission. When Ma learned that a group of high school orchestra students were in the audience, he invited them backstage to learn about their musical experiences and connect with them about the program he was performing. For Lied Center audiences and supporters, these moments demonstrate the reach of artist outreach. Bringing the world’s greatest performers to Nebraska creates extraordinary nights in the concert hall, but the impact can extend far beyond the performance itself. Students gain access to artists they have studied and admired, receiving encouragement and inspiration at pivotal moments in their development. Cordelia Grey arrived hoping simply to see Yo-Yo Ma up close. She left with his advice, an unforgettable experience playing his cello and a new perspective on finding joy in making music.

BEYOND THE STAGE: SOWETO GOSPEL CHOIR BUILDS CONNECTIONS ACROSS LINCOLN A full week with the Soweto Gospel Choir brought music, movement and connection to spaces across Lincoln. The internationally celebrated ensemble’s return to the Lied Center included far more than a performance, with residency activities reaching young people, musicians and community members throughout the city. At the Malone Center, choir members introduced children to South African games, movement and dance, filling the room with jumping, clapping and laughter. At First-Plymouth Church, members of the ensemble worked with Abendmusik singers to learn a song together, bringing musicians from different backgrounds into the same space through a shared love of singing. One of the week’s most meaningful encounters took place at the Lancaster County Youth Services Center. The visit created a powerful connection between the young people and choir members. Youth Services Center staff shared the effects of these residencies can continue for days with participants becoming more positive and hopeful after the artists leave. The residency also reached the next generation of Nebraska musicians. Approximately 250 University of Nebraska–Lincoln music students gathered for a special convocation with the choir. Some learned a song directly from the artists and, that evening, joined Soweto Gospel Choir on the Lied Center stage to perform the finale together. Sharing South African heritage was central to the artists’ approach. Soweto Gospel Choir singer and choir administrator Bongani Ncube explained, “Singing is the same all over, but other people do it differently and they use their heritage.” He also hoped the experience would inspire young musicians to see where their own love of singing might take them. For Lied Center audiences and supporters, this is the impact artist outreach can create. A world-class performance may fill the Lied Center for one evening, but a residency carries that experience into community organizations, classrooms and the lives of young people who may never otherwise have this kind of access. Through these encounters, visiting artists become more than performers. They become teachers, collaborators and sources of inspiration, and the impact of their time in Nebraska can continue long after the final applause.
