A MESSAGE from the DEAN

Dear Friends,

I’d like to take a moment to reflect on gratitude.

Diniz, Korkes, Tristão, Pelegrini, Bellodi, & Baernardo (2023) found in their metaanalytic study of 64 other studies about gratitude that it led to “better mental health, and fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression” (p. 1). Philippians 4:6-7 says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (ESV, 2001/2016). 1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus.”

Psalm 107:1 says, “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good.” It should be noted that the book of Psalms was written around 1,410 years before Christ (B.C.), over 3,400 years before that meta-analysis article.

In a society where what is deemed ‘true’ seems to change day by day, I am grateful that one of the axioms of our university is that “all truth is God’s truth,” a quote often ascribed to St. Augustine. This perspective undergirds all our study and provides the motivation for discovering even more of God’s truth — a truth that never changes.

As you pursue His truth, I hope you will be inspired and motivated to enjoy learning, knowing that it is actually a discovery of everything He has made. You are not studying random details. You are studying the coherence, order, and creativity of God in this fallen world. So even though all this study may put some gray hair on your head as it has mine, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9, ESV, 2001/2016).

DR. JENDIA GRISSETT, LICSW, LSSBB

Dr. Jendia Grissett, LICSW, LSSBB, adjunct faculty member in the Department of Social Work, and a distinguished federal government executive, has graduated from the prestigious Executive Leadership Development Program (ELDP) through the U.S. Department of Defense.

The ELDP is a highly competitive, 10-month leadership immersion program designed to cultivate rising leaders in the Department

of Defense. Each year, a select cohort of approximately 64 participants from across the nation engage in experiential learning, strategic leadership development, and direct interaction with senior military personnel and service members.

Dr. Grissett’s selection and successful completion of the program reflect her exceptional leadership capacity and commitment to public service. Balancing her federal responsibilities with her role as an educator, she continues to teach in the Department of Social Work after fulfilling her government obligations, bringing real-world executive insight into the classroom.

Her achievement represents an important step in her career and reflects the increasing appreciation for the valuable leadership contributions that clinical and academic professionals bring to federal systems. Dr. Grissett’s background in systems thinking, emotional intelligence, and organizational development supports her ongoing efforts to make a positive impact in both government and higher education.

GIVING BACK

In October 2025, Dr. Chris Wheelus, Dr. Angela Wheelus, Dr. Shannon Shiderly, and Dr. Ken Smylie traveled at their own expense to Chisinau, Moldova, to teach at Divitia Gratiae University. A one-week graduatelevel class on counseling technique was taught, with the assistance of a Russian translator.

Dr. Natalie Atwell trained 100+ pastors in the Philippines on key aspects of biblical counseling.

Dr. Tiffany Lamas and Professor Hannah Heath were honored to accompany Dr. Kenneth Christopher and members from the School

of Behavioral Sciences, School of Nursing, School of Communication & the Arts, and School of Health Sciences on a mission trip to Curaçao. While health education, screening, and public health awareness were a primary focus, valuable skill development for community resource navigation, self-care practices, stress management, and advocacy were provided. Students and community members gained insight into the importance of collaborative interdisciplinary services and saw the love of Christ demonstrated through service to others.
